The project aimed to design a bamboo theatre which can be constructed by a community primarily by hand. This structure is flexible and can be reconfigured to meet the needs of the users. The users also being the builders required simple joints attached in a beam and column system with regular centre. The escape routes through 3 central cores were established as more permanent elements to allow safety of occupants in the event of a fire. The more complex tectonic language came from the way in which this structure would gain strength from the two tanks of the tanker ship in which it occupied. This was resolved by a careful study of the existing wall of these tanks which were altered only by removing a steel outer membrane and attaching a steel plate and welded pipe to allow the bamboo to be attached to the inner hull wall, stabilising the frame.
The quality of light was important and therefore watertight punctures were made to the upper deck to allow for dramatic lighting and the suspension of props.
