Introduction
The Rev. Canon Stephanie Spellers (‘04)
Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you (Genesis 12:1, NEV)
The story of the Episcopal Divinity School is one of being called out from familiar places to a new land to continue the mission of doing God’s work in the world.
EDS was founded in 1974 when the Philadelphia Divinity School left its familiar land and moved to Cambridge to merge with the Episcopal Theological School. At that time, the deans of the two schools Edward Harris and Harvey Guthrie wrote to the PDS and ETS community concerning the significance of the merger. Their words continue to speak to us today as the EDS story continues. They wrote this:
“The merger of ETS and PDS into EDS is neither the beginning of the Kingdom of God nor one of the biggest things in the history of the Church. Its significance fades before the real issues before the Church today: racism and discrimination against women and social justice and national morality and spiritual hunger and human need of many kinds. The significance of the merger finally lies in the necessity to walk away from the structures of the past, filled with blessings as they were, into the future into which God calls us.”
Fifty years later, the real issues facing the church remain the same and are intensified by an accelerating climate crisis. Now, as then, Episcopal Divinity School embraces its call to form leaders who will meet the moment with faith, courage, and moral clarity. Now is a time for liberation, and liberating theological education requires responding to the legacy of colonialism in our midst, described by historian and former EDS faculty member Dr. Fredrica Harris Thompsett as “a lethal combination of clericalism, racism, and economic exploitation which turns religion into a tool of the status quo.” EDS invites the wider church to join us in this important work as it recommits to a mission of educating leaders (of every order) for Christ's Church and for the world as they serve and advance God's mission of justice, compassion, and reconciliation.
Liturgy of the Word
Presider Grace to you and peace from God our Creator, the love at our beginning and without end, in our midst and with us.
All God is with us, here we find new life.
How Can I Keep From Singing
Robert Lowry
Presider The Lord be with you.
All And also with you.
Presider Let us pray.
O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquility the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Hymn
A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah
Mr. Thomas Diaz & The Rev. Norma Guerra
1 A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.
2 The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
3 His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear;
4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
5 Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins.
6 The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them.
7 The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
8 The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder's den.
9 They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
10 On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.
(Isaiah 11:1–10)
Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying.
All Thanks be to God.

A Litany for Survival
By Audre Lorde
The Rev. Adriene Thorne
For those of us who live at the shoreline standing upon the constant edges of decision crucial and alone for those of us who cannot indulge the passing dreams of choice who love in doorways coming and going in the hours between dawns looking inward and outward at once before and after seeking a now that can breed futures like bread in our children’s mouths so their dreams will not reflect the death of ours; For those of us who were imprinted with fear like a faint line in the center of our foreheads learning to be afraid with our mother’s milk for by this weapon this illusion of some safety to be found the heavy-footed hoped to silence us For all of us this instant and this triumph We were never meant to survive. And when the sun rises we are afraid it might not remain when the sun sets we are afraid it might not rise in the morning when our stomachs are full we are afraid of indigestion when our stomachs are empty we are afraid we may never eat again when we are loved we are afraid love will vanish when we are alone we are afraid love will never return and when we speak we are afraid our words will not be heard nor welcomed but when we are silent we are still afraid So it is better to speak remembering we were never meant to survive.
Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
All Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Deacon Jesus said to his disciples, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say to him, `Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; for a friend of mine has arrived, and I have nothing to set before him.' And he answers from within, `Do not bother me; the door has already been locked, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.' I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, at least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs. "So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened." (Luke 11:5–10)

All Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Tonight's offering will support Episcopal Divinity School's Racial Justice Fund. You may use this QR code to give online.
The Racial Justice Fund at Episcopal Divinity School (EDS) serves to advance the ongoing commitment to equity and racial justice as expressed by the leadership of EDS. Originally established to support classroom and experiential learning opportunities in the area of racial justice for students at EDS at Union, this fund remains dedicated to enriching the formation of future faith leaders. As EDS embarks on a new chapter as an independent institution, the Racial Justice Fund will continue to ensure that theological education prioritizes racial equity and justice, creating transformative formation experiences that prepare students to engage with and challenge systemic injustices in their communities.

The Great Thanksgiving
Presider The Lord is with you.
All And also with you.
Presider Lift up your hearts.
All We lift them to the Lord.
Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All It is right to give God thanks and praise.
Presider It is indeed right, for you made us, and before us, you made the world we inhabit, and before the world, you made the eternal home in which, through Christ, we have a place.
All that is spectacular, all that is plain, have their origin in you; all that is lovely, all who are loving, point to you as their fulfillment.
Sanctus
And grateful as we are for the world we know and the universe beyond our understanding, we particularly praise you, whom eternity cannot contain, for coming to earth and entering time in Jesus.
For his life which informs our living, for his compassion which changes our hearts, for his clear speaking which contradicts our harmless generalities, for his disturbing presence, his innocent suffering, his fearless dying, his rising to life breathing forgiveness, we give praise and worship.
Here too our gratitude rises for the promise of the Holy Spirit, who even yet, even now, confronts us with your claims and attracts us to your goodness.
Therefore we gladly join our voices to the song of the Church on earth and in heaven:
Presider And now, lest we believe that our praise alone fulfills your purpose, we fall silent and remember him who came because words weren't enough.
Setting our wisdom, our will, our words aside, emptying our hearts, and bringing nothing in our hands, we yearn for the healing, the holding, the accepting, the forgiving which Christ offers us fully.
Silence
And so, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of Christ.
Among friends, gathered around a table, Jesus took bread, and broke it, and said, “Take, eat: This is my body-broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
Later he took the cup of wine and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
He whom the universe could not contain, is present to us in this bread. He who redeemed us and called us by name now meets us in this cup.
Let us pray with the words that Jesus taught us: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
The Communion
The Bread will be passed around the circle, as is the tradition at St. Mark's. To receive, first take the bread and then pass it to your neighbor, saying: “The Body of Christ, the Bread of Heaven.”
Everyone is welcome to receive and share in the sacrament. If you do not wish to receive, you can simply pass the plate.
Individuals can receive the chalice or a blessing from the celebrants as they come around.
Gluten-free bread will be distributed as well.
Presider We break this bread to share in the Body of Christ.
All We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.
