Agung Amerta Buana Temple in Batam
‘Lotus of the World’ in Northwest Indonesia gung Amerta Buana Temple is strategically located on Jalan Gajah Mada #3 Sei Ladi, Batam. In the subdistrict of Sekupang. The temple is easy to find as it stands near the reservoir-like Sei Ladi. As Hindu pilgrims enter the temple a strong vibration can be felt. Galungan penjor and other typical balinese temple ornaments decorate this temple. Wayan Catra Yasa helped to pioneer Aging Amerta Buana Temple in Batam and in an article he explains that there was a long process leading to the founding of the temple. Several of the locations that had been chosen for the temple had to be abandoned due to security considerations. The establishment of the temple had to be in line with pewarah-warah or local guidelines in order to avoid potential conflicts in the future. After a long entanglement in matteres related to location, several prominent Hindu figures in Batam who were pioneering the project, finally found a place in the jungle. The forest is considered haunted, as many local people have experenced strange incidents there. The forest is about two hectares wide and includes a hill. It was therefore difficult to determine where the padmasana shrine should be located. IN order ot determine the location of padmasana, the initiators of the temple project meditated together. Guidance was obtained by the high priests. On March 18, 2000, a joint meditation led by Ida Pedanda Gede Oka Kemenuh was finally successful in determining where the the padmasana shrine would be built. Five months later on June 4, the groundbreaking took place and was witnessed by then Director General of Hindu and Buddha Mass Guidance,Wayan Suarjaya, along with Ida Pedanda Gede Oka Kemenuh. Then in 2003, the shrine was inaugurated with a small-scale ritual so that it could be used as a sanctum to say prayers. Finally on June 16, 2004, Agung Amerta Buana Temple was inaugurated in the town of Batam by the Minister of Religious Affairs then, Prof. Said Agil Al Munawar. On November 2, 2009, ten years after the temple plan was established, the initiators held a ngenteg linggih ritual. At Batam’s Agung Amerta Buana Temple sits a relatively large padmasana shrine, standing some 21.7 meteres high. He height of the temple is derived from deep philosophical meaning taken from the Brahma Anariaka Upanisad. Catra Yasa who had been Chairman of the Hindu Dharma Council (PHDI) of Batam and Riau Islands as well as Secretary of the Central PHDI said that Hindu people should pronounce the word omkara as many as 21 times. height of 21 meters is interpreted as the process of the creation of the temple. The first five Oms are represent the five flavors called panca tan matra, while the second five Oms represent the five seeds known as panca mahabhuta, the third five Oms represent sensory stimuli known as Panca Budi Indria, and the last five Oms are panca karmendria. The last Om is called Shiva, Sadha Shiva and Parama Shiva, Paramaning Dumadi. The point 7 meters are interpreted as the seven Maharishis who received the revelation of Hinduism’s scriptures. In the main shrine of this temple there are also three dragons that symbolize Ananta Boga, Basuki and Taksaka. Right in the madyaning mandala (middle courtyard) of the temple the Jnana Sila Bakti asram has been established and is used as a school of religion for about 150 children. Uniquely, the teachers are their own parents. On every Hindu holyday, the Amerta Buana Temple is thronged by about 2,500 to 3,000 pilgrims from the town of Batam. The pujawali or temple festival is held to coincide with the fifth full moon falling in November. Most of the Hindu devotees living in Batam are diligent about coming to the temple. They ask for safety in their lives and prosperity in the diaspora. B N (BTN/kmb)
