Review: A cool concept lost in execution in ‘Brightburn’

“Brightburn “ is a one idea movie. What if a baby from another planet crash lands on earth and is adopted and raised by a nice childless couple living on a farm? This kid doesn’t get hurt, never bleeds and, right around puberty starts to discover that he has superhuman strength too. At this point you’re probably thinking that you’ve heard this one before, right? Sure, everyone knows about Superman. But “Brightburn” twists that hero origin story and wonders what would happen if this alien child was not a good person. This is a kind of bad seed with superhero powers and it doesn’t bode well for all those around him.

It’s an interesting premise, certainly, but the movie around it is wholly unexceptional and rushes through key set up that might make the audience actually care for the characters in order to get to the sadistic gore. The film introduces Tori (Elizabeth Banks) and Kyle Breyer (David Denman) in their bedroom, surrounded by fertility books and talking about conceiving when a fiery object crash-lands in their field. The filmmakers must assume everyone coming in knows the basic premise because it does nothing to help explain, cutting immediately to grainy home videos showing a little boy growing up surrounded by love. By this point you feel about as attached to the Breyer family as you might the family in a cereal commercial. When the montage ends, Brandon Breyer (Jackson A. Dunn) is about to turn 12. He’s a smart kid, far beyond those in his class, and he knows it. Although an outsider with his peers, the positive reinforcement he receives from his teacher, his mom and a pretty girl in his class go to his head and he starts believing he’s superior to everyone. So you can only imagine what happens when a strength component and some demonic voices are added to the mix — a supervillain is born, and he is not messing around. This kid goes from a little quirky to supremely evil and merciless in no time at all. But this is a frustrating evolution to watch, especially considering all the denial that’s happening around him. When the adults are

Race to lead Britain out of EU pits old foes

LONDON - The race to become Britain’s next premier heated up on Sunday as Environment Secretary Michael Gove joined a crowded field of hopefuls with competing visions of how to finally pull their divided country out of the EU. Gove’s bid for the leadership in the aftermath of the 2016 Brexit referendum scuppered the chances of his one-time ally Boris Johnson, who is also running this time around and is seen as the current favourite.

This image released by Sony Pictures shows Jackson A. Dunn in a scene from Screen Gems’ “Brightburn.” witness to some of the disturbing behavior, they chalk it up to puberty. And Tori gets the most thankless job of all as the mother whose unconditional love and support for her son quickly becomes a full on character flaw, since the film has never really earned the audience’s empathy. “Brightburn” was conceived by Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, the brother and cousin of “Guardians of the Galaxy” maestro James Gunn who hopped aboard to produce with David Yarovesky, another Gunn friend, at the helm. Much is being made of James Gunn’s

association, naturally, because of the goodwill he’s rightfully earned from the endlessly charming “Guardians” franchise. But none of that charm exists here. This is a return to the gritty, sci-fi horror he came of age with. But there’s not much to grab on to, as the situation in Brightburn, which is the name of the town, devolves from bad to worse to entirely hopeless. And the excessive gore and carnage is deranged. The faint at heart might want to go in with an empty stomach, or a blindfold and some ear plugs for when things get really gnarly.

Perhaps I’m expecting too much from a high-concept summer horror, but I couldn’t help but think of how well a film like “Hereditary” (which was also very bleak) did in making you care about the family at the center of it. It’s too bad, too, because “Brightburn” was a good idea. Unfortunately the creativity stopped there. “Brightburn,” a Sony Pictures release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “horror violence/bloody images, and language.” Running time: 90 minutes. One and a half stars out of four. (ap)

A combination of pictures created in London on May 26, 2019 shows recent pictures of the eight contenders declared as of May 26 to replace Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May when she resigns on June 7: (top L-R) Britain’s Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, former foreign secretary Boris Johnson, Britain’s Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Secretary Michael Gove, former Brexit secretary Dominic Raab, (bottom L-R) Britain’s International Development Secretary Rory Stewart, former works and pensions secretary Esther McVey, former leader of the House of Commons Andrea Leadsom, and Britain’s Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock, all pictured in Downing Street, central London.

Theresa May’s resignation announcement on Friday drastically raised the chances of Britain crashing out of the Europea Union without a deal on October 31 -- the current deadline set by EU leaders. Some of the eight contenders to replace May have said they will seek to negotiate changes to a draft divorce deal struck with the EU last year but would be prepared to proceed with a no-deal Brexit if refused. The EU has said it is not prepared to renegotiate the terms of the deal. A no-deal Brexit would face fierce opposition in parliament, including from MPs in the ruling Conservative Party who backed staying in the EU. Finance minister Philip Hammond on Sunday warned he might even be prepared to take the drastic step of voting to bring down a future Conservative government in order to avoid no-deal. He told the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show that leaving the EU without a deal would have “very significant economic and fiscal impact on the country”. “It would challenge not just me but many of my colleagues,” Hammond said. - Deal or no deal May is bowing out with her legacy in tatters and the country in agony over what to do about the voters’ decision to abandon the European project after more than four decades. Former foreign minister Johnson said on Friday in Switzerland: “We will leave the EU on October 31, deal or no deal”. Former Brexit secretary Dominic Raab, an even more committed eurosceptic, has echoed that position. “We’d be willing to walk away from the negotiations,” he told Andrew Marr. Esther McVey, another contender, set out a similar position. “We won’t be asking for any more extensions,” she said. Raab and Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt announced their candidacies in the Sunday papers. Hunt had campaigned against Brexit in 2016 but has since reversed his stance. Gove confirmed his intention on Sunday, promising to unite the Conservatives. Former House of Commons leader Andrea Leadsom, whose resignation on Thursday pushed May towards stepping down, has also confirmed she will run. Eruption of Mount Agung

Magma still moves to surface and eruption still continues

AMLAPURA - Mount Agung recently continues to erupt. This highest mountain in Bali returns to experience major eruption on Friday (May 24). It occurred along with a throw of lava as far as three kilometers. As a result of the eruption, a number of areas exposed to sand rain as experienced by Besakih village. Chief of Besakih customary village, Jro Mangku Widiartha, stated on Saturday (May 25) the eruption last Friday caused Besakih village to get exposed to ash rain. The ash rain hitting was quite thick including the Besakih Temple was also exposed to ash rain. “Well, yesterday (Friday—Ed) there was ash rain. The intensity was quite thick. But it only happened for a while, not so long. Residents do not have to panic because they used to face eruption. In essence, the people of Besakih are conducive,” he affirmed. Widiartha added that for the time being, the exposure to ash rain due to eruption is still attached to the leaves and in the temples of Besakih. Although remaining to attach, no cleanup activity has been done to the ashes. “The ashes still attach to leaves and people’s house. Besides, the ashes are still attached to temple shrines. But at Besakih the ashes are not very thick. Right now, it has begun to absorb with dew,” he said. Meanwhile, Devy Kamil Syahbana, Subdivision Head of the Eastern Territory Volcano Mitigation, explained that eruption of Mount Agung continues to come forward because until now the movement of magma in the

depths to the surface is still happening. When being viewed, the eruptions that occurred on May 12, 18 and 24 had the same interval of eruption, namely 6 days with the same eruptive characteristics. “Of the three eruptions, the incandescent lava was also in the range of 3 kilometers and there was no increase. So, based on the facts we conclude that until now there has not been a significant increase in activity. We are still look at the future development whether the eruption will regularly happen or not. If it remains to erupt, and there is no increase in the extent of the incandescent lava, it will be good because the accumulation of pressure is almost the same,” explained Devy Kamil Syahbana. Meanwhile, the Operations Manager of Agung Besakih Tourist Object, Jro Mangku Ngawit, explained that after being exposed to ash rain he will spray the ashes on the road so that it will not disturb the activities of residents and tourists visiting Besakih. Ngawit added that tourist visits, including the pilgrims wishing to say prayers, are not disturbed because they IBP/kmb41 are still running normally. “Everything is normal. There is no problem,” As a result of the eruption, a number of areas exposed to sand rain as experienced by explained Mangku Ngawit. (kmb41) Besakih village.

Bali free from malaria since 2014

Regional leaders must be committed to eliminating cases

DENPASAR - Bali has eliminated malaria cases since 2014. The existing malaria cases can be controlled. Nevertheless, it is inevitable there are imported malaria cases brought by migrants from outside Bali. Strong commitment from regional leaders is needed to eliminate the malaria cases.

ISTANBUL - It’s already one of the world’s most original commutes -- the ferry trip between Istanbul’s European and Asian sides gives a daily quarter of a million passengers unforgettable views on their way to work. Now the Turkish city is offering music to offset the seascapes, and for the amateur musicians providing it, it’s a chance to make some crucial money in difficult economic times. The musicians work hard to ensure their music reflects Istanbul’s unique position as a city straddling East and West. “We travel back and forth between the two continents and we try to express emotions sparked by the two cultures: a kind of fusion, a synthesis,” Oguzhan Erdem, one of the ferry musicians, told AFP. Until recently, ferry musicians played without authorisation, but city authorities realised they were missing an opportunity and launched a project to make them an official part of the experience. Erdem plays the Turkish ney reed flute, an instrument traditionally used by Sufis, a mystical

branch of Islam, while his band mate plays a Western-style keyboard. “It’s merging the East with the West,” said Erdem. - ‘Like being in a movie’In total, 82 musicians work on the intra-city line from 9:00 am until the last ferry at 1:00 am. Ferry musicians rely on the tips to make their living and it has offered a lifeline for those struggling with Turkey’s economic downturn. Erdem, who also plays in the streets and with his band “DoguBang”, had failed to find work as an interior designer. “The job market is so bad. When I was brooding over what I will do, I saw a young girl singing in the ferry one day and asked myself ‘why don’t I give it a try’,” he said. He has now been playing the ney on ferries for the past nine

months. Istanbul is full of buskers -both Turkish and foreign -- particularly on its busy shopping hub of Istiklal Avenue. Eren Koc, who plays the keyboard, is a sculptor by profession and found himself playing on the ferries after visiting the city for one of his exhibitions. “There are interesting moments on the ferries. When applause suddenly breaks out or some people stand up and dance -- it is like being in a movie,” he said. For some commuters, it can be a truly emotional experience after a hard day at work. “The tunes speak to my soul and rest my mind. It takes me back to the past,” said Nimet, with tears in her eyes as she listened to the ney.

“Like the water flowing in the Bosphorus, it is triggering a flow of emotions inside,” she said, wistfully. Erdem is happy to inspire people. “In the evenings people leave work and return to their home. They empty their mind, reach a kind of serenity. I see many sleeping in peace. This is a source of great pleasure for me,” he said. - Recruiting Tunc Baydar, coordinator of the project for the municipality, said musicians playing in an unauthorised fashion had previously caused problems for the crew and security personnel. “We kicked off the ‘Music on the Ferry’ project in 2016 so that we could create an environment for those musicians to play in the

ferry with permission, more comfortably,” he said. “We have turned the ferry musicians into part of our brand.” Baydar said that they were always on the lookout for new talented musicians. “We watch their videos on social media. We’ve even begun recruiting conservatoire students.” Many world capitals have great buskers -- and some have even become megastars like Ed Sheeran -- but few cities offer as stunning a backdrop. “We listen to music in the metros in Europe but it’s so beautiful on the sea,” said Berker Colak, a tourist from Germany who came to Istanbul with his fiance. “The seagulls and the music create a really authentic ambiance, a real harmony.”

Head of Bali Health Agency, I Ketut Suarjaya, stated that in 2019, there are 4 cases of imported malaria in Bali. Meanwhile, in 2018 there were 13 cases of imported malaria. All of them were from outside Bali, coming to Bali and living in Bali. Of the 13 cases in 2018, 4 cases were positive for malaria. Suarjaya added that it is not a new case, but an old case that relapses again. The case was found in Karangasem, Klungkung and Buleleng and part of Jembrana. “Indeed, we cannot avoid imported cases as it is brought by migrants,” he said during the commemoration of the World Malaria Day at Kertalangu, Denpasar, Bali, recently. The efforts carried out are by finding the cases of both the active and passive ones as well as doing intensive detection and treatment. “We also suspect fever cases where one of them is malaria,’ he added. In addition to population movements, in Bali there is also a source of vector, namely the Anopheles mosquito. Then, the vector eradication is carried out like eradicating mosquito nests (PSN), giving larvacides especially for the areas with a large number of lagoons, such as the excavated or quarry area. The areas with the most malaria cases are Karangasem, Klungkung,

Buleleng, and parts of Jembrana and migrants from outside Bali are also potential to cause new cases. “But in the meantime, we have been able to maintain this elimination certificate by controlling vectors and diseases,” he concluded while mentioning the small Bali Annual Parasite Incidence (API) namely at 0.002. Director of Prevention and Eradication of Disease (P2P0 at Ministry of Health, Anung Sugihantono, said the commemoration of the World Malaria Day falls on April 25. This year the commemoration of the World Malaria Day was held in Bali because Bali has achieved malaria elimination. Nevertheless, Bali Province continues to carry out the efforts to maintain the status of elimination. Bali and other provinces are expected to continuously inspire other provinces that have not eliminated malaria in order to continue trying to eliminate it. Out of 514 districts / cities of 34 provinces, 285 districts and cities of 29 provinces have achieved the status of malaria elimination. Indonesia faces a big challenge for malaria elimination because there are still five provinces having not eliminated malaria, namely Papua, West Papua, Maluku, North Maluku, NTT, where none of the cities have eliminated malaria cases.

Minister of Health, Nila F. Moeloek Through the national theme namely Malaria-Free—National Achievement, the target is that Indonesia is free from malaria in 2030. On that day was also carried out the kick-off of the Java-Bali regional assessment in signing the commitment to malaria elimination. The reading was done by the governor of Bali. In addition, it was resumed with the reading and signing of the commitment by the regents and mayors posing the recipients of malaria elimination certificate. A total of 11 districts selected from 7 provinces received the certificate. They include West Aceh, Bungo Jambi, Muaro Jambi,

East Tanjung Jabung, West Tanjung Jabung, East Luhu, West Lampung, Cilacap, Kebumen and Toli – Toli in Central Sulawesi Minister of Health, Nila F. Moeloek, stated that in eradicating malaria, the commitment of regional government must be strong. He hoped the Java-Bali region will all be free from malaria so as to be respected by the world. With this effort, Indonesia will show off that it does not keep silent in the elimination of malaria. “If Indonesia is not free from malaria, then the Asia-Pacific region cannot be free of malaria as well,” he said. In Indonesia, there are still five

IBP/net

districts / cities that have not been free from malaria because their geography is difficult. In eliminating malaria cases, the culture of maintaining environmental cleanliness and the behavior must also be synchronous. Currently, 40 percent of the existing diseases are caused by environment, 30 percent by human behavior, and 10 percent by heredity. To be able to free a region from malaria, a strategy is needed such as cooperating with village-commissioned military officers (Babinsa), PKK, et cetera. Promotional and educational efforts must also be intensified as well. (kmb42)

Pertamina alerts RAFI Taskforce

During Eid, fuel and LPG consumption predicted to increase

DENPASAR - Based on distribution data for the Bali Region, fuel consumption during the Eid is predicted to increase by 2-4 percent on day three before the Eid, smaller than in Java with a magnitude of 7-10 percent. This happens because Bali is not a homecoming destination, but a tourist destination. As for LPG consumption in Bali, it is predicted there will be a 3-percent increase in 3-kg LPG from the average daily consumption of 630 MT (metric tons). To anticipate a surge in demand, Pertamina has prepared the RAFI Taskforce. Unit Manager Communication and CSR of Pertamina MOR V, Rustam Aji, stated that in order to anticipate the increase in demand for fuel and LPG supply, Pertamina has established a Ramadan and Eid

Al-Fitr (RAFI) Taskforce 2019. The taskforce has been on duty since day fifteen before (May 21) up to day fifteen after the Eid. The Taskforce plays a special role in monitoring and coordinating fuel and LPG distribution starting from stock strengthening, smooth distribution on the highway to monitoring conditions in the field. Thus, the availability of fuel and LPG in the community can continue to be fulfilled. He continued that in normal conditions, the average normal consumption of Gasoline products (Premium, Pertalite and Pertamax Series) amounts to 2,075 KL (kilo liters) per day, while the average daily consumption of Gasoil (Solar, Dexlite and Pertamina Dex) amounts to 525 KL. “Although there is an increase on

holiday, during the taskforce on duty, it is overall relatively stable,” he explained. The fuel needs are served by 191 gas stations supplied from 2 (two) existing fuel terminals in Bali, namely the Sanggaran Fuel Terminal and the Manggis Fuel Terminal. Pertamina optimizes the stock and distribution from the two fuel terminals. In addition, it alerts 82 tank trucks with a total capacity of 1,520 KL, and 223 tank attendants that are on standby to ensure fuel can reach customers. Meanwhile, in anticipation of a surge in LPG demand, Pertamina has increased the availability of LPG stock that normally lasts 3-4 day to 4-7 days by adding stocks at the Manggis-Karangasem Depot and Sanggaran-Denpasar Depot. Pertamina also coordinates with LPG distributors to activate agencies

and standby bases that remain open to serving on holidays. In Bali, the number of alert agents reaches 22 agencies for 3-kg LPG, and the 3-kg LPG alert base reaches 108 bases, including gas stations that provide 3-kg LPG. Meanwhile for Avtur (Aviation Turbine Fuel), in Bali Pertamina has alerted the Ngurah Rai Aircraft Refuel Depot (DPPU). Pertamina predicts that Avtur consumption during the assignment of RAFI Taskforce will increase to 2,425 KL from the normal consumption averagely reaching 2,265 KL. DPPU Ngurah Rai has 7 tank storage facilities with a capacity of 24,300 KL supplied from Cilacap Refinery Unit IV and Balikpapan Refinery Unit V. DPPU Ngurah Rai is also equipped with 7 refueling units that are always on standby to

meet flight needs both domestic and international flight. In addition to DPPU Ngurah Rai, the Manggis Fuel Terminal also has an Avtur storage tank with a capacity of 40,000 KL. Pertamina Marketing Operation Region (MOR) V continues to strive to meet the needs of the community’s fuel and LPG at the moment of Ramadhan and Eid al-Fitr 2019, one of which is by organizing the taskforce for 24 hours. For smooth distribution process, Pertamina also coordinates with related agencies such as Downstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BPH Migas), National Police, Transportation Agency, Energy and Mineral Resources Agency, and Pertamina partners such as National Oil and Gas Entrepreneurs Association (Hiswana Migas). Modi kept his job, Indians worry about theirs

Canggu-Tibubeneng lacks of supporting infrastructure

MANGUPURA - The Canggu and Tibubeneng areas in North Kuta remain to lack street lighting infrastructure. Besides, this tourism area is also lacking in pedestrians as well as having narrow roads and minimal parking spaces. A community leader from Canggu, I Gede Aryantha, did not deny that Canggu area and Tibubeneng have very little arrangement of tourism supporting infrastructure. Road access is narrow to tourist objects so that it frequently results in congestion, pavement of pedestrians, especially those towards the beach, is not yet adequate, street lighting is minimal and coastal arrangement is minimal as well.

“This gives impression of slow response to the arrangement of infrastructure whereas visitors are crowded and tourist accommodation has also emerged in numbers,’ explained Aryanta, on Friday (May 24). This legislator of the Badung House of Representatives hoped the regional government may not discriminately provide the arrangement for tourist attractions. Moreover, Badung’s regionally gener-

ated revenue dominantly originates from tourism sector. “Canggu and Tibubeneng have the potential to support the revenue. We do hope the Tibubeneng, Canggu and surrounding areas should immediately be considered,” he affirmed. Separately, Head of the Badung Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency, IB Surya Suamba, agreed on the matter. The infrastructure in tourism area of Canggu and Tibubeneng are inadequate. Unfortunately, there is no agenda of arrangement for this year. “There is no arrangement. Indeed the infrastructure is inad-

equate. For instance, pedestrian facilities do not yet exist. Street lighting is also inadequate. Certainly, this will get priority from the Badung district government,” he explained. Regarding street lighting, the Head of the Badung Transportation Agency, AA Rai Yuda Darma, admitted the street lighting for the Canggu and Tibubeneng area had been planned in 2019. “We have made preparation of Detail Engineering Design (DED) this year,” he affirmed. Regarding the location, this bureaucrat from Kerobokan, North Kuta, admitted that it is currently

being surveyed by partners. However, it will clearly be prioritized on the tourism road section because the area has a lot of tourist accommodation and coastal tourism objects. “The number in detail will appear on the DED after it has been finalized. Currently, we have not yet obtained the data, and we’ll just know it after getting the final because it is currently being processed by consultant,” he said, while adding that it will be realized after finalizing the DED and the procurement or auction will be possibly held in July - August 2019. (kmb27)

While nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi won a new five-year term promising to step up his campaign for a “new India”, 18-year-old Ahmed is pessimistic about getting a new job. “There are so many people in Delhi and the competition is intense,” said Ahmed, dressed like the other students in a black-andwhite uniform at the three-month community course run in a police station in Old Delhi. “I know this stint may not be enough for me to get a job but I am trying my best.” Modi came to power in 2014 promising jobs, but delivering on that has been a challenge. And as soon as the election euphoria settles, Modi’s government will have to find ways to boost investment and revive manufacturing to create new jobs. Like Ahmed, most of the other 60 students at the government-sponsored “skill development” classes at the Old Delhi police station, all from poor families, were also apprehensive. Nudrat Akram, 19, signed up for the course because her family could not afford to pay for higher education. “I want a job in the retail sector where I can earn 10,000 rupees ($143) a month,” Akram said, as she practised speaking English with pretend customers. - More jobs, more debt India’s conservative prime min-

ister came to power in 2014 on a pro-business platform, promising to create 10 million jobs a year. The world’s fastest-growing major economy has grown about 7 percent a year since, but jobs have been elusive. The promise was barely mentioned in Modi’s triumphant reelection campaign. Nearly two-thirds of India’s 1.3 billion population are of working age, between 15 and 64, but an increasing number are in the unemployed list. No official data has been released for more than two years but a recent leaked report -- denied by the government -- put the unemployment rate at a 45-year high of 6.1 percent. The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, a private research firm, estimates the jobless rate rose to 7.6 percent in April. “The economy is going to be a huge problem. The government simply cannot create jobs for millions entering the workforce,” said political analyst Parsa Venkateshwar Rao. “Modi will rely on businesses but they are also struggling so he has a real problem on his hands.” - ‘Not easy to survive’ Unemployment is particularly dire for women. from 36 percent in 2005 because of poor education and socio-economic barriers. The manifesto of Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) promised a $1.4-trillion infrastructure boost to create jobs if it won the election. It offered metro trains for 50 cities and to double the national highway network. But analysts say the government, which has drastically increased its debt over the past five years, will have to borrow huge new amounts to pay for the works. In 2015, Modi launched a Skill

India programme aiming to train 500 million people by 2022. But the results have been mixed. According to 2018 data, only a quarter of people who joined the scheme found jobs. “The Skill India mission has not had as much success as say the highway programme,” said economist Arvind Virmani. “The real crisis is about job skills and basic education.” India’s rural jobs guarantee programme offers work to about 70 million people at a minimum wage for 100 days a year, but there is no

equivalent for the growing numbers of urban youth. Experts say the government must consider an urban employment guarantee scheme in order to reap the true benefit of its economic growth. ISLAMBAD - Pakistan said on Sunday over 600 people, most of them children, had tested HIV positive in a village in southern Sindh province. Concern grew after hundreds of people were allegedly infected by a doctor using a contaminated syringe in Rato Dero and surrounding villages of Larkana district. “Some 681 people, of which 537 were children from 2-12 years of age, had been tested positive for HIV until yesterday in Rato Dero village,” special health advisor Zafar Mirza told a press conference in Islamabad. He said 21,375 people had been screened in Rato Dero, adding “the increase in the number of patients

being tested positive for HIV is a matter of grave concern for the government”. Mirza said the “use of unsafe sringes might be one of the causes for spread of the disease but the government is making all-out efforts to ascertain the exact cause”. “Prime Minister Imran Khan is going to unveil drastic measures to prevent the disease once we get ascertain the cause of the spread of disease”. Parents in the area fear their children’s futures have been irreparably harmed after contracting HIV, especially in a country whose masses of rural poor have little understanding of the disease or access to treatment.

Pakistan was long considered a low prevalence country for HIV, but the disease is expanding at an alarming rate, particularly among intravenous drug users and sex workers. With about 20,000 new HIV infections reported in 2017 alone, Pakistan currently has the second fastest growing HIV rates across Asia, according to the UN. Pakistan’s surging population also suffers the additional burden of having insufficient access to quality healthcare following decades of under-investment by the state, leaving impoverished, rural communities especially vulnerable to unqualified medical practitioners. India’s Modi facing urgent economic challenges after win

NEW DELHI - Dissatisfaction with India’s lagging economy didn’t deter voters from handing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist party a landslide parliamentary election victory. Now, they’ll be expecting something in return: faster, bolder action on long-promised reforms to transform the economy and improve the lives of India’s 1.3 billion people. Modi made big promises during the campaign for the weeks-long vote, viewed by many as a referendum on his first five-year term, which began in 2014. His election manifesto included a pledge to double farmers’ incomes and provide lavish aid to rural areas. He also vowed to make India the world’s third-largest economy by 2030 and to spend more than $1.4 trillion — quadruple the country’s annual budget — on improved infrastructure. Such promises rang hollow for many disgruntled with the country’s 6.1% unemployment rate, the highest in decades; slow progress on modernizing railways and other infrastructure; streamlining India’s byzantine bureaucracy and other initiatives that helped him win office in the first place. But voters gave him the benefit of the doubt. With most of the estimated 600 million votes counted by early Friday, Election Commission data showed Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party winning 287 out of the 525 seats in the Lok Sabha, India’s lower house of Parliament, well beyond the simple majority to form a government. The economy may well get at least a short-term boost from the incumbent alliance’s strong showing in the election. The benchmark Sensex index surged briefly to a record high, over 40,000. That infusion of confidence could help drive increases in foreign and domestic investment, Priyanka Kishore of Oxford Economics said in a post-election analysis. However, she said, “From a longer-term perspective, the focus is likely to shift back to Modi’s economic and reform agenda, once the euphoria gives way to more pragmatic assessments of India’s

Mt. Agung erupts with incandescent lava flowing for three kilometers

DENPASAR - Mount Agung in Karangasem district, Bali, erupted again on Friday (May 24) at 19:23 a.m., spewing incandescent lava in all directions for as far as 2.5 to three kilometers.

In this Friday, Nov. 30, 2018 file photo, Indian farmers and agricultural laborers march towards the Indian Parliament during a protest rally in New Delhi, India. India s slowing economy appears not to have deterred millions of voters from supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist party s return to power. economic situation.” While campaigning, Modi countered opposition criticism over suicides among farmers hit hard by low crop prices by focusing on wooing members of the Hindu majority with a nationalist pitch and playing up his strong stance toward India’s nuclear-armed archrival, neighboring Pakistan. That strategy appears to have succeeded. “My sense is that the BJP was effective in keeping macro issues about the economy, such as unemployment or growth rates, outside the narrative of this election campaign. It was partly able to do so by leaning on emotive issues such as national security and Hindu nationalism,” said Nikhil Menon, an assistant professor of history at the University of Notre Dame. In the meantime, Modi’s party could point to highly visible ini-

tiatives such as his Clean India program, a massive effort to build toilets in towns and villages to help stop open-air defecation. Ajay Batt, a businessman in Delhi, said he was convinced. “This slow-down can be a temporary thing, but people think about the country’s security. Country is first. I am sure he (Modi) will improve the economy in the next five years,” said Batt, who said he voted for Modi. Now that the curtain has fallen on the election theatrics, Modi faces the hard work of revving up an economy at a time when wary consumers are spending less on everything, from toothbrushes to automobiles. The Department of Economic Affairs reported that the economy slowed in 2018-2019, from 8% in mid-2018 to under 7% in the most recent quarter, hobbled by that

slowing consumer demand, weak growth in investment and drooping exports. Modi’s decision to pull 86% of cash out of circulation in a demonetization he said was aimed at rooting out corruption had a severe, though short-term adverse impact on the economy, as hundreds of millions of people suddenly discovered they had no funds for even the simplest transactions. Hiccups in the implementation of India’s new Goods and Services Tax, or GST, haven’t helped, said Devashish Mitra, an economics professor at Syracuse University. While the tough talk on security did help shore up support for Modi’s party, the incumbent’s advantage also stemmed from public skepticism toward the opposition Congress Party, given its mediocre record on reforms and legacy of corruption and incompetence, he said.

The “Modi government should get a lot of credit for its Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code as well as the cleansing of the banking system, an important component being getting rid of non-performing assets,” Mitra said. But he noted that job creation was slow compared with the growth in the workforce, labor reforms have made halting progress and difficulties in acquiring land have hindered growth in manufacturing and construction of infrastructure. Looking ahead, breakthroughs on Modi’s original, ambitious reform agenda are unlikely, says Kishore of Oxford Economics. Instead, his government will likely focus on measures that could help energize the economy and satisfy campaign promises, such as crop price subsidies and income and credit support for farmers and small businesses.(ap)

“Yes, there has been an eruption. The height of the ash column was not reported; however, there was a roaring noise at the observation post,” said Head of the Bali Provincial Disaster Management Agency, I Made Rentin, here on

Friday night. The eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30 mm and a duration of some four minutes and 30 seconds. Even though Mount Agung erupted again, it is still at Level III

(Standby) status. The eruption, which occurred at 7:23 pm, affected several areas in Karangasem district, which were exposed to thick ash and sand, including Pempatan Village, Besakih Village, Menanga Village, Sebudi Village, Muncan Village, Amerta Bhuana Village, Nongan Village, Rendang Village and several areas in Bangli district.

Rentin called on people living around Mount Agung not to move within a radius of four kilometers from the peak crater. The hazard estimation zone is dynamic and continues to be evaluated and can change at any time following the latest observation data on Mount Agung. In addition, people have been asked to equip themselves with

masks if they leave their houses and always follow directions from officials. “Increase preparedness. If there is a larger eruption, people must evacuate in an orderly manner, according to the agreed evacuation plan. Don’t panic, keep calm, and let’s pray that we are all protected by Hyang Widhi (God),” said Rentin.(ant)

Purple Taro Soup, a Delicious and Healthy Traditional Menu

When vacationing in Bali, at times you need to taste some traditional local menus. The Island of Gods community has various types

of menus whose preparation is simple, distinctive and healthy. For instance, there is purple taro soup. This cuisine has even existed since

ancient times. It was commonly consumed by farmers whose lives are simple but still happy. Purple taro soup has indeed been crushed by the progress of the times following the rampant emergence of ready-to-eat foods. Actually, the purple taro is an ingredient richly containing potassium and calcium which maintain metabolic stability and heart health. This menu offers a good taste and contains lots of fiber as well as vitamins A and C. Along with the development of Bali tourism promoting cultural tourism, traditional food existing in the past is discovered and then processed into prominent menus. Such various servings do not only have good taste, but also look attractive and beautiful. Hotel and restaurant chefs having the ability to create and process menus, indeed

continue to explore and develop it. Taro is a plant cultivated by people of the past. Its tubers were used as a substitute of staple food. Stems and leaves are commonly used for pig fodder mixed with bran and other food scraps. So, do not be surprised, the domestic pig farmers in the past had healthy meat without chemicals. Let’s be back to the purple taro soup. This has become a featured menu at several hotels and restaurants in the tourist area of ??Ubud. Taro soup is usually used as the opening menu. Sometimes it is also combined with walking programs around the village as well as yoga package and other traditional nuanced activities. Surely, the servings are adapted to tourists’ appetite with distinctive taste. Preparation of this menu is not

too difficult. First of all, you have to choose a large, young purple taro stem. Peel the stem and slice it ??thinly, so the sap and mucus can easily come out. The sliced ??stems are then soaked in the salt water for about 30 minutes. After that, squeeze them repeatedly with the aim to make the stem soft and release the entire sap and mucus. Meanwhile, the seasoning uses Balinese spices such as turmeric, ginger, galangal, lemongrass and shallot. All of these spices are only pushed to produce a clearer soup. The seasoning is then stir-fried and added chicken stock. The taro stem is put into a pan and add some salt and pepper. Ultimately, cook for about 30 minutes. Having been cooked, take out and it’s ready to be served. (kmb)

Under the dome: Fears Pacific nuclear ‘coffin’ is leaking

MAJURO - As nuclear explosions go, the US “Cactus” bomb test in May 1958 was relatively small -but it has left a lasting legacy for the Marshall Islands in a dome-shaped radioactive dump. The dome -- described by a UN chief Antonio Guterres as “a kind of coffin” -- was built two decades after the blast in the Pacific ocean region. The US military filled the bomb crater on Runit island with radioactive waste, capped it with concrete, and told displaced residents of the Pacific’s remote Enewetak atoll they could safely return home. But Runit’s 45-centimetre (18inch) thick concrete dome has now developed cracks. And because the 115-metre wide crater was never lined, there are fears radioactive contaminants are leaching through the island’s porous coral rock into the ocean. The concerns have intensified amid climate change. Rising seas, encroaching on the low-lying nation, are threatening to undermine the dome’s structural integrity. Jack Ading, who represents the area in the Marshalls’ parliament, calls the dome a “monstrosity”. “It is stuffed with radioactive contaminants that include plutonium-239, one of the most toxic substances known to man,” he told AFP. “The coffin is leaking its poison into the surrounding environment. And to make matters even worse, we’re told not to worry about this leakage because the radioactivity outside of the dome is at least as bad as the radioactivity inside of it.” - ‘Staggering’ challenges The dome has become a symbol of the mess left by the US nuclear test programme in the Marshall

islands when 67 bombs were detonated between 1947-58 at Enewetak and Bikini atolls. Numerous islanders were forcibly evacuated from ancestral lands and resettled, including Enewetak’s residents. Thousands more islanders were exposed to radioactive fallout and suffered health problems. The people of Enewetak were allowed home in 1980, and about 800 islanders now live in the southern part of the atoll, 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Runit. After the US military withdrew, the Marshall Islands government officially accepted a “full and final” settlement to cover the impact of the nuclear tests. But there have long been complaints that the compensation paid by Washington was inadequate, and the United Nations has described “a legacy of distrust” towards the United States. UN Secretary General Guterres raised the issue earlier this month after meeting Marshall Islands President Hilda Heine in Fiji, when they discussed the nuclear legacy and the prospect of radioactive leakage from Runit dome. “The Pacific was victimised in the past as we all know... the consequences of these have been quite dramatic, in relation to health, in relation to the poisoning of waters in some areas,” he said. Marshalls Foreign Minister John Silk said he appreciated Guterres bringing the Runit dome to world attention with this comments. “We are pleased that the Secretary General made these statements, since so often it seems that these ongoing legacy issues that continue to impact our people are forgotten by the international community,” he said. This picture taken on May 6, 2019 shows the front of the casino in Campione d’Italia by Swiss architect Mario Botta, a tiny Italian enclave on the shores of Switzerland’s Lake Lugano.

High stakes for enclave as Europe’s biggest casino goes bust

CAMPIONE D’ITALIA - Campione d’Italia, a tiny Italian enclave on the shores of Switzerland’s Lake Lugano, is fighting for its survival after its main source of income -- a giant casino -- went bankrupt. “SOS Campione is dead” reads a giant banner hung opposite the immense casino, made up of modernistic cubic-shaped blocks with darkened windows stretching 10 floors high. “Rien ne va plus” -- the French version of “no more bets” -- reads another banner on a tent set up by the unions representing some 500 casino employees, who suddenly found themselves without work. For the 1,961 inhabitants of this one-square-kilometre (0.4-squaremile) sovereign Italian territory inside southern Switzerland, the closure of the public casino has been devastating. For decades, it guaranteed the prosperity of the town, 23 kilometres (14 miles) from Italy. “Those who were lucky enough to be born here, were lucky enough to have a job,” Fiorenzo Dorigo, who worked at the casino for 21 years, told AFP. “Once you were done with your studies and military service, you reunited with all of your old school mates” working at the casino, he said. But that comradery and income security evaporated last July, when a local Italian court in Como ordered the casino to close after it failed to honour its financial obligations to authorities in Campione, which is part of Como

province. - Hoping for resurrection The atmosphere in the community now that the casino is shut is “sad”, said Evgenia Petrova, a 52-year-old Russian artist, living in Campione since 2012. The typical “Italian positivity”, which used to distinguish the village from the surrounding Swiss communities, “is not obvious anymore,” she told AFP, looking sadly out the window of her paint-splashed studio. But residents still hope for the casino’s resurrection. A Milan court recently overturned the Como legal ruling on the grounds of procedural inconsistencies. And last month, the Italian government sent an expert to evaluate the possibilities of bringing the casino back to life. Inhabitants are demanding that Rome comes to the rescue. “Campione is Italian. Italy cannot just abandon it. It must take all possible steps” to save the enclave, unionist Vincenzo Falanga told AFP. - Espionage Campione has a long and rich history. In the year 777, a wealthy trader and landowner named Totone donated

Campione -- later renamed Campione d’Italia under the rule of dictator Benito Mussolini -- to the monastery of Sant’Ambrogio in Milan, which became part of Italy in 1797. The picturesque enclave, which with its winding walkways and hills covered in cypress and palm trees offers a magnificent view of the lake, has a unique status. Inhabitants pay taxes to Italy, but almost everything else is Swiss, including the currency, car registration number plates, telephone lines and rubbish collection. It is also a tax haven: there is no sales tax and inhabitants benefit from a generous tax break to compensate for the cost of living, which is also very Swiss -- meaning high. A gaming establishment was first opened in Campione in 1917, but its main purpose was to spy on foreign diplomats during World War I, and it closed two years later. It reopened in 1933 thanks to a decree, which remains in effect, requiring the casino proceeds to cover all municipal costs. The casino, with its high-rollers, showered Campione in riches for decades, allowing the tiny enclave to dream big -- too big, according to some. (afp)

Losing Indonesian candidate challenges election in court

JAKARTA - The defeated candidate in Indonesia’s presidential election filed a challenge against the result in the country’s top court, just days after seven people died in rioting by his supporters in the capital. The legal move is the latest step in what analysts say has been a monthslong campaign by former Gen. Prabowo Subianto to discredit

the election. Members of his campaign including his brother, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, arrived Friday

night at the Constitutional Court in Jakarta, where a large digital clock was counting down the time left for challenges to the election. The court has a month to make its judgment. Official results released Tuesday by the Election Commission showed President Joko Widodo

JAKARTA - Presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto had no plan to meet rival Joko Widodo (Jokowi), as he is focusing on a lawsuit challenging the presidential election results, Greater Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Deputy General Chief Ferry Juliantono stated. “Prabowo has not yet planned to meet with Jokowi. There has not been any communication either,” he clarified here on Saturday.

Juliantono remarked that presidential candidate number 02 Prabowo and his running mate Sandiaga Uno as well as the Prabowo-Sandi National Winning Body (BPN) were yet channeling all their efforts for a lawsuit to challenge the 2019 presidential election results. The Constitutional Court is expected to deliver a verdict on the election dispute on June 24 this year, Juliantono remarked. “We have no

plan yet to communicate with him,” he noted. Jokowi, on numerous occasions, said he had initiated steps to meet Prabowo after the presidential elections on April 17, 2019. “I have taken the initiative soon after the polling day,” Jokowi had noted in Jakarta on Wednesday (May 22, 2019). Jokowi admitted to have tasked his confidant Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan to meet Prabowo,

won 55.5% of the votes in the April 17 poll, in line with preliminary counts on election day. Subianto, who also lost to Widodo in 2014, has declared himself the winner and alleged massive fraud but provided no credible evidence. The election supervisory agency earlier this week rejected Subian-

to’s complaint about the election’s integrity after evidence of vote rigging provided by his team consisted of printouts of online articles. Police say the 24 hours of rioting that started Tuesday night in Jakarta was orchestrated. Tens of thousands of police and soldiers remain on high alert in the capital.(ap)

but this attempt had proven futile. The General Election Commission (KPU) had concluded the recounting of ballots of the 2019 simultaneous elections on Tuesday (May 21), a day prior to the initially scheduled May 22. The KPU had declared the results of all 34 provincial recounts and 130 Overseas Election Committees (PPLN). The vote count results indicated that the Jokowi-Ma’ruf pair had

secured 85,607,362 votes, or 55.50 percent of the total national vote, while the challenger Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno pair had bagged 68,650,239 votes, or 44.50 percent of the total national votes. The national voter turnout for the 2019 Presidential Election had reached 199,987,870, while 154,257,601 valid votes for the presidential election were recorded. (ant)

Federer, Nadal threaten Djokovic bid for historic Slam

Novak Djokovic can become only the second man in history to have twice held all four Grand Slam titles at the same time with victory at the French Open. However, a returning Roger Federer and rejuvenated Rafael Nadal will once again stand in his way.

The Anker Wreck SINGARAJA - No-one knows the name of this small wooden boat, even if it had one, or what brought it to the area. The wreck is actually

named for the anchor that still lies about 6-8M from the surface. You follow the anchor chain down the steep slope to the flattened remains

of the shipwreck (35-50M), which lie across about 60M of sand. This is the deepest dive site, we believe that the good visibility and calm conditions mean that it will present no problems to experienced divers. Following the anchor chain down to 32M, there is a second (coralcovered) anchor at the point where the site becomes a sand slope. It is here that you see the first parts of the wreck, dark against the white sand. Across the site you will find copper sheeting and bottles, the boat’s cargo (artefacts, not for souvenirs). There are still some parts of the boat which remain out of the sand, and which are covered in gorgonians, a sure sign of little or no currents at the site. The wall to the west, at 5-10M, is rich with many overhangs, cracks and caves. A good idea for an extended safety stop after this dive. (IBP/net)

World number one Djokovic completed his first private stranglehold of all four Slams with victory at Roland Garros in 2016. Having clinched the 2018 Wimbledon and US Open titles and then a seventh Australian Open crown in January this year, the Serb is tantalisingly close to another ‘Djoko Slam’. Federer and Nadal, with 20 and 17 career Grand Slam titles each respectively, may be ahead of 15-time major winner Djokovic in total hauls. However, they have never managed to hold all four of the sport’s greatest prizes at the same time. It is such a rare feat that only Don Budge (1938) and Rod Laver (1962 and 1969) -- all calendar Grand Slams -- have pulled off the sweep in the sport’s history. Djokovic, who turned 32 on Wednesday, is playing down his potential date with destiny. After losing to Nadal in the Italian Open final last weekend, the Serb was in no doubt that it was the Spaniard who would likely be celebrating a 12th Roland Garros title in a little over two weeks’ time. “Nadal, number one favourite, without a doubt -- then everyone else,” he said. However, he admits his Paris triumph of 2016 which gave him his first sweep, is fuelling his bid for more history. “There is an extra motivation and incentive to win Roland Garros because of the opportunity to hold all four Slams, something I did three years ago, and that gives me obviously enough reason to believe I can do it again.” Twelve months ago, such confidence would have appeared reckless when he was shocked by Italian journeyman Marco Cecchinato in the quarter-finals, a defeat which sent him crashing out of the top 20 for the first time in over a decade. This time around he starts his campaign against Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, the world number 43 with a potential quarter-final against Germany’s Alexander Zverev who has still to get past the last eight at a Slam. Federer is returning to Roland Garros for the first time since 2015 having turned

In this file photo taken on May 16, 2019 Switzerland’s Roger Federer returns the ball to Portugal’s Joao Sousa during their ATP Masters tournament tennis match at the Foro Italico in Rome. Roger Federer on May 24 played down his chances of winning the French Open on his first appearance at Roland Garros since 2015, saying that title-winning form might not be “in his racquet”. his back on clay court tennis to focus on Wimbledon. - 10th anniversary This year marks the 10th anniversary of his one and only Paris triumph and should the 37-year-old defy the odds and clinch the 2019 title he would become the oldest Grand Slam champion of all time. However, Federer admits his hopes of seeing off Nadal and Djokovic are slim. “I feel like I’m playing good tennis, but is it enough against the absolute top guys when it really comes to the crunch? I’m not sure if it’s in

my racquet,” he said Friday. The Swiss star faces Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego, ranked at 73 in the first round on Sunday and could meet Nadal in the semi-finals. Nadal, whose record at Roland Garros stands at a staggering 11 titles and a win-loss record of 86-2, claimed a ninth Italian Open title and a record 34th Masters last week. “I don’t care if I’m the favourite,” said Nadal who starts against German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann, the world 184 who has never won a Grand Slam match. “I care about feeling well and playing well.” Nadal’s three-set win over Djokovic

in Rome was timely as it was his first title of 2019 and had followed three successive semi-final losses at Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid. The last two of those were against Dominic Thiem and Stefanos Tsitsipas, both of whom play with a one-handed backhand, just like Federer. Thiem, the 2018 runner-up to Nadal at Roland Garros, has defeated the Spaniard four times on clay. “There is a new wave coming through with the one-handed backhand that can counter some of Rafa’s spins and lefty play,” said Federer. Kevin Durant hit back at critics on Friday who questioned whether or not the Golden State Warriors are better without him in the lineup. Golden State have won five straight since losing the 10-time all-star Durant, who was sidelined after suffering an injury against the Houston Rockets. “It’s hard to get away from that because I watch the games (when Golden State are on the road) and

I saw the lead-up to the game and I saw everybody talking about it,” said Durant, who is averaging 34.2 points per game in the playoffs. “As a player, I think about that and I’m just like ‘That’s not true, that’s not the facts.’ “I feel the organization knows exactly what I’ve done on and off the court to become part of this culture and stamp my flag on this

organization.” Durant is unlikely to play in the opening game of the NBA finals on Thursday against the winner of a semi-final series between the Toronto Raptors and Milwaukee Bucks. Durant could leave as a free agent after the season. He feels there are those who are trying to drive a wedge between him and his teammates.

“It’s been that way since I got here, It’s the Warriors and K.D. I understand that,” said Durant, who joined the Warriors in 2016. “The last two years, I’ve done pretty much everything that they asked me to do from player, ambassador to the community to working hard every single day in shootarounds and practices. “I know what I bring to the team but I also know a lot of people on

the outside don’t like to see us together.” Teammate Stephen Curry said he doesn’t understand the criticism of Durant. “We look out for each other. There is sacrifice. At the end of the day, it’s all about winning,” Curry said. Toronto hold a 3-2 lead and can close out their series on Saturday when the Raptors host the Bucks. (afp)

Cup defeat leaves Barcelona with questions about identity and coach

‘Jadon is not on the market’ - Dortmund CEO rules out Sancho transfer BERLIN - Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has categorically ruled out selling England starlet Jadon Sancho ahead of next season. Sancho, 19, has been linked with a number of Europe’s top clubs after an explosive second season in Dortmund, but in an interview with Bild newspaper on Sunday, Dortmund boss Watzke said they would not let the English winger leave. “It is safe to assume that Jadon will not play for Dortmund for the next ten years,” said Watzke. “But in terms of the present day, we have very clear agreements. Jadon is not on the market and he is guaranteed to be a Dortmund player next season.” Dortmund have repeatedly ruled out selling Sancho in recent months, but speculation resurfaced this week after the club signed two similar attacking players in Thorgan Hazard and Julian Brandt. The 19-year-old joined Dortmund from Manchester City for 7.8 million euros ($8.8m) in 2017, but his estimated value has skyrocketed in the past year. Sancho earned his first England call-up in October, and established himself as a regular starter as Dortmund challenged for the Bundesliga title this season. The team eventually finished two points behind champions Bayern Munich, but CEO Watzke insisted that Dortmund will continue to challenge for the title in future. “We want to be champions, but Bayern are like Mount Everest, an 8000 metre challenge. You can try to tackle it, and we will do that,” he told Bild. “German football has a problem abroad because people see it as having a football monoculture. We broke that this season, and we feel we owe it to German football to set our sights on the title.” Watzke also admitted, however, that neither Dortmund nor Bayern could hope to keep up with the financial might of the Premier League. “England takes in 2.1 billion euros ($2.35bn) more than us in TV rights money every year,” he said. “As long as it stays like that, we can only have occasional success. No German team will be able to remain at the top of the European game anymore.” (afp)

Sarri’s Chelsea future in spotlight as Europa final looms

LONDON - Maurizio Sarri faces an uncertain future as Chelsea manager even if the muchmaligned Italian leads his side to victory in the Europa League final against Arsenal.

Sarri has endured a traumatic first season at Stamford Bridge and he heads to Baku with little clarity over his prospects of staying in charge beyond Wednesday’s final. Despite guiding Chelsea into next season’s Champions League, via a third-place finish in the Premier League, and reaching two cup finals, there remains a sense Sarri is on borrowed time whatever the result against Arsenal. The 60-year-old has been linked with a move to Juventus or Roma, with reports saying Chelsea would not block his return to Serie A. Even if Sarri does not join the Italian champions, he could still be sacked if Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and his coterie of advisors feel the former Napoli

boss is not the man to guide them through a turbulent period. With a damaging two-window transfer ban looming -- pending an appeal by Chelsea to the Court of Arbitration for Sport -- and star winger Eden Hazard set to get his wish to join Real Madrid, the next year promises to be a challenging spell for any manager, let alone one with the baggage Sarri has collected in his brief reign. Sarri insists he is happy to stay, but admits there will be no talks over his future until after the final. “I’m very happy to stay in the Premier League. I will speak to the club as I want to see if they are happy with me or not,” he said. “We had a good season, with a lot of problems of course. We lost two or three matches very badly.

“If we are able to win the final then it will become a wonderful season. This group deserves to continue and to try to improve more.” It is believed Chelsea’s senior decision-makers, including director Marina Granovskaia, will gauge the feelings of players before making a final decision on Sarri. There are concerns that his methods have caused so much unrest within the squad he may not be able to fully command their respect. That problem was laid bare by Kepa Arrizabalaga’s astonishing mutiny during the League Cup final when the Chelsea goalkeeper refused to be substituted after suffering cramp before the penalty shoot-out defeat against Manchester City. (afp)

Last week he said coach Ernesto Valverde was “trusted completely” but as Valencia’s players danced on the pitch at the Estadio Benito Villamarin, tossing the Copa del Rey between them, his support felt more reserved. “Ernesto has a contract for next season,” Bartomeu said. “He’s the coach. I don’t think this defeat is his fault.” When asked about Valverde’s future on Friday, Lionel Messi indicated he wanted him to stay, the captain’s approval perhaps even more significant than that of the president. I honestly believe the boss has done an impressive job during his time in charge,” said Messi. “I would like him to continue.” But that was before the 2-1 final defeat to Valencia on Saturday, which, despite a second-half surge, inspired by Messi and his goal 17 minutes before the end, leaves a title-winning season swamped in disappointment. Valverde has never been loved at Camp Nou, the question marks hanging over him to do with issues less tangible than results. After all, in La Liga, they finished this season 19 points ahead of Real Madrid, whom they beat by an aggregate score of 10-2 over four matches, and 11 clear of Atletico. Instead, his sceptics complain about style, seen as overly-rigid,

and suitability, a 55-year-old in charge of his sixth club, sensible and statesmanlike, but lacking the fizz for a coach of Barcelona. The two arguments are linked and, until now, lacked evidence to give them weight. But perhaps doubts can be self-fulfilling and when Rodrigo headed in Valencia’s second on Saturday night, the players may have begun to believe them too. - ‘Bitter-sweet season’ “It has been a good year,” said Gerard Pique. “But we expected to do a much better year. The taste is bitter-sweet.” Bartomeu must now decide if Valverde can take Barcelona where they desperately want to go, to victory in the Champions League, and if not, who could. There is a summer sale on supercoaches but none of Massimiliano Allegri, Jose Mourinho or Antonio Conte are proponents of the Barca DNA. At the other end of the spectrum is Quique Setien, a football purist regularly linked in the past, except he has just parted ways with Real Betis for failing to match style with results. Or former midfielder Xavi, with a sense of destiny and very real adoration of the fans. He has the trophies too but fewer days, let alone clubs, as a fully-fledged coach.

Barcelona’s Argentinian forward Lionel Messi gestures after shooting a free kick during the 2019 Spanish Copa del Rey (King’s Cup) final football match between Barcelona and Valencia on May 25, 2019 at the Benito Villamarin stadium in Sevilla. Any successor to Valverde would be charged with improvement, which could only mean winning the Champions League, a reassertion of identity and, now, rejuvenation. It would be unfair on Valencia’s determined, gutsy performance to say this final was a game Barcelona never wanted to play. But for 30 minutes before half-

time, they were flat, disheartened by Kevin Gameiro’s opener and, in the end, defeated by Rodrigo heading in again 13 minutes later. Each time, Valverde’s players looked beaten, drained of the conviction that made them champions, instead gazing into space and wallowing in self-pity. “We’re down, we can’t hide it,” said Valverde.

When Barcelona won the league with three games to spare last month, Bartomeu felt confident enough to declare: “We want the treble”. If it looked like he was putting pressure on his players, it was because they believed too. They took a 3-0 lead over Liverpool, with a potential final to come against either Ajax or Tottenham. BERLIN - Bayern Munich coach Niko Kovac appears to have avoided the sack after his side secured a domestic double with victory over RB Leipzig in the German Cup final on Saturday. Kovac, 47, has fought off relentless criticism in his first year in charge of Bayern, as well as rumours that he would face the sack even if the club did win the league and cup double. Yet Bayern’s cup victory appeared to end speculation over the Croatian’s future, as home fans chanted his name before kick-off and after the final whistle. “We never questioned whether he would be here next season, that was never a topic for us,” Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told

ARD after the game, echoing comments he had made at an event in Berlin the day before. “At the end of the day, trophies are what is expected at Bayern.” Rummenigge, who was considered one of Kovac’s strongest boardroom critics this season, said that it had been a “curious” season, but that the team had played “amazingly” on Saturday. The victory appears to be a final vindication for the under-fire coach, coming after the Bavarians won the Bundesliga title last Saturday, having clawed back a nine-point deficit from rivals Borussia Dortmund. “I had to stay calm, I know how difficult the job is. Trophies are important,” Kovac told ARD. He picked up a second trophy in

a week on Saturday, as Bayern beat Leipzig 3-0 at the Berlin Olympic Stadium. Kovac addressed the fans directly with a loudspeaker after the game, thanking them for their support. “I thanked the fans, without them, we would not have made it out of the hole we were in earlier in the season,” he told ARD. Kovac is now the first coach to have won the German Cup in two successive seasons with two different clubs, having beaten Bayern with Eintracht Frankfurt in last year’s final. “Last year, I cried because I was leaving the club. This year it was a bit less emotional but the emotions are always there,” he said.

Durant forced to defend his role with the Warriors

(afp)

(ant)

Modi kept his job, Indians worry about theirs

NEW DELHI - Asad Ahmed, one of about 1.2 million young Indians entering the cutthroat job market each month, diligently scribbles notes at a computer class in New Delhi.

Canggu has a lot of tourist accommodation and coastal tourism objects.

A Deloitte consultancy report in March said female labour force participation fell to 26 percent in 2018

Appreciation to partners and a moment to share in Ramadan Kuta Hotel & Residence. Iftar Gathering is a program initiated by ten hotels in Bali, namely the Aston Denpasar, Aston Kuta, Aston Canggu, Quest Kuta, Harper Kuta, NEO + Kuta Legian, NEO Kuta Jelantik, NEO Denpasar, favehotel Kuta Kartika Plaza, and favehotel Kuta Square

as an expression of appreciation to positive cooperation extended by the main supporters of the hotel consisting of travel agencies, companies, government agencies and media crews. The event held as a joint iftar event and CSR program invited orphans from the Adzkhiyah Alkhair

Orphanage to demonstrate their skills by doing recitations of the Quran and the little sermon. It was also resumed with the provision of donations to orphanages and door prize distribution. “This event is organized as our appreciation, so that we can stay in touch and get closer to our

media partners and those having supported our hotel units in Bali. Hopefully, this Iftar Gathering can be one of the means to further enhance better cooperation relations going forward,” said Amanda Dianova, Regional Marcom Manager for East Indonesia of Archipelago International. (kmb)

from 36 percent in 2005 because of poor education and socio-economic barriers.

At the Delhi classes, 18-year-old Sehar, who uses one name, is worried about helping her poor family, including four younger sisters. Her father, who works at a hospital, is the only earner. “I am the eldest and I want to help my family, it’s not easy to survive in this city.” (afp)

Istanbul’s musical ferry can be a soulful experience

Separately, Head of Airport Authority Office for Bali Region IV, Elfi Amir, explained that in the evening there is a light rain of volcanic ash, and the conditions will continue until 01:00 local time

on Saturday (May 25). He said the volcanic ash was detected at an altitude of around 4,000-5,000 m in the air space of Ngurah Rai Airport, with moderate and scattered intensity. He emphasized that the activities of Ngurah Rai Airport are still operating normally and the ATC officers carried out tactic piloting to keep the aircraft away from the area exposed to volcanic ash. The users of air transport services are appealed not to panic about the Mount Agung eruption because in tackling disasters of volcanic ash the airport already has a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). In addition, each airline operator also carries out safety assessment to ensure the safety and security of its flight. (kmb23)
