Taylor Swift’s ‘Reputation’ sales soar, but Adele keeps her crown
LOS ANGELES - Taylor Swift’s new album “Reputation” has sold more than one million copies in its first four days, Nielsen Music said on Tuesday, but the U.S. pop star failed to beat the record set by Britain’s Adele two years ago.
Swift’s 1.05 million U.S. sales of “Reputation” came despite the singer keeping the album from streaming services and gave her the best-selling album of 2017. But the figure was less than half the monster sales for the debut of Adele’s “25” album, which surpassed 2.43 million copies in the first four days of release in November 2015 and smashed a 15year-old U.S. record set by boy band NSync in 2000. Adele also initially kept “25” from streaming services. Swift, 27, recording on Nashville-based independent label Big Machine Records, now has four
albums that have sold more than one million copies in their first week -- “1989,” “Red,” and “Speak Now.” “Reputation,” her first studio album in three years, marked another transformation for Swift with songs marked by vengeance that take aim at the media and some of her haters. Full first week sales will be available next week, when “Reputation” will top the Billboard 200 album chart. Swift this week announced the first U.S. dates of what is expected to be a world tour to promote the album. (rtr)

GENEVA - An emerald and diamond necklace set with the largest flawless white diamond ever to come to auction has sold for a world record 33.5 million Swiss francs ($34 million), the star lot at a Geneva sale, Christie’s said. The necklace, known as the Art of de GRISOGONO, Creation 1, has a rectangular diamond weighing 163.41 carats as its centrepiece. The stone, found in Angola in 2016, is framed on one side by rows of diamonds and on the other by pearshaped emeralds. The buyer, bidding by telephone at Tuesday night’s sale, will remain anonymous, Christie’s said in a statement. The pre-sale estimate was $25 million to $30 million. The diamond is more than 40
percent larger than a flawless white oval diamond of 118.28 carats sold by rival Sotheby’s in 2013 in Hong Kong for $30.6 million, yet the price fails to reflect that, said Tobias Kormind, managing director of 77Diamonds.com, Europe’s largest online diamond jeweller. “This is a worrying sign for the top end of the diamond market suggesting it is not as immune as one would have hoped to downward price pressures caused by global factors such as the Chinese slowdown, Russian sanctions and lower oil prices,” he said in a statement. The second top lot was a light pink diamond that belonged to French royalty for two centuries. Weighing 19.07 carats, it fetched 14.37 million Swiss francs, roughly
double its pre-sale estimate, Christie’s said. Called Le Grand Mazarin, it takes its name from Cardinal Mazarin, who become France’s Chief Minister in 1642 and assembled a gem collection. The stone then became part of the French crown jewels. During its 250 years in the French Crown Treasury, it belonged to four kings (Louis XIV, Louis XV, Louis XVI and Charles X), two emperors (Napoleon I and Napoleon III) and two empresses, Christie’s said. It was sold to Frédéric Boucheron, one of the favoured jewellers of France’s great families, at auction in 1887 before passing into a private collection. (rtr)

ANKARA - Exhausted and exposed to freezing cold, survivors of a weekend earthquake in western Iran begged authorities for food and shelter on Tuesday, saying aid was slow to reach them. Iranian officials called off rescue operations earlier in the day on the grounds there was little chance of finding more survivors from the quake, which killed at least 530 people and injured thousands more. It was Iran’s deadliest earthquake in more than a decade. Survivors, many left homeless by Sunday’s 7.3 magnitude quake that struck villages and towns in Kermanshah province along the mountainous border with Iraq, struggled through another bleak day on Tuesday in need of food, water and shelter. Iran has so far declined offers of foreign assistance to deal with the aftermath of the tremor, which officials said damaged 30,000 homes and completely destroyed two villages. The U.S. government expressed its condolences, a White House spokesman said. “The United States expresses its sincere sympathy and condolences to those affected by the earthquake in northern Iraq and Iran,” he said, adding Washington had not received requests from the Iraqi government for help. U.S. President Donald Trump, who is travelling back to Washington after a trip
to Asia, has been deeply critical of Iran. “We are hungry. We are cold. We are homeless. We are alone in this world,” a weeping Maryam Ahang, who lost 10 members of her family in the hardest hit town of Sarpol-e Zahab, told Reuters by telephone. “My home is now a pile of mud and broken tiles. I slept in the park last night. It is cold and I am scared.” Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urged state agencies on Tuesday to speed up aid efforts. President Hassan Rouhani paid a visit to the stricken region, promising to resolve “the problems in the shortest time”. Thousands of people huddled in makeshift camps while many others chose to spend another cold night in the open because they feared more tremors after some 230 aftershocks. In some areas, no building was left standing and those that were had been
deserted for fear they could come crashing down at any moment. Houses in impoverished Iranian villages are often made of concrete blocks or mudbrick that can quickly crumble and collapse in a strong quake. State television aired footage of weeping villagers carrying away bodies wrapped in bloodied blankets and bed sheets and scrabbling with their bare hands through rubble in search of friends and relatives.
