Melasti at Tanah Lot

A Unique Moment Drawing Visitors’ Attention

anah Lot tourist attraction became the center of melasti (purificatory) ceremony ahead of Nyepi Day of Caka New Year 1940 falling on Saturday (Mar. 17). Melasti becomes a unique moment that drew the interest of tourists. When Beraban customary villagers carried out the melasti procession at Tanah Lot on Wednesday (Mar. 14), visiting tourists looked happy to witness such cultural activities. Convoy of people dressed in traditional attires upholding pratima (sanctified effigies) to Tanah Lot Beach became an interesting spectacle. All the pilgrims walked from Bale Agung Temple as a gathering place of all the sanctified effigies from all temples in the area of Beraban customary village and headed for Tanah Lot Beach. The melasti procession involved hundreds of pilgrims from fifteen customary hamlets in Beraban customary village, so that it became vibrant and interesting. Pilgrims carrying sanctified the effigies and ritual paraphernalia dipped their feet into the waters as a symbol of sanctification so the implementation of Nyepi Day runs peacefully and quietly. The purification process targets two things, namely the macrocosm (universe) and microcosm (human self). “There are 44 temples at Beraban customary village. Each temple carried its pratima, so you can imagine the parade of Beraban pilgrims performing the melasti procession to Tanah Lot will be very crowded and festive,” said Operations Manager of Tanah Lot attraction, I Ketut Toya Adnyana. During the melasti procession of Beraban customary village took place, the road from the north of Beraban to the south heading for Tanah Lot was closed for a while until pemelastian entourage arrived on Tanah Lot Beach. All visitors who were at Tanah Lot could not leave Tanah Lot and vice versa for visitors wishing to go to Tanah Lot could not pass. Toya Adnyana added that his management has been anticipating visitors and traffic from the beginning related to the melasti procession. “We have informed this procession. So tourists wishing to watch it live will definitely stay and those pursued by time tour must leave the area earlier. Besides, we have anticipated traffic control arrangement with police authority, local pecalang or customary security guard and security so that the procession can run smoothly,” he explained. Susan Carol Midllebush Likes Majejahitan Activity

ajejahitan activity, the making of Balinese Hindustyle ritual paraphernalia, becomes a special attraction for tourists. For instance, Mrs. Susan Carol Midllebush, a tourist from the United States, is so curious to majehahitan. “This activity is very interesting. I do it to be able to better understand about Balinese

culture, not just hear it,” she said after making canang sari oblation at Asana Puri Maharani Hotel Bali, Tuesday (Mar. 20). Susan Carol said that learning to make ceremonial facilities is not only able to create a sense of pleasure and sincerity but also able to create a sense of peace. “I appreciate to Balinese custom of having

a majejahitan culture, praying and ritual activities that pray for nature with everything in it. Balinese people pray for the world including myself,” she said. This former English teacher for high school admitted to have come to Bali twice, and she is very happy. Balinese people are very diverse, yet live in mutual respect for each other. Tolerance is taken up, in addition to being friendly to tourists. “I’ve been roaming around the world, but this place is the most special, honest people are very good,” said the woman born on September 26, 1940. Every vacation to Bali, Susan Carol who has traveling hobby, always chooses Asana Puri Maharani Hotel Bali. Although she had time to explore beyond Bali, she still returned to this hotel. There is a green open space, natural animals, big shade trees, staff and employees regularly performing spiritual activities. In addition to energy efficiency, it’s very perfect program,” she added.

According to her, in America there are many states, but nothing is like Bali. There are a lot of trees and people love animals. In Bali, people conserve nature. “The green hotel program must be continued. In our country, it has been taught in schools. the citta, buddhi and manas (mind). Therefore, people always behave according to clarity of mind with the foundation of religious values. With a pure mind, devotees will be able to pick and choose what is good and bad. Tumpek Landepposes veneration to Lord Shiva Pasupati as the god of taksu or divine inspiration. So, after celebrating the Sarasvati Day as the coming down of science,

people invoke in order the science will be auspicious or gives sharpness of mind and heart. On the Tumpek Landep is also performed a cleansing and purification ritual to different ancestral heritages such as keris dagger, spears and so forth. Layman often considers it the anniversary of iron or metal. However, over the period, the meaning of Tumpek Landep increasingly deviates from the true meaning. Now, the community even tends to interpret the Tumpek Landep as a ceremony for motorcycles, cars and equipment made from the iron works. Indeed, this is very much distorted. implementation of Tumpek Landep itself so that people always remember to sharpen their mind (manas), buddhi and citta. By doing so, people are expected to fight against ignorance, darkness and misery. Ritual of Tumpek Landep actually reminds people of always sharpening the mind so as to suppress the evil behavior within the self. In terms of the meaning of feast day, the ritual to motorcycles, cars or working equipment is more appropriately carried out on Tumpek Kuningan, namely as a thanksgiving for the facility gift of Supreme God. Hopefully, the facilities can help the activities and function well and safely. Tumpek Landep poses a milestone for introspection to improve the character pursuant to religious teachings. On Tumpek Landep, devotees should do worship in family shrine as well as in temple to invoke the

blessing of Lord Shiva Pasupati to be given the sharpness of mind so that we can become a useful person to society. It is also resumed with the cleaning and purification of the ancestral heritages. For the artists, Tumpek Landep is celebrated as a worship to invoke divine inspiration so the art becomes more developed, gains an appreciation from the community and ability to convey a moral and intellectual messages to educate people. Again, it is affirmed that Tumpek Landep is not ritual for motorcycles, cars, furniture or iron, but it is more about the awareness of always sharpening the mind for the welfare of mankind. It’s okay to give ritual to motorcycles, cars and so forth as a form of gratitude, but it is only the additional value. Do not let the celebration focuses on the added values, but forget the basic core of the celebration. (BTN/015)

After the Batur Natural Hot Spring and spiritual attractions of Tirta Pancoran Solas, currently Batur customary village presents a new recreation object that is not less interesting, namely the Seked Batur Water Park. The initiation ceremony, rishigana and official inauguration of Seked Batur Water Park was held on Wednesday (Mar. 14). The ceremony was attended by a number of invitees including subdistrict head, chief of subdistrict police and commander of military region of Kintamani, temple priests in Batur area, and headman of South Batur. The inauguration of Seked Batur Water

Park was marked with cutting ribbon by senior figures as well as village supervisory board of Jro Gede Batur Duwuran. President Director of Batur Village Enterprise, Wayan Absir, said the Seked Batur Water Park is presented as a choice of new tourist attraction or recreation for the community. The presence of this park is a development of several tourism business units previously established by Batur customary village such as the Batur Natural Hot Spring built in 2008, Seked Batur Restaurant (2010), Tirta Pancoran Solas (2017) and other tourism businesses. “Batur is the heart of Bali’s water civilization. ne of the descendants of Oka Palace of Kaja hamlet, Sesetan, I Gusti Ngurah Oka Putra, said the omedomedan tradition was started approximately in the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries originating from his ancestor (Batara Kompyang) denoting a senior figure of Sesetan village at that time. Ahead of Nyepi Day, his ancestor named Anak Agung Made Raka suffered a severe illness. “He was difficult to stand, let alone walk. He also forbade his citizens to visit him. However, when Nyepi arrived, residents of Kaja hamlet, Sesetan, were sad and disappointed because they were prohibited from visiting and serving him at that time. Amid the sadness and disappointment, they gathered and held tug-of-war known as omed-omedan. This is the embryo of the tradition,” said Oka Putra to Bali Post, not long ago. As a result of the incident, said this man familiarly addressed as Turah Bima, his ancestor who was sick became angry and ordered his family to take him to the front of royal palace. Perhaps, he

wanted to yell and chase away his servants as making commotion in front of the royal palace. However, when arriving at the front of royal palace, his sickness had completely gone. Immediately, he undid his intention to ban the crowds, even wanted to do in the contrary. Starting that day, the omed-omedan was held every year on Nyepi Day. At that time, people have not known the existence of catur brata penyepian (four abstinences) so that omed-omedan was still held on Nyepi Day. Oka Putra added that in line with the development of understanding on religion and interpretation of the Nyepi Day with the catur brata penyepian echoed by the government and Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI), the timing of the tradition was changed. Then, it was moved to the following day right on Ngembak Geni instead of on Nyepi Day. “This happened around the 1980s because in the past people were only abstaining from lighting fire on Nyepi,” he said. Over time, this tradition got negative assessment from outsiders. People judged the tradition of omed-omedan is

Joyful atmosphere occurred when the omed-omedan tradition took place at Kaja hamlet, Sesetan, on Sunday (Mar. 18) synonymous with mass kissing. Due to being angry with the judgment, Ngurah Oka as the heir of the originator of the tradition had banned the implementation of the omed-omedan tradition around the 1984s. “I rejected the false accusation disparaging our residents. Friction of the young people in the omed-omedan may happen, but the point is not the kissing,” he said.

Absir explained that Seked Batur Water Park has advantages compared to other water parks in general, namely the water used is natural warm water coming from Mount Batur. In this tourist object, there are various facilities offered to visitors such as water rides and villas such as bamboo huts and wooden huts. There is also a meeting room facility at the

The Seked Batur Water Park is expected to be acceptable to the public, and become an option to people getting saturated with routine activities in urban areas,” he explained. He added that in the future, the enterprise will also develop the Seked Batur Water Park by adding royal camping facilities. The facility will become superior

He hoped the presence of Seked Batur Water Park having been ritually inaugurated can be accepted by local and foreign tourists. “Hopefully, the presence of Seked Batur Water Park can be a new recreation site for people wishing to have water recreation,” he said. At that time, at the location of the omed-omedan tradition was posted the announcement if the omed-omedan was abolished. Despite the publication of such announcement, people and audiences kept coming and gathering to meet at the usual venue of the omed-omedan tradition. Surprisingly, there were actually two pigs fighting to be getting bloody and then disappeared somewhere. After such strange incident, I Gusti Ngurah Oka Putra along with hamlet leaders and community leaders deliberated at the venue to discuss the incident and analyzed what would happen after the incident. “Immediately, following the decision of the deliberation, the hamlet apparatuses summoned the youth club members of Kaja

hamlet, Sesetan, to prepare and carry out the omed-omedan tradition at that time as in previous years and would continue every year,” he said. According to Oka Putra, at first the tradition was directly coordinated by his family commenced with ngelawar at his royal palace. Later in the afternoon, the lawar food was given to the teenagers participating in the omed-omedan tradition. After three periods, the tradition was later taken over by sekaa taruna or customary village youth club until now. “In the past, the participants were not just teenagers, but also married people. Moreover, a couple was given a chance at the opening session. But today it is only carried out by sekaa taruna members,” he concluded. B N (ara)

Gde Palgunadi palgunadigde@yahoo.com n the past, when Ngurah Rai Airport was first closed during Nyepi Day, there were many pros and cons of the public. The pros, of course, reasoned that it should be done to respect the substance of the feast day itself and respect the Hindus who carried it out. As for the cons, they argued that such closure would have a negative impact on tourists. They were feared not to come to Bali again. Revenue would decrease and hotel room was empty. Surely, there were many other reasons related to economic aspects. What happened then? Airport remained to be closed. Initially, there were few complaints but more precisely, they actually needed explanations. Tourism businesspeople who used to go up against the closure ultimately realized that their worries were excessive. Tourists still came to Bali and enjoyed more. Everything went as usual. There was mutual respect and appreciation. Similar conditions also occurred when TV stations

Nyepi Day without Internet were requested to stop broadcasting during the Nyepi Day. There was protest and finally it could be understood. The last is the disconnection of internet services. Although not all providers met the appeal to stop its services, there remain many pros and cons. It is understandable. Similarly, it happened when the airport was first closed for a whole day. Well, it’s just a day or 24 hours! As the day passed, Hindu society could perform its worship well related to the Nyepi feast day where it was the first without internet service. Everything is fine. It is not as gruesome as what some societies have previously protested against the policy. Instead, the government agreed, while the internet services still work for vital object services. Nyepi celebration took place very solemnly. There were no significant obstacles starting from the series of melasti procession to pengerupukan accompanied with ogoh-ogoh (papier mâché demon) parade that was very attractive to tourists and so was the Nyepi without internet. What can be drawn from this atmosphere? We are too easy to complain, protest and have negative prejudice and so forth. Actually, it is meant to implement religious teachings in this digital era. Self-control is absolutely essential to suppress unfavorable and excessive feelings. We too much deify tourism with the lure of economic fortunes. We should be able to slow down our desire and the will of others. It is also for the goodness of Bali, the island we very much love and respect. If we do not respect, who else will do it? B N

As usual, before selling new menus, the Citadines Kuta Beach Hotel will hold a food testing. This aims to determine the response of customers to the taste of the menus to be offered in the Beras Restaurant. “We invite each department head to taste the menus. After that, they will provide input for the refinement of the menus so they can be immediately sold to guests,” said Mahmud Krismayanti, Marcomm Executive of Citadines Kuta Beach Bali. ail soup poses a signature dish offered by the Beras Asian Eatery Restaurant. In addition to spice herbs best favored by local people, according to Chef Toni, his blend also becomes an idol to foreign guests. “To get testimonies, we invite all department heads to provide their input, so the menus will really become delicious,” he added. Chef Ahmad Sultoni said the oxtail soup is the mainstay menu. With different cooking techniques, this chef who is proficient in traditional and Western cuisine really understands about the texture of the basic ingredients to be processed. Spices including pepper, cloves, and onions are processed in such a way to result in a distinctive flavor. Meat and gravy are blended well. The texture of meat also feels soft and tender. “We always use natural ingredients when cooking, and never use additives,” he said. When preparing the menus,

the composition of ingredients is always carefully considered. For example, sugar, salt and pepper must be balanced, so as to produce the proper taste. Similarly, to color the menus he always utilizes organ-

ic ingredients. “We use pepper to make the soup look blackish brown, not soy sauce,” he said. Onions are pan-fried and then put into the gravy and finally filtered. Meat ingredient is taken near the body so that it has larger circle. The meat is then boiled for about 2.5 hours. If the water has boiled, let it be with small fire. Thus, the meat’s taste becomes very strong. Texture of the meat will be the same and have a tender flavor. “Wait until the water boils first. Put the meat into the water, so the meat will not feel fishy,” said Chef Ahmad Sultoni. He added that within the past three months, there are around ten menus to have been tested and the most popular is this oxtail soup. Have a nice testing and bon appétit! B N (BTN/015)

unung Agung (Great Mountain) is the highest mountain in Bali and is also very religiously and culturally important for Balinese Hindus. It is believe that Mt. Agung is a replica of Holy Mount Meru (Mahameru) – the central axis of the universe. Despite its wide crater, Gunung Agung appears to be conical from a distance. When the weather allows for it, Balinese Hindus will sometimes climb along a narrow path though the jungle to the summit of Mt. Agung to make offerings to the mountain deities. The most important temple in Bali –Pura Besakih, known as ‘the Mother Temple’ is located on the slopes of Mount Agung and all Balinese Hindus come to pray at and/or get holy water from at this temple at some point in their life. This active volcano with a deep and wide crater last erupted in 1963-64 but still occasionally belches smoke and ash making areas around the mountain especially fertile. This great mountain also has a strong influence on the climate of the island in general and certainly on the surrounding area. Clouds coming from the west are trapped by Mt.Agung so areas west of the mountain are lush from the rain they receive, while areas to the east of the mountain are dry and barren. B N

Having been collected, it is then sorted by taking advantage of Karang Taruna (village youth club) that processes it into compost. It includes the debris of three trimming. After that, the hotels take the compost for their plants, so it becomes fertile and free from chemicals. Each sack of compost is usually purchased at IDR 25,000 - IDR 30,000.

Large hotels in the Sanur area also apply green house, so they have a green area with a variety of rare plants. They consist of herbal and ceremonial plants having been echoed early on. Hence, the hotels have various types of plants completed with their name. “In addition to preserving rare plants, the existence of such plants also becomes an attraction, so that guests want to come repeatedly,” said this former manager of Sunrise Beach and Secretary of the Sanur Development Foundation.

If the people of Sanur need fruits or ceremonial ingredients, they can pick in the hotel area, like ivory coconut for ceremonial means. Similarly, when hotels require ritual paraphernalia they will ask to local communities to prepare it. Thus, there is a mutually beneficial cooperation. “The green hotel program that emphasizes the local wisdom can strengthen the identity of the people of Sanur,” said Chief of Sindu Market.

ne of the descendants of Oka Palace of Kaja hamlet, Sesetan, I Gusti Ngurah Oka Putra, said the omedomedan tradition was started approximately in the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries originating from his ancestor (Batara Kompyang) denoting a senior figure of Sesetan village at that time.

B N (ara)

This former English teacher for high school admitted to have come to Bali twice, and she is very happy. Balinese people are very diverse, yet live in mutual respect for each other.
