vidently Bangli County retains a number of temples having the nuances of Chinese culture. Apart from the Ulundanu Batur and Dalem Balingkang Temple, the Bukit Mentik Temple located at Batur customary village, Kintamani also indicates the evidence of good relationship of Hindu people in Bali to Chinese community. Inside the temple area sits a number of Chinese shrines used to venerate their deities. Many people think if the Bukit Mentik Temple (bukit means hill in Balinese) is located on hills range. When entering into the middle courtyard, there are resting pavilion and some shrines such as the Catur Bhuwana as the abode of Ida Ratu Ayu Panca Kerti, three-tiered meru shrine as the abode of Ida Ratu Ayu Kentel Gumi and triple shrine as the abode of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Next, in the innermost courtyard there are several other large shrines, such as the Ratu Sakti Madue Gama as the abode of Ida Ratu Sakti Sembah Suhun Mekalihan, the shrine of Ida Bhatara During Akasa, Ida Ratu Tangkebin Jagat and the shrine of Ida Dalem Dasar. Uniquely, in the innermost courtyard also sits a Buddhist shrine designed in Chinese architecture. Meanwhile, the temple anniversary of the Bukit Mentik Temple is held several times a year namely on the full moon in July, September and October. This rawon menu is served with yellow rice. Until now, we remain to preserve this menu,” he said. It is byproduct traditionally coconut oil processing. Balinese cuisine has been popular since the past because it tastes good, nutritious and quite cheap. Although tasting just a little, it will feel very prominent, so a pack of pepes telengis is usually eaten with a plate of rice. Pepes telengis has distinctive aromas and flavors. In the dough, it is usually combined with green leaves and herbs, such as sweet leaf and moringa leaves containing chlorophyll, calcium, vitamin C and others. It can also be mixed with other types of vegetables, so that it feels better. If you like meat, the pepes telengis is usually mixed with pindang or salted fish. This traditional menu is very close to the life of farmers at villages. Few children and teenagers are willing to consume it. Pepes telengis will be better when eaten in warm condition. The ingredients are telengis, sweet leaf or moringa leaf and banana leaf used to wrap it. Meanwhile, the spices are onion, garlic, chili, turmeric, ginger, shrimp paste and salt to taste. Before making it, it may be necessary to look at the nanusin (oil making) process that can produce telengis. First of all, make coconut milk from dry or even old coconut.

Besakih Temple Sits at the Foot of Mount Agung

ount Agung in Balinese language is also known as Giri To Langkir to express its majesty. Giri means ‘mountain,’ To means ‘person,’ while Langkir means ‘towering.’ R. Goris, a literary scholar, compares the word to meaning ‘person’ to the family of languages found in other places having almost identical spellings that indicate the original equation. For example, the people of Bugis, Makassar and Toraja mention the person with the word ‘tou’ or ‘tow,’ the Sasak people on Lombok Island say ‘tau,’ the Bima people on Sumbawa Island say ‘dou,’ while the Filipinos say ‘tawuw.’ The word Langkir in Sanskrit can also be interpreted as the Mahadev or Supreme God (Master Plan for the Besakih Temple Development). In the Sangkul Putih palm-leaf manuscript is mentioned: “... Kang um is the ring tolangkir Bhatara Pasupati Ngaran ...” means: “... the deity abiding on Mount Agung is named Bhatara Pasupati ...” The word Tolangkir is derived from the word to (tu) meaning

Mount Agung is called Giri To Langkir because of its size and height, another word for explaining the Supreme. Considering the majesty of Mount Agung, it was then established the abode of Hyang Pasupati named Besakih Temple. Besakih Temple belongs to Sad Kahyangan (six main temples) of Bali. This temple consists of 86 groups of temples. This group is divided into 18 (eighteen) common temples, 4 Catur Lawa temples, 11 Padharman temples, 6 nonPadharman temples, 29 clan temples and 11 temples do not belong to the group. All groups of the temples were built in stages. They were estimated to be first built by King Wira Dalem Kesari Warmadewa (913 AD), and then continued by Sri Kesari Warmadewa whose wife is Sri Gunapriya Dharmapatni (1007 AD). Rapid development occurred during the administration of Dalem Waturenggong where Danghyang

At Besakih Temple, there is worship for gods namely; Kiduling Kreteg Temple where to worship Lord Brahma; Gelap Temple (Lord Ishvara), Ulun Kulkul Temple (Lord Mahadev), and Batumadeg Temple (Lord Vishnu). Penataran Agung Temple is located in the middle because it is considered the most distinguished. Here is where Hindu devotees say prayers every year in the ceremony known as Bhatara Turun Kabeh falling on full moon of the tenth month in Balinese Calendar (April). Batu Meringgit Temple Show Off Religious Tolerance in Bali

here is unique evidence that can be encountered in the Batu Meringgit Temple located at Bedugul, Baturiti, Tabanan. Established in 1813, the temple has become a historical trace showing off the interfaith harmony in Bali created since the past time. Since then, every piodalan or temple anniversary, the worship was not only performed by the Hindu community, but also by the communities of Chinese. At this time was held the first Eka Dasa Rudra at Besakih Temple. Later, the Eka Dasa Rudra was not performed for several times. The next Eka Dasa Rudra was held in 1963 AD precisely on March 18, 1963, falling on full moon of the tenth month (Balinese calendar), Sukra Pon Julungwangi Çaka 1885, but was then not cancelled. At that time (1963), a great eruption of Mount Agung happened and caused the Island of Bali to be in pitch black. According to traditional mythological sources, a figure named Sri Wira Dalem Kesari founding the Merajan Selonding approximately in 250 AD located in the west of Penataran Agung Temple, where the Selonding gamelan instrument is now stored. He is said to have repaired the Besakih Temple. The word Dalem is the title of a king in Bali. Thus, the meaning of Dalem Kesari is most likely the King Kesari Warmadewa who ruled around 917 AD. This is indicated by inscriptions at Puseh Penempahan Temple and Belanjong (Sanur). Among the inscriptions, only those at Belanjong that have the date or chronogram: Cara Wahni Murti. Cara means ‘the star’ and has number 5, Wahni means ‘fire’ number 3, murti means the body of Lord Shiva has number 8. Therefore, after being read from the rear, the whole chronogram shows Çaka 835 or 913 AD. During the reign of Sri Udayana, Besakih Temple also received great attention. This can be found in two inscriptions whose copy is now stored in Merajan Selonding and Gedung Sakti inscription in Selat (Karangasem). It has chronogram ‘Nawa Sangapit Lawang’ and ‘Lawang Apit Lawang.’ Both chronograms have the same meaning: nawa means 9, apit means 2 and lawang means 9 (symbol of 9 holes in human body). The whole chronogram becomes Caka Year 929 or 1007 AD. Since the year 1007 belongs to the era of Udayana Warmadewa, apparently the king paid enough attention to Besakih Temple. Other than two inscriptions dating 1444 AD and 1454 AD that carry the inauguration of the autonomy of “Desa Hila-hila Hulundang Ing Besuki” it is also carried that outsiders as well as royal officers are not allowed to collect taxes in the region of Besakih Temple and the people of Besakih have duty to maintain Besakih Temple and the shrine of Sasuhunan Kidul. Such a condition continued until the conquest of the Klungkung kingdom by the Dutch in 1908. During the Dutch colonial era, the Dutch government paid great attention to Besakih Temple as proved in 1918-1923 when natural disasters destroyed many buildings; the government held a massive restoration. Furthermore, after Indonesian got its independence, the local government of Bali hand-led the repair and ceremonies at Besakih Temple. In 1967 supervision and maintenance of Besakih Temple by the governor of Bali was submitted to the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) and was then mandated again to Prawartakan Besakih Foundation. This foundation then carried out the repairs to damages caused by natural disasters. Great attention of the Bali government along the district and municipal government across Bali is given to the improvements that continue until now. Other than the attention of customary and religious institutions through meetings of Sulinggih and Walaka, religious seminars and other meetings on the ceremonies at Besakih Temple should be carried out in accordance with the norms including the implementation of grandiose rituals held periodically such as the Eka Dasa Rudra in 1979 (Çaka 1900), Panca Walikrama in 1989 (Çaka 1910) and Candi Narmada at Batu Klotok, Panca Walikrama in Lake Batur and Tri Bhuana Ritual in 1993, Eka Bhuana Ritual in 1996 in the courtyard of Besakih Temple as a series of the Eka Dasa Rudra. Byomantara said that 234 of the 602 graduates or 39 percent have worked before graduation. In addition to targeting 100 percent of absorption in the job market, he also encouraged the STP Bali graduates to become brave, creative and innovative entrepreneurship. “The spirit of entrepreneurship is important because the entrepreneur has the opportunity to move the economy and empower the community,” he said. The graduates of STP Bali, explained Byomantara, will be able to be entrepreneurs considering the competence having been achieved. In addition to getting involved in creative business, culinary and travel business, the STP Bali graduates can also develop community-based tourism businesses, such as homestay,

agro-tourism and other integrative businesses in the tourism village empowerment. “With technological capabilities as part of Indonesia’s gold generation, the STP Bali graduates are also expected to be able to develop Indonesia’s digital tourism industry,” said Ngurah Byomantara. Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, on that occasion invited the STP Bali to be able to compete directly with the world’s standards. To that end, he hoped the institution must develop world-class curriculum. “Every tourism college under ministry of tourism must become a center of excellence in a particular field. In addition, STP Bali must be an entrepreneurship school and has an international study program,” he said. Every graduate, continued Tourism Minister Arief Yahya, must be certified with ASEAN standards because Indonesia remains inferior to Singapore and Malaysia. To be able to beat Malaysia, Indonesia must certify 500,000 people from the hotel industry, restaurant and so on and so must the fresh graduates. “If it can be achieved, in 2019 Indonesia can be ranked second in terms of regionally certified standards,” he said.

The Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar held the opening of reconstruction of Joged Pingitan performance art at Apuan hamlet, Singapadu, Sukawati, on Friday night (Sep. 15). The reconstruction involving a number of lecturers of this art campus will revive Joged Pingitan that had been forgotten since tens of years ago. Chief of LP2M of ISI Denpasar, I Gusti Ngurah Ardana, who was present on that occasion, explained that it has become the duty and responsibility of the ISI Denpasar in reviving any arts that have almost or already become extinct. “Our duty is to perform reconstruction for the extinct arts,” he said. He said the disclosure of Joged Pingitan art was revealed from the research in 2015. It was obtained information that the dance was famous in the 1970s. Moreover, this art has ever been staged to Jakarta. “That’s the information we received. But somehow, after returning from Jakarta, this art does not appear again to the surface,” he explained. Related to this condition, he considered it very important to do reconstruction to the Joged Pingitan Dance. Moreover, several reconstructions of various arts have been successfully done in other districts. “So, this year we carry out reconstruction to this Joged Pingitan in the hope of being able to revive and add variety to the dance art in Bali,” he explained. During the reconstruction process, the ISI Denpasar has selected two speakers who have knowledge about the Joged Pingitan dance. As one of the high-rise landscape of the earth, mountain is believed to be the abode of the gods. There are several mountains in Bali, where in the vicinity there are also sacred places or important temples. Like at the foot of Mount Agung, there is Besakih Temple, Ulundanu Batur Temple nearby Mount Batur, Lempuyang Temple around Mount Lempuyang as well as Batukaru Temple around Mount Batukaru and so on. Besakih Temple is mother temple of Bali is located at the foot of Mount Agung, the highest mountain in Bali (3,142 meters). Mount Agung last erupted in 1963 which claimed many victims, burned thousands of homes, thousands of hectares of paddy fields and moors as well as caused thousands of residents in the vicinity to flee. Currently, it is reported that Mount Agung having been in long ‘sleep’ has showed the symptoms of active volcano. There are hundreds of times of volcanic shocks felt by the surrounding community. Will the history on the volcanic eruption repeat as in 1963? Hopefully, it

will not. All the people of Bali pray that the disaster will not come again. In the Hindu concept, all forms of disaster on earth happen due to disturbance against the balance of nature such as floods, fires, volcanic eruption, earthquake and so on. There is a disturbed balance due to human action and the influence of the natural cycle of a necessity of change. The earth is analogized to a big turtle. This huge turtle is twisted by two dragons keeping it from moving or stabilizing. When the winding is loose and the turtle is moving, a variety of disasters will arise. To make stable condition, human must behave in accordance with the teachings of religion. In the concept of Tri Kaya Parisudha, or three sanctifying acts, is expected that all human action must be based upon the three things, namely manacika-think good, wacika—say good and kayika—do good. This is the basis for every action in this life. Now, Mount Agung has showed it volcanic signs. Technology can predict even though not bringing in one hundred percent precision. Alertness of the apparatuses and the government has also been much more advanced than in 1963 so that the number of victims can be minimized. Many things will happen if Mount Agung erupts. This is a sign of the times that we are indeed reminded by the Creator. The impact of disaster is not only on the surrounding community. When it really erupts, volcanic ash blown by the wind can go anywhere. It can happen and disrupt the flight. If this happens, it will certainly have an impact. We do not want to be wonder. Surely, God has sent a signal or gestures for us to be more introspective and always closer to the right path. Be always in the path of God. B N
