Ratu Subandar Temple at Besakih he Ratu Subandar Temple at Besakih, Karangasem, is located at the upper three stairs from the Penataran Agung Besakih. Local temple priests Mangku Cik, Gusti Mangku Suputra and Jero Mangku Ugu met on the sidelines of serving the pilgrims not long ago. They said that 99 percent of the pilgrims worshipping at the temple were businessmen or traders. Mangku Cik conveyed that the Ratu Subandar Temple had the same function as Melanting Temple. The latter temple of swagina or profession is located above the market. Especially at Besakih, there was also the Ratu Subandar Temple. Essentially, there are two shrines at this temple. One shrine is located on the left namely the Ratu Ulang Alu. The deity abiding and adored at the shrine

is illuminating the pengalu or peddlers. To the right side of this shrine is the shrine of Ratu Ayu Subandar. She is adored by entrepreneurs or traders. Both shrines apply the Balinese architectural style. However, the hallmark of Chinese culture or influence is very dominant in which the accessories and fabrics of the shrines are all in red showing typical Chinese attibutes. Similarly, each corner is also embellished with red lantern ornaments. The local temple priests are not certain about the history of the Ratu Subandar Temple in the upper eastern part of

the Penataran Agung. This temple is located above the northern corner of Penataran Agung. It shows the Chinese influence brought by traders or merchants (Subandar) since the seventh century in the Srivijaya era and which continued through to the Majapahit era. It is estimated that the Chinese traders have influenced Balinese culture and economy since ancient times, where many interactions occurred between the local community and Chinese merchants, which is why both these communities worship Ida Ratu Ayu Subandar at Besakih Temple. Mangku Cik said the piodalan or temple anniversary of this temple fell on Galungan, Buda Kliwon Dungulan. B N (BTN/kmb)

Traveler Likes Best Souvenirs of Tanah Lot H

igh domestic and foreign tourist visit to Tanah Lot attraction has an impact on souvenir merchants. Other than enjoying the natural beauty of the beach and magical aura of the attraction located at Beraban village, Kediri, travel-

ers can also purchase nice souvenirs. Thus, travelers can go home with souvenir as a memento. At the beginning of 2017, the souvenir merchants at Tanah Lot look happy because there are a lot of visitors. From the number

of tourist visits, most stop at souvenir stalls, so there are always merchandises that can be sold. Indeed, Tanah Lot is not only a favorite tourist attraction, but also famous for various souvenirs. “Travelers think that it is incomplete if they do not bring home the souvenirs of Tanah Lot,” said Wayan Mudita, a tourist guide from Denpasar. Various souvenirs on offer include clothes, slippers, fans, headdresses, bags, bracelets, wallets, hats, key chains, postcards and other beach sarongs. The best seller souvenirs are hats and T-shirts with the wording of Tanah Lot and Bali. Headdress is also bought by many domestic travelers. Moreover, school students when making a visit in a series of their study tour averagely purchase headdress which they wear directly.

Jan. 20 - Feb. 9, 2017

In the meantime, bracelet, necklace and ring have little demand. During summer, travelers usually purchase a hat. “Foreign travelers rarely purchase souvenirs. They mostly purchase drink and food. It is different from domestic travelers who often buy Tshirts in large numbers. Especially in holiday seasons, almost all merchants earn fortunes,” said Mrs. Krishna, a souvenir merchant at Tanah Lot. Operations Manager of Tanah Lot tourist attraction, I Ketut Toya Adnyana, said that kiosks at Tanah Lot offer a variety of souvenirs. Some are hawkers selling fruit as well as food and beverages. Their existence spreads in the main area and parking area. And the no less interesting is klepon cake that is also bought by many travelers. “Various souvenirs become alternative tourist attraction at Tanah Lot because many tourists are happy after getting souvenirs. It is also a form of our services to tourists,” he said. (BTN/015)

Remains in finishing stage

Yellow Bridge to be completed on Jan. 22

S

EMARAPURA - Construction of Yellow Bridge costing about IDR 3.4 billion from the Central National Road Agency for Region VIII, the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, is still in finishing process. Nevertheless, it needs several more days to complete the bridge connecting Nusa Ceningan to Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida. The bridge estimated to accomplish on January 22 will be ritually inaugurated first before used. Head of the Klungkung Public Works Agency, Gusti Nyoman Supartana, conveyed that currently the Yellow Bridge project is almost completed. According to him, the workers just need to install frame and paint it yellow. “From direct inspection, the bridge will be completed on January 22. After ritually inaugurated, the bridge can be used directly,” he said when contacted on Sunday (Jan. 14). Related to the original plan where it should have been completed by late 2016, Gusti Supartana admitted to have faced a problem chiefly during high tides. The bridge construction process done manually cannot be carried out during high tides. The new bridge has a length of 140 meters and width of 1.6 meters. It can be passed through by motorcycles and pedestrians. A resident of Nusa Lembongan who is also local tourism player, Ketut Surianta, said that many problems occurred after the bridge collapsed chiefly the access of residents, students and travelers. “This is a tourism-supporting infrastructure for both islands.

Without this, we cannot do much,” said the husband to Ni Komang Ayu Utami. He hoped that after the construction is completed and the bridge comes into operation, there will be comprehensive supervision accompanied with regular maintenance from the officer and the customary village that manages the bridge as a pre-wedding object. “I see the workers are quite vivacious even though there are many obstacles in the field. Without sophisticated equipment, the bridge can still be completed soon,” he said. This father of three daughters is optimistic that the new bridge is able to operate. Thus, the sectors of economy, tourism and education will be running normally again. He also expected to increase the number of tourists visit. (BTN/kmb)

Sticky and Sweet Jaja Lukis W

hile spending your holidays in Bali, have you ever taste the sticky jaja lukis cake? This kind of cake is not ‘painted’ or ‘drawn’ as the name suggests (lukis in Indonesian means ‘painting or drawing’). However, it is a Balinese cake that tastes sticky, sweet and slightly chewy. It has the shape of small triangle and greenish white color. This cake is classified into consumer-friendly because the ingredients and coloring substance used are from organic herbs. It is made without dyes, sweeteners or preservatives. Similarly, the serving is topped with grated coconut and palm sugar. It will taste better when enjoyed while drinking coffee or tea. Indeed, it is not easy to get this kind of cake. Other than difficult to get the ingredients, the preparation is also quite complicated. However, stalls at villages, traditional market, pastry shops and some supermarkets have sold it. However, at bakeries and super-

markets this cake has been packed neatly using plastic container. On the contrary, food stalls still serve it manually so that it remains really fresh. Jaja lukis is made from ingredient like sticky rice. Other ingredients include shredded coconut, salt and palm sugar. The preparation takes a long time. At first, the sticky rice is soaked for about 15 minutes. Prepare the extract water of dracaena leaves. This leaf is used to make the cake taste savory as well as to get natural green color. Furthermore, it is drained and then filled with salt. After that, it is wrapped in green and clean banana leaf with tablespoon batter for each wrapper. Do not forget to wrap it tightly to get sticky result. Then, boil it for two hours (as boiling rice

bag). Take out and drain. To ensure whether the sticky rice has been cooked or not, check by piercing using a pin. When it seems to be hard, take out and drain. Wait until it cools down before serving. Having been cool, it is ready to serve. First of all, open the banana leaf. Place on a piece of banana leaf evenly. Furthermore, sprinkle with grated coconut that has been mixed with salt and then sprinkle with palm sugar sauce. (BTN/015)

Tumpek Landep A Moment for Purification of Ancestral Heritages

baligardenbeachresort.com

umpek Landep is celebrated every Saniscara (Saturday) Kliwon Wuku Landep. The phrase Tumpek Landep is derived from the word tumpek meaning close and landep meaning sharp. So, in the philosophical context, Tumpek Landep poses a milestone of sharpening the citta, buddhi and manas (mind). Therefore, people always behave according to clarity of mind with the foundation of religious values. With a pure mind, devotees will be able to pick and choose what is good and bad.

Where To Go . . .

Tumpek Landep poses veneration to Lord Shiva Pasupati as the god of taksu or divine inspiration. So, after celebrating the Sarasvati Day as the coming down of science, people invoke in order the science will be auspicious or gives sharpness of mind and heart. On the Tumpek Landep is also performed a cleansing and purification ritual to different ancestral heritages such as keris dagger, spears and so forth. Layman often considers it the anniversary of iron or metal. However, over the period, the meaning of Tumpek Landep increasingly deviates from

the true meaning. Now, the community even tends to interpret the Tumpek Landep as a ceremony for motorcycles, cars and equipment made from the iron works. Indeed, this is very much distorted. It is okay to perform a ritual on Tumpek Landep to motorcycles, cars and working equipment, but do not forget the core of implementation of Tumpek Landep itself so that people always remember to sharpen their mind (manas), buddhi and citta. By doing so, people are expected to fight against ignorance, darkness and misery.

Batu Meringgit Temple Show Off Religious Tolerance in Bali here is unique evidence that can be encountered in the Batu Meringgit Temple located at Bedugul, Baturiti, Tabanan. Established in 1813, the temple has become a historical trace showing off the interfaith harmony in Bali created since the past time. Simply have a look at it, next to the building of Batu Meringgit Temple lies a Chinese Temple venerated by the Confucius devotees. Acculturation of the Hindus with local Chinese residents has long happened here. Priest of the temple said the Batu Meringgit temple was also venerated by Chinese residents because they were descendants of the King Sri Jayapangus of Batur Kintamani who married with a Chinese woman. “To honor him, it was then established a Chinese temple next to the Batu Meringgit Temple,” he explained. Since then, every piodalan or temple anniversary, the worship was not only performed by the Hindu community, but also by the communities of Chinese. Anniversary of the temple fell on Buda (Wednesday) Umanis Medangsia. This year, it fell on Wednesday, February 22, 2012. “Many officials, especially those in Tabanan Regency, also said prayers here,” he said.

Ritual of Tumpek Landep actually reminds people of always sharpening the mind so as to suppress the evil behavior within the self. In terms of the meaning of feast day, the ritual to motorcycles, cars or working equipment is more appropriately carried out on Tumpek Kuningan, namely as a thanksgiving for the facility gift of Supreme God. Hopefully, the facilities can help the activities and function well and safely. Tumpek Landep poses a milestone for introspection to improve the character pursuant to religious teachings. On Tumpek Landep, devotees should do worship in family shrine as well as in temple to invoke the blessing of Lord Shiva Pasupati to be given the sharpness of mind so that we can become a useful person to society. It is also resumed

Jan. 20 - Feb. 9, 2017

with the cleaning and purification of the ancestral heritages. For the artists, Tumpek Landep is celebrated as a worship to invoke divine inspiration so the art becomes more developed, gains an appreciation from the community and ability to convey a moral and intellectual messages to educate people. Again, it is affirmed that Tumpek Landep is not ritual for motorcycles, cars, furniture or iron, but it is more about the awareness of always sharpening the mind for the welfare of mankind. It’s okay to give ritual to motorcycles, cars and so forth as a form of gratitude, but it is only the additional value. Do not let the celebration focuses on the added values, but forget the basic core of the celebration. (BTN/015)

Atuh Beach Starts to be Thronged by Divers usa Penida is renowned for the habitat of sunfish. This ancient fish has even been made into the icon of Nusa Penida Island since it becomes one of the tourist attractions. Moreover, the existence of the large, tailless and heavyweight fish with round flat shape and soaring fin upwards and downwards cannot be easily found at other locations. It can only be seen at particular time in July and September at two locations, namely the Blue Corner and Crystal Bay at Penida village. However, since this week some divers have encountered this ancient fish in the waters of Pejukutan village, precisely on Atuh Beach attraction and neighborhood of Seribu Island or Mollenteng Hill that is also known as the Raja Lima. As a result, not a few divers started to throng the Atuh Beach just to see this ancient fish. The problem is that the area (Atuh) belongs to the core or forbidden zone because it is used for fish breeding. Thus, the beach and the sea should be sterilized from all the

activities of divers. “This is very unfortunate. Since the appearance of sunfish occurs in the core zone, there should be no divers there,” said Chief of Nusa Penida Water Conservation Area (KKP), I Nyoman Kariawan, on Tuesday (Jan. 10). He did not know technically how sunfish is now living on the Atuh Beach. Previously such uniquely shaped fish only appeared on the spot of Cristal Bay and only emerged in particular months. “We do not know for sure why sunfish could be seen there (Atuh). Parasites on the body of this fish are usually eaten by small fish. Possibly there are a lot of small fish in the region, so the sunfish also come there,” he explained. Then, what efforts have been made by the KKP Nusa Penida for this? Karyawan only said that his unit will coordinate with police, in this case the Marine Police of Klungkung, to take control any time. In the meantime, his unit can just call for divers and fishermen not to disturb the existence of sunfish. (BTN/bud)

ertasari Beach has become a tourist attraction that continues to receive the attention of the municipal government of Denpasar. The parking lot and some SME stalls have been improved upon and the City of Denpasar is working through the Tourism Office to make arrangements for the management of the area. This plan was discussed in internal meetings with Regional Secretary of Denpasar last week. Head of the Denpasar Tourism Office, I Wayan Gunawan, when contacted on Monday (Jan. 9) said that his office must first coordinate with the Finance and Development Supervisory Agency (BPKP). There are rules that need to be synchronized namely Law No.19/2016 related to the guidelines on managing assets or property owned by local governments, and Laws on tourism. “We have to coordinate with the BPKP so that asset management of the beach is done in accordance with existing regulations”, he explained. Gunawan said that the land of Mertasari Beach, Sanur Kauh, spread over some 2.3 hectares is under the authority of municipal

government of Denpasar. The parking lot has been renovated as have 15 stalls for merchants. In the future, hopes for the area to be managed more professionally as the government cannot do this job optimally. Pursuant to the existing legal provisions, the government can delegate the authority to manage such a site to other members of society. With more competent management, better results are expected. “Initially, we will coordination with relevant agencies to ensure that applicable rules are being respected and that we do not make a mistake by using two dif-

ferent laws as points of reference. SO these two regulations need to be synchronized”, he explained. As many people know, Mertasari Beach is a place of recreation for citizens of Denpasar and surrounding areas. During holidays, residents throng the beach making it quite crowded with people bathing, canoeing and engaging in other water sports. Also, some time ago the central government established a building next to the area belonging to the City of Denpasar. Unfortunately, the building that is under the authority of the central government has not been put to use. (BTN/kmb)

Surprisingly, more and more new hotels are appearing in numbers so that they trigger tighter competition. “I see the competition in hotel industry is increasingly difficult. Many new hotels emerge. Some hotels do rebranding because they are difficulty to survive in the competition,” said Yanti Rastiti, Assistant Sales Manager of The Sunset Hotel. Yanti said that competition in room rates is no longer avoidable. Moreover, in the era of online booking, guests can directly compare hotel room rates via the internet or their mobile phone. Although there is an appeal not to underprice, in reality this practice always happens. “Now, we are looking for solutions to address it. Clearly we do not go along to underprice,” said the woman born in Denpasar on November 14, 1993. She admitted that she cannot avoid price competition. However, her management has had a special strategy namely by not decreasing standards of quality. Due to good quality of service hotel can get repeater guests. “Other than having staff extending good hospitality, the service I mean here include facilities as well as sanitation of the rooms and hotel area, sanitation of linen, air conditioning maintenance, quality Wi-Fi and others,” she explained. eauty of the beach offered by Badung district, aside from Kuta, Nusa Dua and Jimbaran is Batu Pageh Beach. Located at Ungasan village, South Kuta, it belongs to the area of Batu Pageh Temple. Batu Pageh Beach does not have too extensive area. However, this beach is surrounded by rocks, so that it becomes one of the uniqueness owned by this beach. The rocks make the existence of the beach look hidden and private. The name Batu Pageh is also taken because of this phenomenon. In Balinese language, /pageh/ means fence or rigid. Thus, Batu Pageh means the beach fenced by ‘rigid rocks.’ The rocks look soaring high and steep. In addition to the phenomenon of coastal rock, the name of the

beach is also equated to the name of a temple located on the beach. Before heading for the Batu Pageh Beach, visitors must walk down 328 stairs. Along the walking down, the eyes of visitors will be pampered with a variety of stunning sea views. The waves looking to mutually chase can also be observed when walking down the stairs. In addition to the rocks, the atmosphere of Batu Pageh still looks beautiful and tranquil. Serenity of the beach allows the seaweed to grow and thrive very well. Expanse of clean white sand and blue sea water makes the beach appropriate for a visit when travelers want to enjoy a new atmosphere. Moreover, the beach is still rarely visited by people so that visitors can freely enjoy the scenery on this beach. Besides, visitors can swim and sunbathe while enjoying the

afternoon sun. It offers great waves for surfers when wishing to enjoy the challenging waves. Another

uniqueness offered by this beach be covered up by the waves. This is that when high tide occurs, the beach has been equipped with entire area of this bijou beach will some facilities, such as quite extensive parking space. head of the Lunar New Year falling on January 28, the Indonesian Guides Association (HPI) is preparing Mandarin-speaking tourist guides. Lunar New Year is a holiday season in China. In the meantime, statistical data mention that hundreds of millions of Chinese people go out of mainland China on the Lunar New Year, but Bali just gets 1.3 million of Chinese travelers. To master a foreign language will take a minimum of a year so that it becomes late to meet the demand. “Previously, only residents with local identity card were qualifying for tourist guide that handle Chinese travelers in the region. Now, there have been policies that guides from outside the island are also allowed to handle due to urgent needs,” said Sang Putu Subaya, Chairman of the HPI on Friday (Jan. 13). In Bali, there are 1,300 Mandarin-speaking tour guides and expected to spread to various regions in Indonesia depending on Chinese travelers. Such number is considered sufficient to handle Chinese travelers. “The discourse that we shortage of tour guides are indeed partly correct. We got information from ASITA that traveling in group has tended to shift to family incentive tour (FIT). Thus, two to four travelers will need a guide. This is calculated by our colleagues in ASITA. They often meet and discuss about the anticipation of Mandarin market chiefly during peak seasons such as the Lunar New Year,” he said. Chairman of the Association of Indonesia Tour and Travel Agencies (ASITA) Bali, I Ketut Ardana, said that before the moment of Lunar New Year the increase does not only happen in the demand for freight. Request of tour packages in Bali also increases. According to him, based on the experience of

The works presented by these academic artists are somewhat innovative that are in keeping with the development of times and technology. Creativity of students is utilizing technology and able to read the rolling times. “So, they do not only make classic works. Local wisdom with the value of Balinese tradition remains to become their object. However, their way of thinking is more modern,” said Prof. Arya. Dean of the Faculty of Fine Art and Design, I Made Rinu, said the exhibition is held at the Bali Art Center because the ISI Denpasar has made cooperation with it. It is also meant to improve the academic quality, creative process of art and unlimited artistic life. “Creative process requires long, spacious and profound exploration considering that diverse aesthetic creations has been created in front of us and they have given the source of development up to these days,” said Rinu. Tukad Mungga village, center for qualified bricks Community of Tukad Mungga, Buleleng, does not only engage in the agricultural sector. However, through generations they also engage in brick making. Amid the growing development of modern building materials, how is the business prospect of this craft? Tukad Mungga village is located near the town of Singaraja. When entering the area adjacent to Pemaron village, the eyes are not only faced with fertile soil condition that makes it very suitable for development of various types of plants.

number of communities that live around the village center are also seen busily arranging their bricks that have been recently dried. Other people are seen mixing materials and piling up coconut fibers. A brick maker, I Nyoman Witana, told that the business has been carried out through generations. Many people engage in the business. After the emergence of various types of building walls, this manually produced brick remains to have a very promising prospect. It can be seen from the businesses remaining to survive.

“Prospect of this business is still very promising. It is not inferior when compared to the other materials,” he said on Tuesday (Jan. 10). Brick product by local markers, he said, does not only meet the demand in Buleleng district. Moreover, it has also been distributed to all districts in Bali and some to Banyuwangi. The purchase is mostly used for the construction of villas. “The order is pretty much. Sometimes we are overwhelmed to meet the demand. They come from various regions,” he said. side from natural beauty and spinning top art, Pedawa village in Banjarsubdistrict, Buleleng, also has a unique traditional dish known as‘taro satay’ that is still prepared to this day. This taro dish has become known as a Pendawa village specialty because along with cloves and coffee, there are many taro plantations here. Local people do not know who the first person to make taro satay was but they do know this dish very well. Taro satay is commonly used in religious ceremonies and other village gatherings and many villagers are experts in creating this dish that is not found in other parts of Bali. Headman of Pedawa, I Putu Sudarmaja, said recently that this taro satay dish has existed since ancient times and almost all residents are familiar with this traditional dish. In recent years, the recipe for making taro satay almost disappeared as it competed with more modern

recipes. However thanks to the development of tourism in Pendawa village, taro satay was introduced to foreign visitors and was thus revived. “We’d like to revive our culinary heritage. Since we are developing a tourism village, we’d like to introduce our taro satay delicacy to all visiting travelers”, he said. Satay skewers made from young bamboo are used to make the satay sticks. Before making taro satay, the ingredients need to be prepared (complete Balinese seasoning— Ed). First peeled taro are steamed, and then mashed into sticky dough to which the Balinese seasonings are added. This mixture is then twisted onto the bamboo skewers and the satay sticks are grilled over embers of burned coffee wood. The heat and smoke from the burnt coffee branches produces the distinct aroma of Pedawa’s taro satay. Likewise, it has fine structure. “The demand is a lot, well... it definitely happens due to consideration of quality,” said Witana. Headman of Tukad Mungga, I Made Arka, revealed that brick craft has existed through generations. It does not only have an impact on the brick makers, but also on other community members. “This business can create job opportunities. Some residents can take the opportunities as brick porters. Transport services by vehicle can run as well,” he said. A total of 15 residents are involved in the brick productions of large enough quantities. It adapts to the number of demands. “Until now, this craft business is still very promising,” he said. BTN (BTN/kmb)

Based on the data in 2016, there are ten tourism villages, namely the Sembiran, Gitgit, Sambangan, Ambengan, Bebetin, Munduk, Kaliasem, Gobleg, Kalibukbuk and Pemuteran. These villages had been established through Regent Decree No.430/927/HK/ 2015. The desire of Buleleng district to develop tourism sector does not only rely on the existing attractions. This year, six villages, namely the Les, Sekumpul, Bengkala, Banjar, Sidatapa and Pedawa will also be set into tourism villages. With this, the tourist attractions in Buleleng will be more varied. “This year tourism village amounts to sixteen,” said the Head of the Buleleng Tourism Agency, I Nyoman Sutrisna, recently. According to him, one of the criteria to determine the tourism village is the existence of attractions that can be offered to travelers. More fundamentally, it is supported by facilities and infrastructure. “Each tourism village has distinctive features,” he said. To support the establishment of tourism village, promotional measures will soon be done. Other than district government, the promotion will also be carried out by regional promotion board established some time ago. The human resources of it will also be fostered in a sustainable manner, so that it will be able to realize the concept of sapta pesona or seven charms. “Later on, this board will cooperate with travel agencies. The whole objects will be promoted,” he said. He added that the addition of tourism village also poses one of the efforts to achieve the target of tourist arrivals amounting to 3.5 million people. Other than exploring the area of the city tour, they can also see the richness of architectures of temples, palaces and markets. Due to this program, Denpasar has been able to achieve the highest award in terms of Indonesia Tourism Index (IPI) which refers to the Travel and Tourism Competitive Index. This success cannot be separated from the support of the

entire community in the development and the expansion of tourism. Implementation of tourism programs in Denpasar is inseparable from the participation of the entire community both from conservation activities and strengthening the culture, infrastructure, sanitation, social, security and order to education. Denpasar Heritage City Tour is also a reference in developing the tourism areas, so that they can be widely introduced. In addition, the program also invites the entire hotel management to realize a green city through green hotel that cannot be separated from the implementation of Tri Hita Karana. BTN

The atmosphere can be intensely felt when visiting the Blahbatuh Grand Palace. The palace located at Kebon hamlet, Blahbatuh village, Gianyar—about 18 km from Denpasar still preserves all the existing buildings. The layout is based on the Asta Kosala Kosali (Balinese geomancy). “Even, if there are damaged buildings, they will be repaired in accordance with the original design,” said AA Kakarsana, a descendant of Blahbatuh kingdom. Its ornament tells a story and contains a philosophy of life. It is made of bricks producing a neat slanting formation. Since it is sanctified, any woman who gets her period is not allowed to come in and this prohibition also applies to all the royal family members. A Vietnam War general veteran from the United States has visited the architecture for four times. “We ever asked people to plagiarize the wall ornamental style, but none were successful,” he affirmed. People coming into the palace area must pass through the gates made in traditional architectural style. rently use Balinese style concrete. A craftsman pursuing this business, I Nengah Jarna, when met at his residence at Gunaksa hamlet, Cempaga, on Wednesday (Jan. 11), told about the origin of his Balinese style

concrete craft business. At first, he just wanted to make a try. He was previously a laborer at concrete block making near his home. Since his boss went bankrupt then, he was eventually unemployed. Departing from such condition, he tried to pursue Balinese style concrete craft. “At the beginning, our product did not use any carvings. Since it was still learning, our mould was still without carving. So, our products were plain,” said Jarna. Over time, the business initiated in 1995 is increasingly advanced and growing rapidly. It can be seen from the arrival of many orders from various regions in Bali. Moreover, due to many orders since 2002, he is overwhelmed to work on. “At that time, I still worked on the orders alone for not having employee. Being unable to handle all the incoming orders, I finally decided to recruit employees to help the workmanship of the orders so that they can be accomplished more quickly,” he said. This husband to Wayan Ariani

added that currently he has employed 18 employees to work on the orders coming from all districts in Bali. Most orders come from Bangli, Gianyar and Klungkung. Only a few orders also come from Karangasem, Jembrana and Buleleng. “The types of his craft product include pillar, bale dangin pavilion, chamber shrine, piyasan pavilion et cetera. It is adjusted to the order. We just make when receiving an order,” he said He admitted the public interest in Balinese style concrete craft is quite high lately. It happens because it can last longer than using wood. However, there are also people disliking such concrete craft and still prefer to use wood for the carvings. “Concrete craft can last for hundreds of years, while wood product can only last for decades as it can turn damaged. Then, it depends on the community, if they are not happy with concrete product, they cannot be forced. It also has something to do with their financial capability,” he explained.

When asked about the price, Jarna explained it varies depending on the type of product. A plain product is much cheaper than the product with carvings. Here, he determines the price per meter of product. “The price is IDR 300,000 per meter. A pillar without carvings costs IDR 550,000, while the carved pillar will cost IDR 1 million. The price of bale daje (northern pavilion) can reach IDR 250 million,” said Jarna. Furthermore, in the future he would like to continue his craft business having been practiced for decades. He did not want the Balinese style woodcarving will go extinct. Moreover, recently the Balinese style building is increasingly rarer because people in Bali tend to establish modern building. “Do not let Balinese carvings even disappear. It should continuously be maintained. As Balinese residence, we should be able to maintain the Balinese carvings in order to still develop,” he concluded. BTN (BTN/kmb)

Now, we are sharing with the members in the form of training for human resource development, such as in the form of leadership as well as improvement of knowledge, skill and attitude,” he said. In the meantime, BVA Secretary General, Yoga Iswara, when serving as speaker explained about the challenge and opportunities in 2017. On that opportunity, he also carried out the data from the ministry of the RI, so that it can perform evaluation and make advanced measure for the future of tourism. “Most importantly, we respond to and make strategies based on the data. It also includes predicting the market and adjusting to our strategy in 2017,” he explained. Yoga Iswara then pointed out that Chinese travelers going abroad in 2017 - 2019 will rise sharply. In 2017, there are 133 million of travelers and in 2020 reaches over 220 million. Of that amount, supposed that 10 million only travel to Indonesia is enough. It is very possible because currently Chinese tourist visit to Bali is ranked second and to Indonesia is ranked first. Well, Yoga Iswara continued that it is necessary to take a lesson from the large number of Chinese tourist visit. Then, it should be addressed wisely. “Do not take action as if we reject the Chinese market. The important thing is to manage the Chinese market well. Maybe it needs to change the pattern from the group to individual, so that its value will be higher. Here we have to show off our readiness. Probably we need to learn Chinese language as preparation,” he said. Another example is about 50 percent of the tourist arrival to Indonesia come through Ngurah Rai Airport. It means that it is a great opportunity to grab dollars. However, so far Ngurah Rai airport only has one runway, and only accommodates 17 million aircrafts a year. It is different from Singapore which can hold 55 million aircrafts a year. “The numbers in the data are correct, but we must use these numbers to interpret in making future strategy,” he added. direction for the organization in implementing the vision and mission namely contributing to the development of tourism sector. The first branch meeting of PHRI Denpasar 2016 is expected to become a forum in determining the short-term and long-term work program for the next five years. In addition, the branch meeting is also expected to become a medium of discussion related to the issues and problems in the tourism industry that will be able to produce effective work program to be further used as recommendation by the government. Membership data collection of the PHRI Denpasar becomes one of the important agendas in the efforts to provide accurate data regarding the number of hotels and rooms as well as the form of existing accommodation business.

It is important for the government of Denpasar to always use accurate data in the compilation of tourism agenda. In the recent period, potential of domestic travelers contributes significantly and continues to grow. To get the potential, Denpasar should produce innovative tourism products. To support it, the PHRI Denpasar will perform some important measures by holding audience with the government as well as carrying out a dialogue with relevant parties. When preparing the work program of the PHRI Denpasar, global issues like environmental preservation become very important. To support it, it will be realized with several programs such as planting mangrove, coral reef, sanitation of the beach and some other agendas. Membership gathering will be announced in the program every six months or once a year to explore various issues in order to find a way out together. Regarding the issues of licensing, PHRI Denpasar will conduct hearings with the licensing office of Denpasar City. To comply with the criteria of hotel, villa and other business standard, the PHRI Denpasar will cooperate with the government and business certification institute in Denpasar to certify the labor. Management inauguration of the PHRI Denpasar by Chairman of PHRI Bali is based on the Decree No.006/SK/PHRI BPD Bali Province/XII/2016. B N (BTN/r)

Tourist attractions in Buleleng will be more varied ourism villages in Buleleng will become more varied this year. District government planned the addition of five new tourism villages that respectively offers its own advantages, particularly in terms of attractions. Potential of tourism owned by Buleleng district is not inferior to other regions, especially in Bali. The tourist objects offered to indulge travelers are not only in the form of marine tourism like the famous one located in West Buleleng. Moreover, this land of Panji Sakti also has tourism villages. He added that the addition of tourism village also poses one of the efforts to achieve the target of tourist arrivals amounting to 3.5 million people. hood of the Denpasar city tour is continuously developed by Mayor Rai Mantra. One of them is the establishment of Denpasar Art Space used as exhibition space for the artists of Denpasar that can be enjoyed by foreign travelers. Denpasar Art Space is located on the north of Jagatnatha Temple of Denpasar.

BTN

Candikusuma Beach, located just 10 km east of the town of Negara in Jembrana, has long been used by locals for recreation and is also favorite spot for local fishermen. On any given day one can see fishermen and their jukung (traditional fishing boats) as they bring in their catches to the traditional fish market. The subvillage of Dusun Moding lies just north of the beach and is famous for its cocoa, coconut and vanilla plantations and has a lot of potential to be made into an agro-tourism village. Dusun Moding is also home to Jembrana’s official traditional art –Jegog (bamboo xylophone orchestra). In here you can also see shell care that will be taken their diamonds. Sublime, wise and authoritative impression remains visible here. Spatial division is nicely arranged into the outermost, middle and innermost courtyard and the architecture is still original.

BTN (BTN/kmb)

head of the Lunar New Year falling on January 28, the Indonesian Guides Association (HPI) is preparing Mandarin-speaking tourist guides.

According to Ardana, this increase will occur due to sufficient availability of flights from a number of cities in China to Bali as well as the addition of flight charter. “By and large, the flight charter is organized by tour operator of China. This tour package offered to individuals or families tends to increase from year to year,” he added. B N (BTN/kmb)

So, from the various works, they have looked for the essence from the end of the third to final semester becoming the pinnacle of presentation for their works,” he said. “Creative process requires long, spacious and profound exploration considering that diverse aesthetic creations has been created in front of us and they have given the source of development up to these days,” said Rinu. hotels have openly underpriced their rooms in front of competitors or colleagues. As evidence, Yanti said that in 2016 the number of repeater guests at Sunset Hotel increased significantly.

“That is one of the indicators that low price does not suggest the only determining factor for guests to choose a hotel,” said this employee who started her career from Sales Administrator or E-commerce Department. Currently, Yanti is working while attending undergraduate program at English Department at STIBA Saraswati Denpasar, so that she has a challenge in terms of time management. Moreover, as a salesperson she should be ready to meet the target and deadlines. Not to mention, she must also be ready to meet her hotel clients any time, even if she must sacrifice her recitation. “It is as part of improving the quality of my human resources.

It is also resumed

with the cleaning and purification of the ancestral heritages.

(BTN/kmb)

(BTN/015)
