LOS ANGELES — Sylvester Stallone and his beefy buddies have muscled their way to the top of the weekend box office. Stallone’s action hero roundup “The Expendables 2” debuted at No. 1 with $28.8 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. That’s down from the $34.8 million start for “The Expendables” two years ago.

The Lionsgate sequel elbowed out another action tale as Universal’s “The Bourne Legacy” fell to No. 2 in its second weekend with $17 million. That was a steep 55 percent drop from its $38.1 million opening weekend, though the movie’s domestic total climbed to a solid $69.6 million. Three other wide releases opened to modest business. Focus Features’ animated comedy “ParaNorman, about a boy leading the fight against zombies that rise from the grave, was No. 3 with $14 million. Sony’s music remake “Sparkle,” featuring “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks and Whitney Houston, was No. 5 with $12 million. The update of the 1976 movie centers on three sisters who form a singing group in the late 1960s. Disney’s family fantasy “The Odd Life of Timothy Green” was No. 7 with $10.9 million. The movie stars Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton as a childless couple who become instant parents to a boy that magically appears in their lives. The newcomers and holdovers combined to lift Hollywood’s overall
Madonna sued in Russia for supporting gays Associated Press Writer
MOSCOW — Some Russian activists have sued Madonna for millions of dollars, claiming they were offended by her support for gay rights during a recent concert in St. Petersburg. Anti-gay sentiment is strong in Russia. In St. Petersburg, a law passed in February makes it illegal to promote homosexuality to minors, and the author of that law has pointed to the presence of children as young as 12 at Madonna’s concert on Aug. 9. Russian news agencies quote Alexander Pochuyev, a lawyer representing the nine activists, as saying the suit was filed Friday against Madonna, the organizer of her concert, and the hall
where it was held, asking for damages totaling 333 million rubles, or nearly $10.5 million. Responding to criticism that the plaintiffs were stuck in the Middle Ages, the lawyer said they were using civilized, modern methods to defend their rights. “No one is burning anyone at the stake or carrying out an Inquisition,” Pochuyev was quoted by RIA Novosti as saying. “Modern civilization requires tolerance and respect for different values.” The complaint includes a video taken at the concert showing Madonna stomping on an Orthodox cross and asking fans to raise their hands to show the pink armbands in support of gays and lesbians that were distributed among the audience,
the new agency reported. Madonna’s spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg, did not immediately respond to emails asking for the singer’s reaction to the lawsuit. Madonna also has angered conservative Russians with her support for Pussy Riot. Three members of the punk band were sentenced Friday to two years in prison for a protest inside Moscow’s main cathedral against Vladimir Putin and his cozy relationship with the Russian Orthodox Church. Madonna spoke out in support of the group during her concert in St. Petersburg and two days earlier in Moscow. After the verdict was issued, Madonna called on “all those who love freedom to condemn this unjust punishment.”
business. Domestic revenues totaled $139 million, up 12 percent from the same weekend last year, when “The Help” led with $20 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com. Business had been down the previous three weekends this summer, which has fallen short of the record-setting business many studio executives were predicting at the start of the season. Since the first weekend of May, revenues total $3.9 billion, down 5 percent from last summer’s, when Hollywood finished with an all-time high of $4.4 billion for the season, according to Hollywood.com.
Moratorium on tourist accomodation just a ‘paper tiger’ IBP/File
Bali Post
DENPASAR - Measures of Bali Government to terminate the development of tourist accommodation in Badung, Gianyar and Denpasar are still glanced at one eye. This moratorium policy is just like a ‘paper tiger’ as unable to stem the development in three regions. Weak law enforcement on the moratorium is also revealed in the seminar entitled “Critical Analysis of Bali Development to Achieve People’s Welfare” held in the Postgraduate Studies Hall of the Udayana University. Chairman of the Center for Culture and Tourism Research, Udayana University, Agung Suryawan Wiranatha, PhD., on that occasion stated that tourism development in Bali needed to be balanced between the South and North, West and East Bali. On that account, there should be political will of the government to manage the new investment
in tourism sector in order to be placed outside the regions. To that end, the government had issued a moratorium to discontinue the construction of star hotels. Unfortunately, in practice the policy had not been able to stem the hotel construction. “The moratorium issued by the government is widely got around.
The hotels established after the issuance of moratorium are no longer star hotel, but condotel and rental house. Therefore, they are classified into non-star hotel,” he revealed. Suryawan Wiranatha explained the effort to get around the moratorium was known by counting the total growth in the number of star hotel rooms. In 2009, the
total hotel rooms in Bali reached 46,000 and until 2011 there was an increase of about 16,000 rooms or totally reached 62,000. By region, the Badung Regency was ranked first namely reaching 77 percent. However, the chart growth of star hotel in Badung declined to 74 percent. Nevertheless, in terms of the non-star hotel growth in 2011, an extraordinary surge of 54 percent occurred in Badung Regency, while the growth in 2009 was only 41 percent. “The number of star and non-star hotel rooms in 2000 was almost balanced, but suddenly surged where the non-star hotel was much higher than star hotel. In our opinion, it is strange because
capital owners from outside usually invest to build star hotels in Bali, but why do they build many nonstar hotels? It is a strategy to get around the rules,” he said. According to him, classification of hotel in general could be divided into star hotel, non-star hotel/budget hotel and home stay. But since the government issued a moratorium for star hotel, new terms then arose, namely condotel and rental house. Both accommodations could only be found in Badung Regency categorized into non-star hotel. “Since there was a moratorium banning the establishment of star Continued on page 6

JAKARTA — An Indonesian government official says a powerful weekend earthquake that jolted a northern island has killed four
villagers and left a dozen others injured. Sutopo Purwo Nugroho of Indonesia’s Disaster Management Agency said Monday at least four people were killed by falling debris,
including a 9-year-old boy. Twelve others were hospitalized with cuts and broken bones. The magnitude-6.3 quake struck Saturday evening 56 kilometers (35 miles) southeast of Palu city
on Sulawesi Island as residents were ending their fast on the final day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The official says the earthquake damaged 165 houses and buildings
in Parigi Mountong and Sigi, the closest districts to the epicenter. Indonesia is part of an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin and prone to earthquakes.
