San Francisco demands Justin Bieber remove graffiti

SAN FRANCISCO - Justin Bieber launched an aggressive promotional push for his latest album but don’t count the city of San Francisco among the Beliebers.

This photo provided by the San Francisco City Attorney’s office shows Justin Bieber graffiti on a San Francisco street on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2015 that was part of a widespread and illegal “guerrilla marketing” campaign in San Francisco promoting the Nov. 13 release of the pop star’s new album, “Purpose.” Officials demanded Monday that companies linked to the Canadian singer’s campaign clean up ads spray-painted on sidewalks to publicize his album “Purpose.” Graffiti that appeared in busy areas of San Francisco and other cities including New York gave the title and sometimes the album’s November 13 release date. Yet after more than a month that included rain, the ads remain visible with Bieber’s entourage apparently using real spray-paint rather than

chalk. Dennis Herrera, who holds the elected position of city attorney, said that the guerrilla marketing campaign “illegally exploits” San Francisco streets and could cause dangerous distractions to pedestrians. Herrera posted pictures of the persistent graffiti on his official website with a line taken from one of the album’s songs: “It’s too late now to say sorry.” The graffiti “irresponsibly tells

our youth that like-minded lawlessness and contempt for public property are condoned and encouraged by its beneficiaries -- including Mr. Bieber and the record labels that produce and promote him,” he said in a letter to Bieber’s Def Jam label and its distributor, conglomerate Universal. Mohammed Nuru, the city’s public works director, said that San Francisco sidewalks were “not canvasses for corporate advertising.” “Yet these guerrilla marketers believe they are above the law when it comes to blighting our city and we will take a strong stand against them,” he said in a statement. San Francisco authorities asked for cooperation to clean up the graffiti, threatening if this were not the case to pursue legal action that could cost Bieber’s label and distributor up to $2,500 per graffiti site. The famously left-leaning city has previously forced other corporations including IBM and NBC Universal to pay the costs of clean-up, according to Herrera’s office. There was no immediate response from Bieber, Def Jam or Universal. “Purpose” is the first album in three years for Bieber, after a period in which he became better known for off-stage legal issues including a vandalism charge for throwing eggs at a neighbor’s house in an upscale part of the Los Angeles area. With the aggressive advertising and Bieber’s new tropical house sound, “Purpose” opened at number one in the United States and numerous other countries but was quickly eclipsed on the top of the charts by Adele’s blockbuster “25.” (afp)

Zhang Ziyi gives birth to baby girl

BEIJING - Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, who gained international fame for her role in “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” posted a photo of a baby’s hand online Monday to announce the arrival of her daughter. Two adult hands hold the baby’s hand and the caption reads: “December 27th, 2015, you, me, her ... With the birth of this little life, we have our own family. Everything went safely and smoothly. Infinite gratitude!” Zhang’s manager confirmed in a text message to The Associated Press that the 36-year-old actress had given birth following the post on the actress’s Sina Weibo account. It is Zhang’s first child, and the third for Chinese rock singer and composer Wang Feng who has two daughters from previous relationships. Zhang accepted a marriage proposal delivered by drone from Wang in February at her birthday party. Reports said she gave birth in the United States. Zhang is one of China’s biggest movie stars and catapulted to stardom in the West with the Oscar-nominated “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” A sequel is due out next year but she will not be in it. Her other English credits include “Rush Hour 2,” ‘’Memoirs of a Geisha” and “Horsemen.” Her performance in the 2013 Hong Kong-Chinese acclaimed martial-arts epic “The Grandmaster,” earned her several best-actress trophies across Asia. Wang became a household name in China after appearing as a judge of the “Voice of China” singing show in 2013. (ap)

DENPASAR - In Bali there remain around 160,000 poor people or 4.74 percent of the population. Most of them are in Buleleng, Karangasem, Bangli and Klungkung. Even though it is considered low, the poverty rate is very difficult to be alleviated. “According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), poverty in Bali coming to less than five percent is classified into hardcore poverty. So, it is just like a rock because the majority of poor people are already elderly, sick, disabled and orphans,” said the Head of the Regional Development Planning Board (Bappeda) Bali, Putu Astawa, in Denpasar. Astawa added that the government cannot undertake empowerment to the poor with such conditions. It can only provide social

protection assistance through Social Affairs Agency like in the form of incentives and rice for the poor. On that account, his agency cannot target when the poverty in Bali can be alleviated. “When having been elderly and sickly, they cannot be empowered. It is different from people who are still lazy and unwilling to work, they are given an empowerment program,” he explained. On the other hand, Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, even admitted that so far the program planning of the

activities by Bali province is still less accurate considering there are still people living in poverty. “Although many programs have been enjoyed by the people, to date there are still poor people. It is not their fault but our fault, so that this understanding can be really understood by all of us,” he said. Pastika added there are still a lot of planning activities considered unnecessary and do not provide benefits for the poor. On that account, all the programs having been planned will be selected back in order to provide benefits for the poor. “We’ll further select them again one by one. The unnecessary will not be carried out in order to get

more money in the regional budget amendment 2016. As a result, we can divert the funds to priority programs to accelerate poverty alleviation,” he explained. Pastika also complained about the lack of accurate data owned by each village so that it becomes obstacle in the implementation of poverty alleviation program. Recent clashes amongst by members of organized gangs that took place at Kerobokan Prison and on Jalan Teuku Umar In Denpasar, just after the simultaneous leadership elections, are an embarassemsnet to Bali. At the end of year holidays, Chief of the Bali Police Sugeng Priyanto therefore took decisive measures by calling on the frontmen of Baladika and Laskar Bali, asking them to hand over their weapons as soon as possible. The police chief also let them know that if any weapons are found in ensuing raids, those who are caught with them will be legally processes, and also that should there be any further clashes between the two gangs, that the leaders will be the first to be arrested. “Their leader must be responsible so they will be held accountable and also if weapons are not handed over voluntarily, we will find them. There are no compromises to be made as there are laws governing these things,” affirmed the Bali Police Chief. In addition, the leaders of the organizations were also asked to control their men. Both organizations promised to make peace and to not have the incident prolonged. Now, police chief and other law enforcement officials will wait to see evidence of this promise.
