Agung Amerta Buana Temple in Batam

‘Lotus of the World’ in Northwest Indonesia gung Amerta Buana Temple is strategically located on Jalan Gajah Mada #3 Sei Ladi, Batam. In the subdistrict of Sekupang. The temple is easy to find as it stands near the reservoir-like Sei Ladi. As Hindu pilgrims enter the temple a strong vibration can be felt. Galungan penjor and other typical balinese temple ornaments decorate this temple. Wayan Catra Yasa helped to pioneer Aging Amerta Buana Temple in Batam and in an article he explains that there was a long process leading to the founding of the temple. Several of the locations that had been chosen for the temple had to be abandoned due to security considerations. The establishment of the temple had to be in line with pewarah-warah or local guidelines in order to avoid potential conflicts in the future. After a long entanglement in matteres related to location, several prominent Hindu figures in Batam who were pioneering the project, finally found a place in the jungle. The forest is considered haunted, as many local people have experenced strange incidents there. The forest is about two hectares wide and includes a hill. It was therefore difficult to determine where the padmasana shrine should be located. IN order ot determine the location of padmasana, the initiators of the temple project meditated together. Guidance was obtained by the high priests. On March 18, 2000, a joint meditation led by Ida Pedanda Gede Oka Kemenuh was finally successful in determining where the the padmasana shrine would be built. Five months later on June 4, the groundbreaking took place and was witnessed by then Director General of Hindu and Buddha Mass Guidance,Wayan Suarjaya, along with Ida Pedanda Gede Oka Kemenuh. Then in 2003, the shrine was inaugurated with a small-scale ritual so that it could be used as a sanctum to say prayers. Finally on June 16, 2004, Agung Amerta Buana Temple was inaugurated in the town of Batam by the Minister of Religious Affairs then, Prof. Said Agil Al Munawar. On November 2, 2009, ten years after the temple plan was established, the initiators held a ngenteg linggih ritual. At Batam’s Agung Amerta Buana Temple sits a relatively large padmasana shrine, standing some 21.7 meteres high. He height of the temple is derived from deep philosophical meaning taken from the Brahma Anariaka Upanisad. Catra Yasa who had been Chairman of the Hindu Dharma Council (PHDI) of Batam and Riau Islands as well as Secretary of the Central PHDI said that Hindu people should pronounce the word omkara as many as 21 times. The

height of 21 meters is interpreted as the process of the creation of the temple. The first five Oms are represent the five flavors called panca tan matra, while the second five Oms represent the five seeds known as panca mahabhuta, the third five Oms represent sensory stimuli known as Panca Budi Indria, and the last five Oms are panca karmendria. The last Om is called Shiva, Sadha Shiva and Parama Shiva, Paramaning Dumadi. The point 7 meters are interpreted as the seven Maharishis who received the revelation of Hinduism’s scriptures. In the main shrine of this temple there are also three dragons that symbolize Ananta Boga, Basuki and Taksaka. Right in the madyaning mandala (middle courtyard) of the temple the Jnana Sila Bakti asram has been established and is used as a school of religion for about 150 children. Uniquely, the teachers are their own parents. On every Hindu holyday, the Amerta Buana Temple is thronged by about 2,500 to 3,000 pilgrims from the town of Batam. The pujawali or temple festival is held to coincide with the fifth full moon falling in November. Most of the Hindu devotees living in Batam are diligent about coming to the temple. They ask for safety in their lives and prosperity in the diaspora. B N (BTN/kmb)

All were formidable archers from the land of Java and Bali participating in the Gita Raja Art Festival, an event to commemorate the first anniversary of the Pancer Langit Bali Foundation.

The match took place excitingly with some archers targeting around 100-meter goals divided into in several sessions. “This competition is unique with much charm. This event serves to train the archers in mental and archery skills”, explained an archer from Surakarta named L. Eddy Roostopo, who acted as a judge. youngsters. In addition to its atheltic qualities, archery also carries extraodrinary philosophy in terms of learning to focus, concentration and the practice of self-control. If one is introduced to archery early, mental stregth is honed and leads to great acheivements. “Unfortunately, traditional archery has been removed from the national games (PON). Actually it is a national cultural treasures that should be preserved, but instead it has been eliminated”, said this gold medalist of the PON XI. Archery has much to teach youngsters in terms of self-discipline, he said. “Traditional archery contests are part of efforts to preserve our cultural assets. There used to be a national archery league that competed in the national games. Hopefully, tra-

ditional archery will again be included in evens like the provincial games and the national games”, said A.A. Rahma Putra, the founder of Pancer Langit Bali Foundation.. The Gita Raja Art Festival also included the performnace of several traditional dances such as Teruna Jaya Dance, Jauk Dance as well as single drum performances and puppet gender gamelan show. There was also a modern dance workshop conducted by the Loka Art Dance and an archery workshop by SIPAS Solo, Central Java. “Through this event, the members of Pancer Langit hope to gain experience in professinal art management. Preserving traditional arts also gives birth to new artistic creations that are rooted in the noble values of tradition” he concluded. B N (BTN/015)

The Festival Tepi Sawah presented music and the art by inviting various art communities. On that account, it made the festival a reflection and messenger of awareness of environmental sustainability with the principle of reducing, reusing and recycling whether implemented in terms of production, sales of food and beverages, waste management or waste disposal and others. This festival used the edge of paddy fields as the venue. In addition to collaboration between the artists, the festival also offered some attractive architectural sequences. oodies may already be familiar with this delicacy made of boiled pork in thick gravy that is called siobak. The district of Buleleng is well known for its rich varety of culutre – including its special foods. In fact a visit to Buleleng would not be complete without indulging in some of its culinary treasures such as its popular Siobak. Siobak can be found in a variety of places in Buleleng ranging from street vendors to fine restaurant. Aye Syobak is the name of one of the street stalls that is quite popular in Buleleng. Manager Ketut Utama explained that he inherited his Siobka recipes from his biological grandmother and that he grew up learning how to run a the family food stall, so when Ketut got married, he dicided to continue the family business. Ketut also explained that they always use selected pork and in order to eliminate the pungent odor of pork they first boil the meat with spieces and soy sauce. This boiling process also yields the

They also use pork skin, fatty meat, offal and head of pork. “ Actually it is easy to make siobak, you just need meat and seasoning” he added. People from all over Buleleng and other parts of Bali come to enjoy this 62 year old man’s special siobak. “We often have customaers from Malaysia and other foreign countries who stop by when visitiing Buleleng”, said Ketut. Fine Arts and Design, Media for National Solidarity

n this era of openness, higher education is a suitable avenue for balancing the pressure of radicalism with cultural discourse delivered critically and ethically. This is very much needed to deal with issues such as intolerance, images / memes and hate speech that have been circulating lately. A national seminar held by the by Faculty of Fine Arts and Design (FSRD) of Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar in the Citta Kalangen Building on Tuesday (May 23) entitled Art and Design: The Historical Signs of History was very timely in addressing the current socio-political context of the nation today. Discussions included such themes as how the various elements of fine art and design can be combined to maintain

the commitment of national unity and solidarity. Participants included ISI’s academic community, arts experts, artists, designers as well as students from other universities in Bali and other regions as well. Resource persons of the seminar included Dr. Seno Gumira Ajidarma, (Rector of IKJ), Prof. Dr. Gede Arya Sugiartha (Rector of ISI Denpasar), Eddy Sutriyono (art curator) and keynote speaker Prof. Dr. Faruk, (humanist and professor of cultural sciences at UGM, Yogyakarta). The seminar was moderated by Chairman of PWI Bali, IGMB Dwikora Putra. The themes discussed during the seminar were divided into four subthemes. Dr. Seno Ajidarma talked about national iconography in current works of the art and design; Eddy Soetriyono focused on

National seminar initiated by Faculty of Fine Arts and Design (FSRD), ISI Denpasar, held in the Citta Kalangen Building.

a historical review of nationality in the exploration of fine arts and design of the archipelago; Prof. Faruk spoke of the value of nationality as a source of art creation and future design; and Prof. Arya explained about the role of art colleges in building artists and designers that take nationhood into consideration. In his presentation, Dr. Seno Ajidarma chose to look at the journey of Indonesian puppet comics in political identity. He emphasized that identity is formulated through production and is not a fixed permanent essence but rather is always in the process of transformation. Prof. Dr. Faruk spoke about the current turmoil of the nation and emphasized that a condition of panic makes it hard to remain clam and resolve issues wisely. We should not let issues of indentity lead us resolve problems with more problems. Dean of the FSRD of ISI Denpasar, Ni Made Rinu, revealed that the art and design are cultural work of the nation and that historically they have contribute to maintaining and mediating Indonesian nationalism. “For example, the poster ‘Boeng Ajo Boeng’ painted by Affandi and the words prepared by poet Chairil Anwar in the 1940s emphasizes nationalism and national unity. To Revive Tourism, Sidan Village Develops Spiritual Tourism at Tirta Empul Temple

arious efforts are being made to improve tourism conditions in Sidan vilage, Gianyar. The plan is to build up spiritual tourism around Tirta Empul temple in Sidan village and to create a single tour package that will include the Sidan stage that is currently not being used. Tirta Empul Temple priest from Sidan village, Dewa Aji Mangku, accompanied by Dewa Biyang Mangku, said that Tirta Empul is a subak (irrigation cooperative) temple whose piodalan (festival) falls every Sukra (Friday) Umanis Merakih. This temple belongs to Sidan customary village and is venerated by 48 members of Subak Labak at Sidan village. “The Temple celebration goes on for three days and coiincides with the piodalan of Dewi Sri, the Goddess of Rice”, he explained. Dewa Aki Magku also explained that near Sidan Village’s Tirta Empul Temple there are two springs: Trita Empul and Tirta Sudamala. “ Tirta Empul water is usually used for the consecration and for the piodalan while the Tirta Sudamala water is used for purification and for excorcism rites”, he explained. Outside the temple wall there is also a spring called Tirta Kegeringan located to the North of the Temple. This water is used to cure different diseases – particularly skin diseases. “ Many pilgrims come here asking for holy water for their healing. As an expression of their gratitude, they bring pejatiofferings”, he said. There are no special requirements for asking for Tirta Kegeringan water, it is enough to present canang sari oblations and to say sincere prayers. “Just put the offerings in the shrine next to the spring.

pilgrims usually bring offerings on Kajeng Kliwon or on the full moon”, he said. Headman of Sidan, Made Sukra Suyasa, plans to make the temple’s outermost courtyard into a spiritual tourism attraction with holy water and a jogging track. “Here are many springs here and some of them are believed to be holy water that can help provide healing” he added. The creation of this spiritual tourism program will start with making repairs to parts of Tirta Empul Temple including the water spouts as well as the creation of a sacred bathing pool in the south of the temple. “Once this is done,

we will work on the Sidan stage as a tourist attraction as it is currently not being used”, he complained. Suyasa emphasized that he can not revive the Sidan stage alone and that he hopes that the government of Gianyar will help to revive this east Gianyar site. “Of course, we need government assistance here, especially for reviving the stage”, he affirmed. They appeared along with Sida Nada Merdangga Bondres Gag troupe from Tengah hamlet, Sidakarya. The two art troupes are made of people from different generations and both were attractive and inspiring to younger artists. The elderly artists presented several performances including Panyembrama,

Panji Semirang, and Sandya Gita Dance with Gegitan (song entitled White Gardenia). BAF Denpasar 2017 with the theme ‘Ulun Danu’ (Preserving Water as Source of Life) is centered at Puputan Badung or I Gusti Ngurah Made Agung Square. “Through this year’s BAF, the Municipality of Denpasar continues to foster art troupes in the city of Denpasar as an way to preserve, explore and develop the artistic potential of this city. The conference was officially opened by the Deputy of Overseas Tourism Marketing Development, Ministry of Tourism, Prof. I Gede Pitana, together with Chairman of the STPBI I Made Sudjana, Hong Kong Polytechnic University Prof. Kaye Chon and President of APacCHRIE Dr. Amy So at Sofitel Resort, Nusa Dua, on Thursday (Jun 1). Especially for the 8 th Asia-Pacific Annual Conference for Tourism Students was mostly held at the STPBI. Prof. Pitana said that APacCHRIE event has become a promotion though there is negative issue lately. Foreign tourists still come to Bali because in reality Bali and Indonesia are still safe and comfortable to visit. “If we say that we are not afraid, then the world also says no fear. This becomes our tourism challenge that we can overcome,” he said. According to Prof. Pitana, the strategy to be done is to be honest. We must tell the truth and what we have done. For example, Indonesia is vast, so that something happens in Aceh will takes a long time to arrive in Bali. “Our human resources are still below Singapore and Thailand. We must pursue by developing educational institutions and training institutions,” he added. The effort taken by the ministry of tourism currently is to provide certification of training for 35,000 tourism workforce. “That’s how we develop our human resources. Human resources are the core and key to success of tourism. We see that Singapore is small but has good human resources, so that it can bring in 15 million foreign tourists. Actually, the population is 3.5 million. So, I appreciate to the event held by the International Bali Institute of Tourism,” he said. Made Sudjana added that STPBI has a way to improve human resources, especially in the field of tourism by providing knowledge and skills, so that later on they have qualifications. “We always do this with all colleagues to prepare

human resources so that they have international quality,” he said. By that way, continued Made Sudjana, the workers of Indonesia and Bali in particular can work overseas. “In other words, we will not worry about the entry of foreign human resources into our country to work. Our human resources are strong because many of them have international qualification that will work across the ASEAN countries. If we are strong, they will go. We are a big country and have a number of quality human resources, so that they dare to compete in the global level,” he explained. Further, I Made Sudjana explained that the Asia-Pacific CHRIE or better known as APacCHRIE is a federation of the I-CHRIE established in 1946. I-CHRIE is an organization in the field of global hospitality, tourism and tourism education institution offering the program on hotel and restaurant management, travel business management and catering. APacCHRIE membership includes 18 countries with more than 75 universities having the best reputation throughout Asia Pacific. This organization regularly holds conferences every year and it becomes the honor for Indonesia in the tourism sector as having been asked to host the APacCHRIE Conference. “STPBI has been registered as a member of the APacCHRIE since 2015, so that it becomes an opportunity for the STPBI to establish international cooperation,” he added. This conference, explained Made Sudjana, is intended to create a scientific atmosphere as a means for the development of tourism science as benchmarking with other institutions in the country, to improve the institution of higher education in the field of hospitality and tourism in improving competitiveness and quality of higher education institution in the field of hospitality and tourism in order to enhance the nation’s competitiveness. In the meantime, Grandpa Made Taro is telling a fairy tale of his own creation entitled Give Us Water. Both fairy tale stories have beautiful

backgrounds of paddy fields so that it is mandatory to keep the sanitation and sustainability. After listening to the fairy tale, children were then invited to play Balinese traditional games entitled tok lait kancing and meong-meongan. This event was supported by the Clean Bali Series team to educate children about environmental sanitation through fairy tales, games, reading books and other games. (BTN/015)

This cooperation is meant the help government programs in their effort to eradicate drug abuse and the smuggling of fish products. The agrement was signed by General Manager of Ngurah Rai Airport, Yanus, and Chief of the BNN Bali, I Putu Gede Suastawa and Head of KIPM Denpasar, Habrin Yake. Yanus said that this cooperation aims to prevent and combat drug abuse, trafficking and precursors at Ngurah Rai Air-

yang Nyang Beach in Bali is a pristine 1.5-kilometre stretch of coastline and also one of Bali’s least visited beaches. This is partly due to its far-flung location and the long trek required to reach it. Still, it makes for a prize destination for day-trippers and beach lovers exploring the southern Bukit peninsula, and offers great surf for those looking for waves to ride all for themselves. The beach is located in the Pecatu area, half a kilometre’s drive southeast of the Uluwatu Temple. There are several routes branching off from the Jalan Uluwatu main road that leads down to two halves of Nyang Nyang Beach, one of them is via

N

Jalan Batu Nunggulan and right at the cliff edge of Villa Plenilunio. From this end, you need to continue on an approximate half-hour trek down moderately rugged terrain and flight of stairs – a journey well worth it thanks to the splendid views over the limestone hillside covered in lush greenery and flowering bushes. Sounds and views of the ocean accompany your steady descent. Depending on the route you chose, the flight of stairs usually doesn’t end at the coast, but on flat grassy plains. Beyond this is the prize view when you sink your feet into the coarse sand. The deserted terrain is bordered by slanting cliffs as far as your eyes can see, with thin mists hanging above the ocean. Out at sea you will be able to see the

natural reef that breaks the incoming tides, allowing for calm and clear waters bordering the coast. The long coastline makes for a good walk, with virtually no other human in sight most of the time, other than occasional local seaweed farmers tending to their crops, or bold and lonesome surfers out on the reef break, having their thrill of a lifetime (only for the advanced, and those really determined on carrying their boards down and up the hill again). There are actually two halves of Nyang Nyang Beach, divided only by a broad grassy headland. Near the western end of the eastern half of Nyang Nyang, you’ll be treated to a lone split shipwreck on the sand. You can stay on for sunset here or make the climb up again before dark. It has also become a camping site for die-hard travellers and weekenders as the deserted ambiance makes it an excellent spot for bonfires under the stars and for those willing to set up tents and camp the night. Swimming out is not recommended; obviously there are no lifeguards on patrol. Also, be in good shape and bring adequate rations and drinking water – there are also no food stalls or peddlers, other than one at Nyang Nyang Beach’s western half, selling drinks and colourful beach cloths.

in Badung district has an area of 753.5 hectares and Denpasar City has an area of 620 hectares. West Bali National Park has mangrove forest as one of the vegetations with an area of 429 hectares in Jembrana district and 212 hectares in Buleleng district. Then, Nusa Lembongan forest located on Nusa Lembongan Island (Klungkung district) has 202 hectares of mangrove forest area. Mangrove forest has very important function as the lungs of the city where more rare trees have been replaced by concrete poles and retaining wall against sea waves and prevent abrasion. So, we have an obligation to maintain and preserve it. In addition to retaining sea waves and preventing abrasion, mangrove forest can also offer beautiful scenery, trekking location by crossing wooden bridges in the middle of the forest, and leisure place somewhere amid the mangrove forest while enjoying green open atmosphere. Some people also take advantage of this place as a prewedding photo shoot because it is quite interesting and iconic.

If you are staying in the area of South Bali such as Kuta, Tanjung Benoa, Nusa Dua or Sanur, you can schedule next tour to this mangrove forest. So far, in the Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park there are 12 mangrove species and seven species of mangrove association. Dominant species include the Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata, Avicennia marina and Sonneratia alba. In addition, it has a high biodiversity such as birds, reptiles and amphibians. Overall, there are 66 species of 27 families of bird species found in the Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park. Bird species in this area are dominated by waterfowl such as little pied cormorant, oriental darter, gray heron, great egret, intermediate egret, javan pond heron, black-crowned night heron, lesser whistling duck, Eurasian curlew and kingfisher. Other than birds, amphibian and reptile species are often found in this area such as frogs, iguanas, lizards, Asiatic soft shell turtles, mangrove snakes, et cetera.

However, he explained that for the time being they are just seeing how things go. “For the now we do not know what management will look like. If things go well, perhaps it will be taken over by the customary village. Let’s see how things progress” stated Wirya. As observation recently, the path to the waterfall is quite steep with the path leading along a steep precipice that is only accessible by foot. The water of this 25 foot waterfall is very clear.

Jelekungkang waterfall has begun to be arranged and made into a tourist attraction.

Detail of work Keliki Werda Jana Kerti Artists Association N line with its mission to preserve and promote traditional Balinese art in the contemporary context, Museum Puri Lukisan’s “Keliki: Exhibition: Werdi Jana Kerti “ presents an impressive collection of so called miniature drawings and paintings from about 60 different artists all of whom reside in Keliki village. The large number of artists participating in this exhibition in fact only represent a small number of all the artists of Keliki who produce works in this style. The Keliki School of Miniature painting founded in the early

1980’s has played an important role in allowing the art of Keliki village to flourish. Traditional Balinese painting in its purest form was originally intended for religious use, either as illustrations for religious scripts known as lontar or for amulet-like ornaments for shrines and other places. But, over the last century this intricate and specific form of art developed into different styles of painting that allow for more personal freedom of expression and that also serve different functions, including providing for the tourist market.

As witnessed in this exhibition however, we can see that despite the influence of the tourism market, the themes depicted in these art works still retains the religious lore of Bali as a point of reference and prominent theme. Also, the extreme patience, skill and dedication required to produce these mindbogglingly intricate drawings also speaks to the spiritual roots of this artistic style. It is only in the spirit of religious devotion that such intricate and aesthetically balanced artworks could come to light. The works featured in this exhibition are from artists from the Werdi Jana Kerti Artists’ Association who came together a few years ago to help support one and other in maintaining the integrity of this style. As one gazes more and more deeply into the scenes depicted by these dedicated artists, one cannot help but wonder how on earth they managed to squeeze so much beauty into such a small space -much the same way that many visitors to this island feel as they find endless things of beauty to discover in Bali. Keliki Exhibition: Werdi Jana Kerti will be showing at Puri Lukisan Ubud until June 28, 2017. Jalan Raya Ubud. Note: do not be scared off by the large number of tourist buses in the parking lot, most of the passengers have only come to enjoy lunch in the beautiful garden of the museum. B N

tination, Bali has always been long targeted by drug dealers. Initially, it was made into transit point. However, now it has been transformed into the market. This kind of condition is very counter-productive when viewing Bali as a paradise. It is not Paradise Island for drug dealer. Similarly, it is not a heaven to enjoy drugs. Bali is Bali with a certain aspect of tourism having become the trademark from time immemorial. Bali is a place where tourists can enjoy non-drug culture. If now Bali is said to be very familiar with drugs, certainly this becomes a serious slap. Bali is not famous because people are able to get and use drugs anywhere. All-permissive condition seems to have given such an impression today. There is an impression that people can do anything in Bali. It includes the violation against the law because it involves many unscrupulous officers, officials and their community. This should be prevented. Bali is famous not due to notorious thing. a municipality along with their distinctive plant. Each district has different plants. “We want to teach guests about Bali through this garden,” said the General Manager Wayan Sumandia amid the inauguration of the Furama

Organic Farm on Tuesday (Jun 6). Inauguration of the agro farm coincided with the tenth anniversary of the Furama Villas & Spa marked with the planting of typical tree owned by each district by tourists and invited guests. It has been cultivated across 1,800 square meters of land since three months ago. “It used to be an unproductive paddy field due to oversupply of water, so there was an idea to make this garden. It happens to become a tradition where every checking-out guest must plant trees. As a result, it needs another land, and then appears this agro farm,” said Sumandia. Existence of this Furama Organic Farm is also expected to affect the environment of Furama, especially children. Every month, it will invite elementary school children to learn about plants, how to grow crops and others, so they know about the types and life of the plants. “Each district in Bali has different plants. In the future, this agro farm will become educational tour and research center

for world researchers because the concept of this plant is based on Bali agriculture agency,” he asserted. He added the tenth celebration of the Furama Villas & Spa was started by carrying out joint prayers at Pucak Mangu Temple, balloon release, cycling and pilgrimage to West Bali. There are also internal competition of the big family, aid provision to elderly at Bindu village and free health checkup by inviting doctor and a visit to disabled people. In the tenth year, it also provides education to elementary school students related to tourism, hotels and agro tours as well as school mentoring, scholarship to students achieving the first, sec-

ond and third rank. “Starting last April, theoretical education was stopped because they were invited directly to the field, so they know the form and atmosphere of the original hotel and not just a theory,” he said. Especially for CSR, continued Sumandia, currently the Furama also provides assistance for people who care about wild dogs. A mother who guards and rescues the dogs is given a help. “Furama is just like the adoptive father of Bindu village. This village has the potential of attractions like tubing, healing, organic plants and the newly inaugurated agro farm that will become integrated tourism activities at Bindu tourism village,” he concluded. Le Mayeur de Merpres (1880– 1958) arrived in Bali in 1932. Three years later, he met and married the beautiful Legong dancer Ni Polok when she was just 15. They lived in this compound, which houses the museum, when Sanur was still a quiet fishing village. After the artist’s death, Ni Polok lived in the house until she died in 1985. The house is an interesting example of Balinese-style architecture – notice the beautifully carved window shutters that recount the story of Rama and Sita from the Ramayana. Despite security (some of Le Mayeur paintings have sold for US$150,000) and conservation problems, almost 90 of Le Mayeur’s paintings are displayed inside the

Head of the Buleleng Tourism Office, Nyoman Sutrisna, explained that Pemuteran is a tourist area set among clusters of hills and includes a stretch of strategic coastline along bali’s north sea. Many underwater caves of varying sizes are located here with a myriad of colorful coral reef and other marine biota. The marine park, said Sutrisna was created to provide homes for fish. “With faster growign coral reef, fish can also spawn faster”, he explained. With fish having homes they can live a healthy life and add to ecosystem of marine biota which in turn attracts more tourists ot come and visit Pemuteran. On eof the attractions for divers here is an underwater temple complete with 33 statues of gods, elephant fish and bedawang nala. “There are a tunnel as well as various domes so that fish can live comfortably” he added. he river at Perancak which is fed by several rivers in Jembrana is home to a mangrove Bull-racing Center forest Local residents often visit this river that flows through Budeng Village and Perancek on the weekedn to enjoy their leisure time. The mangrove forest has the potential to be developped into an eco-tourism destination. So far however this potential has yet to be tapped. Head of the Research Institute for Marine Observation (BPOL), I Nyoman Radiarta, said one hectare of land there that is owned by the BPOL (Seacorm) was deliberately planted woth mangrove decades ago. The mangrove forest also grows on land owned by Angkasa Pura and on state owned land. The Ministry of Maritime Affaris and Fisheries (KKP) has also been doing research on this mangrove area. “There are both natural and human-planted mangroves here. Reearch has shown that these plants have different characteristics and produce different types of carbon”, said Radiarta who is also a doctorate program alumnus from the Bogor Agricultural University (IPB). Resaerch ont eh mangrove forest, he added has included basic identification and issues related to global wwarming; althought eh area of the mangrove forest is quite small, it provides a significant continution to carbin stocking. The mangrove forest that surrounds the BPOL office has become habitat for aquatic animals such as crabs, birds and others. There is a lot of potential for developing this foret into a nature –based tourism destination. Hopefull the foret area will be manged in a sustainable way, continue to increase in area and be of financial benefit to the surrounding communities, though tourism but also by developping mangrove based products such as dyes for batiking, chips and juice. The coastal area of Perancak is home to one of Bali’s four mangrove forests. The other three are located in the West Bali National Park (TNBB), Nusa Penida and (Tahura) Ngurah Rai grand forest park in Denpasar. Although parts of these mangrove forests are owned by Seacrom, so far there is no prohibition on entering these areas. In the past they were deplorable cases of illegal mangrove logging. “From the outside these forests appear lush but with satellite imagery we can see that they have been damaged. If one day we create a jogging track through the forest here, maybe the people who committed these destructive acts will think twice about doing it again” explained Radiarta. Garbage disposal issues are another problem that needs to be addressed together. It is comon to see garbage floating down the Prancak River which then gets caught in the magroves. Recently, various nature loving communites joined forces to clean up the mangrove area. A number of sites that had been used as illegal garnage dump sites had sign boards put up warnign people not to litter. BTN

elebration of the Nyepi feast day for Hindus has very important significance to reflect on the nature and meaning of life. Aside from becoming a moment of introspection, it also poses a self-evaluation to purify the soul from all kinds of unfavorable behavior. This was revealed by the regent of Tabanan when giving a speech in the Dharma Shanti of Caka 1939 Nyepi Celebration on Monday (May 29). Regent Eka said that all the moral, spiritual and wisdom messages in a series of the celebration of Nyepi feast day essentially remain relevant in the present era. Refreshment and enlightenment for the Hindus is very important in the effort to keep high peace, tolerance and harmony in the life of society. aospahit Temple is located on the southern part of Denpasar. This is an old Hindu Balinese temple and the main gate was made of brick relief. The statue is made of clay representing a big Chinese man, a demon and a mythical bird (burung Garuda). The main entrance to the temple on Dr Sutomo Street, is opened only on festival days. The oldest part of this temple was brought from Majahpahit when Bali was under the influence of the biggest Majapahit Kingdom. The name of Maospahit Temple

Despite security (some of Le Mayeur paintings have sold for US$150,000) and conservation problems, almost 90 of Le Mayeur’s paintings are displayed inside the

ith the longest coastline in Bali, Buleleng has many leading marine tourism spots including Pemuteran Vuallge, Gerokgak, 55km west of the town of Singaraja in North Bali. Gerokgak is renowned as a marine conservation area and especially for their artificial bio-rock coral reef project. The local community along with some fondations are active in managing the conservatino of th coral reef. Head of the Buleleng Tourism Office, Nyoman Sutrisna, explained that Pemuteran is a tourist area set among clusters of hills and includes a stretch of strategic coastline along bali’s north sea. Pemuteran now has a unerwater park that can be reached by charted boat in about 15 minutes from Pemuteran. Diving and snorkeling are the leading attrcactions here along with the charm of the undersea park of Menjagan Island. BTN

Moreover, when raided by police, it was found hundreds of thousands of ecstasy pills being ready to be marketed. It is quite pathetic. tination, Bali has always been long targeted by drug dealers.

The event is one of the materials held at the Festival Tepi Sawah in Omah Apik, Pejeng, on Sunday (Jun 4). Gede Tarmada presented a fairy tale inspired by a Ba-

linese one entitled ‘Man Meri” written by a lover and observer of great tale named Agung Bawantara. Man Meri tells about the struggles of a child named Man Meri looking for his beloved missing duck.

(BTN/015)

yang Nyang Beach in Bali is a pristine 1.5-kilometre stretch of coastline and also one of Bali’s least visited beaches.

Dr. Seno Ajidarma talked about national iconography in current works of the art and design; Eddy Soetriyono focused on

a historical review of nationality in the exploration of fine arts and design of the archipelago; Prof.

Denpasar City to be Supported by 24 Art Troupes ge need not be a constraint in expressing one’s creativity. The vivacity of the Kencana Wiguna elderly gamelan troupe from Kehen hamlet, Kesiman Petilan was evidence of this. The elders presented an innovative art performance at the opening of the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) of Denpasar City on Friday (May 26). They appeared along with Sida Nada Merdangga Bondres Gag troupe from Tengah hamlet, Sidakarya. The two art troupes are made of people from different generations and both were attractive and inspiring to younger artists. This was not due to the styel presented but rather to the gamelan music and dance that had a distinctly contemporary flavour.

Artists from Denpasar continue to receive attention from the government through sustainable coaching, programs” said Mayor of Denpasar, I.B. he International Bali Institute of Tourism (STPBI) hosted and organized the 15th AsiaPacific Tourism Conference by the Asia-Pacific Council on Hotels, Restaurant and Institutional Education (APacCHRIE). The conference was attended by 400 participants consisting of practitioners and academicians from various countries in AsiaPacific. The conference took place from May 31 to June 2, 2017.

I-CHRIE is an organization in the field of global hospitality, tourism and tourism education institution offering the program on hotel and restaurant management, travel business management and catering. oodies may already be familiar with this delicacy made of boiled pork in thick gravy that is called siobak. This boiling process also yields the

tasty gravy for which they are famous while the sauce soy sauce gives that special sweetness. The distinctives foods of Buleleng are clearly not just popular with locals but with people from all over. Since siobak there are more and more people serving siobak in Bulelelng, Ketut needs to keep his recipie fine tuned in order to remain competitive. “Since my mother’S time our flavour has remained the same. It feels original without adding extra ingredients” he said. According to Ketut Utama, it is important to keep the authenticity of Buleleng siobaks’ flavour.
