TERNATE - Indonesia closed a domestic airport in eastern Indonesia on Monday after a volcano spewed ash 2,000 metres into the air, an official said.

Thousands of residents of Buleleng Customary Village flocked the procession of mass cremation ceremony (Ngaben) started from Sasana Budaya Hall to public cemetery of Buleleng, Sunday (Dec 4). This condition caused the Jalan Gajah Mada and Jalan Veteran Singaraja closed, while the traffic flows from Denpasar to Singaraja or traffic of sand trucks usually passed through the Jalan Gajah Mada were diverted to another road. The transfer of traffic flows resulted in congestion on some road sections.

The mass cremation procession started at 00:00 a.m. was preceded with the activity of meras margi or initiating the road as a symbol to spiritually open the road to Public Cemetery of Buleleng. Then, on Sunday morning the procession of the body representation (sawa) was started from the Sasana Budaya Hall on Jalan Veteran to cemetery on Jalan Gajah Mada. Such procession was followed by thousands of residents denoting the families of the 621bodies involved in the mass cremation. Continued on page 6
