English wedding: Pippa Middleton marries as royals look on
ENGLEFIELD — Two likely future British kings were there, along with one of the world’s most photographed women, the often-adorable Prince Harry, a multilingual tennis legend and a brash TV reality star.

But all eyes were on Pippa Middleton on Saturday as she walked down the aisle of a 12th-century church wearing a custom hand-embroidered gown with a tiara and long veil to marry hedge fund manager James Matthews. Reporters, photographers and camera crews invaded the small village of Englefield west of London, home to St. Mark’s Church, and nearby Bucklebury, where a lavish reception was being held Saturday night at the estate of the bride’s parents, Michael and Carole Middleton. Middleton, 33, is not royalty. But the starstudded wedding took on some aspects of a royal wedding, with well-wishers gathering outside the church grounds hoping for a glimpse. She arrived in a vintage Jaguar to enter the church on the arm of her father. Older sister Kate, also known as the Duchess of Cambridge, looked after the page boys and bridesmaids, who were all under five years old and included her own children, Prince George, 3, and Princess Charlotte, 2. Prince William and Prince Harry, decked out in formal morning suits, seemed relaxed

as they strolled into the church and were greeted by the groom’s well-known brother, Spencer Matthews, a star on the TV show “Made in Chelsea.” Matthews, 41, smiled broadly and sported elegant formal wear set off by a pale blue vest. The new couple emerged from the church an hour later. The children dropped flower petals in their path before the couple celebrated their union with a kiss. Then it was off for champagne and, later, a short spin in a different Jaguar. Ingrid Seward, editor of Majesty Magazine, said the Middletons could take pleasure in the day: Their first daughter, Kate, had married a future king, and their second daughter, Pippa, had married an extremely wealthy, charming and handsome man. “You can’t do better than that,” she said. Matthew and Pippa briefly dated in 2012 but became serious last year. He proposed during a visit to the enchanting Lake District, setting in motion what is being called the society wedding of the year. The wedding plan was not without risks

‘Alien: Covenant’ Slides Past ‘Guardians 2’ to Win Weekend With $36 Million

LOS ANGELES - As this weekend approached, the question lingered if “Alien: Covenant” would be able to unseat “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” from the top spot at the domestic box office. Now, we have an answer. As of Sunday morning, “Covenant,” from 20th Century Fox and Scott Free Productions, looks to be the winner with a three-day estimate of $36 million from 3,761 locations. That’s just above Disney’s “Guardians” sequel which is raking in an
additional $35.3 million from 4,347 spots. The super sequel is seeing only a 46% drop from last weekend, and its total domestic earnings now exceed $300 million. While “Alien” may have won, the film’s price tag in the $100 million range and marketing costs detract from the victory. The sixth installment in the Alien franchise (not counting the two Alien vs. Predator films) was directed by Ridley Scott and stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston,
Billy Crudup, and Danny McBride. It holds a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is in line with 2012’s “Prometheus.” Although it came in already having made $42 million overseas and $36 million was enough to land in the top slot, “Alien” grossed less during its first weekend in the U.S. than “Prometheus” did in 2012 ($51 million). Its final domestic earnings also came in below earlier projections, which pegged the horror flick at at least $40 million. (rtr)

People shout slogans during a rally in Madrid, Saturday, May 20, 2017. Thousands of Spaniards rallied in Madrid to support a no-confidence vote against conservative Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy brought by the far-left Podemos party.
No risk of snap election in Spain after Sanchez’s return, says PM
MADRID - There is no risk of a snap national election in Spain, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said on Monday, playing down any threat to his minority-led government from a change of leadership in the opposition Socialist party. The track record of left-winger Pedro Sanchez, ousted as Socialist leader in October and re-elected to the post on Sunday, points to less cooperation with the government on major cross-party issues including labour reform and budget spending. But Rajoy noted his government had already passed legislation during its seven-month tenure without the backing of the second-biggest party in parliament. “There won’t be early elections,” he told journalists on Monday. “The Socialist party changes nothing for me. I’ll try and reach agreement with them on issues, but if we don’t reach an understanding, so be it.” Financial markets - attuned to political tensions in the euro zone after Austria, the Netherlands and France have this year fended off
populist challenges at elections - reacted nervously to Sanchez’s election on Monday. By 1240 GMT, Spain’s Ibex was down 0.3 percent while the broader pan-European STOXX 600 index was flat. The yield on the country’s 10-year benchmark bond rose about 5 basis points, with gains trimmed slightly after Rajoy’s comments. BITTERLY DIVIDED Spanish analysts and commentators took a more sanguine view. “I
don’t think the new PSOE (Socialist) secretary general is interested in destabilising the government right now,” wrote the editor of El Mundo newspaper, Pedro Guartango, in an editorial. “He is more likely to play for time and build an alternative to Rajoy.” The PP holds 134 seats in parliament, compared to 84 for the Socialists. For a no-confidence vote in Rajoy to pass, the Socialists would have to join forces with far-left newcomer Podemos - an alliance they failed to create in the past - and
PP ally Ciudadanos would have to abstain. Rajoy has been able to pass policies without the support of the Socialists by counting on the support of market-friendly Ciudadanos and others. Spain’s long-delayed 2017 budget is due for a parliamentary vote of approval in coming weeks and the PP says it has the backing to pass the bill after courting regional governments in the Basque country and the Canary Islands. Rajoy had warned that if the 2017 budget was blocked he would call fresh elections. Sanchez’s re-election despite presiding over a slump in support carries parallels with the continued party backing for his counterparts in Britain and France, Jeremy Cor-
byn and Benoit Hamon, who have also performed poorly in polls. Party leader from 2014 to 2016, Sanchez garnered the worst electoral showing on record for the Socialists when he headed the 138-year-old party in the last two elections. The 45-year-old’s first task will be to unite a bitterly divided party, which he promised to do in his victory speech late on Sunday.(rtr) News can also be heard in “Bali Image” at Global Radio FM 96.5 from 9.30 until 10.00 am.
