LONDON - The roaring engines and burning rubber of “The Fast & The Furious” films - one of cinema’s highest-grossing franchises - are skidding off the screen and into the real world, as a live stunt show based on the movies opens in London on Thursday. “Fast & Furious Live,” held in London’s O2 arena, aims to recreate the elaborate stunts for which the films are known. “We talked about a live show, but we’d never imagined it in the way that Rowland (creative director, Rowland French) imagined it,” actor Vin Diesel, one of the films’ main stars, told Reuters. The show features around 40 vehicles, including tanks, trucks, a submarine and dozens of fire-spitting, customised muscle cars. It uses 3D projection technology to help give the illusion that car chases are taking place over distances much greater than the inside of an arena. “Fast and The Furious,” about a gang of illegal street racers, has spawned eight films since 2001, with two more in development, a forthcoming spin-off film, video games and theme park rides. she made earlier this week. West, 40, was born in Atlanta and raised in Chicago. Kardashian, 37, and West are already parents to North, 4, and Saint, 2. Bitcoin use under scrutiny in Indonesian island of Bali

JAKARTA/KUTA - Indonesian authorities are investigating the use of bitcoin in the holiday island of Bali, amid warnings by the central bank in Southeast Asia’s biggest economy over the risks posed by virtual currencies, an official said. The probe started after the central bank on Dec. 7, 2017 issued a regulation banning the use of cryptocurrencies in payment systems, said Causa Iman Karana, head of Bank Indonesia’s representative office in Bali. “We found out from some postings on social media that Bali appeared to have become a haven for bitcoin transactions,” said Karana. Central bank officials and police went undercover at the end of 2017 to investigate scores of businesses in Bali advertising online that they offered bitcoin payment services, said Karana. The team found two cafes still using bitcoin as a means of payment, but 44 businesses including car rental outlets, hotels, travel

companies and jewellery stores, previously offering the service, had now stopped, he said. One of the cafes used bitcoin only for transactions of more than 243,000 rupiah, or about 0.001 bitcoin. A single transaction took about 1 1/2 hours to be processed and included a fee of 123,000 rupiah so this had discouraged its wider use for payments, said Karana. The official declined to name the businesses because he was still waiting for further instructions from

Bank Indonesia in Jakarta. “The next step is we will ban them as mandated by the law. We ask them not to use it anymore. Along with the Directorate of Special Crime Investigation unit, we will enforce the rule that all transactions in Indonesia must use rupiah.” Some locals in Bali said bitcoin was being used mainly by foreigners on the island, which is Indonesia’s tourism hub and has a large expatriate community. Bank Indonesia has called ownership of virtual

currencies high risk and prone to speculation, because no authority takes responsibility or officially administers them and because there is no underlying asset to be the basis for the price. Virtual currencies could also be used in money laundering and terrorism funding, and could have an impact on the stability of the financial system and causes losses for society, it has said. While trading has not be regulated so far, the central bank has said it was looking into the issue. Regulators around the world have been grappling with how to address risks posed by cryptocurrencies, as bitcoin, the world’s most popular virtual currency, soared more than

1,700 percent last year. Prices have plummeted since South Korea said last week it may ban domestic cryptocurrency exchanges. Bitcoin.co.id, an Indonesian online cryptocurrency exchange, said on its website that bitcoin was trading at 162.70 million rupiah ($12,247) per unit after losing around a quarter of it value this week. Artistic expression using digital imaging

Photography provides endless possibilities for artists to express themselves. The combination of technological advancements and the popularity of social media provide even greater space for artists to express their ideas and creativity to the public. Many people perhaps do not realise that many of the so-called photos that they see on social media, blogs and websites are not real photos at all. Many of these ‘photos’ have been created using digital imaging technology. I Made Adi Dharmawan for example deliberately creates works of art using this photographic genre. Dharmawan who lectures in the Photography Study Program of the Indonesia Institute of Arts (ISI), Denpasar’s Faculty of Fine Art and Design explained that digital imaging is a technique for engineering photographic works by combining several photos into a single image using processing software like Photoshop to create works with aesthetic value. Works of art using digital imaging techniques express the ideas, thought, stories or events that the photographer wishes to convey in a new way. “This methode stimulates photographers to express their feelings through a particualr concept”, said Adi Dharmawan to Bali Post on Saturday (Jan. 20). The photographer starts with a concept that they wish to express, said Darmawan. From there, he added, the photographer starts designing sketches for the work, creating a list of photos to be used in the final work. When all the images have been collected, software is used to merge them together. It is at this stage that the photographer who is creating the work must improvise and work on the images until the concept that they wish to convey comes together. “Like with others forms of visual

art, element such as line, color, spaces, light, shapes and textures need to be considered so that the final work not only conveys a certain message but is also interesting in terms of aesthetics”, said this photographer who has won several local, national and international photo art competitions. According to Adi Dharmawan, there are several tips and tricks that help in creating a digitally processed image that the public will appreciate. TO begin with a photographer should amass a large stock of photographic images by taking lots of pictures all the time. Secondly, becoming famil-

iar with the photographic art works of tother s also helpful as these can be used as a point of reference. Thirdly photo artists should continually experiment with Adobe Photoshop or other similar software so as to gain experience and be able to master all the tools available such as selecting techniques, cutting options, as well as masks and blending techniques. “Another thins that is just as important is for photographers to continually develop their imagination so that they can give birth to something fresh new and innovative”, he concluded. TABANAN - The otonan ritual for the monkeys at the Alas Kedaton tourist attraction in Kukuh village, Marga, took place in a lively manner on Saniscara Kliwon Uye or Saturday (Jan. 20). The monkey’s otonan was marked by a parade of two-meter-high ngrebeg gebogan (fruit arrangements). Many people came to the celebration with their children. As children learned how to feed the monkeys, the event was also an opportunity for children to feel a deeper appreciation for animals. Secretary of Kukuh customary village, I Gusti Ngurah Pujayasa, explained that the Tumpek Uye ritual held as part of the otonan celebration is one of the ways that the palemahan (harmonious relations with the natural environment) aspect of the Tri Hita Karana teachings are applied. Tri Hita Karana is the Balinese concept of maintaining harmonious relations with our fellow humans, with the natural environment and with the divine. As the coordinators of the Alas Kedaton attraction, the people of Kukuh customary village along with the management board of Alas Kedaton and the Alas Kedaton board of commerce have been holding this ritual for the monkeys for a long time. However it is only in the last year and a half that the two meter-high fruit arrangement parade for the monkeys has been taking place every 6 months merchants. “So, this is the third time that we have implement the giant fruit arrangement parade. Tumpek Uye is the day when we express our gratitude for the blessings bestowed on us by God in the form of tourists who visit this attraction to see the monkeys and flying fox”, explained Pujayasa. The celebratory event started in the middle courtyard of Alas Kedaton Temple with a ritual for the monkeys. Then everyone prayed together and the gebogan or fruit arrangements were presented to God almighty. The Alas Kedaton Chamber of Commerce presented 22 fruit arrangements. Both the gebogan presented by the management of Alas Kedaton tourist attraction and the ones presented by the Kedaton Chamber of Commerce, were made up of all local fruits such as as red guava, tomatoes, corn, carrots, bananas, rambutan, papaya, mango and beans. After the prayers, the giant gebogan arrangement was paraded around the middle courtyard of Kahyangan Kedaton Temple and the outermost courtyard. A flock of monkeys approached and picked the fruits presented by the residents of Kukuh and children also helps by giving the fruit directly to the monkeys. While the barrel of monkeys descended on those carrying the fruit gebongan, they were very polite about taking the fruit. The moment when the monkeys swarmed the people carrying the fruit was when photographers also became excited about capturing this moment. The scene of the semi-tamed monkeys of Alas Kedaton coming to grab fruit from local residents was an opportunity to capture some great shots. (kmb28)

Nice Carnival PARIS - If you’re looking for an excuse to come here, February is Carnival time. It’s a wonderful opportunity to discover Nice’s mild climate, luminous skies and the art of luxury living on the French Riviera. Stunning floats bedecked with flowers offer family-friendly fun, there are heaps of free activities for little ones. Nice’s Carnival welcomes its gay visitors just as warmly as it greets any romantic couple or group of singles seeking exuberant entertainment after winter gloom. Although each year has its own

unique elements, some traditional aspects have grown over more than a century: Carnival Parades by day and by night; Flower Battles; fireworks and the burning of an enormous King. The Carnival King leads his Carnival Procession through the streets, with around twenty floats taking the theme of the year. The King is accompanied by more than fifty giant-headed puppets, the Grosses Tetes. Making the papier-mache figures uses centuries-old techniques, and the painting is done by specialist craftspeople.

Traveling Costumes are created to dress each character, the more flamboyant the better. Just one puppet can weigh over two tons and tower over the watching crowds at twelve meters high. A king must have a queen, and she is selected from a bevy of local beauties for the honour. Her duties range from posing for Carnival photos to throwing posies of flowers from a float for the Flower Parade. So she needs to be able to keep that lovely smile all day and into the night’s revelries. Masks and Mardi Gras-style carnivals have a long association, stemming from the Middle Ages when the celebrations allowed oppressed peasants to mock the aristocracy.

Masks and disguises protected them from what might be a beheading offense. The modern Nice Carnival dates from 1873 and continued with only brief interruptions for the more serious events of wars. Unlike the carnivals of Venice, there’s no real expectation that visitors should wear costume or masks. Far from grey skies and full of excitement, Nice at Carnival time is a riot of colour and commotion. Parades take place on three or four afternoons or evenings a week during the Carnival period, and most are free, so you can save your cash for some luxury shopping or a more upmarket hotel. There’s always an admission charge for the Bataille des Fleurs, but it’s well worth shelling out for.

International The final weekend of the Carnival includes a popular Bartenders Race, and the year’s Carnival King is burned in the sea on the last night, followed by a fantastic firework display. The parade route changes slightly each year but usually follows part of the Promenade des Anglais. Tickets for the stands are more expensive, but the cheapest allow you watch along the roadside. Buy from the Nice Tourist Office if you like to plan in advance, or purchase from the stalls set up on the Promenade. If you’re a planner, you might also want to pick up a French Riviera Pass with offers on attractions– buy online, or stop off and ask the helpful tourist office staff. (net)

DENPASAR — Denpasar municipality always provides full opportunities for all parties to provide innovation in urban development. For instance, a university and Tukad Bindu Foundation have initiative to encourage urban farming in Denpasar city. Implementation of this activity is one of the innovations of Tukad Bindu development for education aside from recreation and other activities. Subdivision Head of Information and Public Relations, Regional Secretariat of Denpasar, I Wayan Hendaryana, when asked for his confirmation admitted that municipal government is very supportive and encouraging the role of private sectors and various stakeholders in providing innovation for agriculture in Denpasar city. This happens because the agricultural land in the city of Denpasar is very limited. So, it requires innovation and technology utilization in the agriculture as well as urban farming. “The innovations from all parties such as private sector or other stakeholders are certainly very helpful for Denpasar government. So, it can certainly encourage people to be independent in the procurement of food everyday and utilize the land at home yard to the maximum,” he concluded. Meanwhile, a lecturer of Faculty of Agriculture, Mahasaraswati University, Dr. Yudariani, said that her Faculty of Agriculture has cooperated with Tukad Bindu Foundation and Denpasar municipality. The commitment is realized with a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) among all the involved stakeholders. “We have signed the LoA with all the stakeholders related to the utilization of the existing land in Tukad Bindu (River) which will be used for field laboratory by Faculty of Agriculture,” explained Yudariani. Further, she explained that urban

farming is the concept of transferring conventional agriculture to urban agriculture. According to Yudariani, the difference lies in the orientation only. “Conventional agriculture is oriented to produce while urban farming is more oriented to the character of the perpetrators namely the urban society,” he said. The activities carried out every Sunday in the area of 200 square meters is expected to provide a challenge for students and surrounding communities to take advantage of the narrow land with the maximum, especially agriculture. Later on, the program is designed to be implemented for at least three years. In the first year, it focuses on dividing river banks for certain plantations; in the second year on the program implementation and consolidation; and in the third year on achieving the goal of empowering the community around the Bindu Riverbank. “In addition to having recreation, Tukad Bindu can also be a means of education for the community, especially in the field of agriculture, so the facilities in Tukad Bindu become complete, ranging from fitness facilities, various local foods, river scenery and so forth. And of course, we hope the surrounding people become more concerned with the environment,” he concluded. Chairman of the Tukad Bindu Foundation, I.B. Ari Manik, really appreciated and supported the effort of applying urban farming agriculture in Denpasar city. Therefore, Gus Arik hoped the community to take care of the environment and nature today. “We encourage people to make early identification on the importance of protecting the environment so the habit of littering in the river can be minimized and the river is clean and useful for humans,” he said. DENPASAR - Dozens of cyber criminals are still being detained in the Directorate of the Bali Police Alert Unit (Sabhara). They are still under investigation by Chinese police officers. According to Chinese police standards, each perpetrator is accompanied by two officers. As seen last Friday (Jan. 19), one by one of the perpetrators were handcuffed and brought from the Directorate of Bali Police Alert Unit Building and taken to the Directorate of Special Criminal Investigation Unit of Bali Police, each accompanied by two Chinese Police Officers as well as one alert unit officers armed with a long-barrelled firearm. “The Chinese police arrived in Bali on Monday (Jan. 15) and while only six personnel were seen in the Bali Police Station, many others were on standby outside. According to SOP each perpetrator must be accompanied by two Chinese police officers. There are 63 perpetrators: explained one police officer. Late in the afternoon, the Chinese police took two men and one woman to the Directorate of Special Criminal Investigation room to be questioned. Spokesperson of Bali Police, Hengky Widjaja, accompanied by Deputy Director of Special Criminal Investigation Unit, Rudi Setiawan, confirmed that the

Chinese police had arrived in Bali and that the preliminary investigation and secondary investigations are underway. The alleged criminals were apprehended after a team of officers from the Indonesian Police Headquarters, the CTOC Taskforce and the Bali Police Special Criminal Investigation conducted a raid in four locations; Jalan Tukad Badung XXI No. 22, Renon, South Denpasar, two locations on Jalan Sahadewa and Jalan Darmawangsa Gang SDN 2, South Kuta, last Thursday (Jan. 11), where several Chinese citizens as well as a man from East Java were arrested for their alleged involvement in online fraud. On Jalan Tukad Badung police secured 25 people, most of whom are from China. Another 37 people were arrested in ??South Kuta. The Red-White Taskforce Team of the Indonesian Police Headquarters was led by Bagus, while Bali Police team led Deputy Director of Bali Police Special Criminal Investigation Unit, Rudi Setiawan. Meanwhile, the 38 year old man from Madium East Java was arrested on 22 Jalan Tukad Badung XXI, Renon is Sumarianto. The alleged leader of the online fraud team is 41 year old Yap Kok Heong, from Malaysia and 41 year old Liao Jui Ko, from China. Evidence secured includes laptops, handphones, printers, small safe deposits and passports. (kmb36)

Mount Agung erupts, ash rises up to 2,500m: PVMBG JAKARTA - Mount Agung has erupted and is spewing volcanic ash along with smoke columns reaching 2,500 meters, the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry`s Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG) reported here on Friday. During the eruption, a number of tremors also occurred for some 120 seconds, the Volcanology Center noted. As seen from the Mount Agung Observatory Post, the volcanic ash moved toward the eastern section of the volcano. In September last year, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) raised the Mount Agung alert status to the highest level (IV), but in October, the authority lowered the status to the second-highest level (III). In November, BMKG once again raised the volcano`s alert status. According to the volcanology center, Mount Agung released a few eruptions, spewing columns of ash and smoke. An orange

lava-burn was also spotted glowing at the volcano`s crater. Following the eruption, the Aviation Color Code remains unchanged at the second-highest “orange” status. The orange status indicates that the volcano may exhibit “heightened unrest with increased likelihood of eruption, or the volcano eruption is underway with no or minor ash emission.” As reported by Anwar Sidiq and Devy Kamil Syahbana, two officers of the PVMBG, the eruption and ash emission may not continue, but the bright glow from the crater can be spotted during eruptions. “The best estimate of the ash cloud`s top is around 18,054 feet (5,642 meters) above sea level, which may be higher than what can be observed clearly,” a report from the PVMBG`s official website stated. The volcanology center has called on the villagers, as well as tourists and hikers, to avoid any areas within a six-kilometer radius from the crater of Mount

Agung. “However, the dangerous areas may be expanded or changed at any time, depending on the evaluations conducted regularly by the authority,” it noted. Within the six-km radius, some 12 villages have been notified as disaster-prone areas: Nawakerti, Jungutan, Buana Giri, Sebudi, Besakih, Datah, Pempatan, Tulamben, Dukuh, Kubu, Baturinggit, and Ban. “People from the 12 disasterprone villages have been evacuated to emergency camps in nearby districts,” the authorities revealed. The PVMBG, on its website, has called on the people to remain alert about the volcanic mud that flows from the rivers on Mount Agung. “Despite the potential danger, people living outside the disaster-prone villages may go about their business as usual, but they need to stay vigilant and follow the instructions is s ued by the authority,” it stressed. Electricity consumption growth target of PLN downs in 2018

DENPASAR — Based on the record, the electricity consumption growth in Bali during the period of 2014-2016 reached 8-9 percent. Moreover, in 2016 the growth reached 11 percent. According to the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) of 20172026, the average electricity consumption growth is targeted at 8.5 percent.

However, in 2017 an anomaly occurred that electricity consumption decreases. For the first time, the growth of electricity consumption in Bali is minus of 0.05 percent. This becomes consideration of PLN Bali Distribution to the electricity consumption in 2018 targeted to grow at 6.5 percent. General Manager of PLN Bali Distribution, I Nyoman Suwarjoni Astawa, said the declining electricity consumption in 2017 happened due to saving money awareness of Balinese people and volcanic activities of Mount Agung. Public awareness has increased against the use of electricity. Psychologically, people make savings after hearing the news on electricity tariff increase. In addition, currently there has been a lot of electricityefficient equipment. Throughout 2017 it rained that made the temperature not too hot. This caused the use of air conditioning to decrease. This caused the decrease in household consumption. In terms of hotel consumption, it also decreased. “I do not know if hotels make savings in terms of lamps or whether it happened due to differences in behavior of the in-house guests,” he said. Based on the analysis in 2016, the number one position of foreign tourists visiting Bali is Australia, while in 2017, the number one position was occupied by China. “We do not know their behavior while living in Bali, whether they spend more time outside the hotel or staying inside to enjoy hotel facilities,” he explained. Seeing that condition, in 2018 PLN targets the growth of electricity consumption at 6.5 percent. The efforts made are by simplifying the power add-on and new installation services. “We serve as soon as possible,” he said. In addition, in 2018 he hoped that all regions in Bali can enjoy electricity by expanding access to electricity and building network. Everyone who was evacuated from their homes, has faced myriad challenges. Now with some many people having returned homes, many challenges have been resolved or least lessened. The evacuation post at the International Kindergarten and Elementary School in Kubu Villgae, Bangli for example has had a leaky roof since people were first evacuated to this building. Although the leaking here is not as bad as in other evacuations posts, like one in Rendang where evacuees found all there belongings soaking-wet after every heavy rains, a leaky roof is never

pleasant to deal with. As one evacuee named I Negah Suwanda from Kesimpar hamlet, Besakih, Rendang, explained on Friday (Jan. 19), there has been a leak in the Bima II Building since he arrived there four months ago. “At that time it was quite crowded here as there were also evacuees from Keladian hamlet, Muncan and Kesimpar hamlet. My bed happened to be right under one of the leaks, so every time it rained hard, I had to move my bed over to one side”, he explained, adding that now that so many evacuees have gone home, he and his family moved to another part of the building where there is no leak”. “I reported the leak to the evacuation post coordinator who arranged

for repairs to be done, But since so many evacuees were going home right around the time the repairs were going to be done, the repair job was cancelled”, added Suwanda. Now there are only about 6 families (20 people) in this evacuation post but we still hope the leaks will be repaired”, he said. Another evacuee seeking refuge at the Bima II Building named Ni Kadek Kepir from Angsoka hamlet, Besakih, said that there are four leaks in the building but the one in the center is the worst. “There used to be a family living there but now that there is more room here, they have moved to another part of the building, and we just put buckets and towels down when it rains”, she said. JOHANNESBURG - Leaders of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC)met on Saturday to outline the party’s programme for the coming year amid reports that its executive planned to force Jacob Zuma to quit as the country’s president. An ANC spokeswoman declined to comment on a report by broadcaster eNCA saying that its newly-elected National Executive Committee (NEC) had resolved to ask Zuma - whose presidency has been hit by corruption allegations - to resign. If Zuma refused, he would be forced to step down by the party’s six-strong leadership group, eNCA said. An anonymous member of the NEC - which met for the first time under new ANC leader Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday and Friday - was quoted by online news site News24 as saying the decision to force Zuma to resign had been unanimous. The NEC made no mention of Zuma’s possible early exit in a statement after the first two days of a four-day meeting. “We can’t confirm rumours of things that we don’t know. The NEC has issued a statement on the totality of discussions yesterday,”

an ANC spokeswoman said.

DIVIDED PARTY Zuma retains the support of one part of the ANC leadership, but many others in the party argue that he has tarnished the image of Africa’s oldest liberation movement. While he has been in office, the economy has also slowed to a near-standstill. Ramaphosa succeeded Zuma as ANC head last month, making him likely to replace Zuma as the country’s next president. The party’s Secretary-General Ace Magashule said on Thursday that Zuma’s early removal as head of state was not on the agenda of the NEC meeting, which runs until Sunday. But in recent days Ramaphosa has gone on the offensive against companies controlled by the Gupta family, businessmen friends of Zuma accused of unduly using political connections to win work with the state. AZAZ - Turkish ground forces pushed into northern Syria’s Afrin province on Sunday, the army said, after Turkey launched artillery and air strikes on a U.S.-backed Kurdish militia it aims to sweep from its border. The Syrian-Kurdish YPG militia, supported by the United States but seen as a terrorist organisation by Turkey, said it had repulsed the Turkish forces and their allies after fierce clashes. It marked the second day of fighting after Ankara opened a new front in the nearly seven-year-old Syrian war. Under what the Turkish government has called “Operation Olive Branch”, Turkish air strikes on Saturday pounded YPG positions in Afrin. Turkey is targeting the U.S.backed fighters at a time when ties with ally Washington appear close to breaking point. Jan von Gerich, economist at Nordea Markets, suggests ECB President Mario Draghi will sound a shade less optimistic than in December to convince markets that the next rate hike is not coming sooner and to stop the euro from rising further. “We expect to see some downside pressure on the euro and bond yields in response to the ECB’s immediate message next week,” he said in a note on Thursday. Harm Bandholz, chief U.S. economist of UniCredit, tempers the optimism, saying a range of factors, including inventories, trade, oil and the savings rate, are providing temporary boosts and will fade. They were enthusiastic to walk from Dalem Temple to Beji Cengcengan Temple of Sukawati village bordered with Guwang village. Sacred value of this tradition lies in the purpose of mepeed namely picking up holy water at Taman Beji Temple. Furthermore, this holy water will be used for ritual in the temple anniversary that lasted for four days until Friday (Dec. 29). “So during the pujawali, the mapeed procession is held every day in the afternoon,” said Chief of Sukawati customary village, I Nyoman Suwantha, on Tuesday. BRUSSELS - After hitting a three-year high against the dollar, the strong euro is likely to preoccupy global markets and European Central Bank policymakers in particular in the coming week. The ECB, whose Governing Council meets on Thursday, last expressed concern over the single currency in September, when it said exchange rate volatility was an uncertainty that required “monitoring”. Then the euro had only briefly nudged beyond $1.20. In the last week it has surpassed $1.23, and is now some 4 percent higher than when ECB policymakers met in December, although on a trade-weighted basis the euro’s rise is not as steep. Its January surge followed the release of minutes from the December ECB meeting showing the bank intended to revisit its policy message in early 2018, prompting markets to price in a 70 percent chance of a rise in interest rates by the end of the year. The ECB last hiked rates in 2011. Reuters reported on Wednesday that the ECB was unlikely to ditch its pledge to keep buying bonds at its January meeting. Public comments in the past week show its policymakers are growing more alert to the euro’s strength. Vice-President Vitor Constancio said that, while the ECB did not have an exchange rate target, he was concerned by sudden movements that did not reflect changes in fundamentals. Plecing Gonda … Wow It’s Quite Delicious Vegetable Speaking about Balinese traditional culinary traditions will never end. One of the menus having not been widely known is plecing gonda (gooseweed with hot spices). However, in one region, this type of green vegetable sometimes becomes favorite food. Moreover, it is processed in a simple manner. It just needs to be boiled and then mixed with tomato seasoning and fried onion to make the taste very delicious. It offers typical and tempting aroma. Plecing gonda has become a typical food for Balinese community. This vegetable menu is very close to farmers living in countryside. Other than easy to get the ingredient, the preparation is also easy. Simply fill with spices in the form of garlic, chili, large chili peppers, tomatoes, shrimp paste, lemon and salt to taste, plecing gonda is already tasted different from other vegetables. The preparation is not too complicated. Ingredient in the form of gonda is boiled until cooked. All spices are cleaned, pulverized until subsequently fried, except for lemon. Well, the serving of gonda having been boiled is spiced and

then mixed until finely blended. To give a distinctive taste, it can be provided with grated kaffir lime. Other than by boiling, this gooseweed vegetable can also be cooked by stir-frying. This type of plant is actually a weed plant, but taken advantage by farmers as a daily food. It is planted on the sidelines of paddy plants (by intercropping), so it does not require a large area. Harvest time is also very short namely about 20-25 days. The color is green. It does not need to be sprayed with chemicals, so the gonda is free from chemicals. (kmb)

At least five dead in attack on Kabul’s Intercontinental Hotel

KABUL - Gunmen dressed in army uniforms who stormed Kabul’s Intercontinental Hotel battled Afghan Special Forces for 13 hours in an overnight siege that left at least five people dead, officials and witnesses said on Sunday. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which saw more than 150 guests flee, with some shimmying down tied-together sheets from upper-floor windows and others rescued by Afghan forces. Abdul Rahman Naseri, a guest who was at the hotel for a conference, was in the hall of the hotel when he saw four insurgents dressed in army uniforms. “They were shouting in Pashto (language), ‘Don’t leave any of them alive, good or bad. Shoot and kill them all,’ one of them shouted,” Naseri said. “I ran to my room on the second floor. I opened the window and tried to get out using a tree but the branch broke and I fell to the ground. I hurt my back and broke a leg.” Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish said the siege ended on Sunday when the last gunman was shot dead. Even after officials said the attack was over, sporadic gunshots and explosions could be heard from the site. It is unclear exactly how many gunmen were involved. Danish said three gunmen were killed, while witnesses said four were involved and the Taliban said five. At least five other people were killed and six wounded, a lower casualty total than earlier feared, while 153 people, including 41 foreigners were evacu-

The raid was the latest in a long series of attacks which have underlined the city’s precarious situation and the ability of militants to mount high profile operations aimed at undermining confidence in the Western-backed government. As day broke on Sunday, thick clouds of black smoke could be seen pouring from the building. Several armoured U.S. military vehicles with heavy machine guns could be seen close to the hotel along with Afghan police units. Hotel manager Ahmad Haris Nayab, who escaped unhurt, said the attackers had got into the main part of the hotel through a kitchen before going through the hotel, with many guests trapped in their rooms. “When the sixth floor caught fire this morning, my roommate told me, either burn or escape,” said Mohammad Musa, who was hiding in his room on the top floor when he heard gunfire. “I got a bed sheet and tied it to the balcony. I tried to come down but I was heavy and my arms were not strong enough. I fell down and injured my shoulder and leg.” The raid came just days after a U.S. embassy warning of possible attacks on hotels in Kabul. The Intercontinental Hotel, an imposing 1960s structure set on a hilltop and heavily protected like most public buildings in Kabul, was previously attacked by Taliban fighters in 2011. It is one of two main luxury hotels in the city and had been due to host an information technology conference on Sunday. Japan explores cooperation on Citarum river conservation

BOGOR - Japan is exploring cooperation with Indonesia on the conservation of Citarum River in West Java as part of a number of project agreements between the two countries, according to Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi. Minister Marsudi accompanied President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to receive the special envoy, Toshihiro Nikai, sent by Japanese Prime Minister Toshihiro Nikai, along with his delegation, at the Bogor Presidential Palace on Friday. Environmental cooperation was among the topics discussed during a bilateral meeting, including the exploration of the conservation of Citarum River, which still needs a separate formulation. “The deputy of the Japanese environment minister will visit Citarum River for a preliminary assessment of conservation cooperation,” Marsudi noted. President Jokowi has ordered an immediate revitalization of the longest and largest river in West Java, considering its vital role in upholding the livelihood of the people. Citarum River is the source of drinking water for 27.5 million people living in West Java and Jakarta and the source of irrigation for 420 thousand hectares of rice fields. Three hydropower plants--Saguling, Cirata, and Jatiluhur---which can produce 1,400MW of electricity, also get their energy source from the Citarum streams. Maritime Affairs Coordinating Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has expressed his commitment to restoring Citarum River after it was heavily polluted by waste from domestic and textile industries. The minister has sought to clean the river so that within the next five to 10 years, starting from this year, people will be able to use water directly from the river. Endangered orangutan shot before being decapitated in Indonesia JAKARTA - A critically endangered Bornean orangutan found dead in Indonesia’s Central Kalimantan province on Monday died three days earlier from air rifle wounds before it was decapitated, Indonesia’s Centre for Orangutan Protection said. Authorities previously said the great ape appeared to have been stabbed multiple times in the latest in a string of unnatural orangutan deaths on the island to which they are native. A necropsy carried out by police and the centre found 17 air rifle bullets in the male orangutan corpse, “proving” it died because of humans, said Ramadhani, the center’s habitat protection manager. “Our strong suspicion is that this orangutan died because it was shot using an air rifle through the heart, lungs and stomach,” he said in a statement on the center’s website. Data from the Centre for Orangutan Protection shows more than 15 of the creatures had been killed by humans or found dead in unnatural circumstances since 2011. SOUTH CAROLINA - Setting a potential 60 metres world record of 6.37 seconds turned out to be just part of the challenge for American Christian Coleman. With no drug testing at the meeting in South Carolina on Friday, Coleman drove towards Atlanta, Georgia, two hours away, to meet testers at a road side stop, provide a required sample and fill out paperwork as a part of the record ratification. But questions remain as to whether the run will be ratified as a world record. Electronic starting blocks, along with doping testing, are two of the requirements for a world record, USA Track and Field official Duffy Mahoney told Reuters on Saturday. But Mark Elliott, the head coach at Clemson University, where world silver medallist Coleman ran, said while the blocks used in

the race were certified they were not electronic, which is typical for college meetings. “All I can tell you is he ran the world record time,” Elliott told Reuters. “It was an amazing run .... almost unbelievable.” Mahoney said it would be up to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) to determine record ratification. The IAAF was not available for immediate comment. Mahoney, USATF’s chief of sport performance, said he would decide on Monday whether to forward the performance to the global governing body for possible ratification. He said it was also possible Coleman’s mark could become an American record even if the IAAF does not ratify it because the organisations have different criteria. Coleman’s time bettered the

recognised world record of 6.39 seconds, first set 20 years ago by 2000 Olympic champion Maurice Greene. Whether Coleman gains the world record, he and his management team worked hard to ensure the possibility. “The race took six seconds but we have been at it for six hours to get the testing done,” Coleman’s agent Emanuel Hudson told Reuters after shepherding the process through several phone calls and even live social media from his California office.
