Priest of Pucak Petali Temple, I Wayan Mundra, when met a few days ago explained the name of Pucak Petali originates from the word butali meaning ‘the earth’ and the word tali meaning ‘straps’ and when combined meaning ‘the supporter of universe.’ However, until now it has not been found any chron-

promoting destination, this event also supports community economy and welfare. Denpasar City government further budgeted funding for infrastructure preparation and festival facilities, such as stage, public toilet, sanitation and more. “We hope the Sanur village activity can contribute to Bali and national scale tourism, and improving real economy for all levels of community,” he adds. According to Sidharta Putra, the festival entering its 12th year has embraced creative economy actors to present ideas and products during the performance, exhibition, workshop and many activities during the festival duration. Many young talents join the festivities that attract thousands of visitors daily. To maintain its existence and quality, Sidharta Putra or better known as Gusde always involved experts to curate. For selection of cultural art for example, the committee always involves senior artists to determine which group can perform. “For music, we are assisted by musician Indra Lesmana to select performances on the main stage,” he says.

This is shown from hotel bookings and rescheduling of tourists, following the festival dates. Meanwhile, BRI Regional Vice President Bali-Nusra Yoyok Mulawarman‎ says BRI has supported SVF since 2010 and this time they want to optimize the non cash transaction service.”All transactions in the festival area will be cashless, using digital card or electronic money,” he claims. Visitors using Brizzi Card electronic money will receive various bonuses and prizes. Yoyok says this offer is provided to visitors that open a BRI BritAma account, register for ebanking, apply credit card or purchase a Brizzi card. Furthermore, Bank BRI will appoint 146 Small medium enterprises and cooperatives /SME&C (33 SME’s among them are educated by BRI) through product exhibition during the festival. “Through this festival we hope to increase the fee-based income and develop other business potentials linked to SME&C,” said Yoyok. eople in Tanah Lot area are very open to sharing their unique cultural heritage and the spiritual wisdom they have nurtured over centuries.

Visitors to Tanah Lot will be warmly welcomed to most temples and ceremonies. There are, however, certain codes of conduct that visitors should follow to offer re-

spect for the Balinese and their culture. When attending a Tanah Lot Temple ceremony, remember that it is not a party but a celebration to welcome the gods down to earth. Balinese always, no matter how many hardships they may face in their material life, put on their finest traditional clothing as a gesture of respect to both the worldly hosts of the event and the divine guests. Women wear a sarong, a long length of cloth wrapped from waist to ankles, a lacy blouse called a kebaya, and a sash tied around the waist. They will often tie up their hair in elaborate styles, and decorate it with fresh tropical flowers. If they own a piece of precious gold jewelry, they will wear it, and they will wear makeup and lipstick, for the Balinese gods delight in beauty. Men as well will be sure to dress respectfully, in a sarong, their best shirt or ceremonial jacket, a sash around the waist and an elaborately folded headdress (Udeng). The Balinese are thrilled to see visitors wearing

eta cake, a typical pastry produced by Balinese community, almost fills every single offering presented on Galungan falling on Wednesday (Feb 1). The cake sizing 10 cm x 4 cm is folded like a fan and looks sweet wrapped in plastic, either in terms of its form and flavor. This cake is durable up to two weeks. Other than for oblation, many people also purchase it as snack for guests. In the past, the reta cake was made in a larger size for decoration of gebogan put adjacent to gipang cake. Reta cake is placed in the middle of gebogan, and flanked with gipang cake of greater size. Even, some areas in Bangli have a greater size of the reta cake. It looks like a wheel and is enough to be eaten by two to three people. Now, the reta cake that is unknown for sure when it first appeared has been made in smaller size. The change does not only have something to do with packaging, but the flavor has also been made into more savory and delicious. With a new look, the reta cake has now embellished many traditional markets and leading supermarkets in major cities in Bali. The price is very affordable, namely IDR 1,000 per piece. Balinese ceremonial dress and deeply appreciate the respect it shows. So if you want to share the experience of attending a ceremony, ask a Balinese friend or someone in your hotel to help you find the correct clothing and show you how to wear it. Here are some things to keep in mind if you wish to participate in a Tanah Lot Temple Ceremony: At minimum, wear a sarong and a sash to attend a ceremony or enter a temple. Women should wear blouses with sleeves that cover their shoulders. It’s all right to wrap your sarong over your shorts or dress. Never position yourself higher than the offerings or the priest, or climb temple walls or statues to get a better photo angle. Do not walk in front of people praying. Be sensitive with your camera and flash, and respect the religious nature of the occasion. Women who are menstruating are not allowed to enter temples. This is not necessarily a sign of gender discrimination, but a general prohibition against blood on holy ground. (BTN/015)

Bhinneka Tunggal Ika Photo Exhibition at Griya Santrian Gallery hineka Tunggal Ika is a symbolic context of unity having become an option of photographers to be revealed through their camera snapshots. They feature various photographs with the theme of diversity and uniqueness that can educate and give the spirit that diversity is beautiful. The photographs are the work of 34 photographers showcased in the Sanur Village Festival at Griya Santrian Gallery taking place on August 4–19, 2017. This curated photo exhibition is the eight times held since the implementation of the Sanur Village Festival having reached the twelfth time this year. The photographs are visualization of the activities of Indonesian society reflecting the Bhinneka Tunggal Ika or Unity in Diversity as a living philosophy within the framework of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). Diverse in terms of religion, language, tribe and culture, but the activities show a sense of unity as the nation of Indonesia. For instance, there is photograph entitled ‘Wayang Wong Sutasoma’ (Wayan Gunadi). In the book Sutasoma written by Mpu Tantular is mentioned the phrase Bhinneka Tunggal Ika Tan Hana Dharma Mangrwa meaning ‘unity in diversity, there is no ambiguous truth.’ On the coat of arms, the phrase Bhinneka Tunggal Ika is written on a tape gripped by the Garuda Pancasila is immortalized in the photograph ‘Together in Diversity’ (Gede Sudika Pratama) and ‘Bhinneka Tunggal Ika Maha Sakti’ (by I Wayan Gede Supartha). The photographers also made the format of philosophy entitled Bhinneka Tunggal Ika as appears in photographs entitled ‘Beauty of Diversity’ (Anom Manik Agung), ‘Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, Reflection of Diversity’ (I Made Adi Dharmawan), ‘You’re My Best Friend’ (Puja Astawa), ‘I, You and We Laugh Together’ (Kadek Arya Wahyu Diputra) and a photo entitled ‘Barong’ (Wayan Aksara). The real concept of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity) is reflected through the coexisting interfaith places of worship in Nusa Dua as showed off in the photo entitled ‘Puja Mandala’ (Nyoman Arya Suartawan). Besides, the photographers try to find the point of conception of diversity in an activity initiated together which appears in the photograph ‘Collaborative Art’ (Made Dwi Priyatna Indrawan), ‘Megibung (Shared Meals)’ (KM Agus Mahendra) and ‘Ceremony’ (Nur Efendi), ‘Ceremony at the Foot of Semeru’ (Putu

Somehow, a lot of customers prefer to purchase the cake to her. “I make this cake in a special way, so that it can be enjoyed as daily snacks, not just for filling in the offerings,” she explained. Suastini said the material used to make the reta cake was 1 kg cooked rice flour, 1 tablespoon of white

sticky rice flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, coconut and sugar to taste. At first, the rice flour and sticky rice flour were mixed together with salt and then stirred. Subsequently, it was poured with warm water. Grated coconut was then added and stirred finely for about 15 minutes. After that, it was molded with the reta cake mold and then fried. In the meantime, the sugar was mixed with water to make a sugar sauce. The color of cake was pursuant to taste. Then, the cool reta cake was then smeared with the sugar sauce. According to her, the best selling was the colorless reta cake because its sugar was still natural.

nimal flesh is often used to fill in oblations such in the tebasan and peras oblations. By and large, the animal whose grilled flesh used to fill in some oblations is chicken and sometime people also use ducks. Other than for the oblation, the flesh is also taken advantage to make food such as satay and so on. Besides, people also often use pork in various preparations. However, in reality people should not always use flesh of living animal for their oblations. Ida Bagus Alit said that poultry are usually used as an iber-iber where this animal will be released or thrown alive. After that, it will walk away shortly after it has been spinning around for three times. This procession is meant to determine the direction or point out the direction which path should be taken by the Atma in order to reach heaven. Meanwhile, I Gede Agus Budi Adnyana, added that chicken and ducks are also used in alive condition during the ceremony like dewa yadnya where the animals with

other oblations are carried when surrounding shrines in a series of ceremonial procession. Additionally, each community holding this will also bring along yellow rice to be eaten by the chickens and ducks. “The duck itself functions as a controller and represents satvika (goodness, constructive, harmony) aspect, while chicken is a symbol of creation or rajas (passion, active, confused) and the body. Meanwhile, the white and yellow rice seeds have significance of prosperity and happiness,” he said. Budi Adnyana added that in the ritual procession of pitra yadnya, there is procession known as mapurwa daksina where the animal used in the rituals will be taken to go around the ceremony location clockwise, and devotees will usually use white buffalo. Similar opinion was conveyed by I Nyoman Kunuk, the owner of the ivory cattle from Kekeran hamlet, Selanbawak, Marga, Tabanan. He said that murwa daksina ritual procession with the use of ivory cattle is commonly found in Nyekah and Ngerit procession only and not applied in other cere-monies. The

process itself is done by leading the cow surround the Pradnyan pavilion for three times and should walk slowly and carefully so that the white or yellow cow rectangle containing silver and others can be stepped on. In accordance with the belief of local community, the ivory cow is a symbol of cattle or nandini ox functioning as the vehicle of Lord Shiva. In the procession of this ceremony, the cow is supposedly ridden by the deceased, while in the ritual the deceased is hoped to be able to go to the abode of Lord Shiva. As the accompaniment, devotees must chant the Aji Kembang psalmody. He also participates in chanting the psalmody even though it should be done by local people. “Uniqueness in the belief of Balinese people regarding the ceremonial procession or ngiterin lies in myth that if the cow is defecating or urinating at the location, it will be very good or serves as a boon. This happens because they believe that both the dung and urine will also be good for the fertility of the plants in their fields,” he added. (BTN/was)

The ceremony was attended by all Hindu staff and employees with a great atmosphere of togetherness. The atmosphere of the hotel was also different as decorated pursuant to the nuance of the ceremony. “This ceremony is to balance spiritual and secular life as well as express gratitude to God,” said General Manager I Wayan Karta. Therefore, all employees wear traditional Balinese attires in serving guests. “We are thankful to God because He has endowed us, the hotel and all guests with blessing, happiness and safety, so that we are always comfortable and peaceful,” said Karta. Other than having religious value, the offering to God also serves as a cultural preservation and creates cultural attractions at hotel. Local high waves become an attractive place for surfers. It can be taken approximately 20 minutes by car or motorcycle from Kuta and turn left on the road section to Tanah Lot. Road access to Berawa Beach can pass through Batubelig, but, and the best is through the access adjacent to the Villa Legong Keraton precisely located on the Berawa Beach. The word ‘ Hulu’ (upstream) in balinese language can mean differently in accordance with context. One of them is ‘situated upstream.’ Another meaning is ‘relating to the early stages in the operations of a business or industry.’ So, what is the meaning of ‘upstream’ in context of the tourism in Bali? n my discussion with some experts of various fields a few days ago was mentioned that in the middle of the splendid development of Bali tourism industry today, many parties feel the negative impact. Seeing this, all parties should begin to turn toward the ‘upstream.’ Why should turn to the ‘upstream’ because the ‘upstream’ is the headwaters, the source of wa-

I

ter and so on. The ‘upstream’ of Bali tourism is culture. Never forget this. In other words, the tourism developed in Bali is a cultural tourism inspired by Hinduism. Do not ever try to forget this. Culture is ‘the upstream,’ the center of thinking how the Balinese are behaving in their overall life. It includes tourism as well. The emphasis of the word ‘upstream’ is indeed very important considering the impact of tourism is very large and the impact is tremendous. It can transform everything if the thoughts and reason in the ‘upstream’ are not properly controlled and directed. What will be the case if the culture is no longer becoming the ‘upstream’ of Bali tourism? The indications are visible and getting clearer. There is a shift in perspective, attitude, character and others from the Balinese people in considering everything around it. Moreover, a friend in the discussion mentioned that Balinese people are in a ‘comfort zone’ because they are too permissive towards the changes considered to be profitable. On the one hand, it may just happen for a moment and someday it will become boomerang. Characteristics of Balinese people lie in their mind. It can be found in their ‘upstream.’ From here, various attitudes and actions emerge. It is just like an ‘upstream’ of the spring or river. Probably, the water flow in the mountains will be clear, but when approaching people’s settlement area the water quality will decrease. It is no longer clear but has become turbid and may become dangerous when consumed. Culture is the ‘upstream’ of Balinese life. The culture inspired by Hinduism should be properly preserved and maintained. B N

The second ‘Development, Dissemination, Implementation and Supervision of Green Hotel Standardization’ information session was opened by Acting Head of the Denpasar Tourism Office, A.A. Bagus Sudharsana, on Thursday (Jul. 20) in the Sewaka Dharma Building, Lumintang. The Green Hotel team of Bali Travel News (BTN) introduced speakers A.A. Green Hotel Team, Gde Palgunadi hosted the event that was attended by approximately 60 hoteliers and managers of star and non-star hotels in the City of Denpasar. Bagus Sudharsana said that a team from the Ministry of Tourism had recently evaluated the ‘Green Hotel’ criteria of 6 hotels, in cooperation with a climate change team from overseas. “The assessment includes environmental management including waste management. For example processing cooking oil into bio-diesel”, he said. These information sessions continued Sudharsana, are aimed at raising awareness and providing knowledge to hotels in Denpasar about how to realize sustainable tourism as well as to encouraging hoteliers and their employees to become committed to participating in the concept of ‘Green Hotels’. “This event is to help improve the operational quality of hotel services by paying attention to the environment, culture and local communities”, he said. Gde Palgunadi explained that the six-member Green Hotel team was formed by the head of the Denpasar Tourism Office based on the mandate of the mayor of Denpasar to disseminate information about ‘green hotels’. BTN was selected as a partner so as to achieve the target more quickly. “In 2016, the membership participation was quite high. Of the 60 hotels that signed on, 89 percent have followed through quite well”, he said. The Green Hotel team not only assesses hotels but also educates

of contributing to improving and maintaining a sustainable environment. ttraction in the form of waterfall in Buleleng is not only Sekumpul in Sawan subdistrict and Aling-aling at Sambangan village (Sukasada). However, there is also Jembong waterfall located at Ambengan village, Sukasada. This nature tourism is worth including in your itinerary. When driving from Bedugul or from Singaraja town, it is not difficult to get to this tourist attraction. At each intersection, there has been a signboard. When traveling, tiredness will also be slightly felt. The location can be reached by motorcycle by crossing a concrete path of 2.5 meters wide. It is not too far. Nature’s conditions are still beautiful, giving a very cool air sensation. It is away from hustles and bustles so the atmosphere is quite tranquil. When arriving at parking lot, you do not have to be confused how much to pay the ticket. Simply make a voluntary donation. To reach the waterfall, you need to walk about 25 meters long. At that time, your eyes are also served with beautiful scenery. Verdant trees perfectly blend with beautiful and colorful ornamental plants. Besides, there are also three large pools with very clear water. A pool has a depth of 110 cm for adults, while two other pools for children respectively have a depth of 80 cm and 60 cm. Its water comes from waterfall. How fascinating sight it is! Thus, it is worth for taking selfie. From this fresh-water pond, visitors can directly see beautiful waterfall as high as 20 meters. When approached, the eyes will be stunned and amazed by the swift flow of water like frothy, chicly merged with black stones. It is very exotic to make a photo background. The waterfall managed by the local Banten Sari tourism awareness group (Pokdarwis) is also very unique. To reach it, visitors must go up. In contrast to the waterfall in general, it is perched in a valley flanked by hills. It has to be reached by walking downhill. Chief of Pokdarwis, Made Suneka, 40, said the attraction was officially opened in 2013. Daily tourist visits lie in the range of 300 to 500 people. It is not only domestic, but also foreign tourist. “Admission ticket to the waterfall is voluntary, while the ticket for bathing to the swimming pool is IDR 5,000 (adult) and IDR 3,000 (child),” he said recently. In order to boost the tourist visit, the arrangement will continue. It is done independently by the community. “After the presence of this object, some residents can also do selling,” he added. Seeing a myriad of uniqueness, this object can be put into your itinerary when setting foot in North Bali. BTN

To select the works, the exhibition appoints two curators namely Prof. Dr. I Made Bandem and Prof. Dr. I Wayan Dibia. The exhibition was opened by the Head of the Gianyar Culture Agency, I Gusti Ngurah Wijana, on Sunday (Aug. 6). Opening session of the exhibition was jazzed up with a dance performance entitled Barong Api telling the story about Cokorda Agung Api, the pioneer of Singapadu Mask inspired by the sparkle of sunlight. Performance of the dance for about 12 minutes drew the amazement of spectators thronging the stage. The retrospective mask exhibition is the second time. The idea originated from the desire of a

number of Singapadu artists coalesced into the Singapadu Artist Association to preserve the art of ancestral heritage in the form of mask art. “The Singapadu Artist Association together with the village leaders then agreed to hold the exhibition,” said the artist Made Supena, as representative of the association. This exhibition, explained Supena, serves as a retrospective effort that becomes reflective by itself. Singapadu village is a village famous for its performing arts, but the existence of the mask art is much older at Singapadu. “With this mask exhibition, we will see the creativity of the artists in the early days to the present. Through this mask exhibition, the artists can build and construct the mask art further. Mask is a cultural asset of Singapadu village that we strive to remain the identity of Singapadu,”

recently placed as runner-up in the final of the International Society of Bassists Jazz Bass Competition and the Thelonious Monk Institute’s International Jazz Bass Competition. Appearance of Gerald Clayton Trio is getting more solid with the presence of Gregory Hutchinson, a modern jazz drummer. According to Martin Kunzler, his drumming is very alive and different, reminding people of Roy Haynes and Philly Joe Jones. According to Jazz

Kutuh as Role Model of Village Potential Development in Badung fter stipulated as a role model of village development in Badung, Kutuh village is proposed to be an independent village development pilot project in Indonesia by Commission V of Central House of Representatives. On the assessment, Deputy Regent of Badung, Ketut Suiasa, who welcomed the entourage in the Hall of Kutuh village office admitted to appreciate and welcome the intention. Recognition to Kutuh village was also explained that it is in accordance with the spirit of President Joko Widodo who builds Indonesia from the periphery. Pursuant to it, the Badung district embodies it with village development. With the recognition of the Central House of Representatives, it means there is a political recognition to the policy in Badung district that makes Kutuh into a role model of village development in Badung. It makes him confident that what he thinks and the policies taken in the future to make Kutuh into a role model are good and correct. He realized it is not easy thing to reach the goal. To achieve, it does not only rely

on fiscal ability, but Kutuh must also be able to utilize and manage its finance in well-directed, measurable, targeted and appropriate manner. So, there will be something coherent and parallel between the potential and fiscal with the level of people’s welfare. Meanwhile, Deputy Chairman of Commission V of the Central House of Representatives, Lasarus, explained that his visit to Kutuh is made after getting information from the ministry of village development of disadvantaged and transmigration area, directorate general of community empowerment and appropriate technology, that there is a village in Badung district having become an independent village namely Kutuh village. The most important thing he saw in the working visit is how customary structures results in a very high level of participation in the community. The main factor is the location does not have fertile land or belongs to critical one, but the people can live prosperously because of its tourism potential. He hoped that customary structure at Kutuh is really maintained, mainly from the

This restaurant is located on Jalan Gunung Sari, Gang Uma Sekembang, Peliatan, Ubud - Gianyar. Pemulan Coffee House & Resto as a place to eat and drink coffee is very fantastic. It offers a wonderful natural view. Being in a verdant paddy field, rich in local plants, close to the life of the wetland animals and the activities of village community makes the atmosphere comfortable and cool. The decor and interior arranged in original and antic style very much supports the

Similarly, it is equipped with a meeting room, a reception and a room for birthday celebration or just chat. From about 20 menus available, barbeque pork ribs, bebek judes, steamed chicken (betutu) and bebek mekepu is the mostly ordered. “Other than offering good taste, the price is also affordable that can be reached by various circles, including local communities,” added Putu Suryawan accompanied by Operations Manager I Made Wiranata and Sales Marketing Lidya Minanti. The bebek mekepu menu has a superior taste, so that it distinguishes from other duck menus. It has a specialty in black color. It does not happen due to being burned but due to the influence of spices in use. The meat feels soft and tender because the marinade entirely seeps into the flesh. When served, it comes with three kinds of condiment namely green condiment, fried shallot and pounded condiment, so there is a choice of flavor. “I designed this menu inspired by the menu encountered in one of the ceremonies in Bali,” he said. The duck meat does not feel fishy because it has passed through a long process, starting from the provision of spices and then massaged to make the seasoning get absorbed well. After that, it is silenced. Few minutes later, it is boiled about for half a day and then fried until getting crispy. Other than coming with three types of spices, the presentation of this bebek mekepu is also served with rice, plecing kangkung, sate lilit and ares bebek. “Although the process is long, it can

ining in at a restaurant is a commonplace and so is working tasks in office. However, what about working an office job in a restaurant? Or having meals in restaurant while completing office job? Well, this is unusual thing, but, it does exist. The Pemulan Coffee House & Resto provides dining facilities while working. The decor and interior arranged in original and antic style very much supports the

atmosphere in the countryside. Nevertheless, the facilities are very complete, so that guests can eat in tatami style or lesehan, together with girlfriends, family, entourage or colleagues. Similarly, it is equipped with a meeting room, a reception and a room for birthday celebration or just chat. There is also a coffee house, power king space and pool. “This place is also equipped with free Wi-Fi facilities with so fast access so that customers can eat while working,” said the owner, Putu Suryawan. Pemulan Coffee House & Resto offers a variety of delicious foods. In the process of this rebranding, all the menus are arranged, so they become more attractive and de-

licious.

Although using ingredient of red chicken, the meat is soft to the bone. The meat texture is soft and not hard if chewed. A portion of betutu ayam keren is served with urap vegetable, plecing kangkung, rice, raw condiment as well as fried shallot and served by using bamboo tray. The drink on offer is not less interesting like tropical juice, cocktail, mocktail and original coffee of Kintamani. This restaurant is open every day starting at 09:00 until 21:00. B N (BTN/015)

here are so many ways to the gratitude for Indonesian, and one of it is by making Nasi Tumpeng. Therefore, to commemorate the Independence Day of Indonesia, Aston Denpasar Hotel & Convention Center offers the Indonesian traditional food “Tumpeng Merah Putih”. In general, tumpeng made from yellow rice, but at the moment, our Executive Chef Kom-

Denpasar Govt informs 60 hoteliers about the Green Hotel program DENPASAR In the City

n order to encourage the implementation of sustainable tourism, the Municipality of Denpasar’s tourism office, in cooperation with Bali Travel News (Bali Post Media Group) held an information session for hoteliers about the Green Hotel program. Gede Raka Dalem, Dr. Putu Rumawan Salain and Dr. I Ketut Sumadi as well as accompanied by Prof. A.A. Ayu Oka Saraswati. Chariman of the

The Green Hotel team not only assesses hotels but also educates

and assists hoteliers in becoming more ‘green’. The team also involves the Municipality of Denpasar’s licensing bureau so that solutions can be communicated in the case of obstacles when requesting permits. Prof. Rumawan said that the implementation of the concept of Green Hotels is not just for the City of Denpasar but for the whole

world. In the face of climate change, the role of hotels is an important one when it comes to saving energy, water, managing waste and landscapes as well as creating comfort for guests. A.A. Raka Dalem invited all the Green Hotel participants to focus more health of the maintaining the social and natural environment. Implementing the Green Hotel concepts he said is a way

of contributing to improving and maintaining a sustainable environment. On the same occasion, Sumadi conveyed that the Green Hotel program is in accordance with the vision of Denpasar as a culture-based city. The Green Hotel program is also based on the philosophy, customs and ethics of Balinese traditions and culture. BTN

ttraction in the form of waterfall in Buleleng is not only Sekumpul in Sawan subdistrict and Aling-aling at Sambangan village (Sukasada). BTN

A Retrospective Mask Exhibition place for seven days (Aug. 7-13) at Bentara Budaya Bali, Ketewel, Sukawati, Gianyar. The exhibition involving 68 mask artists from Singapadu features 164 masterpieces.

With the nickname of Gianyar as the Heritage City, Regent Agung Bharata hoped this mask exhibition will be able to answer the world challenge in the field of cultural development and preservation, especially the mask carving art in Gianyar district. BTN

Ubud Village Jazz Festival at ARMA Museum T

he Ubud Village Jazz Festival (UVJF) takes place at ARMA Museum on August 11-12, 2017. This local communitybased international jazz festival started from the beginning until mid-August. tive and eclectic lineup that unites musicians from a variety of types of mainstream, modern, traditional and Latin music. Highlights of this year’s festival are talented young musicians, Gerald Clayton Trio, that will make performance with Joe Sanders (bassist) and Gregory Hutchinson (drummer). Gerald has been nominated four times by the prestigious Grammy Award. Clayton, who won second place at the Thelonious Monk Institute Jazz Piano Competition 2006, also earned a Grammy nomination in 2010 for Best Improvised Jazz Solo for Cole Porter’s ‘All of You’ arrangement.

In the meantime, in the ‘Battle Circle,’ his composition with The Clayton Brothers, received a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Composition 2011. He also received Grammy nomination in 2012 and 2013 for the Best Jazz Instrumental Album for Bond: The Paris Session (Concord) and Life Forum (Concord), the second and third albums. No doubt, Joe Sanders is one of the most wanted young bass players of his generation. He was

recently placed as runner-up in the final of the International Society of Bassists Jazz Bass Competition and the Thelonious Monk Institute’s International Jazz Bass Competition. Appearance of Gerald Clayton Trio is getting more solid with the presence of Gregory Hutchinson, a modern jazz drummer. According to Martin Kunzler, his drumming is very alive and different, reminding people of Roy Haynes and Philly Joe Jones. According to Jazz

Magazine, he is ‘the drummer of his generation.’ In addition to quality music concert, the venue will be transformed by the UVJF creative team from Archimetriz Design into a ‘rural’ atmosphere with a variety of outlets selling food, beverages and exhibitions of the local SME products built by the ministry of cooperatives of the Republic of Indonesia as a form of its support for UVJF.

My Lovely Bali

More travelers in need of peace will enjoy natural atmosphere as well as stay in the Canggu area. Talking about coastal tourist attraction in Bali seems never-ending. Although the island is fairly small, it has numerous hidden pearls. Berawa Beach, for instance, located in the same coastline as Petitenget, Batubelig and Canggu, is located at Berawa hamlet, Canggu. Local high waves become an attractive place for surfers. It can be taken approximately 20 minutes by car or motorcycle from Kuta and turn left on the road section to Tanah Lot. Road access to Berawa Beach can pass through Batubelig, but, and the best is through the access adjacent to the Villa Legong Keraton precisely located on the Berawa Beach. nimal flesh is often used to fill in oblations such in the tebasan and peras oblations.

(BTN/was)

Be sensitive with your camera and flash, and respect the religious nature of the occasion. Women who are menstruating are not allowed to enter temples. This is not necessarily a sign of gender discrimination, but a general prohibition against blood on holy ground. (BTN/015)

Indeed, in addition to Suastini, there are many other people who make the reta cake.
