Adele sweeps Grammy awards in upset victory over Beyonce

LOS ANGELES Adele swept the Grammy Awards on Sunday, taking home statuettes for the top prizes album, record and song of the year - in a shock, history-making victory over Beyonce on a night marked by political statements and emotional tributes.

Adele, 28, won all five Grammys for which she was nominated, including for her comeback album “25” and her soaring ballad “Hello.” She became the first person in Grammy history to win the top three awards

twice, following her wins for her last album “21” in 2012. Beyonce, 35, had gone into Sunday’s awards show with a leading nine nominations for her powerful “Lemonade” album about race, feminism, and betrayal. She had been hoping to win her first album of the year Grammy. Adele, who now has a career total of 15 Grammys, seemed stunned, telling reporters backstage that she “felt like it was her (Beyonce’s) time to win.” “My queen and my idol is Queen B. I adore you,” the British singer said to Beyonce, seated in the front row, as she accepted her award. “I can’t possibly accept this award, and I’m very humble and very grateful. But my artist of my life is Beyonce. This album for me, the ‘Lemonade’ album, was so monumental,” she added. (rtr)

BANGLI - Tens of hectares of farmland located at Tabu hamlet, Songan, Kintamani, are badly damaged. The farmland planted with various types of commodities are destroyed due to flash floods occurred since Friday (Feb.10). Aside from Songan, ten hectares of farmland at other villages at Yeh Mampeh and Culali were also devastated by flash floods. Seeing the acreage of severely damaged farmland, the losses are estimated to reach billions of rupiahs. A farmer of Tabu hamlet, Songan, Putu Marna, said on Sunday (Feb. 12) that a total of 15 hectares of farmland disappeared as a result of flash floods mixed with mud. After flushed by heavy rain, he said that the plants like shallot, cabbage and others were devastated by flash floods to become severely damaged. “The farmlands were hit by flash floods and mud at night three days ago. Right now, the mud starts to dry up,” he said. Marna ensured that his crops

such as onions, cabbage and others in such damaged condition can no longer be saved. “Everything faces crop failure. With such incident, the losses are estimated to reach hundreds of millions of rupiahs,” he said while adding that re-farming can only be done about two months ahead. Similar opinion was also expressed by another farmer from Yeh Mampeh village, Nengah Landep. He said that a total of some 60 hectares of land are severely damaged

that will end in crop failure due to washed away by flash floods. The damaged agricultural crops include tomato, crops, marigold, cabbage, shallot, chili and mango. “Everything has been cleared by floods. Ranging from the newly planted crops to those having been ready to be harvested was swept away by water. Due to this natural disaster, we resign and cannot do anything. If calculated, the losses may reach hundreds of millions of rupiahs. Then, the total losses across the village due to flash floods are estimated to reach billions of rupiahs,” he said. Similarly, Wayan Sleman admitted that his farmland area of 15 hectares was also swept away by flash floods. Moreover, the tangerine being ready to be harvested has been flat on the ground as buried

by one-meter high mud. “Aside from tangerine, other plants were also entirely buried in the sand and mud,” he said. After the disaster, he can no longer grow crops because the farmland owned has been swept away by flash floods bringing mud, sand, trees and other materials. “For the time being, we cannot do farming because all the plants were washed away by the floods. Probably, we can only re-farm in next two months,” he said. In the meantime, a resident of Bukit Mentik, South Batur, Wayan Mustika, said that his farmland of about 45 hectares are severely destroyed by flash floods as well. It happened three days ago. As a result, the farmland and house compound of eight families have been flooded and left nothing. So, his

family and other relatives should evacuate to safer location. “The entire farmlands have been buried by mud brought by flash flood. With other residents, I do no longer live here. I just come here for while to collect usable goods. Later this afternoon, I return to Masem Batur hamlet. Meanwhile, other residents also evacuate to their relative’s home whose condition is far safer,” he concluded.
