Dalem Sidakarya Temple n the area of Sidakarya village Denpasar sits a temple becoming the evidence of the pilgrimage of Brahmin Keling which was eventually named Dalem Sidakarya. The temple is called the Mutering Jagat Dalem Sidakarya as a sanctum of the Hindus to invoke the penyida karya holy water. In the Sidakarya Chronicle compiled by Nyoman Kantun and Ketut Yadnya is mentioned that at first the temple having the anniversary or pujawali on Tumpek Landep poses the abode of Brahmin Keling that is none other than the son of Danghyang Kayumanis, grandson of the Mpu Candra, great-grandson of Mpu Bahula and great-great grandson of Mpu Beradah. He was called Brahmin Keling because he was from the area of Keling in East Java. Brahmin Keling was a very famous preacher of the truth having the knowledge of moksha or liberation. He was meritorious because he has reversed the curse which previously caused the ritual-supporting trees to wilt, the pest was raging, diseases attacked the residents and pilgrims were getting involved in a fight for no reason. Everything turned chaotic. Then, Dalem Waturenggong was meditating in Besakih and got directions from the deity that he has sinned as casting out his own brother. To restore the original condition, it was only the Brahmin Keling who was able to do so. Ultimately, Dalem Waturenggong requested the help of the Brahmin Keling to make the Bali Island return to the previous condition and the Eka Dasa Rudra ritual in Besakih could be resumed in the full moon of the tenth month of Balinese calendar (April), circa Caka 1437 or 1515 AD. As a result, the ritual ran successfully (Sidakarya) as expected by Dalem Waturenggong and society. On that basis, the Brahmin Keling was conferred the title Dalem Sidakarya, said I Nyoman Kantun, Chief of Sidakarya customary village. Dalem Waturenggong before the ministers or the dukes, Danghyang Nirartha and Dalem Sidakarya, said that since then and hereinafter, all the Hindus that organized rituals were obliged to invoke penyida karya holy water in order that the ritual could run smoothly. To commemorate the services of Dalem Sidakarya onwards, it was then established a temple as the sanctum to invoke the Sidakarya holy water for the Hindus around the year 1518 AD where the King Dalem Waturenggong instructed the King of Badung establish the Dalem Sidakarya Temple. was in this Mutering Jagat Dalem Sidakarya Temple, said Kantun, people still invoked the Sidakarya holy water for the success of rituals (yajna ceremony) and it was also called tirta pemarisudhan jagat. When any plants were attacked by pests people should not be cursing, but should invoke the holy water in the Mutering Jagat Dalem Sidakarya Temple. In this temple lie a number of shrines, namely the Pemayun Agung as representation of Besakih Temple and Mount Agung, Manik Geni shrine as representation of Lempuyang Temple, Pemayun Toya shrine as representation of Batur Temple, Pemayun Cakra as representation of Batukaru Temple, Pemayun Ngurah Agung as representation of Uluwatu Temple and Pemayun Putra as representation of Sakenan Temple. Aside from the representation of Sad Kahyangan Temple (six great temples), in this temple also sit the Jagat Natha shrine other than the chamber shrine of Ida Batara Dalem Sidakarya. With the concentration of representation shrines of Sad Kahyangan Temple equipped with the Jagatnatha shrine, this temple is then named the Mutering Jagat Dalem Sidakarya. B N (BTN/kmb)

Tanjung Benoa, a Hub of Water Sports pending holidays in Bali seems incomplete before trying some marine attractions at Tanjung Benoa. Aside from serving as accommodation center, the tourist resort sitting in South Kuta subdistrict has a fairly long stretch of beach and retains beautiful coastal nature. As tourism supporting facilities, various water attractions are on offer at Tanjung Benoa and these make the area better known as a hub of marine tourism in Bali. Perching close to ITDC Nusa Dua area makes it a strategic and ideal location for five-star hotels. Along the beach, dozens of water sport businesses offer a wide selection of attractions. They are ranging from parasailing, diving, banana boat, flying fish and some other challenging attractions. Regarding the price, they are still affordable with foreign tourists and local tourists, especially the lineups of students. The most favorite attraction for foreign tourists is parasailing where they can fly happily and circle in the air over the sea. Unlike banana boat, tourists have been very familiar with this attraction. Participants can ride on it while using a life jacket. Afterward, the parachute is pulled by a boat moving at medium speed.

Tanah Lot Attraction Soon Implements E-Ticketing mplementation of electronic ticket or e-ticketing has become the priority of the Tanah Lot tourist attraction management. So far, it has not been realized. “E-ticketing should be immediately implemented because it has become one of the focuses programmed in 2017,” said the Regent of Tabanan, Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, Chairperson of the Tanah Lot tourism management board while leading annual meeting at the local management office on Thursday (Feb. 16). Regent Eka asserted that implementation of the e-ticketing must be realized. However, she also recog-

nized the implementation may find many obstacles such as changes in the system and the need of representative place, so that it does not interfere with the flow of incoming visitors especially during high season or long holidays. “Indeed there is a change in the system, but now we just need to follow the change,” she said. Regarding the location, Regent Eka said it can be speculated first in order not to disrupt the incoming visitors that will ultimately have an impact on services. “Make a crosssectoral coordination to resolve this problem. When Foreign Tourists Care for Plastic Waste his is about a kind of cooperation, concern and sense of belonging. Simultaneous war action against plastic waste was held at some points in Karangasem entitled One Island One Voice. This environmental care action was undertaken on Sunday (Feb. 19) by collecting various types of plastic waste. This movement was carried out in almost all coastal areas in Bali by a number of people who care about the existence of Bali’s nature. Similarly, this positive action got the support from all societal components, including the local government. Especially in Karangasem, this simultaneous action was held at some locations such as Amed Beach (Abang subdistrict), Tulamben Beach (Kubu) and Padangbai Beach (Manggis). Meanwhile, in Karangasem subdistrict it was centered at Ujung and Candidasa. Additionally, the movement was also targeting upstream region such as Karangasem village, precisely the Susuan, Gelumpang, Pangi and Juukmanis neighborhood. This activity involved all components such as civil servants, village officials, personnel of Indonesian military (TNI) and national police (Polri), students, tourism components and stakeholders, fishermen groups as well as customary community. Moreover, it was also followed by some foreign travelers happening to spend holiday in Bali. Especially for the activities held on Ujung Beach and Karangasem village was initiated by the owner of Bali Asli Gelumpang Restaurant, Karangasem, namely Penelope Jeans Williams. “Public awareness of keeping the environment remains low. Therefore, it needs to be addressed together, especially the plastic waste. The awareness of loving the environment needs to be built from childhood. If beaches are dirty, especially due to plastic waste, guests will not come here,” said Penelope Jeans Williams. Subdistrict head of Karangasem, Cokorda Alit Surya Prabawa, also looked to participate in the action on Ujung Beach. He came down to involve civil servants, Tumbu village official, fishermen group of Ujung Beach, and Ujung Hyang customary villagers. In the meantime, the activities at Karangasem village was coordinated directly by Commander of Karangasem Military District, I Nyoman Mangku, Chief of Karangasem Subdistrict Police, I Gede Wali and headman of Karangasem Wayan Gusita, by involving civil servants, police and military personnel, residents, customary youth clubs and students of SMPN 1 Karangasem junior high school and SDN 9 Karangasem elementary school. Similar activity was held on Candidasa Beach involving civil servants from several agencies, Karangasem subdistrict staff, stu-

T

dents from nearby schools, tourism players, including some foreign travelers who happened to be vacationing at Candidasa. Cok Alit asserted that the movement in some parts of the Karangasem subdistrict could collect hundreds of sacks of plastic waste. “If all move together, it is unimaginable how many tons of plastic waste that can be collected throughout Bali in the movement made on single day,” he said. Cok Alit hoped the movement can foster the awareness of the majority of Balinese people, at least to reduce the use of plastic in everyday life for the sake of continuity and ‘health’ of the earth to be inherited by next generation such as children and grandchildren. Seeing the importance of the fight against plastic waste movement, Penelope Jeans Williams and subdistrict head of Karangasem agreed to carry it out periodically. In addition to maintaining environmental sanitation, it also continues to provide an understanding for the public so that they are aware, and intervene jointly in maintaining the sanitation to keep away from various disasters. Works, please try to help where we can find a proper location. Likewise, the Transportation Agency, please help assess the right place so as not to disrupt the incoming visitors,” she asked. Operations Manager of Tanah Lot tourist attraction, I Ketut Toya Adnyana, stated that the implementation of e-ticketing has actually been included in the short-term priority program of the manage-

ment she leads. The implementation of electronic ticket is expected to be realized as soon as possible. “We are still thinking of where should place the machine so as not to interfere with the convenience of visitors when they come to the object. We hope the support of all parties so that the implementation of e-ticketing and other programs can be realized and services at Tanah Lot can be getting better,” she hoped. (BTN/015)

their visit to other destination. Besides, our airport’s capacity is also limited,” he explained. Yuniartha hoped the public works agency could begin to think about the construction of flyovers. Where possible or impossible to build the flyovers must involve humanists and tourism stakeholders. In addition, the airport construction in North Bali needs accelerating and so does the empowerment of seaports as an alternative entrance for travelers. “Seaport and airport construction should indeed be considered. Otherwise, how do we increase tourist visit under the current circumstances?” he asked. Tourism office itself, redicate as the best island is not just an achievement for Bali. However, it also poses a challenge to maintain the predicate so that it will not be grabbed by other regions. The Island of the Gods particularly requires destination development, so that it is attractive to travelers at all times. Likewise, it also needs the development of infrastructure such as seaports, airports and roads to resolve traffic congestion. “We do all the best. In other words, we provide coaching

for tourist destinations,” said the Head of the Bali Tourism Office, A.A. Gede Yuniartha Putra, when confirmed via telephone on Monday (Feb. 20). Yuniartha admitted to have held a coordination meeting with the district / municipality related to destinations. At least, the existing tourist destinations can continuously be developed. Afterwards, it will be resumed with the addition of destinations such as tourism villages. His office has targeted 100 tourism villages until 2018, and a total of 64 tourism villages have been developed until 2016.

“For tourism village, we will add to 10 villages to be developed in 2017,” he said. Yuniartha added that this year tourist arrivals to Bali is targeted to reach 5.5 million. However, there is a constraint where the Ngurah Rai Airport only has one runway. Another complex problem, chiefly in southern Bali, is the severe congestion. Such congestion can potentially reduce the length of stay of travelers. “That’s why tourism cannot stand alone because it must also be accompanied with development of road infrastructure to reduce congestion. Mesuryak Tradition he people of Bongan Gede Village, Tabanan have a unique way of celebrating Kunungan day. Kuningan ceremonies mostly involve some way of escorting the ancestors back to heaven after their brief visit over the holidays but Mesuryak is a unique tradition that has been carried down through the generations that involves everyone tossing money into the air and then having people scramble to grab some of the bills that range from IDR 1,000 to 100,0000 and sometimes even dollar bills. Children and teenagers are especially enthusiastic about trying to grab the bills but everyone takes part. Everyone in the family tosses bills, according to their capabilities – from hundreds of rupiah to millions. In the past it was always pis bolong (perforated coins) that were tossed, but now that these have become hard to find, paper pbank notes have become far more common. The mesuryak tradition is a way of supplying the ancestors with ‘pocket money’ for their trip back to heaven. All over Bali, people believe that the souls of the ancestors come down to earth for the week of the Galungan Festivities in the 10 days leading up to Kuningan. Mesuyak is the way the people of Bongan Gede Village see off their ancestors as they return to heaven and ensure prosperity to the people of the village who always look forward to “harvesting money”. Although some of the villagers do acquire money during Mesuyak, the primary purpose behind this tradition is the generating of happiness and excitment as it is believed that if the ancestors return home peacefully that they will bestow belssings of prosperity. Now Tana Toraja Highlands More Accessible ice President Jusuf Kalla accompanied by Tourism Minister Arief Yahya, last weekend spends four days on a working visit to boost tourism to the province. Inspecting South Sulawesi’s tourist facilities from Makassar up north to the stunning Tana Toraja highlands Accessibility to Tana Toraja was the main concern of the government, especially since, despite the fact that Toraja is already popular with tourists especially from Europe, this destination still has limited airport facilities so that those wishing to reach this spectacular area must first make an 8 to 9 hours overland journey from Makassar. Although the small airport of Pongtiku is available, but this can only take small aircrafts. During his visit to Toraja this weekend, therefore, on Sunday, 22 January, VP Jusuf Kalla and Tourism Minister Arief Yahya spent the day in a meeting with District Heads of Toraja and North Toraja, attended by the Toraja DMO and the private sector, discussing and deciding on immediate actions to be taken to urgently boost tourist arrivals to Toraja. A number of decisions were taken to be acted on urgently, including firstly, that the present Airport of Pongtiku, is only 8 km distance from the town of Makale and 10 km from Rantepao, which today receives only Trans Nusa small aircrafts, - will have its runway extended immediately from the present 1,300 meters to 1,600 meters with an additional aircraft tuning bay, in order for Garuda Indonesia aircrafts to be able to land and take off from this airport.

The extension is expected to take a few months. Secondly, construction on the larger airport earmarked to be built at Buntu Kuni will be accelerated starting with thorough soil inspection. Awaiting its completion, The Pongtiku airport is to be used, when completed the airport can receive planes carrying over 70 passengers. VP Jusuf Kalla explained that today’s tourists look for fast access to their choice destinations. In order to fulfill this need, the government is thus set to prepare the required infrastructure that includes airports and access roads. Such measures have been taken to accelerate arrivals to Lake Toba in North Sumatra that had problems similar to those of Toraja. While, Minister Arief Yahya said that Toraja is already popular in Europe, and with the influx of tourists from China to Makassar, arrivals to Toraja should double or even triple. The province of South Sulawesi at present receives around 200,000 international tourists, and 7 million domestic visitors. In 2019, it is targeted that the province will receive 500,000 international visitors and 10 million domestic tourists. Whereas, Tana Toraja itself, which is managed together by both the district of Tana Toraja and North Toraja, should be able to receive 1 million domestic tourists, up from the present 581,000. While the numbers of international tourists are expected to surge to 50,000 this year, up from 30,000 in 2016, said Minister Yahya. To serve tourists better, the Ministry of Tourism has also promised to send instructors to teach 50 qualified tourist guides in Toraja. (www.indonesia.travel)

Acceleration Team Boosts European, American and Australian MICE

A

cceleration team of Meeting, Incentive, Conference and Exhibition (MICE), Ministry of Tourism, will boost MICE travelers in 2017 from Europe, America and Australia. “These countries tend to be interested in organizing MICE activities in Indonesia, especially Bali,” said Chairman of MICE Incentive Acceleration Team, Ida Bagus Surakusuma, on Wednesday (Feb. 8). This man familiarly addressed as Lolec said that when working on the MICE market, a number of destiBTN/bud nations in Indonesia should Ida Bagus Surakusuma prepare their MICE products supported with flight accessibility. This year, central government will prioritize five destinations including Medan, Jakarta, Bali, Makassar and Manado to prepare their MICE products. “Actually there are totally 16 destinations, but only five to be prioritized first within 1-2 years to come,” he said. After preparing the accessibility and infrastructure, the MICE potential at the destinations is then summarized and packaged into promotional material. Regarding the promotion, each local government should work with central government to coordinate the sales of tourism products in international promotional events such as the ITB Berlin, ITB Asia as well as the ATF and others. An important thing in the promotion is using the facilities such as social media or digital media (online promotion) to introduce the tourism product. It is very necessary because the current competition is very tight. It has been done by Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand in promoting their respective MICE products. “We should also come to the market by providing an explanation to raise awareness, so that MICE tourism in Indonesia can be widely known,” he added. In 2016, more MICE activities were organized by domestic and AsiaPacific companies. As for 2017, the potential international MICE market includes Europe, America and Australia. However, each market has its own characteristics. For example, the Australian market comes to Bali to organize MICE activities in June, July, August, September and October, while American and European market depends on the conditions in each country. Central government plays an important role in disseminating the image of security of destinations in Indonesia becoming the target of the MICE activities in 2017 will be right on target. “America has a strong incentive market coming to Bali, while Australian incentive and association are for meeting or conference. Besides, the Asia-Pacific market for corporate conference and meeting is also great,” he said. (BTN/015)

Waste Care Day 2017 Celebrated in Badung

P

reamble is needless, just work immediately. It is the strategy of the government of Badung in defining the Waste Care Day 2017. The celebration undertaken on Wednesday (Feb. 15) was without ceremonies, but immediately held a beach cleanup in the Kuta and South Kuta subdistrict. The location included the Kedonganan, Kelan and Jimbaran to Muaya Beach. Mutual assistance between government, communities, hotels, restaurants and merchants were able to collect 70 tons of plastic waste and seaweed. The waste was then transported by

deploying two loaders, ten trucks and 700 personnel from four technical units (UPT) of Abiansemal, Mengwi, North Kuta and Kuta. Head of the Badung Environment and Sanitation Agency (DLHK), Putu Eka Merthawan, led the activity. His agency involved the entire agency from 07:00 until 10:00. In addition to cleaning up the four beaches, the DLHK also carried out regular cleaning up on Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Petitenget Beach whose marine debris has started to decrease. Phenomenon on the emergence of seaweed, said Eka Merthawan, indicates a hard seabed current, so that the DLHK team must fight back to overcome the phenomenon

of seaweed waste. “As the followup, we will check out to the sea in a few days in cooperation with the fishermen group of Kedonganan. At the same time, we will make simulation of sea waste reduction so that the marine debris can be reduced,” said Merthawan. Amid the social activities, Eka Merthawan expressed his gratitude for the help of all the components, such as hotels, restaurants, beach hawkers, customary village chief and fishermen communities that have participated for four months to resolve the problem of the marine debris. “Hopefully, this phenomenon will come to an end and the weather is getting better,” he said. Fire War Tradition of Tuban Symbolizes Magical Power ndeed Bali has inexhaustible traditions and cultures. As carried out by Tuban customary village, Kuta, they perform a ritual handed down from ancestors through generations known as siat geni or fire war. This tradition is undertaken by two groups of customary youth club from two hamlets namely the Tuban Geria and Pesalakan in Tuban. They attack each other by using embers of coconut fiber. This magical action is performed as part of the grandiose ceremony at local Dalem Temple. Implementation of this fire war tradition involves hundreds of youths in mutual attack action by throwing embers. It is held once a year and poses an obligatory ritual in a grandiose ceremony. Before the ritual begins, the fire war is first commenced with presentation of offerings in the form of food or small-scale offerings, by circumnavigating points of the compass. It is dedicated to bhuta kala coming from different directions that will attend the ritual.

I

Fire war ritual generally starts in the evening, where the youth club members from two hamlets has been assembled, namely the Tuban Geria and Pesalakan. Anyone can get involved in the devotional service or ngayah. However, it is not permitted to have revenge in this fire war. Abstinence in the fire war is that people are not allowed to take firewood from cemetery area. A fire war is performed by throwing fire of coconut fibers. In this game, boys will mingle and the players throw each other or attack each other. Fire war is a sacred game or ritual. Community leaders are still closely supervising this ritual game. This game in particular does not have any standard rules. Sometimes the youths are playing in their own way namely by banging coconut fibers to the ones carried by other players so that sparks a fire like fireworks. This ritual symbolizes the psychical realm or thing of beyond human logic namely the bhuta kala that releases its power in the form of Ludra’s fire to be presented as devotion to Bhatara Dalem.

Besides, it also symbolizes supernatural forces believed to balance the environment, so that the great strength can be channeled into a positive force that is beneficial to natural balance of the physical and psychical realm. Having performed the ritual in the fire war, all the players are given penglukatan (self-purification) and not allowed to keep any revenge. After the game finishes, all the participants getting involved in the games are saying prayers together to deities abiding at Dalem Temple for safety. Logically, this game can be considered to provide entertainment and a sense of integrity for supporting devotees or pengempon.

Vivacity and brotherhood of both that gives us an understanding hamlets are getting stronger. This to jointly maintain the balance procession poses a system of belief of physical and psychical realms.

Attending Third Anniversary of Jatiluwih Attraction, Regent Giri Prasta Presents Ecotourism-based Tourism Concept

R

egent of Badung, I Nyoman Giri Prasta, was asked to explain about the concept of ecotourism-based tourism on the third anniversary of Jatiluwih tourist attraction, Tabanan, on Sunday (Feb. 12). Before the audience such as the Deputy Regent of Tabanan, Komang Sanjaya, regional secretary of Tabanan, commander of Tabanan military district and agency officer ranks of Tabanan, Regent Giri Prasta stated that it is a great honor to be asked to convey the concept of tourism. Regent Giri Prasta described that tourism should be based on the Law No.10/2009 on tourism. In the future, Bali should be managed by the management concept known as one island management and one stop destination. “In the past, foreign and domestic travelers that visited Bali stayed for 8-12 days. Now, their length of stay decreased to only 2-3 days because they also visit other regions. To that end, we want the application of the one stop destination,” he explained. Allocation of the Hotel and Restaurant Tax (PHR) allowance of Badung district to six other districts in Bali from 2009 to 2016 has reached IDR 1.6 trillion. From this year, Badung will provide it directly without passing through the province. “Eighty percent of the Badung regionally-generated revenue comes from hotel and restaurant tax. To increase

ali is always interesting because a lot of unique things happen in daily activities of its people. Besides, it has something to do with their culture chiefly religious rituals and customs. One of which is the tradition of playing in mud, better known as Mebuug-buugan tradition as performed at Kedonganan village. Residents of Kedonganan village, Kuta, Badung, have a unique

tradition named Mebuug-buugan on the day after the celebration of Nyepi (Ngembak Geni). This tradition contains important philosophical meaning. The war tradition is known as mabuug-buugan derived from the word buug meaning muddy. With this tradition, they interact with the others by using soil or mud. This tradition is meant to neutralize bad things or characteristics. Thus, the human playing in mud visualizes soil or sludge as a form of bhutakala (evil

spirits). “Inherent impurity in human must be cleaned up.” In this mud war, all of the participants are men of all ages. They fight together using mud while mutually throwing it within joy and togetherness. After the mud war is completed, the residents then clean up themselves by walking toward white sandy beach on the west side of Kedonganan village. Interestingly, this tradition actually has long been inactive and was reinstated in 2015. Related to Nyepi celebration, the youth in the region is trying to research and revive the tradition. In fact, it got positive response from local community leaders. Community leaders also hoped that this tradition could be a tourist attraction in the region having a lot of mangrove forests and well known as a fishing village with grilled fish cafés. Mebuug-buugan has correlation with the implementation of the five abstinences in the series of Nyepi where devotees should have neutralized the power of Panca Maha Bhuta (Nyomia Bhuta). Catur bhrata penyepian or four abstinences itself containing four restrictions that should be executed when celebrating Nyepi day

namely amati geni (no fire), amati lelanguan (no passion indulgence or entertainment), amati lelungan (going nowhere) and amati karya (no activities). In the first generation, the Hindus were allowed to go out of the house, but not allowed to do activities of carrying object on the head. Therefore, in order not to lose the essence of the catur bratha penyepian (four abstinences) the mebuug-buugan tradition is then carried out on Ngembak Geni, one day after Nyepi. Procession of the mebuug-buugan is commenced with the gathering of Kedonganan customary youth club to explain about technical matters of the event. Young men of the village are only wrapped in fabric called kamen bulet ginting meaning that they only put on fabrics whose kancut is brought backward to form a circle like kecak dancer and a scarf tied at their waist. Meanwhile, female customary youth club still put on light traditional attires. After that, the presentation of caru begins at the catus pata or central intersection. It is held in the mangrove beach or the so-called east beach to avoid

undesirable things. After smearing their bodies with mud, they form a row. All the youth club members getting involved are sprinkled with holy water. It is meant to neutralize bhuta kala or negative aura in human beings. After that, the youth club members involved walk again. When arriving at their destination, right on the west coast having white sandy beach, they cleanse mud from their body. It is functioned to re-purify the body from mud in order to neutralize the power of bhuta kala.

According to an expert, Thomas A Reuters, Bayung Gede poses an ancient village becoming the parent of a number of other ancient villages in

Bangli like Penglipuran, Sekardadi, Bonyoh and several others. There is a unique tradition preserved at this village. Residents who have just got married are banned from entering into the home yard and not considered the residents of the Bayung Gede village before paying off the tumbakan (a kind of dowry) handed over to the village in the form of two cows and undergo asceticism (fasting). The brides are also required to conduct a Penyekeban procession by living in a small hut at the end of the village. Not only that, Bayung Gede village also has a unique tradition in terms of burying the placenta (umbilical cord) of the newborns. If the baby’s umbilical cord is generally buried in the ground, residents at local village have a tradition to place it in coconut shell and hung on a tree at the special cemetery located behind the village. The tradition of treating placenta in the coconut shell has been going on for hundreds of years ago.

Hundreds of Kris Daggers Exhibited at Anom Palace, Tabanan Indonesian kris dagger exhibition at Anom Palace is not only attractive, but also inspiring for visitors to know about and preserve it. All this time, the kris in Indonesia is widely identified as a mystical object as well as close to shamanism and occultism. It makes young people feel ashamed and afraid to know more about the kris intricacy. Actually, in earlier times kris is mandatory tool for a man to show off the status and prestige. Kris also becomes the hallmark of the Indonesian people because it cannot be found and copied by other nations in the world. Kris becomes a leading edge technology behind a wealth of the art and culture owned by Indonesia. Thus, it becomes one of the prideful characteristics of the nation. “Technology of metal-

lurgy has been already known by Indonesian people since thousands of years ago. Then, it was used to create a dagger wrapped in a high taste being inherent in every region in Indonesia,” said Ngurah Panji. At the closing of the exhibition, Deputy Regent of Tabanan, Komang Gede Sanjaya, received a kris dagger named the ‘Kris Naga Kemanten Tangguh Mojopahit’ from senior figure of Anom Tabanan Palace, I Gusti Ngurah Raka Wiratma. Deputy Regent Sanjaya was then given the opportunity to hand over the award to participants. Among them, there were I Gusti Ngurah Gde Mulyawan from Kerambitan Grand Palace and supporting participant of the exhibition from Setyaki 9 Community Denpasar. Kris is a precious cultural heritage of Indonesia. It contains high metallurgy technique, cultural sensation, perseverance and high philosophy, so that it becomes a masterpiece. Thus, it is not wrong when the UNESCO gives special recognition to kris. “This exhibi-

Sabar first started making the bamboo music windmill due to his fad to combine windmill and the rhythm of bamboo gamelan. He got the inspiration to make it after a quick look at a windmill generating a rhythm on a street in the Ubud area. “The inspiration was obtained long time ago around 1991 when still working in Denpasar. However, I have just pursued this craft since the past two years. There is no specific study, but I did it autodidactically,” he explained. When he first made the music windmill, he had no business orientation. He gave the homemade music windmill to residents who are fond of the sound of traditional music. But over time, his work interests many people. It is evident from many orders received. “Now, it is booming. I get quite a lot of orders and get overwhelmed,” he said. Among the three types of rhythms he makes so far, the rhythm of angklung and baleganjur get the most enthusiasts. The orders are not only from the region of Bali, but also from outside Bali such as Manado and Solo. He sells the bamboo music windmill for IDR 300,000-600,000 each. “The difficulty of making this craft only happens when setting the appropriate tone,” he added. B N (BTN/kmb)

Tourism village in the future will be handled by cooperative. With the presence of cooperative in every tourism village, the tourism pie will be really enjoyed by people of Bali. Unlike today, it tends to be dominated by investors. In addition, the handling by cooperative will also prevent the entry of industrialization of tourism to villages. Land conversion can also be reduced for the purposes of tourism and economic interests in general.

Similar opinion was delivered by a member of Commission II, A.A. Ngurah Adhi Ardhana. Cooperative is considered to provide the benefits equally. Besides, it can minimize business competition at villages and will be able to bring in impact on rural industrialization. “We counsel and find aspirations in order to get seriousness from the ministry in developing the sector so that Bali could get the blessing of tourism pie more evenly and uniformly, communally not personally at village,” he said. In the meantime, the Bali Tourism Office targets the development of 100 tourism villages until 2018. Until 2016, there have been 64 tourism villages having been developed. Through tourism villages, Balinese people are expected to enjoy the results of tourism. “Tourism activities should give the results to them. We may not change the landscape of the region. During the festival, everyone is invited to visit the Papagarang Traditional village which has many unique attractions. The village is located in the midst between Labuan Bajo, Komodo Island, and Rinca Island (Komodo, Rinca, and Padar Islands are the only three islands in the world in the Komodo National Park where Komodo dragons are still to be found roaming in the wild). Here, discover the unique cluster of sandy islands called the Nine islands which together form the number nine shape, where in its midst you can find Jellyfish trapped in the lagoon. Here is also the traditional fishing village of the Bajo and Sape ethnic groups. Having a long tradition of seafaring across the Indonesian archipelago, the village features distinct stilt houses, you will see people drying fish and squid, while rows of traditional boats are parked along the beach. Whereas, at the western coast of the village, you will meet “mermaids” the unique sea creatures called dugongs. Rich in seaweed, dugongs find rich nutrients in this area, the sight of which, of course, offers a rare, one of a kind spectacle for visitors. Meanwhile, to further promote the wonders of the Komodo National Park, the Ministry of Tourism will feature the Park during the Boots Dusseldorf 2017 sales mission and at other of world’s leading travel and trade shows like the Internationale Tourismus-Börse or ITB Berlin, to be held from 7th to 12th March 2017 in Germany. Accessibility to Komodo has also been improved with larger and more up-to-date airport at the city of Labuan Bajo, main entry port to the National Park. In April 2017, Boeing 737-800 type aircrafts will be able to land at Labuan Bajo’s Komodo Airport, while further development in infrastructures and facilities continue to be made. In order to ensure the protection of the habitat of the endangered Komodo lizards, it is, nonetheless made sure that the airport is still located sufficiently far from the Komodo islands. It takes around 3 hours by boat to reach Rinca and Komodo islands from Labuan Bajo. B N

Blangsinga waterfall has three strategic and unique locations. The first part is located at the edge of the river with ‘stone water’ namely the spring coming out from chunks of boulder. Local people believe it has healing quality for sprains and fractures. “Cows, pigs or other livestock experiencing fractures are usually invoked ‘medicine’ at this shower,” said I Ketut Sudarpa, one of the management officers. This river is also taken advantage by housewives who have just given birth to a baby because it is believed to give peace to their baby. Large and small rocks are naturally lined. This location is commonly used by visitors to play with rocks by piling them from large to small, like temples. In the meantime, in the middle of part the atmosphere becomes more challenging. Visitors can sit on chunks of the local cliff while enjoying the waterfall flowing to the bottom of the river. Travelers choose this location to take pictures as being very close to waterfall and cliff. Beautiful scenery is also taken advantage by photographer as a pre-wedding photo session. It can be creatively combined with a variety of supporting facilities, such as umbrella and other tools. Besides, teens or young couples choose this place for a casual chat because it is very beautiful. From this area, visitors can also see the beauty of rainbow from the mouth of the cave around 10:00 and in the afternoon around 16:00 seen from

t is one of the fabulous waterfall on the island that is located in the village of Munduk, north Bali. The path down to the waterfall is densely planted with clove and coffee trees as well as Avocado, Taro, Banana and some Durian tree. You can have such a great exercise while learning about the local farm and getting to know better of the local vegetation along the path down to the mighty waterfall. Munduk lies on the altitude of about 800 meters above sea level is offering such a fresh mountain air and far out of pollution. Amongst a number of waterfalls in Bali, Munduk would offer you a chance to really enjoy its beauty as it is not being so commercial yet, no one would bother you with buying things as at most of the tourist sites on the island. There are a few waterfalls here and if you want to do further exercise, you can easily walk up the hill side from this waterfall and get down on the other side of the hilly village and walk down to another one that is quit as high as this one. The walk will offer you a great view to the coastal line of the northern Bali. BTN

beneath the cave. The third strategic location lies in the bottom of the river, namely the main waterfall. Visitors can feel the power of water falling from a height. Sometimes they also rejoice while taking bath, splashing or just washing their legs. Here, visitors can take pictures or selfie. “This location is also good for location of pre-wedding photo session,” said Sudarpa while pointing out a unique location to take pictures. Travelers from Europe, Australia and Asia mostly prefer this location. They mingle with domestic travelers from Surabaya, Jakarta, Kalimantan

and Flores. Together with children, relatives and friends, they play with rocks, feel the coolness of water and walk on the bamboo bridge. “On a normal day, more visitors are foreigners. But on national holidays, they will be usually dominated by domestic travelers,” he said. Sudarpa added that the location of Blangsinga waterfall was formerly renowned as a place to play bungee jumping. This object is managed by Blangsinga customary village, but its operation is entrusted to 11 professionals consisting of local villagers. “The waterfall was initially favored by cycling travelers,

now it has been well-known and crowded,” he explained. Formerly, it was named Srogsogan waterfall. Over the time, after visited by many visitors it is better known as Blangsinga waterfall. Based on the agreement of Blangsinga village residents and management, it was then made walkway heading for the riverbed. It is financed by village treasury and ticket sales. Then, the income of managing this object is also allocated for rural development, such as ceremonies and physical development. BTN

Bali, according to Cok Ace, faces many challenges including conversion of land use, diminishing natural resources in particular fresh water, development of emerging destinations as competitors, the increase in number of tourist coupled with the decrease in length of stay, the widening gap in tourism development among the regions, as well as the shift from service-based to knowledge based tourism. Increased traffic, said Cok Ace, does not necessarily mean increased welfare for all. “Bali must take a unified stance to answer these challenges,” he added. One of the strategies to face said challenges is by creating a synergy between the tourism industry and the culture, so deeply rooted in Balinese’s way of life. Cok Ace suggests that we should see Bali holistically, and tourism must be well-managed to create a mutually beneficial relationship among all stakeholders in tourism and hospitality. Not only do we have to create a harmonious relationship our guests, but we also have to maintain such harmonious relationship with the Creator, with the environment, and with

each other. “Bali is the Island of God,” asserts Cok Ace, “with all its beauty and imperfections”. We must strive to manage what is given well using a holistic approach, just as UNDHIRA is seeking to become a center for

holistic higher education in which students are not only equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills, but also the integrity and virtues to become truly responsible human beings. BTN (BTN/015)

Klabang or Klangsah labang is a cane work made from mature coconut leaves (slepan) whose branch is still intact so that it looks like a piece of wall. In each religious ceremony in Bali, this kind of webbing must be always present so that we are very easy to find it. It consists of two words, namely kala and abang. Kala can be interpreted as the force of God tending to lead to the nature of asuri sampad (demonic nature). In the meantime, the word abang can be interpreted as the Lord Brahma who has the power of creation in creating protection. So, Balinese Hindu community believes that kelabang can provide protection from destructive forces. It can be seen from every implementation of religious ceremonies in Bali where ritual facilities and infrastructure are usually placed on the building whose wall or roof is made of halved kelabang known as Bale Tetaring. In general, there are several types of kelabang, namely kelabang wong-wongan, kelabang dangap-dangap, kelabang taring, kelabang mantri, kelabang sengkui and kelabang losok. B N (BTN)

Danau Poso and then turn southward into Jalan Sekar Waru and then turn right to the T-junction and encounter a large banyan tree in the middle and then turn left. Ultimately, you will arrive on Mertasari Beach. Mertasari Beach is an ideal place for relaxing, while bathing, swimming or sunbathing on the white sand. In the late 1976, this beach was used to sunbathe by tourists while facing east at sunrise. When exploring the coast, we will see many travelers lying down along the white sandy beach, bathing in sunlight or they call it sunbathing. On certain days, Mertasari Beach will be thronged by a myriad of visitors. Moreover, on Umanis Kuningan that coincides with Sunday, it will be very crowded. Hindu people of Bali will cross to Serangan Island to pray at Sakenan Temple. So, do not to miss this rare opportunity. BTN

Bali Museum eji temple is located in Sangsit Village, Sawan, approximately 8 km east of the town of Singaraja, about 500 meters from the road that leads to the nearby beach. This temple belongs to the local subak memebrs of Snagsit Village and is situated in the middle of rice fields. One of the unique features of this temple is the characteristically North Balinese, Buleleng style decorative vine and floral motifs that adorn Beji Temple. Beji Temple is used to venerate Dewi Sri (Goddess Sri) –the goddess associated with agriculture. In fact Dewi Sri is believed to have created rice – the staple food of Bali. The people of Sangsti village commonly refer to this neighbourhood as ‘Subak Temple’ and was was formerly the king of Buleleng’s own area. The entire neighborhood is impressively decorated with carvings of propagating plants and floral motifs typical of the fifteenth century King of Majapahit’s style. The entrance gates of the temple compound are also decorated with two dragons that guard the temple. BTN

langsinga waterfall at Blahbatuh, Gianyar, can become your alternative destination other than beaches. This nature tourism becomes a favorite tourist spot visited by domestic and foreign travelers. Other than water recreation, visitors can also watch the beauty of rainbow and feel the atmosphere of Petanu River. The waterfall has the height of about 12.5 meters. The water flows swiftly and becomes a very pretty place to take pictures. For those who like spiritual atmosphere, it is perfectly appropriate destination because around the Petanu River sits some places sanctified by local residents. So, do not be surprised when every morning many travelers do meditation or yoga at this location. Blangsinga waterfall has been equipped with amenities such as a spacious parking lot, gazebo to unwind, toilet, canteen and a concrete pathway to get to the river bed. The cool and peaceful atmosphere for the whole trip is entertained by the melodious

Museum of Ancient Man ince 1963, Indonesian archeological experts including Prof Dr. R Soejono and Prof. Dr. T Jacob have been conducting research in the area of Gilimanuk. Their studies revealed hundreds of human skeletons dating from the end of the prehistoric age and have all the hallmark features of the mongoloid race. Based on these findings, in 1993 the government of Jembrana established the Museum of Ancient Man at Gilimanuk as a way to preserve and utilize these archeological findings. The collection on display in the Museum are the results of excavations conducted in the area and include human skeleton, beads, wood and shell bracelets, small pots, jars, jugs, earthen bowls, hooks, trowels, a sarcophagus and other fascinating items. BTN

The fish are purchased from fisherman in Bali Strait and the Gilimanuk Bay. “From the beginning, we had warned fishermen

He added that the seven sharks were formerly purchased from fisherman with the size of 30 cm to 40 cm. Having been looked after for a few months, their size reaches 80 cm. Thus, they are strong enough to be released. “We hope the fishermen not to take and kill the rare fish. Instead, they must preserve the fish for the future,” he affirmed. BTN (BTN/kmb)

During the period of December 2017 - March 2018, the harbor will be visited by several cruise ships with a length of over 300 meters. To deal with it, his authority will use floating pontoon to moor. The ships that cannot moor at the harbor will be diverted to the pontoon and then smaller boat will be used to transport passengers. “The pier whose primary function serves as freight loading and unloading will be extended in 2018. Breasting dolphin will be built within 100

meters in 2018,” said Rusly. Head of the Buleleng Tourism Office, I Nyoman Sutrisna, said the arrival of cruise ships is a new opportunity for tourism development in North Bali. It can be used as a promotion of the existing attractions. “The pier extension plan as a part of the effort to bring in larger ships is very positive and expected to be realized,” he hoped. This moment can be functioned as a promotion. Passengers inside must also be visiting a number of local tourist attractions such as Pemuteran, Gitgit, Gedong Kirtya and Munduk. “If larger ships can moor, the potential tourist visit may increase,” he said.

Commission II will even consult directly to the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs in Jakarta. “We are going to change their mindset as well as their understanding

about tourism, sanitation and environment, including following up the habit in society whether in the estate or agricultural field. That’s the point,” he explained. The festival will be highlighted with exciting events that include a socalled Komodo Parade, a Photography Competition, Beach Volley, Boat Rowing Competitions, the Komodo Beauty Pageant, Workshops, Handicrafts Exhibition, Art and Music Performances, and a whole lot more. This will be the perfect opportunity for you to explore the spellbinding beauty of Labuan Bajo and the islands in the Komodo National Park along with their pristine white sandy beaches and even a pink beach, extraordinary underwater life, impressive scenery, and of course the unique culture of the local people themselves. B N

lurgy has been already known by Indonesian people since thousands of years ago.

Where to Go....

B

tradition named Mebuug-buugan on the day after the celebration of Nyepi (Ngembak Geni).

Bayung Gede Village ayung Gede village belongs to village in Bali whose B ancient charms remain to be preserved to date. Then, Bayung Gede village was developed into a new tourism village approximately in 2010.

The tradition of treating placenta in the coconut shell has been going on for hundreds of years ago.

their visit to other destination.

Travelers can divert

(BTN/015)
