ati Temple is nestled within the area of Pengambengan village, about four kilometers south of the town of Negara, Jembrana. The temple spreading across an area of approximately 4,700 square meters is one of the dang khayangan temples (used to venerate a Hindu sage) in Jembrana. As the name implies, this temple has distinctiveness where teak trees grow inside the temple area. This temple is also closely related to the pilgrimage of Dang Hyang Nirartha on the Island of Bali. In the innermost courtyard for worship lie an oblation pavilion, gamelan pavilion, piasan pavilion and a chamber to store cloth paraphernalia. Four teak trees grow in the temple area. According to many of supporting devotee chief, Ketut Astika Jaya, the teak trees had distinctiveness. Aside from prohibited from taking the teak seedlings, the branches of trees belonging to hundreds of years old never toppled over the padmasana shrine underneath. The branch broke itself into ashes and did not topple over the padmasana shrine. Around the spring, there were four teak trees growing close to one another. Once upon a time, one of the trees bent and almost toppled over the temple compound wall. Devotees originally worried if it would touch the wall, but after a few months the tree could stand upright by itself. “In addition, after several years, the distance of the padmasana shrine to the teak trees was once only a few centimeters, but now has gone farther up to two meters away. Formerly, the temple priest should lean his body when passing, but now he can pass freely,” he explained. In the middle courtyard lay a resting pavilion, grand entrance gates, apit lawang, tower of wooden split drum (kulkul) and kitchen. Meanwhile, in the outermost courtyard lay the wantilan hall and quite ample parking lot. The temple also got assistance from the regent of Jembrana used to build a fence around the temple area and split gates. In the next five years, the innermost courtyard of the temple would be restored because some parts of the temple had been fragile. Other than on the piodalan or temple anniversary, the temple supported by four customary villages in the Negara subdistrict was also visited by many pil-

grims on full moon. Those pilgrims were dominated by teenagers and students who wanted to have purificatory rite or malukat. Similarly, myriad of pilgrims also came to worship on Sarasvati Day. In the innermost courtyard lay seven buildings including the padmasana, three-tiered meru shrine, pepelik pavilion, Sri Sedana, representation of Ulun Danu Temple, taksu, chamber to store sanctified effigies and anglurah shrine. The four customary villages supporting the temple were the Tegal Badeng Kauh, Tegal Badeng Kangin, Lelateng and Puseh Agung (Tengah hamlet). This temple was closely associated with Dang Hyang Nirartha as well as two other dang khayangan temples in Jembrana, namely the Perancak and Mertasari. He dropped in at the temple after arriving at Perancak (Dang Khayangan Perancak) and at Mertasari village (Amerthasari Temple). At that time, it was a barren area called Awen and posed a swamp and forest area. During the pilgrimage, he had unwound there and did meditation. Before meditating, he had stuck his stick in a pile and when unplugged it grew into teak trees. In one of the teak tree cavities lay an endless spring. Until now, the trees remain to exist in the temple area. Meanwhile, the temple anniversary falls on Coma (Monday) Pon Wuku Sinta. B N (BTN/kmb)

akepung or buffalo race tradition in Jembrana district has increased from year to year. It can be seen from the number of participants. In addition to buffalo race using cart and doing competition in dry circuits, an increasing number of participants also happens to the Makepung Lampit (using plow and taking place in wet circuit).

Made Mara, said the interest of buffalo owners to follow the race is quite high. Moreover, Makepung Lampit is not only a show, but also wrapped in a racing like Makepung in circuit which is usually organized annually. The intensity of Makepung Lampit competition is less than Makepung in Circuit because it is waiting for planting time in paddy fields.

In total, there are 8 Makepung exhibitions in a year. Among them, there are two races to struggle for rotating trophies, namely the Regent Cup and Jembrana Cup. At the end of the year, it is closed with Mekepung Lampit race. In addition to tourists, this event is also awaited by foreign and domestic photographers. This Makepung event in paddy field is rare and unique in terms of photos. Splashing of water when buffaloes are running is very attractive for taking pictures. Regent of Jembrana, I Putu Artha, said the Makepung event is a cultural attraction of Jembrana agrarian society and must be preserved. “We want this tradition to be preserved, especially in the younger generation so they also know the cultural attractions of Jembrana,” said Regent Artha. Traditional Games, an Application of Hindu Teachings

Business and Leisure

Where To Go . . .

Accepting defeat and recognizing the opponent’s victory in the game is an example of a sportsmanlike attitude. In addition to training physical endurance, the traditional games are also to hone the intelligence because when playing the children must be able to set the strategy. Rector of the State Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN) Denpasar, Prof. Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Sudiana, said that traditional games in Bali can become a medium for dissemination. In the games, they will always invite others as a reflection of cooperation. “In the game, there

is a lesson for mutual respect and apologies if something goes wrong and rewards when someone wins,” he said. The games also have very positive influence because it forces the children to be creative as they also demand higher creativity. Such activity can also increase self-confidence because there are elements to train communication. Children as players of the game become more confident and democratic. “When determining a leader or punishment for the offending child, they do by agreement,” added Sudiana. Besides, said this Chairman of

In Penebel, Regent Eka Participates in Dancing Rejang Renteng oad Show to commemorate the 524th anniversary of Tabanan town in 2017 featuring the concept of the People’s Party (Tabanan Fiesta) ended in Penebel subdistrict on Saturday (Nov. 25). Tabanan Fiesta in Penebel subdistrict became the most festive and special event. Regent of Tabanan, Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, accompanied by subdistrict head of Penebel, IGA Supartiwi, joined in the Rejang Renteng dance with the other dancers consisting of housewives. Although without training, Regent Eka immediately joined the dance, so that drew the amazement of the whole community along with the invitees in attendance. “Now, it is the turn for the leader to entertain its people. The leader does not have to be on top, but must go down much to entertain or pay devotional works. So, there is no boundary and space. On this occasion she also said there is Rejang Renteng Dance performed by 100 housewives. Well, I participate to entertain the people of Penebel,” said Regent Eka. According to her, entertaining people is also devotion, so that it can change the paradigm of society that always thinks that a leader can only watch the community. “This is a part of devotion because all this time people think that a leader just watches its people. Now, it is my turn to entertain people. It is ashamed of being a woman is unable to dance Rejang Renteng,” she said. At that time, Regent Eka was accompanied by the Regional Secretary of Tabanan, I Nyoman Wirna Ariwangsa, Penebel subdistrict head and several members of the Tabanan House of Representatives along with all the district agencies in the Tabanan regional government. Tabanan Government Tourism, Art and Cultural Office Address : Jln. Gunung Agung No. 1 Tabanan, Ph./Fax. (0361) 811602

Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) of Bali, traditional games are also part of the application of Hindu teachings such as philosophy (tattva), karmic law, tat tvam asi (You are that (God)) and Tri Kaya Parisudha. “When viewed from an educational perspective, people learn from nature. Meanwhile, if learning from cultural theories, people learn from others and the environment,” he explained. When playing, they always make others happy, in addition to make them happy. In Sundaram’s teachings meaning beauty it will be able to make others happy and peaceful. It is also the teaching of yadnya (sincere sacrifice). Peacefulness makes them not quarrel, fight but strengthen friendship. Moreover, the teachings of Karmic law limit them from doing arbitrarily. They realize if doing wrong and doing not good, they will get punishment from friends according to mutual agreement. Therefore a child will not dare to hurt his friend. Because, if he is hurt will also feel the same. It is in accordance with the teaching of tat tvam asi. The real application of Hinduism is the Tri Kaya Parisuda teaching, meaning think good, say good and do goodness. After performing

the games, they uphold the values of honesty, though not told before. “It happens due to the influence of creative culture of children’s minds, especially through religious teaching,” he added. According to Prof. Sudiana, traditional games in Bali are inspired by the teachings of Hinduism interpreted innocently by children. The games can be inspired by ritual activities, and so can the games into activity. For example, a ritual activity of sesuwunan (sanctified effigies) can then become a game such as in the mebarongbarongan (barong-like game), and mengunying-ngunyingan. On the contrary, a game can become a ritual procession, like the making of barong bangkung (boar) that can become sesuwunan because it passes through trance process. Nevertheless, playing traditional games is not a form of offering, but an activity to fulfill the desire to interact with other children, relieve stress and saturation as well as grow creativity. More importantly, children can learn in their own environment. “Children of the past made the natural surroundings into a medium of their game. Certainly it is from the results of their creativity, not consumptive like many children do in the current era,” he explained. (BTN/015)

When the alert level of Mount Agung was increased to warning, Ngurah Rai Airport was once closed starting Monday (Nov 27) at 07:15 until Wednesday (Nov. 29) and Agung Mirah re-opened that day started at 15:00. “At that time, we help guests that cannot go home because of the closing of Ngurah Rai Airport to find a bus with destination to Surabaya. From Surabaya, they are going to Jakarta from Jakarta they can fly home,” she said. Foreign tourists that must go home by overland, said Agung Mirah, amounted to 10 people. Among them, there are guests from Norway, Brisbane, Melbourne and New Zealand. For guests wishing to extend their stay at hotel was assisted by providing discounted rate. “However, today no one comes home by overland as the airport has already opened and even has started to be normal,” he added. Agung Mirah added the natural disaster in the form of eruption of Mount Agung affected the room occupancy of Legian Village Hotel. Currently, the room occupancy only reaches 48 percent, be still lower than the impact of the airport closure. Moreover, many guests made reservation but they suddenly cancelled. “We can exempt the cancellation due to force majeure (unforeseen circumstances / disaster),” she said resignedly. According to Agung Mirah, guests will likely reschedule the arrival until they get a flight to Bali. “Many repeater guests sent emails to ask information about our situation at the hotel. They promised to come back again,” she concluded. (BTN/015)

Meanwhile, the Head of PKP Bangli, Wayan Sukartana, said the experiment of melon cultivation in Subak Uma Anyar with the type of Okasa F1 is considered suitable with the soil conditions in the local subak. He hoped the melon cultivation this time can be followed by farmers in the southern Bangli region where the paddy fields are experiencing water crisis, while the land having enough water availability is certainly intensified for rice cultivation. In addition to melon, the PKP has developed onion on water-deprive land in a number of subak areas in Tembuku and Bangli subdistrict. The result is unlike the onion produced in the area of Songan, Kintamani.

You’re accusing of this agency that does not work, the other agency does not respond to public complaints and so forth. Well, when the streets are empty and you can drive on highway so comfortably, free from congestion, no pain in ears hearing the honking horn sounded as others want to, you also complain. You still protest and expose it through social media. On the contrary, when the streets are deserted, no tourists passing and tourist attractions are quiet just like on Nyepi (Day of Silence) and really silent, you also complain as no income obtained. Bali’s economy is fragile and we are threatened as you describe it. When congestion occurs, you protest. When the condition is quiet and peaceful, you remain to complain. Actually, what do you want? It is an expression in social media responding to the flurry of opinion in various social media related to Mount Agung eruption and its impact on Bali tourism. Well, what do you want? Almighty. There are scenarios we do not suspect. However, please be confident, it surely empties out to goodness for mankind. We are just given a moment for introspection, for contemplation about the essence of life. Have we done it well and correctly? Have we been grateful enough for all the blessings and endowments bestowed by the Almighty? When many flights are cancelled and the airport is closed due to Mount Agung eruption, almost all tourism people shout. It is noisy and very excited. Okay, we have suffered losses? Previously, we have acquired lot of profits, haven’t we? Do not we too much demand and complain, we just complain and condemn circumstances when they do not side with us? Please be remembered, the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963 did leave many victims. But keep in mind, this volcanic phenomenon also makes fertile soil and materials such as sand and stone that can be used for building materials. From there, almost all the materials of infrastructure and hotel development in Bali today are obtained. In Hinduism, there is a teaching known as Sad Ripu. Sad means’ six’ and Ripu means’ enemy.’ They are six enemies in human beings to be fought, namely kama means ‘lust’ or ‘desire’; lobha (greed), krodha (anger), moha (confusion), mada (drunk) and matsarya (envy). Symbolically, these six enemies are eliminated in the tooth filing ceremony (metatah or mepandes). It is performed on children either men or women that physically have been entering their adolescence. At the ceremony, the six teeth are symbolically honed so that the six enemies within human being would get eliminated. However, as the nature of human implies, the enemies do not necessarily vanish after the tooth filing ceremony is held. There are still many temptations faced in living this life among the society. Once again, what do we actually want? B N

Indeed, there is a decrease in the number of visits due to the impact of Mount Agung eruption. Mitigation effort has been discussed in the Bali Tourism Board. Besides, the Mount Agung eruption will also be discussed with the Ministry of Tourism. “As scheduled, Tourism Minister Arief Yahya will be present in Denpasar, precisely at the Bali Tourism Board,” she said. Dezire said that some tourists visit including some large groups postponed their visit to the city of Denpasar. Besides, the tourists wishing to leave Denpasar via Ngurah Rai Airport also delayed. In appropriate with the data of the Denpasar Tourism Office related to the development of tourists staying in Denpasar city in 2016, domestic and foreign tourists totally amounted to 625,431 people. Meanwhile, up to October 2017, the number of tourists that stayed

in Denpasar reached 246,106 people, showing a decrease of 60 percent. “We hope this condition to recover soon and tourism in Denpasar city can return to normal,” she hoped. Meanwhile, the Head of Denpasar Social Services, Made Mertajaya, said that Denpasar municipality is ready for eruption disaster of Mount Agung. The measures having been taken are equal to the previous refugee handling while remaining to make evaluation in each existing post. o-one knows the name of this small wooden boat, even if it had one, or what brought it to the area. The wreck is actually named for the anchor that still lies about 6-8M from the surface. You follow the anchor chain down the steep slope to the flattened remains of the shipwreck (35-50M), which lie across about 60M of sand. This is the deepest dive site, we believe that the good visibility and calm conditions mean that it will present no problems to experienced divers. Following the anchor chain down to 32M, there is a second (coral-covered) anchor at the point where the site becomes a sand slope. It is here that you see the first parts of the wreck, dark against the white sand. Across the site you will find copper sheeting and bottles, the boat’s cargo (artefacts, not for souvenirs). There are still some parts of the boat which remain out of the sand, and which are covered in gorgonians, a sure sign of little or no currents at the site. The wall to the west, at 5-10M, is rich with many overhangs, cracks and caves. A good idea for an extended safety stop after this dive. BTN

Indeed, there is a decrease in the number of visits due to the impact of Mount Agung eruption. Mitigation effort has been discussed in the Bali Tourism Board.

BTN

ctually, what do you want? When traffic jam occurs everywhere, you complain and even emulate through social media. Blame on this party, that party and others. B N

(BTN/015)

processed as above and then eaten with the family. Gonda plants are very close to farmers’ life in Bali, especially farmers in Tabanan, right in Ole hamlet, Marga Dauh Puri, Marga subdistrict. This type of plant is actually a weed plant, but taken advantage by farmers as a daily food. It is planted on the sidelines of paddy plants (by intercropping), so it does not require a large area. Harvest time is also very short namely about 2025 days. The color is green. It does not need to be sprayed with chemicals, so the gonda is free from chemicals.

akepung or buffalo race tradition in Jembrana district has increased from year to year. It can be seen from the number of participants. In addition to buffalo race using cart and doing competition in dry circuits, an increasing number of participants also happens to the Makepung Lampit (using plow and taking place in wet circuit).

M

“We want this tradition to be preserved, especially in the younger generation so they also know the cultural attractions of Jembrana,” said Regent Artha. ati Temple is nestled within the area of Pengambengan village, about four kilometers south of the town of Negara, Jembrana.
