Backstreet Boys singer sued over bar fight

In Oscars crisis, Chris Rock and a microphone loom large AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill, File

But despite constant clamorNEW YORK — When Chris Rock first hosted the Oscars in 2005, the four black actors nominated that year — Morgan Free- ing — and TMZ cameras chasing man, Don Cheadle, Sophie Okonedo and Jamie Foxx (twice!) him outside a comedy club over the weekend — Rock has been — didn’t escape his notice. “It’s like the Def Oscar Jam!” Rock exclaimed. The story will be slightly different this time around. When Rock strides onto the Dolby Theatre stage on Feb. 28, he’ll see no nominated African-American actors before him. He’ll instead be greeted by a Hollywood beset by a crisis over diversity that has led to calls for a boycott of the broadcast, spurred the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to rewrite its membership bylaws and even sparked pleas for Rock, himself, to pull out. In the ongoing fallout, Rock has loomed on the horizon like Judgment Day. But it’s unclear just what awaits the academy and Hollywood come show time. A reckoning? A catharsis? Awkward fits of laughter? Probably all of the above. What is certain is that a conflu-

ence of events has placed one of America’s most perceptive and sharp-tongued commentators on race smack dab in the middle of a storm that could hardly suit anyone better. It’s safe to say that no Academy Awards opening monologue has ever been more anticipated. The spotlight on Oscar night will be trained on no one — not Leonardo DiCaprio or Jennifer Lawrence — like it is on Rock. “This could be a defining moment for Chris Rock,” Cheadle told The Associated Press. “And I hope it is.” Cheadle is far from alone. In the turmoil that has enveloped the Academy Awards since a second straight year of white nominees filled the acting categories, everyone from Spike Lee to George Clooney has had their say on the issue.

mum. Other than a tweet in which he unveiled his first promo for the show —and referred to the Oscars as “the White BET Awards” — he has stayed quiet amid uproar all around him. Reginald Hudlin, who’s coproducing this year’s broadcast, sought to assure viewers, telling “Entertainment Tonight” that Rock is “hard at work” and that he had thrown out preparations and was now “writing a new show.” “And, yes, the academy is ready for him to do that,” Hudlin said. “They’re excited about him doing that.” But Rock’s publicist, Leslie Sloane, on Monday shot down Hudlin’s remarks, saying the comedian “has made no decisions about the content of the show.” The point was clear: No one is going to speak for Rock except Rock himself. “All will be revealed on February 28th,” said Sloane, ominously. MIAMI - A bouncer at a Florida bar has sued Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter for attacking and choking him, labeling the star “nothing more than a backstreet thug.” Skylar Carden, 21, filed the lawsuit Monday in a court in the Florida Keys, alleging Carter caused “bodily injury, mental anguish, pain and suffering,” attorney Mark DiCowden told AFP. Carter was arrested on January 13 after he and a friend were escorted, drunk, by security personnel outside Hog’s Breath Saloon in Key West. The singer was originally shown the door due to his “unruly and disrespectful” behavior, but he then became aggressive, beating and briefly choking Carden, according to the lawsuit. In court, Carter pleaded not guilty and was released on $1,500 bail. He broke his silence via a message on Twitter over the weekend. “I am human and at times it can be a struggle to balance a healthy lifestyle. I’m not perfect and for that I am sorry,” he wrote. “When we fall we have to get up and keep on walking. I hope

you stay by my side and continue to walk with me.” But Carden’s lawyer said that regardless of Carter’s celebrity status, the singer should respect other people’s rights, just like everyone else. “Nick Carter has shown the world that he is nothing more than a backstreet thug,” DiCowden wrote. “Carter’s backhanded apology in the form of a tweet was a crude attempt to control public relations and did nothing to address his remorse for the harm he caused Carden. “No amount of fame or fortune justifies Carter’s shameful and outrageous conduct. To send him that message and deter his misbehavior in the future, we will seek punitive damages against him as allowed by Florida law.” The Backstreet Boys achieved worldwide success in the 1990s and early 2000s as teen idols, with songs like “I Want It That Way,” “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” and “Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely.” He has also participated in the television game show “Dancing with the Stars.” (afp)

Amdal test for reclamation plan: January 29

Communities must remain critical and speak out

DENPASAR - The environmental impact assessment (Amdal) testing activity for the Benoa Bay reclamation plan will be held at Wiswasabha, the Governor of Bali’ office on Friday (Jan. 29), confirmed the Head of the Bali Environment Agency (BLH), Gede Suarjana on Tuesday (Jan. 26). “Consultants and the initiator will give presentations, relevant communities will give their response and the public will be able to provide their input,” he said.

People hold banner rejecting reclamation plan on Benoa Bay during a demonstration held in Ku ta Beach recently. The environmental impact assessment (Amdal) testing activity for the Benoa Bay reclamation plan will be held at Wiswasabha, the Governor of Bali’ office on Friday (Jan. 29).

Suarjana specified that those that have been invited to respond include: the communities that would be most affected by the reclamation project, customary leaders, religious leaders, subdistrict heads, headmen, NGOs, other experts and university academics. ForBALI coordinator, Wayan ‘Gendo’ Suardana, said that he received a written invitation from the Environmental Impact Analysis (Amdal) on Friday (Jan. 15), that included the Amdal documents regarding the Benoa Bay revitalization action plan and sea sand mining. “Actually it is a fairly difficult document to sift through. Is two weeks enough time? I don’t think it is. But the problem is that we have no choice but to accept it,” said Gendo. He also said that many things in the Amdal document still raise questions -primarily with regards to the magnitude of project’s scope. Many things seem odd and should be questioned during the meeting for the Amdal test. “However, we cannot say exactly how to do this now because we are still learning and exploring the documents,” Gendo explained. Most importantly, he said, the different communities involved, need to begin to address the issues objectively and cannot afford to remain silent. Addressing the issues must

continue to be carried out though peaceful means and people need to be involved in the environmental policy making process - especially with mega-projects like this reclamation plan, he said. Gendo asserted that people should be informed about the details of project developments particularly the Amdal, because this project has a big impact on the future of Bali. The future of the communities in the area of Benoa Bay is at stake also the interests of Balinese people as a whole. The investors in the Benoa Bay project not openly plan to create islands covering an area of some 700 hectares, but they also plan to build a variety if accommodations ranging from apartments, condotel, and villas, all the way up to four- and five-star hotels, not to mention the manpower that this project would absorb; 60 percent local workers and 40 percent non-local workers.
