LOS ANGELES - Patty Jenkins will return to direct the 2019 sequel to this year’s hit superhero movie “Wonder Woman,” film trade publications said on Monday, after she became the highest-grossing female director in Hollywood history. Jenkins, 46, will once again direct Israeli actress Gal Gadot as the superhero in “Wonder Woman 2,” scheduled for release on Dec. 13, 2019, publications including Variety and Hollywood Reporter said. Both publications, citing unnamed sources, said Jenkins will be paid around $8 million to direct the sequel and would also receive a back end of the film’s box office gross, which would make her the highest-paid female director in Hollywood history. Movie studio Warner Bros did not comment on the news and has not given any further details on the sequel. “Wonder Woman,” was the first standalone movie to star a female superhero Patty Jenkins
since 2005’s box office dud “Elektra,” and the first to be directed by a woman. It rode to the top of the box office in June on a wave of good reviews and female empowerment, and with $816.4 million at the worldwide box office, it is now the second-biggest movie of the year after the live-action version of “Beauty and the Beast.” Jenkins overtook Phyllida Lloyd, who directed 2008’s musical “Mamma Mia!,” for the title of highest-grossing female director. Gadot’s Wonder Woman will next be seen in November’s superhero ensemble movie “Justice League,” alongside Ben Affleck’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman. “Wonder Woman,” the fourth film in Warner Bros’ current iteration of DC Comics’ cinematic franchise, helped boost profits for Warner Bros’ parent company Time Warner Inc. Disney delays ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ after J.J. Abrams takes over LOS ANGELES - Walt Disney Co delayed the release of the ninth installment of the “Star Wars” saga to Dec. 20, 2019 after announcing on Tuesday the return of filmmaker J.J. Abrams to the franchise to write and direct the movie. Disney pushed back “Star Wars: Episode IX” from its initial May 2019 release date after Abrams replaced filmmaker Colin Trevorrow, who parted ways with Disney last week citing differing creative visions with the studio. Abrams launched Disney’s reboot of the “Star Wars” franchise with 2015’s box office hit “The Force Awakens,” which reunited original 1977 stars Harrison Ford,
Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill and introduced a new generation of characters. The film made more than $2 billion at the global box office. “With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy,” Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement. “Episode IX” faced creative challenges after the sudden death of Fisher, who plays the franchise’s Princess Leia, last year. Her character, now called General Leia Organa, has a central role in the upcoming December film “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” the eighth installment in the
saga written and directed by Rian Johnson. “Episode IX” was the second “Star Wars” project to lose a director this year. Disney said in June that filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller had left the upcoming Han Solo “Star Wars” spin-off movie due to creative differences. They were replaced by Hollywood veteran Ron Howard, the Oscar-winning director of “A Beautiful Mind.” “Star Wars: Episode IX” is part of Disney’s expanding slate of “Star Wars” films that continue George Lucas’ Skywalker saga as well as introducing standalone spin-off films set within the galaxy far, far away. Singapore names first woman president, raising eyebrows over election process
SINGAPORE - Singapore named a former speaker of parliament as the multicultural city-state’s first woman president on Wednesday while critics expressed dismay that other candidates were disqualified and the election went uncontested. Aiming to strengthen a sense of inclusivity, Singapore had decreed the presidency, a largely ceremonial six-year post, would be reserved for candidates from the minority Malay community this time.

The returning officer declared Halimah Yacob, 63, elected on Wednesday after nominations closed. Of the four other applicants, two were not Malays and two were not qualified to contest, the elections department said on Monday. Halimah had automatically qualified because she held a senior public post for over three years. If the election had been held, all citizens would have been eligible to vote. Several critics went online to protest against the stringent eligibility rules, which include a stipulation that a candidate from the private sector should have headed a company with paid-up capital of at least S$500 million ($370 million). The prime minister’s office said it had no comment on criticism of the election process. “It would have restored some of the lost moral
authority by her winning against credible opponents through popular votes,” said opposition politician Yee Jenn Jong in a blog post. “She is, after all, a veteran in elections and has won handsomely in the four general elections she stood in.” The rights group Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE) said it hoped “more will be done to improve access to politics for all of Singapore’s women”.
