Jati Temple at Pengambengan Village ati Temple is nestled within the area of Pengambengan village, about four kilometers south of the town of Negara, Jembrana. The temple spreading across an area of approximately 4,700 square meters is one of the dang khayangan temples (used to venerate a Hindu sage) in Jembrana. As the name implies, this temple has distinctiveness where teak trees grow inside the temple area. This temple is also closely related to the pilgrimage of Dang Hyang Nirartha on the Island of Bali. In the innermost courtyard for worship lie an oblation pavilion, gamelan pavilion, piasan pavilion and a chamber to store cloth paraphernalia. Four teak trees grow in the temple area. According to many of supporting devotee chief, Ketut Astika Jaya, the teak trees had distinctiveness. Aside from prohibited from taking the teak seedlings, the branches of trees belonging to hundreds of years old never toppled over the padmasana shrine underneath. The branch broke itself into ashes and did not topple over the padmasana shrine. Around the spring, there were four teak trees growing close to one another. Once upon a time, one of the trees bent and almost toppled over the temple compound wall. Devotees originally worried if it would touch the wall, but after a few months the tree could stand upright by itself. “In addition, after several years, the distance of the padmasana shrine to the teak trees was once only a few centimeters, but now has gone farther up to two meters away. Formerly, the temple priest should lean his body when passing, but now he can pass freely,” he explained. In the middle courtyard lay a resting pavilion, grand entrance gates, apit lawang, tower of wooden split drum (kulkul) and kitchen. Meanwhile, in the outermost courtyard lay the wantilan hall and quite ample parking lot. The temple also got assistance from the regent of Jembrana used to build a fence around the temple area and split gates. In the next five years, the innermost courtyard of the temple would be restored because some parts of the temple had been fragile. Other than on the piodalan or temple a n n i v e r s a r y, the temple supported by four customary villages in the Negara subdistrict was also visited by many pilgrims on full moon. Those pilgrims were dominated by teenagers and students who wanted to have purificatory rite or malukat. Similarly, myriad of pilgrims also came to worship on Sarasvati Day. pepelik pavilion, Sri Sedana, representation of Ulun Danu Temple, taksu, chamber to store sanctified effigies and anglurah shrine. The four customary villages supporting the temple were the Tegal Badeng Kauh, Tegal Badeng Kangin, Lelateng and Puseh Agung (Tengah hamlet). This temple was closely associated with Dang Hyang Nirartha as well as two other dang khayangan temples in Jembrana, namely the Perancak and Mertasari. He dropped in at the temple after arriving at Perancak (Dang Khayangan Perancak) and at Mertasari village (Amerthasari Temple). At that time, it was a barren area called Awen and posed a swamp and forest area. During the pilgrimage, he had unwound there and did meditation. Before meditating, he had stuck his stick in a pile and when unplugged it grew into teak trees. In one of the teak tree cavities lay an endless spring. Unsurprisingly, this traditional sport drew appreciation and extraordinary adrenaline. It is more challenging and needs prime energy and carefulness in thinking of beating their rivals. Obviously, the challenge is far more different from the tug-ofwar on grass. The atmosphere became more interesting when the whole body of the players was covered in mud. Their hair, face to other parts of the body was filled with mud. For newcomers, it is really a very interesting attraction when taking action to drag the rope and avoid the sprinkle of mud. New Year 2017, Tanah Lot Thronged by Visitors E

ntering the New Year 2017, Tanah Lot tourist attraction remained to become a favorite destination for domestic and foreign travelers. They spent their New Year’s holiday at the attraction. From the morning, travelers thronged the object located at Beraban village, Kediri, Tabanan, with a total visit reaching 24,882 people a day. Operations Manager of Tanah Lot, I Ketut Toya Adnyana, said that until the year-end 2016 the total tourist visit reached 3,525,335 people. It increased from 2015 which only reached 3,179,617 people. “It means the tourist visit in 2016 showed an increase of 11 percent compared to total visit in 2015,” said Toya Adnyana, Sunday (Jan. 1). Operations Manager of Tanah Lot tourist attraction, I Ketut Toya Adnyana, when met at his office said that he is still optimistic about the increase in tourist arrival from year to year. “We are optimistic that the number of tourist arrival Tanah Lot will always increase every year. We try as much as possible in terms of service extended to travelers,” he said. In addition, the management always tries to maintain the comfort and safety of visitors when making

All manuscripts mainly palm-leaf manuscripts, the Vedas, religious literature and books as source of knowledge are consecrated and given the offerings. By and large, books are consecrated on satvika time when the sun rises. At that time, the atmosphere is very calm and sunny.

In the meantime, rajasika time (noon, turbulent time) and tamasika time (evening, time of dimmer) are considered not good. “Goddess Saraswati is symbolized as a very beautiful and charming goddess. Sapuh leger itself, she added, is a ritual based on the Hinduism in Bali functioned as a self-purification for those who were born in wuku wayang. In the belief of the Hindus in Bali, those born in the wuku wayang are considered in spiritually impure condition. “Sapuh leger is to keep them away from catastrophe, bad luck or misfortune,” she added. The ritual activity of sapuh leger and mebayuh oton has become a regular program organized by the Siwa Murti Bali education center. They are similar to the mass tooth filing and psychical healing. “This program must be carried out to give the attention and kindness to Regent of Tabanan, Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, attended the mass sapuh leger and people in Bangli district and Bali as mebayuh oton at outermost courtyard of Ulun Danu Batur Temple, Kintamani, Bangli a whole,” she said. This traditional makotekan ‘war’ is performed by the hundreds of men –aged 13 to 60 of Munggu village. Before the event begins, everyone prayers together at the local temple. The men and the wood that they will carry are then sprinkled with holy water. Men who recently had a family member die

The traditional event itself consists of the men forming two circles and then holding the 3.5 meter long pieces of wood in such a way as to form a mountain shape. One young man from each team then climbs to the top of the ‘mountain’. The two mountains are then brought towards one and other and the two young men who are standing on the the pinnacles of the wood mountains then battle each other. Even though this is quite dangerous, and many have fallen from the ‘mountain tops’, everyone still very much enjoys seeing several young men try to climb to the top. It is also believed that this traditional activity wards off various types of disasters as some time ago the villagers stopped performing the makotekan and disaster subsequently struck the village. They have continued to perform this tradition ever since then.

This traditional ‘war’ is related to the agricultural life of Kapal Village as is performed as an expression of gratitude to God for the abundant harvest. The tipat-bantal war is centered around the Desa and Puseh Temples of Kapal. Here, Tipat (diamond-shaped glutenous rice patty wrapped in pleated pandanus leaf) are interpreted as a symbol of feminine energy (pradhana) while bantal (same contents in an elongated shape) symbolize masculine energy (purusha) and both represent mother

However, its location is not exactly near the roadside, but visitors must go about 500 meters to the west. It is hidden in the middle of rice fields and on the edge of a tranquil river. Here, visitors can witness the enchanting beauty of gorges and green canyon with a very peaceful situation because it is located at some distance from the main roads. Many of the men engaged in battle are shirtless though they all wear customary clothing (headscarf, sarong and selempot ). Although the rice patties must be thrown northward and southward, some of the participants will ignorantly throw the tipat-bantal at those watching the spectacle,

but everyone seems happy and excited about the whole thing. Interestingly, despite being hit rather hard by the tipat-bantal, no one is ever injured and in fact those who are struck laugh vivaciously. , The war lasts for about 30 minutes and ends with the ‘warriors’ shaking hands in forgiveness and everyone clearing the area of rice patty debris with many people taking home bits of the ‘shrapnel’ to disperse in the moors and paddy fields.

end, central government makes cooperation with the government of Buleleng in doing massive clean-up against the weeds and sedimentation in 2017. This was stated by the Head of the Buleleng Environment Agency (BLH), Nyoman Surya Temaja, on Monday (Dec. 26). The onslaught of weeds on the lake located in the Sukasada subdistrict has becomes a classic spectacle. If seeing the function as the KSPN, the authority of management lies in the central government through the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. However, since the lake is geographically located in the district of Buleleng, the local government has a concern for the solution of

a number of issues, where one of which is the cleanup of the weeds. Since the implementation of the festival in 2014, Nyoman Surya Temaja has made coordination with provincial and central government in carrying out the cleanup. He said that the cleanup is handled on by 20 contract workers who also work as a fisherman. “We coordinate the handling of the sedimentation with technical agencies in the district. So far, the existing equipment does not support but in 2017 the central government will bring in a ranger. This equipment is bigger,” he said. The arrangement of the lake area will not only be focused on the handling of weeds and waste, but also on the other infrastructure such as the embankment and

he Indonesia Institute of the Art and Culture (ISBI) of Tanah Papua presented unique and creative yearend performances and an exhibition on December 10th, 2016. Inspired by ISBI Tanah Papua’s rector had the inspiration for a creative col-

laboration involving ISBI Tanah Papua students, Papuan artists, lecturers from the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar and Balinese artists. The art collaboration involved the artisitc creativity of 50 artists and 200 students from ISBI Tanah

Papua and reflected the diversity of Indonesia. The venue for the performance and exhibition was IBI Papua campus that was thronged with spectators consisting of sturdents, lecturers and the general public, who enjoyed the event that took place Satruday afternoon and evening. The art exhibition and performances resulted from two weeks of workshops that highlighted five artisitc disciplines; art, craft, dance, msic and visual communication design. The workshops included explorations into video script writing, dane, make-up and fashion, as well as tradtional art techiniques and local materials. BTN/kmb

The craft workshop featured the creation of birds of paradice sculptures made from local materials. The visual communications design workshops were focused on screen priting and web design. There was also a Papuan music composition workshop as well as instructional design for lecturers and a proposal writing workshop. “This workshops were based on output, so the lecture material covered over the year was put to use in this collaborative effort for the ISBI Papua’s presentation to the public in this year end event”, explained the Rector of ISBI Tanah Papua, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Rai S. Tourism Office Inspects Tourism Industry in Denpasar

he Denpasar Tourism Office made public its work programs and also conducted site inspections of hotels, restaurants, and entertainment and recreation venues on Wednesday (Dec. 21) in order to asses whether the City of Denpasar’s tourism industry was ready to welcome Christmas and New Year and to establish closer relationships with industry players. The inspections were led by the Head of the Denpasar Tourism Office, Wayan Gunawan, himself. The hotels visited included the Puri Maharani, Sri Phala Resort & Spa, McD Sanur, Platinum Executive Club, Akasaka, Executive Disco, Pizza Hut and the Ibis Hotel. Gunawan said that that the visits to these places yielded positive responses from tourism industry managers. “We regularly hold such inspections in the City of Denpasar as a way to evaluate how well the government of Denpasar is developing sustain-

able tourism”, said Gunawan. Gunawan explained efforts made by the municipal government to promote tourism include the launching of Denfest by the Ministry of Tourism in Jakarta, the launching of the Denpasar calendar of events, giving out tourism information as well as visits to tourist sites in Denpasar. Greening Monkey Forest Ubud by Planting 121 Trees

onkey Forest Tourist Attraction in Ubud, conducted a greening activity by planting 121 trees, in the eastern portion of Monkey Forest Sanctuary –an expanded area of the attraction. “It is a form of devotion to God to implementing harmonious relations with the natural environment,” said chief of Padang Tegal customary village, Made Gandra, on Tuesday (Dec. 20) The new area covers 8.5 hectares, but only 2-3 hectares will used for buildings and parking. The remaining area is being planted with trees. “Formerly, the

land area of Monkey Forest was only 15.5 hectares, and there were 678 monkeys. But as the monkeys proliferate larger area of forest was needed, so we expanded the area by another 8 and half hectares”, explained Gandra. Bank BRI contributed the 121 trees that consist of 11 different species including durian, lychee, champak and java olive trees. According to Bank BRI, the number of trees planted represented the bank’s 121st anniversary. The tree planting was carried out by the Gianyar Public Works Agency with Nyoman Nuadi representing

Then, the management did rebranding to increase the types of Indonesian authentic food that offers fish and shrimp menus. “From the concept of selling value, fish and shrimp menus distinguish ours from other restaurants. Here, shrimp and carp are really fresh,” said Gede. Since the rebranding, the Bale Udang did not only add to Balinese menus, but also Balinese ornament. Bamboo and pond remain to be maintained, but coupled with Balinese ornament. In addition to the outlet in Kuta, Bale Udang also opened its branch in Ubud in 2014. “Hopefully, in 2017 we could open in Jimbaran and Jakarta with the concept of Bale Udang. Between Kuta and Ubud is just different in terms of location,” he explained. Indeed, the Bale Udang Kuta has the most extensive acreage. The parking area can accommodate 80-100 cars. It is equipped with a meeting room, so that it is ready to host a meeting event. Besides, it will build a meeting room with a capacity of 100 -150 persons. “Next year, we hope that Bale Udang could become a pilot project as the center for culinary adventure.
