Spielberg brings Dahl’s friendly giant to screens with “The BFG”
LOS ANGELES - Hollywood director Steven Spielberg returns to making films through the eyes of children with “The BFG”, a big screen adaptation of the much-loved story by British author Roald Dahl. The tale follows young Sophie, played by Ruby Barnhill, who comes across a giant, portrayed by Oscar winner Mark Rylance - a Big Friendly Giant (BFG) who, unlike his peers, does not eat children. Although Spielberg has made
many family movies in his awardwinning career, he has also directed more historical films such as “Saving Private Ryan” and “Lincoln”. “I haven’t really swum in this wading pool in a long time,” Spielberg told Reuters at the film’s pre-
miere in Los Angeles on Tuesday. “It was really nice to be able to just let my imagination roam free without being kind of fettered by all the precepts of history and all the truths you need to tell when you do a historical subject. So all of us felt free and very happy to be returning to our childhoods to tell this story.” “The BFG”, which first screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May, hits cinemas worldwide from June 30. Bali still becomes a favorite destination for Australians, many of whom consider the Island of the Goda as their second home. One of the reasons why many Australian citizens visit Bali is because it ia oftwn cheaper to come here than it is for them to travel in their home country. Nevertheless, sometimes they are also reminded that Bali is a different country. Different countries have different rules and laws as well. This was revealed by Consul General of Australia in Bali, Dr. Helena Studdert, when met with in Renon on Wednesday (Jun. 22). IBP/Eka Adhyasa

Strengthening sub-branding is a must
Strengthening of the sub-branding of Wonderful Indonesia Brand is a must especially for favorite destination in the country such as Bali and the “New Bali” which are Toba Lake, Borobudur, Mandalika, Labuan Bajo, Bromo-Tengger-Semeru, Kepulauan Seribu, Wakatobi, Tanjung Lesung, Morotai and Tanjung Kelayang.
“A sub-branding to support Wonderful Indonesia is needed. For example, there is Bali Shanti at Wonderful Indonesia. The Wonderful will be strong if there is a strong support underneath. The strengthening of the great ten is a must to
support the Wonderful Indonesia,” said the Executive Director of Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Badung I Made Sulasa Jaya in Focus Group Discussion (FGD) “Wonderful Indonesia” in Badung Government Office on Wednesday, June 22. According to Sulasa, there are three things that are needed to be considered in branding the Wonderful Indonesia. The first is commitment; in this case, the commitment of the
current government is very clear. The huge amount of fund for tourism promotion shows the commitment of Indonesian Government on tourism. “The second is structure. The regulation to support tourism must be clear. The central government cannot work by themselves and for that reason; there must be support from the other part of the government. So, the structure must be clear,” he added. The third one is the human resources. As tourism practitioners, he appreciated the appointment of Aref Yahya as the Minister of Tourism. Sulasa thinks that Arief has the ability to manage Indonesian tourism. “The Regent of Badung must
play his part in managing the tourism in Badung so it can develop properly,” he explained. Meanwhile, the Secretary General of PHRI Badung Gede Sukarta appreciated the policy of the government in promoting tourism. However, the government also must give feedback on it for example if there is news about one of the tourism destination, the government must give news for the visitors. “For that reason, there is a need of a consultant to handle the negative issues striking tourism sector. This is a common thing because the competition in tourism is very tight,” he added.
Sukarta said that currently, the government is not actively promoting Bali. The one who is doing it is the practitioners or the businessmen. “For example is my hotel. Annually, we use up to 300 million rupiah for promotion alone. The government maybe doesn’t know it so the government must use their funding to support our promotion,” he explained. The cooperation between the government and the businessmen must be very solid. Both sides must work together to develop tourism in Indonesia through Wonderful Indonesia. “The cooperation must be intensified so we can work together,” he said.(kmb32)
