‘Star Wars’ smashes Christmas Day box office record

LOS ANGELES - The latest “Star Wars” film has smashed yet another box office record, raking in $49.3 million on Christmas Day in North America -- the highest total ever on the holiday, industry figures showed Saturday. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” easily bested the previous Christmas Day record take of $24.6 million set by “Sherlock Holmes” starring

Robert Downey, Jr, which opened on December 25, 2009. “’Star Wars’ continues to be a bright, shining beacon of light at the

box office,” Jeff Bock of industry tracker Exhibitor Relations told AFP by email. So far, “The Force Awakens” -- the highly anticipated seventh installment in the blockbuster space saga -- has taken in a whopping $890.3 million worldwide, with $440.4 million in the United States

alone, Bock said. The film has received mostly glowing reviews, and is being credited with breathing new life into the Hollywood juggernaut franchise launched by creator George Lucas in 1977. It had already set a number of other box office records -highest-grossing domestic opening

night, biggest domestic single-day sales and biggest global opening weekend. As far as all-time box office sales, two films by James Cameron hold the record -- “Avatar” ($2.79 billion) and “Titanic” ($2.19 billion) -- and it is expected that “The Force Awakens” might unseat both. (afp)

NEW YORK - Pop superstar Janet Jackson has announced a temporary halt to her global tour to undergo surgery for an unspecified condition, raising fears for her health. Jackson was due to resume her tour on January 9 in Denver and has dates across the United States, Canada and Europe lined up through late June. She did not give an exact date for resumption of her tour but promised she would reschedule all concerts and honor tickets.Jackson began her tour on August 31 in Vancouver, playing across North American along with several dates last month in Japan. She earlier postponed a handful of US shows to avoid strain on her voice. Jackson in October released “Unbreakable,” her first album since the death of her brother Michael in 2009. (afp)

Bieber: Fans should back rival charity song in UK No. 1 race LONDON — Justin Bieber is sharing some love with Britain’s National Health Service. The Canadian singer says he does not want to be No.1 on Britain’s Christmas charts, and has urged his fans to support a charity single instead. With just two days to go until Christmas Day, Bieber is narrowly ahead of a National Health Service choir in the race for the top spot — a popular annual competition in Britain. The pop star tweeted Wednesday: “For 1 week it’s ok not to be #1. Let’s do the right thing & help them win. It’s Christmas.” The Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Choir’s single “A Bridge Over You” was just several hundred sales behind Bieber’s “Love Yourself.” Proceeds from the choir’s single will go to British charities. Tourist shopped in Sindhu Traditional Market in Denpasar. Yearend is usually a blessing for those in the tourism business, but this is not always so, as evidenced by Denpasar’s hotel occupancy rates that have not increased this month.

Their ‘tour’ started at the Akasaka Karaoke venue on Jalan Teuku Umar and proceeded to the Puri Dalem Hotel at Sanur and ended at Grand Mirah on Jalan Kaliasem, Denpasar. General Manager of Akasaka, Putu Mangku Prastiawan, accompanied by the Manager of the Music Club, Putu Lawrence, said in recent days the number of visitors had not at all increased and so they decided against booking a big star for New Year’s eve celebrations. “In the past, all our packages have been booked for the week of Chritmas and New Year. After the recent gang incident on Jalan Teuku Umar, many people wanted to cancel their bookings, though we were able to convince some of our guests that there was no threat to their security,” said Putu Mangku. Entertainment venues are not the only places where the lack of tourists can be seen, Hoteliers also

consider that the number of tourists visiting Denpasar during the holidays falls short of expectations. In fact, I Gusti Ayu Forina S, head of Human Resources Development for Hotel Puri Dalem, said that their occupancy rates have dropped dramatically this year. “Right now, our occupancy rate is around 46 percent. It is unlikely that it will up beyond 50 percent,” she said. When asked about the cause of the decline in tourist visits to the city of Denpasar, Ayu Forina pointed to security and comfort as absolute necessities that are nonnegotiable. Joger Bumbung recognized by UNESCO

Salacious versions online threaten to tarnish image THE JOGED Bumbung Dance is one of the nine Balinese traditional dances that was recently recognized as an intangible world heritage by UNESCO. Unfortunately there are also innumerable ‘pornographic’ versions of the dance circulating ram-

pantly over the internet that threaten to tarnish the image of this beautiful dance. Clearly trying to all of these unsavoury videos deleted is close to impossible. “Dealing with the virtual world is tantamount to dealing with invisible

people. It will take a long time to rectify the situation and we have to realize that the world is changing,” said Balinese humanist, Kadek Wahyudita. Although Wahyudita admitted that the overly sexualised versions of Joged Bumbung videos cannot be deleted, he

suggested bombarding the internet with legitimate versions of this and other artistic and cultural practices, that reflect Bali’s identity. Continue to page 2 Digital ...
