‘Rogue One’ tops new releases to dominate holiday box office
LOS ANGELES — It was an intergalactic holiday at movie theaters as “Rogue One” blasted past a spate of new releases to hold onto the top spot at the weekend box office. The “Star Wars” story added another $96 million to its coffers over the four-day holiday period, according to studio estimates Monday. “The power of the ‘Star Wars’ brand made it the odds-on favorite to be the No. 1 film on Christmas weekend despite a massive amount of competition,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker comScore. That left the weekend’s many new releases in a race for second place. The animated animal musical “Sing” claimed that spot, debuting to $56 million. The Jennifer Lawrence-Chris Pratt space tale
“Passengers” opened in third place with $23.1 million, followed by the R-rated comedy “Why Him?” with $16.7 million. The video-game adaptation “Assassin’s Creed” debuted in fifth place with $15 million. “Star Wars” also dominated the holiday box office last year with “The Force Awakens.” “Mid-December is kind of a magic time to release a big franchise film,” Dergarabedian said, noting that the top-grossing films of all time, “Avatar” and “Titanic,” also opened in mid-December. Half a dozen other films either opened or expanded over the holi-
day weekend. Denzel Washington’s adaptation of August Wilson’s “Fences” expanded on Sunday, earning $11.37 million over the four-day weekend, good for sixth place. While still in limited release, the celebrated musical “La La Land” opened in 534 additional theaters and finished the weekend in eighth place. Also opening over the long holiday weekend: Pedro Almodovar’s “Julieta,” Martin Scorsese’s “Silence,” J.A. Bayona’s dark fantasy “A Monster Calls,” Ben Affleck’s “Live By Night” and the NASA drama “Hidden Figures.” “There were so many cinematic presents under the Christmas tree, it was hard to keep track,” Dergarabedian said. Six Indonesians found dead after being locked in bathroom
JAKARTA - Police in the Indonesian capital found on Tuesday six people, including a nine-year-old child, dead from suffocation in a tiny bathroom where armed robbers had locked them the previous day.
Petty crime is common in Jakarta, a teeming city of 10 million people, but violent crime including armed robbery is rare. Up to four intruders broke into the house in an upmarket neighbourhood on Monday, Jakarta police spokesman Argo Yuwono said. The robbers locked 11 people - including family members, maids and drivers - in the two metre by one metre (6.5 ft by 3.3 ft) bathroom and they were not found until early on Tuesday, Yuwono said. “They were carrying firearms and machetes,” Yuwono said of the robbers, citing a witness account. The five survivors were in critical condition and taken to hospital, he said. “For now, we have classified this case as a murder case. We cannot say a robbery case because our investigation so far reveals that nothing has been taken,” Colonel Argo Yuwono, Jakarta police spokesman, told the media at the crime scene packed with cameramen, reporters and onlookers. “There is no tampering on the house or the
DOORS,” he said, adding that investigators were working to find the motive. The dead victims were the owner of the house, identified by police as 59-year-old Dodi Triyono; two girls believed to be his daughters, 16-year-old Diona Arika Andra Puti and nine-year-old Dianita Gemma Dzalfayla; a friend of the girls identified as Amel, and two drivers of the family named as Yanto and Tasrok, reported Detik.com. Amel’s mother Rosy Herawati confirmed her loss in an interview with TVOne. Rosy said her last contact with her daughter was 2pm on Monday. Police did not disclose who the five surviving victims are, reports said. Col Argo said police would interview some of the surviving victims who were in better conditions. Witnesses said the intruders arrived at Mr Dodi’s house on Monday afternoon, and the victims were rescued and evacuated only at about 8am on Tuesday after a visiting friend of Mr Dodi’s noticed the main DOOR had been left open and heard voices crying for help. Some of those who died sustained some LIGHT bruises and there was no other cause of death besides suffocation, according to Inspector-General Iriawan. Mr Dodi was a property entrepreneur, MetroTV said, citing a friend of the man. (rtr)
