Then, he resumed his journey eastward. As soon as arriving on a beautiful hilly area exuding a strong spiritual vibration, precisely in the southwest of Kutuh customary village, Dang Hyang Nirartha along with his entourage took a short break to unwind. The arrival of maharishi was welcomed enthusiastically by the local community. They took the opportunity to meet him in person and ask religious directions and guidance. He was also willing to help people by putting up the stick of his umbrella. Due to spiritual power he possessed, a holy water suddenly spurted from the location where the stick of the umbrella was stuck. The water source is known as kubung suci by local communities and located in the innermost courtyard of the Gunung Payung Temple functioned as a holy headspring. Before leaving the village to resume his pilgrimage, Dang Hyang Nirartha provided advice to local people to always keep the amrita water coming out from where he stuck the umbrella handle. umbul Park attraction located at Sangeh village, Abiansemal, Badung, presents creative show. The fragmentary show entitled “Mystical Mumbul Water Park” was presented by Pancer Langiit Studio at Bali Creative Performance Parade in the series of Bali Mandara Nawanatya 2017 at Ksiraarnawa Building, Art Center Denpasar, Saturday (Nov. 18). Young artists coalesced into the Pancer Langiit Studio came with innovative and maximal appearance. They did not only rely on a strong character of the dance flexibility, but was also supported by distinctive costumes designed very artistically. Besides, they utilized the property in order to create spectacular performances. All that creativities are inseparable from the creative art director, Agung Rahma Putra. The ritual of Sangeh village community in glorifying water becomes interesting when transformed into dance movement looking esthetic, dynamic and rhythmic. Presentation of the Pancer Langiit Studio is worth watching and filled with moral messages to improve awareness of the art lovers so as to be more concerned about environmental sustainability. Sang Oman serving as the narrator delivered the opening dialogue to describe the behavior of some Balinese people that do not care about the environment, so that it results in pollution everywhere. Water as a source of life is not free from pollution due to human behavior using technology products unwisely. Facing such a reality, the Goddess of Water is weeping bitterly. The next storyline moved into the past that described the contrary conditions. In the period was described where water was so glorified, guarded, preserved and exploited wisely. For example, the emergence of Mumbul Park at Sangeh village is closely associated with the development of Mengwi Kingdom. From the past to the present, the Mumbul Park is known to have the Mandala Tirtha concept becoming the center for Sangeh village community life.

alinese Hindus commonly practice a number of different rituals as expressions of gratitude for the graces bestowed upon them by God. The nyambutin series of rituals make up one such ceremony that is conducted with sincerity for babies with the hope of having grace bestowed upon the family. As Jro Mangku Nurata explained, while officiating over a tutug kambuhan ritual recently, Nyambutin or nelubulanin (meaning 3 months) ceremonies are held for babies 105 days after they are born which is 3 months according

to the Balinese calendar. God is asked to provide protection for the young human. Part of this ceremony includes giving the baby a name and clarifying the meaning of this name. Most notably this is the first time that the baby’s feet are allowed to touch the earth.

“According to Hindu tradition, babies are only allowed to have their feet touch the ground once they are three months old as this is when they start being able to sit up by themselves”, explained Jro Mangku. The Nyambutin, ceremony said Jro Mangku is a way to welcome the baby into the world and show gratitude in a ritual called pangenteg bayu in which water is given to Mother Earth in the hopes that the baby is given a long life. The Nyambutin ceremony is classified as a Manusa Yadnya (rite of passage) ceremony and is carried out with the hope the baby and their family will be prosperous and have a good life. The baby’s placenta will usually have been buried in the family yard and it is in this same area that the Nyambutin ceremony is held with the baby’s parents actively taking part in all the rituals involved. This ceremony is dedicated to Bhatara Surya (Lord of the Sun), Ibu Pertiwi (Mother Earth) and Bhatara-Bhatari (deities of the household), explained Jero Mangku Nurata. “The aim is to ask that the baby be guided and safeguarded”, he said. Hoteliers Asked to Cooperate with SMEs aking a hotel eco-friendly requires more than just having the hotel grounds be green. The concept of ‘eco-friendly, needs to be implemented thoughtfully in the daily operations of the entire business. Local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) for example should be invited to develop along with the hotel. “I am grateful to the Denpasar Green Hotel team that has been providing coaching for hotels”, said the Head of Denpasar Tourism Office, M. A. Dezire Mulyani, on Wednesday (Nov. 15) during a meeting with Team Leader of Green Hotel team and Chief Editor of Bali Travel News, Gde Palgunadi along with Dr. Ketut Sumadi and other team members. Mulyani said that hotels and other tourist accomodations, need to pay attention to their environment in the broadest sense of the term. According to the Balinese concept known as Tri Hita Karana, attention should be given to maintaining harmonious relations with the natural environment as well as with other humans and Creator. In the context of the serious problems that the natural environment is currently facing, waste management must a top priority. Along with the 140 other criteria that comprise the concept of Green Hotels as outlined by the Ministry of Tourism for the City of Denpasar, local culture has been added as an important component. “Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) should also be added to this list”, said Mulyani. Hotel management can help to promote Denpasar’s local handy-craft products by displaying them in the rooms, the lobby and other strategic places in their hotel. Such products could include tissue boxes, sculptures, ashtrays, endek cloth and other

hese young artists were not only good at playing Balinese gamelan music instruments, but also skilled in dancing. While playing gamelan instrument, they were also singing. They danced to form a formation, according to the needs of the composition theme. Uniquely, they sometimes described the theme through song, dance, composition, other than through gamelan music. That’s the action of young artists in the baleganjur gamelan contest for the level of junior

high school, high school and general public throughout Bali held by the government of Badung in a series of Badung Cultural Festival (FSB) XI 2017. The contest centered at outermost courtyard of Lingga Bhuwana Temple, Badung Civic Center, was also meant to enliven the eighth anniversary of Badung capital, Mangupura. The baleganjur contest opened on Monday (Nov. 13) lasted for three days. On the first day was the session for junior high school level with five art troupes and high school with seven art troupes. On the second day was featured 15 art troupes from general public category and the third day also presented 15 art troupe of general public category. Appearance of the participants got applause from the audience because they were able

to present the best composition. Each participant is able to present interesting musical composition and become an attractive show. Bearers of decorative spears, umbrellas and gebogan (flower and fruit arrangement) commonly appear as complements were presented as the part of the composition, so the display became an intact artistic show. Music with energetic rhythm was followed by dance movements and live art formations. All the composers also considered the variety of costumes, makeup and provision of additional property to support the atmosphere. The composition entitled Pemungkas presented huge ogoh-ogoh (papier máché demon) to describe creepy atmosphere. Baleganjur entitled Konta Wijaya and Gatotkaca played various musical striking instruments resulting in strange sounds. While the baleganjur entitled Jebo Jereng played more tempo, and showed ornaments of musical instruments. Then, the baleganjur entitled Ciung Wenara showed gamelan game without using tempo. Skillfulness and dexterity are really

required, so the presentation of gamelan art troupe received a remarkable welcome. This baleganjur contest featured the heroism theme. The form of composition still maintains the structure of gamelan art, but can be developed from tradition (into contemporary version), in accordance with the ability possessed. In other words, gamelan players are allowed to make their own creation with non-traditional instruments. Each participant was given duration for 7-8 minutes

Also, hotels can contribute to strengthening the economic empowerment of Denpasar’s artisans through Coprporate Social Responsibilty (CSR) programs. “For example, by supporting endek producers in their production process, their woven works can then be displayed in the hotel daily or during special promotional events. Similarly craftspeople can be encouraged to recycle waste into consumer goods”, she added.

Dezire Mulyani emphasized that it is important that cooperation between the Denpasar Tourism Office and Bali Travel News as organizers, along with Green Hotel and other experts, continues to be supported. “This coaching program will continue in 2018 as it is an effective way of bringing awareness to people about the importance of taking an eco-friendly approach to developing sustainable tourism. Everyone from hotel owners and operators and well as other tourism players and the general public need to address these important issues” affirmed Mulyani. (BTN/015)

“Dari Masa Ka Rasa”

Indonesian Contemporary Artists Embrace Holistic Approach

BTN/sri

rt has always been produced in the context of a given era and the particular conditions that the artist finds themselves in. Whether an artists chooses to produce art which specifically references this era and conditions or whether they choose to focus on more general ideas or even their own feelings and perceptions, the era in which they make their art nonetheless informs their art. Such referencing has become highly conceptualized - some say to the determent of the artistry of art. As art writer and curator Rain Rosidi explains in the catalogue of the Dari Masa ka Rasa exhibition , modern art was born out of a reaction to the Romantic movement that placed man at the centre of the universe and emphasized imaginary settings and personal feelings with little regard for or reference to the world around them. Their technical mastery yielded highly realist landscapes and figures yet remained devoid of any commentary on these subjects., which according to critics is the primary task of the artist- to share their perception of conditions and context. Whereas fine art is fundamentally based on a mastery of technic, as modern art sought to develop more critical approaches to art production this eventually led to contemporary art that increasingly moved so far into the conceptual that techique and aesthetic beauty were often abandoned altogether. In reaction such extreme conditions in the art world, artists Agung Tato (Surabaya), Angga Sukma Permana (Yogyakarta), Agustan (Jakarta), M. Muhlis Lugis (Makasar), and Made Ddwi Kenak Adyana (Bali) have come together to restore balance. The five artists that make up art collective ‘Segi Tiga’ first joined forces on the campus of ISI Yogyakarta where they were studying for their masters degrees in FIne Arts. Their lengthly and ongoing verbal and graphic exchanges at that time -which naturally were informed by the theoretical basis of their studies, led them to a shared desire to

comment on the current conditions of contemporary art in Indonesia through their art works. Although each artist came to the table with a different background, style and method, they shared a vision of creating art works that combined critical, conceptual, technical and aesthetic elements, without any of these elements being at the expense of the other. Humanity has seen various changes in the conditions in which we live and thus our perception of the world and the place of art. From the cave paintings of early man to the highly conceptual art works in vogue today, art is constantly developing according to the era in which artists live, said Ro-

sidi. It is up to the artist to share their perception of such conditions, which can be done in myriad ways as witnessed by the variety of technics, subject matter and concepts expressed by the five artists in this exhibition. As Art Writer I Made Susanta Dwitanya eloquently put it in his introductory words of the exhibition catalogue, the title Dari Masa ka Rasa (from era to feeling), can be interpreted as a reference to the personal journey of these five artist from the era or time and space of their formal studies to the feelings they shared with one and other informally on campus. It can also be read as a reference to ‘era’ as the natural cycles of nature from day

to night and season to season that delineate time in space to the personal journey of humans through these cycles of their own personal life. Or, further still the exhibition title ‘from era to feelings’ can be interpreted as a commentary on Indonesia Contemporary Art, with these five artists serving as representatives of the journey from the ‘era’ of formal or theoretical conceptual explorations of art, to the personal sharing they have been engaged in which led them to more technique-based, personal and critical explorations of their artistic expression. Perhaps more generally ‘from era to feeling’ can be read as an invitation for all humans to move into their heart space so as to choose a more holistic approach to contemporary conditions so as to find solutions to the challenges we all face. All five artist show clear technical mastery of the art of painting and although each artist expresses this mastery in their own unique personal style, they also each express a particular vision or commentary on present conditions, whether political, environmental or aesthetic, Despite the strong emphasis on technique and com-

mentary, the basis on which art is founded - aesthetic beauty as an expression of intangible feelings remains a distinct feature in all the art works of ‘Dari Masa ka Rasa’ which is on display at Griya Santrian Gallery, Sanur (Jalan Danau Tamblingan, Sanur) until December 31st, 2017. It is also worth noting that this is the last exhibition of Griya Santrian Gallery’s 15th year running. This gallery, that has provided a space for Balinese contemporary art to become better known to the public for 15 years, deliberately chose to have their end of year exhibition feature artists from all over Indonesia. Although this is not the first time that artists from outside Bali have exhibited in this space, this particular exhibition speaks to the increasingly dynamic range of Balinese contemporary art and the national art context that is informed by and which informs art in Bali. Dari Masa Ka Rasa shows a promising start to a new era for Griya Santrian Gallery for its next 15 years, and perhaps for contemporary Indonesia art in general, which may start to embrace both feeling and critical commentary again as a valuable component of the nations art. Estepers Holds Hospitality Talk: Indonesia Tourism Outlook 2018

Gde Palgunadi palgunadigde@yahoo.com okingly, people may analogize the intermarriages between nations, races or whatever the term to ‘milk coffee’ marriage. It is simply the matter of, sorry, skin color or race. We do not have intention to be racialist. Indeed, this is the reality. As the name implies, it is only joke that often makes our hearts intrigued. The term ‘coffee’ applies to dark or brown skin color. In Bali, it surely refers to Balinese themselves. Some Balinese people have no dark skin or brown skin but clean white. Meanwhile, the term ‘milk’ refers to strangers. Actually, it could be European, American, Japanese, Australian, Chinese and so forth. In short, they are strangers. However, this mostly refers to the white-skinned, sharp-nosed, blue-eyed, golden-yellow Westerners and so on. Anyway they are from the Caucasus race. These are their physical characterizes. The ‘coffee’ could be a man or woman and so can the ‘milk’ can be a man and a woman. Jokingly, what is the reason for

The alumni association of STP Nusa Dua Bali (Estepers) and Estepers Executive Club (EEC) Association organized the third Hospitality Talk entitled ‘Indonesia Tourism Outlook 2018’ with the theme of ‘Leveraging Creativity through Emotional Revolution in the Tourism Industry.’ The regular activity held for third time was opened by Deputy Overseas Marketing Division of Ministry of Tourism, Prof. Dr. I Gde Pitana, at Ayodya Resort, Nusa Dua - Badung, Friday (Nov. 17).

this intermarriage? Similarly, the answer can be joking: ‘to improve the offspring.’ It’s a joking answer. Later on, if the baby is born from the ‘coffee’ side, it can have higher physical characteristics, white skin color, sharp nose and so on. Does it improve the quality of the offspring? But in truth, if observed, there is certainly a more ‘scientific’ reason of this phenomenon. It is a kind of acculturation, there is a perspective on equality in appreciating each other. This condition definitely appears not without cause. There are seeds of love broadcast. After that, they are replanted, fertilized, watered and then thrived. Then, it blooms and then bears fruits. Like the rules of nature, there are seeds that die, wither before having the opportunity to bloom. Some bear fruits tasting sour or bitter. Not all bear sweet fruits. This kind of trend remains to exist until these days. The motive may be shifting. It is not necessarily about love. There is a business or economic interest inside it. Or maybe there are some other reasons. Most importantly, there must be love, not just transactional marriage for the sake of economic-business interests. So, taking care of a marriage must also be done through synergy. It is the same as maintaining the Bali tourism today. Various human races exist inside it. There are Balinese, Javanese, English, Australian, Japanese race and so forth. They are multi-religions, multi-races, multi-tribes and so on. It needs proper approach to manage it. The milk must be not too much or too little and so must be the coffee. Do not be too much or vice versa. Mix them to get the right and nice taste, so it will be comfortable to sip. What a true coffee-milk blend it is! B N

Faisal Basri (economic and political observer) and Uun Setiawan (Vice President of Garuda Indonesia for Asia Region). Chairman of the Hospitality Talk organizer or the Indonesia Tourism Outlook 2018 seminar, I Made Ramia Adnyana, said the annual ITO seminar held this year is a continuous contribution of the STP Bali alumni playing an active role in supporting the tourism of Bali and Indonesia as leading sec-

tor. “The theme of Leveraging Creativity through Emotional Revolution in the Tourism Industry is expected to respond to challenges in emerging industries, such as technological advancement and price competition to bring the expert and well-known speakers,” he said. This activity, explained Ramia Adnyana, is a medium that becomes an important indicator in Bali and Indonesia to expose the picture or prediction of business map and next year planning, so that the seminar participants gain direction to their business strategy at the right target and maximum potential. “Keynote speakers or resource persons in this seminar provide material exposures on business strategies needed in the development of the tourism industry,” he added. According to Ramia Adnyana, tourism entrepreneurs must prepare a mature strategy and future business plans that are not only in the form of figures showing the improvement, but must be supported by strategic factors. One of them is the direction of promotion or potential market that will be tackled by the government with consideration of the country’s economic and political situation that affects business growth, the latest tourism trends and accessibility available to the global market. “Results of this seminar are expected to motivate business players to be more confident in facing business competition and challenges in the future,” said Ramia. Taking Selfie at the Black Bamboo Tower og was descending on Wanagiri village, Sukasada, Buleleng, when we arrived and soon it started to drizzle and cool air swept in, even though it was high noon. Although the weather was not ideal for taking pictures, we were enthusiastic about taking selfies at the Black Bamboo Tower. This location is one of eight selfie attractions in the customary hamlet of Bhuana Sari, in Wanagiri Village. The iconic Black Bamboo Tower stands on the edge of a cliff by the side of the road with Lake Bunyan and verdant hills as a backdrop. Operator of Bhuana Sari customary hamlet, Ketut Darma, said that bamboo belonging to the local customary village was used to make the iconic selfie attraction and that three security guards are on duty everyday to ensure the security of the increasing number of visitors who come to Black Bamboo Tower. “On a quiet day we get about 30-40 visitors but on holidays

F

there is a 80 percent increase in the number of people who come to take pictures here. According to the customary hamlet’s agreement, visitors are charged IDR 15,000 per person to take as many pictures as they want”, explained Darma. Black Bamboo Tower is not the only selfie attraction at Bhuana Sari customary hamlet. There are four other selfie spots along 15 meters of this road each offering a different style and which support one and other. There are plans to build another one soon so that more visitors can be accommodated. “Security is guaranteed. Yesterday, a subdistrict police chief investigated the location and determined that it was safe”, said Darma. Asah’s hamlet Panji, Ketut Suwena, said that all of the selfie attractions that have been developed over th past 7 years in Wanagiri Village are actually located in protected forest areas. However, the local villages submitted a request to the National Resources Conservation Agency

(BKSDA) asking that they be allowed to utilize this area. So far, the BKSDA has granted one selfie tourist attraction per customary hamlet. Wanagiri village has 4 customary hamlets namely; Bhuana Sari, Yeh Ketipat, Asah Panji Kaja, and Asah Panji Kelod. “In short, of the eight selfie attractions in Wanagiri village, only the ones at Bhuana Sari customary hamlet have been granted permission by the BKSDA. The others have no agreement with the customary village’s selfie-site management group”, said Suwena. According to Suwena, the BKSDA has limited the number of selfie-sites to four and has stipulated that such sites should not be managed by individuals or private groups as this could lead to jealousy. This limit is also meant to prevent a saturation of such sites as this could create chaos as lead to possible security risks. “Let the BKSDA determine the limits on such buildings including how far they can jut out off the cliff,

R

how they should be designed and so forth. So far only Bhuana Sari has been given the ok from the BSKDA”, explained Suwena. Division Head of Tourist Destinations for the Bali Tourism Office, Ida Bagus Adi Laksana, said he strongly supports local people creating selfie tourist attractions adding that management

issues should be resolved through discussions. Each village should also have clear guidelines so as to prevent the mushrooming of such sites. “Hopefully such guidelines can be made clear by governing bodies that will be established under village authorities. Management groups should be involved”, he said. BTN (BTN/kmb)

perience. Sugi Lanus, for example, has successfully developed a number of villages in Bali into tourist attractions, including Nyambu Village. Headman of Marga Dajan Puri, Made Rasma, said that creating a tourism village by turning people’s homes into homestays needs to take certain things into consideration such providing clean toilets. “With tourist staying overnight, local residents will not only benefit from renting out rooms but also by selling food for breakfast. Tourists can also mingle with members of the local community like carvers

and decorative plant hobbyists”, added Rasma. Sugi Lanus explained that people’s homes do not necessarily have to be luxurious but that bathrooms certainly do need to meet the standards of travelers. Lanus showed examples of people’s homes that are rented out to tourists in Japan and other countries. Gede Sumarjaya Linggih said he is ready to help develop this tourism village by developing the charms and culture of Marga Dajan Puri village. BTN (BTN/015)

ocated on Menjangan’s most southeasterly point, Pos II can be beach-entry or boat-entry, and is usually driftdiving: whether beach or boat, the dives start at 12M, where the white sand slope meets the top of the wall. If there is a current, it is generally north-easterly. Slowly descending along the wall, drifting with the current, to approx 25M (max depth 50M+) we see a profusion of soft corals, sponges, small gorgonians, moray eels and lionfish. Levelling out at 25M, the current takes us along the wall to the east point of the island, a dramatic area covered in large gorgonians. Here, where we meet the waters travelling down the north-east of Menjangan, there is an upwelling of cold waters from the deep ocean. This brings with it turtle, Manta Ray, shark, occasional Mola-Mola and other pelagics. We, of course also encounter thermoclines here. Our safety stop is done above the remains of the coral reef (8-12M). As there is quite a population of Titan Triggerfish in the area, we need to choose our spot carefully. Very occasionally we find that the current is actually heading west. Almost immediately you find an area where, if the conditions are right, you can see pelagics. Descending slowly along the wall, the diversity of reef fish is remarkable: angelfish, anthias, chromis, gobies, scorpionfish. The surface of the wall is full of crevasses, cracks and overhangs which hide many treasures. There is the occasional cave too. BTN

is a form of gratitude implemented by the Denpasar municipality in an effort to continue the development in Denpasar City. Wasan Temple Projected for Spiritual Tourist Attraction time ago, the Bali, NTB, and NTT Archaeological Institute returned to research by taking the position of excavation in the northeast of Wasan Temple Site. This 24th research stage involved 12 researchers to find the supporting buildings of Wasan Temple. In previous research was found archeological items with fundamental in nature in the form of a temple with stone structure having the foot length of 11 meters, width of 8 meters, and height of 13 meters as well as a pond measuring 22 meters long, 7 meters wide and 3 meters depth. This research also involved about five supporting devotees (pengempon) of the local temple, especially in the excavation of the land. Once everything is revealed, Wasan Site

located amid the paddy fields of Subak Wasan is projected to be a spiritual tourist attraction. “This research is a continuation of the findings of 2016. At that time was found some structural buildings made of sand stone,” said the Head of the Archaeological Institute for Bali, NTB, and NTT, I Gusti Made Suarbawa. He has not been able to predict the supporting buildings of the temple. However, in terms of the soil texture, the building is estimated to have been buried during a flash flood disaster. The type of floating soil also indicates if this area was also affected by volcanic ashes from the eruption of Mount Rinjani in Lombok in ancient time. Suarbawa added that the study was based on the research during the period of 1986 to 2006 that found archaeological remains like the temples with stone construction and a pond having been restored by Heritage Conservation Agency for Bali, NTB and NTT Region in 2009. The results of the study were followed up with the excavations from 2011 to 2017. Suarbawa said the complex of Wasan Temple Site is estimated to date from XIII-XIV AD based on statues found on Wasan site, such as four-faced Brahma statue, deity statue and Nandhi statue whose lapels are decorated with skulls. Besides, it was found the statues

of Ganesha, Lingam-Yoni, statues of embodiments and statues of animals. The finding of this Wasan Temple site is inseparable from the role of a Dutch researcher, JC Krishman, who first visited the Wasan site in 1950. At that time, he only found the mounds of land and a number of scattered ancient statues. But the temple supporting devotees still used the location for worship by establishing a simple building on it. A few years later, the Denpasar Archaeological Institute conducted an observation to the site and found some relics of statue. The observation was done by accident. In 1986, the institute was doing research in Cangi, and then on the request of residents, the Denpasar Archaeological Institute team was delivered to Wasan Site. Priest of the Puseh Wasan, Jro Mangku Wayan Lasia Siaja, 48, said that he supports the research so that people know about the history of Wasan site. Formerly, the Puseh Temple area was still a bush, but after the research it has turned into something like this. “Existence of this temple is very strategic located in the area of Denpasar-Gianyar

hyana Pura University (Undhira) does not only make young generation smart and competent, but also have character. Therefore, the International Bureau of Undhira held joint activities with Japanese language training partners and training placement agency to Japan, the SIKI Bali Foundation. This activity took place at the local campus on Monday (Nov. 13). This joint activity introduced Japanese culture to Undhira students through the making of Onigiri. It involved a total of 50 students comprising local students and foreign students from St. Andrews University Japan and

Heilbronn University Germany. They mingled and communicated each other while practicing their Japanese and English. Without exception, there was also the learning of Bahasa Indonesia for foreign students studying at Undhira. At that time, the event was also filled with dissemination of training programs in Japan for 6 months to 1 year for students, and the opportunity to work in Japan for alumni of Undhira. Overseas training opportunities are conducted to improve insight, get a good work ethic, and improve the mastery of foreign languages. Coordinator of the Interna-

tional Bureau of Undhira, Ni Luh Christine Prawita Suyasa, said that social activities in cooperation with SIKI Bali Foundation aims to introduce Japanese culture to the students through the making of Onigiri in the form of togetherness. “One of the characters developed by Undhira is global outlook,” he said. Character, professionalism and going worldwide, explained Luh Christine, are the culmination of the seven characters of Undhira based on self-confidence, integrity and diversity, entrepreneurship and serving leadership. “The Undhira International Bureau seeks to realize that character by fostering relationships and conducting an internationalization program for students,” she said. Luh Christine added that every semester, Undhira accepts foreign students from Europe and Japan. Through this activity, it provides the opportunities for students from different countries to improve their knowledge and foreign language skills by joining International Bureau programs. Among them, there is Entrepreneurship in Another Perspective for 1 semester. B N (BTN/015)

ocated on Menjangan’s most southeasterly point, Pos II can be beach-entry or boat-entry, and is usually driftdiving: whether beach or boat, the dives start at 12M, where the white sand slope meets the top of the wall.

Organizing Committee of the Ritual, Ida Bagus Gede Pidada, said the pujawali at this time used pebangkit as well as pakelem alit to the sea. The anniversary of this time was supported by Denpasar munici-

J

“Dari Masa Ka Rasa”

Indonesian Contemporary Artists Embrace Holistic Approach

rt has always been produced in the context of a given era and the particular conditions that the artist finds themselves in.

Hotel management can help to promote Denpasar’s local handy-craft products by displaying them in the rooms, the lobby and other strategic places in their hotel. hese young artists were not only good at playing Balinese gamelan music instruments, but also skilled in dancing.

Nyambutin Ritual, First Time Baby’s Feet Touch The Earth

alinese Hindus commonly practice a number of different rituals as expressions of gratitude for the graces bestowed upon them by God.

Balinese Arts Featured in Tabanan Fiesta # 1 in Marga

abanan Fiesta #1, held in celebrations of Tabanan’s 524th anniversary was opened in Marga on Sunday (Nov. 12) with a presentation of puppet gender gamelan performed by children from Butratwangi Art Studio, Ole hamlet, Marga Dauh Puri. The Deputy Regent of Tabanan, I Komang Gede Sanjaya was then welcomed with a classical baleganjur gamelan piece entitled ‘Cangak Merengang’, that was performed by children. Two young boys and two young girls (elementary and junior high) played the puppet gender gamelan and danced according to classical norms. Their Tetekes, kotekean, nguet and tetekep were flawless and were performed full of expression. Deputy Regent Gede Sanjaya expressed his appreciation of the arts displayed by the community of Marga. “I am very proud and delighted to see these stunning performance arts. There were also Pelangi musical and dance performances, a puppet gamelan from Ole, Bumbung Gebyok from Pinge Village, and Janger from Geluntung bringing many dancers from different art studios in Tabanan together in harmony”, said Deputy Regent Sanjaya. Such innovations show the public’s enthusiasm for developing the heritages inherited from their ancestors – particularly the youth. The Janger Dance is very rarely performed in public. “I see there is harmony between the male and female dancers. It’s so beautiful and shows their vibrant happiness”, he said. Chairman of the Committee and sub-district head of Marga, I Gusti Agung Alit Adiatmika, said that he wanted to highlight the creativity of the people of Marga in Tabanan Fiesta # 1, so that people could enjoy presentations from different villages in the sub district that have not been exposed to such entertainment in a long time. In addition to music and dance performances there was also a also penjor climbing contest, storytelling, kisa making (coconut leaf basket), Balinese dance, canang sari (oblation) making and a Balinese speech contest. “These are meant to foster a love for and to preserve Balinese culture, especially for our children in Marga so that Balinese culture can continue to be maintained”, he said. Bali to Host IMF Annual Meeting, Ngurah Rai Airport Holds Simulation of Terror Action Threat gurah Rai Airport held a simulation of terror threat as part of the 15th anniversary of the International Cooperation in Countering Terrorism in Indonesia. The simulation was carried out by the Bali Police by involving 84 aviation security personnel and Airport Rescue & Fire Fighting (ARFF) of Angkasa Pura I. Police are aggressive in combating terrorist acts having the potential to threaten the security of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. For this simulation activity, Bali Police mobilized all the police elements such as bomb squad, mobile brigade, forensics, Disaster Victim Investigation (DVI) and Indonesia Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (INAFIS). “This exercise is to show

police professionalism in dealing with and combating terrorist attacks,” said Chief of Bali Police, Peter Reinhard Golose. Director of Operations of Angkasa Pura I, Wendo Asrul Rose, welcomed the exercise. “Moreover, in 2018 Bali will host the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank annual meetings that will be attended by more than 17,000 delegates, so the preparation of the practice to maintain security is very important,” said Wendo amid the simulation on Friday (Nov. 17). Heads of state and ministerial level officials and bank governors will be present and all come through Ngurah Rai Airport. Surely this exercise is useful in building coordination among the agencies. “It is to prove to the world that

we are all ready to welcome the international event, both in terms of security and services,” said Wendo. The anti-terror simulation initiated by Bali Police involved almost all agencies at Ngurah Rai Airport, such as Angkasa Pura I, Ngurah Rai Air Force Base, Airport Authority for Region IV, Airnav Denpasar Branch, Basarnas and Badung Fire Department. The simulation was also attended by Bali Governor I Made Mangku Pastika, police officers at the level of provincial police and representatives of Consulate General. “Actually we already have SOP for emergency handling as stated in the Airport Contingency Plan or ACP. Through joint exercise like this, we can also train personnel and procedures, especially in handling the threat of terror acts,” said Wendo. (BTN/015)

umbul Park attraction located at Sangeh village, Abiansemal, Badung, presents creative show.

Hyang Dwijendra. The Dharmayatra palm-leaf manuscript mentions that after coming to Uluwatu Danghyang Dwijendra provided suggestion to the surrounding community. Later on, the surrounding community established a temple at that location known as the Gunung Payung Temple. B N (BTN/kmb)
