That’s what makes the difference in the Wapa di Ume different from other resorts. Wapa di Ume has a principle in its management which is maintaining harmonious relationship between man and man, man and nature as well as man and God. This is known as Tri Hita Karana concept. Atmosphere of the resort is more comfortable and peaceful. Vibration feels strong because around it grows local plants having the functions as traditional medicine and for offerings to God. Among them, there are betel, jackfruit, ivory coconut, pomelo, frangipani, gardenia and other local and rare plants. “Since the establishment, it has been designed with traditional Balinese nuance being close to nature in accordance with the concept of Tri Hita Karana,” said Marketing Manager, Nyoman Trida Sena Karilo. such as pork roasted ribs, grilled chicken and other delicacies. Sari Profit Rafting takes start in Begawan area, Payangan subdistrict and finishes in Kedewatan area of Ubud. Manager and the owner. Once tried, surely it will get addicted. Aside from offering beautiful nature and best services, it is also very unique. Sari Profit

Rafting is very characteristic with checkered attribute signifying the rwa bhineda (dualistic concept) that cannot be separated such as good and bad, day and night, up and down and others. “Sari Profit Rafting has a breath of Balinese people who are always close to yadnya (sincere sacrifice),” he added. In the morning, before doing any activity is begun with doing yadnya (sacrifice), so the spirit can really be perceived by visitors. As a Balinese man who believes in God, he must also respect His creations existing in the river. It is asking for safety, permission and apologies for borrowing the area to be a place of human activity. “Sari Profit has the meaning of seeking a little profit that can be useful for people, empowering local communities,” he explained. This man born in Kedewatan on September 21, 1971, admitted to provide rafting tourist attraction by accident. From his childhood, he lives on the bank of the Ayung River while herding cattle. He and the other kids were used to playing in the river. Then, there was an entrepreneur who brought a rubber boat to Ayung River around 1989. “I was surprised to see it. Understandably, I am a villager and have never seen it. I then tried to find out what the tourist really did. In fact, it is called rafting,” he said. Without being realized, the development of rafting continues to grow better. More and more domestic and foreign tourists are taking this tourist attraction. After completing his education in Denpasar, he then went home to establish a rafting business. “I am a Balinese and native to Kedewatan, why I should be afraid to establish rafting business, outsiders just dare to do so,” said this Chairman of Gahawisri Gianyar. Suwarka has knowledge in the business and knows the characteristic of Ayung River, so he is interested to try his fortune because he

does not want to be a spectator in his own region. “So, I established a rafting company named Sari Profit Rafting with the meaning of seeking a little profit, but it can be use-

ful for people (empowering local people),” he explained while adding that his customers are mostly Chinese guests. B N (BTN/015)

They are BUMDes coached by local government such as Celepuk Coffee of Jatiluwih, Sri Sedana of Munduk Temu, Batu Sari of Batungsel, Tugu Sari of Pajahan, and BUMDes Pujungan. Besides, it is meant to introduce the art and culture of the region in collaboration with modern visualization. In addition, it serves as promotional program to place Tanah Lot as The World’s Most Iconic Place as well as to promote typical cuisines of Tabanan as a sustainable tourism companion. He added that Tanah Lot is one of the main tourist destinations in Tabanan district. The beauty of the coastal scenery and mystical charm of Tanah Lot Temple has placed this as a tourist attraction with the highest number of visits in Bali. Throughout 2016 and 2017, the number of visits has exceeded 3 million visitors. However, in 2017 the number of visits decreased by 0.78 percent when compared to tourist visit in 2016. This happened due

to the influence of the Mount Agung eruption which impacted on the closing of the airport and cancellation of several flights flying to Bali. “It is recognizing the existing conditions and as one of the measures for the recovery of Bali tourism in general and Tabanan in particular,” he concluded. asi Campur or mixed rice is one of the favorites offered by Casa Luna Restaurant in Ubud. Mixed rice of Casa Luna Restaurant is definitely different. The taste and way of presentation is typical, delicious and really traditional. All the menus are pro-

is carried out manually as our local ancestors did. For example, the spices are ground by hand on mortar and pestle and the coconut milk is very fresh (from freshly split coconut) and does not use flavoring, Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) and modern preservatives. All the uniqueness distinguishes it from the others, so that mixed rice at Casa Luna Restaurant becomes the most favorite menu within the past 25 years. Casa Luna Restaurant managed by Dewi DeNeefe Suardana really features typical Balinese taste. On that account, the menus are very simple, but offer a distinctive flavor. One serving of mixed rice is served with chickpea vegetable in coconut milk, corn fritters, twisted satay, chicken curry, steamed red beans in banana leaf, pickles and raw condiment. “We are still focused on the authentic taste,” said Dewi DeNeefe. This mixed rice is combined with other foods whose preparation is different such as being steamed, fried, boiled, grilled and freshly made manually, such as pickles and chili sauce. Afterward, the rice is served neatly and beautifully in the form of cone. Rice is put right in the middle, surrounded by other menus. “Some ingredients are also taken from our garden,” she said proudly. A portion of mixed rice a la

Other than at Casa Luna Restaurant, the twisted satay menu is also served at Indus Restaurant. “We make spices manually and without using flavoring,” she said. In the past, the twisted satay was using ingredients such as chicken or pork because it was made as an offering for the ancestor or God in ceremonies like mecaru (exorcism rite). Now, this kind of satay is sold as one of the food menus. Moreover, in strategic locations such as the tourist attraction, the corner of the city and traditional markets, it is very easy to find satay merchants. Hotels, restaurants and food stalls usually offer this twisted satay. However, the ingredient used is the form of sea fish such as snapper, tuna and others. It’s called twisted satay because the meat of the satay is not skewed, but finely panned and then twisted around the stalk. Besides, the stalk of the satay is different or larger and rectangular. The stalk is made from dry bamboo or re(BTN/015) fined coconut bark.

Casa Luna Restaurant is very popular among local people, domestic and foreign tourists. The mixed rice is usually ordered from lunch to dinner hours. Each portion is sold for IDR 60,000. “In addition to Casa Luna Restaurant, the same mixed rice is also served at Indus Restaurant. The menu must be available,” said Dewi DeNeefe. This creative woman added that in terms of taste the mixed rice

is appropriate for everyone’s appetite, both for local people and tourists. This happens because it has a very accurate mixture, not too bland or not too spicy. “This mixed rice is commonplace. However, we intentionally feature it to introduce the traditional menu to international community. Therefore, we prepare it based on our secret recipes,”he concluded. (BTN/015)

Prof. Dr. I Nengah Duija said that pakelem or mapakelem ceremony is one of the ways carried out by the Hindu community in Bali in appreciating to water including the water of the lake. Manifestation of God revered in the lake is Goddess Danu, the

goddess of water posing a culture of water for human life. “In the purana manuscript, Goddess Danu emits water to the entire Bali from nearest to distant regions,” he said. Since people believe to have the god of water, they have special treatment to the goddess. As a matter of fact, there are stages of ritual performed by Hindu community, ranging from the smallest to the largest ones. All the stages should be done because they are integrated. “When paddy fields have vanished, it means there is a missing step,” said I Nengah Duija But more importantly, explained Prof. Duija, in keeping the water it must be balanced with the maintenance of forest as the buffer of water. Therefore, no matter how grandiose the ritual performed is, without being balanced with real action in keeping the forest it will be in vain. Philosophically, there is a strength performed in managing water, and at the same time the forests should also be maintained. “If we maintain Goddess Danu, the forests are also maintained,” he added. The ritual performed by the Hindus in maintaining the forest is wana kertih ceremony,

The sound of splashing water, small birds and grasshoppers coupled with remote atmosphere provide a natural ambience for visitors. Aside from having the potential waterfalls and Lake Tamblingan, Munduk village is also rich in other potentials such as cloves and coffee plantations and fruits such as citrus and flower plantations. Meanwhile, its exotic terraced rice fields are very popular among visitors for trekking.

Once entering the front side of the village, the whole house is designed in such a way towering upwards to follow the contours of the hill that looks very enchanting. Although the technological advances have been spreading to the village life, the traditional life such as language, culture and ceremonies remains visible at this village. A number of international archaeologists have been taking the time to visit this ancient village.

The philosophy is the guiding light by which the staff members carry out their work, and through which the organisation expresses itself. The ARMA Foundation in Bali, Indonesia, was established in 1996 to promote and preserve Balinese art and culture. The Foundation is the administrative arm for a complex that includes a world class museum, a center for visual and performing arts including a dance and music Sanggar, or informal school. Hundreds of children, teenagers and adults have benefited from the ARMA Sanggar, which ARMA makes available without cost to local families. Many of these children have gone on to perform in their communities as skilled

dancers and musicians. But now the continuation of the ARMA Sanggar program is under serious pressure, due to the declining income from donations of tourists. No fee is charged to local people attending a cultural workshop organized by the ARMA Museum, as the ARMA Foundation was created to support and preserve the Balinese culture. Recent events have threatened the continuation of the traditional art forms. The shift within the Balinese society from an agrarian to an industrial livelihood was swift enough to make visible the lack of support for the arts. Globalization has brought a change in art making from one of balanced spiritual offering towards the basis for a wage system. Other factors include a lack of enduring documentation about traditional dance and music, and the significant loss of master teachers through age and passing. B N (BTN/015)

Black Roasted Suckling Pig, Have You Ever Tried?

BTN/kmb

oodies of Balinese delicacies have certainly been familiar with the name of the roasted suckling pig. One of the culinary centers of roasted suckling pig can be found in Kerambitan subdistrict, Tabanan. Unfortunately, to date the basic ingredient of this roasted suckling pig is not the black Bali pig posing typical Balinese pig. Most culinary entrepreneurs tend to prefer landrace due to faster harvest whereas the taste is much different. What are the steps of preservation of the black Balinese pig suspected of getting rarer?. Black pig (local pig of Bali) is provided with organic feed, so the texture of the meat is very chewy. Indeed, it requires longer raising

F

period than landrace pigs. Unfortunately this black pig is now getting very rare, even almost extinct. The desire to preserve Balinese black pig population eventually emerged from the Kerambitan sub-district head, I Gede Sukanada. He wanted in the Kerambitan Festival IV to be held next October; the cuisine of Balinese black pig can be enjoyed by foodies of roasted suckling pig in particular. “Earlier, we invite a number of foodies of roasted suckling pig to enjoy the taste of black pork that we name free event,” said I Gede Sukanada amid the event of black roasted suckling pig at Mandung hamlet, Sembung Gede, Kerambitan, Sunday (Apr. 8). Through this event he would

like to get some inputs so the taste of black roasted suckling pig can be accepted by the tongue of foodies. The efforts to preserve Balinese black pigs will be initiated by giving black piglets to the poor whose funding source is supported by UPK funds (formerly PNPM). “Next month, we are going to launch black pig breeding to the poor and the piglets are ready,” he explained. Provision of Balinese pig breeding in May is expected to support the Kerambitan Festival IV to be held in October. “On the one hand, we give the piglets. After growing bigger, we plan to make a bazaar in October that will serve the black Balinese roasted suckling pig. Meanwhile, the benefits of this activity will be allocated for the conservation of Tyto Alba owl population at Timpag village,” he said. As understood, Timpag village keeps trying to maintain the population of Tyto Alba owls. The owl is taken advantage to prevent the occurrence of rodent pests. Indeed it is very good. Besides, it does not harm the natural potential, and can overcome the pest attack of rats with owls. At the same time, it also maintains the balance of nature itself. One of the most urgent things is the intention to build the home to the owl breeding because this owl is not proficient in looking for a place to stay. BTN (BTN/kmb)

Data on the arrival of cruise ships in Celukan Bawang Harbor from 2017 ago indicated there are seven times. From the arrivals, the number of foreign tourist visit to Buleleng is recorded to reach 9,690 people with 5,911 crews. From the arrival of the cruise ship, it transports 9,770 passengers and 7,642 crews. The cruise ship arrival is almost adjacent throughout last January where during which was recorded to reach three times of arrival. Two other arrivals occurred last March, and this month is scheduled to return another cruise ship that will lean in Celukan Bawang Harbor. Since being visited by cruise ships, the Buleleng Tourism Office with tourism players coalesced into the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Buleleng facilitated thousands of tourists boarding in the cruise ships. While facilitating cruise ship passengers, the tourism office and PHRI offer tour packages to passengers for a visit to major destinations in North Bali. In addition to preparing accommodation and tour packages, the tourism office and tourism players in this region gave speech to passengers or ship crews that were leaning in North Bali. This greeting was done by displaying traditional arts and interspersed with the introduction to the potential tourist attraction of Buleleng.

Head of the Buleleng Tourism Office, Nyoman Sutrisna, said that all this time the cruise ships stopping by in the Celukan Bawang Harbor was not more than a day. This happens due to consideration of tourism agent and ship crews having not sold a tour package in Buleleng for more than a day. However, Sutrisna admitted that Celukan Bawang Harbor is increasingly known as a stopover for cruise ships. Certainly it is a positive progress to develop the tourism industry in the region. Moreover, the visit of thousands of tourists only lasting for one day has given a multiplier effect to tourism players. They consist of transportation, restaurant and souvenir shops in some tourist destinations included in the tour packages when receiving cruise ship guests. “Starting in 2017 and now the intensity of cruise ship arrivals have been increasing. From the arrival of previous ships, there are many impacts received by tourism players in our region. In the future, we are confident to be able to realize the development of cruise ship harbor in West Buleleng,” he explained. (BTN/kmb)

Penaka hamlet, Tampaksiring, Gianyar, has become the center of bone crafts. The village located very close to Gunung Kawi tourist attraction has made the small industries thrive. Their production is always increasing because they do not only target local market, but also foreign travelers coming in person or placing an order via email. amlet chief of Penaka, I Nyoman Ardika, said that bone craft has flourished since the beginning of the 1990s. Three people become the pioneers and they are categorized into successful bone craftsmen namely I Gede Ardika, Wayan Jiwa and Rupawan. The bone material consists of buffalo head and the horn. “There is also material specially imported from Mexico, the United States and Russia in the form of wood fossils having been thousands of years named amber. This material is processed into a unique craft favored by foreign travelers,” he said. According to him, currently the bone crafts are still demanded by foreign travelers. This condition encourages residents of Penaka to get involved in the profession as craftsman. Despite having been a farmer or employee, they can still make bone craft as a side job. “This bone craft has a good prospect, so that it can help the local economy,” he said. However, he continued, the current sluggish world economic condition also has an impact on the declining production of his bone crafts. ianyar has the most and complete tourist objects on the Island of Bali. If detailed, there are totally 61 objects consisting of cultural, natural, coastal, recreation, market and palace objects. “Some are fully managed by customary village, in collaboration of customary village with the government and subak organization as well as by customary village and subak organization only,” said the Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office, A.A. Bagus Ari Brahmanta. Agung Brahmanta said that customary village is expected to manage the existing tourist attraction in the area, so that it can make a community-based tourism, namely a tourism development that can prosper the people, create job opportunities and reduce poverty. “We at the Tourism Office facilitate it through a provision of coaching for the destination,” he said. According to this man from

G

Ubud, destinations can provide development points and multiplier effects for other sectors. Therefore, the Gianyar government encourages every village to have interesting attractions and destinations, so that it can give development to the community. “In the development process, there are certainly many challenges that must be passed through,” he said. Firstly, he said it is the challenge in human resources that must move. There must be people and public figures with capabilities that can drive tourism in accordance with the existing standards. Then, there must be a management, so the government remains to provide education. Thirdly, each destination should comply with the standard quality. “If they have been met, it is resumed with the development of branding,” he said. On that account, among the 61 existing tourist objects he said only 50 percent has been well

managed. Currently, his office is working on cultural heritages that have not owned branding yet such as Mengening, Goa Garba and Tegallinggah. Meanwhile, those that have owned branding are Tirta Empul, Gunung Kawi, Goa Gajah and Samuan Tiga. “We continuously refer to the development of existing tourism

at the national and international levels, so that excel in competitiveness,” he determined. Related to cultural heritage development, his office will do by degrees because the destination has something to do with infrastructure. In addition, the Tourism Office will build digital destination. So, the cultural information center will be built in Samuan Tiga equipped with a diorama. “Samuan Tiga has a very strong history related to the emergence of the customary village,” he said. In Samuan Tiga will be built an information center in digital platform according to the current needs, but does not reduce the history. The diorama made will have a cinema telling about the life of Balinese people. There is a historical journey of Rishi Markandeya up to these days along with the reviews about Balinese culture. “There is also a digital cultural information center,” he

said. Currently, he continued, many tourists access digital information. In Gianyar, more tourists visit artificial recreation park and culture heritages. “In the future, we will build a tourism village as well. Almost all the villages in Gianyar have superior potential, but they must record first the advantages whether it is culture, nature or the possibility to build accommodation, restaurant or other. We are still doing the mapping,” he replied. For instance, Taro is a special destination for spiritual tourism while Kendran is designed to be a green and cultural destination that prioritizes the unification of the environment and culture within a village. “To be honest, based on the typology of villages in Gianyar, all have characteristics, so that it can become a unique and superior tourist destination,” he hoped. Upon presentation, Mr. Peter Arya, in his capacity as joint owner of the three properties said, “It is indeed a great honour to be recognized by Travelife as this certification reinforces our long-term commitment to sustainability. Previously, the Penaka hamlet was famous for its coconut shell craft. “Of the approximately 700 residents, 80 percent of them have profession as bone craftsmen, while the remaining residents are

Then in the 1980s they got involved in timber crafts and starting in the 1990s bone craft began to be introduced. After that, it is processed as desired (bracelets, necklaces and rings), then carved, sandpaper, polished and resumed with finishing. If the product is an order of customer, having been finished it will be sent directly to customer. Otherwise, it will be on display at art shop.

(BTN/kmb)

I Made Nengah Yasa Becomes a Star before Guests male figure named I Made Nengah Yasa becomes a star before tourists. Of course, every day he always becomes the object of camera shooting of tourists taking a rest at hotel. “I have set up a special place at Prime Plaza Hotel & Suites Sanur to demonstrate sculpture and pandil. Aside from being intended as cultural attraction, it is also a promotion of the art craft,” he said. This sculptor from Gunung hamlet, Taman, Abiansemal, Badung, said that tourists are very happy with the craft making activity. Before leaving the hotel or after arriving from a promenade, they must take some time to watch the art activities. “When being fortunate, they buy my product immediately,” said Nengah Yasa. However, this father of two sons of Badung-born on May 9, 1974, admitted that not every guest coming to him want to buy his artwork. Many buyers also depend on the development of Bali tourism. “Sometimes, there are almost no buyers. Yesterday afternoon, some tourists including local tourists were interested in my work of

This husband to I Gusti Made Rai Suartini said the art activities he does are carving puppet, guest’s face on wood medium, and making a statue. Face carving on wood is the mostly ordered by guests a holiday memento in Bali. “I am just given their photo and then it takes me three months to accomplish. The work will be taken after they come to Bali again or they ask to dispatch. If they stay longer they will wait for the work,” he said. The price of face carving ranges from IDR 1,000,000 to IDR 1,500,000, depending on the complexity. This type of art is favored by tourists from Europe, Australia, America, Africa and domestic tourists from Jakarta. “In a month, there are always orders, but the

he island of Bali in Indonesia has long been recognized for its many traditional art forms. Music and dance in particular have been celebrated for their contributions to world heritage. He is keenly perceptive of people and the world around him and insightful about the present and the future. He is curious and imaginative; energetic, enthusiastic and spontaneous. He values co-operative efforts and good will. AgungRai’s philosophy doesn’t

only impact on the outside world. This philosophy is well integrated into the whole organisation, and forms the fundamental ideas around which ARMA is built. Agung Rai’s leadership is characterised by his concern not only for the arts, but also for humanity. He is adaptable, seeks harmony and affiliation and his leadership is one of encouragement. AgungRai’s vision has produced not only beautiful buildings, but incredible opportunities for artists, Balinese people of all ages, and people from an all-encompassing diversity of cultures. with their dream. AgungRai’s wife, IbuAgungRaiSuartini, has supported her husband’s vision with her own strong characteristics. She is a driving force in making her husband’s dream sustainable, valuing competence, efficiency and results.

B N (BTN/015)

ihingan village in Banjarangkan subdistrict, Klungkung, is initiated as a tourism village by Klungkung district. It is famous for its gamelan crafts. This home-based business is believed to have existed since the days of the Gelgel Kingdom. Craft products made by gamelan makers have been able to penetrate foreign markets. When entering the village bordering with Klungkung subdistrict, our eyes will see the nature remaining beautiful. Paddy fields still spread quite widely. They are cultivated with vegetables and garden balsam flowers. Row of buildings also looks neat. The front side is equipped with a small garden. The bustle is not too noticeable either despite being a path to a number of villages. A number of front houses are also equipped with a signpost. It shows a place of the making of Balinese gamelan instrument. One of them belongs to Ketut Suena at Tihingan hamlet. As soon as set-

ting foot on a concrete courtyard, the eyes directly point to a set of gamelan placed in one room. The colors look shiny, golden and very bright. Some are also covered in

red clothes so as not to be exposed to dust. In the back of the room, some people are busy cutting bamboo, adjusting to some gamelan blade

in maintaining water, Hindu community in Bali does it physically (sekala) and psychically (niskala). Psychically, it is performed through animal sacrificial ceremony known as pakelem. On that account, this kind of ceremony is usually carried out in the water sources including lakes. Prof.

Consulate General of Australia:

Australia and Bali Have History on Cultural Exchange and Collaboration

Dr. Helena Studdert ustralia and Indonesia, especially Bali, have a history on very powerful cultural exchange and collaboration. It happens because of Bali’s proximity to Australia and its cultural richness. “There is a great deal of exchange, cooperation and collaboration between these two governments, private institutions and people-to-people affairs and cultures,” said Consulate General

of Australia in Bali, Dr. Helena Studdert, in her office. Therefore, explained Helena, Australia provided grants and sponsorship programs to encourage Australian artists to make a visit and performance as well as share experiences with their Indonesian counterparts, even across the Asia-Pacific region.“Australian Consulate-General in Bali is committed to strengthening this relationship. Since I started working in Bali, the Consulate-General in BTN/bud cooperation with the Australian Embassy in Jakarta has sponsored and supported various activities,” she explained. The activities include the collaboration of Australian indigenous Hip Hop groups with young Balinese dancers, artists in the Indonesian-Australian Art Alliance collaborating in mask dance performances, Australian native storytellers telling stories of indigenous Australians with Indonesian and

Balinese storytellers in storytelling sessions with children and workshops for kindergarten teachers, Australian Muslim rapper group performance collaborating with local rap groups, Australian Film Festival as well as workshop in the past two years. asi Campur or mixed rice is one of the favorites offered by Casa Luna Restaurant in Ubud.

A portion of mixed rice a la

and aroma. The twisted satay is served with seafood menu.

(BTN/015)

That’s what makes the difference in the Wapa di Ume different from other resorts. Wapa di Ume has a principle in its management which is maintaining harmonious relationship between man and man, man and nature as well as man and God. This is known as Tri Hita Karana concept. Very beautiful scenery of paddy fields and green river valleys (rainforest) become the main attractive element. live harmoniously side by side, such as birds, butterflies, crickets, dragonflies, frogs and other animals. In a single journey, participants cover a distance of about 11 km within two to three hours. “We have a team and staff with decades of experience serving both domestic and foreign tourists. We handle group of companies, school groups and individuals,” said I Wayan Suwarka, Operations
