Mangupura (Bali Post)—
Congestion happening lately could threaten Bali as a world tourist destination. The traffic crowdedness to tourist access was getting more serious, and even apparently there have been no serious efforts to resolve it. This condition will have a significant impact on the tourism image of Bali. Complaints about the traffic congestion in Bali, especially in Kuta and the surrounding areas, by foreign tourists and expatriates working in Bali continued to happen. This condition is feared to have an impact on Bali which will begin to be abandoned by tourists because they feel no longer comfortable. Radu Frentiu, a foreigner from the United States who had lived in Bali four years and worked as General Manager at a hotel in Legian Kuta, admitted that he often received complaints from guests staying in the hotel where he worked. “Customers often complained because they arrived and departed late due to traffic jams and crowdedness,” he said. Other than from guests staying in
his hotel, similar complaint was also received from the Radu’s family who was coming from America to visit Bali. “Both hotel guests and my family coming to visit me from America also complained about the severe congestion in Bali, from the airport, bypass road around the Dewa Ruci statue up to Kuta road section. In addition to congestion matter, they also complained about the high level pollution due to vehicle exhaust,” he complained. He suggested that to overcome the problem of traffic congestion, there should be a better public transport with the hope of reducing the number of vehicles on the highway. Continued on page 6
Suu Kyi’s Myanmar opposition wins legal status Agence France-Presse
Myanmar authorities have given the green light to Aung San Suu Kyi’s opposition to rejoin mainstream politics, setting the scene for the Nobel laureate to run for a seat in the new parliament. Tuesday’s announcement in state media follows a series of reformist moves by a new military-backed government dominated by former generals, who are now reaching out to political opponents and the West. Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) was stripped of its status as a legal political party by the junta last year after it chose to boycott a rare election, saying the rules were unfair. A brief announcement in the official New Light of Myanmar newspaper said that the country’s election commission had approved the NLD’s application to re-register as a political party.
