Pokemon Go’s Niantic taps ‘Harry Potter’ magic for new AR game LOS ANGELES - Fantastic beasts, wizard adventures and magic spells will come to life in a new “Harry Potter” augmented reality mobile game from Pokemon Go developer Niantic Inc and Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment, the companies said on Wednesday. “Harry Potter: Wizards Unite” will bring author J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World to mobile phones and use augmented reality (AR) to create a real-world scavenger hunt, allow players to cast spells, find artifacts, team up and encounter magical beasts and characters from the popular book series. The game’s use of real locations is similar to Niantic and Nintendo Co Ltd’s Pokemon Go, which became the first mass market adoption of AR in July 2016 and allows players to “catch” animated characters that appeared in their real surroundings. No release date was given for the “Harry Potter” game, but Niantic and Time Warner Inc’s Warner Bros said more details would be available next year. Warner Bros Pictures, which produced the $7.7 billion-grossing “Harry Potter” film franchise, will release “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2” in November 2018, the second installment in a new series of films that expand the world Rowling created in her Potter franchise. The series is among the first projects the iPhone maker has acquired for its plunge into original television programming, where it aims to compete with established players such as Netflix Inc and Time Warner Inc’s HBO. The untitled project taps top-level Hollywood talent at a time when deep-pocketed technology companies are jockeying with traditional networks to land A-list stars. It marks Aniston’s first TV show since her famous role on the hit
comedy “Friends” ended in 2004. Witherspoon, who appeared on “Friends” as Aniston’s younger sister, recently starred in and served as a producer of the Emmy-winning HBO series “Big Little Lies.” Apple spokeswoman Rita Cooper Lee also confirmed the company had ordered a remake of Steven Spielberg’s 1980s science fiction anthology series “Amazing Stories.” News of a potential deal for the Spielberg show had emerged in October.
It is unclear when the shows will be released or where viewers will be able to see them. Apple has not divulged if it will put its own TV series in the iTunes Store, where it sells shows made by other companies, or on another platform. Aniston and Witherspoon will among be the show’s executive producers. It will be produced by Media Res, a studio founded by former HBO executive Michael Ellenberg. (rtr)

Stop exploiting Mount Agung for tourism local leader speaks out on sanctity
AMLAPURA - Mount Agung’s volcanic activity has begun to calm down. Many people however feel that the almost two months of level IV warning status for the great volcano was a sign that something is wrong with the way people have been treating the highest mountain in Bali- particularly with regards to tourism. Increasing numbers of people are calling for Mount Agung to be closed to tourism. One of Karangasem’s community leaders, Jro Wayan Mas Suyasa, said on Wednesday (Nov. 8) that Bali’s Mount Agung is not the same as other volcanoes in Indonesia. As the name Mount Agung (majestic mountain), with an altitude of 3,142 meters above sea level is deservedly exalted. “Do not think that Mount Agung is just made of stone, Mount Agung has a soul”, said Jro Wayan Mas Suyasa. According to Jro Suyasa and others, because Mount Agung is a sacred mountain, it should be treated as such. We should not let just anyone climb to the summit, especially if they do come with inappropriate purposes or intentions. The local government must be wise in how they look at Mount Agung and its sacredness must be well-maintained. It must not just be used to increase the regionally gen-
erated revenue (PAD). “If people are visiting the mountain for the sake of rituals, I don’t’ think it is a problem, but if it for tourism, I think it should be stopped” he said. Suyasa said that he has disagreed with Mount Agung being used for tourism climbing activities for a ling time as has asked Balinese people to be aware of and practice the concept Tri Hita Karana (harmonious relations with fellow
humans, the environment and with the divine) especially harmonious relations between humans and the natural surroundings. He admitted that geologically speaking a volcano is bound to erupt sometimes, but added that in fact nobody wants such a disaster to occur. Therefore is also asked that Balinese people keep praying for the people that live around Mount Agung be spared of such a disaster. Accord-
ing to Jro Suyasa, the threat of Mount Agung erupting is a way for God to show off greatness, omnipotence and majesty. God’s majesty is unpredictable even to man-made technology. “Many (climbers) are proud of conquering Mount Agung, but what are they conquering?”, he asked. The term ‘conquering, he said, is not appropriate. A mountain is not be conquered but to be preserved – both its sacredness and its eco-system, he emphasized. Gumang shold not become a tourist attraction Mount Agung is not the only place in Bali that Jro Suyasa thinks should be closed to tourism. He explained that every sacred place on the island – including Besakih temple, should be off limits to tourism. Jro Suyasa who is also chief of
Bugbug Customary Village also believes that Gumang Temple should remain tourism-free. Although it was almost included in a list of tourist attractions in Karangasem, he and others opposed the idea. Chief Jro Suyasa and the residents of his village openly rejected the proposition when related agencies came to Bugbug to inform the villagers about how to set up a Pokdarwis (local tourism management group) recently.
