Batu Panes Temple

A Sanctum Where Farmers Plead Prosperity

C3-227

Tabanan Regency retains some unique temple heritages. One of them is the Batu Panes Temple located at Mengesta customary village, Penebel. The temple situated amidst the rice field has some uniqueness compared to other temples. The most bizarre is the entrance to the temple located in the southwest. Reputedly, it is a symbol of prosperity and believed to have a capability of treating various diseases.

nother unique nature is the temple has no compound walls, including the split gates as the main entrance. Even, temple is actually surrounded by a small lake that never dries up all the year round. The lake is overgrown by thousands of beautiful lotuses appearing naturally. It is unknown for sure about the origin of the temple. Based on folklore, the temple has something to do with the Batukaru Temple and the Kingdom of Tabanan. It is functioned as the source of prosperity by farmers. On that account, the venerators of the Batu Panes Temple are all farmers. The Batu Panes Temple is believed as sanctum used to venerate Lord Shiva with his manifestation as Brahma. Therefore, it results in the heat. No wonder, a hot spring is found near the temple and sanctified by local people up to these days. The temple is also made a place to ask for the source of life and cure various diseases. Originally, the temple was a lingam of Lord Shiva inscribed with ancient scripts. Then, it was made a shrine in 1970. At that time, the lingam of Shiva was once read. However, no one could translate them. The temple is equipped with a number of shrines including the Penyacah Temple, Pengungangan Puseh Batuaya Temple with ancient yoni, Batur Sari

Especially in the innermost courtyard lie a number of shrines such as representative shrine of Batukaru Temple, Kerinan, main shrine (Ratu Wayan), Sedahan Temple, representative of Pucak Petali and Ratu Nyoman in the form of Padmasana. Pujawali or anniversary of the Batu Panes Temple falls on Buda (Wednesday) Kliwon Wuku Gumbreg. Uniquely, when it falls on dark moon or full moon, the procession should be filled with pedudusan alit and melasti (purificatory

rite for ritual paraphernalia and effigy) to whitewater of Babahan. This ritual usually falls every 10 times of anniversary. As the temple belonging to subak members (farmers), they routinely present the offering and once a year they present annual oblation or chips. In 2007, a discrepancy occurred where the supporting devotees agreed to hold a customary meeting for changing the position of the entrance into the temple from the southwest to the center. When organizing a meeting in the wantilan hall of the temple, all the customary villagers were in trance and prohibited to move the entrance of the temple. Based on the research on the Ganesh effigy in the Puseh Belulang Temple, the Batu Panes was estimated to originate from 1400 BC. It is based on the materials of the effigy and temple buildings of Puseh Belulang that do not apply multi-tiered meru shrine as commonly found in Bali. “It is only an estimate because there has not been a concrete study,” he said. Other than sanctum, location of the Batu Panes Temple has also become a water attraction. Visitors usually enjoy the hot spring believed to have the efficacy to cure some illnesses. Similarly, location around the temple is also quite beautiful along with the overlay of rice terraces. B N (BTN/kmb)

Taman Mumbul as Spiritual Tourist Attraction in Badung

ealizing Taman Mumbul as a spiritual tourist destination in Badung is a very smart idea. In addition to keeping the village asset, it can also bring in economic benefits for local community. Just imagine, every day there are always guests coming to make a visit. Moreover, they also come on auspicious days, like Kliwon, full moon, new moon and Banyupinaruh. Taman Mumbul is a sacred place sanctified by the Sangeh and surrounding communities. It has a big pond like a lake with clear water. The water sources from 11 major springs and dozens of small springs around the lake. Aside from being functioned as source of clean water for people’s daily life, the lake water is also used to irrigate paddy fields of Subak Sangeh spreading across the area

of 200 hectares. Chief of Sangeh customary village, Ida Bagus Dipayana, said that Taman Mumbul can be divided into three areas, namely the innermost, middle and outermost courtyard. The innermost courtyard hosts several temples such as the Ulunsuwi, Taman Beji, Segara Kelebutan, Ratu Gede, Taman Mumbul, Ratu Niang and Bebaturan to worship wong samar (supernatural beings). “All the temples have their own function, but in essence they are functioned to maintain the nature and safety of Sangeh people,” he said. Ulunsuwi Temple is located in the northern most venerated by members of Subak Sangeh. On particular days, subak members perform a ceremony as an expression of gratitude to God for the graces bestowed. In the southern part sits the Taman Beji Temple with three fountains as destination of melasti (physical and psychical purification) procession. Remaining in the region, there is Segara Kelebutan Temple in the form of three-tiered meru shrine located in the middle of the pond. In the south of the pond precisely under a banyan tree sits the representative temple of Taman Ayun. This temple was established when making the pond that was never finished. Its levees

were always broken. Seeing this condition, the royal figure of Mengwi was invited to come. After that, the levees of the lake became very strong, so that it was then made a shrine to worship the deities of Taman Ayun. Meanwhile, the Ratu Gede Temple is used to venerate the guardian in the psychical ream of the pond. The middle courtyard of the Taman Mumbul Temple is located in the east of the area. This temple is venerated by the Brahmana hamlet. There is also a Pengelukatan Temple marked by eleven fountains. Here, the residents do self-purificatory rite (melukat) physically and psychically accompanied by the presentation of the offerings. Sangeh community believes that Ratu Niang abides at this temple. Then, the southernmost shrine is bebaturan (menhir) used to worship wong samar (supernatural beings). “Therefore, we always urge visitors to always prioritize ethics as the region the Taman Mumbul area is rich in objects and sacred places,” he said. This arrangement, explained I.B. Dipa, is meant to make the place attractive and comfortable to be visited. The arrangement workmanship started in 2016. Thankfully, it can be operated in late 2016. Arrangement of the area was funded by assistance of Badung government and village treasury. “The assistance of Badung government is worth IDR 4 billion and village treasury approximately amounted to IDR 500 million,” he said. Deputy Foreign Tourism Marketing Development, Ministry of Tourism, I Gde Pitana

ourism of Indonesia and Bali in particular face many challenges in 2016 starting from security threats to natural disaster. However behind the challenges, the hard work of the entire tourism components remains to bear sweet fruit. It can be seen from domestic and foreign tourist visit having been on target, even before the yearend of 2016. “Up to November, according to the data of BPS, we’ve got 10.5 million foreign tourists. For Bali, the story is more exciting where the target of 4.5 million in 2016 was already achieved in November 2016,” said Deputy Foreign Tourism Marketing Development, Ministry of Tourism, I Gde Pitana, in an exclusive interview with Indonesia Network, BaliTV and Bali Post in Jakarta, recently. Pitana added that movement of domestic tourists is more remarkable. This is related to economic growth, ease of accessibility,

low-cost carrier (LCC) as well as the security condition that is getting better. In 2016, the movement of domestic tourist reached 262 million in Indonesia. This achievement makes his ministry increasingly challenged in 2017. “2017 is a challenging year for us. Nevertheless, we’ve been getting around this with a variety of strategies including the new ones. The first strategy is utilizing the advances in information technology better known as ‘go digital movement,’” he added. According to Pitana, go digital means a variety of activities both tourism promotions, marketing as well as the form of sales carried out with the approaches through digital platform. For instance, it can be carried out by making cooperation with various search engines in the world. Then, make collaboration with the platforms having become aggregators gathering those that will be traveling such as sea trips and working with Online Travel Agencies (OTA). “Well, there are various activities we do. We use the concept of O to O meaning online to off-line and off-line to online. Thus, we will synergize the go-digital with conventional approaches because somehow we cannot retreat from the activities of going digital,” he explained. Pitana explained this strategy is applied because the world has been in the digital era. Similarly, costumers have been also gone digital. As a marketer, his ministry

must follow consumers because “who wins consumers, wins the game.” Data of the ministry of tourism showed that more than 75 percent of travelers plan their trips through digital media. Thus, going digital is a must. “Starting from the search where to go has been filled with digital promotions. Then, when planning to select, they will also contact digital travel agencies. Then, when looking for airline ticket, for example, they book digitally, or through online. When arriving at the destination, where to eat in Bali, they will check via online first, and so on,” he explained. Nevertheless, added Pitana, tourism is an industry that is not only high-tech but also high touch in need of smiling and greeting. Here, the concept is online goes off-line. The off-line activities undertaken including the participation in overseas travel market like the ITB in Berlin, WTM in London, JATA in Japan, ATM in Arab and so on. His ministry also invites the industry to make direct sales overseas in what the so-called sales mission. “As information for Bali, for instance, on February 17 we’ll invite or cooperate with the BPPD Badung to perform sales mission to two cities in Australia. Then, in March we work together with the BPPD for sales mission to India. And so on, there are a lot of off-line efforts we do in addition to going digital today,” he concluded. (BTN/kmb)

There are interesting stories about this location. It is much believed by local community, whether it is true or not, this is the story developing amid the community. Gianyar Has Another New Tourist Attraction

ianyar district adds another new tourist attraction to its portfolio. The tourist attraction is paddy field nature located at Subak Sukabayu, Gagah hamlet, Tegallalang. Trekking activity in the paddy field area becomes the main attraction, other than farmers’ activity. This new tourist attraction was opened by regent of Gianyar represented by the Head of Gianyar Investment and Integrated Services, I Ketut Mudana, Monday (Jan. 23). The nature tourism spreading across the area of 92 hectares of paddy fields offers an exotic view. If visitors want to enjoy the beauty of terraced paddy fields and farmers’ activity cultivating their fields traditionally, visitors can go down the path along 2.7 km. “The idea to make this paddy field into a tourist attraction already emerged a year ago,” said chief of Subak Sukabayu, I Wayan Sudana. After that, the subak members built infrastructure and supporting facilities such as toilet, concretized walkway passing paddy fields and some other facilities. Eventually this attraction was inaugurated on Monday. This paddy field nature tourism is quite beautiful. View of the paddy field, jogging track, trekking and farmers’ activity make this location appropriate for educational tour. “Visitors will be able to see or learn about Balinese traditional farming attached to local cultural nuances,” he added.

Visitors will be demonstrated with the way how local farmers plant rice, ranging from seedlings, plowing, planting to harvesting crops. “We surely introduce traditional farming and there is no modern touch like the use of hand tractor. Similarly, it is accompanied by religious ceremonies that are always attached to Balinese life,” explained Sudana. As supporting facility of the nature paddy field tourist attraction, the subak has also built a selfie photo platform. The selfie platform is surrounded by a kind of trellis or referred to as the location of the padlock of love. This location targets young couples who are in love-sick so that they can install a padlock as a symbol of eternal bond of their love. “The idea on the padlock of love indeed imitates similar things introduced overseas such as in Paris and South Korea,” he added. Head of the Gianyar Investment and Integrated Services, I Ketut Mudana, said that other than serving as innovative tourist attraction, this idea poses a good measure for conservation or environmental preservation. This measure can also prevent the current waves of land conversion for the sake of economic interests that are irreversible. “Other than becoming famous for its nature tourism, Gagah hamlet will be able to preserve their paddy field areas well,” he said. Indonesia is the world’s largest supplier of geothermal, reaching 40 percent. So far, it is only utilized as much as 4 percent. Financial factor and regulation constraints often cause geothermal operators reluctant to invest in geothermal plant. Therefore, the government is necessary to provide a fiscal incentive for them, including subsidies. The other obstacles are related to regu-

lation conflict, especially about regulation in the field of forestry where geothermal exploration is prohibited in forest areas, especially protected forest. Actually, the geothermal resources only exist in protected forest areas,” said Tulus Abadi. “Supplying cheap and ecofriendly energy is the obligation of the state. Clean energy is becoming very urgent amid the growing shortage of access to fossil energy. Once again, the government should provide incentives for parties concerned and the right on clean energy. All this time, subsidy has been disbursed on fossil energy, especially electricity, fuel and gas. It is ideal if indeed began to be transferred to a clean energy subsidies because clean energy is entitled to get rights for subsidies, instead of fossil fuels,” affirmed Tulus (BTN/014)

I Made Ramia Adnyana, With eveything in order Bali can continue to be a destination for people from around the world. “If sanitation becomes a problem, this has negative impacts on the number of tourits who visit the island”, he said. On that account, this nimble man always invites people in Bali to keep the island clean. Despite being busy managing a hotel in Tuban, Kuta, Adnyana is always concerned about the environment. “We have an ongoing program for the conservation of mangroves in Tuban. Concern for the environment is part of the practices of the conceot of Tri Hita Karana”, he explained. In addition to caring for the preservation of mangroves, he and his friends have also created a movement called No Plastic is Fantastic that seeks to combat the plastic waste problem by involving bith hotels and students. It is not surprising that they received a reward from the Indonesia record achievement media (MPRI). “We also provide training and education to school students around Tuban about how to keep their environment clean”, he explained. According to Adnyana, it is important to have a garbage awarness movement in the area of Tuban as it is the gateway into Bali for many visitors. Tourism busniesses he said have an obligation to maintain this gateway. “So, our role and function are vital in maintaining sanitation in this tourism gateway”, he said. In the near future, Adnyana also plans to gather hoteliers in Tuban together through the Tuban Group to do something positive for the advancement of tourism, so that they can make a greater contribution to tourism in Bali, Badung and Indonesia. It will be clearly seen the view of the eastern, southern and western part of Bali Island. Vehicles passing in Baturiti heading for Singaraja from Denpasar and vice versa are also visible from here. Pucak Tedung has three courtyards. The first is the highest one or the innermost courtyard (jeroan). This area hosts the main buildings. The second one is middle courtyard (jaba tengah) consisting of bale kulkul (wooden split drum tower) and Panggungan pavilion and the lowest is outermost courtyard (jaba sisi). In the

meantime, in the northwest of the Pucak Tedung Temple, there is a small temple called Sekartaji Temple with only two buildings, namely the shrine of Batur Sari and Paruman Pancaresi. Existence of this temple is closely associated with Pucak Tedung. Literally, the Pucak Tedung is derived from two words. In Balinese, pucak means the highest point of plateau, while tedung is a kind of sacred umbrella. So far, the etymology on the name of Pucak Tedung has not been found in any palm-leaf manuscripts or chronicles.

Let’s Make a Visit to Nung Nung Waterfall et bored with the bustling and boisterous atmosphere of the city? For a change, try to make a visit to Nung Nung waterfall. It is situated at Nung Nung village, Petang. The distance is about 45 kilometers north of Denpasar or can be reached by car for about 1.5 hours. To get there, from the city of Denpasar visitors can pass through Jalan Ahmad Yani to the North. Once arriving at Mambal Market, turn left and from the Bukit Sari Sangeh it is about 20 km to go. Then, the journey is resumed to Petang and Pelaga until arrive at Nung Nung village. Nung Nung relying on the natural beauty is situated in North Badung. nature. The journey to the location must pass through a valley, so that it needs to be extra careful when stepping down the steep and slippery stairs. However, each stair has been equipped with handrail to provide an opportunity for breathing and a gazebo to break. During the trip the backdrop is very beautiful because on either side of the stairs visitors can see natural and exotic beauty of mountains. Singing birds seem to give a meaning to every gurgling waterfall. Small animals such as butterflies, dragonflies and others imply that this area is very convenient. It happens because the Nung Nung waterfall has a very different atmosphere compared to other attractions in the area of Petang and Pelaga. Nung Nung waterfall has a unique natural charm. This object is surrounded by flourishing large trees which keep the water on earth. The atmosphere is quite calm and naturally very nice to relieve fatigue after a flurry. Mythologically, it is said that in the past there was a leader of Hinduism named Danghyang Nirartha or Bhatara Sakti Wawu Rawuh made a pilgrimage from Pulaki to eastern part of the Island of Bali. Among his journey, he took a rest on the highest point of a plateau (Balinese people usually call it pucak). When he resumed the journey, his umbrella was left behind on the peak. Hence, the plain is called Pucak Tedung and the temple established is called Pucak Tedung. During the glory of Mengwi kingdom around the seventeenth century whose territory got to the region of North Badung, the supervision or maintenance of Pucak Tedung was submitted to Carangsari Palace. Then, Carangsari Palace handed over the supervision and maintenance to Kerta Palace. In the seventeenth century, Carangsari Palace developed its territory where an offspring named I Gusti Ngurah Rai moved to Petang village and settled there. Since Kerta Palace had no descendant, the supervision and maintenance of Pucak Tedung was then submitted to Petang Palace, denoting a fraction of Carangsari Palace. In the meantime, paraphernalia such as holy bell was still kept in Kerta Palace. In the administration of I Gusti

Everyone who visits the bamboo forest is forbidden to cut down indiscriminately and the cutting is only allowed selectively on specified days. The majority of Balinese people practicing Hinduism considered the bamboo has not been replaced as a means of religious ceremonies. Therefore, every citizen is obliged to obey the rules to preserve the bamboo grove. Location of the bamboo forest is at Kubu village, Bangli County or approximately 5 km from the town of Bangli. From the Denpasar it is about 50 km and can be reached within an hour drive.

Solo together with the city of Yogyakarta are two main royal centers descending from the old Mataram kingdom on Java that built such phenomenal monuments as the Prambanan temple and more. Many of these traditions and teachings are still upheld by the courts and the people to this very day. A visit to Solo is a chance to connect with and take in the sights and sounds of the ancient Javanese culture. From the Solonese dance, wayang puppetry through to meticulously hand-drawn batik, Solo remains a city that prides itself on its artistic traditions of elegance and refinement. Solo can be reached by flights and by rail from Jakarta and Bali. There are also international flights from Singapore direct to Solo. Solo is around 1.5 hours driving east of Yogyakarta. There are plenty of accommodations available, from luxury hotels to homestays. B N (Indonesia.travel)

Let’s Preserve Our Ancestral Heritages Being a Balinese today is really very pleasing and easy. Why? We are only told to maintain and preserve. In the meantime, a wealth of fascinating physical culture aged hundreds of years poses the masterpiece of the ancestors. Our sublime culture is also the work of our ancestors. Unfortunately, Balinese people are incompetent in the matter of preserving and tend to make it degraded. This is a current phenomenon needing to be observed and re-contemplated. We must immediately make introspection. his was confirmed by Vice Chairman of Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) of Bali, Jupiter G. Lalwani, recently. This matter, added Jupiter who is the owner of Palloma Hotel in Kuta and a lawyer, is a common task. It cannot be relied on entirely to one of the agencies. “For instance, it cannot just be relied on government. The government will not be able to do it without the assistance of other components,” said the man who speaks Balinese

very fluently. Currently he sees that Bali tourism such as the hospitality sector is already enough. “Moreover, the room number has been oversupply,” he said. To that end, he hoped the government could be wiser in issuing permits. As an entrepreneur, he quite understood why investors are glancing at South Bali that has already been very well established and complete in terms of facilities and accessibility. Nevertheless, as the management of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he hoped employers to glance at the opportunity for other investments in North, West and East Bali. The problem is that in terms of economical calculations all the investment are focused on Badung, Denpasar, Gianyar and Tabanan. He admitted that seeing

Communication of the company to local people runs very well and shows off mutual understanding. It makes investors not scared and worried about investing due to the issue on ‘village mafia.’ “Existence of open communication has become closer and better. If there are issues, they must be quickly resolved. It is the appreciation of the Green School and gratitude of the management of the Kulkul Foundation,” she said. G

reatness of God can be seen at Taman Beji Manik Karang Temple located at Padangsambian customary village, West Denpasar. The temple built in August 2016 to January 2017 is actually located very far from the sea. But miraculously, there is marine coral here with springs in the vicinity. Other than being used for pengelukatan or purificatory rite, the springs are also believed to cure various diseases. On Soma Kliwon Landep, Monday (Jan. 30) was carried out a series of rituals consisting of Pangruak Karang, Macaru Resi Gana, Mendem Dasar, Pamelaspasan and Mendem Padagingan at the Taman Beji Manik Karang.

The ritual was officiated over by Ida Pedanda Gede Putra Keniten from Griya Tainsiat attended by Mayor of Denpasar I.B. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra. Similarly, the ritual was also coupled with panyepuhan and pawintenan ceremony of the temple priests and pasupati or psychical revivification of the Dalem Sidakarya and Manik Bun masks. Location of the Taman Beji Manik Karang Temple can be said to be hidden because of having to enter the Gang Unta on Jalan Gunung Tangkuban Perahu. The gang or alley which is only wide enough for a motorcycle is located east of Balun hamlet, Padangsambian customary village. At the outermost courtyard sits the representative shrine of Ida Ratu Samar Bagus and Ida Ratu Niang Gobleh. In this area, there are also marine coral (sacred coral) and springs surrounded by precast drain getting to the innermost temple courtyard because the Taman Beji Manik Karang is made at a height of approximately 3.5 meters. When climbing the stairs, pilgrims will encounter the middle temple courtyard accommodating the Penglurah

Agung Tengah shrine, then in the innermost temple courtyard sit the Padmasana shrine, Pengaruman pavilion and Piasan or Pawedan pavilion. “This temple was built due to the discovery of beji or sacred spring that was first discovered from the river. This is a deposit of ancestors and then we regenerate and build it into a temple,” said chairman of ritual committee, I Made Mangku Warjaya. According to Warjaya, all holy water of purificatory rite is taken from the spring at the temple. He mentioned there have been around 100 people getting purification rite at the temple. “There were sick people coming here to beg purificatory rite, and thankfully they got recovery due to His blessings. The temple itself was built on land owned by the family of I Made Candra. Before the temple was built, a variety of problems and disasters continuously afflicted the families that currently become the supporting devotees of the temple. When making a visit to this location, I finally got a revelation to establish a temple so that he could abide here,” he added. I Wayan Sudiana who is the younger brother of I Made Candra acknowledged that many problems have plagued his family before the establishment of the temple. The climax happened when his father died in February 2016. Before that, two elder brothers, including I Made Candra, during their childhood long suffered from disease to almost die.

Bali Starling Population in TNBB Goes Up

Mayor of Denpasar is signing an inscription in the inauguration of the Taman Beji Manik Karang Temple.

Then, they were told by a medium there is a spring at temple location, but no one notices. “Having been cleaned up, my brother recovered. Due to limited funds, we cannot pay attention and establish a shrine. We remain to be hit by disaster until our father died as falling down from picking up flowers,” said the man who is now the temple core priest with I Made Candra at the Taman Beji Manik Karang. According to Sudiana, at the temple location has actually been made shrines in the form of turus lumbung or temporary shrine with living tree pillars. Having made it, at night his mother got revelation through a dream where she was visited by an old man dressed in white. In essence, his parent is forbidden to make shrines. As evident, two weeks later, the shrines were

opulation of Bali starling (Leucopsar rothschildi) in the West Bali National Park (TNBB) Bull-racing Center has currently reached 81 heads. That number has continued to increase within the past five years. Reintroduction of this protected bird is also carried out in some parts of the region in the TNBB, so that the population spreads out. Subdivision Head of TNBB Administrative Affairs, Wiryawan, explained on Wednesday (Feb. 1) that since 2012 the population of Bali starling in TNBB has increased. They are in the Bali starling breeding center (UPKPJB) as well as in the wild of the national park. The number of endemic birds at Tegalbunder breeding center, West Bali, in 2016 reached 197 heads. It shows an increase compared to the beginning of 2012 only reaching 50 heads. Meanwhile, there are 81 heads in the wild of the TNBB region. From the beginning of 2012, there are only 15 heads. According to Wiryawan, there are five sites used to release the birds all this time. They include Labuan Lalang, Tanjung Gelap, Brumbun, Lampu Merah or Segara Rupek and Cekik. Previously, the release was carried out at particular site only. West Bali National Park area now has a dome sanctuary for the Bali starling. Inside the dome designed like its native habitat will be filled with Bali starling so that it can multiply like in the wild. It is functioned as an education that describes the habitat of Bali starling. “Currently, it remains in the process of selecting individual birds and matchmaking, while the dome will be in operation in February,” he explained. Indeed, added Wiryawan, other than the results of bird breeding center in the TNBB, there is an obligation for zoo or individual breeders to return to the results to their habitat. “Until now, there has been no contribution,” said Wiryawan. Actually, individual breeders or zoos should reimburse their breeding results as much as 10 percent of the second offspring. Bali starling is categorized into wildlife endemic bird species that are rarely found and different from any other types. Its presence is only found in the area of West Bali National Park. This bird is selected to become the faunal icon of Bali Province. BTN

Interestingly, added Sudiana, the revelation received by temple priest I Made Warjaya suggested all the supporting devotees (pengempon) to be quiet because the deities at the temple will find the cost of temple construction. Evidently, numerous donors suddenly came from Denpasar, Gianyar, Bangli, Karangasem and Buleleng. One of them is A.A. Ketut Nuraja who becomes the largest donor and is ready to back-up the costs until the temple can be accomplished. In addition, there is also assistance from Taksu Bali Brotherhood. “So, this temple can be built on independent funds,” he said. BTN

Tegaltamu Grand Palace, Bali Cultural Destination in Gianyar GIANYAR

The Center of Art

D

o you still remember Batubulan? The village located in the Sukawati subdistrict, Gianyar, is not only famous for its barong performing art as well as the artisans of sculpture and batik cloth. The village still making preparation to become a tourism village is also famous for royal tourist area. It is the Tegal-

tamu Palace which has become the most visited tourist destination. This palace with beautiful heritage is still well preserved. Tegaltamu Grand Palace is very strategic and close to other destinations, so that it is easily reached. It is situated at Tegaltamu hamlet, Batubulan, or about 10 minutes from Sukawati, 30 minutes from Ubud and Denpasar, and about 1.5 hours from Ngurah Rai Airport by car. Tegaltamu Grand Palace is one of the palaces remaining a descendant of King of Badung I, Kyai Anglurah Tegeh Kori Putu Agung who ruled at Tegal Badung. When there was a civil war at Tegeh Agung Palace (now Griya Jro Agung Tegal at Tegal hamlet, Badung), Kyai Anglurah Putu Agung Tegeh Kori fled to Gianyar area accompanied by 125 loyal followers. At the new location, he then built a palace named the Tegaltamu Palace. The name Tegaltamu was used to indicate the identity that they were ‘guests’ (tamu in Balinese) of Tegal hamlet evacuating to Gianyar. The

name depicts the history of the founder namely guests originating from Tegal Badung. Refugees going to Tegaltamu have profession as merchant. “As refugees, they do not have any land to grow crops, so that the only job that could be done was becoming the dealer of arts,” said I Gusti Ngurah Pertu Agung, a descendant of Tegaltamu Palace. Along with the development of Bali tourism, Tegaltamu Palace has been opened as a culture-based tourist destination since 1998 though it has become a tourist destination since the 1970s. Travelers from various countries come to learn Balinese culture such as dancing, playing gamelan music, preparing oblation and chanting. “Many foreigners are learning to dance, reading literature and making sculptures,” said this alumnus of the Dance Department at the ISI Denpasar. Gung Pertu, as he familiarly addressed, said that travelers knew Tegaltamu Palace as the center of the art and culture from several books. Many of them said the books published in the 1920s write about the uniqueness owned by Bali. They did not only write about local culture inspired by Hinduism, but also the exotic nature of the island. One of them is about I Gusti Ngurah Tegaltamu as a famous baris (warrior) dancer as well as the monumental barong and masks having been well known across Bali. Today, Tegaltamu Grand Palace remaining to preserve Balinese culture becomes a destination visited

Miracle, Marine Coral in Mainland

G

reatness of God can be seen at Taman Beji Manik Karang Temple located at Padangsambian customary village, West Denpasar.

BTN

swept away by floods. “Only a stone like yoni phallus is left,” he added.

For example, there is a contest of mejejahitan (preparing oblation) and writing of Balinese scripts on palm-leaf and wearing customary clothes and Balinese dance costumes properly. There is also lunch and dinner package with international menus served in Balinese style. “Tegaltamu Grand Palace provides tourism services with very strong cultural roots.

From the Denpasar it is about 50 km and can be reached within an hour drive.

of 200 hectares.

(BTN/kmb)

Story on a Water-Selling Grandma t is not difficult to reach this location. Tirta Taman Mumbul Temple is situated around one kilometer from Sangeh tourist attraction. There are interesting stories about this location. It is much believed by local community, whether it is true or not, this is the story developing amid the community. It is said, the spring coming out at this place originates from a water jug belonging to a water-selling grandmother.

“Other than becoming famous for its nature tourism, Gagah hamlet will be able to preserve their paddy field areas well,” he said. waste. It is urgent to help electric energy supply shortages proved to be long and needs high cost for large plants. In fact, there are many sources of clean energy. Therefore, the government should provide coaching and empowerment for people who have the potential to implement clean energy, including in the scale of financing.” “The government through PT Pertamina is also urged to realize geothermal energy.

In this case, people are encouraged to control themselves so that do not be complacent in the enjoyment. How to prepare it? First of all, exfoliate the skin of rambutan and then put into the basin. After that, add some salt, chili and white sugar and stir until blended (can be finely grounded). Add a lemon having been squeezed, so that it will be watery.

The temple is equipped with a number of shrines including the Penyacah Temple, Pengungangan Puseh Batuaya Temple with ancient yoni, Batur Sari

rite for ritual paraphernalia and effigy) to whitewater of Babahan.
