MEDAN — A small plane on a local flight in western Indonesia crashed into a mountainous area Thursday and the 18 people aboard were feared dead, officials said. Rugged terrain and rains hampered searchers trying to reach the wreckage.
The Spanish-designed CASA C-212 was about halfway through its 30-minute flight between North Sumatra and Aceh provinces when it lost contact with air traffic control, said Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan. Minutes later, the turboprop-powered plane sent out a distress signal and then dropped off the radar, Bonar Hutagaol, an Air Force marshal, told TVOne.
“I saw something unusual,” Agus, a witness, told the station. “A smoking plane circling very low before it disappeared from my view.” Wreckage of the aircraft — spotted during an aerial survey near the mountainous village of Bahorok — appeared to be largely intact, its wings still fused to the body, said Ervan. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) said the export value of Indonesian batik until 2010 rose 56 percent from 2006. In 2006, the export of batik only reached USD 14.3 million and then last year rose to USD 22.3 million. “Sales of batik in Indonesia last year was IDR 3.9 trillion, or higher than the previous four
years where the sales only came to IDR 2.5 trillion,” said the president in the opening of World Batik Summit 2011 in JCC Senayan, Jakarta, Wednesday (Sep 28). According to the president, such an increase was capable of driving the real sector at home. Hopefully, the excitement of real sector could absorb a large amount of labor force so that unemployment could be diminished. “As a result, the
poverty rate can be minimized. And at the same time, it will increase the welfare of our people and batik artisans,” he said. When we pick up a packet of soap most of us look at the brand rather than the real information on the back which tells us if these products are tested in a humane way. Right now millions of mice, rabbits, primates, cats, dogs and many other animals are being kept in cold, horrible cages. Most of the time, these living conditions kill the animals rather than the product.
Despite the amount of protests and public outcries on this issue, some cosmetic companies still continue to test their products on animals. They use this method because it is cost effective. Groups like PETA and RSPCA work to stop companies from testing their commodities on animals. These groups seek to work with the companies and to inform them and the public about the horrible lives the animals have to endure. The RSPCA and PETA also work to introduce new testing methods that don’t involve animals, but instead introduce using eyes from eye banks and other much more humane techniques. These methods have been proven to be much more accurate than
the tests that are conducted on animals. Many groups have already adapted these methods and are active advocates in an animal testing free environment. The European Union has recently introduced a ban against animal testing and in 2013 they are introducing an all sales ban so that products that are tested using animals are not allowed to be bought anywhere. If you want to get involved in this push for animal rights, and don’t want to wait until 2013, you can log onto the RSPCA or PETA’s website and get involved, or you can simply buy products that support a no animal testing message.

Philippine ex-president Fidel Ramos said Wednesday that China’s recent assertiveness over sea disputes was motivated by a desire to challenge US power, as he predicted more tensions to come. On a visit to Washington, Ramos described China and the United States as “shadowboxing” over the South China Sea and East China Sea where Beijing has growing friction with countries including the Philippines, Vietnam and Japan. “China’s proximate aim, it seems to me, is to limit American freedom of access” and “erode the credibility of Washington’s security guarantees to the East Asian states, including and especially the Philippines,” Ramos, who was president from 1992 to 1998, said at the Heritage Foundation think-tank. “We, where we come from, expect South China Sea tensions to continue because the root cause is really China’s perceived need to
break out from under the strategic dominance of the Western allies,” Ramos said. However, Ramos said he did not expect military confrontation due to the vast US military superiority over China. He called for governments to shift away spending from the military to fighting “real enemies” such as poverty. Ramos was visiting Washington as part of 60th anniversary commemorations of the Mutual Defense Treaty between Washington and its former colony. Elsewhere in the region, the United States also has security pacts with Australia, Japan, South Korea and Thailand. Ramos welcomed the role of the US military in Asia, saying it had provided security to Asia and allowed it to grow economically. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

JAKARTA — Zoya Amirin has come across every myth imaginable in her job as sex psychologist in Indonesia: An uncircumcised girl will become sex-crazed. Clove cigarettes increase virility. A gecko’s saliva can cure AIDS. Knowing such misinformation can ruin relationships and even lives, Amirin — the only woman certified in her field in the world’s most populous Muslim nation — has decided to launch a weekly podcast to provide some frank, accurate talk about the bedroom. Her 15-minute, debut episode of “In Bed with Zoya” will air on her website Thursday. “People here really believe in myths ... that’s my biggest challenge,” said Amirin, adding she wants to make her show as cool as possible so people will tune in without feeling they’re being talked down to. “It’s time to embrace our sexuality in a healthy way,” she said, “and to be mature in our understanding.” Her job illustrates some of the changes taking place in Indonesia, which toppled its longtime dictator Gen. Suharto in a wave of prodemocracy street protests just over a decade ago. The nation of 240 million remains socially conservative in most areas, including relationships, something old-style politicians are desperate to maintain. Yet these customs are coming under pressure from a more freewheeling approach
to sex, in part due to increased wealth and more females living and working alone before marriage. Nearly 40 percent of teens have had sex, a new survey shows, and the Internet has opened the gates to a subject long considered off-limits in public schools. Bringing up the word “condom” could cost a teacher his job. “The taboo is not against sex, but against making it public and formal,” said Julia Suryakusuma, an Indonesian sociologist who often writes about human sexuality. That point was hammered home by Education Minister Muhammad Nuh himself, after a video of a much-loved pop star having sex with two girlfriends made its way to YouTube, putting the country of the verge of sexual hysteria. Asked whether it might be time to add sex ed to the curriculum, he said “No! ... I may be obsolete .... but I think this is something you should learn about naturally.” Young people have even less luck at home. For most, bringing up the subject of sex with their parents is inconceivable. “That would just be too embarrassing,” said Dianita Permani, an 18-year-old high school student in the capital, Jakarta. “I’d rather talk about it with my close friends ... look things up on the Internet, read vulgar novels,” she says with a giggle. “Personally, I don’t want to have sex until I get married. But it is everywhere. I’ll just have to follow my instincts, I guess, and figure out for myself
what’s good or bad.” Amirin hopes people like Permani will turn to her as a credible and easily accessible source of information. Her podcast, which will be cohosted by television personality Chantal Della Concetta, who has drawn some controversy herself for racy lingerie pictures in a popular magazine, will at first be a frank conversation between two friends. The first subject: Debunking sexual myths. They include that putting a bead beneath a boy’s foreskin will enhance his sexual pleasure, and that girls will be nymphomaniacs if they don’t get circumcisions, which continue despite a 2006 ban. Folklore that gecko saliva could cure AIDS, in a country grappling with the fastest growing endemic in Asia, unleashed a wave of gecko hunting and a surge in prices for the reptiles a couple of years ago. Eventually, the website will include a free online chat service. Both women are ready for criticism. Though most of Indonesia’s 210 million Muslims are moderate, a hardliner fringe has become more vocal and violent in recent years, attacking bars, transvestites and anything else deemed “blasphemous.” The hard-liners also have succeeded in influencing politicians who — afraid of being labeled unIslamic — pushed through a controversial anti-porn law, used to imprison Nazril “Ariel” Irham, the pop star, even though it appears his sexcapades were never intended for public viewing.
“Our handmade batik products are more superior than those from China and Malaysia because theirs are printed ones. Therefore we don`t have to worry about the number of batik imports,” Wacik said. The culture and tourism minister noted that his office would continue to promote Indonesian handmade batik products intensively in overseas countries to make Indonesia known as the home of batik. “It is through an intensive promotion in overseas countries that Indonesian handmade batik products be more well-known than the imported ones,” the minister said. Indonesians were asked to wear batik on October 2, 2009 following UNESCO`s decision to add the traditional dyeing technique to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list. “Following UNESCO`s rec-
ognition, we should continue to maintain and preserve our traditional batik products,” Wacik said, asking the Indonesian people from all walk of life to always wear batik and love it. Meanwhile, Industry Minister MS Hidayat admitted that the entry of imported batik products into domestic markets was feared to disturb the competitive power of national batik industry. Therefore the government has resisted Batik-mark logo for the people to distinguish domestic batik products from the imported ones from other countries. Batik products from China and Malaysia with much cheaper prices in the past few years have dominated a number of markets in Jakarta, but the culture and tourism minister expressed hope that Indonesians would love domestic batik than those from other countries.

D NPASAR - Balinese entrepreneurs and exporters have expanded their wings to Central and South America selling art, handicraft, and some other non-oil gas products. “The United State is the biggest market of Bali s traditional handicraft commodities, but Central and South America are new markets,� Head of the Denpasar Export, Industrial and Trade Section of Industry and Trade Agency Putu Bagiada said here Thursday. The exports to Central and South America were worth 6 million US dollars from January to August 2011, a 14 pct increase compared to only 5.2 million dollars in last year s same period . Bagiada said the entrepreneurs or exporters had been asked to sell their products to the export markets in Africa, South Asia and the Middle East. “Central and South America are also potential markets and Bali s exports to Brazil and South America had exceeded 1.7 million
dollars from January to August 2011,� he said. In the meantime, Central America is still lacking in Balinese export products, as buyers from seven countries including the Bahamas, Panama and Costa Rica only imported their commodities worth less than a million dollars. “United States is the biggest buyer of Bali s handicraft goods for many years, and in early 2011 has recorded 71.4 million dollars in US foreign exchange earnings,� said Bagiada. The syrup made without preservatives could last up to 14 days in cold temperatures. Meanwhile, ingredients used to make the purple yam syrup consisted of yam, sugar, salt, water and lemon juice. Then, the tools required for the preparation were blender, pans, strainer, spatula, stove and sterile bottle. For preparation, ďŹ rst of all, cleanse ďŹ nely the purple yam and peel it off. Then, chop, add water and blend it. Furthermore, strain and add sugar, salt, and cook the batter in a saucepan. Stir it until slightly thickening. After that, chill and put it into sterilized bottle. Klungkung Ancient Kingdom
Destinations KERTHAGOSA Justice located at Klungkung was the oldest kingdom on the island and its “Raja” the most exalted. Kerthagosa (The Court Hall) and Taman Gili (The Floating Pavilion) were formerly parts of Semarapura Palace of Klungkung Kingdom, built in the 18th century. A main gate or the royal palace well known as “Pemedal Agung” is hitherto standing intactly at the Western part of the Court Hall and the Floating Pavilion. For its ceiling painted in the traditional wayang style portraying punishment in hell and the rewards in heaven and other aspects of moralities. The floating pavilion, garden and lotus ponds in this walledin complex, located on the main intersection of town are a reminder of the former glory of this kingdom. Taman Gili, Royal Courts of Justice Pavilions, with their surrounding lotus ponds, are a graceful reminder of the former glory of this kingdom. These pavilions, built in the 18th century, are located at the main road intersection side of the town of Klungkung (40 km. from Denpasar). They are especially known for their ceiling murals, painted in the traditional “Wayang” style, depicting the punishments in hell for miscreants, and higher up, the rewards

in heaven for those that lead a good and honest life. The courts were presided over by three pedandas (high priest), and continued to fulfill their function through Dutch colonial times. The Kerta was the island’s highest court of justice. The old buildings were renovated and restored in 1960. Behind the Kerthagosa stands a tall gateway. This gateway is all that remains of what was once the first and most elaborate palace in Bali, which was destroyed by the Dutch artillery when they bombarded the town of Klungkung and Gelgel into submission in 1908. As had happened in other kingdoms in Bali, the Dewa Agung led a great “Puputan”, or ceremonial fight to death, and so ended 600 years of rule in Bali by the lineal descendents of the emperors of Majapahit. After this conquest, the Dutch had gained control of all of Bali. The town of Klungkung centers around the Puri Smarapura or ‘Palace of the God of Love” former home of Bali’s most illustrious line of kings. Unfortunately, all that remains now are the great gate and garden, and two pavilions with magnificently painted ceilings. These are the Kerta Gosa Hall of Justice overlooking the town’s main intersection, and the larger Bale Kambang or
Floating Pavilion just behind it. The rest of this splendid complex was razed to the ground in 1908, during the royal mass suicide or puputan (‘ending”) against the Dutch invaders. This event removed the last obstacle to Dutch domination of the island. A monument commemorating the puputan now stands across the road. The Kerta Gosa was a place for the administration of traditional justice in precolonial times by a council consisting of the great king and his priests. The Paintings on the ceiling tell of the punishments awaiting evil-doers in hell, and of the delights of the gods in heaven. Different levels and stations in heaven and hell are described through the story of the hero Bima, who journeys to the underworld to save the souls of his parents. These scenes were used to alternately threaten and cajole anyone who appeared before the court. Like the Sistine Chapel, the Kerthagosa presents a whole complex of ideas on the workings of fate and the role of the divine in human affairs. The ceilings themselves have been repainted three times in recent memory. The last complete refurbishment occurred in 1960 under the famous artist Pan Seken, although in 1984, weather damage caused a number of panels to be repaired.

NEW YORK — Lady Gaga says a Nevada-based company is trying to horn in on her fame to market cosmetics and jewelry. She’s suing in New York. The Grammy Award-winning pop star sued Excite Worldwide LLC on Monday. The lawsuit says the company applied without her permission to trademark the names “Lady Gaga” and “Lady Gaga LG” for makeup and baubles. Excite Worldwide didn’t immediately respond to tele-

The ability of forests, plants and soil to suck carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air has been under-estimated, according to a study on Wednesday that challenges a benchmark for calculating the greenhouse-gas problem. Like the sea, the land is a carbon “sink”, or sponge, helping to absorb heat-trapping CO2 disgorged by the burning of fossil fuels. A conventional estimate is that soil and vegetation take in roughly 120 billion tonnes, or gigatonnes, of carbon each year through the natural process of photosynthesis. The new study, published in the science journal Nature, says the uptake could be 25-45 percent higher, to 150-175 gigatonnes per year. But relatively little of this extra carbon is likely to be stored permanently in the plant, say the researchers. Instead, it is likely to re-enter the atmosphere through plant respiration. This will be a disappointment for those looking for some good news in the fight against climate change. The more carbon is
sequestered in the land, the less carbon enters the atmosphere, where it helps to trap heat from the Sun. Lead researcher Lisa Welp, of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in the University of California at San Diego, said figuring out the annual carbon uptake from the terrestrial biosphere had been one of the biggest problems in the emissions equation. Scientists, though, were confident about current estimates for carbon sequestration in land and this was unlikely to change much in the light of the new findings, she said. “More CO2 is passing through plants (than thought), not that it actually stays
there very long,” she said in email exchange with AFP. “The extra CO2 taken up as photosynthesis is most likely returned right back to the atmosphere via respiration.” The research looked at isotopes, or variations, in the oxygen component of CO2, using a databank of atmospheric sampling going back three decades. These isotopes are a chemical tag, indicating the kind of water the molecule has come into contact with. The researchers looked at isotopes whose concentrations are linked to rainfall. They were struck by a clear association between these isotopes and El Nino, the weather cycle which occurs in pendulum swings every few years or so. The implication from this is that CO2 is swiftly cycled through land ecosystems, the researchers suggest. From that assumption comes the far higher estimate of annual carbon uptake.

Cantaloupe outbreak is deadliest in a decade Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON — Health officials say as many as 16 people have died from possible listeria illnesses traced to Colorado cantaloupes, the deadliest food outbreak in more than a decade. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday that 72 illnesses, including 13 deaths, are linked to the tainted fruit. State and local officials say they are investigating three additional deaths that may be connected. The death toll released by the CDC Tuesday — including newly confirmed deaths in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Texas — surpassed the number of deaths linked to an outbreak of salmonella in peanuts almost three years ago. Nine people died in that outbreak. The CDC said Tuesday that they have confirmed two deaths in Texas and one death each in in Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. Last week the CDC reported two
deaths in Colorado, four deaths in New Mexico, one in Oklahoma and one in Maryland. New Mexico officials said Tuesday they are investigating a fifth death, while health authorities in Kansas and Wyoming said they too are investigating additional deaths possibly linked to the tainted fruit. Listeria is more deadly than well-known pathogens like salmonella and E. coli, though those outbreaks generally cause many more illnesses. Twenty-one people died in an outbreak of listeria poisoning in 1998 traced to contaminated hot dogs and possibly deli meats made by Bil Mar Foods, a subsidiary of Sara Lee Corp. Another large listeria outbreak in 1985 killed 52 people and was linked to Mexicanstyle soft cheese. Listeria generally only sickens the elderly, pregnant women and others with compromised immune systems. The CDC said the median age of those sickened is 78 and that one in five who contract the disease can die.

And those might not be all that is lost, Commissioner David Stern warned, without real headway toward a new labor deal. “All I’d say to that is that there are enormous consequences at play here on the basis of the weekend,� Stern said Wednesday. “Either we’ll make very good progress, and we know what that would mean — we know how good that would be, without putting dates to it — or we won’t make any progress and then it won’t be a question of just starting the season on time, it will be a lot at risk because of the absence of progress.� Talks between negotiators ended after two days Wednesday so they could return home before summoning their respective bargaining committees to New York for the most important stretch of the lockout. Mercedes wants tighter control over RRA MERCEDES GP has called for a more hard line approach to ensure that all Formula 1 teams are abiding by the Resource Restriction Agreement, amid renewed controversy about potential overspending. All F1 outfits have signed up to abide by the RRA, which puts limit on the number of personnel they can have and how much they can spend over the course of a season. A recent benchmark study of teams’ activities by Dutch consultants Capgemini prompted fresh reports that Red Bull Racing had breached the agreement - but this was strongly denied by the team and there was no evidence to support such claims. However, Mercedes GP team principal Ross Brawn believes that investigations into teams need to go much further than simply defining their activities – and that a full audit of spending must be undertaken. “What we need with RRA is an independent audit of both the methodology and the numbers so we can all be comfortable,” explained Brawn, whose team downsized dramatically when Honda pulled out of F1 at the end of 2008. “We achieved that with the aero testing. We have a university in Switzerland that comes to look at all the teams, looks at
their CFD work, looks at their wind tunnel work and checks they are achieving the figures that they say they are. And we must achieve that with RRA - as it is the only way we can stop these accusations and innuendo. “What has been done so far is a benchmarking of the methodology and not benchmarking of the numbers. The process done so far is to check that all teams are interpreting the regulations in the same way, and it has been successful. But we believe it has to go deeper than that, and we need auditing of the numbers because it is such a competitive element of what we do. “Our cars are measured, they are weighed, and checked intermittently. The amount of money spent is a very strong influence for your competitiveness, and you need to have good control of it.” Brawn believes that the situation surrounding RRA is similar to that which F1 underwent several years with traction control – where teams were rumoured to be running illegal driver aids but it was never proved. “I think there is still work we need to do with RRA to get everybody comfortable,” he said. “It is a great initiative and teams
are working very well together, but this is a very competitive business so naturally the focus goes on the teams that are successful. I have had that experience myself. “We have to take an objective view. I think where we have to end up with the RRA is the ability to fully audit all the requirements of the RRA and when we reach that stage, everybody is going to be comfortable, then some of the innuendo and accusations can stop, which is what we want to do. “If you recall the days of traction control, people not knowing whether people did or did not have it, there were all sorts of accusations going around. And because we could not disprove it, somebody could come along and say ‘you have traction control’ and we could not disprove it until we got standard ECUs. about.” Simoncelli has become a MotoGP frontrunner this year, taking pole at Catalunya and Assen during a run of form that saw him qualify on the front row for six straight races. But he had difficult converting that speed into race results, amid a string of crashes and incidents, plus heavy censure from rivals. The 24-year-old ultimately steadied himself and finally took his maiden podium finish at Brno. Gresini said he was delighted that a new deal had been reached with Simoncelli and Honda. “Marco’s qualities as a rider, as a man and as an extroverted communicator, made us keen to continue our collaboration,” said the team boss. Simoncelli is currently eighth in the MotoGP standings with four rounds to go.
