For mains, the Aged Beef ribeye from New Zealand, dry-aged for 28 days, is tender and flavourful when medium rare. Tay jazzes up the dish by changing the accompanying sauce and vegetables daily.

Their romantically named Sull’Imbrunire (or At Dusk), a tomato and truffle pizza with toppings such as mozzarella, soppa ham, mushrooms, arugula and soft-cooked egg, is also noteworthy.

The desserts are a wonderfully whimsical experience, especially the dessert charcuterie plate that is a playful take on a salami and cured meat platter − think raspberry and Green Apple Prosciutto, Chocolate Salami, Milk Chocolate and Caramelized Onion Pâté with Whiskey Caramel Jelly and Bacon Jam.

During his spare time, he would experiment on new recipes and give the dishes to his neighbours to try. Soon, his food became popular in his neighbourhood and people started to request he cook the dishes for them. This inspired him to start his own restaurant.

The first outlet at Tank Road was setup in the 1950's, after which it moved to Pearl's Hill Center. The restaurant eventually moved into its Dempsey Road premises in the 1970's, with a much bigger space to cope with the increasing customers. To this day, it remains a family-run establishment, keeping the Southern Indian tradition of serving food on banana leaves.

Their delicious Fish Head Curry, prepared using a special blend of spices, tomatoes, okra and brinjal, remains a firm crowd favourite. Daniel Sia, founder and chef of The Disgruntled Chef, celebrates the restaurant’s fifth anniversary in extraordinary style by opening his second restaurant on Ann Siang Hill.

The 2,000 sq ft duplex is charming by day and enigmatic by night. Key elements such as the wooden tables, black marble bar, and grey walls of the main dining area are very in line with the brand’s DNA. high temperatures but with very little smoke, save for when dripping meat juices causes the occasional sizzle, which is perfect for preserving the natural flavours of the meat while introducing just a hint of smokiness.

House specialities include grilled ribeye and sirloin.

The beef comes from Angus cattle that are raised on highly nutritious pastures and in stress-free environments. The cows are then put on a grainfeeding programme to achieve the optimum level of marbling,

which gives tenderness and juiciness to the meat. The tender, succulent grilled rack of lamb uses Wakanui spring lamb from the renowned lamb-producing region of Canterbury.

Apart from the signature grilled meats, do also try their classic New Zealand desserts such as the Wakanui Anna Pavlova, which bears a thin crust on the outside but is chewy on the inside; and the Hokey Pokey Ice Cream with a mild, soothing aftertaste of honey.
