BENEFITS OF CLIMBING AT SCHOOL WHY INVEST IN A CLIMBING STRUCTURE?

Climbing is an increasingly popular sport, especially due to its appearance at the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo. Known for its practice in natural environments, climbing is being practiced more and more indoors and in urban areas. This sport comes with many virtues, beneficial to self-development. Movements require a high level of body awareness. This gives students the ability to analyse and understand what is facing them. Indoor Climbing can be a powerful part of a high-quality physical education program. It is a very attractive activity that offers a great alternative to traditional team sports. Moreover, the paramedical community recommends the practice of climbing for the proper development of motor and mental abilities.

PRIMARY & SECONDARY SCHOOLS Introducing children to climbing is above all an excellent way to develop their motor skills. They learn how to become aware of their body on the wall, to apprehend certain movements that are sometimes new to them. It’s an introduction to set simple goals for them = go to the top of the challenge, or cross the whole wall. Throughout the year or over the school years, goals can evolve. Traverse walls, for example, can have several levels of route setting; fun climbing challenges also exist in multiple levels of difficulty. Time targets can also be established. Learning how to climb at a very young age is the best way for a child to progress quickly and to develop strong values in favour of the environment.

TRAVERSE WALLS Traverse walls are meant to be climbed horizontally instead of vertically, this is a format called ‘bouldering’. This is done above a safety surface, thickness depends on the height of the wall and without ropes and harnesses. The fun and challenge of a Traverse Wall is to make it from one side to the other, rather than to the top. Students are never more than a few feet off the floor as they traverse the wall. A traverse wall is a great way for initiation and can be installed almost everywhere.

PARK & PLAYGROUND BOULDERS From the youngest climbers in their sandpits to city dwellers who love climbing, boulders and climbing towers for parks and playgrounds meet the needs of all types of climbers. These resin structures are perfectly adapted to the outdoors, making climbing accessible to all and offering a variety of climbing styles.

VERTICAL CLIMBING WITH AUTO-BELAY Younger children can also go climbing. Our solution for more peace of mind and security ? A small wall equipped with Trublue™ auto-belay. Children wear a harness clipped to the Trublue™. They climb the wall on their own and when they reach the top or let go on the way up, the autobelay device lowers them smoothly back to the ground.

SECONDARY SCHOOLS & COLLEGES At a time when young people tend to spend more time in front of screens than outside or to practice sports activities, teaching climbing is a solution to encourage them to move in a playful way. The practice of indoor climbing on traverses, or top rope walls can be brought in a very attractive way, with fun, colourful and original wall designs. Holds on the walls are also colourful and varied in size. Teaching climbing to a young audience will be effective for the development of motor skills, will help them to stay focused on a goal. It is also an opportunity for children to start working in teams, to support and encourage each other.

BOULDERING WALLS Bouldering is a form of rock climbing, performed without any rope or harness. The climber solves a route, called a “problem”, on a wall no higher than 4.5m above the safety surface. The climber performs precise sequences of powerful moves to solve the problem. Thick mats protect climbers from falling and are essential for the safety of the climber. Bouldering is great for all skill levels and can be done alone even if it’s usually done as part of a social group. Adding an easier section to the bouldering area makes it accessible to students of all ages (primary to secondary schools). Bouldering walls are a great option if you don’t have enough height to install a sport climbing wall.

TOP ROPE Top rope: Climbers are supported by a rope, either by a second belayer or by using a TRUBLUE™ automatic belay. The advantage of being belayed by a second person is trust. Indeed, knowing that a partner is holding the rope allows the climber to get more confortable with the fall and to rest in his harness if he gets too tired. This is an excellent option for beginner climbers or for advanced climbers who want to practice difficult moves and exceed their skills. Also recommended for advanced climbers and for assessments. It is also an excellent way to progress in climbing

SPEED CLIMBING Speed climbing is a form of indoor climbing where athletes compete to achieve the best time to the top of the climbing wall. The competition takes place on a standardised climbing wall, (the holds are always the same, the route as well.) The wall is 15m high. Some athletes train specifically for this discipline. Speed climbing is an excellent discipline for competition, often spectacular, the spectators are not disappointed.

TOP ROPE/LEAD CLIMBING WALLS Top rope: Climbers are supported by a rope, either by a second belayer or by using a TRUBLUE™ automatic belay. Lead climbing is an advanced climbing style. The climber on the rock /wall has a rope attached to his harness. The other end of the rope is managed by the belayer. During the ascent, the climber passes the rope through the carabiners of the quickdraws that are permanently placed on the wall. At the top of the wall, the climber must hang the rope in a belay. Lead climbing can be done on a rope climbing wall. Also recommended for advanced climbers and assessments. It is also an excellent way to progress in climbing. Recommended for secondary schools, colleges and universities.

SERVICES INSPECTION & MAINTENANCE A climbing wall is subject to standards (NF EN 12572 and NF S 52-400). In order to remain in compliance and to ensure the security of its users, it is recommended to carry out annual maintenance and to keep a security register up to date. EP has its own team of maintenance technicians and can be your partner to ensure that your wall will last over time.

ROUTE SETTING ROUTE QUALITY IS THE MAIN FEATURE THAT CONTRIBUTES TO THE APPEAL OF YOUR CLIMBING STRUCTURE. It is essential to offer routes that match your users’ expectations. EP Climbing team of route setters can both set your routes or bouldering routes and train your team in route setting. We can help you optimise the appeal of your climbing structure. Routes for all: > calculations for all levels (beginners to experts) > thematic routes including route identification, speed, resistance, etc. > route setting for specific events such as certification and competition.

14

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) INSPECTION Users must inspect PPE regularly. A visual and tactile inspection must be carried out before and after each use by competent people. A complete inspection must be carried out at least once a year by an accredited PPE inspector. Such an inspection may also be necessary in the event of intensive use or a serious fall, for example. This inspection applies to all PPE, whether in use or in storage. The inspection must be recorded in the security register. Trained in PPE equipment inspection, our team can monitor wear on your equipment and compliance with current standards. If necessary, we can also create or update your PPE register and inspection reports.

Does an EP Climbing maintenance service replace a contract with a control office? Yes, EP Climbing has a certified and trained service. Our teams audit and repair directly on site without the need for a second visit.
