Tanah Lot Becomes a Center for Comparative Study anah Lot tourist attraction is not only interesting to visit, but also exuding fragrance that draws the management of other tourist objects to come and learn. They want to learn more about the management of objects, human resources, arrangement of the region as well as services to domestic and foreign tourists. So, it is natural if Tanah Lot is often selected as the object of comparative study for management of tourist object in Bali or outside the region. For instance, a comparative study was conducted by Uluwatu tourist attraction

The group of nine people learned more about problem solving implemented at the object. “The arrival of the Uluwatu tourist attraction management is to share the management of tourist object, where Uluwatu has similar characteristics to Tanah Lot,” said Operations Manager of Tanah Lot, I Ketut Toya Adnyana. The frequently experienced problems include the handling of complaints, area supporting facilities and the system applied by the management. Tanah Lot itself has established a stand-alone management agency.

The cake in brownish red color looks like a bullet (Batun Bedil) and is a part of the Pitri Yajña ceremony. The tradition remains in practice up to these days. In addition, the cake can also be enjoyed as a snack by farmers on the island. When working on their rice fields by involving many people (through mutual assistance), the cake is served for refreshment. They are accustomed to consume it after the first break or after lunch. He also added that initial discussion about the management of Tanah Lot was the beginning of management under two parties namely the government of Tabanan district and Beraban customary village. There was agreement governing the sharing profit based on percentage for the government of Tabanan district, Beraban customary village, Tanah Lot Temple, and the temples around the area as well as customary villages in Kediri subdistrict. Tanah Lot is indeed the most popular tourist destination in the whole universe. Other than due to the panorama of magnifi-

The management involves two elements (government and customary village) that always make self-improvement and oriented to customers without exploiting cultural values and the natural environment. After sharing the information, the apparatuses of Pecatu customary village made their time to look directly to the field regarding the gate management tickets, checking of tickets to the beach and temple areas. “They hope this information can be made into a reference for improving the management of Uluwatu in the future,” added Toya Adnyana. urfing has really gained popularity in Tanah Lot. As the sun approaches the horizon, you can see line of young Balinese men approaching the beach on their surfboards, controlling them with the same gracefullness as in their traditional dances, mastering the waves and penetrating the tubes. Surfing in Bali is said to have began at some time around 1970 although it is likely a lucky few were surfing the island to there selves some years before then. Bali in many peoples opinion is a surfing theme park with so many different waves on a relatively small island for all abilities and all year round consistency. The most consistent time of the year for decent swell is from July through to October which is the middle of the dry season and also the most popular time to visit the island and therefore the most crowded. Surfing is a surface water sport in which the participant is carried along the face of a breaking wave, most commonly using a surfboard, although wave-riders may make use of kneeboards, body boards (aka boogie boards), kayaks, surf skis, and their own bodies. Surfing-related sports such as paddleboarding and sea kayaking do not require waves, and other derivative sports such as kitesurfing and windsurfing rely primarily on wind for power, yet all of these tools may as well be used to ride waves. Two major subdivisions within contemporary stand-up surfing are reflected by the differences in surfboard design and riding style of longboarding and shortboarding. In tow-in surfing (most often, but not exclusively, associated with big wave surfing), a surfer is towed into the wave by a motorized water vehicle, such as a jetski, generally because standard paddling is often ineffective when trying to match a large wave’s higher speed. Batubolong Coast at Tanah Lot area famous as a place for surfing among in local surfer or international surfer cause height of its wave which is compatible for surfing. Local surfer usually the young man from entire Beraban village and surrounding villages. They usually do not have experience in surfing world before.

it fits perfectly on the tongue. Uniquely, every region in Bali has a method and different recipes in preparing the coconut lawar. Some mix it with pork skin, chicken meat, or chicken lungs and liver. Its main ingredient is young coconut mixed with base genep (Balinese basic spice). It consists of herbs and natural ingredients such as garlic, aromatic ginger, lemongrass, pepper, turmeric, nutmeg and chili. How to prepare it? First of all, finely ground all spices and then fry. To make it more palatable, mix well with sambal embe (fried shallot). Furthermore, the chicken lungs and liver are boiled until cooked. Then, drain and slice them into small pieces. The chicken lung and liver slices were smeared with fried herbs. After that, mix the chicken meat with chopped coconut evenly. Add chili sauce, lime juice and fried shallot to give fresh scent. Ultimately, the coconut lawar is ready to serve.

Tugun Karang, a Psychical Gateway to House Compound

ccording to Balinese people, especially the Hindus, every sacred building or shrine placed in the yard of a house or family temple must be respectively functioned according to its location and name. In addition, the sacred buildings are not only functioned, but also

believed to be the abode of deities, ancestral spirits and other psychical beings. Moreover, the Tugun Karang shrine or often called as Pengijeng Karang is very often associated with the psychical and haunted thing. Tugun Karang comes from the word tuhu meaning ‘to know’ or ‘have knowledge.’ Karang means

‘yard’ or house yard or human body. Who can understand and know about one’s body well, and then he or she is the one who reaches the balance of physical and psychical realm. In the Hindu mysticism and philosophy, Tugun Karang is the ultimate mantra. Tugun is Tang, Ang and Ung; summarized into Karang, namely Ang

and Ah. Ang and Ah are double syllables symbolizing the life and death. Tugun Karang made by the elders of Balinese people is not just a sacred and simple building. It is a sanctified building made and put at a special location through magical and mystical calculation. Thus, the Tugun Karang serves as a pecalang or guardian in a house compound that keeps safety psychically. Each sikut satak of home yard must have two kinds of shrine, namely the Pangulun Karang in the form of kemulan or threechambered shrine and Panunggun Karang functioned as mentioned before. According to I Gusti Ketut Dalem, a permanent lecturer at the Dharma Duta Faculty of the IHDN Denpasar, Tugun Karang shrine is the abode of Ida Ratu Sedahan Panunggun Karang, in charge of security guard in the house compound. “Actually, he has existed before there are people taking advantage of the land area either intended for housing or moors. According

to the elders, they have diverse manifestations according to the place and position. There is manifestation as Jero Dukuh or elder figure, elephant, horse, tiger and other forms,” he said. Many people do not know that Tugun Karang is the gateway of psychical beings coming from psychical world to physical world. Moreover, if a human is willing to enter the psychical dimension must seek permission and pass through this gateway. The deity abiding in the Tungun Karang shrine also plays an important role to protect residents from psychical attacks, such as witch. However, lately many people are ignorant and do not believe in the power of psychical beings in Tugun Karang. The Kala Tattwa palm-leaf manuscript carries that Ida Bhatara Kala changes its form into Sedahan Karang / Sawah / Abian with the function as Pecalang, having the same function as Pangerurah, Penganggit Lawang or Patih in family temple or public temple. Solutions of Bali to Overcome Congestion

here are funny-like jokes related to solutions of traffic congestion handling in Bali. What is that? Japanese government should ban export or embargo its automotive products to Indonesia, especially Bali. Is it possible? This somewhat eccentric and joking suggestion emerged in an informal discussion of four Japanese

have been visited such as Kuta Beach, Sanur, Ubud, Tanah Lot and others. This is their first arrival to this Island of the Gods. They know about Bali mostly from internet browsing. In their minds, Bali is a small island having beautiful beaches along with the high and unique culture as well as friendly community. “I am afraid of the crowded traffic conditions,” said Kazutaka Sato. He just laughed when knowing that almost all of his country’s vehicle products are spreading on the highway ranging from cars to motorcycles. “It should also be considered how to optimize buses and trains if available and other mass transportation mode,” he said. Balinese people are also recommended to prefer walking or cycling rather than using a motor vehicle when traveling to a relatively close distance just like the Japanese people that like to walk. Four Cultures of Karangasem Set as National Cultural Heritage our cultures and Karangasem are at issue after being set as national cultural heritage this year. The four cultures of Karangasem designated as national cultural heritage are the Usaba Sumbu of Timbrah customary village, Usaba Dangsil of Bungaya customary village as well as Selonding and Mekare-kare or Mageret Pandan of Tenganan village. Head of the Karangasem Culture Agency, Putu Arnawa, said on Tuesday (Aug. 22) the session of cultural determination was led directly by Prof. Pudentia Maria Sri Sunarti, from the expert team of intangible cultural heritage of the Ministry of Education and Culture. These four traditions were proposed because they are considered the most feasible according to the requirements set by the central government, especially the ministry of education and culture. Nevertheless, he indeed admitted that quite a lot of traditions in Karangasem must be preserved. On that account, the proposal of traditions into intangible national cultural heritage will be done gradually every year due to budget constraints. If they have been determined as intangible national cultural heritage, then the government

must perform a reconstruction to restore or preserve them so as not to become extinct. This measure has been done to revive the art of Wayang Wong and Gambuh at Ban village, Kubu, one of the cultural heritages having been well known. A year ago, two Karangasem traditions were established as intangible national cultural heritage. They consist of Gebug Ende of Seraya village and Terteran of Jasri villages. After going through a session at the ministry of education and culture, the two traditions were officially determined as national cultural heritage. After the determination, both are planned to be further proposed to UNESCO into a world cultural heritage. The proposal process will be done by central government. Another title of national cultural heritage for Karangasem was also achieved through Tenganan village with its distinctive geringsing cloth. It was established as a national cultural heritage a few years ago after proposed by the Bali provincial government to central government. Moreover, after holding the title as national cultural heritage, the typical geringsing cloth of Tenganan was also established by UNESCO as world cultural heritage. (BTN/kmb)

also highlighted the garbage they encountered in several tourist attractions. Similarly, they also paid attention to the existence of clean water. “We have a small island named Okinawa. It is just like Bali. The culture is also unique and has beautiful beaches,” said Erika Yoneshiro. So, when knowing in person

about the condition of Bali, would you still want to come again?” Surely, we still want to come because the culture is unique and beautiful,” said Tsumugu Nishimura. What expressed by these young and first and second semester students can become useful input for the government to make Bali better in the future. (BTN/kmb)

Sinar Bahari Wins Regatta on Kerobokan Beach

he activity organized to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence Day in Buleleng is so vibrant. Several races are held again by local government. One of them is a regatta held by the fisheries agency on Thursday (Aug.10). A total of 80 boats as representatives of fishermen group in North Bali struggled to be the fastest with the starting point on Kerobokan Beach, Sawan, and finished on Binaria Beach, Lovina, Buleleng subdistrict. The competition always flooded by participants and the audience was opened by Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana, with Deputy Regent Nyoman Sutjidra as well as the Head of Buleleng Fisheries Agency, Ni

Made Arnika. Regent Putu Agus Suradnyana said the regatta is an important moment in uplifting the spirit and fostering the love to maritime world as it poses a great potential owned by the country especially by Buleleng region. No less important is that this competition is worth developing into a tourist attraction that can be visited by foreign and domestic tourists. “This time there is a foreign participant. This should be utilized by the fisheries and maritime affairs agency to increase the interest of tourists coming to Buleleng. Later on, the fisheries agency must cooperate with the tourism office to promote this competition,” he said. Head of the Buleleng Fisher-

ies and Maritime Affairs, Made Arnika, said the regatta was followed by 80 participants as representatives of fishermen groups of each subdistrict. In addition, it was also graced with a duck catching competition on Lovina Beach. “This year, we are just looking for 80 participants considering the venue is not enough to accommodate more than 80 participants,” she said. Champion Sinar Bahari fishermen group from Kaliasem village, Banjar, could dominate the champion in this year’s regatta. The first champion was won by Ardiansyah and Dedy Rahmawan, the second by Rahmat and Dayat equally from the Sinar Bahari fishermen group. Both champions were warmly

welcomed by their home villagers. Moreover, their villagers hailed the champions like a hero considered to bring in good reputation for their home village

IGN Wiantara:

A Bartender Must Be Able to Do Juggling bartender should be able to do juggling, other than being good at mixing beverages. Visiting guests will not only drink the concoction, but also need entertainment. “By presenting juggling attraction, guests will have more opportunities to drink a lot and sell more,” said IGN Wiantara, when appearing to be the jury in the Bali Travel News Mocktail Break, some time ago. This food and beverage lecturer at the STIPAR Triatmajaya said that juggling attraction is able to draw the attention and change the atmosphere where guests initially do not get interested in drinking. But after watching the attraction, they finally want to try. “Therefore, some tourism training institutions deliberately include bartender curricula, either in formal, regular or extra-curricular subject. Bartender competition is able to generate the creativity of young generation,” he said. Juggling activity has been introduced for more than ten years ago. However, there are rarely events holding such a competition. “We do hope that Bali Travel News can hold this mocktail contest on a regular basis to encourage more skilled young bartenders. This competition will further stimulate young bartenders to better fill in themselves, especially in processing drinks,” added this assessor of FB service who is also a master assessor and FB trainer. Juggling activity is a skill owned by students that is not only enough to see, but must often be trained with the community. Young people pursuing the bartender today are just like an acrobatic dancer that is capable of performing very beautiful artistic show. They are able to display the throwing and capturing techniques with high

f Kamasan village (Klungkung) has typical Kamasan-style puppet painting and Nagasepaha village (Buleleng) has glass puppet painting, Kerambitan village in Tabanan has Kopang puppet painting. This painting has a uniqueness that is not less far from other puppet painting. Unfortunately, this painting is very worrying as having no generation and no event for promotion. To elevate this ancient style painting, the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar made improvement to the art of painting. “There are data that Kerambitan has a puppet painting similar to puppet painting of Kamasan named as Kopang puppet. Well, through this community service activity, the ISI Denpasar reconstructs the art having been almost extinct,” said Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Ardana, Chairman of the LP2MPP. Pioneer of this painting style already died, named A.A. Sucipta, through his Kopang art studio as an effort to preserve the art in the area. After him, the successor is Ida Bagus Ketut Suta. However, his development effort did not run maximally because of the limited facilities. “After that, we try to rebuild so that this painting can survive,” said Ngurah Ardana. In this reconstruction, the ISI Denpasar invited schools in Kerambitan, Kukuh, Baturiti, Klat-

ing and Tibubiyu villages totally amounting to 111 people. The participants trained get drawing tools, consumption and transportation cost. The training takes place during August - October 2017. They are trained by four teachers. “The results will be exhibited at Kerambitan Palace, so that it becomes a tourist attraction. In the exhibition of the ISI Denpasar, it will also involve the Kopang painters,” he said. As an instructor of the Kopang puppet painting, Nyoman Wiwana provides the steps of painting Kopang puppet that began with the introduction to various existing puppets. Then, it was resumed with the revival of Kopang puppet style. “Kopang puppet was started from Kerambitan puppet style at

Jero Marga Palace and has ever been exhibited in the Art Center with the intention to get the attention from all circles,” said Wiwana. Meanwhile, Ida Bagus Ketut Suta said that Kopang puppet painting was born from a painter named I Gusti Kopang from Jero Marga. This painting style is different from other puppet paintings, especially in the matter of theme, expression and motion, while the coloring is simple but has a strong characteristic. Overseas painters have learned this Kopang painting style. “His generation wishes to preserve his work. Therefore, he founded Kopang art studio, but the participants continue to decrease where today they remain two people,” he concluded. (BTN/015)

ada temple is well known for its detail and neat carving. This temple has a background of Majapahit kingdom. Formerly, this temple was intended as a place of the staying of Ratu Jayengrat. that is a nobleman who is told to sail from Majapahit and then ran aground on a rock stone at Kapal village when the wave tide entered until the area or village. The most important temple in the area of Kapal to the

north of Denpasar is Pura Sada. The temple was destroyed by an earthquake in 1917 and it wasn’t until the 1950s that the original building was restored. The temple was in fact an old dynastic sanctuary for the Royal family of Mengwi and its origins are in the Majapahit period. Pura Sada is the oldest of the Mengwi state shrines and predates Pura Taman Ayun. Pura Sada is dedicated to the Hindu Trinity of Bhrahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The Candi Bentar, or split gateway entrance to the temple, is constructed in a similar fashion of Javanese Candi’s, as is the 16 metre-high tower inside the temple courtyard. It is interesting to note that the only true remaining ancient remnants are the actual finely carved and decorated Candi Bentar, and the kala head. There are a few other stone sculptures in the same era. There are 54 stone seats in the temple grounds are commemorations to warriors who died in battle; each has an undecipherable inscription.

With GGS, Bangli Regent Builds from Villages

R

egent of Bangli, I Made Gianyar, asserted that in the second period of his position will consistently build Bangli from villages. According to him, it is like the philosophy of planting trees, in order to grow fertile and have big roots, they must be treated properly.

Similarly, when building Bangli and developing well, villages must be made advanced first. This was conveyed when implementing the ground breaking ceremony of wantilan belonging to Tingkad Batu hamlet, Jehem, Tembuku, on Tuesday (Aug. 29). From the beginning, Made Gianyar has committed to building Bangli from villages with a large village allocation fund (ADD) given to villages. According to him, the current ADD has reached IDR 75 billion where on average every village gets as much as IDR 1.1 billion, next year in 2018 will increase again to IDR 100 billion. On average, every village gets IDR 1.4 billion. Of course, the allocation will be adjusted to respective area, population and others according to the provisions. In addition, the Gerbangdesigot program aid is increased from IDR 100 million to IDR 1 billion for each village, as well as the Gerbang Gita Santi (GGS) program where people can access the assistance with a maximum activity valued at IDR 200 million. Made Gianyar explained that many

things can be resolved through the ADD budget such as farming road, concrete pavement, and some temples in Bangli can also be repaired by using ADD funds. According to him, the ADD is much more manageable unlike the use of village funds that must comply with the rules of central government through the regulation of Minister of Village Affairs. “But, the ADD follows the regent regulation made more flexible and keeps changing according to the needs of community. Moreover, it can be used for the interests of customs, religion and culture such as building temples, mass cremation ceremony including to build wantilan,” he explained. Specifically for the GGS program, he explained that in the regent regulation governing the GGS will be slightly changed. In the regent regulation, it is determined the maximum and minimum activities in this program, where the minimum limit of activities that can be funded through GGS cannot amount less than IDR 100 million while the maximum limit reaches IDR 1 billion. “In the future, we want the GGS ac-

tivities are not below IDR 100 million because the activities valued at IDR 100 million and IDR 10 million have the same complicated administrative matters, the paper spent is the same. So, if there are activities worth under IDR 100 million is better budgeted through the village,” he explained, Meanwhile, the Head of the Bangli Community and Village Empowerment Agency, I Dewa Bagus Riana Putra, said that this year’s Gerbang Gita Santi (GGS) program stays the same as the previous year. However, the substantial content of the Regent Regulation is slightly revised so that it can be accessed by villages (desa/ kelurahan). At kelurahan, the philosophy of the budget is in the form of grants, while at

Bangli Government Tourism Office : Jl. Sriwijaya No. 23 Bangli Ph. (0366) 91537. W. www.banglikab.go.id

desa in the form of special financial assistance (BKK) transferred through the village account. The regent regulation is almost the same, where village roads, farming roads, clean water infrastructure, sports facilities to community empowerment can be funded through this program. However, the essence of the GGS should still have a self-finance of the community. Submission of this program remains the same as before namely through a proposal addressed to the regent with the recommendation of the village authority. “It means that with this proposal, there is a story and desire from the bottom to apply for the activity to the regent because benchmark of the BKK is a proposal,” he said.

eing a Balinese (Hindu) is difficult. Life is difficult and so is death. Moreover, the current life lies in the midst of a variety of life burdens, like carrying the burden of hundred kilo gram. Apparently, it is also difficult to step further. It claims high costs such as daily living expenses, school fees, health cost and so on. Not to mention the spending on social activities. There are activities at local hamlet or at the village such as invitation of marriage, death, otonan birthday, tooth filing and so on. Of course, this does not only take time as well as cost, but there are also other religious activities at hamlet, village, family temple, and so forth. It also needs a cost. Not to mention the cost for activities as citizens. Anyway, it is difficult and often makes a headache. How about dying? Dying, to some people, is still considered difficult. It needs expenses to organize a last ceremony. This matter is often viewed as a burden. Moreover, approximately in the 2000s, the Hindus who died outside Bali Island, their body must often be brought home to Bali to be made an appropriate ritual. Nowadays,

B

it is different where Balinese Hindu population has spread out almost all over Indonesia. They have built many temples, shrines or other sanctums to glorify God and their ancestors like what they do in Bali. Besides, they have even equipped with crematorium. To some people, customs are still considered as a burden. This is true, but there are also people misinterpreting it, especially for outsiders. How difficult it is to be a Balinese. It is associated with a burdensome culture. Some stakeholders, customary leaders and some religious leaders have often held meetings about this issue. It is to find out non-burdensome solutions but not going out of customs or religious substances. Basically, everything has been agreed that the ancestors of the Balinese have been visionary. They have provided with some options so that customs and religious activities will not become a burden. There have been some ceremonial scales that can be done in outline. There are grandiose (uttama), medium (madya) and small (nista) scale. This is certainly associated with the capability. Besides, there are some traditions prevailing at particular place (dresta) that are no longer compatible with the conditions of the times, so that a solution is required in order that the members of community can equally carry out their duties and obligations. As citizens and customary members, on the one hand, they can implement the Hindu teachings well and correctly. On the other hand, they are also comfortable to earn a living by not feeling to be overwhelmed. Similarly, they do not feel ‘jealous’ to see other people who make a living in Bali more comfortably and freely. B N

It is very important when the people of the world are increasingly aware of the importance of the environment and sensitive to energy-saving movements. Acting Head of the Denpasar Tourism Office, Anak Agung Bagus Sudharsana, invited all the tourism components in this region to maintain Denpasar so as to remain a green and clean tourist area. He welcomed the contribution of society and other circles that jointly continues to build

such awareness. Team Leader of the Denpasar Green Hotel, Gde Palgunadi, explained that the activity was started a year ago. Each region is also expected to perform similar efforts like what Denpasar does. The team does not only assess but also provides education, assistance, preservation and of course promotion. The object assessment is based on Green Hotel’s guidebook issued by ministry of tourism in combination with local genius of Balinese society. For that purpose, the team involves many parties ranging from academicians, government, experts, humanist, religious figures to media. Dr. AA Ayu Oka Saraswati and AA Gde Raka Dalem as well as team members assessed positively the participation of hotels in this activity. On the other hand, there are still some hotels that are not responsive. n August 2017, there was an increase in the number of foreign tourist visit to Alas Kedaton tourist attraction. In the previous month, the average number of foreign tourist visit amounted to 100 people, while from August it increased to 200 people per day. “Probably, it is the result of our continued promotion to tourist objects in Bali,” said Chairman of the Management Board, I Wayan Semadi. According to Semadi, the increasing number of foreign tourist arrivals started in early August 2017. Thus, the number of foreign tourist visit exceeds domestic tourists with the composition of 60 percent of foreign tourists and 40 percent of domestic tourists. Foreign tourists are dominated by those from India and China. Meanwhile, the average of tourists from Europe and Australia remain the same as before. Meanwhile, domestic tourists are dominated by those from the cities of Java Island mostly consisting of employees of companies traveling in groups. There are also from others cities in Sumatra and Kalimantan. “Domestic tour-

ist is dominated by company employees, while on holidays they mostly consist of pupils and college students,” said Semadi. The increase in foreign tourist visits, explained Semadi, cannot be separated from the efforts of continuous promotion and establishment of cooperation with tour guides. “We conduct promotions and even cooperate with tour guides to take their guests to Alas Kedaton. Surely, it is also accompanied by the arrangement of the object area. We also visit the objects in Bali, including building communication with tour guides and travel agencies outside Bali,” he said. As a new management, Semadi and his colleagues are continuously doing the arrangement, other than carrying out promotion. Tourist attractions, especially the culture-related ones continue to be implemented, so that the Alas Kedaton has always been an attractive tourist destination. “In addition to monkeys, Alas Kedaton also has flying fox, local forest and the Khayangan Kedaton Temple rich in historical relics becoming an attraction,” concluded Semadi. gurah Rai Airport noted there is an increase in the number of foreign tourist arrival coming to Bali when entering this third quarter. Based on data of the immigration office, until July 2017, at least 3.5 million foreign tourists arrived through Ngurah Rai Airport. There was an increase of 22.18 percent over the same period in 2016. This significant increase is still dominated by foreign tourists from China equal to 25 percent or about 896,000 people. During the past two years, China is ranked first in terms of foreign tourist coming to Bali. When compared to the same period in 2016, Chinese tourists were recorded to amount to 559,000 with the growth rate reaching 60.2 percent. Australian tourist is in the second position amounting to 632,000 people or 18 percent and the third position is occupied by Indian tourists reaching 234,000 or 7 percent of the total tourist arrival. “In 2017, the Ngurah Rai Airport targets to bring in 5.58 million foreign tourists. Seeing our records until last July, it means that the achievement almost reaches 64 percent. If we see the growth continuing to increase

significantly, we believe it can meet the target,” said Yanus Suprayogi, General Manager of Ngurah Rai Airport, on Monday (Sep. 4). Yanus added that this optimism is also supported by the large interest of foreign airlines to serve the route to Bali. “Last month, we first received the flight of Mehan Air from Tehran, Iran. Bali is the first destination in Indonesia targeted by Mehan Air,” he added. He also saw the increasing trend of tourists from the Middle East. “This year, the percentage has increased 2-fold or 100 percent compared to last year. In 2016, during the period of January to July there were 17,000 people, while this year amounts to 35,000. Apparently, this is positive impact of the visit of the King of Saudi Arabia to Bali last March,” said Yanus. This increasing potential of foreign tourist becomes one of the factors to Angkasa Pura I as the operator of the Ngurah Rai Airport to accelerate the development and addition of operating facilities. Currently, the Angkasa Pura I is encouraging the acceleration of the addition of 11 parking stands and 40 check-in counters. BTN (BTN/015)

Beneh said that tirta tawar consisted of two Balinese words, namely tirta and tawar. Tirta meant ‘water’ and tawar or penawar meant ‘a drug.’ In addition to cure all diseases, the temple was also serving as a bathing place of the deities usually taken advantage by people from three villages namely the Petulu, Kutuh and Ubud customary village. “There is a sacred white huge eel believed as property guarding the temple,” he added. According to Beneh, there was a tradition that should be followed and not be violated. When taking a bath or melukat, people were not allowed to put on any clothes. In other words, they should be naked. People were allowed to invoke holy water as much as they needed. However, it should not be cooked. Meanwhile, as the abstinence, people were not allowed to commercialize or sell the holy water of Tirta Tawar Temple. In other words, people invoked the holy water and then processed it for sale either in the form of fruit salad, beverage or other food. “People who violate can experience bad luck or calamities,” he said. Any people who wanted to enter the temple were obliged to put on Balinese customary attires, a worship-style clothing of the Hindu society. Then, people were forbidden to enter the temple in a cuntaka condition, such as there was a death of family members and the woman who is getting her period. Making use of the water for washing was not allowed. When violating this tradition, people would be afflicted by disaster, accidents or illness. ourist objects relying on natural beauty remaining pristine increasingly emerge in Buleleng. One of them is Jambangan waterfall at Kelampuak, Tamblang village, Kubutambahan. This adds to the number of waterfall attractions in North Bali, other than the existing ones such as the waterfall at Gitgit village, Sukasada, waterfall at Sambangan and Lemukih village, Sawan subdistrict. To get to the location of Jambangan waterfall, visitors simply walk along the path. This journey requires little caution because it has steep and slippery terrain. Otherwise, visitors can slip. After trying to conquer the steep path, visitors will get paid after arriving at the location. Nature at this waterfall stays natural and is not much known to visitors. This superiority is an attraction for tourists making a visit. In addition to seeing the water flow from a height, visitors also choose to swim in the

pool of waterfall. Chief of Kelampuak customary village, Made Suka Astawa, recently encountered said that Jambangan waterfall is a tourist attraction starting to be developed independently. The location very close to the main road of Singaraja-Kintamani (Bangli) makes this tourist attraction easy to be reached by visitors. The arrangement made by local people is the opening of the path to the location. Next year (2018), the village government plans the development of Jambangan waterfall object into a priority agenda. Related to the name of the waterfall, Astawa claimed the residents name it Jambangan because the puddles under the waterfall are so wide with the base getting conical. The waterfalls are similar to large frying pan (Indonesian: jambangan), so that people call them by Jambangan waterfall. In the meantime, Secretary of Tamblang village, Made Wasuyutha, said that potential of this tourist object is managed seriously so as to bring in positive benefits for the village itself. This tourist attraction is believed to be able to stimulate domestic and foreign tourists to visit because of its pristine nature. In order to have more values, the original atmosphere will be well preserved. To achieve this, local village government starting in 2018 will propose to the tourism office in order to be designated into a tourist destination. This determination will make it easier for the management to submit a proposal for the area arrangement. In addition, the allocation of village funds will be allocated for the area arrangement, especially road access that still need to be repaired, so that visitors are comfortable when getting down the road to location of the object. History on Heyday of Buleleng Harbor

uleleng Harbor in Singaraja town has experienced its heyday until the 1950s. At that time, it was the main entrance to Bali since the Dutch occupation until the capital of the Lesser Sunda Province. In the days of Dutch occupation, the harbor was used for loading and unloading of freights and foreign cruises bringing in tourists to enjoy the splendor

B

offered by Island of the Gods. At that time, the Northern Bali Beach got its golden age. Today, the great reputation of Buleleng Harbor almost leaves no traces. Besides, the former office of customs and excise has changed its function. The other old buildings have become a meeting hall when Buleleng hosted the IMACO event. Indeed, the old story has been ‘locked up’ in some literatures

and the mouths of historical performers. Historically, the directorate of cultural heritage preservation and museum through the Buleleng culture office plans to conduct revitalization of the Lesser Sunda Museum in Buleleng district. This plan was welcomed by the Head of Buleleng Culture Agency, Putu Tastra Wijaya. According to him, Buleleng is given the opportunity to build the Lesser Sunda Museum in the area of the ex-Buleleng Harbor. “We are very grateful to be given the opportunity. Surely, we will immediately follow it up,” he said. Tastra explained that the museum construction plan is still constrained by location because the building planned to be used as a museum is still occupied by the housing, settlement area and land agency. Under this condition, his agency has been looking for a way out by coordinating directly with the regent of Buleleng. According to him, the solution provided by the regent is by relocating it to official residence of the chairman of house of representative or to SMPN 1 Singaraja junior high school. “Well, we have coordinated with the agency, and they agree as long as it has

been provided with location elsewhere,” he added. The Lesser Sunda Museum is planned to be realized next year. Moreover, in the near future the official of central government will visit Buleleng to review the readiness of Buleleng in the provision of location for the museum. When compared to the Museum of Buleleng, the Lesser Sunda Museum will store more specific objects. Aside from historical objects, it will store images, books and stories about Buleleng when becoming the center of administration of Bali. “Collection of the Lesser Sunda Museum will be more specific. Of course, they are only related to the history of Lesser Sunda,” he added. In the meantime, to complement the museum’s collection, Tastra revealed that he has coordinated with Buleleng people who have kept the objects and historical heritages of Lesser Sunda. With a humanistic approach, he believed people want to donate their historical objects to the museum collections. Besides, he has also established cooperation with several museums in the Netherlands that still restore the objects of Lesser Sunda history. “Some museums in the Netherlands have gone bankrupt, so they are willing to return the historical objects provided that we in Buleleng have a decent place,” he added. For example, the region in Sumatra, West Java, and Bali produce special coffee because farmers have been provided with postharvest handling. “In addition to the original coffee of Kintamani, we also introduce the coffee produced in the area of Pupuan, Tabanan,” she said. R. Deryl Juniar, Store Manager of Black Eye, said that open brewing bar is chosen to support three basic ideas of Black Eye Coffee & Roastery in the form of education, coffee machine and innova-

tion. Therefore, Black Eye Coffee & Roastery always educates connoisseurs and coffee lovers so that they get to know coffee more profoundly through coffee talk or manual brewing method. “As long as this manual brewing method is executed, there is a discussion between coffee lovers and baristas within 2 minutes,” he said. As for the kitchen, it applies open kitchen concept to highlight the process of making healthy and hygienic food with modern equipment. Visitors can directly see the process of serving the menus ordered. Tirta Tawar Temple Is Believed Can Heal All Sickness history and mystery. The power to heal all diseases is commonly invoked here, so that its existence is still considered sacred by local community. Two routes can be taken to arrive at the temple. Travelers can pass through Ubud or Petulu village. The track leading to the temple is beautiful and the atmosphere is cool. Thus, the road is often taken advantage by foreign travelers for trekking. Chief of Petulu customary village, I Wayan Beneh, said the Tirta Tawar Temple had the power to heal illnesses, purificatory qualities to all impurities, grace of efficacy and procreation. Many people of local village, other regions in Bali and even from outside Bali were also often invoking a recovery here. “People usually come to present oblation and then perform purificatory rite (melukat) in the shower of this temple,” he said. “There is a sacred white huge eel believed as property guarding the temple,” he added. a famous temple. “As a drug, any disease can be cured. When the water is weighed, it will be heavier than ordinary water,” said Beneh convincingly.

“Some museums in the Netherlands have gone bankrupt, so they are willing to return the historical objects provided that we in Buleleng have a decent place,” he added. gurah Rai Airport noted there is an increase in the number of foreign tourist arrival coming to Bali when entering this third quarter.

BTN (BTN/015)

eing a Balinese (Hindu) is difficult.

destination. One of which is to keep the environment in order to stay green and sustainable.

To that end, they also appealed in accordance with directive of the mayor to jointly make Denpasar a culture-based, green and clean tourist city. Other than visiting the Hotel Sanur Paradise Plaza, on that occasion the team also visited Hotel Puri Dalem and Sri Phala. B N (BTN/pal)

They are able to display the throwing and capturing techniques with high

difficulty level. “Students are now able to throw a number of items with little error. Variation of the movement is also a lot, so it does not become monotonous,” added this author of Bartending & Mixology (2016) and Cruise Line Knowledge (2015). Sometimes the accompaniment is also managed well, so that its appearance is like a dance blended with music accompaniment. It is not different from a dance movement with tanjek or break of gamelan that becomes a point drawing his concern. “More importantly, a bartender must be able to process drinks and know the taste because it is required to know the taste,” said the most favorite lecturer in STIPAR Triatmajaya (2000-present). In essence, continued this professional motivator, a bartender is not only skilled in practice, but must also have knowledge by reading books and listening, have the skill that can mix with methods to be mastered. Besides, it is related to the mastery of ingredients as well as working attitude and appearance in dressing. (BTN/015)

f Kamasan village (Klungkung) has typical Kamasan-style puppet painting and Nagasepaha village (Buleleng) has glass puppet painting, Kerambitan village in Tabanan has Kopang puppet painting.

“It means that with this proposal, there is a story and desire from the bottom to apply for the activity to the regent because benchmark of the BKK is a proposal,” he said.

The four students were very enthusiastic with the program of the Denpasar municipality so they will inform them upon their arrival in Japan. Thus, more volunteers will come to Bali, not only running the program but also traveling. They spent ten days in Bali by becoming a volunteer as Japanese language instructor at the Mataken Gakko, a free Japanese language education institution for everyone wishing to learn Japanese there. They admitted that Bali is very beautiful and so are the beaches. Several tourist attractions have been visited such as Kuta, Sanur, Ubud and Tanah Lot.

They studied at the Faculty of Sciences. Another one, Kazutaka Sato is a student of the Faculty of Engineering. They have been in Bali since 10 days ago. Many tourist attractions

(BTN/kmb)

urfing has really gained popularity in Tanah Lot. Batubolong Coast at Tanah Lot area famous as a place for surfing among in local surfer or international surfer cause height of its wave which is compatible for surfing. it fits perfectly on the tongue.
