Hundreds of Roasted Suckling Pigs Offered in Usaba Dalem he annual usaba dalem is always welcomed happily by the people of Timbrah customary village, Pertima, Karangasem. Implementation of the ritual at this ancient village is far different from the usaba dalem at other villages in Bali as seen on Sunday (Feb. 26). In the event, people offered hundreds of oblations equipped with roasted suckling pigs at the local dalem temple. The hereditary tradition becomes unique scenery that can only be seen once a year at the dalem temple of Timbrah customary village. Local people welcomed the tradition moment with joy on day before the usaba. Almost every corner of the field at the village looks busy with activities of preparing the roasted suckling pig. Besides, smoke is billowing in every corner of the village, house and highway. Many people prepare their roasted suckling pig the day before because on the usaba day the four hamlets at local village are also busy with devotional works or ngayah pursuant to the task of every hamlet. A community leader, Nengah Supartha, said that the roasted suckling pig is the primary means of offering of each family in the usaba dalem. There are a total of 840 families at the village. It means there are some 840 roasted suckling pigs. It does not include the residents having married to outside the village and the residents of other villages that will also offer roasted suckling pig. It is then offered to the deity abiding at dalem temple. Thus, the dalem temple located about 500 meters from the village center is filled with hundreds of roasted suckling pigs. “The enthusiasm of our society is quite high. Both local residents and those living in diaspora will definitely come home. Moreover, there are residents presenting more than one roasted suckling pig,” said Supartha. He asserted that the offerings with roasted suckling pig are an expression of gratitude of residents to God after obtaining sufficient sustenance having worked hard for a year. The offering of roasted suckling pig is also an expression of Timbrah society for the prosperity after getting abundant crops where the majority of the people are farmers. “Indirectly, this tradition also makes our society encouraged to work diligently. By that way, they can offer roasted suckling pig together in the next usaba,” said the former chief of Timbrah customary village.

The tradition of offering roasted suckling pig at this ancient village is also loaded with philosophy of togetherness. Families that do not offer roasted suckling pig for some reasons (nyebel) or due to economic difficulties will get gift of the post-offering. Supartha asserted that it also represents emotional bond among families having been maintained through generations at the village. “Those preparing no roasted suckling pig are visible from the front of their house compound having no mesahagan. This information will quickly spread by word of mouth. So, sometimes they can even have more post-offering roasted suckling pig than the residents that offer due to receive many gifts,” he said. The adequately high harmony among the family heads at Timbrah customary village is very well preserved until now. On the other hand, the people who receive the gifts due to economic reasons will then be motivated to work hard because they sometimes feel embarrassed. However, according to Supartha, it is positive to motivate people to work and to be responsible for their family. As a result, in the following year they can offer roasted suckling pig with other residents at dalem temple and no longer receive such gift. This year, the implementation of usaba dalem looks more orderly. This happens because the apparatus of Timbrah customary village has appealed to residents not to drive a motorcycle or a car when saying prayers to dalem temple. As a result, all the residents go to dalem temple on foot. As planned, this will be applied every usaba dalem to avoid crowdedness while at dalem temple or when returning home and carrying the offerings with the roasted suckling pig. B N (BTN/kmb)

In the same occasion, Regent Eka expressed her appreciation to the performance and dedication of all the operations management of the Tanah Lot and the employees. ach property either restaurant or hotel certainly has one or two foods or drinks becoming the leading menus. These are also owned by the hotel located on Jalan Sunset Road, namely Fame Hotel Sunset Road, Kuta – Bali, making Oxtail Soup and burger as the menus appropriately referred to as The Queen and The King. It is named so because the taste of this oxtail delicacy is very rich in spices completed

According to her, it should be made proud of, where other regions probably do not have such a heritage like the Tanah Lot. In terms of tourist arrivals, minister of tourism targeted eight million travelers will come to Bali. “Of the target, four million will be from Tabanan,” she said. This shows that Tabanan still has a magnet drawing the interest of travelers and must be thanked. “Without target, we have actually surpassed the target. As religious people, we should be grateful to have something that is not owned by other regions,” added Regent Eka. The regent who had just received a Harmony Award also added that the beauty of Tanah Lot has become attraction to travelers so as to keep coming. “I also often ask people who come to Tanah Lot. ukit Sari Sangeh attraction is virtually never quite from pre-wedding shoots. This cultural activity in combination with technology is always held every day. On Sunday (Mar. 5), for instance, the pre-wedding shoots were made for 10 couples. “Tomorrow and the next day, there are reservations of photographers to make photo shoots,” said Operations Manager of Sangeh Attraction, I Made Sumohon. A total of ten couples will bring along their own photographers and makeup artists. They choose the location in accordance with the direction of their photographer. Though all locations can be used as a pre-wedding photo background, the photographers usually choose four places having become favorites. Like making a movie, they also come with director of photography that will direct their poses. Photographers or directors of photography commonly have prepared the scene in particular composition adjusted to its location. Photographers often wait for the right time to get a silhouette or sunlight penetrating through the trees. “Silhouette view is the most sought after by photographers. There are also photographers taking advantage of large wood and dried leaves under the forest,” said Sumohon. Sumohon said there are also a prewedding photo shoot on the following day. Auspicious day according to Hinduism for Balinese wedding ceremony makes Sangeh crowded with pre-wedding photo shoots. Moreover, Chinese travelers also make Sangeh as regular venue for their photo session. According to him, there are four places becoming favorites namely the front entrance gates to the woods is commonly used as the background. The gates are unique and old where behind it sits a temple and green forests. Secondly, front side of Bukit Sari Temple is also chosen as having cool atmosphere with temple background accompanied with lush and beautiful forests. The forest located in the left side of the temple is also good for photo shooting. Other than filled with large trees, the location also looks like a circle and having no small plants. There are only dried leaves of nutmeg tree. “It is said that this area was a graveyard of monkeys. Nevertheless, we never see any monkey’s corpse here,” he explained.

Another interesting location is under the banyan tree in the west forest. There grow two large banyan trees exuding positive aura. “In general, the photographers are very satisfied with the existing locations. The pre-wedding photo shoot is usually charged at IDR 200,000 for sanitation levies,” he concluded. (BTN/015)

Tanah Lot? They reply to have come for six times. This means that travelers do not get bored to come here even though having made a visit for many times,” she said proudly. In a series of this event, the management submitted revenue sharing for the operations of Tanah Lot to the government of Tabanan, Tanah Lot Temple, related temples in the area of Tanah Lot attraction and the 23 customary villages across Kediri subdistrict.

Regent Eka hoped this assistance will be helpful and useful especially for the preservation of customs, culture as well as the environmental protection with the concept of balance. “Hopefully, Tanah Lot could be better in the future. Now, it has been beautifully arranged and the arrangement will continue. Thus, we have to arrange the area orderly because this also belongs to a sacred area, so that it should be carried out properly in accordance with the norms and regulations,” she added. (BTN/kmb)

Ancient Wayang Wong at Kubu Village

arangasem culture office is trying to encourage residents of Kubu customary village to maintain the regeneration of this art in order to remain sustainable. Head of the Karangasem Culture Agency, Putu Arnawa, said the reconstruction process was carried out and ran quite well last year. As a result, the potential of sacred (wali) dance that was made very sacred by local communities can now be reconstructed with the involvement of ISI Denpasar. To

preserve it well, the regeneration process must be going on pretty well. Moreover, the potential of this sacred art was almost extinct due to the difficulty of carrying out the regeneration of the dancers. “To ensure this regeneration process goes well, we have emphasized on customary villages to aggressively disseminate the program to children,” asked Arnawa. Customary village, said Arnawa, currently has committed to providing coaching by degrees. Local government will also continue to monitor the coaching after pains-

Regent of Tabanan Achieves ‘Harmony Award’ s an appreciation of the ministry of religious affairs to the quality strengthening of interfaith harmony in Tabanan, it presented Harmony Award to the Regent of Tabanan, Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti. It was given directly amid the opening of the National Working Meeting of the Ministry of Religious Affairs 2017 held at Hotel Mercure Ancol on Sunday (Feb. 26). The meeting was attended by all echelons I and II of the ministry of religious affairs, leadership of religious university all over Indonesia, leadership of Commission VIII of the House of Representatives, the head of the regional religious affairs throughout Indonesia and several other heads of the regions. Minister for Religious Affairs, Lukman Hakim Saifuddin, said that the award was given to the regional leader because she has been considered to have contributed outstanding and best services to religious harmony. “Other than in the achievement of the ministry of religious affairs last year, it also includes the development and implementation of the mission of the ministry of religious affairs in maintaining religious life,” said Lukman. Harmony Award is an appreciation and recognition of the ministry of religious affairs for the contributions and initiation of various parties considered to have been successful in maintaining and facilitating the activities of religious communities. The assessment is carried out by the research and development agency of the ministry of religious affairs with reference to various aspects, including the aspects of budgetary support and policy support by the local government. Regent of Tabanan, Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, after receiving the award said that she was very thankful if assessed to have been successful in maintaining religious harmony in Tabanan. “I am here to represent all the people of Tabanan and very grateful for this award. This means that we managed to provide a positive aura for religious harmony, where harmony is the key to achieve success in development,” said Regent Eka. Regent Eka has strong confidence that the presence of harmony, mutual love, peace and mutual support will help achieve together the vision and mission of the program heading for a better life. “In Tabanan, we always maintain harmony by staying in touch, maintaining peace and discussing all the problems. With the communication and good relationship, we will find together the solution to every problem. So, there are no problems that enlarge and finally disrupt the harmony,” continued Eka. With the award, she admitted to be proud of the people of Tabanan because they really understand about the purpose and meaning of the harmony itself. “We may not distinguish ourselves just due to practicing different religion. Conversely, the differences should be seen as a beautiful thing. Do not just see the difference, but see also the similarities because if only emphasizes on differences, there will never be harmony,” she said. “Today, I see that religion is often used as a means and politicized. I’ve never received such a thing in Tabanan because we should keep the religion like what we do to culture. Do not let the difference make us apart,” he said. other accessories. Conditions of the masks and other equipment are very alarming. Since the wayang wong has no longer been performed, a number of masks are found unkempt and almost destroyed. Luckily, during the reconstruction process, these historical objects can still be repaired and saved. At that time, the culture and tourism agency along with the ISI Denpasar began by discovering back the storyline and puppet characters commonly used as the basis of the wayang wong storyline there. Ultimately, it obtained some storylines such as the “Kumbakarna Seized” or the “Death of Kumbakarna.” Based on the storylines, the ISI Denpasar drafted the storyline, adjusted the characters and created the dance movement. It is a part of our duty, both as discovery, preservation and development. Local people are very excited to welcome the reconstruction process of the wayang wong. Since long time ago, people have wanted the regeneration that could revive and resume the artistic heritage of the sacred dance tradition to support a variety of sacred rituals at local village. “At that time, our officers must be willing to wait for them till evening. Local people could only perform the exercise at night because they are busy at work from morning till evening,” he said.

In the past, wayang wong dance was often performed as a sacred dance to support various rituals at Ban village such as at Puseh Temple or other temples at local village. Regeneration is hard to do because most of local younger generations work in diaspora or outside the village. Especially in Karangasem, a number of villages in other subdistricts are still working to preserve the wayang wong. They include Wates village in Selat subdistrict, Selumbung village (Manggis) as well as Pempatan village (Rendang). Their masks and other equipment are still stored and well maintained. Moreover, the wayang wong in Selat subdistrict has often represented Karangasem to the Bali Arts Festival. (BTN/kmb)

that people can directly benefit from the importance of measure compliance in the measurement. Formation of the market measure compliance and regional measure compliance becomes an effort to improve the image of traditional market that is now unable to compete against modern market. In addition to the lack of understanding on market management and the users or owners of measuring instruments, weigh and its equipment (UTTP), the importance of using it is good and correct to avoid cheating in commercial transactions because it will trigger the loss of local economic growth. Traffic Arrangement in Kuta Must Complete This March

BTN/bud

raffic issues are complicated in the context of tourism in Bali, especially Badung. Related to this issue, Regent of Badung, Nyoman Giri Prasta, asked the technical team of the Badung administration to collaborate with a team of Kuta customary village to discuss about the traffic engineering in Kuta. He targeted the traffic arrangement in Kuta area should have been resolved this March. The final traffic concept is a fusion of concept of the transportation agency with the team and the proposals of customary village having been outlined to him in the meeting room of Kuta subdistrict office on Sunday (Feb. 26). The meeting was attended by Chief of Denpasar Police Traffic Affairs, Heri Supriawan, and Chief of Kuta Police, Wayan Sumara. “We will combine the concept of customary village and the concept of our technical team in the Badung district administration. After that, we will make communication and coordination with police authority regarding the traffic engineering later,” said the Regent of Badung, Nyoman Giri Prasta, accompanied by two legislators of the Badung House of Representatives from the Kuta constituency namely Gusti Anom Gumanti and Ni Luh Gede Sri Mediastuti. He added that finalization of the concept was entrusted to the headman and subdistrict head of Kuta as a facilitator. Unmitigatedly, Giri Prasta even directly ordered the Acting Head of the Badung Transportation Agency, Wayan Weda Dharmaja, to make it a priority in

the handling. “At the very least, within next two weeks it should have been final. If necessary, Mr. Weda is no need to come to the office at the Badung civic center. Please be in charge of here (Kuta subdistrict head office—Ed) for a while,” he concluded. On the occasion, Giri Prasta was very confident that the concept will be able resolve the congestion problem often occurred in Kuta area because the concept is a summary of the aspirations of Kuta residents that will be continuously finalized through the efforts of coordination and synergy with various parties. The regent also delivered a number of programs related to the launch of traffic smoothness in Kuta area. It includes the widening plan at Temacun intersection, the road section construction over Tukad Dead and creation of parking spaces in Kuta area. Hopefully, Kuta will not face the same experience as Pattaya that begins to be abandoned by travelers due to severe traffic congestion. Chief of Kuta customary village, Wayan Swarsa, accompanied by the Chief of the community empowerment agency (LPM) Kuta, Gusti Agung Made Agung, who was also present, explained the concept of traffic arrangement made along with a team of Kuta customary village. I.G.A.N Darma Suyasa: o you know why Bali Island becomes unique destination? It happens because the people have a noble personality. Prioritizing the nature of mutual cooperation and kinship, the community on this Island of the Gods is able to maintain the tradition of its ancestors. “Bali becomes special because the people are friendly, honest and having inborn culture,” said Virginie Sandstrom, General Manager of Harris Resort Kuta Beach amid BTN/bud the Aerobic Competition 2017. Unfortunately, added Virginie, only a few Balinese people that have ambition to be a leader or to occupy an important position at workplace. Balinese people having occupied top management at the hotel can be counted on fingers. “I always encourage them (the Balinese of her men) to be a manager. However, many of them do not want to be a manager because they are busy at their home village,” she explained. She always promotes her employees, so as to provide a better life for their family. Besides, the Balinese people can also manage a hotel and get high salary. “I usually encourage by providing them with training and learning continuously. Currently, I’ve managed to drive about seven people to become general manager (GM),” she said. Then, how long have you been a GM? This woman who loves to stay in Bali claimed to have been 16 years as a GM or since she came to Bali in 2001. At first, she was the GM at the Mercure Kuta Beach, Alam Kulkul and Grand Istana Rama. From 2008 she has worked with Harris Kuta Beach. “The key is diligent in exercising to make the body stay in good shape, mind peaceful and comfortable as well as the sleep healthy,” she added. As a key in serving guests, people must stay healthy by exercising. Healthy people will definitely serve guests more patiently, calmly, positively and the body becomes more balanced. “I relieve stress after working by doing exercise. I have to be always healthy so that I can do my hobby in the field of tourism. I love tourism since childhood, so that it must be kept up to feel tired,” she added. (BTN/015)

Competition Getting Fiercer and Crazier ompetition of room rates is worsened lately. To get guests, hotel managements do not hesitate to cut their rates to the lowest point. “Although the tourist arrival does not increase, it’s claimed to have met the target, but the accommodation growth is also high. This needs a special strategy to get guests,” said Corporate General Manager of Avilla Hospitality, IGAN Darma Suyasa. Despite the high demand, the supply is much higher and then what happens is like the current condition in Bali. Darma Suyasa said the uncontrolled growth of accommodation happens due to the emergence of unfair competition. “Inevitably, we must improve the quality to make it competitive. Our property is different and targeted for different market,” he said. In terms of corporation perspective, explained Darma Suyasa, the management of the property in 2016 is challenging. Crazy room rate competition allows guests to choose the best. Other than in terms of room rates, it also has something to do with how to get quality room at appropriate prices. In 2017, he is still optimistic but realistic. “The key is to find our added value, focused target and readiness to change any time. Bali stays excellent. Finding the right market becomes one of the key factors,” he said. According to him, the government factor is also important in overcoming the competition. The government should begin to regulate the accommodation growth in Bali. Aside from South Bali, it must also consider Bali as a whole because each region has its own potential. It will result in even growth and

create a destination in terms of quality, not quantity. “At first, it must be controlled internally, instead of externally. Such internal arrangement of the products is meant to address the external challenges,” he said. The man who is active in the PHRI Badung and IHGMA Committee added that what to do is synergizing with the government that has the authority and other stakeholders. However, the regulations remain in the government with any kinds of legal instruments. (BTN/015)

Badung Boosts European Tourism Market * Starting from Amsterdam, the Netherlands UROPEAN region remains to become a promising tourism market. For this reason, the Regional Tourism Promotion Board (BPPD) of Badung is still boosting this potential market by organizing a series of sales mission starting from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. “The trip of this tourism mission is started here, and then resumed to Paris, Munich and ultimately attending the ITB Berlin in Germany,” said Chief of the BPPD Badung, IGN Ray Suryawijaya, who is currently still in Amsterdam. This event poses the collaboration of the ministry of tourism of Indonesia and the government of Badung. Additionally, this sales mission is supported by Garuda Indonesia, VITO and the Embassy of Indonesia in the Netherlands. The activity in the Netherlands is accompanied by the Indonesian Ambassador, I Gusti Wesaka Puja, and Deputy to Overseas Marketing of the Ministry of Tourism, Prof. I Gede Pitana. Vivacity of prospective travelers in the Netherlands, said Ray Suryawijaya, who is also Chairman of the PHRI Badung, is very high. It is indicated by the very responsive buyers in the Netherlands. Moreover, Indonesia and the Netherlands have very long and strong history. Generally, Rai explained that all the activities of the BPPD along with other

E

participants obtained a positive response. “European market share is very potential for Bali in particular and Indonesia in general,” said Ray. After the table top event at The Grand Sofitel Amsterdam on Thursday (Mar. 1) ended, it was resumed with a special discussion with the ministry of tourism, Ambassador Wesaka Puja, VITO, Garuda Indonesia as well as other participants. It is meant to evaluate and prepared a new strategy in the context of cooperation to build a better future. When talking about numbers, he said, there is an increase of about 22 percent. This means to have surpassed the target. Tourist arrival in 2016 reached 5 million people. Badung district with several potential tourist attractions is surely profited from these facts. “As chairman of the BPPD, I much appreciate to the Regent of Badung, Giri Prasta, for all the dedication and commitment to promote tourism for the benefit of society of Badung and Bali in general,” he said. The promotion carried out in Europe is a clear, measurable and efficient measure. After the series of sales mission to Europe, Ray invited all tourism stakeholders to make synergistic movement and make Bali tourism more advanced. Thus, Bali has higher competitiveness that results in more significant output. (BTN/kmb)

Where to Go....

Admire Spectacular Burst of Waves at Water Blow of Nusa Dua Nusa Dua Beach is one of the resort areas located in the southern part of the Island of Bali and is often used to organize international events such as the APEC Summit and the United Nations Conference so that it is frequently visited by the leaders of various countries. Other than offering the beauty of the beach, Nusa Dua area also hosts many five-star hotels making it a favorite place for those important occasions. Nusa Dua tourist area is nicely organized and gives the impression of luxury. Sanitation and shade trees are well maintained. Virtually every international hotel in the area has a beautiful garden and it can be said that the gardens in Nusa Dua are the most beautiful on the Island of Bali. Nusa Dua Beach has tranquil waves making it safe and suitable for a holiday destination. Sitting back and relaxing on the beach under tropical sun while enjoying beautiful panoramic coastline is certainly very pleasant. With the predicate as the best destination, the coastal area of Nusa Dua has a total of 25 hotels with approximately 4,000 rooms. In Nusa Dua area, guests can choose hotels with facilities

N

according to their taste. If wishing to get luxurious facilities, there are five-star hotels like the Grand Hyatt, St. Regis or Nusa Dua Beach Hotel with varied room rates depending on the type and grade of the hotel room. To find a cheaper hotel, guests can choose the other star-rated hotels around Nusa Dua. Like the hotels, there are also many restaurants in Nusa Dua along the road section heading for Nusa Dua to the lips of its shores. The menus offered are varied, such as Balinese cuisine, European cuisine and Japanese cuisine. When spending holiday to a destination, it seems incomplete without purchasing souvenirs. Well, your favorite souvenirs are widely sold in the local area like at souvenir shops. There, guests can buy a wide range of Balinese accessories such as necklaces, bracelets, glasses, mugs, fans, ashtrays and silver jewelry. Moreover, there are also various T-shirts, beach sarong, shoes, sandals, and fashion with Balinese typical motif. Another interesting object in the coastal area of Nusa Dua is the small island named the Peninsula Island. On this island sits the statue of Rama and Lakshmana with the height of approximately nine meters. Underneath there is a room holding a giant Vedic Scripture with a size of 2 square meters.

Around the statue there are different types of trees planted directly by the ambassadors and the leaders of some countries as a form of friendship with Indonesia. At the eastern end, there is a cluster of volcanic rocks known as the Water Blow. This is one of the famous coastal areas in Nusa Dua. This rock formation is located directly on the seafront so that the pounding waves are booming and making spectacular high bursts. Location of the Water Blow is right behind the Grand Hyatt. To get there, visitors must come into the area of ITDC Nusa Dua. At first when entering the area of Water Blow there are gates of white stone where the name of Water Blow is inscribed on it. Next to the gates, there is a gravestone that reads a warning to visitors in order to be careful all the times. After that, explore the path neatly arranged to the edge of the cliff.

Water Blow is not a beach because it only has the cliff hit by the waves of the Indian Ocean. As being blocked by a steep cliff, the incoming waves powerfully crash on the rocks and are then blown up. If you make a visit in July, August and September, it is the season of the highest waves reaching up to a height of 20 meters. Visitors really admire it, but do not get too close to the edge of the cliff due to frequent accidents.

In the meantime, the beach in the south of Nusa Dua is relatively deserted so that it is preferred by foreign travelers because there are bars with typical lounge chairs put on the beach. As the beach of Bali in general, the beach of Nusa Dua also has good waves for surfing activities and there are many surfboard rental in the area. Location of the best waves is usually on the south side of the beach.

It can be taken approximately 20 minutes by car or motorcycle from Kuta and turn left on the road section to Tanah Lot. Lately, Berawa Beach sufficiently develops because the beach is actually not too far from the glamour of Kuta or Canggu tourist destination earlier known by travelers coming on holidays to Bali. in the Cak Dance presented by the students of SMAN 2 Semarapura is the innovation and modern style. The Cak Dance performance tells about the story of famous King Iswarya and the Empress Ni Diah Tantri. Both kings were eventually killed in a fierce battle. The dance instructor, Wayan Diana, said that the innovative Cak Dance combined with percussion instrument has ever been featured in the performance of Nawanatya Bali Mandara, Denpasar, last year. However, to re-stage he does not require a long time. “For his performance, it takes me only a week to make the preparation,” he said. Meanwhile, the ‘Klungkung Dancing’ program is part of a breakthrough program namely the Gema Santi of Klungkung district. To that end, it must be strong in the face of competition. “To achieve this target, we must be willing to work in accordance with our respective duties,” he said. In the meantime, the Acting Operations Manager, Komang Wijana, said that the theme has tremendous significance. It is a dream after three years of fighting that has not reached the target. “We started from a dream, so that we can measure the strength. At least, we are able to grow our faith in order to compete in the culinary world,” he said. Bale Udang Ubud offers the ambiance in the form of a beau-

Tunas Harapan Jaya School Sends Teacher to Australia This Year ombination of hard work, integrity, commitment and sincere intention causes the achievement to be within easy reach. After 2015, Principal of the SMP Tunas Harapan Jaya (THJ) junior high school, Putu Dewi Saraswati, signed a sister school agreement with Coffs Harbor Christian Community School in Sydney, Australia, the cooperation is continued in 2017. THJ will send a teacher for the orientation during 1-2 years in Sydney. “This is the realization of cooperation established last year,” explained the Trustee of the El Samaritan Foundation Dr. John Ketut Pantja. The teacher to be sent is Made Ray Justin Anastasius, the son of the couple Reverend Ketut Sudiana with Dewi Saraswati. This teacher is a graduate of Biological Sciences of the Sanatana Dharma University, Yogyakarta. According to John Pantja, this proves the role of all parties at school and the foundation having worked hard to provide the best for the advancement of school. Surely, this can also become a reference for parents to choose quality schools for their children in the future. Achievement of the SMP Tunas Harapan Jaya (THJ) in the academic year 2015/2016 is ranked eighth in the national examination throughout the Bali Province. In the meantime, in the 2016/2017 academic year was ranked seventh in Bali. Of course, these achievements are expected to continuously move to higher level. It is very possible because the solidity of the El Samaritan Foundation, teachers, students and parents has run well. “In addition to solidity and cooperation, the achievement was also begun when hiring teachers namely that of kindergarten, elementary and junior high school. We recruit young teachers of scholar and master degree,” said John Ketut Pantja which is also one of the senior figures of Bali tourism. An intimate relationship and

C

kinship are also established between the teachers, staff and foundation. The slogan ‘Your Every Action Must Be Done with Love’ becomes a single binder of togetherness in grabbing best achievement. Willpower, determination and integrity of the education provider are also accompanied by the provision of facilities for students. There are many positive activities that could be followed by students at this school in accordance with their interests and talents. They can choose extracurricular activities like swimming at private pool, indoor basketball, karate, Balinese dance, drum band, futsal and so forth. “In the brochure of the THJ, we write the school’s tagline ‘Fighting Poverty through Education,”’ said John Ketut Pantja. Originally it was a dream, but with hard work we believe that we can achieve the dream. “Dream, Believe, Achieve,” said Pantja. There are some names that have the competence and dedication in this educational institution. Other than John Ketut Pantja as trustee of the foundation, Elisabeth Pantja Lallo, a former lecturer at Udayana University serves as supervisor, Made Edy Putra Pantja as chairman, graduated from Drexell University of Philadelphia, the USA, who is also Director of PT Tour East Indonesia. In the meantime, principal of the junior high school is occupied by Putu Dewi Saraswati Pantja, principal of kindergarten by Maykel Y. ISI Denpasar Opens Art Postgraduate Program The Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar officially opened a postgraduate program in art studies. It is the only one postgraduate art study in Bali and the third one in Indonesia after the ISI Solo (Surakarta) and ISI Yogyakarta. “ISI Denpasar has received a decree from the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education No.137/KPT/I/2017 on February 8, 2017,” said Rector Prof. Dr. I Gede Arya Sugiartha, recently. ccompanied by Deputy Rector I Prof. Dr. Nyoman Artayasa, Prof. Arya said that his college had been waiting for the decree for two years as passing through long process. Other than accommodating the creation and assessment, the postgraduate program proposed also accommodates presentation of the arts. This aspect distinguishes it from the other art colleges. “In this case, we have unique characteristics,” he said. This will become a great opportunity for the Balinese artist to be fabulous. Despite having the same material, namely the creation and assessment, it begins to give majors when taking the final project,

A

so that it can better accommodate the capability of each candidate. Students having the capability of writing will be given the opportunity to present the works of art based on he arts. Prof. Arya said that the opening of postgraduate program at the ISI Denpasar received positive responses from some circles. The art colleges of other regions such as Padang Panjang, Bandung and the art practitioners at home and overseas gave a good response as well. “The art colleges of other regions would like to send their lectures to ISI Denpasar,” he said. Nevertheless, early registration is scheduled to be held in September 2017 with a target of 10 doctoral

candidates for the first session. “We intentionally limit the candidate in the first session because ISI Denpasar wants to achieve doctoral graduates who actually become a pilot. “Our consideration is that a doctor of the art should have a plan of dissertation and topic as well as we’d like to know their daily life. So, we select them tightly,” he said. The presence of postgraduate program will open the opportunity to the art performers in Bali. It will be supported by approximately 10 teaching professionals in their field who already have works and international journals with Scopus index. Currently, the ISI Denpasar has had six professors and will bring in guest lecturers in accordance with the talent of students. “This program is expected to accelerate the achievement of the vision of the ISI Denpasar to become the leading center for the art campus based on local wisdom and universal vision,” said Prof. Arya. aman Puputan Badung (Badung suicide/war square) is so named in remembrance of the “battle” that took place on September 20th, 1906 between the King of Badung with his Balinese court and the Dutch who were invading their land. The Balinese people, dressed in full regalia walked graceful into the line of

fire of the Dutch army rather than capitulate to the dominating forces. The date of this event is commemorated every year and Taman Puputan Monument has been erected in the northern part of Taman Puputan Badung. Many local people visit this square every afternoon for recreational purposes and every Sunday special activities are organized for children. BTN

This temple belongs to the local subak memebrs of Snagsit Village and is situated in the middle of rice fields. One of the unique features of this temple is the characteristically North Balinese, Buleleng style decorative vine and floral motifs that adorn Beji Temple. Beji Temple is used to venerate Dewi Sri (Goddess Sri) –the goddess associated with agriculture. In fact Dewi Sri is believed to have created rice – the staple food of Bali. The people of Sangsti village commonly refer to this neighbourhood as ‘Subak Temple’ and was was formerly the king of Buleleng’s own area. his extraordinary breakthrough should be resumed from all sides. The marine beauty of West Buleleng and Banyuwedang like Pemuteran is quite mesmerizing. It does not lose competitiveness against that of other regions. This area is not only suitable for diving, but also begins to be eyed for a sea plane tour. Head of the Buleleng Tourism Office, I Nyoman Sutrisna, expressed his desire to implement a sea plane tour having been inspired by a number of tourism stakeholders. It emerged after the trial made some time ago. “When viewed from above, the sea looks very beautiful and so does the West Bali National Park (TNBB),” he said on Thursday (Mar. 2). The breakthrough, he argued, is suitable to be implemented as part of the efforts in increasing the number of tourist visits. It just needs to be supported with licensing, mainly from central government through the ministry of transportation and the management of the West Bali National Park (TNBB). “The aircraft used can also land in the sea. Well, we have recommended completing the licensing from the directorate general of air and sea transportation and so is from the TNBB as well as others,” he said. He mentioned if such tourism can be applied it will not spend much time. “According to information, it only takes 25 minutes from Denpasar. The aircraft is also quite comfortable,” he said. BTN

eriousness of the government of Jembrana to build tourism is not only demonstrated by Bull-racing Center building and revitalizing a number of tourist destinations. However, it is also indicated by the promotion of a number of tourist destinations and cultural attractions in Jembrana. To promote the destination and tourist attraction, Deputy Regent of Jembrana, Made Kembang Hartawan, had an audience with the Association of the Indonesia Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) Bali at the office of ASITA Bali at Renon, Denpasar, on Thursday (Mar. 2). Welcomed by the Chairman of ASITA Bali Ketut Ardana and administrators ASITA Bali, Deputy Regent Kembang was present with the Head of the Jembrana Tourism and Culture Agency, Spokesperson Komang Suparta and Head of Tourism Office Nyoman Wenten. In the hearing, Deputy Regent Kembang presented a number of tourist destinations to ASITA Bali. Some of the destinations include Gilimanuk Bay with Karang Sewu, Jagatnatha Botanical Garden, Intelligent Platform of National Road and a number of other destinations. “Destinations like intelligent platform at Rambutsiwi and Jagatnatha Botanical Garden are still in progress. They are targeted to complete this year,” said Kembang. Other than tourist destinations, he also submitted an annual calendar of cultural attractions including traditional boat race, buffalo race, wetland buffalo race, jegog competition, pigeon race and cultural parade. “A number of tourist attractions are certainly very unique to be visited such as the buffalo race, wetland buffalo race and jegog that cannot even be found in any place in the world. Hopefully, this calendar of event could be sold by ASITA through tour packages that will be able to bring in more travelers to Jembrana and the time will not be shifted. In addition, we ask for suggestions from the ASITA for tourism development in Jembrana,” said Kembang. After the presentation, Ketut Ardana said that the tourism potential owned by Jembrana presented by deputy regent is very interesting. Ardana suggested that local government should immediately make video that promotes the tourist destinations and attractions having been presented. Additionally, Ardana suggested local government to participate in a number of travel fairs like the Bali and Beyond Travel Fair because it will be very effective to promote tourism. He also added that sanitation facilities at tourist destinations such as toilet are also important. “It would be better if the local government could invite us to a number of tourist destinations and cultural attractions, so that the ASITA members reaching 405 companies can provide direct assessment about the tourist destinations which are eligible for sale. If there are destinations worth selling, certainly they would not be difficult to make a package for the promotion. In addition, the fixed calendar of cultural attractions will be certainly helpful,” said Ardana. Deputy Regent Kembang highly appreciated to the suggestions extended by the experienced agencies in the handling of tourism business. “After this meeting, we will invite the ASITA members to Jembrana to see in person a number of tourist destinations. The suggestion on the making of promotional video and sanitation standards will certainly become an input to further make improvement in the future. Of course, the suggestions are very nice and will get a special attention,” he said. On that occasion, the district government also submitted the calendar of activities held in Jembrana that usually draws many visitors in August to the ASITA management. BTN

’10-New Bali’ Needs USD 20 Billion hen wishing to get a big fish, the bait should be big as well. Aside from the bait, patience, diligence and fishing strategies must also be understood. Probably, this analogy is quite appropriate with the context of creating new opportunities in bringing in more travelers. This time, central government aggressively develops the ’10-New Bali.’ While the total investment required reaches USD 20 billion. But within five years, the government is only able to provide 30 percent of it from the state and regional budgets. Currently, the investment of private sector is awaited to realize the development of tourism and supporting infrastructure for the ’10-New Bali.’ “We are sorry to my Bali friends for borrowing the name of Bali. It is easiest to sell Indonesia by using the name of Bali,” said Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, in the press conference of the Regional Investment Forum (RIF) at the BNDCC, Nusa Dua, on Thursday (Feb. 23). According to Arief, of the investment worth USD 20 billion, USD 10 billion or about IDR 100 trillion is allocated for pub-

Different atmosphere can be seen on school holidays, where young people are doing activities on the river. They take photographs in wet condition under the Yeh Santen waterfall and play tubing or just have a shower. “Other than children from Gianyar, there are also many teenagers from Buleleng, Tabanan and Denpasar frequently visiting this location,” he added. Bali Mula Unik is indeed very good to perform outbound, meeting, birthday celebration and other

activities. Students, government agencies and other social organizations also use this location to do their outdoor activities. Moreover, some agencies often choose Bali Mula Unik as their meeting venue. “This venue is supported by some facilities such as parking space, restrooms, restaurants and others,” he said. According to him, this twohectare nature tourism object has begun to be visited by travelers since the beginning of January 2017. lic infrastructure and utilities such as water, telephone and electricity. Then, the remaining IDR 100 trillion is allocated for private amenities such as resorts and hotels. Related to the infrastructure, the government can only provide IDR 30 trillion or 30 percent. Actually, the World Bank has been willing to help but only amounts to USD 200 million or around IDR 2.6 trillion. “Just now there was a question, is it possible for investors to invest in public infrastructure and utilities such as toll roads, seaports and airports? Anyway, it’s okay and must be allowed because we the government have to be very realistic. We are only capable of realizing as much as 30 percent,” he explained. Arief wanted that private sector can be invited to build public infrastructure. His ministry has even submitted to the ministry of transportation and ministry of public works and housing (PUPR) in order to involve private sector in the infrastructure development. It includes in the airport construction in North Bali, where the state-owned enterprises (SOEs) Angkasa Pura 1 is suggested to coop-

erate with investor. “Investors from Canada or the Netherlands are okay, but the spearhead is the SOEs. Mr. Governor if the government and the public have agreed with the proposal of the second airport in Bali, please write a letter to the minister of transportation with the copy to minister of tourism, we will support,” he added. Deputy Governor of Bali, Ketut Sudikerta, said that governor of Bali already sent a letter to the minister of transportation. Currently it just needs to wait for the presentation of the investors to be granted the location permit. He said there are two investors interested in building the airport in North Bali from domestic and foreign company. Domestic investor wants to build an airport on mainland, while the foreign investor wants to build an airport on the sea. “It will be shared with our SOEs,” he said. Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Thomas Lembong, said that tourism is the new spearhead of a government’s effort to increase investment. His board with the ministry of tourism proactively

markets the investment potential in the tourism sector and the supporting infrastructure to more than 400 investors and potential investors attending the RIF. Fifty percent of the participants are foreign investors. “Tourism sector and one thing that is no less important is the supporting infrastructure that will become a priority sector to attract domestic and foreign investors,” he said. According to Thomas, the business opportunities arising from the supporting infrastructure must be optimally utilized by investors. “This sector has very great prospects when viewed the existing data. Investment growth of the sector reaches 18 percent per year,” he explained. Over the past five years, the contribution of tourism sector to total realization of the investments sits at the level of 2.2 percent or IDR 51.2 trillion. Based on the data of BKPM in 2016, the domestic investment in tourism sector reached IDR 2.2 trillion, while foreign investment reached IDR 12.8 trillion, bringing the total investment of IDR 15 trillion in the tourism sector.

BTN

erate with investor.

Despite having the same material, namely the creation and assessment, it begins to give majors when taking the final project,

so that it can better accommodate the capability of each candidate.

Arya. Bale Udang Ubud offers the ambiance in the form of a beau-

tiful surrounding view. It is located above the pool, and beside it sits active paddy fields. Visitors can also play with fish to relieve stress with two packs of free food. “Bale Udang has typical menus of shrimp and carp.

In the meantime, principal of the junior high school is occupied by Putu Dewi Saraswati Pantja, principal of kindergarten by Maykel Y. in the Cak Dance presented by the students of SMAN 2 Semarapura is the innovation and modern style. With this program, the local government seeks to preserve the arts and culture through the art performing held once every month.

Talking about coastal tourist attraction in Bali seems never-ending. Although the island is fairly small, it has numerous hidden pearls. Berawa Beach, for instance, located in the same coastline as Petitenget, Batubelig and Canggu, is located at Berawa hamlet, Canggu. Local high waves become an attractive place for surfers. It can be taken approximately 20 minutes by car or motorcycle from Kuta and turn left on the road section to Tanah Lot. Lately, Berawa Beach sufficiently develops because the beach is actually not too far from the glamour of Kuta or Canggu tourist destination earlier known by travelers coming on holidays to Bali. arangasem culture office is trying to encourage residents of Kubu customary village to maintain the regeneration of this art in order to remain sustainable.

Reconstruction process had been carried out by involving around six dancers and gamelan music instructors. It started by checking various masks and

In addition to the lack of understanding on market management and the users or owners of measuring instruments, weigh and its equipment (UTTP), the importance of using it is good and correct to avoid cheating in commercial transactions because it will trigger the loss of local economic growth. raffic issues are complicated in the context of tourism in Bali, especially Badung.

In essence, the concept does not contain too many changes in traffic direction. The arrangement tends to reduce the number of crossing at intersection. So far, this is the phenomenon considered very influential to the smoothness of traffic in Kuta area. (BTN/kmb)

ukit Sari Sangeh attraction is virtually never quite from pre-wedding shoots.

(BTN/kmb)
