A Cave in Kereban Langit Temple

C12-07

BTN/kmb

ereban Langit Temple is located at Pekandelan hamlet, Sading, Mengwi, Badung. In this temple lies a cave about 15 meters deep. Vug of the cave is large enough so that visitors can feel the sun despite being in the cave as if the cave is open to sky (the word kereb means shade or roof). The word is closely related to the naming of the temple. A spring can be found in the cave believed to be capable of exuding holy water of the Lord Vishnu. However, the spring will flow to the surface very rarely only when the lord deigns. Similarly, another spring also flows from the cave drained to Pancha Rishi shower for panglukatan or purificatory rite. According to temple priest of Kereban Langit, Jero Mangku Sweden, there were no written records on the history of the temple. However, based on the story from the elders, the temple was mentioned to have been named around 923 AD. Establishment of the temple was closely related to the story of the twin kings Masula-Masuli. Once upon a time, the King of Klungkung wishing a child got a guide from deity Toh Langkir to search for tirtha selaka. For that purpose, a priest was then assigned to do it. In his quest, the priest passed around the river located near the cave that is now becoming the Kereban Langit temple. The priest met a hermit from Sading. It was said the hermit had been meditating in the cave for several months. In that encounter, the priest expressed the intention of his journey to the hermit. The hermit then provided him with an instruction to invoke holy water in the cave where he meditated. Having got the holy water, it was then presented to the queen. Unexpectedly, the queen finally could get pregnant. Later, the

queen gave birth to twin children named Sri MasulaSri Masuli. Since the king felt indebted, he then erected a temple in the cave. Later on, the temple was handed over to Mengwi Palace and then to Sading Palace. The structure of Kereban Langit temple is very simple. In the innermost courtyard lie some shrines like the Ratu Gede Lingsir, Ratu Made and Ratu Ayu. In front of the padma (lotus) shrine stand some guard statues and terracotta statues. Meanwhile, a padma shrine lies in the middle courtyard. Then, in the outermost courtyard near the riverside stand the representative shrines such as that of Ida Batara Ratu Gede Dalem Ped and Ida Batara Ratu Bolong. Jero Mangku Sweden said that no shrine was reed or palm fiber roofed. Besides, there was no ceremony in this temple officiated over by high priest because the deities had been Shiva self-manifested. Even, the local temple priest did not use holy bell when leading the ceremony. Then, the piodalan or temple anniversary fell on Buda Cemeng Ukir. B N (BTN/kmb)

Bindu Tourism Village Equipped with Tubing Attraction

Alaya Resort Kuta

An Oasis Coming with Wise Option

o you still remember Bindu village? The tourism village located at Buana Mekar village, Abiansemal, Badung, is now equipped with water attraction such as tubing game. This type of water attraction is relatively new and even has not been officially opened. Nevertheless, many people are intrigued to enjoy this attraction. Local children, for instance, seem to have tried to relieve their curiousness. It passes one of the rivers at Bindu customary village with a distance of about 2 km and can be covered within about 1.5 hours. Though not too wide, this river has swift enough streams. So, it can offer a bit of challenge, but surrounding nature remains pristine and beautiful. “Travelers can see the activities of local village farmers, a variety of local plants and animals,” said a management of tourism awareness group (Pokdarwis), IGN Suastawa.

mid the hustles and bustles of Kuta area having become one of the busy tourist areas in the world, Alaya Resort Kuta, a boutique hotel, offers ultimate hospitality, coolness and excellent service to travelers. The elegant hotel getting a touch of the artist Made Wijaya is able to attract any guests who ever come and then will decide to come again. Surely it becomes a wise decision in the midst of hectic similar offer that does not necessarily meet the expectations. Like an oasis in the desert, the Alaya Resort offers a variety of conveniences and friendly services. “The concept is that we serve with heart,” said Jeffrey Wibisono V, General Manager of the hotel.

For this game, it has been prepared 10 pieces of tubing with super quality. It is started from Subak Gaga and resumed by gliding on the river and finishing at Subak Yeng area, near Bindu village. During the course, unlimited experiences will be obtained to be told to sisters or friends. “The tubing path is indeed sloping so that it is suitable for children and beginners. Playing with a girlfriend or boyfriend will surely be very exciting,” he said. In the meantime, participants of the tubing activities have not been covered by insurance because the track is not too challenging. However, it offers beautiful countryside views and is really clean. Singing of birds or sounds of naughty grasshopper often make people amazed. Grass, green paddy fields and crops belonging to farmers look so fresh and greet every single traveler. Previously, Bindu tourism vil-

lage has opened trekking paths that offers hospitality of rural communities, agriculture and farmers’ activities of Subak Gaga as well as dining delight with local agricultural produce. Besides, the village also has a spiritual tourist spot called Tanah Hyang Healing Center and Herbal Garden. The location with exclusive aura is often taken advantage by travelers to perform meditation, yoga and agnihotra ritual. This Tanah Hyang seems to have healing power. The location is hidden because of sitting behind the people’s settlement. Nevertheless, many people come to invoke healing. Some come after getting information from a medium or getting a clue through a dream. “On certain days, it holds an organic market by involving travelers,” said Suastawa. The Balinese Warung at Tanah Lot warung is an Indonesian term for a small roadside stall that sells snacks, drinks and convenient household items. However, in Tanah Lot a warung is also the local coffee house, corner store and community meeting spot for customer specially guide to sit and exchange the latest news or gossip while they waiting their guest. Every block has at least a dozen warung’s that serve the daily needs of locals and anyone else who happens to pass by. Some warung’s are crude makeshift structures of bamboo and oddments of timber, while others may be a more permanent construction built as an afterthought on the outer perimeter of the family compound. The general setup of a warung is fairly basic, consisting of aged wooden benches for customers to sit upon. Goods are displayed in glass canisters

A

on shelves or spread across large plastic covered tabled that can be wiped down with a damp cloth. Most Balinese warung’s are a chaotic jumble of goods and sometimes even the vendor can’t remember where things are kept. Owning a warung does not really generate a great income as most goods are sold for just a few hundred rupiah above the recommended retail price. But the main benefit for a warung proprietor is that the work is flexible and if it is attached to their home they can go about their other daily household chores in between sales. Opening a small warung is a popular means of employment for married women as they can literally ‘take care of the shop’ whilst suckling a newborn infant or prepare the numerous offerings required for Balinese Hindu ceremonies and rituals. As the Balinese habitually snack

throughout the course of the day, the warung is the ideal spot to satiate one’s appetite with a sweet sticky rice cake and a tall glass of aromatic coffee. Children come to buy cheap candies and imitation soda drinks cooled with chunks of ice. Many warung’s at Tanah Lot provide customers with a small platform-like seat constructed from strips of bamboo and plastic. In an era where shopping malls and trendy cafes have sprung up all over the island, there still remains a place in Balinese

society for the humble warung. For many there is a sense of comfort in sitting at the warung with friends in familiar surroundings that are void of pretentious consumerism. (BTN/015)

''Ogoh-ogoh'', a Medium of Actualizing Art Creativity arading ogoh-ogoh (papier mâché demon) across the customary village or hamlet at the night of Pengerupukan seems to have become a kind of ‘necessity’ for the majority of customary youth clubs (sekaa taruna) in Bali. All the creativities and imaginations as well as funds are dedicated to make the ogoh-ogoh as perfect as possible. Sincerely, sophisticated technology is also applied in the design and construction of the demon statue in order to create dramatic effects as desired by the creator. No matter, the money spent can reach millions or even tens of millions of rupiahs. In this context, the presence of ogohogoh can be positioned as a medium to show off artistic creativity and symbol of prestige because the product is deliberately displayed to general public. Head of the Bali Culture Agency, I Dewa Putu Beratha, said that the ogohogoh parade on Pengerupukan is an expression or artistic creativity to welcome the Caka New Year. This activity is not a part of ritual or it has nothing to do with the Tawur Kasanga ritual. In other words, it is purely an artistic creativity taking advantage of Pengerupukan moment as a medium of actualization. It is a medium to show off the results of creativity to general public. “Considering it is not a part of ritual, so the procession of parading ogoh-ogoh is not a necessity. In other words, without the presence of ogoh-ogoh the essence of

P

Nyepi celebration will not be reduced,” said Beratha to Bali Post on Wednesday (Mar. 15). Beratha added that he has not found any religious literature mandating the Hindus to hold the ogoh-ogoh procession on Pengerupukan. To date, the literatures used as a guideline for the implementation of Nyepi and Tawur (including melasti) are Purana Bali Dwipa and Sundarigama palm-leaf manuscript. None of the manuscripts discuss about the ogoh-ogoh. “So, the excitement of young generation to parade the ogoh-ogoh has no scriptural reference. It purely serves as a medium of actualization for the artistic creativity,” he said. Although having no religious reference, Beratha stated that artistic creativity of young people expressed through the ogoh-ogoh tradition should be accommodated. However, the creativity needs to be directed so as not to move wildly and gets the correct portion. For example, the ogoh-ogoh figure should not be harassing a person or particular group as well as free from any pornographic and other negative natures. “Equally important, the artistic cre-

ativity may not drown the essence of the religious ritual itself. People should not give more emphases on the making of ogoh-ogoh than preparing the series of Nyepi procession along with other accompanying rituals,” he warned. The ogoh-ogoh actualized through artistic creativity is also expressed by chief of Praja Taruna Mahottama customary youth club of Sengguan, Sempidi village, Badung, I Putu Candra Pradhita. In a series of the Nyepi celebration this year, this alumnus of ISI Denpasar along with Mika Raditya, Putu Surata, Edy

Kusuma, Pande Sukarya and Anom is assisted by members of the other customary youth club to design the ogoh-ogoh with the theme of Sesuluh Ulah Aluh. The ogoh-ogoh visualized through the figure of garuda or (eagle) mythical bird, rat and veteran reflects the current condition of the nation that is no longer occupied by the other nations but even by its own people. Indonesia’s diversity is being tested where the strength of the garuda is being combated by troublemaking ‘rats’ that want to dismember the integrity of this nation. (BTN/kmb)

indu community in Bali has a culinary named black sticky rice cake or jaja injin. It is so called because the ingredient is made from black sticky rice. This traditional cake is very nice because the presentation is equipped with grated coconut and brown sugar sauce. Children, teenagers and old people like to savor the cake because it is very easy to find. Children and teenagers commonly enjoy it as refreshment. In contrast to the peasants, they are eating the cake to temporarily retain their hunger after working hard in the rice field. Sitting leisurely while drinking coffee or tea and accompanied with black sticky rice will make the atmosphere very beautiful. According to Grandma Padma, black sticky rice cake was one of the contents that must be present in the oblation of religious rituals, especially for nyatur ritual namely a ritual dedicated to venerate gods in four directions, and nebusin ritual for the person who had died or had an accident. This ritual served as an invocation for forgiveness for any sins

Special, Celebrating Nyepi in Bali

BTN/bud

indu community in Bali celebrates Nyepi or the Caka New Year on Tuesday (Mar. 28). According to the belief of Balinese Hindu, Nyepi is the turn of the Caka Year whose history comes from India. It is said the Kaniska kingdom was first led by a wise king who was very advanced in culture and religion. His golden era was then honored as the turn of the Caka Year started in 78 AD and in Bali is celebrated as Nyepi. Chairman of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) of Bali, Prof. Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Sudiana, stated that the King Kaniska led successfully so that fierce battle among local tribes could be totally ended. It happened because the king led by culture, not by violence. Under his leadership, his people lived

Where To Go . . .

prosperously and peacefully. Ultimately, it is celebrated as the turn of the Caka Year. In Bali, Prof. Sudiana added that prior to the existence of Caka influence from India there has been similar celebration to Nyepi at each village. There was Nyepi Desa specially implemented at particular village after holding a grandiose ritual; Nyepi Segara implemented by fishermen where their members are not allowed to do activities at sea; Nyepi Tegal (in the moor) and Nyepi Carik (in paddy field). “Local Nyepi is intended to provide a space for people to make evaluation and introspection heading for better life in the future,” he said. Nyepi in each location also provides a space for nature to do the rotation in accordance with the plot, and not to be coerced. Since the implementa-

tion of Nyepi was carried out locally, the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) took the philosophy of Caka New Year in India to unite the celebration across Bali starting in 1959 so that it can be celebrated simultaneously. Nevertheless, he added that the implementation of Nyepi could not be made simultaneously like it can be done today. There are important reasons to propose the Nyepi into a national holiday feast. Incidentally there was also a call from the government for each religion to have a national religious holiday. After that, PHDI proposed Nyepi to the government and was accepted and approved by President Soeharto in 1986 as a national holiday. By degrees, PHDI made coordination with religious councils, stakeholders and the communities so that Nyepi can be celebrated as the Hindus do today. “It enables due to the coordination and tolerance of all the Balinese people, not only the Hindus but also other communities. Therefore, Nyepi becomes a special day in Bali and even the world,” he explained. In the celebration of Nyepi in Bali, the entire communities are not allowed to go out, make entertainment, work and start a fire. All the bans are complied with and implemented by Balinese people. People are not riding a motorcycle and car; as well as the flights are even abolished. A variety of entertainments including TV broadcasts are stopped. People light no fire and turn off power. all government and private offices including people’s daily activities are nullified. “These can work due to great tolerance and the values o f Nyepi are universal. Apart from being useful for the people of Bali and Indonesia, it is also for the world, so that the world then adopts it to be a Silent Day,” he added. According to him, Nyepi is not only useful for humans, but also for the entire universe. At the moment of Nyepi, there is no pollution and the whole sky is clean. With the clean sky above, the ozone layer is not eroded. Clean air brings in health to all living beings. Trees also become healthy so that they can contribute to the life of every creature. On that account, Nyepi actually contains a more profound meaning so that the public can make a self-evaluation for their future. The evaluation is done to organize a better life. No fire means that people can control their passions. Celebration of Nyepi is commenced by implementation of melasti where pilgrims come together and carry all the symbols of God’s manifestation to the sea to take holy water of life and dispose of impurities and stains.

Then, mecaru tawur signifies the attention to the existence of the negative elements that change into positive ones, negative thoughts into positive ones towards a better life. If nature has not been changed into positive, nobody will be able to help human life. “To help this process, it must be followed with the implementation of catur bratha penyepian or four abstinences,” he said. After implementing the catur bratha penyepian it is then resumed with Ngembak Geni that philosophically means that pilgrims do their best after making an evaluation. It is then ended with Darma Shanti to forgive each other. (BTN/015)

fter attending the grant handover of official residence for the chief of Badung police at Blahkiuh, Regent of Badung, I Nyoman Giri Prasta, accompanied Chief of Bali Police and Petrus Reinhard Golose, made a visit to Mengwi Grand Palace on Wednesday (Mar. 15). The presence of the regent of Badung and the Bali police chief and Denpasar police chief at Mengwi Grand Palace received warm greetings from senior figure of Mengwi Grand Palace, A.A. Gde Agung, with his wife and headman and hamlet chief across Mengwi village. At that time, Bali police chief with the regent of Badung were invited to have lunch together. After lunch with warm conversation with the former regent of Badung for two periods, Bali police chief accompanied by the Regent Prasta Giri expressed his happiness to be invited to Mengwi Grand Palace that has beautiful and comfortable atmosphere. When asked about the regional security, Bali police chief said that his institution wants a treatment, especially regarding the handling of terrorism in Bali. “Maintaining the security of Bali has become an obligation for the ranks of the security forces, including the Balinese people,” he explained. Meanwhile, A.A. Gde Agung expressed his appreciation to the visit of the Bali police chief and all the police ranks both of the Badung police chief and Denpasar police chief at Mengwi Grand Palace. Gde Agung said the meeting with the Bali police chief is a coincidence because he last time met the police chief Petrus Reinhard Golose 12 years ago while dealing with Bali bombing disaster in 2005. Gde Agung told that after the 2005 Bali bombings occurred,

at that time he served as the regent of Badung and Petrus invited him to the presentation of Bali bombing handling before the president. Gde Agung admired the police chief because at that time he could present through audio-visual about the actor behind the Bali bombing. Meanwhile, when asked by the President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono then related to the postbombing recovery, Gde Agung spontaneously proposed an idea to appeal to the president in order that national, regional and international events could be organized in Bali. This idea received a great response from the president. Various events such as the G8 Summit and other events were immediately organized in Bali, especially in Badung. As a result, tourism was back to life. “Bali bombing has a remarkable impact, ranging from local revenue decline to social problems where hotel workers were laid off. Besides, it also resulted in economic problems that will further cause people’s impoverishment,” he explained. Gde Agung admitted that tourist visit to Taman Ayun Temple having relation to Mengwi, is not so long. So, it requires an innovation as well as additional tourist

attraction at Taman Ayun. He has taken measure and immediately built a cultural museum in the area of Taman Ayun equipped mini theater. The minitheater will play back documentary films about the great rituals ever held at Taman Ayun Temple and films about the procession on the cremation of Ida Cokorde Mengwi. Other than being included in the calendar of annual event, in August of this year will be held the Taman Ayun Barong Festival Regeneration Superstar. With the establishment of cultural museum, a mini theater and barong festival, guests are expec-ted to make a longer visit at Taman Ayun. Regarding the existence of Mengwi Palace, after leaving the office as the regent, the Mengwi Grand Palace very much welcomes visitors, which means that palace can be visited by travelers. “By and large, after a visit to Taman Ayun, travelers will also make a visit to royal palace. In essence, we very much welcome,” he added. The idea of Gde Agung is an innovative contribution to cultural preservation and tourism development in Bali and especially in Badung. (BTN/kmb)

Special Ritual Held to Preserve Traditional Arts

Used to Overcome Plague, Now Becomes Cultural Attraction ach year ahead of the Nyepi (Day of Silence) celebration, there will a different atmosphere, especially at Kediri customary village, Tabanan. In other regions, ahead of the celebration may be graced with the making and parade of ogoh-ogoh (papier mâché demon) or bamboo cannon, but Kediri precisely holds cultural event in the form of Tektekan. It is named the Tektekan Kediri-Nangluk Merana. This event will take place for eleven days starting from March 17 through March 27, 2017 or on the Pengerupukan Day. The annual event will be packaged in a parade. Moreover, on March 25 and 26 this special event will be held in front of the Desa and Puseh Temple of Kediri customary village. In the meantime, the road closure will take place on March 27, 2017 where the route will reach the Kediri roundabout. Chief of Kediri customary village, AAG Ngurah Panji Wisnu, explained that during the eleven days, the entire customary villagers of Kediri ranging from children to adults will go around the village while playing the sounds from a variety of sources. They are ranging from kulkul (bamboo split drum), gong or okokan (large cow bell). Some have even been modified with the accompaniment of bleganjur. “In total, there are seven hamlets at Kediri customary village that will take turns to go round from one hamlet to another hamlet existing is at our village,” he explained. Further, he said that tektekan tradition in the area of Kediri customary village is inherited from generation to generation. So far, there is no any record on the history of its origin. According to his ancestors, the tradition came together with the outbreaks in Kediri. “At that time, many residents were experiencing sickness to death and they also faced harvest failure because their paddy fields were attacked by pests,” he said. Due to concerns over the calamity occurred at that time, community leaders and temple priests agreed to invoke guidance by praying at local Puseh Temple. At that time, they got a clue if the pandemic could be eliminated by means of sounds. Armed with this clue, the residents of Kediri came down and went around the village while playing tektekan for few days. Finally, it was proved that the plague attacking the customary village disappeared. Since then, the tektekan tradition has psychical function to dismiss plague. Its implementation cannot be predicted because it depends on the incidence of outbreak at the village. With the changing of time or more precisely from 2014 the tektekan tradition began to be transformed into an entertainment art. Moreover, local villagers agreed to hold this tradition as annual attraction coinciding with the Hindus celebrating Nyepi. During the execution of tektekan tradition at local customary village, the officials suggest road users to find alternative road section. “We’ve made coordination with police authority, especially on the secu- Tektekan tradition in the area of Kediri customary village is inherited from generation to generation. rity and traffic diversion,” he concluded.

uputan Badung Park has an Indian connection. It was here, in 1950, that India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru addressed the Balinese people during his State visit to Indonesia. On Saturday, the 18th March 2017, the Park was witness to an Indian function, when the Consulate General of India in Bali celebrated the Indian Festival of Colours, Holi. Holi is an ancient Hindu festival, the origin of which has many stories. But most significantly, it celebrates the end of a long winter in India and the beginning of spring. It is a time to begin enjoying the abundance of the colours of spring and to say good bye to the cold winter. The participants play and colour each other and indulge themselves in singing and

The function was graced by the presence of representation of the government, apart from members of the diplomatic corps and a colourful mix of Indians, Indonesians and expats who enjoyed the entertainment that was put on show, apart from joining the fun and frolic by applying the colours of Holi liberally on each other as sign of friendship and universal brotherhood. The Consul General of India in Bali, Mr. R.O. Sunil Babu, welcomed the gathering and urged them to enjoy the fun of Holi. He briefed on the popular origins of Holi celebration in Hindu mythology and remarked that it was an occasion for fun as well as one to rekindle friendships and build new ones.

It is through taksu reramon - set of gamelan - that will be returned through a series of rituals. “In the level of customary village, the reramon is usually given ritual on Tumpek Krulut. District

As part of the celebration the students of Indian Cultural Centre led by ICC Dance Teacher Mrs. Preeti Sinha presented one Indian Classical Dance “Mohe Rang Dolal” and a dynamic Indian contemporary dance from medley of various Bollywood Song. The gathering enjoyed the dance programe immensely. Holi bazaar with stalls from two prominent Indian restaurants- Queens of India and Golden Saffron, a food provision store, the Indian Store and a stall from ISKCON, saw a large number of customers who were eager to sample Indian cuisine and make purchases of the Indian jewellery and handicrafts as well as spiritual books. government has several sets of reramon but so far has never been consecrated,” said Acting Head of the Karangasem Culture Agency, Putu Arnawa, after preparation meeting for the National Utsawa Dharma Gita on Thursday (Mar. 16). He said the reramon belonging to the government of Karangasem is regularly used all this time. It is scheduled to be used in various activities such as welcoming guests, celebrations of town anniversary and the Bali Arts Festival (BAF). According to him, the Tumpek Krulut ritual has high philosophical significance. In essence, it is a respect to the elements of natural forces in the form of art instruments. ”In Hinduism, gong is an important part of ritual implementation. To always maintain the psychical vibration, it should be provided with ritual on Tumpek Krulut,” he said. Implementation of the Tumpek Krulut ritual is part of the attempts of the culture agency in preserving the culture in the midst of society. By organizing ritual in the level of local government, it is expected to motivate the commu-

nity to jointly preserve the existing culture and traditions. Arnawa recognized that currently the condition of traditional performing arts in Karangasem is alarming. Only a few types of art remain to exist. They are only the arts related to ritual implementation. Gambuh is one of them. Nowadays, the existence of gambuh art can be counted on fingers. Actually this typical drama also has a selling point to support tourism sector. To revive the traditional arts, the Customary Division Head at the Karangasem Culture Agency, Gusti Made Suantara, said that his agency is currently recording the remaining traditional arts. The other classical arts recorded include the Gambuh Pesedahan and Gambuh Peladung. These arts are attempted to be reconstructed this year. (BTN/kmb)

ibang Kaja village, Abiansemal, Badung, has the potential to be developed into a tourism village. Other than having exotic paddy fields for trekking spot, the village also has a silk worm farm, Ayung River tourist areas and the Green School with the education system always becoming the pilot. “We will make Sibang Kaja a tourism village,” said the headwoman of Sibang Kaja, Ni Nyoman Rai Sudani. Currently, explained Rai Sudani, the breeding of silkworms has become a tourist attraction. It is not only visited by local community such as school students but also domestic and foreign travelers. They want to see the process of silkworm being capable of producing silk fabric, in addition to being a butterfly. “Silkworm has become a tourist attraction other than the center for education,” she said. Green School also becomes the center of attention to travelers. Domestic and foreign school and college students carry out a comparative study to learn more about eco-friendly place with all-organic crops. “We just need to BTN/bud arrange the eastern part, namely the watershed of the Ayung River to paddy field areas of Subak Ketapang that are good for a jogging track,” she said. In the area of Ayung River, her authorities will develop a variety of organic culinary business. A food stall in ancient Balinese building will be designed with natural materials. The merchants consist of local community wearing Balinese clothes. After going along the jogging track, travelers can enjoy local cuisines here. “We are also breeding Bali Starling armed with the assistance of 10 heads. Now, they have proliferated to a total of seven heads,” she added. Together with the support of her residents, Rai Sudani also planned to organize beji spring as an object of spiritual tourism. The water will be channeled through a shower, so that people can use to cleanse themselves physically and spiritually. Besides, this area also has a positive aura. “Besides, we have planned to process the water source into bottled water, so that it can be sold for the public welfare of Sibang Kaja,” he added. Buleleng Tourism Waits for Your Visit P

lentiful tourist destinations in Buleleng begin to be thronged by visitors. Various attempts have been made to attract tourist visit. One of them is through the implementation of promotional event. For instance, the cycling championship initiated by the Indonesia sport bike association (ISSI) Buleleng is expected to further popularize the tourist attractions in Buleleng. The ISSI under the leadership of Ni Kadek Turkini will hold a cycling championship in April 2017 with the theme “King of the Upgrade 2017.” This woman from Lovina said that the cycling event organized is also aimed to introduce and participate in promoting Buleleng tourism potential to the participants. The potential of natural and cultural attractions owned by Buleleng is not inferior to that of other regions. Since the promotion and implementation of event are not maximized, the tourists visit to Buleleng has not

been as busy as in South Bali. “As the messages of the Buleleng Regent, although the event organized is cycling race, it will also be accompanied with the introduction to the tourism potential of our region,” said the wife of Made Kardika. This chairman of the PDI-P Faction in the Buleleng House of Representatives added the championship of ‘King of the Upgrade’ to be held

ealizing Taman Mumbul as a spiritual tourist destination in Badung is a very smart idea. In addition to keeping the village asset, it can also bring in economic benefits for local community. Just imagine, every day there are always guests coming to make a visit. Moreover, they also come on auspicious days, like Kliwon, full moon, new moon and Banyupinaruh. Taman Mumbul is a sacred place sanctified by the Sangeh and surrounding communities. It has a big pond like a lake with clear water. The water sources from 11 major springs and dozens of small springs around the lake. Aside from being functioned as source of clean water for people’s

daily life, the lake water is also used to irrigate paddy fields of Subak Sangeh spreading across the area of 200 hectares. Chief of Sangeh customary village, Ida Bagus Dipayana, said that Taman Mumbul can be divided into three areas, namely the innermost, middle and outermost courtyard. The innermost courtyard hosts several temples such as the Ulunsuwi, Taman Beji, Segara Kelebutan, Ratu Gede, Taman Mumbul, Ratu Niang and Bebaturan to worship wong samar (supernatural beings). “All the temples have their own function, but in essence they are functioned to maintain the nature and safety of Sangeh people,” he said. Ulunsuwi Temple is located in the northern most venerated by

members of Subak Sangeh. On particular days, subak members perform a ceremony as an expression of gratitude to God for the graces bestowed. In the southern part sits the Taman Beji Temple with three fountains as destination of melasti (physical and psychical purification) procession. Remaining in the region, there is Segara Kelebutan Temple in the form of three-tiered meru shrine located in the middle of the pond. In the south of the pond precisely under a banyan tree sits the representative temple of Taman Ayun. This temple was established when making the pond that was never finished. Its levees were always broken. Seeing this condition, the royal figure of Mengwi was invited to come. After that, the levees of the lake became very strong, so that it was then made a shrine to worship the deities of Taman Ayun. Meanwhile, the Ratu Gede Temple is used to venerate the guardian in the psychical ream of the pond. The middle courtyard of the Taman Mumbul Temple is located

in the east of the area. This temple is venerated by the Brahmana hamlet. There is also a Pengelukatan Temple marked by eleven fountains. Here, the residents do self-purificatory rite (melukat) physically and psychically accompanied by the presentation of the offerings. Sangeh community believes that Ratu Niang abides at this temple. Then, the southernmost shrine is bebaturan (menhir) used to worship wong samar (supernatural beings). “Therefore, we always urge visitors to always prioritize ethics as the region the Taman Mumbul area is rich in objects and sacred places,” he said. This arrangement, explained I.B. Dipa, is meant to make the place attractive and comfortable to be visited. The arrangement workmanship started

in 2016. Thankfully, it can be operated in late 2016. Arrangement of the area was funded by assistance of Badung government and village treasury. “The assistance of Badung government is worth IDR 4 billion and village treasury approximately amounted to IDR 500 million,” he said. In the meantime, the outermost courtyard located at southernmost area (after the Pengelukatan Temple) will be made into water attraction equipped with a pool of children and adult. Various types of water tourist attractions will be created as children playground. “Hopefully, the water attraction could be realized in 2018,” he hoped.

Solo Exhibition of Gede Oka Astawa at Griya Santrian Art Gallery E

cological issues featured in paintings are unique and intriguing. Such works of art do not only present the essence of beautiful art, but also deliver meaningful messages. It happens because the artists talk more about relationship between human and nature through acrylic media on canvas. With expressionistic abstract style, painters would like to develop and simplify the form, object or figure into abstract works. The paintings are the work of I Gede Oka Astawa where they are now on display at the Griya Santrian Art Gallery Sanur. The first solo exhibition after the Griya Santrian Art Gallery is renovated takes the theme Palemahan-- guidance of human and nature relationship. At least 20 works of art are on display for more than a month (March 17May 12). The figure I Gede Oka Astawa

is really interested in making the palemahan as a medium to frame the exhibition event. He reads the theme about the nature and ecological issues in his work in terms of his perspective as a Balinese. Local values are not displayed prominently in visual form. Locality or all of Balinese elements in creative process of Oka serves as repository of knowledge, the stimulation igniting the creative process in bringing the works of painting. Observing the works of his painting, Oka performs an articulation of the themes associated with the latest issue of nature and ecology. The issues on land conversion from agriculture to industry are represented in the work entitled ‘Farmer.’ Then, it can be seen in a gestural abstraction looking to be stunned, holding a hoe. Abstraction of hoe object in the work shows if the figure is a farmer. Various changes in social and

olf is a very enjoyable sport. By playing golf, the stress in the body will get relieved. This is what perceived by Alexander Rosliakov, a golf player from Russia, when met after playing golf at New Kuta Golf, Pecatu, on Monday (Mar. 13). is a favorite destination to play golf. “I have started to like Bali from around six years ago. I usually come to Bali once a week for a refreshing, not for business. After departing from Bali, I will continue my business and introduce Bali at my business premises,” said Alex, his nickname. To him, other than as tourist destination, golf courses in Bali are not inferior to golf courses in Thailand, Hawaii, the Philippines and other Asian countries. Indonesia in general and Bali in particular has very warm climates, making it

suitable for playing golf. “Many of my colleagues from Germany and the Netherlands always say that Bali is one of the best destinations for golfing in addition to relaxing. I always recommend Bali to my colleagues overseas. I really love Indonesia and Bali in particular. And love, love, love Bali very much. Thanks to Bali,” he said. The arrival of Alex this time is somewhat special because he does not only play golf as usual, but also plays golf quickly. A total of 18 holes he conquered within 1 hour 12 minutes with a total score of 94 (holes 1-9 with score of 46 and hole 10-18 with score 48). This is the fastest game of golf since getting involved in this hobby because to complete 18 holes usually takes him 4-5 hours. This is done for a new challenge and breaking the record as the fastest golfer. Although he had been fatigue and cramping in hole 12, he could still continue the challenge until the finish in hole 18. “In the future, I will do more regular practices, so that I complete the game faster than the time I have broken. This is the first challenge and I did in Bali,” he said. B N (BTN/kmb)

interests of various parties in Bali. The tourism having become the branding of Bali is economically potential to be developed. Infrequently, the intention to develop gets slipped into the intention to dominate and exploit nature and culture excessively. No doubt that Bali later becomes the arena of struggle for the interests of large investors, for example, those looking to ‘dominate’ and exploit nature and culture excessively are just for their own interests. Through the work entitled

‘Tug of War’ Oka presents two figures playing tug of war in which Bali is briefly described by Oka as the image of Bali Island sitting between the bondage of rope being played by abstractive two figures. We all agree that greening is an effort for ecological ‘investment’ in the future. Similarly, Oka, in his work entitled ‘Maintaining Balance’ and ‘No Shelter’ looks to speak about the importance of reforestation activities in order to preserve nature. B N (BTN/015)

ormerly in the area of Gianyar Market there was a man nicknamed Mr. Trash. I wonder who actually his real name is. His work is picking up trash around the market. He gathered it in one place in accordance with his capacity but remained in the market area, too. Some was burned, but often abandoned as such. At that time, the plastic waste was not much as today. They mostly consisted of organic waste. Did he not have a job or get unemployed? Oh no. He has superiority. He could do anything requested by people mostly in the market areas. Transporting of goods, cleaning stalls, fixing tile or working in paddy field and so on or any odd jobs he could do. His posture is thin and he has black skin. People around the market have been familiar with him. However, those who did not know him might be afraid of see-

ing his figure. His body tended to be dirty, while his gums and teeth were blackened due to tobacco. Not infrequently, people considered him crazy. Perhaps, it happens because he was just seen picking up trash. Many people said that he was ‘jobless.’ At that time, there was no garbage worker hired by local government. There was only the ‘crazy’ Mr. Trash who ‘was jobless.’ When asked why he was picking up and collecting trash? He simply answered ‘to make it clean.’ That was all and nothing more. No theory and miscellaneous purposes he told. Similarly, there was no hidden agenda ahead of elections, gubernatorial election or anything else as commonly found today. He is nobody. He is zero, but actually a hero. No one thought if the typology of Mr. Trash is required so much and very necessary. Regardless of the purpose and intention, we do need the figure like Mr. Trash. He is so concerned about environmental sanitation. Indeed we see today that so many cleanup actions are undertaken by people. They are held in the market area, temples or other sanctums, tourist attractions such as museums, beaches and so on. We do them all. It is for the sake of sanitation and beauty of Bali Island as a world’s tourist attraction. We do not want Bali to be besieged and then abandoned by travelers. We are building people’s awareness of sanitation. It needs time and patience. We do need to emulate the character of Mr. Trash. He is not crazy but real action indirectly inspires all people to care for the environment. Unexpectedly, it turns out the thinking pattern of the man considered ‘crazy’ has been far beyond his time. He is indeed a visionary person. B N

Moreover, almost all the graduates being equivalent to Diploma I and Diploma II have been absorbed in the industry. “Of the 67 graduates, a total of 49 people have been working, while the others are under preparation,” he said. In the lectures, explained Suanaya, the PPKIP refers to the competency program where 40 percent is theory and remaining 60 percent is practice. The best graduating students are entitled to get an award. For the graduation day of 2017, the first, second and third best graduates are respectively achieved by Ni Putu Ekayani, Ni Wayan Eka Dewi Sruti and Ni Putu

It also refers to the standards of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), so that it becomes the hotel need that should be accepted. “The students graduating this time get two certificates namely the certificate being equivalent to Diploma I and Diploma II and a certificate of competency,” he said. This fairly senior PPKIP Jaya Wisata has given birth to graduates having the ability and quality in the face of global competition, so that all the graduates can be accepted in the hospitality industry or cruise ship. “As a local community, we may not lose in the competition against migrants in our home region. Lest we cannot do anything in our own homes,” he added. Graduates of the PPKIP never become trying candidates, but must be competent and good-looking. On that account, the job training conducted by the students averagely gets good grades, so that they are absorbed in the industry before graduating. “Many PPKIP graduates have occupied higher positions in their workplace because they have quite good capability,” he said. Batu Kursi Hill

An Exotic Attraction Offering Two Views hen spending holidays, making a visit to tourist attractions can become an option. It does not only kill time, but also eliminates fatigue after busyness with a myriad of activities. Among the many attractions, Batu Kursi (literally chair stone) may become an option that can be included in your itinerary. The hill is located in West Buleleng, precisely at Pemuteran village, Gerokgak, that offers two views at once, namely Mountain View and sea view. Looking for this object is not difficult. Just come and cross the path of Seririt-Gilimanuk. Approximately, it is about 15 minutes’ drive from Pulaki Temple to the west. There visitors will be immediately greeted by signpost right in front of the intersection reading “Pura Batu Chair” (Batu Kursi Temple) and then you immediately turn left to park your vehicle. After getting down, the eyes will be instantly pampered by towering hills. To get to the temple, you are only charged with voluntary donation by local attendant. After that, the journey to the hill and the temple immediately starts. The road is quite uphill and must step on hundreds of stairs. Having reached in the middle of the way, your fatigue will get paid with a beautiful view on hilltop with verdant trees. Some areas are just overgrown by grasses generating a yellowish green color. At first glance, it looks like a Teletabies Hill. It is suitable to be used as a background of photography. This attraction does not include special shelter but when summer heats do not worry. Visitors can take shelter under a neem tree. Pouring sweat will immediately disappear after being blown by refreshing sea breezes. At that time, visitors can witness the beauty of the sea at Pemuteran in turquoise color and so does the very exotic Menjagan Island. Other than enjoying the natural atmosphere, visitors can simultaneously say prayers at the Batu Kursi Temple located at the middle of the hills. By doing so, the holidays will be getting more complete. Attendant of the tourist attraction, Ketut Mariada, said that the tourist visits to the location is quite crowded within the past few years chiefly during holidays. They are mostly teenagers because the location is pretty good to take selfie. “During holidays, the visit reaches hundreds of people. Every day there are always visitors especially young people,” he said. BTN

Tourism development cannot be carried out alone, but must be integrated and synergized with the activities in other fields such as infrastructure including roads, sanitation, environment and development of other empowerment programs to the people concerned. Regent Artha is aware that in matter of tourism it will certainly compete against other districts in Bali. However, it is not a barrier as long as it has a different tourism. “Surely it must be different. We have many historical places in grabbing the autonomy. ali is known for its tourism. However, it only develops in South Bali. Most economic development is concentrated in South Bali. In the meantime, North Bali, East Bali and West Bali still need a touch. This becomes a challenge to the government and the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) as the state-owned enterprise in order that tourism pie can be enjoyed evenly across

B

Bali. “To that end, we have a concept that the tourism development in North Bali region must be different from that of South Bali. When all the developments resemble to that of South Bali, then the diversity as the typicality of Bali will disappear. The spirit of Bali will slowly get eliminated. We have the concept and still feel the Balinese, but it’s unlike in South Bali,” said Deputy Director of ITDC, Jatmiko K Santosa, on Wednesday (Mar. 1). The assertion was made by Jatmiko to Indonesia Network, Bali Post and BaliTV. To that end, he admitted to have conducted studies for the development of the region like Nusa Dua in North Bali. However, the more importantly is running the program of community-based tourism. When speaking about tourism, it does not only include beaches, hawkers, dancers or food, but another thing often forgotten is that tourism is about experience. Indeed, in the experience there are people, interaction with humans, beautiful location and culture. Actually the most important thing is experience. Now, if the experience is just like the beach, it can be

found anywhere. Lifestyle as offered Kuta beach town is not necessary in Bali. However, Bali has been already famous for it. Something less in Bali is how the experience to live in a Balinese culture of nobility and majesty that needs to be improved. “To that end, the ITDC is thinking of the community-based tourism development,” he said. One thing to be developed is the tourism village. There is a tourism village in Bali whose landscape is very beautiful. However, travelers just take pictures for one or two hours, after which they return to hotel. Local community only gets a few percent of the admission ticket for entering the region. “Actually they can eat and sleep there, learn to dance there, learn about Balinese culture or just learn to make offerings. Everything can be learned, and that is experience,” he said. Currently, the ITDC has been making synergy with other state-owned enterprises.

Through this synergy, it will develop the community-based tourism. The point is how to make people or travelers come somewhere by staying more than one day. Hopefully, it would direct to the development of cultural tourism. Actually many potentials can be developed in Bali because Balinese culture is very grand and well-maintained, unlike that of other regions. In this case, the ITDC is assigned by the government to create destination. “We try to create or develop several other destinations because it is in line with the direction of president in developing tourism namely developing the economy from the periphery,” he concluded. Suyasa. Selena Fix said that at the campus of Undhira she and her fellow students are taking courses of cultural studies for five months. She chooses this program because she is very impressed with Bali. Though the island is small, it has a unique culture and the community promotes local wisdom and the harmonization of religion is very nice. “Bali is very unique and is different from our home country,” said Selena Fix. Similar comment was given by Michelle Schreiber. This sweet lady admitted to get impressed when attending off-campus lectures in Singaraja. In North Bali, she and her friends made a visit to an orphanage and interacted with local children. They also had time to visit some tourist attractions like Tanah Lot, Uluwatu and others. “While in Bali, we do not travel in Kuta because it is too crowded. We travel to Canggu to see the beauty of nature and feel

the atmosphere of local village,” said Michelle Schreiber. According to her, the island community has traditional art, classical and modern art and they still survive up to these days. It is different from her home country that has no traditional music or dance. Moreover, the dance preserved by local community is unique and everything is well organized quickly. “Balinese culture is unique. We have never experienced and enjoyed this kind of unique art before. We learn this dance, and will be assessed at the end,” she said. Larisa Nuszbaum admitted that their study in Bali is on their own account. The tuition of studying at the Undhira will later be included in the study tuition at their home country because there has been cooperation in the field of study. During the study in Bali, they stay at campus’ dorm. ‘The food in Bali is also delicious,” she said. B N (BTN/015)

BTN

People wishing to enjoy the uniqueness of this tradition are required to wear traditional Balinese attires and woman getting her period is not allowed to come into the temple area. Many people interpret the word Ngerebong as ‘assembling.’ Besides, there is also an interpretation as spinning. People believe that on the ngerebong day is the auspicious day where many gods gather.

Center of this tradition is carried out at Petilan Temple. So, the temple is better known as the Pengerebongan Temple. Some people call this ngerebong an ancient tradition so that residents can be avoided from calamity or disaster. It includes the Butha Yadnya ceremony that aims to neutralize the evil power (bhuta) in order to become good power (god) so as not to interfere with human beings, especially at Kesiman. A customary and cultural ob-

Hence, the ritual is also called ngurek (self-stubbing by kris dagger) that rotates around wantilan hall clockwise. Aura of the trance is very intense at this customary ritual. BTN

main pillars, namely tourism marketing, tourist destination development and human resource development of the players. Various programs conducted are holistic and integrative.

“We try to create or develop several other destinations because it is in line with the direction of president in developing tourism namely developing the economy from the periphery,” he concluded. ormerly in the area of Gianyar Market there was a man nicknamed Mr.

Erika Pebrianti. This educational institution, added Suanaya, has developed and been providing education in accordance with the curricula.

13). This man born in St. Petersburg on January 14, 1970, has started to play golf since the age of 40 years or about seven years ago. He likes playing golf because of the challenges and golf players are usually friendly and educated. Bali

is a favorite destination to play golf.

B N (BTN/015)

ibang Kaja village, Abiansemal, Badung, has the potential to be developed into a tourism village.

R

ealizing Taman Mumbul as a spiritual tourist destination in Badung is a very smart idea.

(BTN/015)

Kedaton is indeed presenting tame flying fox specifically taken to make photographs,” he said. To attract more tourist visits, Sumadi claimed to be doing more arrangements in the area. His management will also make cooperation with travel agencies and tour guide, so that they want to take their guests to visit Alas Kedaton. “Arrangement of this park is an effort to improve the quality of the object, so that it is able to create a safe and comfortable destination,” added Sumadi. fter attending the grant handover of official residence for the chief of Badung police at Blahkiuh, Regent of Badung, I Nyoman Giri Prasta, accompanied Chief of Bali Police and Petrus Reinhard Golose, made a visit to Mengwi Grand Palace on Wednesday (Mar.

The participants play and colour each other and indulge themselves in singing and

dancing to take full enjoyment of the advent of spring. He briefed on the popular origins of Holi celebration in Hindu mythology and remarked that it was an occasion for fun as well as one to rekindle friendships and build new ones.

arangasem has many traditional arts. However, they are mostly on the verge of extinction because there is no regeneration. Karangasem culture agency is ready to revive the spirit of traditional arts by reconstructing them. As an initial measure, the arrangement starts from the scope of local government.

(BTN/kmb)

Later, the

K

queen gave birth to twin children named Sri MasulaSri Masuli.
