TIMIKA — Gunmen shot and killed three miners in the latest attack near the world’s largest gold mine in eastern Indonesia, officials said Saturday. Attackers also fired on a patrol car wounded en route to investigate, wounding a soldier and a civilian guard. Four Indonesian miners who worked for the U.S. company Freeport were hit by unknown gunmen as their car traveled along a road to the mining complex on Friday in restive Papua province, local deputy police chief Maj. Mada Indra Laksanta said. The attackers also set their car ablaze, he said. Hours later, gunshots were fired at a patrol car trying to approach the burned car. A soldier and a civilian guard were wounded. Police found the bodies of three miners near their car, and they are still searching for another miner unaccounted for. Friday’s shooting came less than a week after Indonesian security forces fired on striking workers at the one of world’s largest gold and copper mine, killing one and injuring more than a dozen other people. But police declined to link Friday’s shooting with the workers strike that kicked off on Sept. 15. The strikers are demanding that their pay, which ranges from $2.10 to $3.50 per hour, be increased to between $17.50 and $43 per hour. Continued on page 6

He exemplified the earthquake hitting Bali seemed to have been exaggerated. As consequence, it raised many questions among the tourists. If the impact of the natural disaster could not be hushed, it would be feared to threaten the tourism industry. To minimize the impact of natural disasters on tourism, Ismoyo expected that government could serve as public relations that were ready to provide information to the public and tourists. On that account, it would not result in panic among the tourists when natural disaster occurred.

Thailand fought to hold back floodwaters flowing towards Bangkok Saturday as a spring tide hindered efforts to protect the city of 12 million people from the kingdom’s worst inundation in decades. Inner Bangkok, which is ringed by floodwalls, has so far escaped major flooding, leaving areas outside the main city to bear the brunt of the rising waters. “We must try to protect our economic zone including Bangkok, Suvarnabhumi Airport, industrial areas and evacuation centres,” said Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. Sandbags have been piled alongside rivers and canals and the authorities have been racing to repair a dyke that burst on Thursday, causing a brief scare in suburbs in the north of the capital. The floods, several metres deep in places, are currently affecting about one third of Thailand’s provinces and have damaged the homes or livelihoods of millions of people and left at least 297 people dead. About 110,000 people around the country have sought refuge in shelters in the face of waters that have destroyed crops and inundated hundreds of factories in industrial parks north of Bangkok. “People have been affected by floods for three months now. The government understands that and is trying to drain the water as soon as possible,” Yingluck said. “This incident is one of Thailand’s biggest and most severe losses in history. The government will not forget the people’s grievances.” She said foreign governments including China, Japan and the United States were giving financial or logistical support for the relief operations. The United States sent a military transport aircraft from Japan carrying thousands of sandbags and 10 US Marines as part of a survey team to assess how to help Thailand cope with the flooding, the US embassy said. The US was also understood to have agreed in principle to send 26 helicopters to help search for stranded victims.

Wall Street protests go global; riots hit Rome Reuters

ROME - Anti-greed protesters rallied globally on Saturday, denouncing bankers and politicians over the international economic crisis, with violence rocking Rome where cars were torched and bank windows smashed. Galvanized by the Occupy Wall Street movement, protests began in New Zealand, touched parts of Asia, spread to Europe, and resumed at their starting point in New York with 5,000 marchers decrying corporate greed and economic inequality. After weeks of intense media coverage, U.S. protests have still been smaller than G20 meetings or political conventions have yielded in recent years. Such events often draw tens of thousands of demonstrators. The demonstrations by the disaffected coincided with the Group of 20 meeting in Paris, where finance ministers and central bankers from major economies were holding talks on the debt and deficit crises afflicting many Western countries. T h e O c c u p y Wa l l S t re e t movement has gathered steam for a month, culminating with

the global day of action. It remains unclear what momentum the movement, which has been driven by social media, has beyond Saturday. While most rallies were relatively small and barely held up traffic, the Rome event drew tens of thousands of people and snaked through the city center for miles (kilometers). Hundreds of hooded, masked demonstrators rampaged in some of the worst violence seen in the Italian capital in years, setting cars ablaze, breaking bank and shop windows and destroying traffic lights and

signposts. Police fired volleys of tear gas and used water cannon to try to disperse militant protesters who were hurling rocks, bottles and fireworks, but clashes went on into the evening. Smoke bombs set off by protesters cast a pall over a sea of red flags and banners bearing slogans denouncing economic policies the protesters say are hurting the poor. The violence sent many peaceful demonstrators and local residents near the Colosseum and St John’s Basilica running into hotels and churches for safety.

TEGUCIGALPA - Torrential rain in Central America this week that forced thousands to abandon their homes and trapped many more has killed at least 45 people, with Guatemala the worst hit, authorities said on Saturday. A tropical depression hit the region early

on Wednesday, causing flooding, mudslides and lightning strikes in the chain of countries between Mexico and South America. Many areas were cut off as the rain inundated villages and clogged roads. The destructive weather system that bore down from the Pacific killed 22 in Guatemala, and nine in Honduras, two of

whom were struck by lightning, emergency services said. Hundreds were stranded on the roofs of their homes in Honduras, especially in the southern regions of Choluteca and Valle, local emergency officials said. In El Salvador, where seven people were killed, President Mauricio Funes declared a state of emer-

gency. At least seven others died and thousands more were evacuated in Nicaragua. No deaths were reported in Costa Rica, although dozens of families were evacuated from communities on the Pacific coast and the capital, San Jose. Strong rain continued to fall in parts of Honduras and Guatemala

on Saturday, while precipitation was easing in Nicaragua, El Salvador and Costa Rica. At least four people also died in Mexico earlier in the week when Category 2 Hurricane Jova struck from the Pacific, forcing the country’s busiest port to close. The main cargo port of Manzanillo later reopened.

PARIS - French left-wingers began voting on Sunday to decide who will lead their challenge to unseat President Nicolas Sarkozy in an election next year, with moderate Socialist Party veteran, Francois Hollande the favorite to win. In a U.S.-style primary, the first of its kind in France, voters will choose between Hollande, who has never held a national government post, and Martine Aubry, one-time labor minister, architect of France’s 35-hour week and daughter of the former European Commission President Jacques Delors. Opinion polls give Hollande a lead of six percentage points over Aubry in a ballot that decides which of the two will run in a presidential contest that the Socialists have not won since Francois Mitterand was re-elected in 1988. The polls suggest French voters are ready to put the left back in power after five years of conservative Sarkozy, who is unpopular but widely expected to seek another five-year term. The left’s runaway favorite to become president had been former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn but his IMF career and presidential hopes were halted when he was arrested in New ork in May on charges of sexually assaulting a hotel maid. The charges have since been dropped. The ease with which Hollande and Aubry have filled his shoes suggests that many voters are simply weary of Sarkozy and his economic policies. Voters living abroad or in some French overseas territories were first to cast their ballots and the bulk of almost 10,000 polling stations opened at 0700 GMT on mainland France. They were set to close at 1700 GMT, with preliminary results are expected a few hours later. CONCILIATORY NOTE

Hollande and Aubry sparred in the days before the primary but Aubry seized on France’s World Cup rugby semi-final win over Wales to sound a conciliatory note ahead of Sunday’s vote. “When it’s time for the post-match session, everyone parties together, she told reporters. “That’s how it’ll be on Monday. She dismissed polls that show Hollande scoring 53 percent of the vote to her 47 percent, preferring to highlight declarations of support from several prominent environmentalist politicians. In a primary inspired by the momentum that carried Barack Obama to the White House, the Socialist Party has organized a two-round contest where anyone who pays a euro and declares allegiance to left-wing values can vote. More than 2.6 million people voted in the first-round last Sunday, when anti-globalization hard-liner Arnaud Montebourg scored a surprise 17 percent.

President to install new cabinet on october 19 Antara

BOGOR - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono plans to install his newly-reshuffled cabinet on October 19, his spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said here on Saturday. “The installation will be on October 19 before we leave for Lombok,” he said after the summoning of candidates for deputy ministers at the President`s private residence. President Yudhoyono and First Lady Ani Yudhoyono are scheduled to make a working visit to Lombok on October 19 to officially open the new Mataram International airport in West Nusa Tenggara which

will be followed by a visit to Bali until October 24 so that the inauguration of the newly reshuffled cabinet would be on Wednesday morning. Julian did not say when the new cabinet lineup would be announced and the President would address the public. He only said the announcement would be made before the cabinet was installed.

Yudhoyono on Saturday evening was still summoning candidates for deputy ministers and the activity would continue until Sunday (October 16). On Monday, October 17, the President is scheduled to go to Yogyakarta in Central Java to attend the wedding of Sultan Hamengkubuwono X`s daughter and return to Jakarta on Tuesday afternoon (October 18).

Greenpeace condemns Indonesia after deportation Agence France-Presse

JAKARTA - Greenpeace on Friday accused Indonesia of waging a vendetta against the environmental group, after the head of its British branch was denied entry to Jakarta to campaign against deforestation. Greenpeace UK director John Sauven was blocked by immigration officials on arrival at Jakarta international airport Thursday evening and was sent back that night to Britain. “Parts of the government want to attack Greenpeace,” the environmental group’s Indonesia forestry campaigner Bustar Maitar told AFP. “It’s obvious that some government officials are involved,” he added. In recent years, Greenpeace has run several campaigns against Indonesia-based Sinar Mas, a privately owned paper and palm oil giant which environmental groups accuse of illegally logging swathes of carbon-rich and biodiverse forests.

Greenpeace campaigns have seen the likes of Unilever, Kraft, Burger King and Barbie maker Mattel cut supply chains from Sinar Mas companies, including Asia Pulp & Paper, one of the world’s largest paper makers. “Immigration never gave us any official notification that Sauven’s visa had been rejected. We are still trying to find out why he was deported,” Maitar said. Immigration department spokesman Maryoto Sumadi said that Sauven had been blacklisted from Indonesia on September 29, after he was issued a business visa. “We have good reasons for blacklisting him, but we cannot share them. It is the right of our country, just like any country, to deny entry to people in accordance with our national interests,” Sumadi told AFP. The British embassy in Jakarta said that a consular official was in contact with Sauven on his arrival at the airport.

“It is disappointing that Indonesia has taken this step. Indonesia has committed to reducing deforestation and enhancing sustainable forest management,” embassy spokeswoman Putri Wulan Tary said. Several Greenpeace activists and journalists were deported in 2009 as the environmental group campaigned on Sumatra’s Kampar Peninsula, where private paper company APRIL has allegedly been destroying carbon-rich peatland. Greenpeace’s campaign ship the Rainbow Warrior was denied entry into Indonesia in 2010. Greenpeace says its campaigns support President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s pledge to cut Indonesia’s carbon emissions by up to 41 percent by 2020, largely through reducing deforestation. Deforestation in Indonesia is among the fastest in the world and accounts for up to 80 percent of the country’s carbon emissions, according to Indonesia’s National Council on Climate Change.

No terrtory grabbing by Malaysia in Camar Bulan: Governor Antara

PEMANGKAT - There was no territory grabbing by Malaysia in the Camar Bulan area in Sambas district, said West Kalimantan Governor Cornelis here Saturday. He said he had studied and monitored several disputes over sections of the border between West Kalimantan and Sarawak, Malaysia. Cornelis stressed that no territory grabbing action by Malaysia had happened in Camar Bulan hamlet and Tanjung Datuk, Paloh sub-district, Sambas. “There would certainly have been incidents, if Malaysia had tried to occupy Indonesian territory because we would not have let that happen without a fight. At least, I would have resisted,” Cornelis said. The governor said he hoped Indonesia would not be disadvantaged by certain individuals` mistake and accept things that would be questioned by future generations. The recent border dispute in Camar Bulan and Tanjung Datuk area in Sambas district was just one of the various problems in the border area, he said. “There are many more problems concerning the border (with Malaysia),” Cornelis added. Cornelis also asked the people not to worry so much about the Camar Bulan polemics because the problem needed to be solved through high-level diplomacy. “To solve the dispute we need to support high level diplomacy rather than war or struggle,” he said. In the border regions, new border security officers were now working under the 1978 treaty that was also questioned recently. “The Treaty of London can set the boundaries between several European countries such as the Netherlands and United Kingdom, why such treaty cannot be implemented at Camar Bulan dispute,” Cornelis said. Cornelis added that the treaty used in determining the two countries boundary in Camar Bulan is still a memorandum of understanding nature. “So it can still be changed,” said Cornelis. Cornelis said that he would meet the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs in Jakarta on Monday (Oct 17) to discuss the Camar Bulan problems.

Scammers sell $60,000 fake Motley Crue tickets Associated Press

JAKARTA — Fake concert promoters apparently bilked Indonesian music fans out of an estimated $60,000 in ticket sales for a Motley Crue show that was never scheduled to happen, officials and news reports say. More than 1,500 people had bought tickets for $40 each by the time the scam was uncovered late last month, according to Tempo Interactive, a news website.

But unwary fans weren’t the only ones fooled by the mock promotion. Local media outlets proved equally susceptible. A Sept. 21 article in the Jakarta Globe, a local English-language paper, announced that the heavy metal group would play its first-ever show in Indonesia on Oct. 8. Band members quickly responded to the rumor as word spread through social media sites. On Twitter, drummer Tommy Lee called the fake concert the work of a “shady promoter.”

The group issued a statement on its website the day after the Globe article ran, saying no agreement for a show “in Jakarta or anywhere else in the country were ever made.” It also warned fans to be wary of any vendors advertising the nonexistent concert. But by then, tickets had been on sale for at least a month. Central Jakarta district police chief Lt. Col. Angesta Romano Yoyol said an investigation is ongoing but there are so far no suspects.

BUSINESS Thousands join NYC protest against corporate greed Associated Press

NEW YORK — From coast to coast and North to South, the Occupy Wall Street protest against corporate greed that started out with a few young people in a lower Manhattan park grew to vocal thousands with weekend rallies in about two dozen states and supporters oining in from Canada and overseas. Tens of thousands nicknamed “the indignantâ€? marched in cities across Europe on Saturday. Violence broke out in Rome and dozens were injured. In Times Square, thousands of demonstrators mixed with gawkers, Broadway showgoers, tourists and police to create a chaotic scene in the midst of Manhattan. “Banks got bailed out, we got sold out!â€? protesters chanted from within police barricades. Police, some in riot gear and mounted on horses, tried to push them out of the square and onto the sidewalks in an attempt to funnel the crowds away. Sandra Fox, 69, of Baton Rouge, La., stood, confused, on 46th Street with a ticket for “Anything Goesâ€? in her hand as riot police pushed a knot of about 200 shouting protesters toward her. “I think it’s horrible what they’re doing,â€? she said of the protesters. “These people need to go get jobs.â€? The Times Square rally lasted several hours before the crowd dispersed. Over the course of what was billed as “a global day of protest,â€? city police arrested more than 80 people in demonstrations at Times Square, Washington Square Park and a nearby Citibank bank branch. Police cited violations such as wearing masks, criminal trespass, and refusing to leave the park at midnight when police warned them it was closed. Citibank said in a statement that police asked the branch to close until the protesters could be taken away. “One person asked to close an account and was accommodated,â€? Citibank said. Earlier in the day, as many as 1,000 demonstrators paraded to a Chase bank branch, banging drums, blowing horns and carrying signs decrying corporate greed. A few protesters went inside the bank to close their accounts, but the group didn’t stop other customers from getting inside or seek to blockade the business. Lily Paulina of Brooklyn said she was taking her money out because she was upset that JPMorgan Chase was making billions, while its customers struggled with bank fees and home foreclosures. “Chase bank is making tons of money off of everyone ... while people in the working class are fighting just to keep a living wage in their neighborhood,â€? the 29-year-old United Auto Workers organizer said. Police told the marchers to stay on the sidewalk, and the demonstration seemed fairly orderly as it wound through downtown streets. Sergio Jimenez, 25, said he quit his job in Texas to come to New ork to protest. He participated in an anti-war march to mark the 10th anniversary of the Afghanistan War. “These wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were all based on lies,â€? Nearly 200 people spent a cold night in tents in Grand Circus Park in Detroit, donning gloves, scarves and heavy coats to keep warm. People are angry,â€? said Janet Hill, 49, who works for the United Steelworkers, which she said hosted a sign-making event before the march. Robert Downey, Jr. urges Hollywood: “Forgive Mel Gibson” Reuters LOS ANGELES - It was supposed to be Robert Downey Jr.’s night, but somehow Friday’s American Cinematheque Award ceremony became all about Mel Gibson. When the evening’s honoree took to the stage at the Beverly Hills Hilton to accept his doorstop, he had a clear message for Hollywood. industry pariah in the wake of taped phone calls during which he had used racial slurs and threatened to beat his estranged girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva. Prior to that, Gibson was already on thin ice with Hollywood, having made anti-Semitic remarks when he was arrested in 2006 for driving under the influence. Gibson was dropped from a cameo in “Hangover 2” after cast-members rebelled, although lately Warner Brothers has made a deal with the actordirector to explore an action film about a Biblical-era Jewish rebellion against oppressors. That too has drawn angry responses from Jewish leaders. Downey, who had well-publicized bouts with drinking and drug abuse, said that by sticking up for Gibson, he was simply returning the favor. In response, Gibson mockingly hit his head against the set. It’s not clear if the gambit worked. LOS ANGELES — Lady Gaga apparently won’t be strutting around former President Bill Clinton in steak. The pop superstar is one of several acts scheduled to perform Saturday night at a Los Angeles concert celebrating the 10th anniversary of the foundation founded by Clinton, who ditched his unhealthy eating habits for a “plant-based diet” after undergoing a quadruple bypass in 2004 and receiving stent implants to open one of the arteries from that surgery in 2010. “In deference to my diet, she’ll be going meatless that night,” Clinton joked of the envelope-pushing artist, who donned a dress made of raw meat at the MTV Video Music Awards last year. “She is the most talented person though — even if you’re an old fogey like me,” he told David Letterman on Wednesday night’s show. Other artists set to perform at “A Decade of Difference: A Concert Celebrating 10 Years of the William J. Clinton Foundation” .

*DPHPDNHUVKRSLQJWRFKDUPSOD\HUV with threequels Associated Press Writer LOS ANGELES — Cliff Bleszinski was initially hesitant to think of “Gears of War” as a trilogy. The design director at Epic Games and mastermind behind the chainsaw-slicing video game shooter series knew that gamers were a particularly judgmental bunch, especially when it comes to the interactive industry’s gluttonous strategy of constructing franchises from the ground up. “I think if you come out and say, ‘This is the start of a trilogy,’ gamers get defensive, cross their arms and say, ‘We’ll see,’” said Bleszinski. “You have to play it game by game. We had ideas of where each game could go in the series, but until we had confirmation, we never really started work on a sequel, except for coming up with pie-in-the-sky ideas.” Churning out three “Gears of War” titles over the past five years paid off. “Gears of War 3” sold more than 3 million copies in its first week and was the second best-selling game in September behind “Madden NFL 12,” propelling the entire Xbox 360 series past the $1 billion mark, according to Microsoft Corp. and NPD Group, which tracks retail game sales. Microsoft also said more than 4.5 million gamers played it online since it debuted. “For some reason, three is the magic number,” said Bleszinski of the omnipresence of trilogies in pop culture. “I can’t explain it. Narratively, they make sense

because you’ve got that ‘Lord of the Rings’ vibe where there’s a definitive beginning, middle and ending. There’s something about that contained pack-of-three that’s just incredibly gratifying.” Other game developers and publishers seem to agree, too. Sequels have always been an important part of the gaming world, but with the release of “Gears of War 3” last month and games like superhero brawler “Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds,” first-person shooter “Killzone 3,” horror shoot-’emup “F.E.A.R. 3” and alien blaster “Resistance 3” earlier this year, it seems 2011 is the year of the threequel. The trend continues this holiday season — or should that be holiday threeson? — with the arrival of such third installments as the epic action-adventure title “Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception,” bawdy open-world gang war saga “Saints Row: The Third” and explosive first-person military shooters “Battlefield 3” and “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.”

Messi’s Barca double, yet another treble for Higuain Reuters

MADRID - Gonzalo Higuain bagged a remarkable third hat-trick in two weeks to steer Real Madrid to a 4-1 win over Real Betis on Saturday while Lionel Messi’s double kept Barcelona top of La Liga with a 3-0 victory over Racing Santander. Messi, the insatiable World Player of the Year, scored in each half at the Nou Camp to take his goal tally to 10 in the league this season as Barca cruised past toothless Racing to make it 17 points from seven games. Real Madrid are a point back in second place after Messi’s Argentina team mate Higuain recorded his second consecutive La Liga treble. Having scored three against Espanyol, he then repeated the feat against Chile on international duty last week. “I’m very pleased. After having to wait so long to play, now I’m enjoying myself a lot,” the 23year-old told Spanish television, referring to the back injury that kept him out for much of last season when he lost his place to Karim Benzema. “I wasn’t playing a few weeks ago and I’m just making the most of my opportunities,” Higuain added after his second-half hat-trick against Betis took his tally of league goals to eight this season. France defender Adil Rami put Valencia ahead at Real Mallorca in the 39th minute but the visitors then conceded a stoppage-time penalty. ROME - Napoli missed the chance to top Serie A after a shock 2-1 home defeat by Parma on Saturday as champions AC Milan hit form with a 3-0 win over Palermo and Inter Milan lost at Catania. Parma’s Francesco Modesto struck the winner against Napoli eight minutes from time after Napoli’s Giuseppe Mascara had equalised following Massimo Gobbi’s 57th-minute opener. Milan’sAntonio Nocerino, scoring against his former club, Robinho and Antonio Cassano were all on target as Milan cruised past a disappointing Palermo. Napoli remain a point behind leaders Juventus, who visit Chievo Verona on Sunday, with 10 points. Parma are a further point back and 11th placed Milan are three points off top spot. Red Bull celebrate at the double Reuters

YEONGAM - Red Bull celebrated a new Formula One high on Sunday at the South Korean circuit that had marked the lowest point of their season a year ago. “That made up for last year, didn’t it?,” said a beaming team principal Christian Horner, wearing a black and gold T-shirt celebrating his team’s second successive constructors’ title. Red Bull, dismissed by some as a party team when the Austrian-based energy drink manufacturer first entered the sport, have now pulled off a ‘double double’ - sweeping both the drivers’ and constructors’ titles two years in a row. Sebastian Vettel’s 10th race win of the season, just a week after he became the sport’s young-

est ever double world champion at the age of 24, came in sharp contrast to last year’s nightmare at Yeongam. “That was the most depressing race of our entire season last year,” said Horner. “For Mark (Webber) to drive such a strong race as well, and secure our second constructors’ championship and retain it, it’s been a very special week for the team. “First of all Sebastian retaining the drivers’ in Japan and then one week later achieving what we have here in Korea is phenomenal. The whole team should be very, very proud of what they have managed to achieve.” Last year, Red Bull had arrived in Korea for the circuit’s inaugural race with Australian Webber and Vettel in a fierce five-way

title battle. After locking out the front row on the starting grid, it all went wrong in a rain-delayed race that ended in neardarkness after Webber had crashed out and Vettel suffered an engine failure while heading for victory. That remains Red Bull’s last double retirement and Vettel’s last failure to score. Only seven teams have won back-to-back constructors’ championships in the history of Formula One and Red Bull have done it as a nonmanufacturer owned entry. “I think it’s very special, because when you do it for the first time there’s all the emotion of having achieved it and done it for the first time,” said Horner. “To go into the season as the reigning world champion driver and constructor there’s that expectation and pres-

sure to retain it and what I’m especially pleased with is the way the team has dealt with that pressure. “The team has improved in all areas and we are a stronger unit than we were 12 months ago,” added the Briton. “I think the whole team has just worked in total harmony. and that enables you to achieve the kind of results we have today.” Last year’s first title killed off the idea of Red Bull being anything less than serious. Despite that, some still condemned them as nothing more than a drinks company in a world of car makers and engineering heritage. “For a drinks manufacturer to win two world championships in the constructors and two drivers’, it’s not looking too bad,” grinned Horner.

Stoner savours second MotoGP title Reuters

PHILLIP ISLAND - Birthday boy Casey Stoner breathed a sigh of relief on Sunday after surviving a drama-filled day to seal his second MotoGP championship with his fifth successive Australian Grand Prix victory. Stoner started the day feeling queasy at the news of rival Jorge Lorenzo’s severely injured finger and finished it under immense pressure as driving wind and rain sent riders scattering like nine-pins in the latter stages of the race. With Lorenzo ruled out of the race and in hospital for plastic surgery, the Australian was a shoo-in to seal the title with two races to spare but had to survive the odd hairraising wobble in the final laps. “Phillip Island doesn’t let you go home without a wet session and we got it during the race unfortunately,” the 26-year-old told reporters after late rain showers turned the corners into something of a lottery. “I’ve gone into that last turn and as soon as I’ve cracked that throttle again, the rear came around and my heart was up in my throat.” Ston-

er, an intensely-driven rider not given to major displays of emotion, beamed on the podium as he sprayed champagne over a cheering crowd and rated the title-sealing race as one of the best of his career. But he would be happy to never celebrate have another birthday at Phillip Island, he said, despite passing them with success on the race weekend. “It’d be nice to have a birthday at home one day,” said Stoner, who talked of a post-retirement future taking over his father’s farm and is looking forward to the birth of his first child in a few months.
