Bartender Profession Becomes Trend

rofesion of a bartender is now becoming a trend. The interested people are just like running water that continues to increase. Vocational schools having tourism majors, for instance, always ask for the Association of Indonesian Bartenders (ABI) to become teachers. “We always send ABI members to become bar instructor at schools. It is on the request of the schools,” said Chairman of ABI Bali, Ketut Darmayasa. Based on the data, Darmayasa explained that currently the interest of young people to be a bartender is quite high. It can be seen in every competition where the participants are always booming. “In addition to being creative in mixing drinks, they are also skilled in doing juggling. It is a part of skills and concentration practice,” said this Food & Beverage Director of Grand Istana Rama. Bali local bartender has superior capability and quality. When participating in competition both in national and international level, they always appear as the winner. “Bali bartenders have always been a priority because they have passed the standard of competence. Therefore, professionally Bali is not left behind if compared to other regions,” said this alumnus of Certified Hospitality Trainer (CHT) of the American Hotel Lodging & Education International (AHLEI) in 2016. Darmayasa said that the competence of a bartender has three indicators. Firstly, he must have the expertise of a bartender showed in playing bottles and mixing drinks. Secondly, they have English proficiency and mastery in bar material. Thirdly, he should have good behavior. “Whatever one’s ability is, he or she must have good behavior. Otherwise, they cannot become a competent bartender,” he said. This man from Singaraja then invited all the bartenders to follow competent certification because Indonesia including Bali has been participating in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) policy since January 1, 2016, so that there is a provision that every profession should be certified. “Every profession, including bartenders, is obliged to be competent, so that they can compete in the international world,” he said.

pem taluh or egg-based muffin is not a traditional cake of Hindu community in Bali. However, this plump and tender cake always embellishes all kinds of offerings presented to God Almighty. Even, Balinese people consider it incomplete when their offering does not contain this cake. It is called apem taluh because it is mainly made from taluh (egg). This cake is also commonly called ruti kukus because it is made by steaming. Another name is apem kopyok as the making uses spiral shaker. In harmony with the change of times, Balinese people then do it by using a mixer. This cake is classified into a delicious one. Kids really like

it best because it tastes sweet. Meanwhile, others say if the cake tastes better after being presented to God. In other words, they believe to have got a grace from the Creator. Nevertheless, it is not a cake consumed every day but only made for the needs of ceremony. In the past, this cake was classified into a very fancy cake because the ingredients and tool used to make it were quite expensive. Only the rich could afford it. So, do not be surprised if the prani offerings of the rich in the past were often becoming a spectacle because the offerings contained apem taluh and assorted fruits. Right now, the time has changed and almost everyone can afford it, so both large and small ceremo-

nies have used it. Then, to get the apem taluh is also very easy. Traditional markets, pastry shops and supermarkets have sold it these days. However, they may offer different flavors because the makers may add to non stomach-friendly coloring agent just to make it look brighter. Meanwhile, some other makers may apply excessive food preservatives so that it will be durable and it certainly has an impact on the unpleasant flavor. If it is made from the common ingredients such as without preservatives or without non-food coloring agent, the cake will last for about three days. This cake is made from some ingredients such as 1 kg of flour, 10 chicken eggs, 1 kg of sugar and 600 ml of carbonated water (to taste). How to prepare it? First of all, prepare a container and then put the sugar as well as crack the eggs into the container. After that, mix them for about 20 minutes. Next, give some water, stir continuously until the sugar can completely get dissolved. Put wheat flour and stir until getting well blended. Prepare a pan with boiling water. Ultimately, prepare the dough to be put into a mold and then steam them for about 10 minutes. Well, take them out and it is ready to be served. (BTN/015)

Equalization of Tourism Development, Tabanan Focuses on Tourism Village he development of tourist accommodation is currently focused on Badung. Investors are still eyeing Badung as a strategic location in terms of investment for tourism development, in this case the tourist accommodation like hotel. Construction of hotels more focused on Badung must certainly be reviewed again because many negative things can occur due to population density, environmental damage and the limited source of water. Deputy Regent of Tabanan, Komang Gede Sanjaya, argued on Friday (May 12) that in terms of tourism development there should be equality in Bali. The equity certainly raises many positive things where one of them is economic equity. “This equity can also suppress the number of congestion occurred all this time,” he said. Tabanan itself has the potential in terms of building tourist accommodation like hotel because it has tourist destinations having been well known to domestic and international travelers. Though having the potential, added Sanjaya, the government will further focus on the development of accommodation by more optimizing the role of society and the importance of environment such as tourism village concept, eco-tourism and environment-based tourism. Admittedly, investors are still competing to invest in Badung in terms of accommodation development. Nevertheless, Sanjaya continued that Tabanan will not insist on attracting investors to Tabanan to build tourist accommodation. According to him, the district government prioritized investors that focus on the development of tourism villages and apply environmental tourism. “In essence, Tabanan is more focused on tourism featuring natural charms,” he concluded. grandchild. However, this tradition remains often to be carried out at villages such as at Rendang in Karangasem. Ni Wayan Logég, a great grandmother who is staying healthy and having a great grandchild, said that at Rendang village, Karangasem and the surrounding areas, the ngampin tradition is still often carried out. This tradition is carried out by touching the baby using betel leaves and betel nuts. The nail of the baby’s thumb are smeared with the betel stalk bite of great grandmother and ended by provision of banknote to her great-grandson (great grand-child). “This tradition is implemented when meeting first time with great grandchildren,” she said. Similar opinion was revealed by Ni Madé Gerot, one of the elderly residents from Tegal village, Rendang, Karangasem. After touching with betel leaves, the great-grandmother often gives money to her great-grandchild. According to Ni Madé Gerot, giving

money is similar to giving provision to descendants and propriety of parents to their children. “This tradition means to remember each other and pray for each other so as to reach longevity. In addition to expressing gratitude for the birth of great grandchild, it is also meant to strengthen the sense of kinship,” she said. Community believes that by implementing this ngampin tradition, hopefully the great grandmother (kumpi lingsir) and great grandchild (kumpi alit) equally could have longevity. In addition, this tradition is also aimed that the newborn grandson will not get miseries in living the life. From the execution of this tradition, the elders remind their offspring so that families could remember one another and know one another. This ngampin tradition is one of the ways for parents to strengthen brotherhood. It is advisable to always undertake this tradition even though it looks unimportant but really meaningful. (BTN/uma)

Aside from offering durians, since several years ago Sudaji has been known as a tourism village. According to the Chief of the Sudaji tourism village, Gede Suharsana, the village was inaugurated as a tourism village by the regent of Buleleng last May 5. Though newly inaugurated, the village has initiated and pioneered a tour package since 2008. This tourism village is managed by local tourism awareness group (Pokdarwis) inaugurated by customary village in 2012. He said that establishment of the tourism village passed through a long process, inseparable from the mapping of the potential owned. The concept introduced and highlighted is the local wisdom with the Tri Hita Karana (three causes of happiness). Nagasepaha Glass Painting Has Appeared Since 1927

ainting puppet on glass is still occupied by a number of artists of Nagasepaha village, Buleleng district. This rather complex painting is believed to have appeared since 1927, during the colonial era. Nagasepaha village is located not far from the center of Singaraja town. The nature is still beautiful. Paddy fields are still stretched. Rural atmosphere looks very pristine. Local community is not entirely concerned with the agrarian sector. Some of them still pursue the profession as a puppet painter on glass. In addition to be made into livelihood to earn sustenance, this skill is also a way to satisfy the art desires owned. The residents getting involved in this elaborate painting reach dozens. Most of them have been old. In harmony with the passage of times, the regeneration is still ongoing. One of the painters, Kadek Suradi, told that in accordance with the story amid the community this painting first appeared in 1927, made by a sculptor named Jero

sities and colleges throughout Indonesia. On that occasion was also formed a consortium for vocational program with full support from the IHGMA. At that time, Reza Sunardi was appointed as the representative of the IHGMA to realize the program together with the government. The event was continued with welcome dinner at Trans Studio Makassar with the presentation of typical entertainment of Makassar City as well as the inauguration of the IHGMA administrators for Makassar Chapter. Dalang Diah. It originated from the presence of a rich man carrying glass painting from Japan featuring Japanese women. At that time, Dalang Diah was offered to make a similar painting with puppet as the object. “Dalang Diah accepted the challenge, but the painting from Japan has to be sacrificed so that the paint is directly eroded to know the technique of making it. Thankfully, he succeeded in making the painting,” he said. Since then, his painting skills have been transmitted to his family and the people around him and still survive until now. “This painting has become a hallmark of Buleleng, no longer just for Nagasepaha,” he said. The glass painting of this village is very unique. Strokes of Chinese ink and oil paint look neat and detailed. Unlike the canvas painting that begins from the front, the glass painting starts from

the rear. When wishing to fill in script ornament, the writing is not from left to right, but vice versa. “Puppet of Buleleng style has a distinctive character where it puts on many clothes,” said Suradi. The specificity, said this man graduated from junior high school, has been able to lure painting lovers to buy. Some have ordered far in advance. Interestingly, his work draws the interests by renowned artists to be used as collections. “So far, we still have buyers of the painting, but lack of orders within the past three months. Now, we have changed the marketing strategy so as to still keep going,” he explained. The selling price of this painting varies depending on the complexity. “Even though the painting has big size, if it is not complicated, the price is cheaper. On the contrary, if the painting is small but complicated, it can be more expensive,” he added. (BTN/kmb)

He is very aware that working in hospitality field is to promote services because it is selling services. “Managing hotel is the same as managing a hospital, where its security should be kept for 24 hours,” said Karta who has work experience in one of the hotels in Sulawesi. In addition, the man who started his career as receptionist said that customers have already known that choosing cheap goods has definitely different quality from the more expensive goods. “Honestly, I’ve never got bothered with the competition and tariff war happened lately. usa Dua area is famous for its prestigious five-star hotel facilities. This area is really managed professionally by the government of Badung. Other than offering luxurious hotels, this area also has a beach resort that is not less beautiful, namely the Segara Samuh Beach. It is located right behind of Hotel Bali Tropic Resort till Club Med. Visitors often call it by the name of Nusa Dua Beach because the beach lies in Nusa Dua area. Samuh Beach presents nature attraction in the form of beautiful sunrise like that on Sanur Beach area. This beach is very friendly to children because it has little

waves. Sometimes there are no waves at all, so that many tourists allow their kids to play freely on this beach. If the sea water is receding, we can have a promenade as far as 100 m to the middle of the sea. Seeing the marine animals trapped in the puddles of seawater will add to the sensation of visitors to this Samuh Beach. From this Segara Samuh Beach, we can see the green Island of Nusa Dharma. On this island, visitors can explore the track on foot or by cycling. For those who like surfing can go in as far as 200 meters from the beach to get suitable waves. Those who like diving or snorkeling can try it on this beach. There is an underwater park named the Bali Underwater Cultural Park (BUCP) located about 500 meters from the Samuh Beach at a depth of 11 meters from sea level. BUCP contains a collection of artificial reefs in the form of statues of dancer such as statues of Kecak Dance performance and characters of the Ramayana epic like Rama and

Sita. The BUCP is intended to do conservation for the sake of marine biodiversity and Balinese culture. In addition to increasing the value of the arts, the statue also serves as a medium to grow new natural coral, so that the conservation of coral reef will be well preserved. Other than for the growth of coral reef, this statue also becomes the home to various fish, a new attraction of marine tourism objects as well as tourist destination promotion caring about the preservation of culture and environment. If visitors want to enjoy the beauty of the underwater, the submarine or snorkeling facilities. Fishing boats are available to take to the middle of the sea. They can be rented on Mengiat Beach whose location is not far from the Samuh Beach. Not far from Segara Samuh Beach, there is a small island named the Peninsula Island which is famous for its water blow object (the waves hits the rocks and create the towering sparks). On this island, there is also jogging track like that in Nusa Dharma Island. Aside from enjoying the beautiful water blow, visitors can also try this track that directly leads to water blow. The Samuh Beach tourism object has been equipped with spacious parking area, boat rental, bathroom / toilet, resting place and restaurant offering various menus.

The monument is easily recognizable by the large kayongan (tree of life) that represents the world and its contents. The lower part of the monument has a carved inscription of the names and country of origin all those who died in the tragedy for which this monument was erected. The tragic incident took place on Saturday night, October 12, 2002 when a bomb went off killing 202 people from 22 different countries and seriously injured another 324 people This incident is commonly referred to as ‘Bali Bomb 1’. It was Nyoman Rudana who first had the idea to erect a monument at the location of the bombing in memory of those who perished. The monument was finished the following year (2003) and was originally named “Five continent monument”. A year later the Regent of Badung inaugurated the site when it was given the official name “Monument to the Humanitarian Tragedy of the October 12, 2002 Bombing”, but the monument has since come to be known as ‘Ground Zero’. Ground Zero continues to provide positive inspiration to all

Tangkup Showers Believed to Cure Non-Medical and Mental Illness angkup waterfall object sits at Undisan Kelod hamlet, Undisan, Tembuku, Bangli. The waterfall with a height of approximately

20 meters flows from five springs namely the Kibul, Besi, Belatuk, Pasucian Bathara Pucak Sari and Getar. Aside from offering amazing panorama at the surrounding areas, the two showers at this waterfall are also believed to have capability of healing non-medical illness and mental disorder. Both showers are located adjacent to each other under the waterfall. Uniquely, a shower exudes warm water, while another exude cool water. By and large, water of these showers are taken advantage to hold purificatory rite by visitors. An attendant of the Tangkup waterfall object, I Wayan Gentos, said that the waterfall object has two showers named as the dasa mala shower (used to purify ten impurities) and tamba shower (used to cure mental disorder). According to Gentos, there

have been many people, chiefly those suffering particular illnesses, come to hold purificatory rite at the showers. Some of them could get their recovery after that. “Formerly, a local resident suffering mental disorder was given purificatory rite here. Now, he has got his recovery and is back to normal. Since then, the shower on the left side is believed to help cure mental disorder. Conversely, the right shower can help cure non-medical diseases after holding purificatory rite here,” he said. Nevertheless, this man born in 1943 does not dare to ensure that all people holding malukat or purificatory rite coming with various complaints of diseases can be entirely cured. Surely it will go back to each individual. “In essence, we should have a confidence. If we have, we will get recovered. On the

contrary, if we are less confident or pessimistic we may not get recovery. This has something to do with confidence,” he said. He explained that people wishing to perform the purificatory rite will usually bring along the

Vague Memories, Theme of Exhibition at Griya Santrian Gallery

Padang, West Sumatra

Past memories whether they are good, bitter, or painful must be beautiful if expressed through the media of art, let alone be processed with expressive creativity. These are the works of art presented by the artist I.B. Putu Purwa at Griya Santrian Gallery, Sanur. This solo exhibition features a total of 11 works taking place from May 19 to June 30, 2017.

I

da Bagus Purwa presents a series of works during the period of one year from the beginning to the end of 2016. Most of the works come in dark nuances showing off his interaction as an artist in engaging with creative ideas largely stimulated by his objective reality. There are also some works having been stimulated by the objective reality outside of it. All the works are expression of the artists experiencing the condition. He no longer remembers some of the unique incidents experienced during his childhood with friends told when having chats. Similarly, he does not remember the motorcycle used when attending college where one of his friends was impressed by it and has an interesting story. Many more vague memories are left as if darkened by the fogs of his mind but still remembered by most of his friends. In this context, Gus Purwa is interested in elaborating the real-

Melody, technique, rhythm, game of tempo to the motion and expression of the players are well ordered, so that it becomes a very sweet art presentation. It is the action of academic artists denoting the students and lecturers of the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar at the opening of the Badung Marine Festival on Friday (May 19). A total of 250 artists that showed off the work of art entitled Ketug Bumi with the play of various types of traditional music. jembe music instrument (Africa). It sounded heavy, but gave a sense of peace. The composition of Ketug Bumi is usually displayed at the opening of the Bali Arts Festival (BAF). “The art composition of Ketug Bumi featured the theme ‘I Love the Sea’ adapted to the meaning of the festival. It is usually presented in the BAF, but now presented in this festival. Besides, the theme raised is also different because there is a good cooperation between the ISI Denpasar and government of Badung district,” said the coach I Ketut Garwa, who is also Deputy Rector IV of the ISI Denpasar. It tells about the figure of the king of the sea Lord Varuna who provides advice for the community to participate in preserving the sea. Sustainable sea will be

useful for human life. An interesting point for the audience is the display of the marine atmosphere with various types of marine life such as turtles, fish, shrimp and more. Beauty of the sea is visualized in the form of artwork, so that it encourages human consciousness of how great the sea connecting the lands across Indonesia is. The staging has a meaning to invite everyone to maintain the tradition having become the local wisdom of Balinese culture. Moreover, it also presented a collaboration of the arts with other regions and even other countries, so that the message delivered is more appropriate. “We show off the best by involving the entire elements of the ISI Denpasar academic community,” said Ketut Garwa. ity within himself and his social life. Technical choices presenting visuals dominated by dark and disguised in the shades of visualization are visual language to tell memories as a record of events that continue to coincide despite being disguised and hard to remember. The figure with rangda or barong mask, for example, in somewhat disguised in the background is filled with the scenes of sexuality relief. Gus Purwa explored these issues of spirituality

where he lives in the context of an over-acting era; the current spirituality has been polluted through a mindset that refers to a fashionable one. Rangda or barong mask represents a verbal symbol of Balinese spirituality, something sacred while the human body as an icon of contemporary society and erotic backgrounds associate the mind filled with memory of lusts. The contrast of social behavior in spirituality tends to be disguised to maintain self-image. B N (BTN/015)

o you still want to die in Bali? This rather ‘rude’ question is actually meant to tease foreign friends, who once wanted to go to Bali. If possible, they wanted to die in Bali. Due to being very much love Bali, they even want to breathe their last in Bali. Indeed Bali, at least at that time, remained quite pristine, either in the form of their culture, nature and way of life and so on. In short, ancient Bali is very different from the current Bali that is so ‘modern.’ Behavior of the people as well as their culture have begun to get contaminated, the potential of nature has been degraded and so forth. On the one hand, many people are still maintaining their customs, culture and Hinduism strongly and even very strongly. The aroma of ancient Balinese life indeed remains to exist, even though it has been adapted here and there so that it may be quite difficult to be seen how exactly the real process of its appearance. However, Bali actually has indeed changed both in terms of cultural and social order. Currently, other than living, dying is difficult in Bali. Perhaps, this is a bit exaggerated but this expression may be true as well. In terms of economic perspective, life is difficult with standard reference that is surely different from the ancient one. The burden of community life has certainly increased. It has not only increased by itself but there are also people deliberately ‘choosing’ such an increase. If there are people saying that

customs and cultures become powerful variables in the increase of life’s burden, it is not wrong. However, do not make mistake, customs and culture provide an option about how to undergo it so that it does not become a burden. That’s why if we do it in accordance with the rules of custom, culture and religion, certainly it will not be difficult and not become a burden. It is the society having ‘chosen’ so that it becomes a burden. For example, there are levels of ceremony namely small level (nista), medium level (madya) and high level (uttama). There is freedom to choose one of them and must be adjusted to the socioeconomic conditions of society. There are options and no coercion to choose. Performing the ritual or sacrifice is even without coercion. Sincerity is the key. It’s in the life time. To die, in many cases he said while joking, is also difficult. There are rules to be obeyed. Family should not only bear the cost, but there are also local village regulations (perarem) that must be obeyed. Cremation or burial, for instance, cannot be held any time. There are auspicious and bad days and Balinese names it the ‘ala ayuning dewasa.’ There are other things that should also be understood and obeyed. On that account, when there are members of the community who die today, they cannot necessarily be brought to funeral home. This must be first informed to the elders whether it is allowed or not. If possible, there must be a deadline how long the corpse can be allowed to be at home before being buried or cremated. Otherwise, many people currently leave the corpse at hospital mortuary. This certainly needs a cost. It can last for a week or even for months. Is this considered difficult? Maybe yes. Is there any way out? Of course, there is. Currently there has been crematorium to cremate bodies that are not subject to the rules of the local customary village. Now, it depends on the family to look for the auspicious day and it will cost them less. Do you still say that life and death in Bali is difficult? Maybe yes, but actually Bali has provided various ways and many things for us to survive. As long as we love this island and take care of it well, Bali will definitely be sustainable. B N

Chairman of the Public Community for Coastal Area and Supervisory Group of Bondalem, Nyoman Sugiartha, revealed that the making of this marine park has been done since several years ago. It has been intensified since the past few months. Interestingly, the making of the park is not only done by planting reef on the existing coral, but also equipped with statue of dancers drowned into the sea. “Some time ago, statues of dancers and gamelan have been drowned,” he said. In addition to the statue of dancers, in the near future it will also be done the drowning of a number of concrete in the form of stupa. It will also be accompanied with the planting of coral reef to welcome the Buleleng Bali Dive Festival event that will take place in coming months. The making of this park poses a form of conservation and support to marine tourism in the form of diving recently began to develop. Tourist visits have been classified to be significant. “It is mainly intended for conservation,” he said. The man who is adept at diving added that the making of this park is only constrained by bad weather condition. As for the government’s attention, there is no problem. “It is only constrained by weather, more on nature’s conditions. The government has already given the attention,” he added. In the meantime, the Head of the Buleleng Tourism Office, Nyoman Sutrisna, said that the making of the park becomes one of the ways to equalize marine tourism in Buleleng district. well as the ministry of cooperatives and small and medium enterprises (KUMKM). Selection of Ubud for the venue of the inauguration is based on consideration that it is an appropriate pilot for the development of tourism villages in Indonesia. Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, said that Bali has a feature with a myriad of international reputations. Bali becomes the most complete 3A destination namely the Attraction, Access and Amenities. “In the world of tourism, there are three main attractions sought after by tourists, namely cultural, natural and manmade (artificial) attraction. Cultural tourism still holds 52 percent of the world tourism activities,” he said. In Indonesia, cultural tourism plays higher role to bring in foreign tourists, namely as much as 60 percent. Based on these data, the position of Bali is still very strong in presenting cultural tourism in Indonesia. “Bali still maintains its ancestral tradition. Ubud is one of the areas that synergize to build the region while strengthening local traditions and culture,” he added. Minister of Village, Disadvantaged Area Development and Transmigration (DPDTT), Eko Putro Sandjojo, said that his visit to the Fourth Ubud Royal Weekend is an effort to get input from Ubud to cluster villages. Ubud is famous for its tourist destinations, so that it needs to get inputs of tourism focus to be developed. “I

want to get input about the focus of tourism and the needs. Later on, we collect 16 related ministries, businesspeople and banking sector to know what they can help,” said Eko Putro Sadjojo. Meanwhile, Minister of Cooperatives and the MSMEs, AAGN Puspayoga, also supported the success of tourism village in Indonesia. His ministry wanted to complement from the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector. According to him, the MSMEs will be able to be appropriate when combined with tourism villages. “We have one village, one product program. Establishment of tourism villages will greatly assist the marketing process of various MSMEs,” explained Puspayoga. Chairman of Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Bali, Tjokorda Artha Ardhana Sukawati, said that all tourisms have their own market. The market based on the origin of the country such as Europe, China, America and Australia certainly has different hobby as well as the market based on purchasing power of tourists, consisting of high, medium and cheap level. “When

Preservation of berko traditional art in Jembrana

This bamboo-based gamelan instrument that adopts the gong of East Bali, experienced its heyday in 1925-1935. ne of the old and rare arts that remains hidJEMBRANA den in Jembrana is known as berko. This Bull-racing Center bamboo-based gamelan instrument that adopts the gong of East Bali, experienced its heyday in 1925-1935. As with the other more famous arts from Jembrana like Jegog and Makepung, the emergence of this art is intimately tied to the agrarian culture of this region. This berko art that combines bamboo gamelan and dance had dissapeared after the Japanese occupation and only reemmerged some 20 years ago. This art was first developed in the neighborhood of Dewasana, Pendem village, Jembrana, and was re-constructed in the 1990s during the leadership of Jembrana Regent, Ida Bagus Indugosa. Berko speaks to the simplicity of agrarain society and its closeness to nature. This bamboo gamelan is made from raw materials that used to be easy to find in the area. Berko enthusiast I Wayan Dibia, explained that this unique art form emmerged and flourished in Dewasana Mundukjati, a few years after local senior members of the community had cleared the forest to make room for land cultivation. One of the elders, Pan Muder, spent his spae time siting in his hut making a simple gamelan from bamboo using the durmo scale. Together with his friends, the gamelan was then perfected with the addition of undir on the back, cymbals, drums and flutes. At first glance, it looks like a gong, but it is entirely made of bamboo and the sounds are rather discordant or bero (Balinese). This strange sound is what gave this art form its name: Berko. At first Berko was often played in the fields at night under danyuh (dried coconut leaves) lantern. Later frying pans were filled with oil and a small wick served as th source of light for these night time sessions. Today, these frying pan lanterns are still used during Berko performances. The popularity of berko made its way to the ears of the royal family who invited the troop to perfor. From there the gamelan music started to become accompanied by dancers ressembling the legong and joged bumbung. Each staging consists of two sessions. Firstly, it is known as introductory dance and tributes to the audience and guests named Byar Cebok. It is followed by the second part containing a social dance or known as Byar Gem. Two female dancers appeared in male character. The dance features the storyline of Ramayana with Subali and Sugriwa characters. Before the stage begins, the dancers make an introduction accompanied with gamelan music. Indeed this art had disappeared during the period of physical revolution. Today, this art can still be found at Pancadawa neighborhood, Pendem village. Later on, this art remains to develop at Pendem as re-activated by the Jembrana culture and tourism agency. The agency provides space for the berko artists to perform this art. Head of the Jembrana Culture and Tourism Agency, I Nengah Alit, said that his agency deliberately reconstructs the arts that are almost never performed. A number of cultural and natural potentials at the villages are further explored including at Pendem. BTN

wishing to cluster them, it should be clear, whether the cluster is based on purchasing power or attractiveness,” he said. Ubud especially tends to develop cultural tourism because it has Pakerisan watershed that has the records of Balinese civilization. Definition of the cultural area cluster is that a small scale destination where the local society becomes the main players. “To that end, the development in Ubud should also be controlled and reflect Balinese culture. The control should also be done on the investment of modern

tourism parks,” he said. Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office, Anak Agung Bagus Ari Brahmanta, said that implementation of the Fourth Ubud Royal Weekend 2017 is able to increase the number of tourist visits and length of stay. The increase reached a significant number, namely 15 percent from the previous ones reaching only 150,000 to 300,000 visitors. “Ubud has owned a well-known brand. The tourism village was first initiated by President Joko Widodo on October 15, 2016 at the Sail Karimata Strait in West

Kalimantan. “I have contacted to Mr. Eko Putro Sandjojo, the Minister of Village, Development of Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration (PDDT). I sent the Deputy of Destination and Industry Development, Ministry of Tourism, Dadang Rizky, to follow up the technical matters with Director General of PPMD, Ministry of PDDT, Prof. Dr. Erani, designated as PIC. We will soon determine the quick win which destinations are most ready to be formatted into tourism village,” said Minister of Tourism. In addition to the uniqueness of nature, tourism villages are very rich in cultural appeals and moments of living together with local residents, so that visitors get to know about their lives. This encourages the presence of the idea of fast and precise procurement of the homestay in accordance with the potential

of Indonesia. Additionally, homestay has become a new service business opportunity gateway. These opportunities are followed by other businesses such as vehicle rentals, culinary services, parking services, tour guide services, laundry services and typical souvenirs. All these opportunities require human resources, so that the homestay is considered as a business being capable of opening vacancies by itself. Implementation of the Indonesian tourism, in accordance with the agenda of the ministry of tourism, consists of 3A namely ‘attraction, access and amenities.’ All these three elements are implemented by involving coordination for tourism promotion, human resources, facilities and infrastructure. As the second point of the top three priorities of the ministry of tourism of Indonesia, homestay of tourism village plays a significant role in increasing the growth of tourist visits to Indonesia. In short, homestays have low-cost tourism concept using archipelagic architecture with the development plan for 6 (six) months. BTN (BTN/kmb)

ade are the ornamented struc-

The bade of royal descendants and others can sometimes reach several meters high and are elaborately ornamented. Bade are carried in a ceremonial processions and at every crossroad the bade is turned in circles three times so that the sprit of the deceased becomes disoriented and cannot return to haunt the living. Even the simplest bade are quite large and require several men to carry them on a bamboo frame. During the ceremonial procession, a long white cloth is suspended in front of the bade as a symbol of the road to heaven.

Currently, it is only focused on Pemuteran, West Buleleng. “With this park, the visit will be evenly distributed as well as the impact on the community, not only in the west,” he said. He conveyed that the interest of travelers to enjoy diving is large enough. The breakthrough made by Bondalem residents is considered very strategic for tourism development in the future. “Tourist visit is already crowded. well as the ministry of cooperatives and small and medium enterprises (KUMKM).

Chairman of Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Bali, Tjokorda Artha Ardhana Sukawati, said that all tourisms have their own market.

My Lovely Bali

Business and Leisure

May 26 - June 8, 2017

o you still want to die in Bali?

In this context, Gus Purwa is interested in elaborating the real-

jembe music instrument (Africa).

B N (BTN/015)

usa Dua area is famous for its prestigious five-star hotel facilities.

He explained that people wishing to perform the purificatory rite will usually bring along the

elated to traditions often practiced in Hinduism, either in each family, village or district, it has its own characteristics. As in the Balinese nomenclature, a person who has get married will certainly have children, then have grandchildren,

great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and the next descendant according to the Balinese family nomenclature. Various traditions are held to remember the family order. One of them is through tradition of giving betel leaves with betel nut or better

known as the tradition of ngampin kumpi by great-grandmother (kumpi lingsir) to its great grandchild (kumpi alit). This tradition is very rarely implemented and even many people do not know because currently it is rare for parents who live longer to even have a great

Where To Go . . .

(BTN/uma)

Now, it depends on each region to pack and present the potential at hand to tourists. One of the villages developing the potential with the characteristic owned is Sudaji village in Sawan subdistrict, Buleleng. Habitable homes of residents are taken advantage as an accommodation as well as a place to interact for tourists. His group also introduces typical cuisines to visiting guests, not Western food. Not only that, in the span of a few years Sudaji tourism village has been capable of present-

The local river remaining natural with a fairly heavy flow can be used for rafting adventure. This rafting tour is considered as the first one in North Bali. However, his group is still constrained

(BTN/kmb)

rofesion of a bartender is now becoming a trend.

(BTN/015)

However, many bartenders are still scattered in each district and municipality in Bali. “In the near future, we will get all the bartenders in Bali,” he added. (BTN/015)
