New Tonto, familiar feelings for Native Americans Associated Press Writer
SEATTLE — Gyasi Ross grew up decades after the “Lone Ranger” aired on TV, but his friends would still call him “Tonto” when they teased him. “Everybody understands who Tonto is, even if we hadn’t seen the show, and we understood it wasn’t a good thing,” said Ross, a member of the Blackfeet Nation in Montana who lives and has family in the Suquamish Tribe, outside Seattle. “Why else would you tease someone with that?” The making of a new “Lone Ranger” Disney movie, and the announcement that Johnny Depp is playing sidekick Tonto, have reawakened feelings about a character that has drawn much criticism over the years as being a Hollywood creation guilty of spreading stereotypes. The film is still in production, but Indian Country has been abuzz about it for months, with many sharing opinions online and a national Native publication running an occasional series on the topic. Some Native
Americans welcome the new movie, which is slated for release next summer. Parts were filmed on the Navajo Nation with the tribe’s support, and an Oklahoma tribe recently made Depp an honorary member. But for others, the “Lone Ranger” represents a lingering sore spot — one that goes back to the 1950s television version of Tonto, who spoke in broken English, wore buckskin and lacked any real cultural traits. Depp’s role attracted particular attention in April when producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted a picture of the actor in his Tonto costume. He had on black and white face paint, an intense gaze, a black bird attached to his head and plenty of decorative feathers. “The moment it hit my Facebook news-
feed, the updates from my friends went nutso,” wrote Natanya Ann Pulley, a doctorate student at University of Utah, in an essay for the online magazine McSweeney’s. For Pulley and her friends, the portrayal of Native Americans in Western movies is getting old. “I’m worried about the Tonto figure becoming a parody or a commercialized figure that doesn’t have any dimension or depth. Or consideration for contemporary context of Native Americans,” she said.

Batman star Christian Bale visits shooting victims Associated Press Writer
AURORA, Colo. — Batman star Christian Bale visited survivors of the Colorado theater shooting Tuesday, and thanked medical staff and police officers who responded to the attack that killed 12 people and injured 58 others. Bale visited with little advance warning and also stopped by a makeshift memorial to victims near the movie theater that was showing “The Dark Knight Rises” when the gunfire erupted. Carey Rottman, one of those injured in Friday’s shooting, posted two photos of himself with Bale on his Facebook page. Janie Bowman-Hayes, assistant vice president of surgical services at sister hospital Swedish Medical Center, said she and co-workers were attending a luncheon at The Medical Center of Aurora to thank staff who tended to victims. “When we got there, then we found out he was there,” she said. Bale, humble and dressed casually in a black T-shirt and jeans, thanked the staff, shook hands and agreed to have his photo taken with employees, BowmanHayes said. “He just said he wanted to come to
thank all of us because he has been thinking about this. He knows the whole world has been thinking about this,” she said.
“He took it upon himself to come and thank us.” An online campaign had urged Bale to visit survivors of the shooting.

The magnitude 6.4 quake hit about 7:30 a.m. (0030 GMT) and was centered 28 kilometers (17 miles) northwest of Aceh province’s Sinabang town at a depth of 45 kilometers (28 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Sutopo Purwo Nugroho from the National Disaster Management Agency said a 70-year-old man who was suffering from hypertension died as he fled in panic and fell down, but there were no other casualties reported. Twenty buildings were damaged, including mosques, public health centers, schools and local government offices, the agency said. Suharjono, from Indonesia’s meteorology and geophysics agency, said the earthquake had no potential to generate a tsunami. He said a quake that close to the coast would have to be more powerful to generate a giant wave. Residents of Sinabang on Simeulue island, off the west coast of Sumatra and close to the epicenter, said the quake struck as people were gathered for pre-dawn meals and prayers during the fasting month of Ramadan.

International airport to be built in East Buleleng
SINGARAJA - Although the discourse had ever disappeared, the plan of international airport construction in Buleleng is still going on. The Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana, revealed the matter after inaugurated by Deputy Governor of Bali, Puspayoga, in the Buleleng Parliament Hall on Tuesday (Jul 24). The Regent Agus Suradnyana said he still supported the development of
an international airport in Buleleng. He expressed his optimism if the airport would be realized. However, it would be no longer located in the West Buleleng as heralded during the reign of the Regent Bagiada. “As planned, the location will be in East Buleleng,” he said. According to him, the construction of international airport in Buleleng was a strategic plan because the runaway of Ngurah Rai Airport was only one. So, he considered it very necessary to have additional
airport elsewhere in Bali, namely in Buleleng. Besides, he said that flight delays occurring so far mostly happened due to lack of take-off slots at the airport. “To that end, it has been fixed that an international airport will be built in Buleleng,” he said. On the other hand, the Regent Agus Suradnyana accompanied by Deputy Regent Nyoman Sutjidra explained that his party would realize all the programs both the ones delivered during the campaign and open house to the residents of Bule-
leng. Those programs would be realized into short-term and long-term program. Interestingly, in realizing the programs his party would not ask for consulting assistance. “Consultant will only work on the editorial preparation, while the idea would be self-designed,” he said. Meanwhile, the Deputy Regent Nyoman Sutjidra said his shortterm program which had been promised during the campaign was to build a non-class hospital. As planned, this hospital would
be established in 2013 in West and East Buleleng. Additionally, the Buleleng Hospital belonging to type B would be worked on and upgraded into type A. On that account, the health service of the regional hospital for Buleleng community would be more optimal. “Together with Mr. Regent we have planned to meet the promise. Hopefully, we can build two non-class hospitals in 2013 and they will become the first hospital of its kind in Bali,” he explained. (kmb15)
