“Teaching and coaching young people has many rewards in the present and in the future. Regularly renewing friendships with successful EHS graduates ranks right up there with seeing the light go on in the classroom or a students’ success in an extracurricular activity,” says Bobby Watts, a veteran member of the faculty. Bobby graduated from Virginia Episcopal School and Virginia Military Institute. After serving in Vietnam, he spent four years at VES as a history teacher, coach, and director of admissions. He then had a career in business for 12 years, but he never strayed from education, as he continued to serve VES as a volunteer and trustee. At EHS, Bobby teaches social studies and coaches varsity track. He lives on campus with his wife, Elizabeth. They have two children, Rob ’98 and Betsy ’00.

Rick leads the effort to strengthen the School’s relationships with key constituency groups in order to increase engagement, volunteerism, and philanthropic support. During his tenure at Episcopal, Rick has served as a soccer coach, dorm parent, and advisor. As an advancement officer, he enjoys hearing testimonials about how impactful the EHS experience has been for alumni. Since becoming the head coach of boys’ soccer in 2000, Rick has coached numerous players who have gone on to have successful careers in college soccer, including two players who were recognized as The Washington Post’s All-Met Player of the Year. Rick has coached Episcopal to three league championships and state titles in 2008, 2009, and 2011. Rick is a graduate of Westminster School in Connecticut and holds a B.A. in English from RandolphMacon College, where he was a resident assistant, captain of the varsity soccer team, and an all-conference selection. Rick is the director of goalkeeping for the Alexandria Soccer Association and continues to enjoy playing soccer as well as golf. He and his wife, Emily Straight, live on campus with their daughter, Lilly, and son, Eli.
