He added the Tirta Penglukatan Taman Campuan is believed to be able to cure all kinds of “nonmedical” diseases. This conviction came to him after his father was affected by a poison. After being given holy water from Taman Campuan, the toxins left his fathers body through the anus and he was able to make a full recovery. Since then, people believe that this spring can cure “nonmedical” diseases. “However being cured is inseparable form having a strong foundation based on faith and selfconfidence. Many people come to these springs to do purificatory rites on particular days such as on the full moon, new moon and kajeng kliwon (auspicious day when five and seven day calendars align in particular way). People must bring along pejati and canang oblations. The visiting pilgrims usually come from Bangli or other districts in Bali. Since the place is sanctified, he asks that the pilgrims who come here to do purificatory rites maintain positive thought and words. Brief History of Bali. Banyu Pinaruh, Mass Purificatory Rite and Turtle Hatchling Release housans of people dominated by students performed Banyu Pinaruh mass ritual named Baruna Astawa and the release of turtle hatchlings on Yeh Gangga Beach, Sudimara village, Tabanan, on Sunday (Aug. 20). The event initiated by the Daksa Dharma Sadhu Alliance (PDDS) was officiated over by five Brahmin priests and attended by Deputy Regent of Tabanan, I Komang Gede Sanjaya. After the activity, Deputy Regent Sanjaya had the opportunity to release 372 turtle hatchlings with the members of Tabanan House of Representatives, head of fishery agency and participants of the mass purificatory rite. The release of 372 heads of turtle hatchlings into their native habitat was related to the 72nd anniversary of the Indonesia’s Independence Day as well as the nature conservation effort. “On this auspicious day, we release 372 turtle hatchlings. The figure 372 is related to the seventy-second anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia. This is one of environmental conservation efforts as well as the turtle hatchling release into their native habitat,” he said. Deputy Regent Komang Sanjaya said that as religious people Banyu Pinaruh is not only a discourse at school, but the people must also understand about the meaning of Saraswati and Banyu Pinaruh in accordance with its essence and practice. “With this ritual, we are together purifying ourselves, the heart and mind, getting closer to God, doing sincere sacrifice, either individually or collectively,” he said. In terms of the meaning of feast day, the ritual to motorcycles, cars or working equipment is more appropriately carried out on Tumpek Kuningan, namely as a thanks giving for the facility gift of Supreme God. Hopefully, the facilities can help the activities and function well and safely. Tumpek Landep poses a milestone for introspection to improve the character pursuant to religious teachings. On Tumpek Landep, devotees should do worship in family shrine as well as in temple to invoke the blessing of Lord Shiva Pasupati to

Other than brown rice, currently local people are working their native coffee inherited through generations named as Celepuk Coffee (celepuk means ‘owl’ in Balinese). “We deliberately choose a memorable name because local people have a habit of drinking coffee up to three times a day. As a result, people’s eyes are strong to awake until morning,” said the headman of Jatiluwih, I Nengah Kartika, recently. Interestingly, this Celepuk Coffee is made from a mixture of red rice that makes the taste of coffee more viscous and deli-

cious. However, this local coffee cannot yet penetrate outside market because it has not been processed and packaged optimally. Moreover, the coffee land is still scattered in the moor owned by respective resident. Hopefully, in the future the local coffee can be developed by our BUMDes,” he added. Uluwatu Temple, also called Luwur Temple, is one of the six Sad Kahyangan Temples, the main spiritual pillars in Bali Island. There are two different opinions concerning the history of Uluwatu Temple. First Opinions, Some people believe that the temple was built by Empu Kuturan in 9th

AD, during Marakata’s reign. Second Opinions, Other people claim that the temple was built by Dang Hyang Nirartha, a pedanda (Hindu monk) from Daha Kingdom (Kediri) in East Java. Dang Hyang Nirartha came to Bali in 1546 AD, during the reign of Dalem Waturenggong. The monk built Uluwatu Temple on Pecatu Hill. After completing a spiritual journey around Bali, the monk went back to Uluwatu Temple and died there. He moksa (died and his body vanished), leaving the Marcapada (worldly life) and entering Swargaloka (heaven). The Piodalan or ceremony commemorating the temple’s anniversary is held on Anggara Kasih day, in wuku Medangsia in Caka calendar. Usually the ceremony lasts for three days thronged by of thousands of Hindus. Uluwatu Temple sits on a 70-meter-high cliff protruding above Indonesian Ocean. Because of its unique location, visitors to the temple have to take a long stone stairway to reach it. The temple heads east, unlike other Balinese temples which face west or south. There are hundreds of monkeys

roaming along the path outside the temple. Although the monkeys look tame, visitors find them a nuisance as they often grab food off a visitor’s hand and snatch visitors’ belongings. There are two doors at the end of the path, the north door and the south one, through which visitors enter the temple complex. The entrance doors take the shape of stone Bentar gates. Standing across from each gate, there are two statues of elephant-headed men. The front part of the gate is decorated with fine relief sculpture picturing leaves and flowery patterns. Behind the gate, there are stone steps that lead to the inner court. Along the steps, trees are grown to provide shade. A small forest lies at the front and hundreds of monkeys dwell here. They are believed to guard the temple from bad influences. The serpentine pathway to the temple is fortified by concrete walls on the cliff side. That’s the spirit that conveyed the composition of the work entitled Padma Hrdaya presented by Penggak Men Mersi Cultural House in Ksiraarnawa Hall of Bali Art Center on Wednesday (Jul. 26). Such collaborative art composition reminds the audience to keep harmonizing the greatness of nature, so that it is not damaged. The atmosphere is indeed carried away by the flow of music under the concept maker and choreographer Kadek Wahyudita with music director I Wayan Pacet by involving about 20 creative young artists. Moreover, the flexible movement of the dancers supported by costumes and flooring pattern looked so attractive and the right stage lighting made the art presentation really fascinating. The tones of singapraga gamelan music compose five spirits, namely Prana Yoga, Genta Hrdaya, Budi Satyam, Bhuana Semara and Prabawa Bhuana. At first, it is filled with poetry reading explaining the great universe (the land) whose harmony is now being disrupted. Furthermore, prana yoga describes the figure of a sad king that observes his damaged nature presented through Legong Buwuk Dance by four female dancers. There is an art show of love story (bhawa smara) featuring two male and female dancers, in the contemporary style dance. In final session, the Padma Hrdaya performance is expressed through music (prabawa) without a dance. Combination of singapraga gamelan music is made with djembe, sitar, flute, tingklik, gong and singing. “In the context of this work, Padma Hrdaya is interpreted as an art offering that aims to invite us all to understand the world situation in a metaphysical perspective,” explained Wahyudita. It discussed about the contemporary condition of Ubud that is often complained by tourists and its own citizens. Especially, it is related to the problem of traffic crowdedness. Traffic congestion occurs everywhere. Surely, there is a series of problems needing to be handled quickly and correctly. Turtles become more familiar on Penimbangan Beach ishermen coalesced into the Sari Segara Joint Business Group (KUB) have a lot of concern for the sustainability of the sea turtle population around Panimbangan Beach in Baktiseraga Village, Buleleng. This month alone, they they released hundreds of turtle hatchlings back onto the sea. Previously, on Saturday July 22nd , they released 73 turtle hatchlings. There were 93 eggs that they had been protecting but 20 of them did not hatch. The eggs had been rescued from the dangers of the beach and kept in the breeding basin that the fishermen built with funds from donations. The fishermen are now caring for more than a thousand turtle eggs that had been rescued from the coast since May 2017. Group Leader of Sari Segara, Putu Naca, said the turtle breeding on Penimbangan Beach has been running for a few months. The independent conservation effort is being done by local fishermen who are concerned about the turtles’ natural habitat. Due to the over-hunting of sea turtles, this beach has not seen turtles for some time. However, with the growing concern that the fishermen have shown for the turtles and their habitat, Penimbangan Beach is becoming known for its turtles. The rescue and release of turtles here is expected to contribute to a positive future for the sustainability of this natural turtle habitat. “The combined efforts of our fishermen and other concerned parties have borne good results, as evidenced by the more than a thousand turtle eggs that we have saved and are waiting to see hatch. Some turtle hatchlings have already been released. We are still waiting for the eggs that have not hatched yet so that we can release them all”, he explained. Amid the developing conservation efforts, the fishermen of this area have made the turtle the mascot of Penimbangan Beach and they plan to build a turtle statue at the entrance to the Beach. At that time, native residents were employed by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to help open road access from plantation to nearest harbor. However, the project was hampered by large ficus tree at the temple location. They could not pass because on the left side there is a cliff and a temple in the north side.
