F. Robertson Hershey 1998 HEADMASTER, SOCIAL STUDIES M.ED. UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA B.A. WILLIAMS COLLEGE

As Episcopal’s 11th Headmaster, Rob Hershey brings vision, energy, strong leadership, and outstanding experience to EHS. He began his independent school career in 1970 as a history and economics teacher and varsity basketball coach at Woodberry Forest School, where he also served as director of student life, director of admissions, assistant headmaster, and associate headmaster. In 1978, Rob was appointed headmaster of Durham Academy in Durham, N.C. In 1988, he accepted the headmaster/president position at Collegiate School in Richmond, Va., and in 1998, he came to Episcopal.

Rob presently serves as immediate past chair of the board of The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS). He formerly served as chair of the board for the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) and as chair of the North Carolina Association of Independent Schools. He was also on the board of the Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington (AISGW), the Secondary School Admission Test Board (SSATB), and the Virginia Secondary Commission of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He lives on campus with his wife, Kathleen, and they have three grown children, Will, Kate, and Christopher, and four grandchildren.

Dear Friends, This publication offers insight into what makes Episcopal High School the school that it is – our outstanding faculty. The faculty are the creative and enduring force in the life of any school.

Inside you will be introduced to the exceptional backgrounds, wide-ranging interests, and fascinating career paths of every faculty member. I take great pride in calling this talented and dedicated group of professionals my colleagues.

Perhaps nowhere is the influence of a faculty felt more strongly than in a boarding school. EHS faculty members make the campus and our programs come to life. They offer a vast reservoir of personal energy, intellectual curiosity, and spiritual strength – qualities that they share readily with our students.

Here, school doesn’t end with the last class of the day. Episcopal faculty members are also advisors, coaches, dorm parents, mentors, and friends. They are deeply involved in each student’s personal development in every aspect of life.

Ellen E. Albers 2005 ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF COLLEGE COUNSELING M.S.ED. UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA B.A. VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY

Ellen joined the Episcopal faculty after earning her graduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in psychological services and counseling. In her role as the associate director of college counseling, she helps students explore their strengths and interests, prepares them for and guides them through the college research and application process, and ultimately works to help students gain admission to the colleges and universities that best suit their ambitions and aspirations.

Ellen lives on campus with her husband, Ken; their two sons, Timmy and Auggie; and their daughter, Ingrid. In addition to her college counseling responsibilities, Ellen serves as a faculty advisor to the Honor Committee, is a member of the Student Assistance Team, and is part of the Evans Dorm team.

C. Bodhi Amos 2009 DIRECTOR OF CURRICULUM TECHNOLOGY FRENCH M.A. NEW YORK UNIVERSITY B.A. WILLIAMS COLLEGE

Bodhi has been teaching for more than 17 years, covering a wide variety of subjects that include English, French, mathematics, and technology. Most recently he taught French at his alma mater, Groton School, where he also coached football and lacrosse and served as a dormitory head.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Williams College, where he played varsity football and lacrosse and received the Williams College Purple Key Award for Outstanding Male Athlete. In the mid-1990s, Bodhi was a player and coach for Les Météores, a professional American football team in France. He studied at La Sorbonne in Paris before earning his master’s degree in French language and civilization from New York University.

At Episcopal, Bodhi teaches French, coaches varsity football and JV lacrosse, is the director of curriculum technology, and also is a member of the McGuire Dorm team. Bodhi lives on campus with his wife, Cecile; their two children, Ben and Alison ’15; and their cat, Pooba.

Thomas D. Anderson 2006 CHAIR OF MATHEMATICS M.S. LEHIGH UNIVERSITY B.S. COLLEGE OF WILLIAM AND MARY

Thomas came to Episcopal High School after serving on the faculty of The Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., for six years. He taught geometry, algebra, and precalculus, as well as AP statistics and calculus. He was head of a dormitory and advisor to the junior class, and he also served on the Residential Council, Discipline Committee, and Technology Committee.

After serving for two years as director of curriculum technology, in 2010 Thomas assumed the role of chair of the Mathematics Department. In addition to teaching, he coaches girls’ JV soccer and serves on the Hummel Dorm team.

Thomas is on sabbatical for the 2013-14 school year, studying for his M.A. in school leadership at Columbia University’s Teachers College.

Donald R. Babington 2013 SOCIAL STUDIES M.A.T. JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY B.A. JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

A recent graduate of James Madison University, Roane is in his first year at Episcopal. He has come to us to teach history, coach, and help with dorm and study hall supervision. Strong family ties and an ambition to help the next generation to achieve their potential has led Roane to Episcopal.

At EHS, Roane teaches 9th and 11th grade history.

He also coaches varsity football, wrestling, and baseball and is on the Hoxton Dorm team. He recently earned his master’s in education from James Madison University and lives in Alexandria.

Brendan J. Baran 2011 SOCIAL STUDIES M.A. COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY A.B. BROWN UNIVERSITY

Brendan earned his bachelor’s degree from Brown University in 2003. While at Brown, he studied classical history, Latin, and modern European history. He also competed as a coxswain on the freshman crew team. Upon graduating, he taught history and Latin, and coached girls’ crew at the Episcopal School of Jacksonville, Fla. He also has extensive boarding school experience, having attended Phillips Exeter Academy, and he taught at the Taft School where he also served as the director of rowing. In 2007, he earned his master’s degree in private school leadership from the Klingenstein Center at Columbia University. He has also studied at the Intercollegiate Center of Classical Studies in Rome and the American School of Classical Studies in Athens.

At EHS, Brendan is also the assistant coach for girls’ crew and track. Brendan was born and raised in Alexandria, Va., and now lives on McGuire Dorm with his dog, Abbott.

Thomas V. Berry, Jr. 2001 MATHEMATICS M.ED. LOYOLA COLLEGE M.A. UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA B.S. WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY

A valedictorian at Virginia Episcopal School, Tom taught at both the Fay School and Boston University Academy in Massachusetts and the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Maryland before coming to Episcopal. He has taught all levels of secondary math, from algebra to AP calculus. In addition to his teaching responsibilities at EHS, he coaches boys’ JV soccer and serves as a member of the Berkeley Dorm team.

In describing the faculty at EHS, Tom observes, “We each have our specific subjects, but everyone’s main goal is to help teenagers become interesting, honorable, and productive adults.” A member of the Mathematics Department, Tom shared, “While I hope that each one of my students will find the same joy I do in the beauty of mathematics, it is critical that all of my students find something about which to be passionate because that passion will carry them to success.”

Tom lives on campus with his wife, Deb; their daughter, Layne ’16; and son, Mark.

Sonia Bertrand 2008 FRENCH M.B. INSTITUT SUPÉRIEUR DU COMMERCE BACCALAURÉAT, MAISON D’EDUCATION DE LA LEGION D’HONNEUR

Born in Paris, Sonia grew up in Montmartre, France.

She was educated at the Maison d’Education de la Legion D’Honneur, and she received her master’s degree in business from Institut Supérieur du Commerce in Paris. In 1998, she moved to the United States and became a substitute French teacher at both EHS and Burgundy Farm Country Day School.

She lives in Old Town Alexandria with her husband, Nils; their daughter, Noomi; and their cat, Blue.

Karver S. Bolton 2012 ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF COUNSELING HEALTH AND WELLNESS M.A. WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY B.A. UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

Karver began his career counseling adolescents at a residential outdoor therapeutic school. Prior to joining the faculty at Episcopal, he was a counselor for teenagers and their families in the Charlottesville area. Additionally, Karver spent four years working in student life at the university level, directing and advising service and leadership programs at the University of Virginia’s student volunteer center and Wake Forest’s office of the president.

As a counselor at Episcopal, Karver meets with individual students, assists with Health Center programs and activities, and teaches 10th grade Health and Wellness. Karver’s counseling approach integrates emotional, cognitive, and behavioral experiences and development to support students and promote change. He is a member of the Hummel Dorm team and an advisor for Maroon Mentors. Karver and his wife, Sarah Catherine, live in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria.

Adrianna M. Bravo, M.D. 2010 MEDICAL DIRECTOR M.D. DARTMOUTH MEDICAL SCHOOL A.B. DARTMOUTH COLLEGE

Adrianna graduated cum laude from Dartmouth College with a bachelor’s degree in biology and studio arts. She earned her medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School, where she received the John and Sophia Zaslow Award, presented to a graduating senior who best exemplifies the spirit of care and compassion in medicine as voted on by clinical faculty. She completed her residency in pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. She comes to Episcopal after almost seven years as the medical director and director of health services at Salisbury School in Connecticut, where she also was an attending physician in the department of pediatrics at nearby Sharon Hospital. Before joining Salisbury’s faculty, Adrianna had her own medical practice and served as a clinical assistant in the Department of Pediatrics at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

Adrianna serves as Episcopal’s medical director, helping maintain the health and well-being of every student. She lives on campus with her husband, Matt Fitzgerald, and their three daughters, EllaMae, Tallulah, and Tennyson.

Marc A. Carter 2013 CHAIR OF COMPUTER STUDIES DIRECTOR OF TECHNOLOGY M.S.I.S. UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY, SUNY M.S. UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY, SUNY B.A. WAGNER COLLEGE

As a graduate of the University at Albany with two graduate degrees in the fields of educational technology and information science management, Marc is well suited to lead Episcopal in the 21st century. At Episcopal, he oversees technology and its integration school wide. Marc comes to us from the Louisville Collegiate School, where he served as the director of educational technology. Prior to his tenure at Collegiate, Marc also held positions at Lycos, Inc., MTV Networks, Department of Education, and University at Albany. He possesses a passion for technology but moreover enjoys helping others to learn how to integrate technology into their daily lives.

In addition to overseeing Episcopal’s technology effort, Marc serves as an advisor, is a member of the evening study hall team, and lives on campus with his wife, Laurén; their daughters, Adrienne and Madison; and their dog, Mia.

Mark T. Carter 2010 INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC M.A. AND M.M. UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA B.M. JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

Mark has had a varied career in music and the performing arts, as both a teacher and a performer.

He studied music education at James Madison University, where he was drum major for the Marching Royal Dukes and a member of the pep band. He also performed with and served as drum major for the Magic of Orlando Drum and Bugle Corps.

After graduation, he served as music director for an off-Broadway production of “Grease” and as a special events coordinator for the Walt Disney Company. Mark began his teaching career in 2000 and most recently served as the director of bands at Annandale High School in Virginia, conducting and instructing students in the marching, concert, and jazz bands, as well as teaching guitar and conducting the pit orchestra for school musicals. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of South Florida with dual master’s degrees in music education and instrumental conducting in 2007.

At EHS, Mark conducts the jazz band and orchestra and teaches AP Music Theory and recording. He also serves as a faculty advisor and member of the McGuire Dorm team.

Anne T. Carver 2005 LEARNING SPECIALIST M.H.S. JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY M.A. UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA B.A. UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

Anne earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from the University of Virginia. She also received a master’s degree in health science from Johns Hopkins University. She has a wide range of experience in education, having taught at the primary, secondary, and adult levels. Before coming to Episcopal, Anne taught in the Alexandria city school system and an adult literacy program. She has worked at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and for consulting firms as a freelance writer and editor.

As a Peace Corps volunteer, Anne taught English as a second language to high school students in Morocco.

In addition to helping students with study and organizational skills, she runs the peer tutoring program.

She has also taught freshman English. Anne is on the Anderson Dorm team and lives in Alexandria with her husband, Justin Ward. They have three children, Mary Cary, Charles, and Katie.

Kathleen S. Caslow 1992 SCIENCE M.S. GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY B.S. DICKINSON COLLEGE

Kathleen joined the Episcopal faculty in 1992 after working for George Washington University and the National Institutes of Health, where she conducted AIDS and cancer research. At Episcopal, she teaches biology, anatomy and physiology, and genetics and coaches girls’ varsity tennis and winter track.

Kathleen is part of the Dalrymple Dorm team. In describing her educational philosophy, Kathleen stated, “I am passionate about what I teach and coach. I want to engage young minds, captivate them, and make them love the subject. We are partners in the learning process, and I try to make science relevant to their lives so they see the value in what they are learning.”

She stays current in her field by participating in scientific societies and continuing her research. Kathleen was awarded the 2007 Frontier Fellowship from the American Physiological Society, a yearlong fellowship to enhance teaching by inquiry. The fellowship includes a summer research job at Georgetown University.

Kathleen and her husband, Doug, live on campus with their sons, Scott ’08, Quinn ’12, and Schillo Tshuma ’11.

Stephen R. Castle 1988 SCIENCE M.ED. UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA B.S. WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY

A graduate of Washington and Lee University with a degree in chemistry, Steve came to Episcopal to teach math and science, coach, and live on campus as a dorm supervisor. Years of working in summer camps led Steve to choose teaching at a residential school as his profession.

In addition to teaching science, Steve is the head wrestling coach and coaches cross country. Since 1999, Steve has served on the faculty of VAIS Teachers Development Institute, mentoring educators who are new to their profession. Steve serves on the Hummel Dorm team and lives on campus with his wife, Susan; their daughters, Sarah Gray ’17 and Kate; and their dog, Bromley.

James H. Chesson ’79 1986 SCIENCE M.A.T. NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY M.A.R. YALE DIVINITY SCHOOL B.A. WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY

A rewarding experience as a student led Jim to return to Episcopal as a physics teacher in 1986. In addition to his teaching duties, Jim is the chair of the Discipline Committee, coaches cross country and track, and supervises weekend activities. He also assists with the Science Olympiad Team. While on sabbatical in 1997, he attended New Mexico State University, where he earned a second master’s degree in physics education. He also has developed elective courses in astronomy and geology.

Jim enjoys a variety of outdoor activities, including running, hiking, and gardening. During the summer he loves to travel and teaches younger students in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth program. Jim has three children, Zach ’05, Grace ’08, and Joslyn ’13, and he lives off campus with his wife, Susan.

Anna H. Collins 2010 DIRECTOR OF MARCH LIBRARY M.L.S. THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AT BUFFALO B.A. NAZARETH COLLEGE

Anna believes that “collaborating with teachers to help students navigate our information-rich world and become adept at retrieving and evaluating information is an important step toward preparing students for 21st-century readiness.” Anna came to Episcopal High School after serving as a high school librarian in Rochester, N.Y., for seven years.

She began her EHS career as instruction librarian, and then in 2013, she assumed the role of director of March Library. In her role as director, she is focused on supporting both the academic and recreational interests of the community. Anna lives on Berkeley Dorm with her husband, Dave; their son, Gabriel; and their dog, Frances.

David W. Collins 2008 MATHEMATICS M.S. OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY B.S. RUTGERS UNIVERSITY

An accomplished athlete and former Olympian, Dave brings a wealth of teaching and coaching experience to the Episcopal faculty. A seven-time national rowing champion, he won a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics as a member of the U.S. rowing team. Dave also received a gold medal at the 1995 Pan American Games and a bronze medal at the 1991 World Rowing Championships.

He graduated with honors from Rutgers University, and in 2006, he was inducted into the college’s Olympic Hall of Fame. Dave completed his graduate degree in secondary education at Old Dominion University’s Darden College of Education.

In addition to teaching mathematics in public high schools, Dave has worked for the North Carolina Department of Education evaluating and authoring future state assessments. He also wrote a research paper to aid new teachers with peer relations within a multicultural classroom as part of a U.S. Department of Education study. He has coached both high school and college crew, including the Rutgers and Georgetown University teams.

At Episcopal, Dave teaches math and coaches girls’ crew. He lives on Berkeley Dormitory with his wife, Anna; their son, Gabriel; and their dog, Frances.

Scott R. Conklin 2006 DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS M.A. TOWSON UNIVERSITY A.B. PRINCETON UNIVERSITY

Scott graduated from Princeton University in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and he earned his master’s degree in school psychology from Towson University in 2003. He was a two-time All-American lacrosse player at Princeton and a member of the university’s 1992 and 1994 national championship teams.

Prior to coming to Episcopal, Scott spent 11 years at St. Paul’s School in Baltimore. At Episcopal, Scott has led the varsity lacrosse team to three straight appearances in The Washington Post Top 10, in addition to a Virginia Independent School State Championship in 2011. He was also named the Virginia State Coach of the Year in 2011.

Scott serves as director of admissons, is a member of the Hoxton Dorm team, and is head coach of the boys’ varsity lacrosse team. He lives on Hoxton Dorm with his wife, Michele, and their three children, Tyler, Logan, and Cameron.

Viviana R. Davila 1994 SPANISH M.A. GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY B.A. MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE

Before arriving at EHS, Viviana was the classroom assistant and assistant instructor for professor and syndicated columnist Colman McCarthy at the University of Maryland. She also worked for Esperanza, Inc., in Ohio, where she created a computer-training curriculum for secondary school and college students.

Viviana attended Middlebury College, where she played lacrosse and field hockey. In 2001-02, she received Episcopal High School’s Olsson Sabbatical and completed a master’s degree in Spanish literature. Viviana plans to pursue a doctorate in linguistics or English as a second language (ESL).

Viviana has been teaching Advanced, honors, and regular Spanish at Episcopal since 1994 and received the 2007 Alexandria Education Partnership Excellence in Education award. Currently, Viviana coaches the girls’ varsity field hockey and winter track teams and volunteers for the City of Alexandria lacrosse teams.

She is a member of the Evans Dorm team and lives on campus with her husband, Derrick; their daughters, Nina ’15, Elisa, and Alani; and their Jack Russell terrier, Toby.

William H. deButts III ’76 2005 CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER M.B.A. UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA A.B. PRINCETON UNIVERSITY

A 1976 graduate of EHS, Boota returned to Episcopal as the chief financial officer after working in the for-profit sector for more than 20 years. His work experience took the deButts family across the country and around the world; his children were born in San Francisco, Charlottesville, and Paris. Boota also served on Episcopal’s Board of Trustees for five years and was inducted into the EHS Athletics Hall of Fame.

Boota is a member of the Administrative Duty team and serves as a student advisor. He and his wife, Shelley, live on campus and have three children, Lindsey ’08, Hunter ’10, and Austin ’12.

Richard S. Dixon, Jr. 1993 CHAIR OF MODERN AND CLASSICAL LANGUAGES SOCIAL STUDIES PH.D. UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL M.A. UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA B.A. BOSTON UNIVERSITY

Rick’s decision to come to Episcopal was influenced, he says, by the strong reputation of the School and its highly successful approach to teaching languages. He re-established the German program at Episcopal after its seven-year hiatus.

In 2001, Rick spent three months at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and was affiliated with their German Department as a school teacher fellow. During the summer of 2005, Rick taught for the Emory University Summer Abroad Program in Vienna, Austria, and he was the lead teacher for the Commonwealth of Virginia Governor’s German Academy in Richmond in the summer of 2006. Each summer since 2008, Rick has participated in three international teacher seminars at the Goethe Institute in Berlin.

Since the summer of 2007, Rick has pitched and played right field in the Halifax County (Va.) Old Timer’s Baseball League. He was selected as “Rookie of the Year” in that league in 2007. He and his wife, Elsabe, have two sons, Cobb ’04 and Tommy ’16, and a daughter, Ina ’06. Rick lives on campus with his family.

David A. Douglas 1994 VISUAL ARTS M.F.A. JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY B.F.A. VIRGINIA INTERMONT COLLEGE

A working artist who has lived in the Washington, D.C., area all his life, David brings painting and photography expertise, creativity, and a wealth of teaching experience to Episcopal. He has been an interior design consultant, a decorative painter, and an instructor in Alexandria public schools. He has had dozens of acclaimed exhibitions of his paintings over the last 25 years. David’s work is held in many public, private, and corporate collections throughout the country, including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Chrysler Museum of Art, the Marriott Corporation, and The Washington Post. He is currently represented by the Lindstrum Matre Gallery in Atlanta and Gallery One in Nashville, Tenn.

He continues to expand his Africa Works project, a body of work inspired by his relationship with Gift Maworere ’06, who lived with David and his family while at EHS. The collection features the people and landscapes of Africa, captured during David’s travels in Zimbabwe, as well as the relationship between Gift and the Douglas family.

At EHS, David leads the afternoon art option, serves on the Berkeley Dorm team, and is the co-chair of the Student Assistance Team. He lives on campus with his wife, Ann; their son Max; and their dog, Singer.

They also have a daughter, Scout ’06.

Anita B. Doyle 1995 DIRECTOR OF ACADEMIC SUPPORT M.A. NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY B.A. UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER

As one of Episcopal’s learning specialists, Anita considers herself to be a coach of sorts, helping young people to become better students. Using diagnostic teaching, she is able to assist with academic work while discovering each student’s strengths and weaknesses. She helps students understand their unique learning profiles and encourages them to persevere, work hard, and advocate for their own needs. Anita works with students to develop more effective study techniques, prioritize their responsibilities, and manage their time. In addition to her daytime responsibilities, she is a member of the evening study hall team.

Before coming to Episcopal, Anita was the director of diagnostic services for the Developmental School Foundation and the education director for the Foundation Intermediate School. Anita lives in Alexandria with her husband, Peter.

Nathaniel T. Duffield 2008 VISUAL ARTS B.F.A. NEW YORK STATE COLLEGE OF CERAMICS AT ALFRED UNIVERSITY

Nat graduated cum laude from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, with a minor in art history.

He spent many years as a production potter in Seattle, Wash. He was resident artist at the Pottery Northwest studio in Seattle, where he also taught wheel throwing. More recently, he was a resident artist at the Art League School in Alexandria and taught pottery and figure sculpture.

At Episcopal, Nat teaches ceramics and is the agricultural technician for the Baker Science Center, where he helps take care of the greenhouse. He is an avid gardener and is the head of the EHS Environmental Club. Each year he helps the students grow hot peppers in the School’s organic garden for the hot sauce that is sold as a fundraiser at The Game. Every semester Mr. Duffield and his wife, art teacher Liz Vorlicek, host a tea party for their ceramics students in their home, giving students a chance to use the kinds of handmade pottery they aspire to create. “I think it’s important for students to be able to produce a tangible object,” says Mr. Duffield, “whether that means growing a plant in the green house or throwing a pot in the ceramics studio.” Nat and his wife live on campus.

Nathaniel A. Ebel 2009 ENGLISH M.A. UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA B.A. BAYLOR UNIVERSITY

Nate came to Episcopal from Woodberry Forest School, where he spent six years as an English teacher, administrator, and coach.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Baylor University, from which he graduated magna cum laude, and his master’s degree in English language and literature from the University of Virginia.

At Episcopal, Nate teaches English, coaches the boys’ varsity football and JV basketball teams, and serves as the sophomore class dean. He is head of Hoxton Dorm, where he lives with his wife, Courtenay, and their sons, Marshall and Duncan.

An avid reader and writer, Perry shares his love of literature and history with students at EHS and actively encourages their own creative writing in his English classes. A 1965 graduate of Episcopal, he taught at Woodberry Forest School for 13 years before returning to EHS. Perry previously served as chair of the English Department and is an advisor to The Chronicle, the student newspaper, and Daemon, the art and literary magazine. He also co-heads the Student Assistance Team, which helps students in need of special support.

Perry graded AP English examinations for 12 years.

His book of poems, “Nothing Happened,” was published by Word Works in 2010. He has read in the Joaquin Miller Cabin Poetry Series in Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C., and coordinates the annual Word Works Young Poets’ competition. Perry and his wife, Gail, live on campus.

Daphne is an alumna of EHS, graduating in 2002.

She held leadership positions as a Senior Monitor, member of the Honor Committee, and captain of the field hockey and crew teams. She was inducted into the Cum Laude Society. Daphne attended the University of Virginia, earning both a bachelor’s degree in art history and a master’s degree in teaching with a focus in special education. She has spent the past five years working as a special education teacher, first with Fairfax County Public Schools and most recently as a learning specialist with Georgetown Day School in Washington, D.C. At Episcopal, Daphne serves as an assistant director of admissions and 9th grade advisor. She is also a member of the Harrison Dorm team. She lives on Harrison with her husband, Eric; their son, Weston; and their two dachshunds, Huckleberry and Periwinkle.

Caroline B. Faris 2012 COLLEGE COUNSELOR M.ED. UNIVERSITY OF BUFFALO B.A. TULANE UNIVERSITY

Caroline has been a college counselor for several years and loves working with the students and their parents throughout the entire college application process. At Episcopal, Caroline works closely with students as they research and develop their list of colleges, draft their application essays, and decide their standardized test schedule. She also collaborates with the other college counselors to plan and present the annual calendar of college-related events. For EHS students, Caroline co-leads several college campus visits to schools in the wider surrounding area. Before coming to Episcopal, Caroline lived and worked in Singapore, where she was the college counselor at the International School Singapore (ISS).

Caroline lives in Washington, D.C., with her husband, Steve, and middle school-aged daughter Juliet. She has one son, Philip ’13, in college and a second son, Stephen ’16, is a student at EHS. Her father, Henry E. Blake ’57, is a graduate of The High School.

Mary earned her bachelor’s degree from Princeton University, where she specialized in Asian studies, European and American history, and religions.

She later earned a master’s degree in religion from Catholic University, where she was awarded the John Quasten Fellowship.

In 2010, Mary took on the role of Episcopal’s assistant head for academics. She has more than 20 years of educational experience, during which she has been a teacher, coach, dorm parent, community service program coordinator, outdoor education leader, department chair, and academic dean. Most recently she served as director of studies at Georgetown Day School in Washington, D.C. In addition to overseeing academic life at EHS, Mary teaches western philosopy and serves as a member of the Administrative Duty Team. She lives on campus with her husband, David, and their son, Sam.

She has also worked for the National Association of Broadcasters in Washington, D.C.; the New York Public Library; the Pratt Institute Library in Brooklyn, N.Y.; and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Sarah lives in Alexandria with her husband, David, and their children, Eliza and Davy.

Matt received his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College, where he concentrated in international relations and economics. He later earned a master’s degree in computing and education from Teacher’s College at Columbia University. Before joining the EHS faculty, Matt worked at independent schools in several capacities, including mathematics and computer science teacher; director of information services and educational technology; and coach of rowing, football, and ice hockey.

Matt is the JV golf coach at Episcopal. He is an avid rower and outdoorsman and lives on campus with his wife, Dr. Adrianna Bravo, and their three daughter, EllaMae, Tallulah, and Tennyson.

James J. Fitzpatrick 2005 DIRECTOR OF BOYS’ ATHLETICS B.A. WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY

Jim attended high school at Flint Hill in Oakton, Va., where he was an All-Met basketball player and All-Met honorable mention soccer player his senior year. In 2000, he graduated from Wake Forest University with a bachelor’s degree in sociology.

Jim played basketball in college and was co-captain of Wake Forest’s National Invitation Tournament championship team his senior year.

Prior to coming to Episcopal, Jim was head basketball coach, assistant dean of students, and alumni director at Flint Hill, and an assistant basketball coach at Elon University in North Carolina.

In addition to serving as the director of boys’ athletics, he is also an administrative duty officer and is head coach of the boys’ varsity basketball team. At EHS, Jim previously served as the associate director of admissions and director of summer programs. Jim lives on campus with his wife, Jen; their daughter, Caroline; and their dog, Bailey.

Jen enjoyed a distinguished athletic career at the University of Rochester, where she was captain of both the soccer and lacrosse teams. She was recognized as All-Conference in lacrosse, All-American in soccer, and received the university’s Merle Spurrier Award, which recognizes the senior woman who has made the most outstanding contribution to women’s sports by demonstrating leadership, enthusiasm, and service. After graduating cum laude in psychology and political science, Jen went on to earn her master’s degree in sports management from the University of Massachusetts.

Prior to coming to Episcopal, Jen served as assistant women’s soccer coach at the University of Rochester, assistant lacrosse and soccer coach at Amherst College, and head coach of both women’s soccer and lacrosse at Mount Holyoke College. In her role as director of girls’ athletics at EHS, she focuses on providing leadership for the girls’ athletic program. She also coaches girls’ JV soccer, serves on the Anderson Dorm team, and is an advisor to freshman girls. Jen lives on campus with her husband, Jim; their daughter, Caroline; and their dog, Bailey.

Rachael A. Flores 2007 CO-DEAN OF INSTITUTIONAL DIVERSITY SOCIAL STUDIES M.A. THE GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY A.B. PRINCETON UNIVERSITY

An alumna of Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, Pa., Rachael graduated cum laude in history from Princeton with minors in African-American and Latin American studies. She came to Episcopal after two successful years at Asheville School in North Carolina. There she taught world history and European history, and helped pilot a new humanities program in world studies. She also took on the role of dorm parent and was sponsor for a number of independent senior projects.

At Episcopal, Rachael teaches Global History, Advanced Art History, and other senior electives.

She serves as co-dean of institutional diversity and coordinator for the freshman course Themes in Global History 1. She is also a member of the Evans Dorm team, an upperclassmen advisor, and assists with the cross-training program for seniors.

Rachael received a master’s degree in history at George Washington University with a concentration in British imperial and colonial studies. She regularly volunteers with the youth programs in her church and enjoys reading, watching “Law and Order,” and spending time with her husband and young twins, Willie and Eva. 20

Madeline E. Gobrecht 2011 ASSISTANT LEARNING SPECIALIST HEALTH AND WELLNESS MATHEMATICS B.A. YALE UNIVERSITY

Mady earned her bachelor’s degree from Yale University, where she majored in psychology with a focus in special education and child psychology. She played on the Yale women’s basketball team during her four years, and received All-Ivy League honors, in addition to a National Invitation Tournament appearance as a senior. In 2010, Madeline began work at Riverview Children’s Hospital in Middletown, Conn., where she served as a teaching intern for the full academic year.

At Episcopal, Mady is a member of the School’s learning specialist team. She also teaches Health and Wellness to sophomores and has served as a part-time interviewer for the admissions office. Beyond academics, Mady is the head coach of the girls’ varsity basketball team and assistant coach of the softball team. Mady also helps to organize and direct Episcopal’s summer athletic program. She lives on Evans Dorm, where she serves as dorm head.

Catherine B. Gomez-Goodnow 1997 SPANISH M.A. MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE B.A. COLLEGE OF MOUNT ST. VINCENT

Catherine was born in Argentina and raised in Chile, as her family was stationed in various countries throughout Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe. A government major, Catherine worked for seven years for the U.S. House of Representatives as a legislative researcher for the Clerk of the House.

She left Capitol Hill to join her husband, Peter, in Lynchburg, Va., where he was a member of the faculty at Virginia Episcopal School. Catherine soon began her own teaching career at VES during an exciting time in the school’s history, when it introduced co-education and matriculated its first group of girls. In addition to her teaching duties, she was head of the first girls’ dormitory. Catherine realized that teaching Spanish language and culture was her true passion and has been working in boarding schools ever since.

In addition to teaching Spanish, Catherine is a member of the Harrison Dorm team. She also chaperones the EHS summer program in Spain. She lives on campus with her husband, Peter; their children, Lizzie and Ned; and their dogs, Molly and Leo.

Peter P. Goodnow 1997 DIRECTOR OF ACADEMIC TOURS, SOCIAL STUDIES M.A. GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY B.A. COLBY COLLEGE

As director of Episcopal’s Washington Program, Peter’s role is to help integrate the D.C. region’s physical and human resources into the academic day. He runs the Wednesday tour program that sends classes on various field trips and research projects throughout the region, and he oversees Episcopal’s Senior Seminar, a month-long internship program occurring every May. He explains, “Episcopal’s goal is to provide our students with unique opportunities – from studying freshwater ecology in local streams to discussing U.S. foreign policy at the State Department to actually working in the ‘real world’ – in ways that broaden their educational experience and empower them personally.”

Peter is a member of the Activities team and is the official timer/scorekeeper/announcer for the EHS basketball program. He enjoys reading, current events, and most outdoor activities, especially at his family’s beach house in Delaware. He lives on campus with his wife, Catherine; their children, Lizzie and Ned; and their two dogs.

Joseph A. Halm 1996 SCIENCE M.A. FURMAN UNIVERSITY B.S. LAFAYETTE COLLEGE

When he’s not teaching biology, freshwater ecology, or physics, Joe loves to spend time outdoors hiking or kayaking with his wife, Joey; their three children, Abby ’13, Ellie ’16, and Mac; and their dog, Lucy.

An avid backpacker, rock climber, mountaineer, and cross-country skier, he leads outdoor trips for EHS students in the winter and summer. Along with his love for the wilderness, Joe is a well-rounded musician and plays percussion and guitar in styles that range from classical to rock. He also enjoys biking, running, archery, surfing, and playing golf.

Joe joined the EHS faculty in 1996 after teaching at Montclair Kimberley Academy in New Jersey and Christ Church Episcopal School in South Carolina.

At EHS, he is the head coach of the varsity cross country team and coaches the middle distance and distance runners for the track team. He is also head of Berkeley Dorm and serves on the Student Assistance Team. He was selected as one of the Alexandria Education Partnership Excellence in Education Award winners in 2005, and in 2009 he served on a high school biology curriculum development team for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Joe believes that Episcopal is a very special place to work and live, “an especially nurturing, supportive, and caring community.” He and his family live on campus.

Before joining the EHS faculty in 1999, Bob served as director of admissions at the University of the South for 12 years. Prior to this, he served as dean of admissions at Washington University in St. Louis for three years and as assistant dean of admissions at the University of Virginia for nine years. Bob is actively involved with national and regional college admission organizations, including the National Association of College Admissions Counselors and the College Board, and he has served on the National Merit Scholarship Corporation Selection Committee.

Bob lives in Washington, D.C., and serves on the Congregational Steering Committee for the Washington National Cathedral.

Kristelle A. Hicks 2011 SPANISH B.A. BATES COLLEGE

Kristelle earned her B.A. from Bates College in English and Spanish. Having worked at Kent School as a dorm head, coach, Spanish teacher, and student activities coordinator, she joined the EHS faculty with several years of teaching and student life experience.

As part of the Episcopal community, Kristelle teaches Spanish and is a member of the Evans Dorm team. She is the assistant JV volleyball coach and assists with the community service program.

Mimi E. Hobart 2007 MATHEMATICS M.ED. UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA B.S. DAVIDSON COLLEGE

Mimi graduated from The Westminster Schools in Atlanta, where she was a member of the Cum Laude Society and the Honor Committee, as well as captain of the cross country team. She earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics, with a concentration in education, from Davidson College and received the William D. Vinson Mathematics Award, presented by the mathematics faculty to the best math student in the class. While at Davidson, Mimi served as a math tutor and was hired to research texts and develop curriculum to launch a new course that integrates mathematics into the solution of real-world problems.

Prior to joining the EHS faculty, she spent a summer as a teaching assistant at Andover in Massachusetts, teaching precalculus and trigonometry and serving as a faculty advisor and dorm counselor. She also studied at the Klingenstein Summer Institute, a program for early career teachers through Columbia University. In the spring of 2013, she earned her master’s in education from the University of Virginia.

At Episcopal, Mimi teaches math, coaches cross country and track, and serves on the Dalrymple Dorm team.

Vincent S. Hodge, Jr. ’89 1996 DIRECTOR OF FINANCIAL AID, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS M.A. PRINCETON UNIVERSITY B.A. STANFORD UNIVERSITY

In 1989, Vincent graduated from Episcopal as chair of the Honor Committee and a Senior Monitor. In 1996, he returned to EHS as a history teacher. He now serves as director of financial aid, assistant director of admissions, and international student advisor.

“Episcopal granted me unforeseen opportunities while I was a student,” he says. “I relish the chance to help shape the lives of young people and to give back to an institution that has granted me so much.”

When not working, Vincent and his wife, Marina, attend cultural events in Washington, D.C. They live on campus.

Jeffrey B. Hoisington 1990 DIRECTOR OF RESIDENTIAL LIFE, DIRECTOR OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES, MATHEMATICS M.ED. CLARK UNIVERSITY B.A. HOBART COLLEGE

One of the major reasons Jeff chose teaching as a profession over 25 years ago was his experience as a student at The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey.

At Episcopal, Jeff teaches geometry and also oversees the workings of all the dormitories as director of residential life and director of student activities.

Jeff can be found planning a party for 450 teenagers or, for a more quiet night, a coffeehouse event in Blackford. He enjoys his work at EHS because “the classes are small, and the students are motivated and want to succeed. There is a sense that we are all in this together. EHS is small enough that you actually do know each of the kids.”

In his free time, Jeff is a lacrosse referee, refinishes furniture, and spends time fishing and boating on the Pamlico Sound at his vacation home in Oriental, N.C. He has two sons, Tim ’05 and Zack ’06.

Alison M. Holby 2009 ENGLISH M.A. MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE B.A. DAVIDSON COLLEGE

Alison is a graduate of The Westminster Schools and Davidson College, from which she earned an honors degree in English. At Davidson, she won the Charles E. Lloyd nonfiction writing competi­tion and later wrote one of the first nonfiction honors theses for the college’s English Department.

Before coming to Episcopal, she taught English at Wesleyan School in Georgia. Alison also coached cross country and swimming, served as year­book advisor, and led students on mission and service trips to Peru, New Orleans, and El Salvador. In 2007, she traveled to England to study with L’Abri Fellowship International as recipient of the Georgia Independent School Association Loveday Grant for Summer Study and Research.

At EHS, Alison teaches English, coaches spring track, and serves on Evans Dorm where she resides.

After serving six years as Episcopal’s director of communications and three years as a major gifts officer, Christina was appointed director of institutional advancement in 2013. She is responsible for all development, communications, and alumni and parent programs. Christina is committed to the ideals and values of independent school education and to securing a strong future for Episcopal.

Prior to joining EHS, Christina worked in the public information arena as a consultant to government agencies and on Capitol Hill. An advocate of community engagement, she has served in numerous governance capacities, including three terms as president of the board of trustees of an independent day school. She came to the Washington, D.C., area in 1990 after serving in Ecuador as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer. Christina has recently completed her certificate in business administration from Georgetown University.

Christina and her husband, Chuck, live just a mile from campus with their daughters, Emma ’12, Sophie ’15, and Greta ’17.

Kristin M. Hosmer 2011 DIRECTOR OF COUNSELING HEALTH AND WELLNESS M.S.W. BOSTON COLLEGE B.S. GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY

Kristin Hosmer received her undergraduate degree in psychology from Georgetown University followed by a post-graduate volunteer year through the University of Notre Dame. After spending two years teaching U.S. history and psychology at the high school level, she went on to earn her master’s degree in social work from Boston College. She spent a year at the Stone Center at Wellesley College focusing on clinical training in relational theory, women’s development, and diversity and crosscultural issues.

Before joining the EHS community, Kristin spent nine years at Georgetown Visitation as a personal counselor and college counselor. She is a licensed clinical social worker with experience in private practice treating adolescents. Her approach to counseling involves a variety of interventions meant to empower, strengthen, and foster well-being. Kristin lives on campus, serves on the Student Assistance Team, and is a member of the Anderson Dorm team.

Thom teaches the students at Episcopal because of his “joy of introducing people to a world of ideas.”

He believes that when you discuss globalization, “it is not just a matter of knowing and visiting other places, but understanding the philosophic and religious perspectives that undergird those civilizations.” Thom has ample opportunity to encourage such interaction, as he is a teacher of theology, one of the chaplains, an advisor for the community service program, a member of the Hoxton Dorm team, and is active in the Senior Seminar program.

A member of the American Academy of Religion and the Conference of Anglican Theologians, Thom also teaches graduate classes at Virginia Theological Seminary. He has written one monograph on pilgrimage, contributed to seven books on the history of Jerusalem, and is a senior fellow of the Christian Heritage Research Institute in Jerusalem. He spends his summers in Jerusalem and Oxford, England. He and his wife, Ruth, live on campus in Liggett Hall.

Heidi R. Huntley 2006 CHAIR OF SOCIAL STUDIES M.ED. KEENE STATE COLLEGE B.A. UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

Before joining the EHS faculty, Heidi taught for six years at Souhegan High School in Amherst, N.H., where she became acquainted with the Coalition of Essential Schools’ philosophy. She is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where she pursued a degree in art history with a minor in architectural studies. She completed her secondary education certification through a post-baccalaureate program and earned her M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction from Keene State College.

Heidi completed three study programs at Yale University’s MacMillan Center, which provided her with the opportunity to travel to Turkey, China, and Ecuador, and more recently participated in two programs at Harvard University’s Davis Center. At Episcopal, Heidi serves as the Social Studies Department chair. She also teaches Themes in Global History II, Honors Global History II, History of the Modern Middle East, and an elective course she wrote, Advanced Global Energy. Heidi is also a 9th grade advisor and a member of the Anderson Dorm team. In her spare time she enjoys yoga, traveling, serving as a museum docent, gardening, and attending concerts and lectures in D.C.

Timothy C. Jaeger 1996 ASSISTANT HEAD FOR STUDENT LIFE, ENGLISH M.ED. COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY M.S. UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS B.A. MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE

Tim was appointed assistant head for student life in 2005. In this role, he provides oversight in areas such as residential life, athletics, the health center, chapel programs, community service, student leadership, the dean of students office, and the office of institutional diversity. These student life teams develop and implement programs that help students lead healthy and safe lives and successfully live and learn together in a communal environment. Tim also teaches English 4 and creative writing. He served as the School’s athletics director for six years and was the head coach for the boys’ varsity basketball team for 10 years.

Prior to joining the Episcopal faculty, Tim was the head coach for men’s basketball at Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina. He graduated cum laude from Middlebury College and has earned master’s degrees from the University of Massachusetts and Columbia University.

Tim is a member of the Administrative Duty Team and lives on campus with his wife, Tracy; their daughter, Lina; and their dog, Charlie.

Meghann O. Jones 2011 SPANISH, SOCIAL STUDIES B.A. UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

Meghann graduated from the University of Virginia, where she studied Latin American studies and Spanish and participated in a semester abroad in Valencia, Spain. Prior to coming to Episcopal, she was a substitute teacher at her high school alma mater, St. Anne’s Belfield, and tutored ESL students through Migrant Aid in Charlottesville, Va. She also spent time teaching English at a high school in the western highlands of Guatemala.

In addition to teaching Spanish 3 and Themes in Global History, Meghann is head coach of girls’ JV lacrosse and coaches JV girls’ basketball, serves as a faculty sponsor for the Service Council, advises freshman girls, and participates in various school trips including the summer Spain program and the service trip to the Dominican Republic.

Meghann lives on Anderson Dorm with her dog, Harley.

Douglas E. Kehlenbrink 2000 CHAIR OF THE ARTS, DIRECTOR OF CULTURAL ACTIVITIES M.M.ED. JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY B.S. BALL STATE UNIVERSITY

“It’s hard to imagine a more perfect environment for teaching, learning, and living the arts than Episcopal High School and the Washington, D.C., area,” says Doug. The sense of place, purpose, and community at Episcopal is what inspired his move from university teaching to a leadership role in the arts at EHS. During Doug’s 13 years at EHS, the arts have flourished and found an inspiring home in the beautiful Ainslie Arts Center.

In addition to his work at EHS, Doug has taught bassoon and interdisciplinary arts and directed study abroad programs in London, England, and Florence, Italy. At Episcopal, he coordinates the arts programs, teaches in the Performing Arts Department, serves on the Activities Team, and organizes the cultural activities aspect of the Washington Program.

With two degrees in music, Doug maintains an active performing life in the Washington area with groups such as the Filene Center Orchestra at Wolf Trap, the orchestra for the National Cathedral Choral Society, the National Gallery Orchestra, the Alexandria Symphony, Concert Artists of Baltimore, and the Washington Bach Consort.

Doug’s wife, Diane, is a member of the Anderson Dorm team. They have one son, Peter ’08.

Bradley D. Kovach 2013 SCIENCE M.A.T. UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS B.S. GROVE CITY COLLEGE

Bradley joined the Episcopal faculty after teaching science and math in the International Baccalaureate program at the Cayman International School in the Cayman Islands.

Prior to his career in education, Bradley spent several years conducting high-throughput genetic research as part of a small biotech startup in Memphis, Tenn. When asked about the experience, he commented, “Being on the cutting edge of our field was exhilarating and helped me to realize my desire to be an educator. I found that I was constantly seeking (or creating) opportunities to tell people about our work. I try to recreate this feeling in the classroom by facilitating discussion of the latest and greatest that science has to offer. I’ve found the most effective way to motivate a student to learn the history of a topic is by getting them excited to be engaged in its future.”

At Episcopal, he teaches chemistry and physics and coaches tennis. In addition to personal profile writing and meta-humor, Bradley enjoys sports, Nintendo, and games of chance. As a Pittsburgh native, he is also an avid Steelers and Penguins fan, and will support the Pirates when necessary.

Bradley coaches girls’ JV tennis, and lives on Berkeley Dorm with his wife, Alyssa, and their three dogs, Manolo, Dolce, and Gucci. They are expecting their first child in November 2013.

Carolyn came to Episcopal from Howard University, where she received a master’s degree in neuroscience. As a graduate student at Howard, she held various teaching assistant positions and worked as a research assistant in the biology labs of the National Institutes of Health and the Children’s National Medical Center.

Carolyn serves as co-dean of institutional diversity at EHS and says, “My goal is to aid Episcopal with its mission to develop as a healthy community that believes in a multicultural education and promotes equity for all regardless of culture, ethnicity, race, gender, or religion. I hope to encourage racial and cultural sensitivity within the School and develop within its students a sense of responsibility for equity and justice in the community as a whole.”

Carolyn is also the faculty advisor to Spectrum, a club that promotes diversity and inclusiveness in the EHS community, and serves as a student advisor. Carolyn lives in Laurel, Md., with her husband, André Phillips, and daughter, Anderson.

Jaye G. Locke 2006 ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS B.A. WILLIAMS COLLEGE

Jaye is a graduate of Greenwich Academy in Connecticut and Williams College. While at Williams, she started for four years and captained the varsity field hockey and squash teams. She was recognized as first team All-American and first team All-NESCAC in field hockey, while her team won two conference championships. She was president of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee and was Williams’ representative to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC).

Jaye is the associate director of admissions and head coach of the varsity field hockey team. She is a faculty advisor and a member of the Anderson Dorm team. She initially worked in the development office before becoming an admissions officer. Jaye has also served as the head coach of the girls’ varsity squash team and as the dorm head on Evans. She lives on campus with her husband, Ben, and their dog, Zeus.

Casey taught at Bellarmine College Prepatory School in California for 14 years as a teacher of AP environmental science and AP computer science. Additionally, he taught chemistry and was a cross country coach. While there, he was appointed as the school’s first environmental sustainability coordinator.

In addition to his work as director of sustainability at EHS, Casey teaches chemistry, coaches the cross country team, is on the Hoxton Dorm team. Casey and his wife, Megan, and infant son, Kaden, live in Alexandria.

Ashley R. McDowell 2010 SCIENCE A.B. BROWN UNIVERSITY

Ashley is a graduate of both National Cathedral School and Brown University. At Brown, she played on the lacrosse team and earned a bachelor’s degree in human biology, specifically focusing on the brain and behavior. For her capstone project, she assisted with hospital-based research on the cortisol levels of children in stressful situations whose mothers smoked during pregnancy. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in biology through Harvard University Extension School.

She began her teaching career as an elementary-level science teacher at The Pingry School in New Jersey.

In 2006, Ashley joined the faculty at St. Mark’s School in Massachusetts, where she taught biology, coached girls’ varsity lacrosse and field hockey, and served as head of a girls’ dormitory.

At Episcopal, Ashley teaches Advanced environmental science and biology. She is the head coach of the girls’ varsity lacrosse team, a junior grade dean, and head of Dalrymple Dorm.

A native of Spain, Rocío began teaching Spanish in 1988, first at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and then at North Cross School in Roanoke, Va., before coming to Episcopal.

Rocío believes that “teaching is the opportunity to tap into a student’s potential – to open their eyes to something new. It may or may not be their subject of interest, but as a teacher, to be passionate about a subject, any subject, at the very least sets an example for the student to explore their own passions.”

Rocío and her husband, EHS English teacher Tim Rogers ’79, live on campus, and have six children, including Teo ’12 and Louie ’15.

J. Michael Miller 1969 SOCIAL STUDIES PH.D. GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY M.A. GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY A.B. PRINCETON UNIVERSITY

Mike came to Episcopal in 1969. He has been dean of faculty, academic dean, and assistant head for academics, but what he has enjoyed most is his time in the classroom. He has taught many social studies classes, including world history, AP modern European history, Russian and Eastern European history, the modern Middle East, and AP economics. He also worked for the College Board to develop the AP economics examination. Mike’s children, Zack ’94 and Cassie ’95, have given him an even closer connection to EHS. In addition to teaching social studies, Mike serves on the administrative duty team and assists with special projects in the Technology Department, including his role as the administrator of Blackboard, our platform for instructional delivery. He believes that computer technology can make many of the tasks of education easier for teachers and students. Mike previously served as the chair of the Social Studies Department.

Mike lives on campus with his wife, Kay, and youngest daughter, Isabel ’17. When not teaching or reading, he enjoys building, landscaping, and spending time with his family at their mountain cabin in West Virginia.

Eleanor C. Moore 1999 FRENCH M.A. UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA B.A. HOLLINS UNIVERSITY

Eleanor joined EHS after eight years at Christ Church Episcopal School in South Carolina, where she taught French 1 through AP French, chaired the Foreign Language Department, coached field hockey, and advised the yearbook staff.

At Episcopal, Eleanor teaches French, is a senior class dean, is a member of the Dalrymple Dorm team, and serves as an advisor to the “Whispers” yearbook staff. She has enjoyed accompanying students on the EHS Summer Program in France during several summers and always appreciates the opportunity to participate in the exchange with Lycée Stanislas on both sides of the Atlantic.

Her interest in French started when she spent time in France as a student in high school and college.

While studying in Paris through the Hollins Abroad Program, Eleanor attended literature courses at the Sorbonne. In her classes, Eleanor likes to incorporate her love of Francophone literature, cinema, art, and history, and she hopes to help share her enthusiasm for Francophone cultures with others. Eleanor’s hobbies include reading, photography, cooking, and travel (not just to French-speaking countries!).

Eleanor lives on campus with her husband, Toby; their daughters, Cecilia and Olivia; and son, Wyatt.

J. Whittelsey Morgan 1987 ENGLISH M.A.L.A. ST. JOHN’S COLLEGE M.A.T. UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL B.A. UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL

After beginning his teaching career in Burlington, N.C., Whit arrived at Episcopal in 1987 and has been actively engaged in EHS students’ lives ever since.

He teaches English, coaches the varsity golf and JV boys’ squash teams, and is a member of the evening study hall team.

Whit was awarded the Olsson Sabbatical for the 2006-07 school year, which he used to complete a second master’s degree at St. John’s College in Annapolis, Md., and Santa Fe, N.M. Whit spent eight summers teaching Shakespeare to American college students in Oxford, England. At Episcopal, he enjoys teaching a spring Shakespeare elective to seniors and taking advantage of local theaters. Whit; his wife, Alison Grossman; and their children, Natalie ’17 and Jacob, live on campus.

A graduate of The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, Mason came to Episcopal from Severn School in Annapolis, Md., where he taught Latin and assisted with lacrosse. He also served six years in the Marine Corps Reserve. Mason was selected as one of the 2004 Alexandria Education Partnership Excellence in Education Award winners.

In addition to his role as chair of the English Department, Mason teaches English and Latin I, and serves as a co-dean of the 12th grade. He is also the head coach of boys’ junior lacrosse and a member of the Berkeley Dorm team, where he lives with his wife, Melissa, and their children, Ibby and Mason.

Kristy L. Newton 2007 LIBRARIAN M.A. UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI M.A. UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI B.A. ARKANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY

Kate earned master’s degrees in both religious studies and information science and learning technology from the University of Missouri. She completed her undergraduate degree in philosophy from Arkansas State University.

Before joining the EHS faculty, Kate worked in the libraries at both Idaho State University and the University of Missouri. She taught courses in library research at both universities, as well as classes in religious studies and philosophy at Missouri.

As a librarian in Episcopal’s David H. March Library, Kate combines her teaching and research experience to assist students with their academic and extracurricular needs.

She lives in Centreville, Va., with her husband, Josh, and their four cats.

Meg came to Episcopal from Shakespeare & Company, a professional theater company in Massachusetts, where she worked as an actor, artist-in-residence for the education department, and director of the young artist summer training program. Before that, she launched theater programs at Trinity Pawling School in New York and Cannon School in North Carolina. Meg earned her bachelor’s degree in English and theater from Wesleyan University and her graduate degree from the Chicago College of Performing Arts.

In addition to directing and designing the theatrical productions at EHS, she teaches Acting 1, Acting 2, and Introduction to the Arts. She also serves as faculty sponsor for 360, a club that produces a variety of performance events for the school community.

Meg lives on Dalrymple Dorm.

Kimberly G. Olsen 2004 CHAIR OF SCIENCE PH.D. INDIANA UNIVERSITY B.S. RHODES COLLEGE

Kim became chair of Episcopal’s Science Department after serving eight years as an associate professor of chemistry at Loyola College in Maryland. She was a tenured professor teaching general and analytical chemistry and a research associate at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. A graduate of Rhodes College, Kim pursued her doctoral degree in analytical electrochemistry and enjoys sharing her passion for science with students at Episcopal.

In addition to her responsibilities in the Science Department, Kim serves as a member of the Harrison Dorm team and as an advisor to the yearbook, “Whispers,” and the Science Olympiad team.

When asked what she likes most about teaching at Episcopal, she said that she “enjoys the close connections that I am able to make with students in a 100 percent boarding community. I love seeing young people grow and discover something about themselves as they gain academic and personal confidence day by day.” Kim and her husband, Kaj, live on campus with their sons, Stefan and Erik.

Brad earned both his bachelor’s degree in English and his master’s degree in teaching, with a focus on English, from the University of Virginia. He began his teaching career at the Leysin American School in Switzerland, where he was head of the English Department, dormitory head, soccer coach, and a member of the Honor Council. After three years at Leysin, he returned to the United States to teach freshman English in Hanover County, Va. He left the classroom to work with corporate clients at an organization called Play, a creative consultancy. There he motivated and inspired clients to utilize a creative approach to problem solving. Brad then worked with Royall and Company, a firm that specializes in working with college and university admission directors and vice presidents to develop their brands and implement strategies to accomplish enrollment goals. He was pleased to return to an educational community at EHS. In addition to teaching English, Brad is an assistant coach for boys’ varsity soccer and boys’ JV basketball.

He also serves as an 11th grade dean and interviews candidates for admissions. He lives on campus with his wife, Amy, and their daughters, Savannah and Celie.

Brad is spending the 2013-14 school year teaching English at our school year Abroad partner school in Vetirbo, Italy.

David M. Phillips, Jr. 1992 MATHEMATICS, SOCIAL STUDIES M.B.A. DUKE UNIVERSITY B.A. BUCKNELL UNIVERSITY

Dave opted out of the corporate world after working for American Express in New York City and returning for an M.B.A. with the intent of moving up the corporate ladder. He made a career and lifestyle change when he came to Episcopal in 1992. At Episcopal, he teaches math and advanced human geography. He coaches track in the winter and officiates at track meets in the spring. During his tenure at EHS, he was director of financial aid for six years and continues to serve on the Financial Aid Committee. Dave serves on the Hummel Dorm team and is a student advisor.

Dave enjoys spending his summers at the Jersey Shore with his family and is an avid skier. Dave and his wife, Nancy, live in Alexandria with their children, Chip, Michele, Timothy ’15, and Erin.

Frank earned a bachelor’s degree with high honors in studio art and English and was awarded the Arthur Dove Art Prize at Hobart College. Additionally, he graduated with a minor in art history. Frank also was a four-year starter for the men’s varsity soccer team and a resident advisor while at Hobart.

Frank has a master’s degree in fine arts, with a concentration in painting, from the Maryland Institute College of Art. At Episcopal, he teaches a variety of courses in the visual arts, and he is the co-director and co-curator of the Angie Newman Johnson Gallery in the Ainslie Arts Center. In addition, Frank is head coach of boys’ varsity squash, assistant coach of boys’ varsity soccer, and a student advisor.

He lives on Berkeley Dorm with his dog, Charlie.

Scott R. Pohjola 2009 SCIENCE INNOVATIVE LEARNING RESOURCE COORDINATOR M.A.T. COLORADO COLLEGE B.S. TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY

Scott joined Episcopal’s science faculty after teaching physics and chemistry in the International Baccalaureate Program at Rampart High School in Colorado for five years. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University and his master’s degree in teaching secondary science from Colorado College.

In addition to teaching science, Scott assists with Episcopal’s outdoor programs. He has extensive experience in this field, having been an adventure guide and instructor with Noah’s Ark Whitewater Rafting Company and Adventure Program from 1999 to 2004.

Scott also serves on the Hummel Dorm team. He and his wife, Hartley, live on Hummel Dorm with their daughters, Elizabeth and Mary Blue, and their dog, Carson.

The Rev. Gideon L. K. Pollach 2007 HEAD CHAPLAIN, THEOLOGY M.DIV. THE GENERAL THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY B.A. TRINITY COLLEGE

A graduate of St. Albans School, Gideon returned to the Washington, D.C., area to assume the responsibilities of head chaplain at EHS. He earned his bachelor’s degree in music from Trinity College, where he received the Morris Prize for outstanding academic achievement.

He also was granted the Thomas J. Watson Foundation Fellowship, which affords students the opportunity to conduct independent research outside the United States. He graduated cum laude from The General Theological Seminary in New York.

Gideon was clerk to the Rt. Reverend Peter James Lee, Bishop of Virginia, and later served as director of Christian education at Christ Episcopal Church in Alexandria, Va., planning and executing educational programs for the 2,500-member parish. He also served as director of youth ministries at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Richmond, a similar role with a focus on education and outreach for middle and upper school students.

At Episcopal, Gideon is the faculty advisor to the Vestry and the Service Council, in addition to overseeing the chapel program and teaching theology courses. He lives on campus with his wife, Sarah, a geriatric nurse practitioner; their son, Woodford; and two daughters, Peyton and Tilghman.

Molly W. Pugh 2008 ENGLISH M.A. MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE A.B. PRINCETON UNIVERSITY

Molly is a graduate of Princeton University, where she was an English and pre-med major. She earned her master’s degree in English from Middlebury College’s Breadloaf School of English.

She began her teaching career at The Taft School in Connecticut. After three years, Molly joined the faculty at Charlotte Country Day in North Carolina.

Most recently she taught English for two years at the Chinese International School in Hong Kong. She also has coached volleyball, basketball, crew, rock climbing, and cross country.

At Episcopal, Molly teaches English, heads Anderson Dorm where all 9th grade girls live, and is a 9th grade academic dean. She also co-facilitates a year-long professional development class for faculty entitled SEED (Seeking Educational Equity through Diversity), is a participant in a voluntary collaborative study group that explores and plans interdisciplinary curricular initiatives, and serves on the Diversity Committee. Molly and her husband, Bill, along with their daughters, Meredith and Alwen, live on Anderson Dorm.

At the University of Virginia, Lionel studied math and psychology, played club ultimate Frisbee, and honed his counseling and teaching skills during several summers at the on-grounds Summer Enrichment Program. After graduating from college, he spent two years in Washington, D.C., as a research fellow at the National Institute of Mental Health, investigating human vision with functional MRI. Now at EHS, he is ecstatic to have achieved his dream job: teaching math. Lionel also serves as an assistant coach on the boys’ junior soccer, basketball, and track teams. In his free time he enjoys running, Frisbee, eating, and riddle solving. He lives on Hummel Dorm.

Michael S. Reynolds 2008 SOCIAL STUDIES M.A. THE CITADEL – UNIVERSITY OF CHARLESTON B.A. PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE

Mike completed his undergraduate degree in history at Presbyterian College, where he also lettered in football. He then earned a master’s degree in history through a joint program at The Citadel and the University of Charleston, majoring in United States history and minoring in both Latin American and European history.

His teaching experience includes positions at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, S.C., The Citadel, and the University of South Carolina. Mike has been published in “The South Carolina Encyclopedia” and The South Carolina Historical Magazine, and he is currently a candidate for a doctoral degree in history from the University of South Carolina.

Mike teaches U.S. history and coaches varsity football and track at EHS. He is co-dean of the 9th grade and is head of Hummel Dorm, where he lives with his wife, Catherine, and their two dogs, Scout and Rosie.

An American literature specialist with an interest in detective fiction, Tim has taught courses in these disciplines at Episcopal for many years. Prior to coming to EHS, he taught in Japan, Atlanta, and his hometown of Roanoke, Va. He teaches younger children through the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth program in the summer and has also served as a reading consultant for the AP exam in language and composition.

At Episcopal, Tim is faculty advisor to the Honor Committee, serves on the Administrative Duty Team, directs the Writing Center, and coaches boys’ junior lacrosse and cross training. He lives on campus with his wife, EHS Spanish teacher Rocío Mendizábal, and their three children, including Teo ’12 and Louie ’15.

Samuel R. Slack 2007 SPANISH M.A. GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY B.A. UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND

Sam is a graduate of the University of Richmond, where he majored in Spanish and international studies and was elected to the Hispanic Honor Society.

He produced a radio program for the campus radio station and had his artwork selected for inclusion in an exhibit at Richmond’s Marsh Art Gallery. Sam spent a semester living, studying, and playing basketball for a college, ITESO, in Guadalajara, Mexico.

He recently earned a master’s degree in Latin American Studies at Georgetown University.

Sam joined the EHS faculty in 2007 after spending three years at Westtown School in Pennsylvania, where he taught Spanish and served as co-facilitator for the Mexican Exchange Program and senior class advisor. He was also a dorm parent and coached basketball and track.

In addition to teaching Spanish and Latin American history at EHS, Sam also serves on the Student Assistance Team, is head coach of the junior basketball team, and is assistant coach for the track and field team. He is on the McGuire Dorm team, and he lives on campus with his wife, Charissa; their sons, Riker and Sebastian; and their daughter, Adella Lucia.

Louis G. Smith 2012 ENGLISH J.D. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, HASTINGS COLLEGE OF THE LAW B.A. WILLIAMS COLLEGE

Louis began his teaching career at the Brooks School in North Andover, Mass.; after earning a B.A. from Williams College, where he played football, lacrosse, and rugby. At Brooks, Louis taught English, journalism, and studio art; coached football, lacrosse, and girls’ ice hockey; and ran a dormitory while advising a group of 10 students. He also worked in admissions, conducting interviews and evaluating prospective students. Notwithstanding a teaching hiatus during which he earned a law degree, clerked for federal judge John Garrett Penn, and was a commercial litigator with the Washington firm of Boies, Schiller & Flexner, Louis’ love of teaching motivated him to return to the classroom. He resolved to do so by teaching English at Washington’s Sidwell Friends School while continuing his private law practice. That experience led him to leave the practice of law altogether and accept a position on the Episcopal faculty. At EHS, Louis teaches English, coaches varsity football and JV boys’ lacrosse, works with an advisory of freshman boys, and is a member of the Hummel Dorm team.

Louis is an avid fan of music, playing guitar and singing from time to time with local bands. He lives on campus with his three boys, William, Max, and Charlie, and their dog, Red.

Kevin F. Soja 2010 DEAN OF STUDENTS, ENGLISH M.A. COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY B.A. COLBY COLLEGE

Kevin is no stranger to the ins and outs of boarding school life; he graduated from The Hotchkiss School in Connecticut before attending Colby College. At Colby, he majored in American studies, minored in education, and received the Norman R. White Award for inspirational leadership and sportsmanship.

In 1998, he joined the faculty at Millbrook School in New York. During his tenure at the boarding high school, Kevin served as assistant headmaster, dean of students, associate director of admissions, and English teacher. In addition, he was a dorm head, lacrosse and ice hockey coach, faculty advisor, and form advisor to the Class of 2005. In 2003, Kevin earned a master’s degree in educational leadership from the Teachers College at Columbia University.

Kevin serves as Episcopal’s dean of students and teaches 9th grade English. He also coaches boys’ varsity lacrosse and is a member of the Administrative Duty Team. He lives on campus with his wife, Jody, and their sons, Russell and William.

Brandon J. Straub 2011 DIRECTOR OF CHORAL MUSIC M.M. UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN B.A. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY

Brandon joined the faculty of EHS in 2011 and is regularly in demand as a conductor, accompanist, singer, and continuo player. He earned M.M. degrees in conducting and harpsichord performance at the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree in voice and music education at Michigan State University. Prior to attending graduate school, he served for four years as the Oaklawn-Tuttle chair of vocal music and school organist at The Hill School and served for five summers as a conductor, coach-accompanist, and instructor of advanced musicianship on the faculties of the New York State Summer School for the Arts (NYSSSA) and Interlochen Arts Camp. He has attended summer programs at Oberlin Conservatory, Eastman School of Music, Westminster Choir College, and the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute.

In addition to his roles at EHS, Brandon is the associate conductor and pianist of the Choral Arts Society of Washington and is active as a singer, regularly performing with the professional choirs of such churches as St. John’s Church Lafayette Square and Washington National Cathedral. As a pianist and harpsichordist, he has collaborated on several occasions with members of the National Chamber Players at EHS. At Episcopal, Brandon directs the School’s choral and a cappella ensembles, teaches Introduction to the Arts and Religious Thought in Music, coordinates and oversees music for chapel services, serves as music director for musicals, teaches private voice and piano lessons, and lives on McGuire Dormitory.

Jeffrey A. Streed 1982 LATIN, GREEK M.A. UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA B.A. STANFORD UNIVERSITY

Jeff, who appreciates “the kids, the classics, and the spirit” at EHS, does much to encourage the wholesome way of life at Episcopal. In addition to taking students to Italy every year, Jeff coaches Maroon and Black soccer and serves on the Activities Team. He regularly changes his Greek and Latin texts and syllabi in order to further his own expertise. A recent project of Jeff’s is to help his students in their original research on the School’s wonderful collection of rare books in Latin from the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Jeff and his wife, Melanie, live on campus and have three sons, Eric ’09, Sam ’13, and Jack ’17.

Richard M. Stubbs 1977 MATHEMATICS B.S. UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AT AMHERST

Quite familiar with boarding school life, Rick grew up at Milton Academy in Milton, Mass., where his father was a member of the Science Department and his mother worked in the library. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, he joined the EHS faculty. He served as chair of mathematics from 1990 to 2002. Rick has worked with the baseball program at EHS and was Episcopal’s boys’ varsity soccer and baseball coach for 14 years.

He currently is an assistant coach for girls’ varsity soccer and a member of the Administrative Duty team. He also serves as a junior class advisor.

He spent four summers volunteering at the John F. Kennedy Library archives in Boston, working on educational programs and with Robert Kennedy’s papers. When describing the personal values that most influence his work at EHS, Rick reflected, “Robert Kennedy gave an historic speech in South Africa in 1966 about sending ‘tiny ripples of hope’ that, coming from all corners of the planet, rise up into a tidal wave of change for the human good. Though my influence is not nearly that ‘worldly,’ it is my goal, as a teacher, coach, or advisor, to try to provide a few tiny ripples in a young person’s life that make a positive difference.”

Patrick W. Thompson 2005 MATHEMATICS DIRECTOR OF OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP PROGRAM B.A. DAVIDSON COLLEGE

Patrick attended St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, Va., and went on to earn his degree in economics from Davidson College in North Carolina.

At Episcopal, he teaches Honors Precalculus and Advanced Calculus. As director of the Episcopal Outdoor Leadership Program, and an avid outdoorsman, he runs the freshman Burch Trip and coaches whitewater kayaking and rock climbing.

Patrick lives on campus with his wife, Mindy; their son, Bruce; and their daughter, Renny. He serves on the Hoxton Dorm team. Mindy serves on the Anderson Dorm team.

Elizabeth A. Vorlicek 2005 VISUAL ARTS M.F.A. NEW YORK STATE COLLEGE OF CERAMICS AT ALFRED UNIVERSITY B.F.A. NEW YORK STATE COLLEGE OF CERAMICS AT ALFRED UNIVERSITY

Liz has M.F.A. and B.F.A. degrees from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Liz joined the faculty at Episcopal in 2005 and teaches Ceramics 1, Ceramics 2, Advanced Studio Art: 3-D Design, Introduction to the Arts, and Afternoon Art. Liz is the director of the Angie Newman Johnson Gallery, a faculty advisor for the EHS Visual Arts Club, a student advisor, and part of the Activities team. She also served on the Harrison Dorm team for seven years.

Liz is passionate about bringing visiting artists to the Ainslie Arts Center to exhibit in the gallery and work with Episcopal’s student body. Liz is a visual artist and shows her sculpture and collage work regionally and nationally. Liz was on sabbatical in the 2012-13 school year and had the opportunity to attend classes and conferences, visit other independent schools, make and exhibit her own artwork, and take up the sport of long boarding. She and her husband, Nat Duffield, live on campus in a home next to Hoxton House and enjoy bird watching, gardening, cooking, and traveling in their spare time.

Panos J. Voulgaris 2012 ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS HEAD VARSITY FOOTBALL COACH B.A. MERRIMACK COLLEGE

Panos joined the Episcopal faculty in 2012 and currently serves as assistant director of admissions and head football coach. He came to the School after having served as head football coach, history teacher, and admissions officer at the Taft School in Watertown, Conn., for five years where he led the football team to its first undefeated New England championship in nearly 30 years.

Prior to Taft, Panos spent two years at Blair Academy in Blairstown, N.J., where he worked in the History Department and admissions office, while also assisting the football team. A native of North Andover, Mass., Panos is a graduate of Blair Academy, and Merrimack College, where he was a three-time recipient of the Northeast-10 Athletic Conference Gold Scholar Award and a summa cum laude graduate.

Panos is currently in the process of completing his master’s degree from Harvard University.

Damian C. Walsh 2003 DIRECTOR OF SUMMER PROGRAMS, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS M.ED. UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE CHATTANOOGA B.S. UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE - CHATTANOOGA

As a former professional athlete, Damian is well versed in the training and support an athlete needs to thrive. He has competed internationally for Canada in the sport of track and field and placed 11th in the 2005 World International Triathlon Union Amateur Championships in Honolulu, Hawaii. He also was named as Canada’s Amateur Triathlete of the Year in 2005, and he became a professional triathlete in 2006.

Damian earned both his graduate and undergraduate degrees in exercise science from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and served as a graduate assistant both there and at Eastern Illinois University. In addition to his roles as Episcopal’s director of summer programs and assistant director of athletics, he also is a student advisor, has taught sophomore health, and is the director of boys’ and girls’ track and field. Damian lives on McGuire Dorm with his wife, Jolene; their son, Aidan; and their daughter, Claire.

Julie Wang-Gempp 2006 MANDARIN CHINESE, SOCIAL STUDIES CHINESE TEACHING CERTIFICATE, NANJING UNIVERSITY M.A. MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY M.A. SICHUAN UNIVERSITY B.A. SHANXI TEACHERS UNIVERSITY

Julie has extensive experience teaching English in China and Chinese in America. She was a college lecturer in China for more than 10 years and has spent seven years in the United States as a speech analyst, Chinese legal translator, computer teacher, and Mandarin Chinese teacher. For two years, Julie was a Mandarin Chinese instructor at Montclair State University, where she incorporated her language background, cultural knowledge, and technological know-how into her classroom teaching. She believes that her role as an educator at EHS is not just about teaching Chinese language and culture. “I need to encourage students’ natural curiosity and help facilitate the development of creative and critical thinking, skills that will prepare individual students for their future beyond the Episcopal classrooms. The seeds are planted here, and what students learn and how they learn it will form the basis for their future education.”

In addition to teaching Mandarin Chinese, she also teaches a social studies course called Understanding Modern China. Julie is an advisor, works on the yearbook, and coaches in the cross training program. She lives on campus and is a member of the Harrison Dorm team.

“Teaching and coaching young people has many rewards in the present and in the future. Regularly renewing friendships with successful EHS graduates ranks right up there with seeing the light go on in the classroom or a students’ success in an extracurricular activity,” says Bobby Watts, a veteran member of the faculty.

Bobby graduated from Virginia Episcopal School and Virginia Military Institute. After serving in Vietnam, he spent four years at VES as a history teacher, coach, and director of admissions. He then had a career in business for 12 years, but he never strayed from education, as he continued to serve VES as a volunteer and trustee.

At EHS, Bobby teaches social studies and coaches varsity track. He lives on campus with his wife, Elizabeth. They have two children, Rob ’98 and Betsy ’00.

Frederick J. Wilcox IV 1994 DIRECTOR OF ALUMNI AND PARENT PROGRAMS B.A. RANDOLPH-MACON COLLEGE

Rick leads the effort to strengthen the School’s relationships with key constituency groups in order to increase engagement, volunteerism, and philanthropic support.

During his tenure at Episcopal, Rick has served as a soccer coach, dorm parent, and advisor. As an advancement officer, he enjoys hearing testimonials about how impactful the EHS experience has been for alumni.

Since becoming the head coach of boys’ soccer in 2000, Rick has coached numerous players who have gone on to have successful careers in college soccer, including two players who were recognized as The Washington Post’s All-Met Player of the Year. Rick has coached Episcopal to three league championships and state titles in 2008, 2009, and 2011.

Rick is a graduate of Westminster School in Connecticut and holds a B.A. in English from RandolphMacon College, where he was a resident assistant, captain of the varsity soccer team, and an all-conference selection. Rick is the director of goalkeeping for the Alexandria Soccer Association and continues to enjoy playing soccer as well as golf.

He and his wife, Emily Straight, live on campus with their daughter, Lilly, and son, Eli.

Emily C. Wilkinson 2012 ENGLISH PH.D. STANFORD UNIVERSITY B.A. COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

Emily came to Episcopal from The College of William and Mary where she served as a visiting professor of English. She has also worked as an adjunct professor at Stanford University where she earned her Ph.D. and Christopher Newport University.

She teaches two sections of 9th grade English as well as assists with the JV girls’ soccer team. In addition, she serves on the Activities Team.

Stacie R. Galiger Williams 2004 ASSOCIATE DEAN OF STUDENTS, MATHEMATICS M.ED. HARVARD UNIVERSITY B.A. COLBY COLLEGE

Before coming to Episcopal, Stacie worked for two years in the dean of students’ office at Miss Porter’s School, where she designed the student life curriculum, worked closely with student leaders, founded a Habitat for Humanity initiative, served as an assistant dormitory director, and coached. Prior to that, she worked as coordinator of residential life in the summer program of the Leysin American School in Switzerland and has also spent summers working for Duke University’s Talent Identification Program in North Carolina and Greece.

In addition to her primary assignment in the Dean’s Office, Stacie teaches mathematics, coaches girls’ JV field hockey, and serves as head of Harrison Dorm.

She is also the primary organizer of the new student orientation program. Stacie lives on Harrison with her husband, Jeffrey; their daughters, Zoe, Grace, and Stella; and their cats, Pi and Elcie.

Helen S. Woolworth 2011 ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS B.S. DAVIDSON COLLEGE

Helen earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Davidson College, where she majored in psychology and developed a passion for adolescent psychology in particular. Before attending Davidson, Helen completed her freshman year at Dartmouth and competed on their varsity squash team. She then took a year off from school and spent three months in India studying comparative religion and yoga.

After graduating from college, she worked as an intern in the admissions office at her alma mater, Groton School in Massachusetts, also assisting with their squash program and serving as a member of a dorm team.

Helen is a member of the admissions office at EHS, and in addition to her work there, is the head coach for girls’ varsity squash, an advisor to freshman girls, a faculty advisor for the Maroon Mentor program, and director of academic summer programs. She lives on Dalrymple Dormitory.
