“Beauty and the Beast” launch begins as Disney pulls film from Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia stood by its decision to bar “Beauty and the Beast” from cinemas without a “gay moment” being cut as the worldwide rollout of the Walt Disney movie began on Thursday. Starring Emma Watson as young Belle who falls in love with the Beast, the film features a gay character for the first time in Disney’s history. The company refused to make the cut and pulled the film from cinemas across the Muslim-majority country where homosexuality is discouraged by religious leaders. “The film has not been and will not be cut for Malaysia,” Disney said in a statement. Asked it Malaysia would change its mind on its demand for the cut, Censorship Board chairman Abdul Halim Abdul Hamid said: “Still the same decision.” He added that local distributors had asked for a review of the decision. The board is expected to meet on Tuesday. The film opened in neighbouring Singapore on Thursday with a “parental guidance” rating. The world rollout happens over the next few days. Last year, Singapore organisers of the musical “Les Miserables” cut a scene in which two male actors kissed so that the show could retain a “general” rating and reach a wider audience. The Communications Office of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore warned viewers about

the likely content of “Beauty and the Beast”. “With extensive media reports of the purported ‘gay moment’ in this movie, we believe that parents must discern and reflect with their children on whether the lifestyle portrayed is consonant with the teaching of Christ,” it said in a statement. In next-door Indonesia, which has the world’s largest Muslim population, the movie opens on Friday with a 13+ classification and without any cuts. Some Islamic groups in Indonesia have launched protests targeting western entertainment in the past, leading to the cancellation for instance of a performance by pop star Lady Gaga in 2012. The movie opens in China and India on Friday. In India, it has been given a U/A rating which means unrestricted public showing but with guidance for children under 12. The gay character in the liveaction remake of the 1991 animated version has sparked calls among some ultra-conservative groups around the world for a boycott. A U.S. evangelist preacher said last week that the film was trying to promote an LGBT agenda to children. (rtr)

Indonesia says British cruise ship must pay for coral damage

LOS ANGELES - “Beauty and the Beast” star Emma Watson is planning legal action over photos said to have been leaked online, but her representatives on Wednesday denied reports that the pictures showed the British actress nude. “Photos from a clothes fitting Emma had with a stylist a couple of years ago have been stolen. They are not nude photographs. Lawyers have been instructed and we are not commenting further,” her publicist said in a statement to Variety and the BBC. Social media and blog posts have claimed that naked images of Watson have been posted this week on an anonymous document-sharing network. It was not clear what action her lawyers are planning, or against whom. Watson, 26, who made her name as a child star playing Hermione Granger in the “Harry Potter” movies, found herself at the center of a social media controversy earlier this month over a photo shoot she did for Vanity Fair magazine that included a picture in which parts of her breasts were exposed. Critics called Watson, who is also a United Nations goodwill ambassador on women’s rights and equality, hypocritical and said she was betraying her feminist ideals. Watson hit back, saying feminism was about choice. “It’s about freedom, it’s about liberation, it’s about equality. I really don’t know what my tits have to do with it,” she told Reuters. Watson appears in the live action version of the Disney classic “Beauty and the Beast,” which opens in movie theaters around the world this week and is expected to take some $200 million at the box-office, according to box office analysts. Scuba diver at Raja Ampat before the incident

JAKARTA — Indonesia’s government said Wednesday that a British-owned cruise ship must pay compensation for the destruction of coral reefs in a popular tourist area known for its extensive marine biodiversity.

The 4,200-ton cruise ship M.V. Caledonian Sky ran aground in the waters of Raja Ampat in West Papua province last week, causing extensive damage to the coral reefs. Vice President Jusuf Kalla said the ship must pay for the damage it caused. Brahmantya Satyamurti Poe r w a d i , a s e n i o r o ff i c i a l a t the Ministry of Maritime and Fisheries, said the government will soon file lawsuits against the ship and its captain, Keith Michael Taylor. He added that the ship, which is now in the Philippines, could be summoned for an investigation. Poerwadi said the ship violated both the 2004 Law on Fisheries and the 2009 Law on Environment Protection. Each law carries jail terms of up to three years for negligence that leads to destruction. The ministry described the damage to the reefs as irreparable. A preliminary investigation found

that about 1,600 square meters (17,200 square feet) of coral in the heart of the islands was destroyed. Poerwadi said a team was investigating the full extent of the destruction. Raja Ampat is an archipelago with more than 1,500 small islands, cays, and shoals and is known as a center of marine biodiversity. For local people, who rely on dive tourism, it is a sad and worrying time. “I was born here, I was in tears when I saw this damage,” said Ruben Sauyai. “The damage is huge and acute. It could take 10 to 100 years to repair it.” A professional diving instructor, Mr Sauyai, 30, runs a home stay and dive centre on Raja Ampat, a remote and idyllic island chain in the west of Indonesia’s Papua province. “Some people work as fishermen or farmers, but mostly we work in the tourism sector,” said Mr Sauyai, who started up his dive centre six

years ago. Tens of thousands of people have been to visit the underwater beauty of the area in recent years. But on 4 March, the 4,290-tonne Caledonian Sky, owned by British company Noble Caledonia, was completing a bird-watching tourism trip on Waigeo Island when it veered slightly off course. It ran aground during low tide, smashing through the coral reefs. An early official evaluation last week said the incident had damaged approximately 1,600 sq m of coral in one of the world’s most beautiful reefs.
