Kancing Gumi Temple ancing Gumi Temple is located at Batu Lantang customary village, Sulangai, Petang subdistrict, Badung. History of this temple is not known for sure. Nevertheless, a number of sources in the form of palm-leaf manuscripts mention if the establishment of the Kancing Gumi Temple is closely associated with the history of Batu Lantang customary village. The temple is also believed to be one of the temples having significant importance in the Balinese cosmology and spiritual landscape. To

local community, the temple is believed to be a key determinant to universe or the stability of the Island of Bali and the world. Several sources compiled by Bali Post mention that the sources are related to Kancing Gumi Temple, namely the Dewa Purana Giri Wana outlining the mountains and hills in Bali. In the palm-leaf manuscript is mentioned about the Hyang Gunung Alas as the abode of Lingga Pasupati overgrown by shade trees. It is mentioned that local community cleared the forest in the area to build settlement. At that time, they found a large and high stone. People attempted to find out the stone base, but it was never found. Later on, the stone was named sila mengadeg. The area around the stone was then called Batudawa (long stone) or Batu Lantang customary village. At the location, local people did farming and worshipped God at the long stone. It was then called Kancing Gumi Temple as the abode of God in his manifestation as Hyang Gunung Alas. Apparently the Hyang Gunung Alas was actually the abode of Lingga Pasupati. It was no other than Lord Shiva who has three forms (murti) such as Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva or Rudra. Based on some references, the establishment of Kancing Gumi Temple is associated with the myth regarding the early days of the unstable Island of Bali. Such condition made Lord Pasupati to have a pity and wanted to stabilize it. At that time, Bali only had four mountains namely the Mount Lempuyang in the east, Mount Andakasa in the south, Mount Batukaru in the west and Mount Beratan in the north. Finally, to stabilize the island of Bali, Lord Pasupati cut the peak of Mount Semeru in East Java and stuck it on the Island of Bali and Lombok. Ultimately, the condition of Bali and Lombok Island was stable. Furthermore, in the Dewa Purana is mentioned that after the condition of Bali Island was stable, Lord Pasupati spread the life in form of phallus. As terrestrial stake of Bali Island, it was plugged a phallus in a hill that was later on known as the Batu Lantang or long stone. Such phallus was then known as the Hyang Gunung Alas or Hyang Kancing Gumi. Some historical sources mention that before people knew the term pura (temple) in Bali, they were

more familiar with the term hyang. Based on research, it was concluded if the phallus in the temple area was a menhir. Menhir is a form of prehistoric megalithic that was generally functioned as a place of worship. Structure of the Kancing Gumi Temple is very simple. Shrines at this temple are in the form of phallus consisting of nine rock fractures. Besides, there are also gedong sari, catu meres and catu mujung. B N (BTN/kmb)

Indeed, the area spreading across about two hectares has large trees and small trees, so as to create a peaceful atmosphere. In the past, the hot spring was used as bathing place by local community but poorly maintained. Distinctive Star Fruit Leaf Vegetable

A

t

glance, the vegetable of star fruit leaf (jukut don belimbing) or often called as lawar of star fruit leaf is usually presented in ceremonial events in Bali. By and large, the presentation is divided into two, namely for the offerings to God through oblations as well as presented through buffet invitation. The jukut don belimbing is commonly served with other menus processed by local society. Invitees can pick out and choose their preferred menus. Unfortunately, this star fruit leaf is only liked by certain people. Children are less interested because it’s slightly bitter. However, for adults this menu is very tasty. For people on the Island of the Gods, the star fruit leaf is taken advantage as a vegetable ingredient as it is quite tasty. Other than being easy to get, this leaf is also good for digestion. However, the star fruit leaf used is not arbitrary, but the young one (not too old and not too young). Besides, it does not belong to the type of star fruit having sweet fruit, but the fruit is sour and whitish. Tumpek Kandang:

A Ritual of Anima Conservation

indus in Bali commemorate a festivity of Tumpek Kandang. The festivity falling every Saniscara (Saturday) Pon Wuku Uye actually has a meaning to develop compassion for all the God’s creatures, especially animals. Through the Tumpek Kandang ritual, people are expected to develop the livestock sector to strengthen the economic foundations. Then, how should devotees interpret the Tumpek Kandang? In the Sunarigama palm-leaf manuscript is stated that on Saniscara Pon Uye pinaka prakertining sarwa sato. In other words, the day

should be made the milestone for preserving all kinds of animals. Celebration of the Tumpek Kandang ritual is not meant to worship the animals. It is a religious festival dedicated to worship Lord Shiva Pasupati, a manifestation of God who has created the animals. On Tumpek Kandang, animals especially cattle are made some celebratory oblations. Essentially, devotees worship the Lord Shiva Pasupati as manifestation of God serving as the king of all the living things. In the ritual procession, devotees invoke blessing in order their cattle could be bestowed with prime healthy and safety. However, philosophically the Tumpek Kandang celebration implies that

people should develop compassion for all the living creatures. In the economic context, the procession mandates that agricultural sector in the broader sense (livestock) can be developed to strengthen the economic foundations of society. Sarasamusccaya says that Ayuwa tan masih ring sarwa prani, apan prani ngaran prana, which means not to ignore any care to animals because they are a force of nature. In other words, people must develop compassion for all beings. Especially on Tumpek Kandang, devotees worship God in His manifestation as Lord Shiva Pasupati in order the cattle could be blessed with welfare. Similarly, the prayers are also

recited for other livestock such as pigs, goats, chickens and ducks. Even, a pig for the Hindu community in Bali is often used as a sort of saving or piggy bank. When people hold celebrations, the pigs are slaughter or in emergency case they can be sold to meet the needs. As the animals destined for human food, chickens, ducks, pigs and so forth are often used as a protein source to support the human life. To that end, those animals should be constantly developed. However, other specific animals, especially those belonged to the endangered species, should be preserved. For example, they are green turtles, Bali starlings, deers, monkeys and so forth. These rare animals must be maintained so as not to become extinct. To keep the endangered species from extinction, Balinese people

associate them with mythology. For instance, the animals are regarded as the property (duwe) of God such as the white cow, ape, fruit bats, snake and so on. Through the mythology, devotees are actually encouraged to conserve the wildlife by preserving them based on religious concepts. Mythology seems much more powerful than a call or an appeal to preserve the endangered species. In the Hindu concept, no single thing is without the power of God. Inside them lie the jivatman or the soul. On that account, the concept of developing compassion for all the God’s creatures should be continued. Through the celebration Tumpek Kandang, people should develop them well for the benefit of life and preserve the endangered species in order not to become extinct. (BTN/kmb)

denoting Balinese historical and archeological heritage. By the Denpasar Tourism Office, the Maospahit Temple is made into Z Zone or city tour area, so it is often visited by domestic and foreign tourists. On the signboard in front of the temple, it is stated as a heritage

site protected by Law No. 5/1992. In front of the temple sits grandiose entrance gate of ancient style remaining to use red brick carvings and the crown is engraved in ancient image. However, it is not used to enter into the temple area, but the entrance is through the alley in the south characterized by a red brick compound wall. Well, at the end of the alley there is a fallen temple (candi rebah) as a grand and ancient gate facing south as the entrance. Travelers making a visit must write their identity and purpose. Only Copies of Balinese Manuscripts Stored in Leiden Museum he perception that many Balinese people about original Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts (lontar) are stored in Leiden Museum, in the Netherlands, is wrong. Palm-leaf manuscript researcher, Prof. Dr. H.I.R Hinzler from the Netherlands, recently declared that all the palm-leaf manuscripts in Leiden museum are copies or transcripts, not original Balinese lontar. Moreover, Hinzler who has been researching Balinese palmleaf manuscripts since 1972, siad that the government of Karangasem’s plan to build a palm-leaf manuscript museum Candrabhuana Cultural Park, Amlapura, to house repatriated original palmleaf manuscripts of Bali, especially Karangasem, from Leiden Museum is futile. Prof. Hinzler explained that before there were any Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts in Leiden Museum the Dutch did formal data collection starting 1929 through the Gedong Kirtya Museum. However, before this data was collected there had been a Dutch researcher named Herman Neubronner Van Der Tuuk who wrote a Balinese and Old Javanese dictionary. At that time, he recorded and invited some people to copy the original Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts onto paper, and after copying them, the original manuscripts were immediately returned to Bali. This researcher only had a collec-

tion of a few palm-leaf manuscripts that were given to him as a gift after doing his research. These gifted manuscripts amounted to no more than 200 in number. The total number of palm-leaf manuscripts registered in Leiden Museum, is 6,000 typed copies. The total number of manuscripts and digital versions is approximately 9,000 copies. “At that time, while researching Balinese customary law, the Dutch copied the manuscripts by hand because the Balinese people did not want to give them the originals. The manuscripts were borrowed, copied then returned. The Dutch did not steal the manuscripts” explained Prof. Hinzler who also works in Leiden Museum helping take care of the museum. When other Dutch researchers such as Prof. Hooykas (Prof. Hinzler’s own teacher) did their research), they also had to copy the originals. So, of the thousands of palm-leaf manuscripts kept in Leiden Museum, Hinzler affirmed that the only originals are the ones offered as gifts and that these are relatively few in number compared to the number of copied manuscripts. He added that most of the manuscripts are in fact stored in the Documentation Center in Denpasar. Another Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts reseracher named Sugi Lanus, when met at the same location, explained that in 1929 the Dutch had a project to type out

BTN/kmb

Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts. Manuscripts owned by Balinese people were leant to the Dutch by the Kirtya tema of curators. The curators consisted of nine Brahmin priests (pedanda) and two Dutch researchers. The manuscripts were copied on the spot and six copies were made of each manuscript, one of which was given to Kirtya. Therefor the most current copies of the palm-leaf manuscripts in Leiden Museum actually also exist in Gedong Kirtya Museum. Today, it is unknown who the owners of the original palm-leaf manuscripts were, which memebr of their family is storing them now, where they are stored or whether they are damaed or not. Many Balinese people do not even take care of their manuscripts. Sugi Lanus is currently checking 260 original manuscripts in the home of a Brahmin priest and 80 percent of the lontar are in very worrying condition. “Thankfully, some of the original Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts have been typed or copied, so there is proof. Besides, some manuscripts in the Netherlands are just the backup copies of the ones in Bali”, he added. Sugi Lanus asserted that currently there are still approximately 2,850 original Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts stored in Document Center on Jalan Juanda, Denpasar, collected by some Balinese literati. The Bali Museum also has about 50 original Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts. Now, any customary villages or parties being confused and wishing to find the original manuscripts can check directly with the Document Center. Moreover, Sugi Lanus also claimed to have all the copies. For those wishing to really know, he claimed to be ready to show the manuscripts requested in his database. Some customary villages in Bali are in confusion to arrange awig-awig (customary village bylaw) because they do not find the original palm-leaf manuscript used as the reference. When asked about the establishment of Lontar Museum at Dukuh Penaban village, he said that any village can build community

This temple area is the outermost courtyard or commonly known as Jaba Sisi. In the long pavilion, there are housewives busy making offerings. Here, there is relief in the form of Garuda and Bima, puppet characters of Mahabharata epic. “Garuda, a mythical bird, poses our country’s coat of arms as well as the manifestation of Lord Vishnu, while Bima is a symbol of Lord Brahma, as the Creator,” he explained. Next, when entering the candi bentar (split gates) visitors will find gamelan pavilion, semanggen pavilion, tajuk pavilion and some local plants. After entering candi kurung (arched gates) visitors arrive in the innermost courtyard of the temple. Here, there are a number of heritages such as terracotta statue on the left and right of the temple buildings. There are also terracotta dancer statue and terracotta fragments in the kemimitan chamber shrine.

According to Jero Mangku Ketut Gede Sudiasna, the temple was built by Sri Kebo Iwa, known as the expert of Balinese architecture. In the Wongayah Dalem chronicle considered as the inscription of Maospahit Temple is explained about the journey of Sri Kebo Iwa to teach and lead the community to build temple. He built Rasas Maospahit Temple in Caka 1200 (1278 AD). National Heritage Reserve of Maospahit Temple is designated as a tourist area included in the Z zone covering the Satria Palace, Puputan Badung Square, Badung Market, Pemecutan Palace and Maospahit Temple. Travelers can witness cultural attractions such as majejahitan (offering preparation), dance and gamelan playing. “There are always foreign travelers coming every day. Besides, there are group of travelers having meal together in the temple area,” he explained. (BTN/015)

Four Cultures of Karangasem Included in National Cultural Heritage

our cultures of Karangasem have been defined as national intangible cultural heritage by the central government, in this case the Ministry of Education and Culture. The four cultures are Usaba Sumbu at Timbrah customary village, Usaba Dangsil at Bungaya customary village, typical Selonding Gamelan instrument of Karangasem, and Makare-kare or Mageret Pandan at Tenganan Pegringsingan customary village. Certificate of the stipulation is submitted to the Bali Culture Agency and further handed over to Karangasem Culture Agency on Wednesday (Dec. 6). Finally, it is submitted to each customary village at Candrabhuana Cultural Center, Amlapura. Head of the Karangasem Culture Agency, I Putu Arnawa, said that with the determination of this culture, the central government is also responsible for the conservation efforts. The four traditions are proposed because they are considered the most feasible, according to the requirements set by the central government. Neverthe-

less, the Culture Agency admitted that Karangasem has quite a lot of traditions. Therefore, proposal of the tradition into national intangible cultural heritage will be done gradually every year due to budget constraints. “This is good news for our cultural preservation efforts. We have a lot of unique and sacred cultures, and the rest will also be proposed again gradually,” he said. Previously, central government has named two cultures namely the Gebug Ende at Seraya and Terteran at Jasri village into a national cultural heritage. Both cultures are planned to be proposed to UNESCO as a world cultural heritage, like the typical Geringsing clothes of Tenganan Pegringsingan that originally held a national cultural heritage title was then set by UNESCO into a world cultural heritage. After that, the other cultures will be immediately proposed. They are Usaba Dodol and Siat Sarang at Selat village as well as Siat Ketupat at Tenganan Dauh Tukad village and Apit Yeh village. museum. It is a positive and new phenomenon in the development of Balinese literature. In the community of this village alone, there have been about 400 palm-leaf manuscripts. Later on, they will be added with other borrowed manuscripts to be exhibited at this location so that they can be well maintained. If collected all, the plan to build the Lontar Museum at Dukuh Penaban is ready with 700 manuscripts. If the district government of Karangasem truly wants to build a palm-leaf manuscript museum as well, according to him who is

also a founding team of Lontar Museum of Dukuh Penaban, there is no intention to make a competition in building a museum. However, it should mutually complement. “Later, we will do what is not worked on by the district government. In a palm-leaf manuscript museum, there will be several packages of activities. For example, there are activities of transcribing Balinese script on palm leaves, workshop on the making of palm-leaf manuscript. So, if people want to learn we can provide the lesson in the stages,” he said. (BTN/kmb)

It has even made coordination with the industry,” said the Head of Badung Tourism Office, I Made Badra, in Kuta, not long ago. The promotion will visit major events overseas. Ngurah Rai Airport Gives New Year’s Surprise appiness and pleasure were reflected on the faces of passengers when they first come in 2018. They were greeted vibrantly by the entire managerial ranges of the Ngurah Rai Airport. Mascot Dance of the Angkasa Pura I and Balinese traditional gamelan music welcomed QZ537 passengers from Perth that landed in Bali at 00:03 Local Time. The passengers also received a flower bouquet and souvenirs in the form of beach sarong. “To us, passengers are the most important of all service entities at the airport. They are the first and most valuable customer. Therefore, in this special moment like the New Year’s Eve, we’d like to give something special to passengers,” said General Manager of Ngurah Rai Airport, Yanus Suprayogi. Previously, the Emirates (EK

Angkasa Pura I (Persero), Devy Suradji and General Manager Ngurah Rai Airport, Yanus Suprayogi, with the provision of flower garland and souvenirs. Yanus added the first pleasant experience at the airport is effectively helping improve the mood of tourists. “Moreover, they have spent hours for traveling to Bali. The activities like this can be a mood booster and become the beginning of a fun holiday,” he added. The journey in 2017, in the past three quarters the Ngurah Rai proved to have successfully aligned itself as the first World Best Airport according to the Airport Council International with

achievement of score amounting to 4.99 for the category of airports with 15 to 25 passengers per year. As the management of 13 airports, Angkasa Pura I believed the most effective effort in improving service quality is by referring to customer needs. “We strive to continuously innovate and to be in the first position of the world as now we have to do something beyond expectation,” he explained. As was done this New Year’s Eve, passengers and other airport service users were surprised by the flash mob action of a group of orchestra and choir players who played the Auld Lang Syne and Symphony No.9 of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy song. An interesting thing is the presence of Balinese gamelan elements in this orchestra’s performance, a unique and different collaboration. (BTN/015)

ilence Day or Nyepi is a New Year’s celebration for the Hindus all over the world. Various activities are held to celebrate this New Year. Procession of the celebration starts from the melasti or melis or purificatory rite for ritual paraphernalia and sanctified effigies to source of water such as to the beach is also intended for purifying impurities contained in human and its mind so the

implementation of Nyepi Day can run smoothly, until the Ngembak Geni on the following day. Interestingly, in the series of Nyepi Day there is Pengrupukan, falling one day before. On this day, people parade ogohogoh or papier máché demon to expel all the bad forces that can affect the course of the Nyepi celebration. Ogoh-ogoh are made in various sizes and paraded around the village. The activity of parading ogoh-ogoh is a special attraction for tourists coming to Bali. Moreover, the ogoh-ogoh is also a thing that makes tourists amazed at the uniqueness of the arts owned by Bali.It is not enough to see ogoh-ogoh on Pengrupukan Day because Pengrupukan feast only takes place once a year like the Nyepi day.

To relieve the curiosity with the ogoh-ogoh that actually exists only once in a year, in Bali there is now the ogohogoh museum displaying various kinds of ogoh-ogoh. It is the Bali Ogoh-Ogoh Museum. The museum is a place dedicated to preserving one of the Balinese traditions namely the ogoh-ogoh.

ali has become a magnet of Indonesia in international tourism. Every day domestic and foreign tourists visit the island to witness a variety of natural beauty, indigenous customs, culture and distinctive way of life owned by Balinese community. In addition to offering natural beauty, indigenous customs, culture and people’s way of life, Bali also presents a variety of other tourist attractions such as religious tourism, cuisines, shopping delight, culture and ecotourism or environmental tourism. Lately, environmental tourism has become a trend. It does not just sell the products yielded, but also invites consumers to know and get involved directly in the manufacture of the quite unique products because it is able to attract tourists to come and enjoy

the environment-based attractions. “The potential of eco-tourism in Bali is very high because Bali has many repeated guests, so the chances are quite large considering that tourists coming to Bali is more than once, especially those with family. They want to enjoy something new and get the value of education. Surely, this can become a new potential of destination. One of them is chocolate processing on behalf of Pod Chocolate Factory. It is targeting local and foreign tourists through environmental tourism concept. We offer an ecotourism concept through factory integrated with outlet and tourism located at Bali Elephant Camp, Petang subdistrict, Badung,” said the owner and young entrepreneur, IGAA Inda Trimafo Yudha. “Pod Chocolate Factory was founded in 2010. Here, visitors will be served with chocolate tour,

where visitors will be invited to visit and see the process of making chocolate and short learning on the making of chocolate. Besides, they can make their own chocolate and be taken home,” said IGAA Inda Trimafo Yudha, the owner of Pod Chocolate. “All the raw materials used are local products of Bali obtained through cooperation with cacao farmer cooperatives in Bali. Otherwise, if the materials happen to be unavailable, we look to other regions in Indonesia,” she explained. She added that to make the product clearly identified and always be looked for, it is necessary to have distinction and characteristics. These are the capital to compete and armed with this we must certainly do innovation. Here, we produce chocolate with a variety of flavors such as the flavor of salad, pineapple, ginger, cloves to chili in addition to sweet chocolate in general.

would like to introduce more ogoh-ogoh figures to the world community as it cannot be found any time. However, it can only be found on the Caka New Year’s Eve in the series of Nyepi Day celebration where Balinese people make the ogoh-ogoh. In addition, the ogoh-ogoh is also one of the works of art covering many fields of the art such as sculpture, architecture, painting, decoration, music, dance et cetera. So, it is considered very important to immortalize some parts of it as an effort to participate in preserving Balinese culture. Existence of the museum makes the world community more familiar with Balinese culture. At the same time, it is also meant to support the interest and talent of Balinese young generation in the art creativity. The operation and maintenance of the network between the lower area and highland area is very different. “So, the price difference happens due to geographical conditions,” he explained. Regent Made Gianyar said that from 2011 Bangli district government has focused on building Bangli from the village through leading innovation programs such as large amount of village allocation fund (ADD), Gerbangdessigot, Gerbang Gita Santi and hot mix asphalt program to village until 2017. For Pamsimas program, he cooperates with PDAM Bangli because to access this program each village should meet one of the requirements namely having a water source. Meanwhile, at Serai village there is no adequate water source. “On that account, we are cooperating with PDAM Bangli and doing the tapping to the network of PDAM in order to get water to be further channeled to storage basin and then channeled back to household.

They were enthusiastic to walk from Dalem Temple to Beji Cengcengan Temple of Sukawati village bordered with Guwang village. Sacred value of this tradition lies in the purpose of mepeed namely picking up holy water at Taman Beji Temple. Furthermore, this holy water will be used for ritual in the temple anniversary that lasted for four days until Friday (Dec. 29). “So during the pujawali, the mapeed procession is held every day in the afternoon,” said Chief of Sukawati customary village, I Nyoman Suwantha, on Tuesday. Like the mepeed procession elsewhere, at Sukawati village it began with rows of lolentakan, umbrella, pasepan and other ritual paraphernalia, while male or female residents in Balinese make-

A chinese tourist is taking picture in Tanjung Benoa, Bali very year, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Bali increases. In 2014, there were only 400,00 Chinese visitors to Bali and in 2015 this number rose to 600,000. IN 2016 the number of Chinese tourists rose again to 980,000 and in 2017 there were 1.3 million tourists from China who visited Bali. Bali receives the largest number of tourists from China followed by Australia with 1 million visitors to Bali per year. Vice Consulate General of China, Chen Wei, said that because of the increasing number of Chinese visitors to Bali a tourist guide book has become necessary. In a meeting between the Chinese Consul General , travel agencies and tourism stakeholders on Friday (Jan. 5), The Consul General launched a Bali tourist guide book. The guide book provides information about Bali in general for things like currency and exchange rates, transportation, drinking water hygiene, working hours for, shops and restaurants, tax / tips, religion and customs, natural disasters, accident prevention tips, travel insurance, immigration provisions, provisions on how to obtain protection services from consulates, tourism developments, contact persons, et cetera. With the issuance of this guide book, Wei said that he hopes that the issuance of this guide book will help improve cooperation with local governments and relations between the two countries. “We hope this will strengthen the relationship between our two countries”, he said. inconveniences caused by the eruptions of Mount Agung, Chinese citizens are primary concerned about financial losses. “If there is another eruption and the airpot closes then visitors will have to spend more money. Insurance does not cover all these expenses. We have heard the good news that the government is prepared to provide assistance if Mount Aung erupts again. Hopefully this will be realised if need be”, said Wei. Wei also said that he hopes that more Chinese tourists will visit Bali in 2018 and that there is expected to be an increase in visitors over the Lunar New Year. He also stressed that the Chinese government has never forbidden its citizens form visiting Bali and that the cancelled flights from China to Bali were based on the policies of individual airlines. Section Head of Immigration Office Communication of Ngurah Rai Airport, Misnal Arianto, said that since the free-vias policy was enacted for 169 countries – including China, there has indeed been an increase in the number of tourists from China. Of the 1.3 million Chinese tourist who visited last year, there were only 40 cases of violations of immigration laws, including expired residence permits and abuse of tourist stay permits by people who worked here. Tourism Subdivision Head of Vital Object Security Directorate at Bali Police, Indrayati, said that in terms of crime, Bali is safe. Pickpocketing, robbery and other forms of theft are less frequent in Bali than in other regions, so Chinese citizens should not be worried about visiting Bali. B N (BTN/kmb)

Chief of customary village, I Nyoman Suwantha, affirmed that mepeed on every temple anniversary must always be held. In addition to maintaining the tradition, it also serves as cultural

preservation. He also always reminded his residents to maintain the makeup and fashion having become the typical styles of Sukawati. One is them is the use of rear kancut for adult women. “Balinese makeup and fashion style indeed have dynamic nature. In the past, they were dominated by modified style, but now we gradually start to improve,” he explained. He also involved specifically the association of customary village apparatus spouse to provide coaching for residents that would participate in the mapeed. He also presents female figures in his work which symbolically poses an expression of the problem of nature. Then, Ketut Suasana aka Kabul presents the works dominated by latest natural phenomena that occur in Bali such as Mount Agung eruption. Kabul’s works depart from a traditional drawing in which the line elements become dominant and often present symbols of duality of the nature itself,

while Putu Sudiana comes with abstract works. Another artist, Diwarupa, highlights the works departing from a formalistic tendency. The question of duality between the natural and the artificial is presented in the works of Isa Ansori. Suwandi Waeng presents the works inspired by plastic waste, while Bambang BP with drawing works on paper, Heri Catur Prasetya features drawing techniques as visual language choice and Rifa’i expresses abstract works. Melodious choirs by 21 children really amazed all the guests in attendance. Moreover, the strains of music and guitar were accompanied by excellent Christmas carols. In addition to choirs and guitar play, the party was also entertained by some dances with tambourines making the atmosphere more vibrant. The foundation located on Jalan Cokroaminoto 34 Denpasar takes care of totally 41 girls of various ages from 4 to 20 years. The Salvation Army Foundation ‘Anugerah Girls’ Home Bali has a vision of preparing for their better future so they will become independent, fearful of God. hese works of art do not only present beautiful scratches, sweet colors or unique objects, but also imply meaning and moral messages. The encouragement and invitation are always felt when observing every painting coming with aphrodisiac colors. Probably, it happens because the exhibition featuring 40 works of Balinese and Gorontalo artists presents various traces of Balinese art scene. The exhibition opened on December 28 is in conjunction with the opening of the Denpasar Festival (Denfest) and will last until February 26, 2018. The participating artists in the exhibition include Made Budiadnyana, Wayan Anyon Muliastra, Made Sukada (Romi), Wayan Wirawan, I Putu Suardana (VJ), Kadek DEM, Ketut Jaya (Kaprus), Nyoman Gede Darmawan (Kuwek), Nyoman Arisana, Kadek Jefri Wibowo, I Made Budiyasa, Putu Nana Narta Wijaya, Putu Suhartawan, Nyoman Kariasa, Nyoman Handi Yasa, Made Jendra. Meanwhile, the artists from Gorontalo consist of Arya Budi, Pipin Idris, Mohammad Rivai Katili and Muhammad Azis Al-

Katiri. Apparently the exhibition promises a moment to appreciate and examine the achievements of ideas of the artists from two different regions, both geographically and culturally, namely Bali and Gorontalo. It can be seen in expressing the ideas on the interpretation of the cultural values. “The exhibition entitled ‘Reinterpreting Culture # 3” is an ongoing exhibition activity designed by curatorial team of Gurat Institute as an independent research institute having focused on research of visual arts and culture based on Balinese art through curation and research,” said Wayan Seriyoga Parta and Made Susanta Dwitanaya, the curators of this exhibition. Reinterpreting Culture, continued Yoga, poses a series of exhibitions aimed at inviting the artists to showcase their works attempting to present visual interpretation of cultural values in the form of curatorial framing. “Reinterpreting Culture of the third series looks different from the previous series. Other than involving Balinese artists, it also presents the works of artists from Gorontalo

that aesthetically or thematically explore the idea of interpretation of their cultural values in Gorontalo,” he explained. Mayor of Denpasar, I.B. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra, when visiting the exhibition said that other than being a matter of cultural issues, this exhibition is also meant to support cultural tourism by presenting more cultural works to be continuously matured. “This Art Space can strengthen the civilization of the city as a culturalbased city that can be represented through artworks such as painting. This art activity must continue to grow, so it has its own identity and the artists have a medium to show off their expression like today,” he said. Moreover, it has cooperated with the Regional Tourism Promotion Board (BPPD) of Denpasar, so it is very suitable for the strengthening of cultural tourism. By having a strong self identity, we will be more confident to attract tourist visits. “If we strengthen our cultural tourism, we have to highlight the existing culture,” said Rai. “If we see from this small exhibition room, we can observe various artistic and cultural products denoting the expression of civilization of people’s life, so that we can assess that the civilization of the city itself is very high,” said Rai Mantra. Meanwhile, Chairman of the BPPD Denpasar, I.B. Gede Sidartha Putra, said the existence of the Art Space is very strategic considering it is located right in the heart of the city. This becomes one of the main capitals in promoting the works of the artists of Denpasar City. “We hope the exhibition facilitated by Denpasar municipality can continuously motivate the painters to work all the times,” he hoped. Can Bali possibly survive without the existence tourism? This kind of question has emerged for several times in formal and informal discussions or was at issue in the Internet or social media lately. mergence of this question is not without a reason. First of all, it happened due to the impact of Ngurah Rai Airport closure following the eruption of Mount Agung some time ago. Many tourists were not handled well when going back home because we do not have experience like this. Actually, everything should be prepared well. There must be a kind of ‘Plan B’ or a kind of contingency plan to deal with it. However, it’s okay. After it passed, all parties ranging from central government, regional government to some tourism stakeholders meet. They agreed to work together to overcome it. Finally, the formulation was established both in the level of regulation and practical things

in the field of how to deal with tourists if the airport is closed again. It includes provision of free one-night stay up to the free bus transportation service to the nearest airport as well as once lunch. All services are totally free of charge. All the parties agreed and on paper everything can run according to the plan. Hopefully, there will be no more eruption disaster so the airport does not need to be closed again. Hence, such ‘chaos’ will not happen again. Let’s be back to the original question, can Bali survive without tourism? If seeing the facts and data issued by the government, it seems difficult for Bali to get out of the vortex of tourism. The words ‘to get out’ might sound too extreme. What may be more appropriate is how to start not so dependent any longer on tourism business. In other words, we must prepare other business ventures outside of tourism. After almost two decades of the tragedy of Bali bombing in 2002, we must actually think how not to depend solely on the tourism business. There must be an accompanying sector that may not be as strong as tourism but provides an alternative and rational choice to live. A maxim says that ‘please do not put all your eggs in one basket.’ When it falls, all the eggs will be broken. So, we need to think about a breakthrough measure. Since 2002, we have not done much and intelligently anticipated this. Actually, many things can be done. The agricultural, plantation, fishery and export-oriented sectors of creative industries remaining related to tourism are highly viable. So, we need an accompanying sector. We do not mean to completely go out of tourism sector. Probably, it may be excessive if saying that tourism is (for the time being) the ‘life’ of Bali. Inevitably, that’s the reality. B N

Responding to the current condition of Bali tourism where the number of tourist visits is down, they are now focusing on the arrangement of hotel facilities. “We’re mostly doing clean-ups to make the accommodation convenient,” they said. According to them, recently the number of tourist arrivals began to increase even though they are still in small number. Australian and domestic tourists seemed to have graced hotel occupancy by degrees. However, they have not yet spread more evenly, so the number looks less. “Japanese and Chinese tourists drastically decline. behind the lobby of Sens Hotel, Ubud. This café offers a variety of delicious menus. They are starting from Balinese food, Indonesian food, Western food, Chinese food to various drinks. The dining atmosphere is tranquil and comfortable. Strains of music sometimes collaborating with the sound of natural pond water give a sense of peace while enjoying the food. Yonne Café & Bar at Sens Hotel is located in the center of the international tourism village, precisely on Jalan Sukma, Tebesaya

hamlet, Ubud, Gianyar. The restaurant coming with modern style in combination with traditional one is open every day from the morning until the next morning or 24 hours. “It happens because Yonne Café & Bar is not only serving the in-house guests, but also the walking-in guests who are enjoying the unique Ubud tourism area,” said Edhu Alamsyah, Public Relations. Of the existing menus, Sens Roast Duck and Balinese menus are favorites for tourists. raw condiment and spicy condiment. In addition, the seasoning used to smear the duck meat is quite special, resulting in soft and

tender meat. Moreover, the duck meat is specially imported from Uncle Sam’s country. The Balinese menu is equally delicious. A set menu consists of cone-shaped white rice, lawar, twisted satay, soup served with coconut shells, shrimp, shredded chicken, fried-grated coconut, crackers, raw condiment, and eggs. Balinese menu is served with banana leaves, like serving the menu in the royal style as in the past time. This menu comes with dessert. When serving these Balinese menus, guests will also be informed about the menus available. “Both menus are prepared by Chef Matthew from Australia,” said Edhu. Another menu that is also in high demand is Chinese food. This menu is not only ordered by tourists from China, but also by other foreign tourists and local communities. Other than being delicious, Chinese Food is also sold at an affordable price, so it can be ordered by anyone. “We also bring in a special chef from China to prepare this menu. Understandably, in addition to Yonne Café & Bar at Sens Hotel, there

are few restaurants that offer Chinese cuisine in this tourist area of Ubud,” he explained. Breakfast, lunch or dinner is right at Yonne Café & Bar of Sens Hotel Ubud. This restaurant is also very romantic so it is good for enjoying wine at night or just chatting with partner. If being lucky, at certain times tourists can see traditional cultural performances because the Yonne Café & Bar at Sens Hotel is located in the center for activities of the Ubud community. S reported previously, Jo- kowi’s visit to Bali is to conduct a Limited Meeting in Sanur related to the status of Mount Agung. In addition, the president also had time to walk along Kuta Beach to greet tourists and make a video on Bali’s latest condition related to the eruption of Mount Agung. He also had time to con-

vince tourists that Bali is safe and no need to hesitate to spend holidays in Bali even though the Mount Agung is in the warning alert level. One of the things remaining to be left after Jokowi’s visit to Bali is the pride of the trust given by the number one figure in Indonesia who stayed at Grand Inna Kuta (GIK) with several ministers.

of Hindu ceremonies and rituals. An archaic usage of the D ponents Sanskrit word ‘dhupa’ refers to ‘being exposed to the sun’s rays’. Now-

upa is the Balinese word for incense and is one of the essential com-

adays, burning dupa symbolizes Dewa Agni – the Lord of Fire, and functions to rid an area of bad spirits. Dupa is also used as a means to connect one’s prayers to God through the smoke that ascends to heaven and dupa also functions as a witness during ceremonies. Many believe that the sweet fragrance of burning dupa invites the human spirit to align with the divine. Natural dupa is made of starch, charcoal and dried flowers that are compressed and dried onto a thin stick of bamboo, though today there are many variants on this recipes. B N

Third Birthday of Tebesaya Cottage

The Eggs in One Basket

Andarikma said that in dealing with various problems caused by the eruption of Mount Agung all parties must be united and natural disasters should not be addressed negatively. Right now, the occupancy rate of Fontana is 40 percent, remaining low when compared to the same month a year earlier reaching 80 percent,” said Putri. B N (BTN/015)

”Peed” tradition of Sukawati maintains its fashion style Hundreds of residents participated in the mapeed tradition held in a series of pujawali (temple anniversary) at Dalem Gede Temple of Sukawati on Anggara Kliwon Tambir on Tuesday (Dec. 26). Aside from being a sacred activity, the tradition adorning every anniversary of trinity temples of Sukawati village is also held by maintaining Balinese customary fashion with the typical style of Sukawati village.

undreds of male and female residents walked in pair and dressed in Balinese makeup and fashion ranging from children, teenagers, housewives coalesced into PKK group to the elderly.

Consulate General of China issues tourist guide book

The first run printed 30,000 copies of the tourism guide book that will be distributed to travel agencies, hotels, airports, et cetera. Previously, the same book had been published in a shorter

At Sukawati, there is a term known as krama penyatusan. “We have 12 hamlets which coalesced into 4 satusan (group), where on the first day was the turn of Tebuana, then Palak on the second day, Telabah on the third day and Gelumpang on the last day,” he explained.

They were asked to promote Balinese makeup and fashion with the simple style of Sukawati. “So, in terms of cost, it is affordable to all levels of society,” he added. B N (BTN/kmb)

cycle itself. Meanwhile, Wayan Suastama departs from the most elementary case of the fine art of the line.

Sharing Love of Christmas

oinciding with Christmas Day of December 25, 2017, Fontana Hotel Bali, a PHM Collection, held a special Christmas Carols Dinner at Portabella Bistro with three special menus carefully prepared by Chef of Portabella Bistro. Enjoying special menus of Christmas made increasingly warmer while seeing the dance performance by children from The Salvation Army ‘Anugerah’ Girls’ Home Bali. Their daily activities are studying, cooking, keeping the area clean and developing their abilities through worship, studying bible and meeting worship in church. “In a series of celebrating Christmas Day, we would like to celebrate the joy of Christmas and share the love with the fellows, especially with the children from The Salvation Army ‘Anugerah Girls’ Home Bali Foundation. Hopefully, the peace of Christmas will be always with us all,” said I Wayan Karta, General Manager. (BTN/r) B N

This second exhibition presents 20 works of art where each participant displays their latest works. The exhibition itself was opened by Pande Wayan Suteja Neka on Saturday (Dec. 23) and will last for a month until January 23, 2018. Balinese artists participating in the exhibition include Nyoman Sujana Kenyem, Putu Sudiana Bonuz, Nyoman Diwarupa, I Wayan Suastama and I Ketut Kabul Suasana. Meanwhile, the artists of Batu are Bambang BP, Hery Catur Prasetya, Isa Anssory, Rifa’i and Suwandi Waeng. I Made Susanta Dwitanaya, who acted as the curator, said the exhibition can be read as a moment that brings together the ideas of each artist from two different regions: Bali and Batu. The exhibition proved the ten artists show off their passion and awareness to keep moving and fostering their togetherness in creative works together. hese works of art do not only present beautiful scratches, sweet colors or unique objects, but also imply meaning and moral messages.

He is a painter inside the compound of the Taman Ayun temple. Besides, he is the first person who had the idea to establish an ogohogoh museum in Bali. For many years, I Ketut Nuada has hunted ogoh-ogoh for collection at this location. Ultimately, after all collections have been obtained, he officially opened the ogoh-ogoh Bali in April 2012. Gianyar explained the difference in water prices happens due to differences in geographical conditions. Meanwhile, headman of

Where To Go . . .

should be made the milestone for preserving all kinds of animals.

(BTN/kmb)

ome on visit the Maospahit Temple! The temple located at Gerenceng hamlet, southern end of Jalan Sutomo is not an ordinary temple. It has ancient building style and was built in Caka 1200 (1278 AD). This temple belongs to the National Cultural Reserve

denoting Balinese historical and archeological heritage.

Next, put on a scarf having been prepared by Jero Mangku Ketut Gede Sudiasna, the man who keeps the temple. Travelers are welcome to make donation because there is no charge for admission ticket. “Kori Agung (main entrance) in front of the temple is praised every worshipping day and temple festival falling every full moon in May and November,” said Jero Mangku Ketut Gede Sudiasna.

(BTN/kmb)

Indeed, the number of tourist arrivals in 2017 decreased by 0.78 percent compared to 2016. The number of visits in 2017 amounted to 3,497,825 while in 2016 reached 3,525,335 visitors. “This happens because of impact of Mount Agung eruption followed by the Ngurah Rai Airport closure,” said Operations Manager, I Ketut Toya Adnyana, amid the Open House on Monday (Jan. 1). Toya Adnyana said though there is a decrease in the number of visits due to several factors, he is optimistic the number of tourists visit to Tanah Lot will increase every year. “It is a natural factor that cannot be predicted. We can only strive to provide maximum services and more intensify

The attraction relying on the charm of nature and the holiness aura of the temple in the middle of the sea is full of tourists, dominated by domestic tourists. “Today, they are dominated by domestic tourists, while foreign countries also exist, but the number is fewer than before the eruption of Mount Agung disaster,” he said. According to Toya Adnyana, beautiful sunset remains to become the prominent attraction to tourists. Many tourists also took snapshot with the background of Tanah Lot Temple located in the middle of the sea. Holy springs and snakes also attracted tourists. “There are also many local people saying prayers at Tanah Lot Temple and other temples in the local object. Now, this New Year is coinciding with full moon,

In 2018, explained Toya Adnyana, the management still prioritizes the arrangement of object areas and infrastructure so as to be more optimal. local community, the temple is believed to be a key determinant to universe or the stability of the Island of Bali and the world.
