LOS ANGELES - Walt Disney Co will send “Star Wars” characters into the realm of augmented reality next week to draw fans into stores as they release new merchandise tied to upcoming movie the “The Last Jedi,” the company said in a statement on Thursday. Starting at 12:01 a.m. PDT (0701 GMT) on Sept. 1, more than 20,000 retail locations in 30 countries will feature displays that fans can scan with their smartphones to reveal characters such as Rey or Chewbacca. Using augmented reality technology, users will see the characters overlaid on their surroundings by looking through their phone’s cameras, and can take photos or videos with them. Disney is tapping into the trend of augmented reality, or AR, which first gained mass adoption in July 2016 with the release of Niantic Inc’s Pokemon Go game. The hunt for “Star Wars” characters is scheduled to last three days and will coincide with “Force Friday II,” when retailers start selling toys and other products tied to “The Last Jedi.”
Retailers include Wal-Mart Stores Inc, Target Inc , and Best Buy Co Inc stores. “Last Jedi” merchandise will also be sold online, and the AR characters will be accessible via some websites. Apple Inc stores will sell new app-enabled “Star Wars” toys made by third parties but will not take part in the augmented reality hunt. Apple stores will hold other “Star Wars” events during the “Force Friday II” weekend. “Star Wars,” one of Disney’s most important franchises, was the U.S. toy industry’s top-selling property for 2015 and 2016, with $1.5 billion in sales over the two years, according to research firm NPD. “The Last Jedi,” the eighth movie in the “Star Wars” film saga, arrives in theaters in December. LAS VEGAS - A ruthless Floyd Mayweather scored a 10th round technical knockout over mixed martial arts champion Conor McGregor on Saturday, the American cementing his legacy as an all-time boxing great with his 50th win in as many fights. Mayweather, who had guaranteed an early finish to the 12 round contest, made good on his promise when he pinned a brave-but-limited McGregor on the ropes and mercilessly hammered the Irishman before referee Robert Byrd stepped in to halt the bout. The fight, which Mayweather insisted would be his last, sends the 40year-old into his second retirement with a unblemished 50-0 record to surpass heavyweight legend Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 mark for most wins without a loss or draw. “This was my last fight tonight. For sure,” Mayweather declared in the ring. “Tonight was my last fight. Tonight I chose the right dance partner to dance with. “Conor you are a hell of a champion. “A win is a win, no matter how you get it. Rocky Marciano is a legend and I look forward to going into the Hall
of Fame one day.” Whether the fight will be the richest of all-time as promoters had predicted will be decided later when pay-per-view numbers come in, but it certainly will not be included on any list of the great bouts in boxing. MANGUPURA —Ahead of the implementation of the International Monetary Fund-World Bank (IMF-WB) Annual Meeting 2018 falling in October, a number of infrastructures are quickly restored. They include the airport underpass project, Tanjung Benoa cruise terminal, waste handling at Suwung landfill et cetera. “The improvement of our infrastructure is not solely worked on due to the annual meeting. We are indeed utilizing the annual meeting to also benefit the people of Indonesia,” said Luhut B. Panjaitan, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs serving
as Chairman of the Committee in the event. He asserted the infrastructure built is to accelerate the process. The project should have been completed in 2019, but accelerated to 2018. Thus, the existing tourism-supporting infrastructure can be accomplished. For example, completion of the underpass near the airport is targeted to be completed in August 2018. “We are also accelerating the settlement of problem taking place for 17 years namely the Tanjung Benoa cruise terminal. This one has been made sure that it will be completed next year
and has been starting to require deepening the port groove. So, the cruise can get there and it will be the best possible hub terminal cruise in ASEAN,” he said at the launch of the IMF-WB 2018 website on Friday (Aug. 25) at the BNDCC, Nusa Dua. Another 17-year unfinished project is the Suwung landfill. “We have already started doing next month. The process will be immediately decided,” he added. So, the expenditure of IDR 868 billion allocated can give added value to the people of Indonesia. Of the IDR 868 billion, only IDR 555 billion will be used. As
much as IDR 234 billion will be spent to rent hotel accommodation and so forth while delegates will pay their own expenses on hotel accommodation. From the event, the profit obtained is predicted to reach USD 100 million. However, there are still many unseen advantages to Indonesia such as driving the economy at tourist destinations and some 60 tour packages will be offered as well. Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani, added that the fund originates from the state budget 2017. The total budget is allocated for the purchase of local products. All rooms in the BNDCC will be
converted into offices during the IMF-WB annual meeting including computer peripherals. After the event, the device will be donated to schools. Food to art performances will be given by Indonesian artists. The budget worth IDR 650 billion will be allocated for infrastructural improvement and cultural event. Governor of Bank Indonesia, Agus Martowardojo, said the IMFWB annual meeting is the largest financial meeting in the world. After hit by crisis, Indonesia could successfully rise 20 years later. London gears up for Notting Hill carnival, in shadow of Grenfell Tower
LONDON - It is one of London’s most colourful and noisy events - a weekend carnival to celebrate Afro-Caribbean culture in what has become Europe’s biggest street festival. But this year, the processions at Notting Hill carnival will fall silent when the floats, dancers and singers pass Grenfell Tower, charred after a fire killed at least 80 people in what has become a symbol of the stark divide between rich and poor. The tower stands less that half a mile from the route of the procession and the local community is determined to remember the victims at the two-day carnival, starting on Sunday. But as well as sadness there is anger directed at the local authorities and the government after fire raced through the block and trapped dozens living in its upper floors in June. Some fear that tempers could boil over at the festival, but the local community is determined it should be a peaceful vigil. “I am pleased it’s going ahead. Carnival is this community and
this community is carnival,” said Zoe LeVack, a youth worker and co-founder of Kids on the Green, which provided activities and mental health support in the aftermath of the fire. “Grenfell is an outrage ... and the community is very angry. So if anything, the carnival going ahead is a celebration of the people whose lives have been lost, but it’s also making a stand,” she told Reuters. The carnival will see its usual mix of eclectic costumes, decorated floats and exuberant dancers, but it will fall silent for a minute on both days. Visitors have been told to avoid taking shortcuts across the
estate where the tower stands. “Kids on the Green” are using a samba float for their tribute to Grenfell’s victims, while revellers at the carnival have been encouraged to wear an item of green clothing in memory of the victims of the fire. COMMUNITY SUPPORT The blaze prompted widespread support for the community, but also anger over accusations of mismanagement by the local authorities. Protesters stormed the council building in the days after the tragedy, and the borough council leader resigned.
The council was criticised by locals and politicians for its slow and ineffective response to the fire, while many accuse the authority, which administers one of Britain’s wealthiest areas, of having turned its back on social housing. Earlier this week, Prime Minister Theresa May said she had a “dignified and very respectful” meeting with residents of Grenfell Tower. But mistrust of authority remains, and is being intensified by a police crackdown on knife and drug crime. BEING a farmer must be creative. Farmers that only run regular activities will never get advancement. This has been experienced by Ida Wayan Oka, one of the agricultural practitioners in Karangasem. Since the past few years, he has been diligently searching for unused or dormant lands. It is not used to make a plot, but to develop prominent agricultural products. They include chili, onion, wheat, tomatoes and other products needed in Bali. What are the activities of this man who is also the Chairman of the Karangasem Agribusiness Association? From the beginning, he claimed to be moved to take advantage of marginal lands in Karangasem. In addition to being utilized, it is also an effort to develop agriculture in Karangasem. By involving farming groups, he cultivates several products becoming daily necessities such as chili. For example, at the hamlet of Gunaksa, Ababi, he initially tried to develop chili on one hectare of land. After running a few months, apparently the results are pretty good. Due to vivacity of local farmer groups, now the location of chili cultivation around the location has reached 11.2 hectares. Since the land and the environment are suitable, his agricultural product is made sustainable. It is meant to keep product availability in the market. To make the products sustainable, this farmer figure of Budakeling plants new seeds in the area of two hectares. He does no longer need to purchase seeds to be planted, but prepares alone. “We arrange the planting of seeds in an area of two hectares per month, so that the production is not interrupted,” said Ida Wayan Oka, when met in Amlapura on Wednesday (Aug. 23). He said the smooth development of agricultural products is inseparable from the assistance provided by Bank Indonesia (BI). The assistance starts from soil cultivation, seed availability, use of vegetable pesticides to appropriate market discovery so the price fluctuation is not high enough for every harvest. BI also teaches not to use chemical-based fertilizers in the development of agricultural products, but the results remain maximal. In essence, according to Ida Wayan Oka, farming is not difficult. Most importantly, there should be a will and never force products on inappropriate land. With tenacity of farming, according to Ida Wayan Oka, other products are actually very easy to develop in Karangasem. For example, onion is very potential to be developed in the area of Jungutan, ranging from the Pura, Bukit Cemara and Nangka hamlet to the eastern area of Abang. According to him, they are very potential. If the land is utilized, you can imagine how big the production will be. Wheat is also suitable to be developed there. “Like at Batur, it is very suitable to cultivate onion,” he said. His agricultural products have also been developed into several processed products. For example, his chilies have been processed into chili sauce. To make more durable, do not use preservatives but reduce the pH--for example, from 4 to 3.5. The result of the processed product could last six months. Other than red peppers, green chilies can also be processed into chili sauce. This has been successfully done and absorbed by the market well through the efforts of BI by bringing together the farmers and buyers. Aside from condiment, tomato products can also processed into syrup. The market is waiting for Bali’s agricultural products. If the product already exists, they will be very quickly channeled into the market. AMLAPURA — Karangasem demands for alignment of the tinkling of dollars from the rapid development of tourism in Bali. Although Bali tourist visit is very high, in fact Karangasem cannot do anything. Karangasem can only get the dregs of the Bali tourism development. This was criticism of Chairman of the Ujung Water Palace Management, Ida Made Alit, when attending the coordination meeting on the development of rural and urban destination by central government in Karangasem on Tuesday (Aug. 22). According to him, the objects and famous tourist attraction in Bali are mostly located in Karangasem, such as Besakih Temple, Tirtagangga, Ujung Water Palace, Tulamben, Amed, Candidasa, Tenganan and many others. Moreover, they have now developed into 57 objects and tourist attractions. With so many choices of objects, such as heritage, cultural attractions, agro-tourism and others, the tourist visits to Karangasem are considered to have increased. However, all this time according to Ida Made Alit, tourists never stay in Karangasem. “When making a visit to Bali, tourists travel to Karangasem but stay in Badung, Denpasar or Gianyar. They are our potential, but the other regions earn the dollars. What should we do to resolve this situation?” asked Ida Made Alit. Actually this issue has been realized for a long time. But,
until now there is no appropriate solution to overcome them. Currently, Karangasem is actively building tourism in order to replace the quarrying activities posing the largest contributor to the regionally generated revenue (PAD) in Karangasem. Moreover, Karangasem dares to target the visit of 1 million tourists per year. Although the support of tourist accommodation is quite good, Karangasem still cannot ‘force’ tourists to stay in Karangasem. Culture agency highlighted that tourism development should maximize its contribution to the PAD. In essence, all the technologies used today have been designed to be safe for the environment. “Keep in mind that all the technologies today has been designed to catch harmful substances so it is safe for the environment,” he added. able energy certainly ca not compete against electrical energy from fossil or diesel fuel. Surely, electrical energy from waste will be much more expensive than the existing energies. In addition, the calorific value of the waste is also much lower by 50 percent. “Of course we cannot compete against the energy of fossils, gas or diesel fuel that are definitely cheaper because of getting subsidies. Storm Pakhar hits Hong Kong and Macau days after deadly Hato
HONG KONG - Tropical storm Pakhar brought strong winds and heavy rain to Hong Kong and Macau on Sunday, just four days after one of the strongest typhoons on record, Hato, caused serious flooding and damage in the territories and killed at least 10 people in the gaming hub. The two cities lowered their typhoon signal to No.3 in the early afternoon, after Pakhar brushed passed and landed in the southern Chinese city of Taishan in the morning. Both cities issued their thirdhighest weather warnings, storm signal No. 8, early in the day as winds intensified and heavy rain lashed down, churning up rough seas and prompting alerts of flooding in low-lying areas. No serious damage has been observed in Hong Kong so far. The government said it has received 13 reports of flooding and 159 reports of fallen trees. Hong Kong’s weather observatory said in the early hours that winds occasionally reached storm force in the southern part of the territory and hurricane force on high ground on Lantau Island to the west of the city where the airport is situated. Pakhar’s arrival comes as the cities are still reeling from Hato. While Hong Kong escaped major damage, Hato devastated Macau, the world’s largest gambling hub,
killing at least 10 people, injuring 244 and exposing critical infrastructure flaws after it left the city without water and power for days. The maximum sustained winds recorded at Cheung Chau and Chek Lap Kok were 114 and 76 kilometers per hour (71 and 47 miles per hour), respectively, in the morning, with maximum gusts at 136 and 101 kmh. China’s Meteorological Administration maintained its yellow typhoon warning, the third-highest of four levels, as of midday Sunday and said torrential rains are expected in several southern provinces through Monday afternoon. Airport Authority Hong Kong reported 300 flights have been cancelled or delayed, and around 30 diverted to other places by noon. Hong Kong’s flagship carrier, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd , said the storm would cause delays and cancellations to flights arriving and departing on Sunday and Monday. Some ferries to Macau and outlying islands in Hong Kong resumed service after the typhoon

In Macau, the storm will pose a major setback to clean-up efforts that saw Chinese People’s Liberation Army troops deployed to help remove mountains of stinking debris strewn across some heavily flooded districts battered by Hato. BERLIN - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she has no regrets about her 2015 decision to open the country’s borders to hundreds of thousands of refugees and added she will not be deterred from campaigning by angry hecklers. In an interview with the Welt am Sonntag newspaper on Sunday, Merkel denied she had made any mistakes with her open-door policy even though the arrival of a million refugees over the last two years from Syria and Iraq opened deep rifts in her conservative party and depressed its support. Four weeks before the Sept. 24 election, an Emnid opinion poll on Sunday showed Merkel’s conservatives would win 38 percent, or 15 points ahead of the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD). That is up from 32 percent in February but well below the 41.5 percent her party won in the last election in 2013. “I’d make all the important decisions of 2015 the same way again,” Merkel said. “It was an extraordinary situation and I made my decision based on what I thought was right from a political and humanitarian standpoint. “Those kinds of extraordinary situations happen every once in a while in a country’s history,” she added. “The head of government has to act and I did.” Her decision to open the borders

UK opposition Labour backs soft Brexit, putting pressure on May
LONDON - The opposition Labour Party says it would keep Britain in the European single market and customs union for a transitional period after Brexit, offering a clear alternative to the policies of Prime Minister Theresa May. The centreleft party would seek to maintain the “same basic terms” with the European Union, including the free movement of people, beyond March 2019 when Britain is set to leave the bloc, Labour’s Brexit spokesman Keir Starmer said on Sunday. Labour wanted to avoid a damaging “cliff edge” for the economy from an abrupt separation in less than two years. It would also aim to keep a form of customs union with the EU, and would possibly agree a new relationship with the single market, subject to negotiations, Starmer added in the Observer newspaper. Senior ministers in May’s Conservative government have ruled out remaining in the single market and customs union during any transitional phase following Brexit. Starmer said following EU rules for a period would allow goods and services to continue to flow between the EU and Britain without tariffs, customs checks or additional red tape. Starmer’s comments follow months of uncertainty and division on Labour’s position, and are aimed at providing a springboard for party leader Jeremy Corbyn to potentially defeat the Conservatives in any new election. BRASILIA - Brazil’s Supreme Court justice on Friday opened a corruption investigation into the nation’s agriculture minister, Blairo Maggi, who is accused of leading a graft scheme when he served as governor of Mato Grosso state from 2003 to 2010. In a separate development in a deepening corruption scandal, the country’s top prosecutor filed charges against four senators of the ruling Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB) and its former president José Sarney. Justice Luiz Fux approved the investigation request made by Prosecutor General Rodrigo Janot, who alleges that Maggi, a billionaire who made his fortune as Brazil’s largest soy farmer, arranged for state lawmakers to be paid off to support his political agenda when he was governor. Janot’s allegations are based on pleabargain testimony made by Silval Barbosa, who served as Maggi’s vice governor from 2007 to 2010. Among the accusations, he alleged Maggi instructed his deputy to pay his campaign debts with public funds. Maggi denied the accusations in a statement and said he was confident that the investigation would prove his innocence. “I reject the allegation that I led or organized criminal activities in Mato Grosso. I have never used illegal means in my public life or in my companies,” Maggi said. With agricultural exports the bright light in Brazil’s slumped economy, Maggi is a key minister in President Michel Temer’s government, which has been weakened by accusations that forced out ministers and even reached the president. The lower house of Congress blocked a corruption charge against Temer earlier this month, saving him from trial by the Supreme Court. Janot charged the government leader in Senate, Romero Jucá, three other PMDB senators, Renan Calheiros, Garibaldi Alves and Valdir Raupp, plus former president Sarney with corruption and money laundering in a graft case involving Transpetro, the logistics unit of state-run oil company Petrobras. They received “undue advantages” disguised as donations negotiated with private companies through Transpetro, Janot alleged, based on the plea bargain statement of former Transpetro president Sergio Machado. Apart from office buildings another heritage left from the Dutch colonial period is the art of Janger that was a popular form of entertainment in Buleleng during the occupation. The Janger from Menyali village, Sawan that emerged during the colonial period has been reconstructed by the Janger Saraswati Art Troupe and was recently performed in the former Buleleng Harbour. The District of Buleleng will be presenting the Janger Menyali during the 39th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) in June at the Denpasar Art Center, evoking the heyday of this art form. The Janger Menyali performance in Buleleng Harbour was especially interesting because it was performed by elderly dancers who had not performed the Janger since the 1960’s and 70’s. The dancers looking dapper in their attire of red berets, badges, shirts, socks and shoes, This costume, he said is different than the one usually worn by more contemporary Janger dances. Headman of Menyali, Made Jaya Harta, explained that male Janger dancers used to be known as jipak. Jipak Janger dancers from his village indeed used to
be wear costumes inspired by the Dutch Army that was docked at Buleleng Customs (former Buleleng Harbor—Ed). Over time, the style and costume of Janger Menyali changed under the influenced of other arts including “Janger Kreasi”. “The songs and dance movements are similar but the costumes for “Janger Kresi” are quite different. Janger Menyali is rarely ever performed anymore and was on the verge of disappearing all together before this reconstruction was put together. There was one staging of this dance not too long ago in Lom-
bok”, said Headman Harta. The reconstruction of Janger Menyali started in Febuary 2017. It was considered to be important to revive this dance as it is believed to be a sacred dance (sanghyang dance). Harta and others are therefor committed to preserving the Janger Menyali dance. “We have to preserve this ancestral heritage from the Dutch era. We started to reconstruct this dance by teaming up with the old dancers and then got some younger dancers involved. The result is a dance that can make Buleleng proud” explained Harta. (kmb)
The Tangkup waterfall attraction located at Undisan Kelod hamlet, Undisan, Tembuku, Bangli, has yet to be known to many people as it has only been operating as a tourist attraction for about a year and a half. Since it opened to the public, both local and foreign tourists have been coming to enjoy the crystal clear waterfall and to do purification rites. To find the waterfall that is located behind the steep rock cliff, visitors must use a motorcycle to travel two kilometers along a narrow road to reach the falls from the main road. It is not accessible by car. On motorcycle or mountain bike it takes about 15 minutes, and on foot it takesa botu 40 minutes from the main road. Attendant of Tangkup waterfall, I Made Sunarta, accompanied by colleague, I Wayan Gentos, said on Saturday (May 13) that the waterfall that has only been open to the public for a year and a half, continues to be promoted and have improvements made to it so that people will keep coming in the future. “This tourist attraction officially opened to the public on August 17, 2015”, said Sunarta. Sunarta added that there has been a gradual increase in the number of both local and foregin visitors who have come to enjoy the waterfalls and steep cliff, since it opened. “On average there are about 6-8 visitors per day and at least on visitor per day but on religious holidays like Galungan and Kuningan there can be hundreds of visitors a day” said Sunarta adding that the entrance fee is IDR 5,000 for locals and IDR 10,000 for foreigners. The water fall is fed by five separate springs: the Kibul, Besi, Belatuk, purificatory site of Bathara Pucak Sari and the Getar spring. Originally the waterfall was Belegiding Tangkup waterfall but they decided to shorten it to Tangkup waterfall to make it easier to remember. “So, word belegiding in Balinese means ‘high and slippery cliff’ ”, he said. Sunarta also explained that this tourist attraction is managed by the local ‘tourism awareness group” (Porkdawis). Before that the waterfall attraction had been managed by the Undisan Kelod customary youth club. Because so many local youths have left the village for either work or further education, the management of the waterfall was taken over by the Pordawis. The funds generated from the entrance tickets, are used to construct supporting structures such as a guard post, toilets and changing rooms fro visitors who come to melukat (purification rite). As of yet, the changing room is still quite rudimentary, but Sunarta explained that once they have enough funds, they will make further improvements, including creating a concrete guard post, instead of the bamboo one that stands there now. He added that he hopes to have government assistance for enlarging the road to the waterfall so that cars will be able to pass through it. “Hopefully, the government will be able to provide assistance so that the road can be widened. With access to cars, there will be more visitors. Many people complain that the road is too narrow” concluded Sunarta. (kmb)

They could process such traditional ingredients into delicious cuisine and was presented in modern menu. Other than unique presentation, the menu created by these chefs also has a distinctive taste.
In the contest, Arya Nata made menu Muscovy duck spring roll with spicy sauce (appetizer), Muscovy duck twisted satay, timbung rice, uyang-aying spice, bamboo shoot vegetable and gooseweed with spicy sauce (main course) and banana roll dumplings (dessert). The chefs were able to mix and serve delicious and nutritious menu that can be enjoyed by local people and foreign tourists. ment, typicality from the mountain area of Pujungan and timbungan rice (rice cooked in bamboo log) used red rice from Jatiluwih. “Tabah bamboo in use is one of the native species to Tabanan district precisely originating from the Pupuan subdistrict,” he explained. Creativity of Chef Arya Nata in the cooking contest at the Tanah Lot Kreatifood Festival 2017 has proved that traditional food such as tabah bamboo shoot, gondo (gooseweed), Muscovy duck and red rice are not inferior to ingredients from outside the island, even from imported ingredients. “The
result is very good, tasty and has a uniqueness that can make Tabanan and Bali worthy of culinary tourism,” he added. Chef Arya Nata and Yadnya then agreed to popularize the local culinary treasure with modern preparation. It is expected to support the tourism as well as have direct relation to the system of life and economy of local communities. “There are still many Balinese dishes that can be further developed to become menus with modern nuances. After decades of war, Colombia’s FARC rebels to debut political party BOGOTA - Colombia’s leftist FARC rebel group will debut its political party at a conference beginning on Sunday, a key step in its transition into a civilian organization after more than 50 years of war and its first chance to announce policy to skeptical voters. The six-day meeting in Bogota of FARC members, who have handed in more than 8,000 weapons to the United Nations during their demobilization, is expected to conclude Friday with a platform that the party, still officially un-named, will campaign on in elections next year. Under its 2016 peace deal with the government to end its part in a war that killed more than 220,000, the majority of Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) fighters were granted amnesty and allowed to participate in politics. Whether Colombians, many of whom revile the rebels, will be inspired to back them remains to be seen. The FARC’s often-old fashioned Marxist rhetoric strikes many as a throwback to their 1964 founding, but proposals for reforms to labyrinthine property laws may get traction with rural voters who struggle as subsistence farmers. The peace accord, rejected by less than a 1 percent margin in a referendum before being modified and enacted, awards the FARC’s party 10 automatic seats in Congress through 2026, but the group may campaign for others. “I think the FARC will try for a regional consolidation, using the presence and influence they have in certain provinces,” said Catalina Jimenez, politics professor at Externado University. “At a national level they need a large amount of votes they still don’t have.” The FARC is open to coalitions, the group said this week. Fractured by in-fighting, leftist parties have long struggled in conservative-leaning Colombia, despite some success in winning urban positions. “We have to define our course of action, which will surely bring up the need to have coalitions,” FARC secretariat member Pastor Alape told reporters on Friday, adding the group wants a “big political convergence that redefines the limits of the left.” Colombia’s “semi-feudal” state will need to be modernized, and the country must wake up to the scourge of corruption, Alape said. Both legislative and presidential elections will take place in 2018. It is not yet clear for which positions the FARC will field candidates. Widespread corruption scandals will likely be a top issue for the crowded field of 2018 presidential candidates, as will bettering the daily lives of Colombians, many of whom say improvements to security, public education and healthcare are desperately needed. The FARC says the government of President Juan Manuel Santos, which gives a certain amount of regulated funding to each party, should help carry the costs of the conference, given the rebels have handed over their assets to be used as reparations for victims of the war. Harvey claims second fatality as floodwaters rise in Texas
ROCKPORT - Rescue crews raced against rising floodwaters early on Sunday to pull hundreds of stranded residents from their homes and cars in southeast Texas as Harvey, the most powerful storm to hit the state in more than 50 years, roared inland. The storm has killed at least two people and Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said on Twitter early on Sunday the death toll could rise, with his deputies responding to reports of a deceased woman and child inside a submerged vehicle on Interstate 10 near Houston. Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport shut down its airfield early on Sunday due to standing water on the runway, canceling all inbound and outbound flights. The arrivals section of the airport was also closed as waters rose. The second confirmed fatality from Tropical Storm Harvey came on Saturday evening as an elderly woman attempted to drive through flooded streets on Houston’s west side, said Sergeant Colin Howard of the Houston police department. “It appeared that her vehicle went into high water and she drowned as a result,” he said. The victim was not immediately identified. Authorities have urged residents to stay off the streets of
Houston and other southeast Texas cities as rain falling at up to 5 inches per hour flooded roads and major intersections. On Friday night, a man died in a house fire in the town of Rockport, 30 miles (48 km) north of Corpus Christi. Another dozen people in the area suffered injuries such as broken bones, another official said. The Harris County Joint Information center said first responders were conducting hundreds of rescues early on Sunday morning as calls came in across the county. Gonzalez’ Twitter feed was inundated by residents asking for help and the sheriff could only tell some of them that crews were doing the best they can. “All agencies care but everyone simply operating at maximum capacity,” he tweeted at one point. Harvey slammed into Texas late Friday as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 130 miles per hour (209 km per hour), making it the strongest storm to hit the state since 1961.
It has since lingered over Houston, dumping amounts of rain that threaten to break the record established nearly 40 years ago when Alvin, Texas, was deluged by 43 inches of rain in 24 hours from July 24-25, 1979. The storm ripped off roofs, snapped trees, triggered tornadoes and flash floods and cut off power to nearly 230,000 people, mostly in the Houston area, on Saturday night. Houston police officials said officers were evacuating two flooded apartment complexes. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency alert for the area around William P. Hobby Airport, and the airport said on Twitter that the arrivals section was flooded. Oil and gas production was largely halted in the state, prompting price hikes at the pumps. “There are a number of stranded people on our streets, calling 911, exhausting needed resources. JAKARTA - Indonesian authorities have uncovered a group spreading hate speech and fake news online, one of many that they fear could undermine national unity. Indonesia has an ethnically diverse population of 250 million people, most of them Muslim but with significant minorities from other religions, and unity across the archipelago has been a priority of governments for generations. Three people were arrested this week on suspicion of being part of a syndicate being paid to spread incendiary material online through social media, police said. “If this is allowed to continue, it isn’t just about violating the law but also has the potential to damage the unity of this country,” said presidential spokesman Johan Budi. Budi said it was up to investigators to determine the motive of those behind the campaign, adding police should investigate the issue “right down to its roots”. National police spokesman Awi Setiyono said the material involved religious and ethnic issues and posts defamatory to government officials. He declined to comment on the motive, saying investigators were still building their case and had yet to identify who was behind the syndicate, which calls itself Saracen, that has been spreading the material. The police cyber crime unit said dozens of Facebook and other social media accounts were being sued to spread the material to an estimated 800,000 social media accounts. Setiyono said investigators had uncovered money transfers of up to $5,000 to pay those spreading the material. Religious and ethnic tensions flared in the capital, Jakarta, this year when city elections pitted an ethnic Chinese Christian governor, who was accused on insulting Islam, against a Muslim candidate. Indonesian militants planned “dirty bomb” attack: sources Indonesian Anti Terror Squad
JAKARTA - Indonesian militants planned to detonate a radioactive dirty bomb, security sources said, highlighting the rising ambitions of extremists to wreak destruction in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation. But experts cast doubt on their expertise, equipment and chances of success. The plot was foiled when police raided homes and arrested five suspects in Bandung, West Java, last week, the sources with direct knowledge of the plot said. After the raids, police spoke of a plan to explode a “chemical” bomb but provided no other details. The plot comes as Indonesia grapples with an influx of militants deported from other countries and the fallout from the Islamic State-led siege in the southern Philippines city of Marawi that regional leaders and analysts worry has energised militants across Southeast Asia The three counter-terrorism sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the militants had hoped to transform low-grade radioactive Thorium 232 (Th-232) into deadly Uranium 233 (U-233). The highly radioactive uranium would be combined with the powerful home-made explosive triacetone triperoxide (TATP) to create a “nuclear bomb”, according to an instruction manual used by the militants and reviewed by Reuters. In fact, the device would be, at best, a radiological dispersal device or dirty bomb that could spray radioactive material when the conventional bomb exploded. A spokesman for Indonesia’s national police, Inspector General Setyo Wasisto, declined to confirm or deny the plot to construct the device, but said it would have been more potent than the two bombs made from TATP that killed three police in
Indonesia’s capital Jakarta in May. “If this bomb was finished, it would have had a more destructive impact than the bomb made from ‘Mother of Satan’,” he said, using the nickname for TATP. “It could burn anything and make it hard for people to breathe.” Thorium-232 can be transformed into Uranium-233 but requires the Thorium to absorb a neutron, a process that needs powerful irradiation, generally from a nuclear reactor, according to three analysts contacted by Reuters and the website of the World Nuclear Association, which represents reactor vendors and nuclear engineers, among other industry stakeholders. The militants’ manual advised an X-Ray machine or microwave be used instead. “X rays would not have enough punch to overcome the binding energy of the Thorium atoms,” said Peter Hayes, an expert in radiological devices from the Nautilus Institute, in an email. “And, no, you can’t cook Th-232 to make U-233 in a microwave and, if you could, you would have a painful and rapid death from the radioactive nature of the copresent U-232 produced alongside U-233.”
One senior Indonesian counterterrorism source said the Bandungbased cell had bought a large amount of a household item and had begun to extract the Thorium. Reuters has chosen not to name the item. “They needed three weeks. It was still only one week (into the process when police raided),” the source said. “A MUSLIM’S DUTY” Indonesia has suffered a series of mostly small attacks by extremists over the past 18 months, although police have disrupted many more. Indonesian terrorism analyst Rakyan Adibrata fears militants have been inspired by the events in Marawi, where IS fighters continue to occupy part of the city despite a three-month offensive by Philippines force to re-take it. “They don’t have the ability to occupy a city like has happened in Marawi, but they want to do something big that pleases their bosses in Islamic State,” said Adibrata. A radiological bombing could fit the bill, although Adibrata said that it was highly unlikely that the Bandung cell had either “the equipment or the knowledge” to succeed. members of Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), a pro-IS alliance of Indonesian militants. Many have been directed from Syria by an Indonesian national and JAD leader Bahrun Naim, according to police. Naim is identified as the author on the front page of the 47-page Indonesian-language bomb instruction manual - named “Nuclear for Dummy” (sic) - and posted on a blog that has since been taken down. “Mastering weaponry is essentially every Muslim’s duty,” it says. “This paper, we hope, also can motivate the Muslim mujahideen to learn nuclear science easily and apply it.” Last week, police said the militants had been working off Naim’s manual, but did not disclose its contents. According to police, the suspected Bandung plotters were members of JAD and were considering targets like the presidential palace in Jakarta and police headquarters in Bandung and the capital. Two of the five suspects are Indonesian migrant workers deported from Singapore and Hong Kong this year for posting radical Islamist material on social media. They spent a month or less in a deradicalisation shelter before joining up with the other militants, sources told Reuters. About 177 Indonesian militants have been deported from other countries this year, according to Adibrata, citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.(ant)

MILAN - Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon said referees were overusing the VAR system after it helped award a penalty against the Italian champions for a second successive game on Saturday. Serie A is one of the leagues testing the use of VARs this season before soccer’s rulemaking body IFAB decides whether to allow its use on a permanent basis. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has said he wants to use VARs at next year’s World Cup in Russia. VARS were used to award penalties to Cagliari and Genoa against Juventus, although the Turin side went on to win both games. “They are overusing it and making mistakes,” Buffon said after Juve’s 4-2 win at Genoa on Saturday. “It’s something which, if used sparingly, could give us excellent results and be a good thing for football. But I don’t like it this way, it’s not good.” The 39-year-old said that too much technology could also devalue pitch officials. “In this way, we won’t know the real value of a referee; if everyone was a little calmer and more objective, and accepted mistakes, we would accept results with more humanity,” he said. “Another thing is that in football, it’s not a penalty every time there is contact....You can’t stop the game every three minutes - it makes it like water polo.” Saturday’s penalty was awarded for a foul by Daniele Rugani against Andrey Galabinov, although Juventus claimed the Bulgarian was offside at the time. Iran drop Shojaei from qualifiers after Israeli game Masoud Shojaei has been left out of coach Carlos Queiroz’s squad for Iran’s final World Cup qualifiers against South Korea and Syria after playing against an Israeli club. Shojaei and his Iran team mate Ehsan Hajsafi played for Greek side Panionios against Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv in a Europa League qualifier earlier this month, prompting Iran’s deputy sports minister to declare the pair were banned from the the national side. Iran does not recognise the state of Israel and bars its athletes from competing against participants from the country. Hajsafi, however, was included in the squad to play South Korea in Seoul on Aug. 31 and Syria at home on Sept. 5. Top of Group A in Asia, Iran have already qualified for next year’s finals in Russia. MILAN - Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon said referees were overusing the VAR system after it helped award a penalty against the Italian champions for a second successive game on Saturday. Serie A is one of the leagues testing the use of VARs this season before soccer’s rulemaking body IFAB decides whether to allow its use on a permanent basis. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has said he wants to use VARs at next year’s World Cup in Russia. VARS were used to award penalties to Cagliari and Genoa against Juventus, although the Turin side went on to win both games. “They are overusing it and making mistakes,” Buffon said after Juve’s 4-2 win at Genoa on Saturday. “It’s something which, if used sparingly, could give us excellent results and be a good thing for football. But I don’t like it this way, it’s not good.” The 39-year-old said that too much technology could also devalue pitch officials. “In this way, we won’t know the real value of a referee; if everyone was a little calmer and more objective, and accepted mistakes, we would accept results with more humanity,” he said. “Another thing is that in football, it’s not a penalty every time there is contact....You can’t stop the game every three minutes - it makes it like water polo.” Saturday’s penalty was awarded for a foul by Daniele Rugani against Andrey Galabinov, although Juventus claimed the Bulgarian was offside at the time. After decades of war, Colombia’s FARC rebels to debut political party BOGOTA - Colombia’s leftist FARC rebel group will debut its political party at a conference beginning on Sunday, a key step in its transition into a civilian organization after more than 50 years of war and its first chance to announce policy to skeptical voters. The six-day meeting in Bogota of FARC members, who have handed in more than 8,000 weapons to the United Nations during their demobilization, is expected to conclude Friday with a platform that the party, still officially un-named, will campaign on in elections next year. Under its 2016 peace deal with the government to end its part in a war that killed more than 220,000, the majority of Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) fighters were granted amnesty and allowed to participate in politics. Whether Colombians, many of whom revile the rebels, will be inspired to back them remains to be seen. The FARC’s often-old fashioned Marxist rhetoric strikes many as a throwback to their 1964 founding, but proposals for reforms to labyrinthine property laws may get traction with rural voters who struggle as subsistence farmers. The peace accord, rejected by less than a 1 percent margin in a referendum before being modified and enacted, awards the FARC’s party 10 automatic seats in Congress through 2026, but the group may campaign for others. “I think the FARC will try for a regional consolidation, using the presence and influence they have in certain provinces,” said Catalina Jimenez, politics professor at Externado University. “At a national level they need a large amount of votes they still don’t have.” The FARC is open to coalitions, the group said this week. Fractured by in-fighting, leftist parties have long struggled in conservative-leaning Colombia, despite some success in winning urban positions. “We have to define our course of action, which will surely bring up the need to have coalitions,” FARC secretariat member Pastor Alape told reporters on Friday, adding the group wants a “big political convergence that redefines the limits of the left.” Colombia’s “semi-feudal” state will need to be modernized, and the country must wake up to the scourge of corruption, Alape said. Both legislative and presidential elections will take place in 2018. It is not yet clear for which positions the FARC will field candidates. Widespread corruption scandals will likely be a top issue for the crowded field of 2018 presidential candidates, as will bettering the daily lives of Colombians, many of whom say improvements to security, public education and healthcare are desperately needed. The FARC says the government of President Juan Manuel Santos, which gives a certain amount of regulated funding to each party, should help carry the costs of the conference, given the rebels have handed over their assets to be used as reparations for victims of the war. Harvey claims second fatality as floodwaters rise in Texas
ROCKPORT - Rescue crews raced against rising floodwaters early on Sunday to pull hundreds of stranded residents from their homes and cars in southeast Texas as Harvey, the most powerful storm to hit the state in more than 50 years, roared inland. The storm has killed at least two people and Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said on Twitter early on Sunday the death toll could rise, with his deputies responding to reports of a deceased woman and child inside a submerged vehicle on Interstate 10 near Houston. Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport shut down its airfield early on Sunday due to standing water on the runway, canceling all inbound and outbound flights. The arrivals section of the airport was also closed as waters rose. The second confirmed fatality from Tropical Storm Harvey came on Saturday evening as an elderly woman attempted to drive through flooded streets on Houston’s west side, said Sergeant Colin Howard of the Houston police department. “It appeared that her vehicle went into high water and she drowned as a result,” he said. The victim was not immediately identified. Authorities have urged residents to stay off the streets of
Houston and other southeast Texas cities as rain falling at up to 5 inches per hour flooded roads and major intersections. JAKARTA - Indonesian authorities have uncovered a group spreading hate speech and fake news online, one of many that they fear could undermine national unity. Indonesia has an ethnically diverse population of 250 million people, most of them Muslim but with significant minorities from other religions, and unity across the archipelago has been a priority of governments for generations. Three people were arrested this week on suspicion of being part of a syndicate being paid to spread incendiary material online through social media, police said. “If this is allowed to continue, it isn’t just about violating the law but also has the potential to damage the unity of this country,” said presidential spokesman Johan Budi. Budi said it was up to investigators to determine the motive of those behind the campaign, adding police should investigate the issue “right down to its roots”. National police spokesman Awi Setiyono said the material involved religious and ethnic issues and posts defamatory to government officials. He declined to comment on the motive, saying investigators were still building their case and had yet to identify who was behind the syndicate, which calls itself Saracen, that has been spreading the material. The police cyber crime unit said dozens of Facebook and other social media accounts were being sued to spread the material to an estimated 800,000 social media accounts. Setiyono said investigators had uncovered money transfers of up to $5,000 to pay those spreading the material. Religious and ethnic tensions flared in the capital, Jakarta, this year when city elections pitted an ethnic Chinese Christian governor, who was accused on insulting Islam, against a Muslim candidate. Indonesian militants planned “dirty bomb” attack: sources Indonesian Anti Terror Squad
JAKARTA - Indonesian militants planned to detonate a radioactive dirty bomb, security sources said, highlighting the rising ambitions of extremists to wreak destruction in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation. But experts cast doubt on their expertise, equipment and chances of success. The plot was foiled when police raided homes and arrested five suspects in Bandung, West Java, last week, the sources with direct knowledge of the plot said. After the raids, police spoke of a plan to explode a “chemical” bomb but provided no other details. The plot comes as Indonesia grapples with an influx of militants deported from other countries and the fallout from the Islamic State-led siege in the southern Philippines city of Marawi that regional leaders and analysts worry has energised militants across Southeast Asia The three counter-terrorism sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the militants had hoped to transform low-grade radioactive Thorium 232 (Th-232) into deadly Uranium 233 (U-233). The highly radioactive uranium would be combined with the powerful home-made explosive triacetone triperoxide (TATP) to create a “nuclear bomb”, according to an instruction manual used by the militants and reviewed by Reuters. In fact, the device would be, at best, a radiological dispersal device or dirty bomb that could spray radioactive material when the conventional bomb exploded. A spokesman for Indonesia’s national police, Inspector General Setyo Wasisto, declined to confirm or deny the plot to construct the device, but said it would have been more potent than the two bombs made from TATP that killed three police in
Indonesia’s capital Jakarta in May. “If this bomb was finished, it would have had a more destructive impact than the bomb made from ‘Mother of Satan’,” he said, using the nickname for TATP. “It could burn anything and make it hard for people to breathe.” Thorium-232 can be transformed into Uranium-233 but requires the Thorium to absorb a neutron, a process that needs powerful irradiation, generally from a nuclear reactor, according to three analysts contacted by Reuters and the website of the World Nuclear Association, which represents reactor vendors and nuclear engineers, among other industry stakeholders. The militants’ manual advised an X-Ray machine or microwave be used instead. “X rays would not have enough punch to overcome the binding energy of the Thorium atoms,” said Peter Hayes, an expert in radiological devices from the Nautilus Institute, in an email. “And, no, you can’t cook Th-232 to make U-233 in a microwave and, if you could, you would have a painful and rapid death from the radioactive nature of the copresent U-232 produced alongside U-233.”
One senior Indonesian counterterrorism source said the Bandungbased cell had bought a large amount of a household item and had begun to extract the Thorium. Reuters has chosen not to name the item. “They needed three weeks. members of Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), a pro-IS alliance of Indonesian militants. Many have been directed from Syria by an Indonesian national and JAD leader Bahrun Naim, according to police. Naim is identified as the author on the front page of the 47-page Indonesian-language bomb instruction manual - named “Nuclear for Dummy” (sic) - and posted on a blog that has since been taken down. “Mastering weaponry is essentially every Muslim’s duty,” it says. “This paper, we hope, also can motivate the Muslim mujahideen to learn nuclear science easily and apply it.” Last week, police said the militants had been working off Naim’s manual, but did not disclose its contents. According to police, the suspected Bandung plotters were members of JAD and were considering targets like the presidential palace in Jakarta and police headquarters in Bandung and the capital. Two of the five suspects are Indonesian migrant workers deported from Singapore and Hong Kong this year for posting radical Islamist material on social media. They spent a month or less in a deradicalisation shelter before joining up with the other militants, sources told Reuters. UK opposition Labour backs soft Brexit, putting pressure on May
LONDON - The opposition Labour Party says it would keep Britain in the European single market and customs union for a transitional period after Brexit, offering a clear alternative to the policies of Prime Minister Theresa May. The centreleft party would seek to maintain the “same basic terms” with the European Union, including the free movement of people, beyond March 2019 when Britain is set to leave the bloc, Labour’s Brexit spokesman Keir Starmer said on Sunday. Labour wanted to avoid a damaging “cliff edge” for the economy from an abrupt separation in less than two years. It would also aim to keep a form of customs union with the EU, and would possibly agree a new relationship with the single market, subject to negotiations, Starmer added in the Observer newspaper. Senior ministers in May’s Conservative government have ruled out remaining in the single market and customs union during any transitional phase following Brexit. Starmer said following EU rules for a period would allow goods and services to continue to flow between the EU and Britain without tariffs, customs checks or additional red tape. Starmer’s comments follow months of uncertainty and division on Labour’s position, and are aimed at providing a springboard for party leader Jeremy Corbyn to potentially defeat the Conservatives in any new election. BRASILIA - Brazil’s Supreme Court justice on Friday opened a corruption investigation into the nation’s agriculture minister, Blairo Maggi, who is accused of leading a graft scheme when he served as governor of Mato Grosso state from 2003 to 2010. In a separate development in a deepening corruption scandal, the country’s top prosecutor filed charges against four senators of the ruling Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB) and its former president José Sarney. Justice Luiz Fux approved the investigation request made by Prosecutor General Rodrigo Janot, who alleges that Maggi, a billionaire who made his fortune as Brazil’s largest soy farmer, arranged for state lawmakers to be paid off to support his political agenda when he was governor. Janot’s allegations are based on pleabargain testimony made by Silval Barbosa, who served as Maggi’s vice governor from 2007 to 2010. Among the accusations, he alleged Maggi instructed his deputy to pay his campaign debts with public funds. Maggi denied the accusations in a statement and said he was confident that the investigation would prove his innocence. “I reject the allegation that I led or organized criminal activities in Mato Grosso. I have never used illegal means in my public life or in my companies,” Maggi said. With agricultural exports the bright light in Brazil’s slumped economy, Maggi is a key minister in President Michel Temer’s government, which has been weakened by accusations that forced out ministers and even reached the president. Apart from office buildings another heritage left from the Dutch colonial period is the art of Janger that was a popular form of entertainment in Buleleng during the occupation. The Janger from Menyali village, Sawan that emerged during the colonial period has been reconstructed by the Janger Saraswati Art Troupe and was recently performed in the former Buleleng Harbour. The District of Buleleng will be presenting the Janger Menyali during the 39th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) in June at the Denpasar Art Center, evoking the heyday of this art form. The Janger Menyali performance in Buleleng Harbour was especially interesting because it was performed by elderly dancers who had not performed the Janger since the 1960’s and 70’s. The dancers looking dapper in their attire of red berets, badges, shirts, socks and shoes, This costume, he said is different than the one usually worn by more contemporary Janger dances. Headman of Menyali, Made Jaya Harta, explained that male Janger dancers used to be known as jipak. Jipak Janger dancers from his village indeed used to
be wear costumes inspired by the Dutch Army that was docked at Buleleng Customs (former Buleleng Harbor—Ed). Over time, the style and costume of Janger Menyali changed under the influenced of other arts including “Janger Kreasi”. “The songs and dance movements are similar but the costumes for “Janger Kresi” are quite different. Janger Menyali is rarely ever performed anymore and was on the verge of disappearing all together before this reconstruction was put together. There was one staging of this dance not too long ago in Lom-
bok”, said Headman Harta. The reconstruction of Janger Menyali started in Febuary 2017. It was considered to be important to revive this dance as it is believed to be a sacred dance (sanghyang dance). Harta and others are therefor committed to preserving the Janger Menyali dance. “We have to preserve this ancestral heritage from the Dutch era. We started to reconstruct this dance by teaming up with the old dancers and then got some younger dancers involved. The result is a dance that can make Buleleng proud” explained Harta. (kmb)
The Tangkup waterfall attraction located at Undisan Kelod hamlet, Undisan, Tembuku, Bangli, has yet to be known to many people as it has only been operating as a tourist attraction for about a year and a half. Since it opened to the public, both local and foreign tourists have been coming to enjoy the crystal clear waterfall and to do purification rites. To find the waterfall that is located behind the steep rock cliff, visitors must use a motorcycle to travel two kilometers along a narrow road to reach the falls from the main road. It is not accessible by car. On motorcycle or mountain bike it takes about 15 minutes, and on foot it takesa botu 40 minutes from the main road. Attendant of Tangkup waterfall, I Made Sunarta, accompanied by colleague, I Wayan Gentos, said on Saturday (May 13) that the waterfall that has only been open to the public for a year and a half, continues to be promoted and have improvements made to it so that people will keep coming in the future. “This tourist attraction officially opened to the public on August 17, 2015”, said Sunarta. Sunarta added that there has been a gradual increase in the number of both local and foregin visitors who have come to enjoy the waterfalls and steep cliff, since it opened. “On average there are about 6-8 visitors per day and at least on visitor per day but on religious holidays like Galungan and Kuningan there can be hundreds of visitors a day” said Sunarta adding that the entrance fee is IDR 5,000 for locals and IDR 10,000 for foreigners. The water fall is fed by five separate springs: the Kibul, Besi, Belatuk, purificatory site of Bathara Pucak Sari and the Getar spring. Originally the waterfall was Belegiding Tangkup waterfall but they decided to shorten it to Tangkup waterfall to make it easier to remember. “So, word belegiding in Balinese means ‘high and slippery cliff’ ”, he said. Sunarta also explained that this tourist attraction is managed by the local ‘tourism awareness group” (Porkdawis). Before that the waterfall attraction had been managed by the Undisan Kelod customary youth club. Because so many local youths have left the village for either work or further education, the management of the waterfall was taken over by the Pordawis. The funds generated from the entrance tickets, are used to construct supporting structures such as a guard post, toilets and changing rooms fro visitors who come to melukat (purification rite). As of yet, the changing room is still quite rudimentary, but Sunarta explained that once they have enough funds, they will make further improvements, including creating a concrete guard post, instead of the bamboo one that stands there now. He added that he hopes to have government assistance for enlarging the road to the waterfall so that cars will be able to pass through it. “Hopefully, the government will be able to provide assistance so that the road can be widened. With access to cars, there will be more visitors. Many people complain that the road is too narrow” concluded Sunarta. (kmb)

They could process such traditional ingredients into delicious cuisine and was presented in modern menu. Other than unique presentation, the menu created by these chefs also has a distinctive taste.
In the contest, Arya Nata made menu Muscovy duck spring roll with spicy sauce (appetizer), Muscovy duck twisted satay, timbung rice, uyang-aying spice, bamboo shoot vegetable and gooseweed with spicy sauce (main course) and banana roll dumplings (dessert). The chefs were able to mix and serve delicious and nutritious menu that can be enjoyed by local people and foreign tourists. HONG KONG - Tropical storm Pakhar brought strong winds and heavy rain to Hong Kong and Macau on Sunday, just four days after one of the strongest typhoons on record, Hato, caused serious flooding and damage in the territories and killed at least 10 people in the gaming hub. The two cities lowered their typhoon signal to No.3 in the early afternoon, after Pakhar brushed passed and landed in the southern Chinese city of Taishan in the morning. Both cities issued their thirdhighest weather warnings, storm signal No. 8, early in the day as winds intensified and heavy rain lashed down, churning up rough seas and prompting alerts of flooding in low-lying areas. No serious damage has been observed in Hong Kong so far. The government said it has received 13 reports of flooding and 159 reports of fallen trees. Hong Kong’s weather observatory said in the early hours that winds occasionally reached storm force in the southern part of the territory and hurricane force on high ground on Lantau Island to the west of the city where the airport is situated. China’s Meteorological Administration maintained its yellow typhoon warning, the third-highest of four levels, as of midday Sunday and said torrential rains are expected in several southern provinces through Monday afternoon. Airport Authority Hong Kong reported 300 flights have been cancelled or delayed, and around 30 diverted to other places by noon. Hong Kong’s flagship carrier, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd , said the storm would cause delays and cancellations to flights arriving and departing on Sunday and Monday. Some ferries to Macau and outlying islands in Hong Kong resumed service after the typhoon

BERLIN - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she has no regrets about her 2015 decision to open the country’s borders to hundreds of thousands of refugees and added she will not be deterred from campaigning by angry hecklers. In an interview with the Welt am Sonntag newspaper on Sunday, Merkel denied she had made any mistakes with her open-door policy even though the arrival of a million refugees over the last two years from Syria and Iraq opened deep rifts in her conservative party and depressed its support. Four weeks before the Sept. 24 election, an Emnid opinion poll on Sunday showed Merkel’s conservatives would win 38 percent, or 15 points ahead of the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD). That is up from 32 percent in February but well below the 41.5 percent her party won in the last election in 2013. “I’d make all the important decisions of 2015 the same way again,” Merkel said. “It was an extraordinary situation and I made my decision based on what I thought was right from a political and humanitarian standpoint. “Those kinds of extraordinary situations happen every once in a while in a country’s history,” she added. “The head of government has to act and I did.” Her decision to open the borders

London gears up for Notting Hill carnival, in shadow of Grenfell Tower
LONDON - It is one of London’s most colourful and noisy events - a weekend carnival to celebrate Afro-Caribbean culture in what has become Europe’s biggest street festival. But this year, the processions at Notting Hill carnival will fall silent when the floats, dancers and singers pass Grenfell Tower, charred after a fire killed at least 80 people in what has become a symbol of the stark divide between rich and poor. The tower stands less that half a mile from the route of the procession and the local community is determined to remember the victims at the two-day carnival, starting on Sunday. But as well as sadness there is anger directed at the local authorities and the government after fire raced through the block and trapped dozens living in its upper floors in June. Some fear that tempers could boil over at the festival, but the local community is determined it should be a peaceful vigil. “I am pleased it’s going ahead. Carnival is this community and
this community is carnival,” said Zoe LeVack, a youth worker and co-founder of Kids on the Green, which provided activities and mental health support in the aftermath of the fire. “Grenfell is an outrage ... and the community is very angry. So if anything, the carnival going ahead is a celebration of the people whose lives have been lost, but it’s also making a stand,” she told Reuters. The carnival will see its usual mix of eclectic costumes, decorated floats and exuberant dancers, but it will fall silent for a minute on both days. Visitors have been told to avoid taking shortcuts across the
estate where the tower stands. “Kids on the Green” are using a samba float for their tribute to Grenfell’s victims, while revellers at the carnival have been encouraged to wear an item of green clothing in memory of the victims of the fire. COMMUNITY SUPPORT The blaze prompted widespread support for the community, but also anger over accusations of mismanagement by the local authorities. Protesters stormed the council building in the days after the tragedy, and the borough council leader resigned.
The council was criticised by locals and politicians for its slow and ineffective response to the fire, while many accuse the authority, which administers one of Britain’s wealthiest areas, of having turned its back on social housing. Earlier this week, Prime Minister Theresa May said she had a “dignified and very respectful” meeting with residents of Grenfell Tower. But mistrust of authority remains, and is being intensified by a police crackdown on knife and drug crime. BEING a farmer must be creative. Farmers that only run regular activities will never get advancement. This has been experienced by Ida Wayan Oka, one of the agricultural practitioners in Karangasem. Since the past few years, he has been diligently searching for unused or dormant lands. It is not used to make a plot, but to develop prominent agricultural products. They include chili, onion, wheat, tomatoes and other products needed in Bali. What are the activities of this man who is also the Chairman of the Karangasem Agribusiness Association? From the beginning, he claimed to be moved to take advantage of marginal lands in Karangasem. In addition to being utilized, it is also an effort to develop agriculture in Karangasem. By involving farming groups, he cultivates several products becoming daily necessities such as chili. For example, at the hamlet of Gunaksa, Ababi, he initially tried to develop chili on one hectare of land. After running a few months, apparently the results are pretty good. Due to vivacity of local farmer groups, now the location of chili cultivation around the location has reached 11.2 hectares. Since the land and the environment are suitable, his agricultural product is made sustainable. It is meant to keep product availability in the market. To make the products sustainable, this farmer figure of Budakeling plants new seeds in the area of two hectares. He does no longer need to purchase seeds to be planted, but prepares alone. “We arrange the planting of seeds in an area of two hectares per month, so that the production is not interrupted,” said Ida Wayan Oka, when met in Amlapura on Wednesday (Aug. 23). He said the smooth development of agricultural products is inseparable from the assistance provided by Bank Indonesia (BI). The assistance starts from soil cultivation, seed availability, use of vegetable pesticides to appropriate market discovery so the price fluctuation is not high enough for every harvest. BI also teaches not to use chemical-based fertilizers in the development of agricultural products, but the results remain maximal. In essence, according to Ida Wayan Oka, farming is not difficult. Most importantly, there should be a will and never force products on inappropriate land. With tenacity of farming, according to Ida Wayan Oka, other products are actually very easy to develop in Karangasem. For example, onion is very potential to be developed in the area of Jungutan, ranging from the Pura, Bukit Cemara and Nangka hamlet to the eastern area of Abang. According to him, they are very potential. If the land is utilized, you can imagine how big the production will be. Wheat is also suitable to be developed there. “Like at Batur, it is very suitable to cultivate onion,” he said. His agricultural products have also been developed into several processed products. For example, his chilies have been processed into chili sauce. To make more durable, do not use preservatives but reduce the pH--for example, from 4 to 3.5. The result of the processed product could last six months. Other than red peppers, green chilies can also be processed into chili sauce. This has been successfully done and absorbed by the market well through the efforts of BI by bringing together the farmers and buyers. Aside from condiment, tomato products can also processed into syrup. The market is waiting for Bali’s agricultural products. If the product already exists, they will be very quickly channeled into the market. Ida Wayan Oka added that other than developing in Karangasem and Bangli (Batur), he also actively develops agricultural products in Nusa Penida through the assistance of BI. (gik)

AMLAPURA — Karangasem demands for alignment of the tinkling of dollars from the rapid development of tourism in Bali. Although Bali tourist visit is very high, in fact Karangasem cannot do anything. Karangasem can only get the dregs of the Bali tourism development. This was criticism of Chairman of the Ujung Water Palace Management, Ida Made Alit, when attending the coordination meeting on the development of rural and urban destination by central government in Karangasem on Tuesday (Aug. 22). According to him, the objects and famous tourist attraction in Bali are mostly located in Karangasem, such as Besakih Temple, Tirtagangga, Ujung Water Palace, Tulamben, Amed, Candidasa, Tenganan and many others. Moreover, they have now developed into 57 objects and tourist attractions. With so many choices of objects, such as heritage, cultural attractions, agro-tourism and others, the tourist visits to Karangasem are considered to have increased. However, all this time according to Ida Made Alit, tourists never stay in Karangasem. “When making a visit to Bali, tourists travel to Karangasem but stay in Badung, Denpasar or Gianyar. They are our potential, but the other regions earn the dollars. What should we do to resolve this situation?” asked Ida Made Alit. Actually this issue has been realized for a long time. But,
until now there is no appropriate solution to overcome them. Currently, Karangasem is actively building tourism in order to replace the quarrying activities posing the largest contributor to the regionally generated revenue (PAD) in Karangasem. Moreover, Karangasem dares to target the visit of 1 million tourists per year. Although the support of tourist accommodation is quite good, Karangasem still cannot ‘force’ tourists to stay in Karangasem. Culture agency highlighted that tourism development should maximize its contribution to the PAD. Secretary of the Karangasem Culture Agency, Komang Subadra, said that capital of Karangasem with its destination and cultural richness should be directly proportional to contribute greatly to PAD of local government. “Local government develops tourism with ultimate goal to support the revenue. We
have the potentials, but they are enjoyed by other regions, it’s the problem,” he said. A speaker from Pancasila University Jakarta, Dr. Devi Krisnandha Kausar, in the meeting could not provide with solutions needed by Karangasem. On this matter, the dean of the tourism faculty of Pancasila University said that territory has become a classical problem in Indonesia. She saw this because of the small territory of ??Bali. Thus, the distance between districts and city is not too far away. This makes tourists reluctant to stay in Karangasem because the distance of Denpasar - Karangasem currently can be reached within one and a half hours. “Other than in Bali, similar problem is also experienced by our colleagues in Java. MANGUPURA —Ahead of the implementation of the International Monetary Fund-World Bank (IMF-WB) Annual Meeting 2018 falling in October, a number of infrastructures are quickly restored. They include the airport underpass project, Tanjung Benoa cruise terminal, waste handling at Suwung landfill et cetera. “The improvement of our infrastructure is not solely worked on due to the annual meeting. We are indeed utilizing the annual meeting to also benefit the people of Indonesia,” said Luhut B. Panjaitan, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs serving
as Chairman of the Committee in the event. He asserted the infrastructure built is to accelerate the process. The project should have been completed in 2019, but accelerated to 2018. Thus, the existing tourism-supporting infrastructure can be accomplished. For example, completion of the underpass near the airport is targeted to be completed in August 2018. “We are also accelerating the settlement of problem taking place for 17 years namely the Tanjung Benoa cruise terminal. This one has been made sure that it will be completed next year
and has been starting to require deepening the port groove. So, the cruise can get there and it will be the best possible hub terminal cruise in ASEAN,” he said at the launch of the IMF-WB 2018 website on Friday (Aug. 25) at the BNDCC, Nusa Dua. Another 17-year unfinished project is the Suwung landfill. “We have already started doing next month. The process will be immediately decided,” he added. So, the expenditure of IDR 868 billion allocated can give added value to the people of Indonesia. Of the IDR 868 billion, only IDR 555 billion will be used. As
much as IDR 234 billion will be spent to rent hotel accommodation and so forth while delegates will pay their own expenses on hotel accommodation. From the event, the profit obtained is predicted to reach USD 100 million. However, there are still many unseen advantages to Indonesia such as driving the economy at tourist destinations and some 60 tour packages will be offered as well. Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani, added that the fund originates from the state budget 2017. The total budget is allocated for the purchase of local products. All rooms in the BNDCC will be
converted into offices during the IMF-WB annual meeting including computer peripherals. After the event, the device will be donated to schools. Food to art performances will be given by Indonesian artists. The budget worth IDR 650 billion will be allocated for infrastructural improvement and cultural event. Governor of Bank Indonesia, Agus Martowardojo, said the IMFWB annual meeting is the largest financial meeting in the world. After hit by crisis, Indonesia could successfully rise 20 years later. LOS ANGELES - Walt Disney Co will send “Star Wars” characters into the realm of augmented reality next week to draw fans into stores as they release new merchandise tied to upcoming movie the “The Last Jedi,” the company said in a statement on Thursday. Starting at 12:01 a.m. PDT (0701 GMT) on Sept. 1, more than 20,000 retail locations in 30 countries will feature displays that fans can scan with their smartphones to reveal characters such as Rey or Chewbacca. Using augmented reality technology, users will see the characters overlaid on their surroundings by looking through their phone’s cameras, and can take photos or videos with them. Disney is tapping into the trend of augmented reality, or AR, which first gained mass adoption in July 2016 with the release of Niantic Inc’s Pokemon Go game. The hunt for “Star Wars” characters is scheduled to last three days and will coincide with “Force Friday II,” when retailers start selling toys and other products tied to “The Last Jedi.”
Retailers include Wal-Mart Stores Inc, Target Inc , and Best Buy Co Inc stores. “Last Jedi” merchandise will also be sold online, and the AR characters will be accessible via some websites. Apple Inc stores will sell new app-enabled “Star Wars” toys made by third parties but will not take part in the augmented reality hunt. Apple stores will hold other “Star Wars” events during the “Force Friday II” weekend. “Star Wars,” one of Disney’s most important franchises, was the U.S. toy industry’s top-selling property for 2015 and 2016, with $1.5 billion in sales over the two years, according to research firm NPD. “The Last Jedi,” the eighth movie in the “Star Wars” film saga, arrives in theaters in December. Mayweather silences McGregor with 10th round stoppage

LAS VEGAS - A ruthless Floyd Mayweather scored a 10th round technical knockout over mixed martial arts champion Conor McGregor on Saturday, the American cementing his legacy as an all-time boxing great with his 50th win in as many fights. Mayweather, who had guaranteed an early finish to the 12 round contest, made good on his promise when he pinned a brave-but-limited McGregor on the ropes and mercilessly hammered the Irishman before referee Robert Byrd stepped in to halt the bout. The fight, which Mayweather insisted would be his last, sends the 40year-old into his second retirement with a unblemished 50-0 record to surpass heavyweight legend Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 mark for most wins without a loss or draw. “This was my last fight tonight. For sure,” Mayweather declared in the ring. “Tonight was my last fight. Tonight I chose the right dance partner to dance with. “Conor you are a hell of a champion. “A win is a win, no matter how you get it. Rocky Marciano is a legend and I look forward to going into the Hall
of Fame one day.” Whether the fight will be the richest of all-time as promoters had predicted will be decided later when pay-per-view numbers come in, but it certainly will not be included on any list of the great bouts in boxing. On paper it would be hard to find a bigger mismatch, but it did not prevent millions around the globe from reaching for their wallets to purchase a pay-per-view package or the 14,623 spectators at T-Mobile Arena to part with big money for tickets. In the end, the fight proved to be the one-sided contest many had
predicted as Mayweather shook off the rust of two years of inactivity against an outclassed double UFC champion making his professional boxing debut. FEW OPENINGS For months, the charismatic McGregor had boasted he would knock out Mayweather and his legions of loyal fans believed every word of a man capable of backing his supreme self-confidence with devastating power inside the octagon. However, McGregor’s lack of ring savvy quickly exposed him as

The American’s domination was complete by the 10th round as he moved in for the kill to record his first early finish since he stopped Victor Ortiz in controversial fashion almost six
years ago. “I thought it was close,” a defiant McGregor argued. “I thought I had him in the early rounds. I thought he was getting me in the middle toward the end. “But where was the final two rounds? Let me wobble back to me corner. Let me try and recompose myself. You’ve got to put me out. “I thought it was a little early of a stoppage. I get like that when I am tired. I get a little wobbly and flowy.
