Tourism serves as backbone of Bali’s economy Antara

DENPASAR - The tourism industry is the driving force of Bali‘s economy which is able to provide job opportunities for locals as well as for those from other regions in Indonesia, a statistics official said. “This condition causes Bali to become the target of job seekers from various regions in In-

donesia where they speculate their fate on the island,” said Head of the Central Bureau of

Statistics (BPS) of Bali, Gede Suarsa in Denpasar, on Sunday. He said this was reflected in the increasing population of Bali which was quite significant. The results of the 2010 population census showed a population growth rate of 2.14 percent in Bali in the last ten years. In the 2000 census the population of Bali was only 3.15 million

people. It rose to 3.89 million in the year 2010. Population growth is high due to the migration of residents from some parts of Indonesia. “They are job seekers who tried their fortune in Bali, because they see many opportunities from the tourism sector,” said Gede Suarsa. Continued on page 6

M-60 planes’ airworthiness being checked Antara

DENPASAR - The Directorate of Aircraft AirWorthiness and Operations has been re-checking the airworthiness of three MA-60 planes at Bali Ngurah Rai airport in the past three days following the recent crash of one of the planes in Papua. “We have been doing the rechecking since Thursday, examining 12 technical items such as air communication instruments, engine, flight documents and components that are routinely replaced,” Teguh Jalu, the checking coordinator of the directorate, said here on Saturday.

He said the directorate also planned to test the capability of the pilots of Merpati Airlines MA 60. “Perhaps in the next few days a team will test the pilots. Team members will join the flight to test a pilot`s capability,” he said. Based on the results of the recheck on the planes made in China no damage or technical problems had been found on the three planes. “No damage or technical problems were found, that could endanger passengers,” Teguh said. Due to the rechecking a Merpati flight using MA 60 bound for Mataram-Labuan Bajo had been delayed for two hours.
