DEAR FRIENDS: LETTER FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL N. BLAIR FISHER

Thinking Strategically I love the game of chess and have played it most of my life. I am not a particularly strong player, and would probably be thrashed by any of the players on our chess team! I am a student of the game, however, and greatly enjoy studying the great games of the masters. Botvinnik v. Capablanca, Fischer v. Spassky, Kasparov v. Karpov – to chess aficionados, these matches are towering studies in strategy and tactics. Chess is one of the few games where luck does not play a role. To win, you must outthink your opponent. If you lose, you can’t blame bad cards or an unlucky roll of the dice. Part of the beauty of the game is that, in order to be successful, you must “see” the board and the pieces – what areas are open, what areas are blocked, where one must defend and where one can advance. There are so many styles of play that you can’t know them all – you have to become comfortable with certain styles and patterns and enter each game with a plan. However, you also have to be adaptable and tactical, because your opponent gets a say in how the game unfolds as well! You must have a goal, plan, and adapt as conditions on the board demand and as the game evolves. Life is like that in many ways. We set goals and create plans to achieve them, but life isn’t static. It hits us in ways that we didn’t expect or couldn’t foresee, and we have to respond and adapt effectively to be successful. COVID sure taught us that! Successful organizations do the same thing. They set for themselves a mission – a reason for being – and broad goals on how best to advance that mission. At St. Paul’s, our mission is simple: We exist to provide the highest quality college preparatory education in a Christian environment.

4

The Epistle II Magazine

Our mission is our North Star, and guides our every decision. If we centered on our mission, we will continue to “win.” In order to accomplish this, we must translate our mission into a game plan – the concrete action steps that we take as an organization. It’s the faculty we employ. It’s the curriculum we offer, and the extracurriculars, and the books and technology and dress code and student experiences and…. You get the picture! It is a highly complex interplay – far more complex than any chess game could ever be. Because for St. Paul’s, there is no end to the “game.” The game goes on and on through the years, and our conditions and environment evolve. Thus, we must be flexible and adaptable to those changes while remaining true to our mission. This is why strategic planning is so important: It provides us with an updated game plan based on our endlessly evolving environment. If we create a strong game plan and then execute that game plan effectively, our students will continue to win. Knowing What Matters: The 2021-2026 Strategic Plan is our game plan for

the next five years, and we are confident that it is a great one. It’s a team game, and each of us – teachers, parents, students, alumni, and friends – are key players. I’m glad that you’re on our team, and that it’s always our move! To study up on our game plan, please open the playbook: www.stpaulsmobile.net/strategicplan

What one word would you use to describe St. Paul’s?

Family Any words of wisdom as a St. Paul’s senior?

To try out and sign up for as many activities as you can. Clubs and groups are the best way to grow close with friends, discover new passions, and pursue current hobbies. St. Paul’s has so many different opportunities for students, and sometimes it takes stepping out of your comfort zone to find something you really enjoy. What is the best advice you have ever received?

“If you want to do something, you actually have to do it.” – Mrs. Inge So simple, yet so on the nose. If you want to make a difference in the world around you or achieve ambitious goals, there is no better place to start than with yourself. What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?

I love to cook. It helps me relieve stress, as well as channel my creativity. I also enjoy watching my favorite TV show, The Office. What do you plan to study in college?

Either business or psychology, but I definitely want to minor in Spanish. Do you feel any one person, family or teacher, has been your inspiration for education?

Dr. Fagbongbe. From the first day I walked into her class as a new student in the 8th grade, she has continually motivated me in my academic journey and inspired me to be the best student that I can be. She always holds her students to a higher standard out of a desire to see them succeed, and she has undoubtedly helped shape me into the person I am today. If you are leaving Mobile for college, what will you miss the most about our city?

The familiarity. Having never lived anywhere except Mobile, it’s going to take some time to get used to not having certain things close by, such as the gulf, fresh seafood, or Old Dutch ice cream. What has been your proudest moment to date? 6

Any words of wisdom as a St. Paul’s senior?

Make sure you enjoy your time while you still have it here. The moments that are the most unpleasant usually end up being the most memorable. So take a step back, smile, crack a joke, and remember to have fun.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

Don’t sweat the little things.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?

Spend time with friends. What do you plan to study in college?

Engineering

Do you feel any one person, family or teacher, has been your inspiration for education?

My parents are “da GOATs” (Greatest Of All Time) for dealing with me all these years. I don’t think I would be able to endure all of my stupid questions, but somehow, they have always tried to answer, or encourage me to find an answer for myself.

If you are leaving Mobile for college, what will you miss the most about our city?

The people, the culture, the environment. What has been your proudest moment to date?

Watching my classmates, many of whom I have known for almost our whole lives, grow into the great people they are today.

Honoring All Who Served St. Paul’s Episcopal School takes pride in honoring our Veterans and active duty military members who have sacrificed for our freedom. The school held its annual Veterans Day assembly on Friday, November 11th in the E.E. Delaney Memorial Stadium. Students and faculty members greeted crowds of parents, grandparents, veterans and active duty military members. The Veterans Day program began with a welcome from SGA President, Joseph Sharpe and prayer led by Senior Class Chaplain, Jacob Jernigan. The colors were presented by the St. Paul’s Boy Scout Troop 147, and the Chamber Choir exuberantly sang the National Anthem. A Veterans Day reflection was read by Senior Class President, Owen Beaverstock. An essay and poem were read by grade level winners Warner Sheppard (2nd Grade), Lanier Wood (6th Grade), and Matt Browning (11th Grade), followed by the 2nd grade’s sign language presentation of “You’re A Grand Old Flag.” St. Paul’s alumnus Lott Lewis ’04 was the guest speaker. Lewis graduated from St. Paul’s in 2004 as:

Christmas In the Square St. Paul’s Episcopal School kicked off the holiday season with the 3rd Annual “Christmas in the Square” on the evening of December 1, 2021. Over 700 cars participated in our Christmas drive-thru and the evening featured our very own St. Paul’s radio station where our guests could tune in to listen to our Lower School students singing, Chamber Singers, Chamber Strings, and Wind Ensemble playing Christmas carols. The drive-thru event also featured a 15 foot Christmas tree, Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, Buddy the Elf, The Elf on the Shelf (but in a tree), numerous holiday characters and blow-ups, over 40,000 Christmas lights, and a live nativity performed by the St. Paul’s Players. This event attracted many attendees from our Mobile community, and we believe this will be a wonderful tradition at St. Paul’s for years to come! 14

Susan Newby ‘84 Faculty & Alumna Spotlight

22

The Epistle II Magazine

At the end of the 2021-2022 school year, Susan Newby is stepping down from her role as Head of Intermediate School. With Susan’s long history as a member of the Community of Saints, she was a natural choice for the Epistle Spotlight! Tell us about Susan Newby – your family, interests, and so on. I have a wonderful husband (Mark) and three terrific daughters (Belle ’11, Jane ’15, Sarah ’17), who are all St. Paul’s alumnae! They are all working and successful. I enjoy cooking and running, and I love to read. I look forward to having more time to enjoy a good book. I also enjoy spending time with my family – we all still travel together. AND I look forward to more time on the river! How long have you been at St. Paul’s? Not counting my student years (I am a St. Paul’s alumna myself), I have worked at St. Paul’s for 26 years – all at the Intermediate School level. They are my peeps! I began as an AIP teacher and then worked as a reading specialist before becoming the Head of Intermediate School 15 years ago. How did you become a division head? It’s a long and complicated story. Essentially, I was asked to be the assistant head of lower school when it was reorganized into a PreK-4 model. With Anne Davis being on the church campus with PreK-2, I was the administrator for 3-4 on the main campus. It stayed that way even when it changed to Scott McDonald being the Director of Grades 3-8. When Dr. McDonald became Assistant Head of School, we created the Intermediate School as a separate division, and I became its head. I was excited about the chance to serve in this role, and I have loved it ever since.

What will you miss the most? The least? I will miss the people SO much. I love the people I work with – they make me happy every day and laugh constantly. They are the absolute best. I won’t miss some of the hard conversations and the mornings where it seems the alarm clock goes off too early, but I will also miss seeing “my” kids every day. What are your fondest memories of St. Paul’s? Wow, that’s a hard question, because so many memories come back to me. It’s like a collage from my student years, my teaching years, and my leading years. But they all come down to relationships. I suppose I will most miss seeing my students grow and turn into the awesome young men and women that they always seem to become. When you are asked, how do you describe St. Paul’s to others? A place where people can be themselves and grow into the best version of themselves possible. It’s a wonderful place to find one’s purpose and one’s gifts. St. Paul’s is truly a beautiful place for those who allow themselves to open up to its possibilities and give themselves to it. What’s next for you? I am open to opportunities and look forward to seeing what the next chapter of my life will hold. I do look forward to having a more flexible life and to spending more time with my mom and my family. I will always be part of the St. Paul’s family, though, and hope to be back on campus a lot!
