Russell Brand reveals he has never looked after his children for a 24-hour period LOS ANGELES - Russell Brand has revealed he has never looked after his children for a 24hour period in an interview where he talks about the “real awakening” of the #MeToo movement. The 43-year-old comedian was a notorious womaniser in the past and has previously claimed to have slept with hundreds of women. Asked if the #MeToo movement has made him reappraise his past behaviour, he told the Sunday Times Magazine: “No. I just feel that [#MeToo] is a really positive change, it’s a sign of real awakening.” When questioned if there is anything he now looks back on with regret, he said: “No”. Brand, who was married to American pop star Katy Perry from
2010 to 2012, said he learnt a valuable lesson from the marriage. He said: “No one was put on this earth to make me feel better. That’s no one’s job.” He is now married to Laura Gallacher and they have two daughters, Mabel, two, and Peggy, six months, but has revealed he doesn’t get too involved with parenting. He said: “Um, I’ve done like, a night. But they’re asleep then.” Asked if he has spent 24 hours in sole charge of his children, he said: “No. She wouldn’t go away for 24 hours, Laura. She respects and cares for their safety too much. “Yes, I’m very, very focused on the mystical connotations of Mabel’s beauty and grace. Not so good on the nappies and making sure that they eat food. Brand was married to pop singer Katy Perry for 14 months.
The Universal film, a sequel to Shyamalan’s “Unbreakable” (2000) and “Split” (2016), stars Bruce Willis as the superhuman known as “The Overseer” locked in a psychiatric ward with nemesis and mass murderer Samuel L. Jackson, AKA “Mr. Glass.” Its estimated three-day take -at the start of the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday in the US -- saw it vault past the previous weekend’s leader, “The Upside” from STX Films, which took in $15.7 million for second spot.
“The Upside” features Bryan Cranston as a wealthy quadriplegic who hires ex-convict Kevin Hart as his caretaker. Critics have called the script, a remake of a 2011 French film, “corny” but praised the two lead actors. In third was Warner Bros.’s superhero film “Aquaman,” down one spot from last weekend, with a take of $10.3 million. The film, starring Jason Momoa as the Atlantean king, has generated more than $1 billion in box office revenues worldwide.
Fourth spot went to a surprise entry -- anime film “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” from Funimation Films, with $9 million. The fantasy martial arts movie is the 20th “Dragon Ball” film and appears to be having one of the best showings of any in the series. And in fifth was “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” still performing well in its sixth week out at $7.3 million. The Sony movie won the Best Animated Movie award at the recent Golden Globe ceremony. (afp)

This photo taken on January 19, 2019 shows a medical staff taking care of a new born baby at a hospital in Fuyang in China’s eastern Anhui province. China’s population shrank last year for the first time in 70 years, experts said, warning of a “demographic crisis” that puts pressure on the country’s slowing economy.
China’s population growth slows despite two-child policy
China’s population grew at a slower rate last year despite the abolition of the one-child policy, official data showed Monday, raising fears an ageing society will pile further pressure on an already slowing economy. China’s government raised the limit to two children in 2016 to rejuvenate the world’s most populous country, which has nearly 1.4 billion people, and experts say it may remove the cap next year. But the change does not seem to have inspired couples to have more children, partly due to urbanisation and the higher cost of living in the world’s second biggest economy, according to experts. “Decades-long social and economic transformations have prepared an entirely new generation in China, for whom marriage and childbearing no longer have the importance as they once did for their parents generation,” said Wang Feng, a sociology professor at University of California, Irving. There were 15.23 million live births in 2018, a drop of two million from the year before, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed.
With 9.93 million deaths, this led to a growth rate of 3.81 per thousand in 2018, a dip from 5.32 per thousand the previous year. Population growth is at its second-lowest since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Wang said, adding that the lowest ever growth was in 1960, when the country was going through a famine. Still, China’s total population rose by 5.3 million in 2018 to 1.395 billion people, retaining its title as the world’s most populous nation. NBS commissioner Ning Jize said population growth had peaked, but said the country still had huge potential. “China’s labour participation rate is not considered low world-
wide, more than 700 million of our 900 million people (of working age) are employed, and there is still room (for growth),” he said. -Workforce declineChina’s workforce -- those aged between 16 and 59 -- was 897.3 million last year, a 4.7 million drop from 2017, NBS data showed. This is the seventh consecutive year of decline, noted He Yafu, an independent demographer based in the southern Guangdong province. The workforce is on track to decline by as much as 23 percent by 2050. “The low birth rate has led to a seriously ageing population.
On one hand, families are getting smaller, reducing support for the elderly; on the other hand, the elderly population to workforce is growing, which increases the burden on the working population,” He said. Signs of China’s falling population growth had emerged when data released by some local authorities indicated a significant drop in births last year. In Qingdao, a city in eastern Shandong province -- one of China’s most populous regions -- births between January and November decreased by 21 percent to just over 81,000 compared to the previous year. - Birth limits removed? Introduced in 1979, the onechild policy was mainly enforced through fines but was also notorious for forced abortions and sterilisations, which caused birth
rates to plummet. Exceptions were made for rural families whose firstborn was a female, and for ethnic minorities. In a draft of China’s new sweeping Civil Code, due to be introduced in 2020, all mention of “family planning” has been removed, suggesting that the limit on family sizes could be lifted. But the rising cost of living has discouraged many of child-bearing age, He said, adding that like with many countries around the world, fertility rates in rural areas are high but less so in the cities.
