LOS ANGELES - Art house audiences showed plenty of love for “To Rome With Love.” Woody Allen’s latest took in $379,371 from five screens in its debut, a whopping $75,874 per-screen average. The per-screen number for “To Rome” is the summer’s second-best, behind only “Moonrise Kingdom,” which opened in four theaters with a $130,749 average in May. Penelope Cruz, Alec Baldwin, Ellen Page and Jesse Eisenberg star in the Sony Classics film. Allen’s previous movie, “Midnight in Paris,” was released last summer and went on to gross $56 million, best-ever for an Allen film, and earn an Academy Award Best Picture nomination. “The Invisible War,” a documentary from Kirby Dick about rape in the U.S. military, made $4,900 on from four screens in its debut for Cinedigm. “Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” continued as the summer’s biggest breakout indie hit in its eighth week, taking in $1.6 million from 741 screens, a $2,179 per-screen average. The John Maddendirected tale of Brit retirees in India is sure to cross $40 million in the U.S. now - it’s at $38.3 million - and could break $50 million. NEW YORK — Country singer Billy Ray Cyrus is making his Broadway debut in “Chicago.” The singer of “Achy Breaky Heart” and father of Miley Cyrus is detouring from his Nashville roots in taking on the role of criminal lawyer Billy Flynn for a seven-week engagement beginning Nov. 5. Cyrus starred with his daughter in the hit TV series “Hannah Montana,” and has acted in TV movies on Lifetime and the Hallmark Channel. TABANAN - Determination of the agricultural area at Jatiluwih, Penebel, as a world cultural heritage (WCH) by UNESCO has not made the local farmers happy. Instead, they question about the contribution obtained from such a prestigious award. Until this moment, no single change is obtained by farmers. Secretary of Subak Jatiluwih, Semarajaya, affirmed that farmers in his territory had not owned a certainty related to the contribution obtained from the determination of

WCH. “Until this moment, there is no certainty about the benefits obtained by farmers in relation to WCH. We are also still working as usual,” he explained, Monday (Jun

25). According to him, farmers did not know much about the Jatiluwih WCH from the UNESCO. On that account, many farmers looked indifferent to the award. The man who fondly called Mr. Krishna explained that farmers simply expected the contributions of WCH because the farmland at Jatiluwih had something to do with the lives of residents. Total farmers in the region reached 395 people with an area of 303 hectares. Such amount was divided into 7 groups

of the subak. Since included in the WCH, the farmland of Jatiluwih was designated as sustainable agricultural land. In other words, farmers were prohibited from selling the land or building in the region. “This is what we are questioning. What is the concrete contribution?” questioned Semarajaya. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

QUITO, Ecuador — Giant tortoise experts from near and far have begun an autopsy of Lonesome George, whose failed efforts to reproduce made him a symbol of disappearing species. The Galapagos Island reptile was the last of the Pinta island giant tortoise subspecies and he was found dead in his pen on Sunday. He had become an ambassador of sorts for the archipelago off Ecuador’s coast whose unique flora and fauna helped inspire Charles Darwin’s ideas on evolution. Galapagos conservation official Washington Llerena says scientists suspect Lonesome George died of a heart attack. His was believed to be about 100 years old, not especially old for a giant tortoise. Scientists from the U.S. were aiding in the autopsy by videoconference.

THESSALONIKI, Greece — Archaeologists in Greece’s second-largest city have uncovered a 70-meter (230-foot) section of an ancient road built by the Romans that was the city’s main travel artery nearly 2,000 years ago. The marble-paved road was unearthed during excavations for Thessaloniki’s new subway system, which is due to be completed in four years. The road in the northern port city will be raised to be put on permanent display when the metro opens in 2016. The excavation site was shown to the public on Monday, when details of the permanent display project were also announced. Several of the large marble paving stones were etched with children’s board games, while others were marked by horse-drawn cart wheels. Also discovered at the site were remains of tools and lamps, as well as the bases of marble columns. Viki Tzanakouli, an archaeologist working on the project, told The Associated Press the Roman road

was about 1,800 years old, while remains of an older road built by the ancient Greeks 500 years earlier were found underneath it. “We have found roads on top of each other, revealing the city’s history over the centuries,” Tzanakouli said. “The ancient road, and side roads perpendicular to it appear to closely follow modern roads in the city today.” About 7 meters (23 feet) below ground in the center of the city, the ancient road follows in roughly the

same direction as the city’s modern Egnatia Avenue. The subway works, started in 2006, present a rare opportunity for archaeologists to explore under the densely populated city — but have also caused years of delays for the project. In 2008, workers on the Thessaloniki metro discovered more than 1,000 graves, some filled with treasure. The graves were of different shapes and sizes, and some contained jewelry, coins or other pieces of art.

Wuku Wayang lasts for a week according to pawukon calendar of Hindu community in Bali. According to Jro Mangku Pasek Sekalan Marga, I Ketut Arthana, the life of children born in wuku wayang would always be tempted by Bhatara Kala with the permission of Lord Shiva. As the son of Lord Shiva, Bhatara Kala in a manifestation of big giant would try to tempt the children with a variety of efforts. Well, to avoid the interference of Bhatara Kala, the children should be given exorcism rite by presenting a shadow puppet. The shadow puppet presented was not an ordinary one, but belonged to Wayang Sapuh Leger or Wayang Sudamala. Both types of shadow puppet were almost the same as the shadow puppet intended for evening entertainment. However, in the performance of shadow puppet for exorcism rite of children born in the wuku wayang would take special storyline and offerings. By and large, the story performed usually entitled Dewa Kala or Siwa Rare Kumara. Meanwhile, the Wayang Sudamala took the story Dewi Durga exorcised by Sahadeva. Jero Mangku Arthana said that children born in the wuku wayang should get an exorcism rite to release them from any danger. Otherwise, behavior of those children would be influenced by demonic behavior filled with evil passions. “If family is unable to organize the shadow puppet show, they can only invoke the holy water to purify the children from any temptation,” he said. The ritual was usually performed coinciding with the otonan after the child was 6 months old (210 days) according to the Balinese calendar. The ritual was held in the morning, while the shadow puppet show was held in the evening. Although functioning as a ritual puppet, in the performance the puppeteer remained to accentuate the quality. Well, after the puppet show was over, the child was then given an exorcism rite. Aside from functioning to exorcize children born in wuku wayang, the shadow puppet show was also held for other ceremonial events. For example, wayang lemah was presented to accompany some ceremonies (Deva Yajña, Rishi Yajña, Manushya Yajña, Pitri Yajña and Bhuta Yajña) that put more emphases on a sacrifice. The storyline presented was adjusted to the type of ceremony held. Well, to distinguish the shadow puppet for ritual and entertainment, the Hindu community in Bali classified the shadow puppet show into three, namely the performance for wali (complementary ceremony), bebali (supporting the ceremony) and balih-balihan (entertainment). For clarity, we are waiting for the autopsy result and will again be cross checked with witnesses,” Sarjana stated. As told before, victim was found dead but unsure if he was killed or not even though Sanglah Hospital checking stated it was due to being killed. School children of Pesinggahan endanger life to amass oblation remnants SCHOOL holidays have arrived. Many school children take advantage of their school holidays with a variety of activities. On one side, some students fill in their holidays by learning and disporting themselves, while some others used it to search for fortune as carried out by children of Pesinggahan village, Dawan, Klungkung. To fill in their holidays, they scavenged the oblation remnants after people organized nyekah ritual on the beach near Goa Lawah Beach. What did their activity look like?

Most children took advantage of their holidays by disporting themselves, but students from Pesinggahan village did not. In fact, they intermingled with people organizing a ritual on the beach for scavenging sustenance. Understandably, the Goa Lawah itself has been known to residents as a place to perform nyegara gunung ritual (a procession after cremation). In performing the ritual, people who came to Goa Lawah Temple would bring a set of oblations. Such moment was surely taken advantage by children of Pesinggahan village. Both students of primary school and secondary school filled in their holidays by looking for fortune. Aside from helping their parents to trade, some children scavenged the oblation remnants. By doing so, they could take some usable contents

of the oblation such as perforated coins, live duck and chicken used in pekelem rituals as well as contents of pejati oblation like oil, eggs and rice disposed by residents after performing the ritual on Goa Lawah Beach. Uniquely, in collecting those remnants they should mutually scramble. Even, they should endanger their life against the large waves of Goa Lawah Beach. To get the contents of oblation like duck and chicken after being used as pekelem, they had to swim out to the sea and chased the ducks. Not infrequently, they should also fight one another as performed by a child named Mudana. The student of SMPN 2 Dawan secondary school admitted if he only would like to help his parents to earn money. “Yes, we just want to make money, sir, while helping my parents,” said

Mudana when met on Goa Lawah Beach, Monday (Jun 25). To be able to get money, Mudana said it was not easy. He should scramble with his friends to get the ducks, chickens and perforated coins disposed by residents after performing the rituals. Even, on unlucky day, Mudana claimed to get nothing. “The duck can be re-sold for IDR 30,000. But, I rarely get the duck as having to scramble,” he explained. In line with Mudana, Wayan Yeni Artini, a student of the SDN 1 Pesinggahan elementary school, and Komang Ayu Nita also helped their parents earn money on Goa Lawah Beach while filling in school holidays. Yeni herself claimed to only collect the contents of oblation such as perforated coins and pejati oblation disposed to the sea by residents. According to her, the results obtained were pretty good. Yeni herself claimed to earn IDR 20,000 per day from collecting eggs, coconut, rice and perforated coins. “Yes, everything will be given to my parents for purchasing rice,” she said briefly while scrambling to get perforated coins discarded by residents. BEIJING - Chinese authorities are forcing back into Myanmar some of the ethnic Kachin refugees who have fled into China trying to escape civil war, and Beijing is denying basic care to many who remain, a human rights group said on Tuesday. Myanmar’s government is in talks with Kachin rebels, and more than a dozen armed or political groups, to try to end all its decadesold conflicts. The Kachin conflict, which flared up in the middle of 2011 after a 17-year truce, has pushed up to 10,000 people to seek refuge across the border in the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan.

New York-based Human Rights Watch said many of these people have little access to proper sanitation, shelter, healthcare or schools for their children. Others have been detained, refused entry to China or even forced back into the conflict zone in the former Burma, it said in a report. “The Chinese government has generally tolerated Kachin refugees

staying in Yunnan, but now needs to meet its international legal obligations to ensure refugees are not returned and that their basic needs are met,” said Sophie Richardson, the human rights group’s China director. “China has no legitimate reason to push them back to Burma or to leave them without food and shelter.” Human Rights Watch said it had documented two cases involving some 300 people who were ordered to return to Myanmar, and others who were sent back into the conflict zone after being turned away at the border.

South Korea’s navy is to build an advance base on a frontline island to bolster defences near the disputed Yellow Sea border with North Korea, officials said on Tuesday. The navy has been given local government approval to reclaim 23,489 square metres (250,000 square feet) at Baengnyeong island to build the base, said an official at Incheon city, west of Seoul, which oversees the islands. The defence ministry said the navy would build a dock for small warships but declined to give details. Yonhap news agency said the new base would include barracks and a training ground and accommodate about 100 troops. It would be completed by the end of 2014 at a cost of 42.5 billion won ($36.6 million). Baengnyeong is one of five South Korean islands near the boundary drawn by United Nations forces after the 1950-53 war. Pyongyang refuses to accept the line and insists it should be moved southwards. The border was the scene of deadly naval clashes in 1999, 2002 and 2009. In November 2010 the North shelled one of the five islands, Yeonpyeong, and killed four South Koreans including two civilians. The South has since strengthened manpower and weaponry on the islands to forestall any fresh attack. North Korea has reportedly completed a base for troop-carrying hovercraft at Koampo, 50 kilometres (31 miles) north of Baengnyeong.

Auditors from the European Union, IMF and European Central Bank postponed a visit to Greece originally set to begin Monday due to the health problems of Greek leaders. No new date has been set. The government in Nicosia has faced difficulties with public finances while the country’s banks took a major hit from the writedown of Greek bonds.

Abu Hamza, also known as Sayed Zabiuddin, an Indian-born member of the Pakistani militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba, was detained at Delhi international airport on June 21 when he arrived from the Middle East. Hamza was allegedly one of the handlers based in the Pakistani city Karachi, who issued instructions by telephone to the 10 Islamist gunmen as they stormed two luxury hotels, a Jewish centre, a restaurant and a train station in Mumbai. “The Delhi police has done a magnificent job. I am sure that the investigations will take place and we will wait till the investigations,” India’s External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna told reporters. Hamza, who has used a string of aliases, had been living in Saudi Arabia in recent years and is now being held in police custody in Delhi, the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency reported.

Indian media citing police sources said that Hamza was aged 30 and came from the western state of Maharashtra, of which Mumbai is the capital. Pakistani national Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, the only gunman caught alive during the 60-hour assault on Mumbai in November 2008, was handed down a death sentence by the Bombay High Court last year. Lawyers prosecuting Kasab have said that Hamza taught the gunmen some Hindi and that his voice can be heard on taped conversations with the attackers during the carnage. India blames the Lashkar-e-Taiba militant outfit, which is banned in Pakistan, for training, equipping and financing the Mumbai gunmen with support from “elements” in the Pakistan military. Pakistan has indicted seven alleged perpetrators over the attacks but their trial, which began in 2009,

has been beset by numerous delays triggering Indian accusations that the process is a sham. The United States, which lost six citizens in the Mumbai attacks, said it had a “strong interest” in the prosecution of the perpetrators of the assault. “We want to see all of them brought to justice,” State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters. JAKARTA - The wife of book-bomb convict Pepi Fernando was sentenced to two years in jail on Monday for withholding information about the terror plot. The chief judge of the West Jakarta District Court, Moestofa, said Deni Carmelita had been found guilty of violating Article 16 in conjunction with Article 7 of the anti-terrorism law of 2003. “Deni Carmelita has violated Article 13A by hiding information about a crime and Article 22A and 22C on prevention and obstruction of an investigation,” he said. Though she has three young children, the incriminating factor is that she has kept secret information about her husband`s involvement in the bombing, Moestofa added. The sentence was milder than the prosecutor`s demand for 2.6 years in jail. Deni, through her lawyer, Nural HN, accepted the verdict. Pepi Fernando had earlier been sentenced to 18 years in jail though the prosecutor had demanded life in prison. “Pepi Fernando has been found guilty of committing terrorism,” chief judge Moestofa had said when reading out the verdict in the West Jakarta District Court on March 5.

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Air Force (AU) and the United States Air Force (USAF) are organizing a joint exercise on Monday at South Terminal, Halim Perdanakusuma Airbase, East Jakarta. The exercise will be held until Friday (June 29) under the name “Cope West”. Fifty soldiers from AU and 80 soldiers from USAF will attend the drill. At the beginning of the exercise, at least 28 troops from Paskhas AU will take part in a static plunging military action by using two units of USAF type A Hercules C-130. Halim Perdanakusuma Airbase Commander, Colonel Ardhi Tjahjoko, said the activities carried out on Monday included a parachute dropping static and personnel to the Air Force Detachment in Gorda Serang. “We have also common practice for dropping logistics, powerful packing techniques for the benefit of dropping the logistics and personnel,as well as the exercise `Free-fall` and class discussions,” Ardhi said. According to Ardhi, the joint exercises have been taking place since 2009. “Most of the exercises held today have largely been implemented by the Air Force. The exercise is to expedite and hone existing skills,” said Ardhi. USAF Cope West Detachment Commander Lieutenant Colonel Rick Richard said co-operation with the Indonesian Air Force is considered very important to sharpen the ability of the USAF and the Air Force. “Indonesia is a very strategic and important country. MOSCOW - Russian soccer chief Sergei Fursenko quit his post on Monday following Russia’s disappointing showing at Euro 2012. Fursenko, who also sits on the UEFA executive board, resigned after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin. “I would like to apologise to our fans for such a result. I have taken a difficult decision - to step down as head of the Russian Football Union (RFU),” Fursenko told his close friend Putin, the Kremlin said. Fursenko has been heavily criticised for the team’s poor showing at the tournament in Poland and Ukraine, where they failed to advance past the group stage following a 1-0 upset by unfancied Greece in their final Group A match. Fursenko, 58, was appointed as the RFU boss in February 2010 after working as the president of Russian Premier League club Zenit St Petesburg for four years. He was largely responsible for hiring Dutchman Dick Advocaat as Russia coach in 2010 after deciding against extending a contract of fellow-Dutchman Guus Hiddink, who led the Russians to the Euro 2008 semi-finals. The team then failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. Fursenko’s resignation was greeted with mixed reviews from Russian soccer experts. GDANSK - Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger should be able to shake off a nagging ankle injury in time to play in the Euro 2012 semi-final against Italy in Warsaw on Thursday, goalkeeping coach Andreas Koepke said. The influential Schweinsteiger, who suffered the injury in February, has missed the last two days of training. “He does have a minor problem with his ankle. He did not train for two days and treated it intensively,” Koepke said on Monday. “Today however he is expected to return to training and should be ready to play on Thursday.” Schweinsteiger, who has started all four of Germany’s games at the tournament, said the pain in his ankle had robbed him of some of his speed and movement. “It is about small movements and explosive power,” the player said this week. “To be honest it is worrying.” It is unclear if he will be in the starting lineup on Thursday as Germany eye a spot in the tournament final on July 1 in Kiev and a shot at their first trophy since 1996. “Bastian is a world class player and he is a leading player in our team,” said midfielder Mesut Ozil. “I hope he can be fit in time for the game.”
