Pesimpenan Baturaya Temple

Long Buried, Now Thronged by Hindu-Buddhists esimpenan Baturaya temple has a unique appearance. The temple’s main shrine is shaped like a typical Hindu shrine but also has a stupa that is identified with Buddhism. There is also a statue of buddha inside the temple area. Apparently, Pesimpenan Baturaya temple is what is known as Shiva-Buddhist temple that had been buried for a long time before being rebuilt in 2005. Every year since then improvements have been made to this unique temple that now appears quite majestic. This temple is also increasing popular, frequented by ordinary people and officials alike. Dutch researchers, Dr. R. Goris, in a book with registration number 806, mentioned this temple that is located in Tumbu Village, Karangasem. The Taka inscription, dated Caka 1247 also mentions the existence of this temple. Pesimpenan Baturaya was established before Mpu Kuturan arrived in Bali. This Siva-Buddhist temple is slightly hidden just east of the village temple of Tumbu. Local Jero Mangku Sudana, recently said that after getting a clue from the Dutch researcher’s book, he checked the location to see if something could be found. The area in question was overgrown and known to be haunted, so few people dared to ever to ever go there. Egged on by the mention in the Dutch book Jero Mangku Sudana investigated and found fragments of a state. He then had a vision of some clay wrapped in gauze buried in the same area. He then perceived another indication that there were statues in three stacks, in a tree pose on top of something like a mattress of clay. After excavating the location guided by intuition, a sone was found standing on a clay bed. The clay appeared strange compared to the other soil with which it would not mix. The stone that they found was then sanctified on the clay bed and dubbed Ida Bathara Lingsir Baturaya. “When brought out of the temple, the deity is placed in Buddha’s palanquin” he explained. According to Mangku (priest) Sudana the deity had expressed desire for such a palanquin. Shortly thereafter, someone appeared in Baturaya temple with just such a palanquin. A similar request by the deity for three gems (red, black and white) was answered by pilgrims from B u l e l e n g who brought these items. These two requests made by Ida Bethara and responded to in such a short time by unrelated people demonstrates the oddities related to the greatness of Ida Bathara Lingsir Baturaya. Not long after following up on all the psychical instructions in 2005, a large devil tree grew in the area. The local priest received another

psychic indication that there was a a agate as large as a swan egg under the devil tree and sure enough when they dug there they found it. When this stone was viewed in sunlight an image of Goddess Kwan Yin, was clearly visible, and sometimes a it looked like a blue sky. Psychic messages kept coming and many sacred objects were found in the area by digging into the ground. During the construction of the Sapta Patala shrine, a spring also appeared just as when the mendem pedagingan ritual was held. Suddenly, the iron tool being used to dig hit something hard. The spring then emerged in the vicinity, whereas previously there were no indication that there was any water there. Following a variety of peculiarities and psychic indicators the temple was finally rebuilt by its supporting devotees. Initially, the temple area was quite small but gradually it has expanded. Although it is already a good size, the supporting devotees plan to keep expanding to the north to accommodate the pilgrims who come to pray at the piodalan (temple anniversary celebrations). hey congregated as early as 5:30 am in the morning and included people from all age groups, all bound by a common thread, an earnest enthusiasm for yoga, a part of the mass movement that yoga has become in Bali. They were eagerly looking forward to being a part of the historic event. They were joined by members of the diplomatic corps, senior officials of the Provincial Government of Bali, fitness experts and media personnel to Indonesia. The International Day of Yoga is an initiative of the Prime Minister of India, Mr. NarendraModi, who in his address to the United Nations General Assembly on 27th September 2014, espoused the benefits of Yoga and proposed the adoption of an International Yoga Day. India, supported by a record 175 co-sponsoring countries, including Indonesia, moved a resolution for adopting 21st June as the International Day of Yoga and, on 11th December 2014, the UNGA, passed the resolution supported by 193 number of a record countries. Thus, 21st June 2015 came to be observed as International Day of Yoga for the first time ever. The IDY 2016 in Bali last year saw the active participation of over 3,000 enthusiastic yoga practitioners. Meanwhile, the second winner was Sartika (Conrad) and the third winner was Surna (Sintesa). The tournament was opened by Deputy Chairman of BHA, Jacques Clarijs. He is proud of the billiard competition among the hotel employees because on the sidelines of their busy activities of serving hotel guests, they still have time to play billiards to defend the hotel where they work. Therefore, hotel employees having regular exercise can improve the quality of their performance. Executive Director of the PHRI, Ida Bagus Purwa Sidemen, stated that the regular event held is increasingly favored by hotel workers. Evidently, the similar event last year was followed by 24 participants but now increased to 34 participating billiard players. On the other hand, Government Relations and Event Manager of the BHA, Andy, admitted that his party deliberately scheduled the individual competition on Thursday, while the team category was held on Friday

playing of the messages from the Prime Minister of India, Mr. NarendraModi. The Prime Minister, in his message, pointed out that the in the present century, Yoga has connected the entire world, just as it connects body, mind, intellect and soul. For living a life that is free of stress, pain, disease and a life full of happiness, Yoga is the only path. He said Yoga is medium to experience and realize how holistic life can be lived in a balanced way, how body, mind, thoughts and behavior can lead to an inward journey of healthy and pious life by the practice of yoga. He urged all the Yoga lovers to make a resolution every year for fixing a target of adding a certain number of new yoga practioners during the year and also to play role in making yoga a mass movement. He encouraged yoga lovers to play a crucial role in bringing peace and prosperity in the world through yoga. PM invited al not only for being a part of International Day of Yoga celebrations but for generating a general consciousness of yoga among the people to make the people live healthy and converting it into a mass movement. Sister Janaki of the Brahmakumaris led a Universal prayer session. The yoga session was led by Mr. KiranManoharmal Jain,

Yoga Teacher from India and Mr. I GustiRakaPanjiTisna who has done much to propagate yoga in Bali. They started by warming up exercises and Surya Namaskar. The yoga enthusiasts were welcomed by the Consul General of India in Bali, Mr. R.O. Sunil Babu. The Consul General welcomed the gathering and stressed on the importance of yoga in alleviating health problems and reducing stress through regular practice of yoga. He stated that he was happy to see that such a large number of people had gathered to practice yoga. He thanked the Governor and his Government for the support and cooperation they had extended to the Consulate in organizing the IDY. He also thanked the people who worked tirelessly to help make the third International Day of Yoga such a grand success. The event came to its end by playing of Shanti Mantras as by doing yoga body is relaxed and by chanting shanty mantras it gives immense pleasure and peace to soul which has proved to be a stress buster in this modern hectic life style. This unique event saw an unprecedented rush of people, eager to practice yoga despite the early hours, which showed the enthusiasm which the people of Bali have for yoga. B N (BTN/r)

(Jun. 16). It is solely meant to provide an opportunity for athletes to get down in individual and team category. “We do not want this championship among the hotel workers to interfere with their regular activities. Moreover, if the individual and team category is held simultaneously, it is feared to have an impact on their working schedule, and it’s a pity they cannot concentrate,” he explained. He added there was a surprise in the individual category, like last year’s runner-up, Yoga (Ayana), should be eliminated in the tournament applying double elimination system where the athlete is eliminated after experiencing twice losses. In the preliminary round, Yoga was defeated by his teammate Sudianta, and subdued by Sartika (Conrad). Moreover, last year’s champion, Michel, was also defeated by Putrawan in the 16-big round. In the team category, Sintesa won the tournament. In the final, the team from Sintesa defeated Ayana 2. The Sintesa team consist of Agung Andi Purnama, Anggik and Ketut Surna while Rata, Kodhik, and Pandi played for Ayana 2. The third winner was Ayana 1 with the players Michel, Yoga, and Yaya while the fourth winner was Upasha. Sintesa was going through looser team spot and they played their way to the top and become the winner. B N (BTN/kmb)

itnessing the uniqueness of Cak traditional art or commonly known as Kecak does not necessarily have to go to Batubulan or Uluwatu. This classical art presenting a cappella as its uniqueness can also be watched at Tanah Lot tourism object, precisely at Dewi Sinta Hotel & Restaurant. “We offer Cak to tourists after having been dormant for a few years,” said I Gusti Gede Aryadi, the owner of Dewi Sinta Hotel & Restaurant. This Kecak art is presented to tourists every day around 18:30 or after watching sunset at Tanah Lot tourist attraction. The art troupe playing the Kecak is local residents who mostly work as farmers coalesced into the Candra Bhuana kecak art troupe of Tanah Lot. In the appearance, the art troupe involving young artists and teenagers features the storyline of Ramayana epic highlighting the love story of Rama and Sinta. Although they are not academic artists, the kecak art presented is creative and innovative so that can amaze the audience. The puppeteer speaks Balinese and Indonesian, and sometimes English so that tourists can understand. Thus, in certain scenes they laugh and even give a twinge with the intention to encourage the players. “Tourists are very satisfied with this kecak show,” said Aryadi. Funny demon character often tempts tourists with its amusing movement. They sometimes combine dance movement with the contemporary wobble of the artists becoming the current trend. Moreover, there is a chance where the demon dancer hands over his mask to tourists and then dances together. “Sometimes, there are guests wishing to dance, so that we engage them as lady’s maid,” said I Putu Erawan, chief of the art troupe. Besides, tourists wishing to get involved in the show are also given the opportunity. They are prepared with the same clothes as a kecak dancer and dance together. “There used to be guests from Japan who wanted to dance Kecak, we gave them a chance. They were very happy because other than watching they could also get involved

and feel the mood as the dancer in person,” said Putu Erawan. The scene most liked by tourists is when the dancers are playing fire. The fire appears when Hanuman burns the kingdom of Lanka so that the fire is scattered. At that time, the Kecak dancers play fire as in the Sanghyang dance in Bali. When Ravana comes out, he is shot dead by Rama. In one occasion, there was a guest from Makassar and wanted to dance with the role as Sita, while the others became lady’s maid. By

ixed cassava cake is one of the simple and affordable cakes of the Hindu community in Bali. Rural people love very much this kind of cake. Moreover, farmers often enjoy it as a substitute for rice. Its main ingredient is cassava mixed with sticky rice, grated coconut, brown sugar and salt. In the past, people made the cassava a staple food. Understandably, the rice was very expensive at that time, even it was hard to get. At least, the cassava was cut into small pieces and then boiled and sprinkled with salt. To get different flavors, people made the cakes in various preparations. One of them is this mixed cassava cake. The making of it is very simple. First of all, cassava is peeled and cut into small elongated shape. Alternatively, people can also use a slicer. Before that, prepare sticky rice at adequate amount. It is then soaked for 24 hours and then drained. The cassava and sticky rice are steamed for about 10 minutes. Take out when they have been cooked.

Afterward, prepare brown sugar sauce and grated coconut. Add a little salt to the grated coconut so that it has a flavor. How to serve it? At first, prepare a dish and banana leaf as the base. Take an adequate amount of cassava cake and mixed with grated coconut. Having well mixed, top it with brown sugar sauce to taste. Children really like this kind of cassava cake sprinkled with brown

sugar sauce. Unlike the old people, they sometimes are reluctant to sweet foods. Recently, it is difficult to find this king of cake, let alone at urban areas. However, traditional markets usually still sell it. Nevertheless, the urban communities are often longing for enjoying this cake. If they happen to have a promenade to village, they usually buy it. he Bali Arts Festival (BAF) held every year is proved to have been a powerful medium to explore, preserve and develop the arts. This year’s art extravaganza does not only have a positive impact on the artists, but also on creative industry. Moreover, the discovery and preservation are not only limited to its form, but also its philosophy, nobility and universal values. Armed with knowledge and the art as representation of civilization, Balinese people, especially the artists, are able to develop the art through creation, innovation and cultural adaptation. As a result, it remains to survive and runs sustainably in the context of changing

Where To Go . . .

times. In the current development, in the capacity of Bali as an international tourist destination, the BAF has played a role as a medium to improve the welfare of the artists and their community. If noted, every BAF implementation has great impact on the role of talented young generation of Bali. As evidence, creative young people are able to preserve the arts inherited by their ancestors, and creatively gave birth to new works of art. Prestige demands them to compete, so that it demonstrates the quality of the art of each region to be the best and superior. The artists appointed to represent never hesitate to appear and to be the best. It makes the participation of all the districts and munici-

pality in Bali always display their art well and nicely. They perform optimally by promoting creativity and innovation, but do not leave the traditional norms. Then, will the BAF only become the peak of the art process that is just enough to get there? At the first appearance in 1979 on the idea of the late Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra, the BAF aiming to accommodate the artworks, art aspirations, art reconstruction, art innovation, art attractions and art appreciation may have been answered. However, when the BAF has entered the 39th year, is there any thought for its continuation or is it enough to get to this point? During the long passage of the BAF, it should not only develop

irdsongs greet the tranquil natural countryside where birds perch on green branches and fly away exalting in their freedom. Below ducks play in the rice field and have become so familiar with farmers that they causal look for food in the watery paddy fields, undisturbed by those who walk near them. Such is the atmosphere of countryside Tatag Hamlet, Kukuh Village, Marga Subdistrict, Tabanan. The hamlet, located about 18 km north of Denpasar is indeed still natural and unique. It is situated far from the hustles and bustles of the city and offers verdant views of rice fields in all directions. Similarly, the hamlet preserves some large trees that provide the shade for all souls who pass under them. At each end of the hamlet, there are springs used for public drinking, bathing and washing. Traditional cultural activities are also maintained. The local community still makes a variety of cakes like jaja begina, rice cones, used in oblation and for other ceremonial purposes. The people of this village engage in artistic activities such as drawing, dancing and playing Balinese traditional gamelan. The local villagers also routinely raise pigs and cattle. “These activities are attractive to foreign tourists” said Kukuh Headman, I Ketut Budiarta. Indeed, the hamlet inhabited by a population of 389 people is often used for trekking by tourists. Aside from the beautiful natural surroundings of this village, meten - traditional ancient Balinese houses can also be found here. There are also jineng (rice granary), Balinese pavilions and classical style entrance gates. Tatatg is also strategically located very close to the tourist destination of Alas Kedaton. “Many of our people still cook in traditional manner” added the headman of Kukuh. “Every week, there are tourists who strolle through the village – mostly form Europe. Other tourists ride bicycles to enjoy the special areas of this village. Apart from foreigners, there are also entrepreneurs from Denpasar and Tabanan interested in experiencing the unique adventure” said I Ketut Jana, Hamlet Chief of Tagtag, while escorting Bali Travel News to have look around the village. the art, but must also be followed by the development of the management. After accommodating the best work of art, the government as the organizers must also think about the continuation, so that the arts having developed will not only live during the BAF and then go extinct after the event comes to an end. It is very much deplored, if the artistic process of the generation is only stagnant until in the BAF. Bali government should have thought about the continuity of the various works of art having been featured in the BAF. It can be done by providing a medium, a wider opportunities to express the results of their creation. For example, the art troupes becoming the best get the opportunity to be an envoy of Bali to appear in national or international events, such as joining the art competitions, festival or art parade. The artists or art troupes having performed well in the BAF should be given the opportunity as an art mission that promotes local culture outside the region or overseas. If too excessive, then they can also be given the opportunity to welcome official guests or as an art envoy at the international event held on this Island of the Gods. I Ketut Keplug, a traditional drummer of Denpasar, said that giving the opportunity to appear can serve as a reward to those who succeed in artistic creativity. It should not even be dominated by certain people that do not play a role in the BAF. “Showing off su-

perior arts from different supporters will certainly be able to give new nuances. Besides, it can serve as reflection that Balinese people have a variety of arts,” he said. Similar opinion was also stated by I Wayan Weda, an artist from Tabanan, who cares about younger generation. According to him, this time many art troupes appearing in the BAF are in suspended animation after the BAF. They must be given the breath to stay alive. “Well, the opportunity to appear again will make the art troupes more passionate to seriously pursue their profession. They should not even switch professions because there is no chance to get earnings,” he added. Prof. Dr. I Made Surada, a lecturer of the State Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN) of Denpasar, said that BAF organizer should be more creative in creating space and giving awards to the best participants. For example, the champions of inscribing palm-leaf manuscript, Balinese literature, story-telling and other competitions need to be given a further opportunity. “The work of participating contest is very good. But unfortunately, after getting their champions where do they go? This sustainability needs to be considered. Do not just practice for the sake of BAF, after that disappears. So, it is not wrong if every BAF implementation only gives impression that it just implements the project,” he said. (BTN/015)

Badung Asparagus Reached Export Market and Ranked Best in Asia

rocessed asparagus is indeed quite delicious regardless how it is prepared. Asparagus is also healthy and nutricious. The district of Badung is famous for its tourism but it also has another strength over other regions in the form of asparagus that has become the icon of Badung. Asparagus is an agricultural commodity that is currently being cultivated in North Badung, in Pelaga Village and Belok Sidan, in the distric of Petang. Cultivation of this tasty vegetable in these two places started in 2010 and as now reached export markets. Pelaga famers are proud of their asparagus that is considered the best in Asia. In order to develop this asparagus product, the district of Badung constinues to supprt and assiste farmers. For example, they held the Asparagus Festival again at Mertanandi Farmers’s cooperative IN Pelga Village in Thursday (June 15). The Asparagus Festival was opened by regent of the Badung

represented by Regional Secretary of Badung, I Wayan Adi Arnawa, and was marked with the stricking of a gong. BTN/bud

ative, SME and Trade Agency, Ketut Karpiana, reported that the Badung’s leading product development program using the One Village One Product (OVOP) approach has been working with the Mertanadi farmers’ cooperative to cultivate asparagus since 2010. From the planting to the marketing, farmers have been coached by agricultural experts from Taiwan. Every year their cultivation of asparagus has increased in terms of both land area and farmers’ income. They are now cultivating asparagus on some 60 hectares in Pelaga Village and Pelok Sidan. On average, farmers’ income per day reaches IDR 800,000 to IDR 1.5 million. Karpiana expalined that after cooperating with the Taiwanese, the farmers here were able to sow their own seeds and plant this crop with greate efficiency. The seeds that are imported from America are provided by the government. Ministry of Tourism to Launches New Branding of 10 Destinations

BTN/bud

he Ministry of Tourism’s Deputy of Overseas Tourism Marketing Development, I Gde Pitana, recently announced the launch of the rebranding of 10 tourist destinations in Indonesia. These 10 destinations are considered to be the most ready to support the marketing of Wonderful Indonesia to the new international market. The ten tourist destinations involved are: Bandung, Great Bali, Great Jakarta, Great Riau Islands, Joglosemar (Jogja-Solo-Semarang), Coral Wonders (Wakatobi-Bunaken-Raja Ampat), Medan, Makassar, Lombok and Banyuwangi. The rebranding of these 10 destinations has been prepared in an effort to align the masterbrand ‘Wonderful Indonesia’ with the sub-brands of the different destinations. Such alignment is meant to strengthen the position of the master brand, as well as enhance cooperation between the central government and local governments in the promotion of Indonesian tourism to the international market. Pitana added that all relevant stakeholders need to have a tho-

rough understanding of the branding concept so that the central government and regional governments can better work together in promoting tourism. “The 10 tourist destinations that are being supported in this campaign all fullfill the requirements of the 3As: Attraction, Accessibility and Amenities that will facilitate the branding of these destinations and thus increase the number of tourist visits”, explained Pitana. The Ministry of Tourism consistently supports regional governments in promoting tourism by conducting promotional activities overseas with the master-brand ‘Wonderful Indonesia’. “I can understand that President Jokowi is probably not the only world leader who is tired of thinking about national branding for tourism”, he added. The launching of the re-branding for the 10 destinations in Indonesia was attended by representatives from the 10 regions and enlivened by performances of cultural wonders including traditional dances, fashion shows, and a musical performance by Kamila Band and local music presented by Andien. seat capacity. As of the opening of the hospitality desk, six airlines had added extra flights. Citilink, Garuda Indonesia, Nam Air, Sriwijaya Air, Wings Air and Lion Air added a total of 369 flights which is a 129 percent increase over the extra flights added during Lebaran last year. “This year, is different so in addition to increase the number of flights, some airlines have also changed the type of aircrafts being used. For instance all 11 of Garuda’s flights are using larger aricrafts” he explained. Garuda Indonesia will be using B777300 with a capacity of 393 seats instead of the usual B737-800 with a capacity 162 seats. With the extra flight and larger aircrafts there are a total of 66,366 extra seats being made available for the Lebaran holiday which is an increase of around 2, 500 seats per day. With these additional

flight, Angkasa Pura I has asked the airlines and ground handling services to pay attention to the quality of services so that everything can run according to the schedules specified. “Airline and ground handling companies should optimize service time. On time performance or OTP must be taken care of thoroughly. There should be no prolonged delays”, affirmed Yanus. In addition to addressing the readiness of key facilities such as runways, aircraft parking and flight safety equipment, vehicle traffic protocol has also been prepared in order avoid congestion around the airport. “Smoothness at the airport also depends heavily on service users. I therefor appeal to everyone to obey the rules and suggest that passengers arrive early for their flights in anticipation of potential crowdedness. People should pay attention to their luggage making sure that they are not carrying anything forbidden so as to speed up the security check inspection process”, Yanus appealed. (BTN/015)

yang Nyang Beach in Bali is a pristine 1.5-kilometre stretch of coastline and also one of Bali’s least visited beaches. This is partly due to its far-flung location and the long trek required to reach it. Still, it makes for a prize destination for day-trippers and beach lovers exploring the southern Bukit peninsula, and offers great surf for those looking for waves to ride all for themselves. The beach is located in the Pecatu area, half a kilometre’s drive southeast of the Uluwatu Temple. There are several routes branching off from the Jalan Uluwatu main road that leads down to two halves of Nyang Nyang Beach, one of them is via

N

Jalan Batu Nunggulan and right at the cliff edge of Villa Plenilunio. From this end, you need to continue on an approximate half-hour trek down moderately rugged terrain and flight of stairs – a journey well worth it thanks to the splendid views over the limestone hillside covered in lush greenery and flowering bushes. Sounds and views of the ocean accompany your steady descent. Depending on the route you chose, the flight of stairs usually doesn’t end at the coast, but on flat grassy plains. Beyond this is the prize view when you sink your feet into the coarse sand. The deserted terrain is bordered by slanting cliffs as far as your eyes can see, with thin mists hanging above the ocean. Out at sea you will be able to see the

natural reef that breaks the incoming tides, allowing for calm and clear waters bordering the coast. The long coastline makes for a good walk, with virtually no other human in sight most of the time, other than occasional local seaweed farmers tending to their crops, or bold and lonesome surfers out on the reef break, having their thrill of a lifetime (only for the advanced, and those really determined on carrying their boards down and up the hill again). There are actually two halves of Nyang Nyang Beach, divided only by a broad grassy headland. Near the western end of the eastern half of Nyang Nyang, you’ll be treated to a lone split shipwreck on the sand. You can stay on for sunset here or make the climb up again before dark. It has also become a camping site for die-hard travellers and weekenders as the deserted ambiance makes it an excellent spot for bonfires under the stars and for those willing to set up tents and camp the night. Swimming out is not recommended; obviously there are no lifeguards on patrol. Also, be in good shape and bring adequate rations and drinking water – there are also no food stalls or peddlers, other than one at Nyang Nyang Beach’s western half, selling drinks and colourful beach cloths.

in Badung district has an area of 753.5 hectares and Denpasar City has an area of 620 hectares. West Bali National Park has mangrove forest as one of the vegetations with an area of 429 hectares in Jembrana district and 212 hectares in Buleleng district. Then, Nusa Lembongan forest located on Nusa Lembongan Island (Klungkung district) has 202 hectares of mangrove forest area. Mangrove forest has very important function as the lungs of the city where more rare trees have been replaced by concrete poles and retaining wall against sea waves and prevent abrasion. So, we have an obligation to maintain and preserve it. In addition to retaining sea waves and preventing abrasion, mangrove forest can also offer beautiful scenery, trekking location by crossing wooden bridges in the middle of the forest, and leisure place somewhere amid the mangrove forest while enjoying green open atmosphere. Some people also take advantage of this place as a prewedding photo shoot because it is quite interesting and iconic.

If you are staying in the area of South Bali such as Kuta, Tanjung Benoa, Nusa Dua or Sanur, you can schedule next tour to this mangrove forest. So far, in the Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park there are 12 mangrove species and seven species of mangrove association. Dominant species include the Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata, Avicennia marina and Sonneratia alba. In addition, it has a high biodiversity such as birds, reptiles and amphibians. Overall, there are 66 species of 27 families of bird species found in the Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park. Bird species in this area are dominated by waterfowl such as little pied cormorant, oriental darter, gray heron, great egret, intermediate egret, javan pond heron, black-crowned night heron, lesser whistling duck, Eurasian curlew and kingfisher. Other than birds, amphibian and reptile species are often found in this area such as frogs, iguanas, lizards, Asiatic soft shell turtles, mangrove snakes, et cetera.

Bali, the Island of Gods

Bali’s new tourism branding ali finally has a new tagline for its branding: Bali, the Island of Gods. This motto had been discussed amongst members of the Bali tourism office along with cultural, academic and tourism stakeholders and was then proposed to the Ministry of Tourism. Having been approved by the ministry, the new branding is set to be launched in Jakarta on June 14th. “Bali, the Island of Gods includes the concepts of ‘lovely Bali’ and ‘peaceful Bali.’ If we come into the realm of Gods, it means that tourists are treated as if they are in heaven”, said Head of the Bali Tourism Office, A.A. Gede Yuniartha Putra, when contacted on Friday (Jun 9). Yuniartha added that the Bali, the Island of Gods branding is also supported by a logo that characterizes Bali. This new branding of Bali will be launched along with the branding of nine other destinations in Indonesia: Friendly Lombok,

According to Nyoman Sutrisna, Head of the Buleleng Tourism Office, these destinations should be developed in terms of administration, physical arrangement and management systems so that they be more sustainable. Apparently, the mangement of some of these destiantions having been improved by local communities and the tourism office have born sweet fruit. Four tourism in Buleleng were recetnly given Dewi Awards by the the tourism village communication forum (Forkom Dewi) Bali in cooperation with the Bali tourism office. Pemuteran village in Gerokgak subdistrict, Munduk village (Banjar) and Sambas village (Sukasada) won silver Dewi Awards while Kalibukbuk, Lovina Beach won bronze. Sutrisna Explained that this year no tourism villages in Bali won the gold Dewi, so the challenge to win this award award next year is not an easy thing to accomplish. Sutrisna explained that each of the villages that won awards offer their own unique appeal. Pemuteran village in the subdistrict of Gerokgak, for example, offers an underwater conservation area that has won several national level awards. Meanwhile, Munduk tourism village in Banjar subdistrict offers cultural, traditional and agricultural tourism as these are well preserved in ths mountain village. In contrast to Pemuteran and Munduk, the third silver award winner, Sambangan village in Sukasada subdistrict, nearly always has both domestic and froengn visitors and is well known for its waterfalls and delightful natural scenery. One of the most famous waterfalls is Sambangan is the Aling-aling waterfall. One of the most famous waterfalls at Sambangan is the Aling-Aling waterfall. he Manik Pasupati Semar Pegulingan Gamelan Troupe had the opportunity to perform at the 39th Bali Arts Festival in the Angsoka Stage of the Denpasar Art Center on Wednesday (Jun. 14). This art troupe from Puseh Agung customary village, Tengah, Negara, presented the result of a reconstruction of the semara pegulingan gamelan piece that is considered to be new to the region. “This is a new gamelan piece for our region in Jembrana and was composed to suit the character of the gamelan”, said the leader of Manik Pasupati gamelan troupe, I Kade Arya Parjana. Parjana explained that the reconstruction of the gamelan piece known as semara pegulingan resulted in a pategak gamelan composition entitled the Kubu Reod (literally, slanted shack). This title refers to ancient culture that remains to survive in the modern era. Although it may appear slanted, it can still provide serenity to everyone who sits there. “I think this gamelan composition refers to the festival’s theme of (Ulun Danu- protecting water) as slanted shacks are also commonly found in rice paddy fields and are associated with agrarian traditions. During harvest season, farmers use these shacks to unwind when they become tired”, he said. He added that the gamelan troupe is also supported by the DJ Kepakisan young artist Community and the Gayatri dance studio in their performance of four gamelan compositions and dance performances including the Kubu Reod. The three other compositions are; lengker cenik, the Legong Kuntul dance, and the Jauk Manis dance. Lengker cenik is one of the gambuh - style gamelan compositions used to accompany Panji Dance or Patih Manis using the tetekep lebeng. But, the semara pegulingan gamelan music often us estetekep tembung. “A total of 25 gamelan players and five dancers are involved in this performance who rehearsed for a month and a half. This was a very short time to prepare, but we have performed at the BAF five times already so it made it easier for us to get ready for the gong kebyar, the puppet gender competition and others”, he explained. The Jauk Manis dance tells the story of a gigantic figure as the king of the jungle who has a gentle character. Legong Kuntul dance depicts a group of herons looking for food in paddy fields while playing with their companions. Instructor of the Legong Kuntul dance, Ni Wayan Ardani, said that the legong dancers, including herself, are mostly students. Despite the relative difficulty of this 20 minute dance, they manged to master it a month. “Legong is indeed a bit difficult. The important thing is to have mastered the basic postures and techniques so that this fast dance can be memorized more easily”, said this dance instructor from Gayatri dance studio. Breathing is really important in this dance, as is good balance, without the proper techniques the dancers are quickly exhausted, she added. “In essence, we control the breath so that when there is a movement that requires a lot of energy, we focus there while for the slower movements our strength is not focused so much on the breath”, she said. capacity. “At the moment, Ngurah Rai Airport is starting the preparations for the development of some main facilities,” said General Manager of Ngurah Rai Airport, Yanus Suprayogi, in the media gathering with the

stakeholders at The Patra Jasa Resort & Villa on Thursday (Jun. 15). Yanus explained that the development of several main facilities, such as runways, aircraft parking and passenger terminal. All the additional facilities are expected to be completed before October 2018. “Implementation of this work is divided into several stages. Firstly, it is the addition of the aircraft parking area or apron in the western part of the airport by relocating the VVIP 1 and VVIP 2 buildings. This VVIP building will be moved to the east. There will also be an expansion of the eastern apron. Totally, there will be 10 additional points of the aircraft parking,” he explained. In addition to apron development, the management of Ngurah Rai Airport will also build a parallel runway in the south of the existing runway with an area of 3,000 m x 45 m. Process of this work will be undertaken in the second stage. “We need the help of colleagues from mass media to inform this development plan so that the news circulating in the community is not confusing. Here mass media play its role into a medium of information

and significant education,” he hoped. Therefore, the company should conduct reclamation in the western side as wide as 81 hectares. “This reclamation is entirely for public facilities, especially in order to welcome the 12,000 thousand delegates that will attend the IMF annual meeting,” he said. For the joint iftar activity, the management invited the big family of airport community. With the theme “Harmony in Diversity,” the management of Ngurah Rai Airport wants to embrace all parties coming from different agencies and backgrounds to work together in providing the best for passengers. “Various obstacles and operational problems will be more easily handled if all parties in the airport are more united and solid. Nothing cannot be resolved if we have the same perception of giving satisfaction to passengers,” he said. This joint fasting break was attended by 500 people from both internal and external personnel of the Angkasa Pura I, including the orphans from Rumah Yatim Indonesia Foundation of Denpasar Branch. n Bali, the holiday season in June and July is enlivened with kite competitions. This frequently means that there are disruptions to the flow of traffic, as crowds of youth carry their giant kites to the site of these competitions. In order to avoid complaints about this type of disruption by other road users, the kites that are brought to these competitions are expected to be made so that they can be “knocked-down” and reassembled on site. Participants in the the kite competition that is to be held in Sanur this July, for example, are expected to apply this method. Chairman of the kite competition

This new tagline is expected to stick with people better than the previous ‘Shanti, Shanti, Shanti’.

“All the districts and the Municipality of Denpasar are expected to then create their own marketing campaign related to Bali, the Island of Gods. Maintaining Diversity in Fine Arts

Raja Ampat, West Papua

aculty of Art and Design (FSRD) of the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar presented its final assignment of even semester 2016/2017 in an exhibition. The exhibition took place four days (Jun. 13-16) at Citta Kelangen Building, at local campus. Entitled “Maintaining Diversity in Works of Art and Design” the exhibition involved 185 students from six departments of the FSRD. The work presented offers diversity value, different yet beautiful. Featuring very diverse topics, it is able to answer any existing phenomenon. Most importantly, the works express the values and messages with idealism and positive things. Similarly, they are very creative and innovative so as to offer attractive exhibition. For instance, the work of I Putu Adi Natha, a student of Visual and Communication Design, is designing a packaging of coconut flavored product. The packaging design is made by combining the traditional art and modern painting. His work adopts local excellence, where chocolate product with coconut flavor is the only genuine Balinese product designed elegantly. In addition to the work of Visual and Communication Design, hundreds of students’ works of some other departments are also interesting and marketable. This time, the number of students participating in the final assignment exhibition are mostly from Visual and Communication Design (67 students), Fine Arts (14), Photography (16), Fashion (33), Television and Film Department presents 5 documentary films, 2 fiction films and 1 television program. The exhibition was opened by Rector of the ISI Denpasar represented Deputy Rector in Charge of Student Affairs, I Wayan Gulendra, accompanied by the Dean of FSRD, Ni Made Rinu, department heads, lecturers and students. “Diversity is the characteristic of a work. The matter of artwork is the expression of the senses, the language that can be captured by the community through the art having its own uniqueness. “Well, we process these matters through the elegant and ethical artworks so that become an artwork,” he explained. Ni Made Rinu added that the exhibition is meant to maintain the diversity of each department as a form to establish a very high tolerance “We can see it in this exhibition. seat capacity.

Other than birds, amphibian and reptile species are often found in this area such as frogs, iguanas, lizards, Asiatic soft shell turtles, mangrove snakes, et cetera.

he Bali Arts Festival (BAF) held every year is proved to have been a powerful medium to explore, preserve and develop the arts. As a result, it remains to survive and runs sustainably in the context of changing

Tatag, a Unique Tourism Village Worth Exploring

irdsongs greet the tranquil natural countryside where birds perch on green branches and fly away exalting in their freedom.

(BTN/015)

Regent of Tabanan then opens the festival followed by reviewing the exhibition area along with the invitees. “The exhibition followed by ten MSMEs and 20 culinary booths will last as long as the festival takes place,” he explained. Rindik (Balinese bamboo gamelan instrument) will be played by children artists at noon every day. This music is deliberately played at day time to give the genuine nuance of Bali. “A new thing in this event is the gebogan parade by Balinese women in traditional attires. They uphold the gebo-

Dewi Sinta Hotel & Restaurant Presents Kecak Dance Daily W

itnessing the uniqueness of Cak traditional art or commonly known as Kecak does not necessarily have to go to Batubulan or Uluwatu.

If they happen to have a promenade to village, they usually buy it. utrawan, the billiard player of Hard Rock, came out as the winner of the nine-individual-ball category in the event entitled “The Billiard Tournament 2017” held by Bali Hotels Association (BHA) in cooperation with the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Bali and Bali Travel News (BTN) at Paradiso Bowling and Billiard Center, Kuta, on Thursday (Jun. 15).

(Jun.
