Lotus will bring the best out of Kimi Raikkonen

Lotus will bring the very best out of Kimi Raikkonen, reckon team bosses Eric Boullier and Gerard Lopez, who believe the 2007 world champion is a much more dedicated team player than his past reputation suggested. Raikkonen has impressed Lotus since joining the team for his Formula 1 comeback after two years in rallying, and was quickest on the first day of winter testing at Jerez last week. Lopez said Lotus had found Raikkonen to be a totally different character to how he was presented during his last F1 stint. “For most people it’s probably one of the big mysteries, because you hear the hearsay and so forth,

but we feel very good with him and he clearly feels at home,” Lopez told AUTOSPORT. “He smiles a lot when he’s with us! But most importantly that says he feels more like part of the family.” Lopez added: “I think Kimi has a public image that honestly from what we’ve seen does not translate into how he really is. He’s a very hard worker, very good at providing feedback, and has a good team spirit. “Once we talked to him, once we understood why he was coming back, we really felt comfortable. If you look at what happened [at the test], nobody can say that he’s not on the pace.” Boullier reckons the way Lotus works is proving ideal for Raikkonen.

“We tried to handle his personality and make sure that we don’t bother him too much with too many intrusions, and he’s a real racer,” said Boullier. “This team is full of proper racing people and he has fitted very well because we speak the same language. “We are flexible, but our system is very racing-orientated, and that suits him very well.”

Cable excavation reaps complaints Bali Post

MANGUPURA - Again, the chaotic cable excavation in the Kuta tourist resort reaped a complaint. At some points, such as on Jalan Patih Jelantik, Jalan Sriwijaya, Jalan Nakula, Jalan Legian and Jalan Melasti, the poorly managed and repaired cable excavation is assessed to have become a source of damage to the road. Thus, the Badung Government is urged to issue a reprimand to the project owner.

Jari-Matti Latvala escaped a late puncture to wrap up victory in Rally Sweden. The Ford driver’s 35-second lead dwindled to just eight seconds when he hit a rock and damaged a front tyre on the antepenultimate stage. But quickest time on the next test rebuilt his advantage and allowed to come home comfortable ahead of main rival Mikko Hirvonen. Solberg and Ostberg ended up in a long tussle over the final podium spot, which was won by the Adapta Ford when the works man lost time with a puncture from the same rock his team-mate Latvala had hit. Myriad incidents for Loeb meant he could only finish sixth, with MSport Ford’s Evgeny Novikov repeating his impressive Monte Carlo form by driving fast enough to stay out of the recovering factory Citroen’s reach and secure fifth place. Henning Solberg was seventh in

The Finnish duo had taken charge of the rally from Friday afternoon onwards, after set-up concerns for Mads Ostberg, a spin by Petter Solberg and a two-minute excursion into a snow bank by Sebastien Loeb saw the trio fall away from the lead battle. Latvala gradually edged away from Hirvonen as the weekend progressed, with a few errant set-up changes and high tyre wear on the Citroen ultimately costing Hirvonen too much time.

A Pulukan resident discovers antique jars Negara (Bali Post)—

A resident of Pangkung Medahan hamlet, Pulukan village, Pekutatan subdistrict, discovered a jar on the area of former landslide in his garden. Allegedly, it was an antique jar buried in the land for years. Discoverer of the jar, Supingan, 50, when met on Sunday (Feb 12) admitted to discover it accidentally on the river bank of Pangkung Medahan, Pangkung Medahan hamlet. Supingan said that on Thursday afternoon (Feb 9) at about 6:00 p.m. local time, he was bathing in the river nearby. While his son, Waskito Hadi, 40, was installing fishing line near the location. Suddenly, he saw something attractive like a stone on the landslide area of the cliff. After being approached, it was in fact a jar emerging from the cliff. Driven out by his curiosity, Waskito with his father then dug it. Well, they discovered some other jars; some were of larger size but having cracked. The jars contained some fragile ceramic items such as plates and bowls along with a small jar. Afterward, they brought the findings to their home. On the following day, they came again to the same location and dug up the cliff. Again, they discovered another jar. Up to last Sunday, they still kept those objects suspected

The jars which were found by Supingan in river bank of Pangkung Medahan, Pangkung Medahan hamlet, Jembrana as a heritage. He hoped there would be a team that conducted a study to ensure about the details of such discoveries. His party estimated the riverside location was formerly a

residential area. Based on the stories, when their predecessors first opened the land area in 1902 they also found a banyan tree and some jars buried around the location. (kmb26)

After Kuningan Only few visitors come to see Goa Lawah Beach Semarapura (Bali Post)—

In fact, the visit of Balinese people, chiefly that of Klungkung, to Goa Lawah Beach located at Pesinggahan, Dawan, Klungkung, to enjoy religious holiday was not as much as ever before. Coinciding with the day after Kuningan, Sunday afternoon (Feb 12), for example, only a few people seemed to pay a visit to the tourist area situated across the Goa Lawah Temple. “Yes, it is indeed very lonely today (Sunday—Ed),” said a local trader, Wayan Merta. Merta said the condition on last Sunday was very much different from the previous holidays. “Every religious holidays, many people came here (Goa Lawah Beach— Ed) and this destination was always crowded from the morning till night,” he said while adding that only few visitors dropped in since the morning until 1:30 p.m. local time. Lacking of visitors coming to one of the leading tourist objects in Klungkung, other than Watu Klotok dan Kusamba Beach, absolutely affected the revenue of traders. If in the previous religious holiday, Merta selling meatballs, snacks and drinks, claimed to prepare more than 6 kg of meatball. Now, he only maximally prepared up to 5 kg. “Though I lack of visitors during this holiday, my sales increases

compared to normal days. On normal days, I maximally can sell 1 kg of meatball,” he added. Based on observation on Goa Lawah Beach, there were approximately 21 Balinese people averagely selling meatballs, drinks and various snacks. Meanwhile, the drink on sale comprised the mixed ice, coconut ice and others. Even, some stalls seemed to have jutted to shoreline. As a result, it hindered the notice board of swimming ban. Several traders took the location of selling up to the shoreline, not without a reason. Hopefully, their goods would be selling well rather than at the parking lot. “Yes, we deliberately choose the venue to eat on the beach. We can eat our favorite food here, while enjoying the waves,” said a meatball buyer, Made Arsa from Denpasar who travelled with three other companions. He said that Goa Lawah was interesting enough for a holiday destination. Moreover, just for enjoying the beauty of the beach visitors would be charged nothing, except for the parking ticket. Therefore, they would only spend money for food and drinks. Unlike at the Goa Lawah Temple attraction, visitors should pay an entrance ticket. (kmb20)

Sustainable economic crisis

Bali plantation estimated to slump 50 percent in 2012 Denpasar (Bali Post)—

The value of export commodities from Bali in 2012 is predicted to decline by some 50 percent. It happens due to the impact of economic crisis in Europe and the United States estimated to still take time for recovery. Many analysts predict the crisis is still continuing in 2012. “Possibly, the decline in the export of plantation commodity reaches 50 percent because there is no harvest. Even, the demand weakens, too. Unrecovered economic condition in a number of destination countries also has an impact on the development of Bali’s

export commodities in 2012,” said a perpetrator of plantation export from Bali, IB Raka Wiryanatha, when contacted on Sunday (Feb 12). He said the financial crisis in a country was very influential in trading activity. The absence of signs of recovery in the financial crisis in Europe could be making the development of Bali’s export commodities bleak this year. Additionally, the production condition of the domestic plantation commodities could not be expected too much lately. “Due to financial crisis, importers of the country will reduce their purchase on the

plantation products. They will tend to focus on purchasing the products considered very important for their country,” he said. Bali’s plantation commodities exported to Europe, said IB Raka, were quite a lot, mainly the processed coffee and cacao. According to him, the financial crisis influencing the Europe had an impact on the domestic condition. “During 2011, the cacao becoming one of the local commodities decreased in production. Similar condition also happened to cloves. Due to decline in production, the price of cloves soared to the range of IDR 180.000IDR 200,000 per kg. (kmb28)

Kobe-mania reigns in Lakers win over Toronto Reuters

TORONTO - ‘Linsanity’ may be the NBA’s newest smash hit but the Kobe Bryant Show remains one of professional basketball’s longest running acts. The All-Star guard proving again he is basketball’s ultimate showman as he lifted the Los Angeles Lakers to a 94-92 win over the Toronto Raptors on Sunday with some late game heroics. With charismatic newcomer Jeremy Lin and the New York Knicks set to follow the Lakers into Toronto on Tuesday, the buzz around Sunday’s matinee was very much focused on the phenomenon that has become known as ‘Linsanity’. But after Bryant came to the rescue with a jaw-dropping winner with less than four seconds to play, everyone was caught up in the grips of Kobemania. “That’s who he (Bryant) is,” praised Lakers coach Mike Brown. “We are in a one-point game, a twopoint game, the ball is going to be in his hands. “We expect him to make the play and he did that tonight. “When you have a guy like Kobe Bryant you are always going to give yourself a chance.” Recognised as one of the NBA’s hardest working athletes and relentless perfectionist, Bryant is

also described as one of the game’s most ruthless competitors, willing do whatever it takes to win. “Don’t matter if you’re in the backyard playing or on the main stage, he’s going to try to take your neck off,” Raptors DeMar DeRozan told reporters as he prepared to face Bryant “It don’t matter where, it could be a snowy day against Eskimos. He’s going to try to kill them all.” Just a handful of games into his NBA career, Lin barely qualifies as a one-hit wonder while Bryant has been the league’s longest running hit. For 16 seasons, Bryant has been the headliner, leading the Lakers to five championships and claiming a trophy case full of individual honours, including league and finals MVP awards. Lin has become the NBA’s Tim Tebow, the unwanted underdog who has emerged to capture the imagina-

tion of basketball fans around the world. Bryant is an NBA institution, who leads the league in scoring this season and the 33-year-old shows no signs of slowing down saying he was ready to take on the heavy workload of another playoff of run followed by a bid for a gold medal at the London Olympics. “It’s a big Olympics for us, an opportunity for us to cement ourselves again as being a powerhouse,” said Bryant. “We won the last Olympics, we won the worlds and now we want to win the Olympics in London and that will put us back where we belong. “I don’t have to do much. I’m the closer, they bring me in the last two minutes. “I don’t have to do anything, LeBron (James), (Dwyane) Wade they can do all the heavy-lifting.”

PARIS - Germany’s Angelique Kerber stunned home favourite Marion Bartoli 7-6 5-7 6-3 to win the Paris Open on Sunday and seal the first WTA Tour title of her career. Second seed Bartoli, the world number seven, was looking for her first trophy on home soil and Maria

Sharapova’s quarter-final defeat by Kerber seemed to have opened the door for the Frenchwoman. However, left-hander Kerber raised her game again with a confident display in the hardcourt final silencing the crowd at the Stade Coubertin. “It’s unbelievable. It’s my first title, I don’t know what to say. It was a difficult match, I battled

for every point. It’s been a fantastic week,” Kerber told reporters. The ninth seed and world number 27’s win came in the 20th edition of the Paris Open. Bartoli was gracious in defeat. “The effort produced was enormous on both sides. It is going to be hard to recover, physically and mentally,” she said. PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Phil Mickelson rallied from six shots behind to win for the fourth time at Pebble Beach, a final round made even more memorable by the guy in a red shirt who was among the first to congratulate him Sunday on the 18th green. Turns out that Tiger Woods was just along for the ride. Mickelson closed with an 8-under 64, beating Woods by 11 shots in a one-sided showdown at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. “I just feel very inspired when I play with him,” said Mickelson, who has posted the better score the past five times he has played alongside Woods in the final round. “I love playing with him, and he brings out some of my best golf. I hope that he continues to play better, and better, and I hope that he and I have a chance to play together more in the final rounds.” Woods, one shot out of the lead on the sixth hole after 54hole leader Charlie Wi fell apart early, followed his first birdie of the final round with three straight bogeys, starting with a three-putt from 18 feet on the par-3 seventh. It never got much better from there. He finished a miserable day with another three-putt on the 18th for a 75, the only consolation coming from belief that he’s closer than ever to putting it all together. “I didn’t hit it as bad as the score indicated, but I putted awful,” Woods said. “As good as I felt on the greens yesterday, I felt bad today. Anything I tried to do wasn’t working. Consequently, I made a ton of mistakes on the green.”

Ronaldo treble sends Real 10 points clear Reuters

Zambia’s players and team staff celebrate with the African Cup of Nations trophy after beating Ivory Coast in their final soccer match at Stade de l’Amitie in Libreville, Gabon Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012.

Drogba ghosts return as Zambia win shootout

MADRID - Real Madrid opened a 10-point lead over Barcelona at the top of La Liga after Cristiano Ronaldo’s sixth hat-trick of the season clinched a 4-2 comeback win at home to 10-man Levante on Sunday. A fifth-minute Gustavo Cabral header gave Levante, the only team apart from Barca to beat Real this season, a surprise lead at the Bernabeu before midfielder Vicente Iborra handled the ball in the area after 43 minutes and was shown a second yellow card. Ronaldo smashed the penalty into the corner of the net for the equaliser, his 21st successful spot kick in a row. The Portuguese forward put the home side ahead when he nodded in a Gonzalo Higuain cross five minutes into the second half. Ronaldo then completed the hat-trick, his 13th since joining Real for a world-record fee in 2009, with a dipping drive seven minutes later. It was the 27th goal of the campaign for the league’s top scorer. Levante pulled a goal back in the 63rd minute when Arouna Kone, who netted in a 1-0 home win over Real in September, finished off a fine breakaway by heading past Iker Casillas before Karim Benzema secured victory three minutes later. It was Real’s seventh straight league victory since they were beaten 3-1 by Barca in December. Their 17th win in 18 games also gave Jose Mourinho’s side 58 points from 22 matches. Barca, who crashed to a shock 3-2 defeat at Osasuna on Saturday, have 48 points. The champions are eight ahead of third-placed Valencia who thumped struggling Sporting Gijon 4-0 on Sunday. Levante are fourth on 32 points, level on points with fifth-placed Espanyol who lost 2-0 at home to bottom club Real Zaragoza. TEAM SUCCESS

Ronaldo said he was very happy to hear the Real fans chanting his name on Sunday after they whistled him earlier in the season following some below-par performances. “We started the game badly but once we got the first goal we started to play well,” he told Spanish television. “My goals come because of the success of the team. I am scoring goals and playing well and I want to continue the same way. “There is still a lot left in the season but we are playing well and we have to keep going to the end.” Ronaldo’s treble, which put him four clear of Barca forward and World Player of the Year Lionel Messi in the league scoring chart, means he has now netted more goals for Real than for his previous club Manchester United. The 27-year-old has 119 in 122 games for the Spanish side compared with 118 in 292 matches for United.

LIBREVILLE - Didier Drogba’s ghosts returned to haunt him as Zambia won the African Nations Cup for the first time after beating Ivory Coast 8-7 in a drama-filled penalty shootout following a 0-0 draw on Sunday. Stoppila Sunzu converted the winning penalty after three successive efforts had been missed in a long and nervy shootout that totalled 18 kicks. But the goalless match might not have had to go to the shootout had Drogba not ballooned a 70th-minute penalty well wide to deny his team victory inside 90 minutes, repeating his miss in the 2006 final which the Ivorians lost to Egypt. The loss was another near miss for the Ivorian’s golden generation, who had been expected to win African football’s top prize at the last four editions but failed every time. Two of their English Premier League players - Kolo Toure and Gervinho - missed kicks in the shootout. “We did not play well but we also had our chances. It is a huge disappointment, we had expected a different outcome,” Ivorian coach Francois Zahoui said. Zambia, who had gone into the game as underdogs, won over the 40,000 crowd in the Friendship Stadium in the Gabon capital with their positive play against a surprisingly

timid Ivorian side who failed to take the initiative in the game. “We told ourselves we would not be scared of them. We knew we had the team to win this and we wanted to make sure we did,” goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene said. After winning, the Zambian team held up banners remembering their side that died in a air crash not far from the stadium in 1993 and whose memory they had honoured on the eve of the game. “I can’t explain why we won, it was like there was special force with us,” added a teary coach Herve Renard. At times, Zambia showed complete disdain for their star-studded opponents, with showy tricks on the ball and some clever routines although they also lived dangerously in defence. Yaya Toure and substitute Max Gradel both went narrowly wide for the Ivorians but it was Drogba who

could have been the hero after Isaac Chansa had pushed down Gervinho in the penalty area in the 70th minute and the Senegal referee Badara Diatta bravely awarded a penalty. But Drogba hit his shot well over and then seemed to sink into a sulk for the rest of the game. He was brave enough, however, to take the fifth penalty for the Ivorians in the shootout. The first 14 kicks were successfully converted before a reluctant Kolo Toure had his shot saved at 7-7 but Rainford Kalaba then missed for Zambia. Gervinho, who also did not want to take a kick, then missed before Sunzu won the cup for Zambia, who had suffered two previous defeats in the 1974 and 1994 finals. It was the seventh Nations Cup final to be decided on penalties. The most recent was when Egypt beat the Ivorians 5-3 in the 2006 final, which also ended goalless.

IDR 15.6 billion to repair school buildings Denpasar (Bali Post)—

In fiscal year 2012, the Denpasar Municipality through the Education Agency allocated some IDR 15.6 billion more to rehabilitate the damaged school buildings (primary and junior high). Among the school buildings to be renovated, the building of SDN 17 Dangin Puri primary school located adjacent to the office of the Denpasar House on Jalan Melati will be given priority. “Proposals of the damaged school building repair have been received and will be addressed in this budget year 2012. Chairman of Commission D of the Denpasar House, Wayan Sugiarta, revealed it on Sunday (Feb 12). When asked about the issue on the damaged school building at SDN 4 Tonja inspected by the Denpasar Council on Education some time ago, Sugiarta claimed not to know for sure about the damage of SDN 4 Tonja. Additionally, his agency had not received any information whether the damage had been proposed to be repaired in the fiscal year 2012 or not. “Sorry, I do not know exactly about the damage of SDN 4 Tonja. We in the Commission D are going to inspect the school,” he said. Based on information compiled from the Division Head of Basic Education, Denpasar Education Agency, I Made Raka, the budget had been prepared to rehab the school buildings, included the SDN 4 Tonja considering the budget prepared for the renovation was for light and moderate category of damages. “If the damage of SDN 4 Tonja is mild or moderate, I suggest the Denpasar Education Agency also renovate it though the school has not proposed it. However, if the damage is pretty heavy, probably it should wait for the next budget, at least the amended budget,” he said. As reported previously, the Denpasar Council on Education had directly inspected the building condition of SDN 4 Tonja located at Jalan Antasura 4X North Denpasar, Wednesday (Feb 8). From the results of site inspec-

cardboard as a pad. Some drivers also slept on the grass in the medium of the road. Uniquely, some drivers climbed trees in the road median and then slept on it. “Indeed, we have often experienced such an incident (congestion). However, this seems the most severe. Similarly, the time is uncertain,” said Slamet, a driver from Pasuruan. Slamet and a number of companions claimed to have difficulty to find food stalls. If they wanted to eat, they should hire a motorcycle taxi to food stall at Pesinggahan. The taxi fare was also quite expensive, namely IDR 20,000, and so was the price of food. “To save cost, we collect money and ask someone to buy food and other

necessities. As a result, the taxi cost incurred for one person,” said Slamet admitting to drive truck to transport mattress to Lombok. Therefore, he felt fortunate because he conveyed non-perishable goods. In contrast to Muhrin, he worried that his goods would be easily perishable if having to queue for long because he carried groceries. Additionally, a number of trucks looked to carry new motorcycles, electric poles, and other heavy equipment. The drivers admitted not to get definite information about the cause of such long lines. “Perhaps, there is a ceremony, or the ship indeed does not operate. We really do not know,” said Muhrin. After Kuningan, residents throng the beach Singaraja (Bali Post)—

On the day after Kuningan, Sunday (Feb 12), local residents of Buleleng thronged a number of beaches in North Bali. They were coming together and most of them brought along their lunch supplies, so the merchandise of traders on the beach was not in demand. Based on observation at some locations, from the morning local people had thronged the Lovina Beach at Kalibukbuk and Penimbangan Beach at Baktiseraga, Singaraja. The entourage of visitors came up with motorcycles and private cars. On both beaches, people took tourism activities such as swimming, canoeing or swimming by used inner tube. Meanwhile, the fishing hobbyists could deliver their indulgence while testing patience by fishing in deep sea. According to Mr. Kadek, an owner of canoe and used inner tube rental business on the Penimbangan Beach, the object was quite attractive and much visited by local people. Even though the marine environment was not as beautiful as Kuta Beach, the people and those from outside the region apparently took their time to come to Penimbangan. “On holidays like Kuningan, more people pay a visit than on normal days,” he said. Mr. Kadek added though the visit was crowded but only some of them did shopping. This happened because most visitors had brought along their own lunch, so they only needed to buy soft drink or snack on the beach. Additionally, those visitors also rented a canoe or used inner tube for swimming on the beach. A complete set of canoe with life jacket was rented at IDR 10,000, while the used inner tube at IDR 5,000 each. “Our income is obtained from the rental of canoe and inner tube. Here, the food is not in demand because visitors have usually brought along their own lunch from home,” he said. Similar condition also ensued on Lovina Beach. Visitors had thronged the object from the morning until evening. People coming from various villages in Buleleng were just sitting on the beach. Occasionally, they bought snacks or drinks sold by traders on the beach. Meanwhile, the souvenir traders in the area said they did not get a penny of income. Luckily, the condition could be covered by the purchase made by foreign tourists. “On religious holiday like today, local visitors are just sitting, none did shopping. Fortunately, there were some foreign tourists and bought souvenirs here,” said a souvenir trader on Lovina Beach, Kadek Sariasih. (kmb)

Hundreds of trucks, mostly large trucks, looked to queue on Jalan Bypass IB Mantra at Tiyingadi, Kusamba, Dawan, Sunday (Feb 12). Such a queue had happened since two days before. The drivers did not know how long they would be trapped in such congestion. Obviously, the long lines made them lose money, material and energy. The truck drivers averagely from Surabaya, Pasuruan and Jakarta claimed to have difficulty to get food at location of the queue as well as to sleep. Based on last observation, most drivers seemed to have a nap under their truck body (on asphalt) using

Venezuela’s Capriles wins primary, seeks to beat Chavez

CARACAS - Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles easily won a primary election on Sunday to become the unity candidate against President Hugo Chavez, vowing to end 13 years of socialist rule that he said has left the OPEC nation in crisis. Capriles’ candidacy had a firm start as unexpectedly high participation of nearly 3 million people in the primary vote signaled the opposition can mobilize supporters ahead of the October 7 presidential election. The 39-year-old, center-left state governor’s bid was further bolstered by a show of unity among other candidates from the opposition, which for years suffered from internal disputes that ultimately benefited Chavez. Yet with Chavez riding high in polls, still popular among the poor and spending massively on welfare projects, Capriles will need to go beyond the vague promises and feel-good factor of his primary campaign if he is to unseat the president. “This is about the unity of all Venezuelans that want progress,” Capriles told thousands of cheering supporters gathered outside his campaign headquarters on Sunday night. “We have a country in crisis and a government dedicated only to partisan politics.” His strong showing, winning 62 percent of the primary vote, will likely lift Venezuelan bonds, which react well to any news suggesting a change from Chavez’s state-centered economic model. “This result is still market positive as the opposition showed mobilization capacity and empowered the candidate,” wrote Goldman Sachs analyst Alberto Ramos. Venezuelan bonds, among the most highly traded emerging market securities, rose following Chavez’s cancer diagnosis last year but slipped again as the former soldier staged what appeared to be quick recovery.

Firefighters doused the smoldering remains of several buildings, set ablaze by hooded youths during protests against the package of pay, pension and job cuts adopted by parliament on Sunday after 10 hours of debate. The bill was the price of a 130 billion euro ($172 billion) EU/IMF bailout to save Greece from a chaotic default next month. The government of Prime Minister Lucas Papademos must come up with a further 325 million euros in budget savings to satisfy euro zone finance ministers, scheduled to meet on Wednesday, and political leaders must commit to implementing the measures even after an election penciled in for April. Papademos’ government saw 43 deputies rebel in what may be an indication of the difficulties in ensuring politicians stick to the program, which include a 22 percent cut in the minimum wage -- a package critics say condemns the economy to an ever-deeper

downward spiral. Police said 150 shops were looted in the capital and 48 buildings set ablaze. Some 100 people - including 68 police were wounded and 130 detained, a police official said on Monday. There was also violence in cities across the country, including Greece’s second-largest city Thessaloniki and the islands of Corfu and Crete, said the official, who declined to be named. Greeks were shocked at the burnt buildings that included the neo-classical home to the Attikon cinema dating from 1870. “We are all very angry with these measures but this is not the way out,” said Dimitris Hatzichristos, 30, a public sector worker surveying the debris. Altogether 199 of the 300 lawmakers backed the controversial bill. The 43 who rebelled were immediately expelled by their parties, the socialists and conservatives. “Night of terror inside and outside the parliament,” con-

servative daily Eleftheros Typos wrote on its front page. Asian shares and the euro gained modestly on Monday and MSCI’s broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan edged up as much as 0.3 percent. Pa p a d e m o s , a t e c h n o c r a t brought in to get a grip on the crisis, denounced the worst breakdown of order since 2008, when violence gripped Greece for weeks after police shot a 15year-old schoolboy. “Vandalism, violence and destruction have no place in a democratic country and won’t be tolerated,” he told parliament on Sunday as it prepared to vote. But he said that imposing the austerity on a nation that has already endured several years of cuts would be tough. “The full, timely and effective implementation of the program won’t be easy. We are fully aware that the economic program means short-term sacrifices for the Greek people,” Papademos said.

Lab study raises questions over nano-particle impact Agence France Presse

Tests involving chickens have raised questions about the impact on health from engineered nano-particles, the ultra-fine grains commonly used in drugs and processed foods, scientists said on Sunday. Chickens exposed to high oral doses of polystyrene particles 50 nanometres (50 billionths of a metre) across absorbed less iron in their diet, according to their study. At the same time, birds that were chronically exposed to these doses had a “remodelling” of their intestinal villi, the microscopic finger-like projections that play an important role in absorbing nutrients. The changes meant that the villi increased the surface area available for taking in iron. Intestinal uptake of calcium, copper, zinc and vitamins A, D, E and K may also be affected by high exposure to nanoparticles, although further research is needed to investigate this, say the authors. The team, led by Michael Shuler of Cornell University in New York, tested the particles on chickens as a substitute for the human intestine and also used lab-dish cells from the lining of the human gut. The chickens were given roughly the same dose, weight for weight, as an adult human in a developed country. “The intestinal epithelial layer represents the initial gate that ingested nanoparticles must pass to reach the body,” says the paper, which appears in the specialist journal Nature Nanotechnology. “The polystyrene particles used in these experiments are generally considered non-toxic, but their interaction with a normal physiological process suggests a potential mechanism for a chronic, harmful, but subtle response.” Engineered nano-particles are used increasingly in the form of titanium oxide or as aluminium silicates in pills to help deliver pills and in food, where they are used as stabilisers or anti-caking agents in fluids and creams. In developed countries, individuals may be consuming each day a thousand billion engineered particles ranging from fine to ultrafine in scale, according to figures from 2002 research quoted in the study.

Hundreds of decked-out dogs — and a few brave cats — got in on the Carnival fun at Rio de Janeiro’s annual pet-friendly parade: Labradors in pink tutus or engineers’ overalls cavorted with Maltese terriers with fairy wings, and poodles in superheros’ capes sniffed sausage dogs dressed up as Salome, with sequin-covered harem pants. Carnival is perhaps the defining moment in Brazilian life, and the annual Blocao — a play on the word for street party, “bloco,” and dog, or “cao” — allows fourlegged family members a chance to take part in the fun. “The animal excitement is taking over Copacabana,” said Blocao organizer Marco Antonio Toto as the parade’s sound truck, topped by an enormous inflatable terrier, crawled its way down the seaside Atlantica Avenue. “The neighborhood of Copacabana has currently the most dog owners per square meter. It deserves this

prestigious party. Our animals deserve this celebration.” Talent agent Ariane Raballo made the trip from Rio’s sister city of Niteroi to parade with her two mini Yorkies dressed as Carmen Miranda, complete with cornucopias of tiny tropical fruits on their heads. “We come every year,” said Raballo, as Maia and Lady Kate strained at the leash to sniff the four-legged passers-by and posed coquettishly as parade-goers of the two-legged variety snapped photos with their iPhones. “They love it.” Spirits were high, and there was remarkably few fights: Gigantic Rhodesian ridgebacks romped with teacup poodles, and lumbering labs palled around with cocker spaniels. Leashes required constant detangling as new friends taking in each others’ scent tied themselves in knots. Even Kiko, a 3-year-old dachshund dressed as a hot-dog, was enjoying himself. “Normally, he’s not a very

social dog, with humans or other dogs,” said his owner, Denis Naiff, a psychology professor whose wife and daughter were sporting matching hamburger hats. “But he’s really having fun. Must be the Carnival spirit.” The heat looked to have some of the dogs down, and some owners poured water into their pets’ mouths to cool them down. Eduardo Jonathan, a 31-yearold makeup artist dressed as Batman, said he was suffering under his rubber costume, though Batman Jr. his 5-year-old Yorkie, looked to be taking the heat in stride. The dog hammed it up for the TV cameras as Jonathan and a friend disguised as the Joker sweated off their facepaint. Two men dressed as giant ticks looked even hotter. Their manylegged costumes were made out of synthetic fur, and both had removed their masks so as to avoid suffocation as they passed out fliers for an anti-parasite spray.

LOS ANGELES — Love triumphed over action at the weekend box office with a No. 1 debut for the romantic drama “The Vow.” Studio estimates Sunday show that the love story starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum took in $41.7 million to come in ahead of two new action tales and the first 3-D “Star Wars” reissue. Landing a close second with $39.3 million was Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds’ action thriller “Safe House.” Coming in solidly at No. 3 was Dwayne Johnson’s family action sequel “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” with $27.6 million. And adding to George Lucas’ riches was the 3-D premiere of “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace,” which was No. 4 with $23 million. That raises the lifetime domestic

total for “Phantom Menace to $454.1 million.

This was the first non-holiday weekend that four movies opened with more than $20 million each, said Paul Dergarabedian, analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. The only other time when four new releases did that well was over Christmas weekend in 2008, he said. “It felt like a summer weekend to me,” Dergarabedian said. “This was

like a great big valentine from Hollywood to the audience, or from the audience to Hollywood.” The four big debuts maintained Hollywood’s strong business during the normally sleepy winter. Overall domestic revenues totaled $193 million, up 19.3 percent from the same weekend last year, when “Just Go with It” led with $30.5 million. So far this year, domestic receipts are at $1.2 billion, 19 per-

cent ahead of 2011’s. “I really believe people are in a movie-going mode,” said Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal, which released “Safe House.” ‘’There have been great choices so far this year. I feel honestly that the mild weather has helped them enjoy wintertime for what it is. They’re not stuck inside, they’re not snowed in. Maybe people like to get out of the home rather than cocooning.” Timed to Valentine’s Day on Tuesday, “The Vow” stars McAdams as a woman who awakens in the hospital after a car wreck with no memory of her husband (Tatum) and the last five years of her life.

Women accounted for 72 percent of the audience for “The Vow,” whose receipts in just its first two days exceeded the movie’s $30 million production budget. “There are certain movies that women, no pun intended, vow they are going to see, and this is that kind of movie,” said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony, whose Screen Gems banner released “The Vow.” ‘’I do think a lot of men are going to be seeing it on Feb. 14. It’s a great date movie, and I think the men who do see it on Valentine’s Day are going to be thoroughly entertained.” “The Vow” added $9.7 million in 20 overseas markets to bring its worldwide total to $51.4 million.

Amy Winehouse’s parents accept Grammy Associated Press Writer LOS ANGELES — One of the Grammy show’s most poignant moments was one that TV viewers didn’t see. When Tony Bennett received the Grammy Sunday for best pop performance by a duo or group for his duet with Amy Winehouse, he invited the late singer’s parents to join him on stage during the awards ceremony’s pre-show segment. “We shouldn’t be here. Our darling daughter should be

here,” Winehouse’s father, Mitch, said after he and the singer’s mother, Janis, had embraced Bennett. His daughter was thrilled, Winehouse said, to have recorded the Grammywinning song “Body and Soul” with Bennett. Mitch Winehouse also noted Whitney Houston’s death Saturday and the recent passing of Etta James. “What can I say? There’s a beautiful girl band up in heaven,” he said.

Japan’s Fukushima reactor may be reheating: operator Agence France Presse

Temperature readings at one of the crippled Fukushima nuclear reactors have risen above Japan’s stringent new safety standard but there was no immediate danger, its operator said Sunday. Tokyo Electric Power said one of three thermometers on the numbertwo reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant indicated gradual heating this month and reached 82 degrees Celsius (179.6 degrees Fahrenheit) Sunday. The temperature was above the 80-degree safety standard newly employed by Japan’s nuclear safety authority, prompting the utility to publicise the reading and notify public agencies. But it remains below the 100 degree level that the government says is needed to maintain the safe state of “cold shutdown”.

The utility said it will check the accuracy of the thermometer in question, as two others on the same reactor have been measuring its temperature at around 35 degrees. Gas samples from the reactor did not indicate any new critical reaction, and other monitors and data do not suggest heating and increased steam, TEPCO said. “We believe the state of cold shutdown is being maintained,” TEPCO spokesman Junichi Matsumoto told a press conference. “Rather than the actual temperature rising, we believe there is high possibility that the thermometer

concerned is experiencing display error,” he said. As a precaution, TEPCO has increased the volume of water and boric acid solution being poured on the reactor to cool it down. The Fukushima power plant became the site of the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl after it lost its cooling systems in the March earthquake and tsunami and went through meltdown and explosions. Severe radiation contamination has rendered surrounding communities uninhabitable and triggered food and water scares in Japan.

Pakistani PM charged with contempt over graft case Associated Press Writer

ISLAMABAD — The Supreme Court charged Pakistan’s prime minister with contempt Monday for defying its order to reopen an old corruption case against the president, sharpening a political crisis that has shaken this already volatile country. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he could be imprisoned and will likely lose his job. But analysts said the premier seems willing to sacrifice himself for the benefit of his party and his political ally,

President Asif Ali Zardari. The case has distracted the government from dealing with a host of ills facing the nuclear-armed country, including a stuttering economy and a vicious Islamist insurgency. The political turmoil has also been a problem for the United States because it wants Pakistan to focus on repairing troubled bilateral relations and help negotiate peace with the Taliban in Afghanistan. Gilani drove himself and his lawyer to court, an apparent attempt to show humility to the judges. Security was tight, with helicopters

buzzing through the rainy, overcast sky and hundreds of police blocking roads leading to the court building in the capital, Islamabad. One of the judges, Nasirul Mulk, read out the contempt charge, saying Gilani had “willfully flouted, disregarded and disobeyed the directions of this court.” The prime minister, who was surrounded by his Cabinet members and coalition partners, said he understood the charge and would contest it. The move was the formal start to a process that will take months or weeks to conclude. The next session will be on Feb. 22.

JERUSALEM — Israel’s prime minister has accused Iran of being behind a pair of car bombings against Israeli diplomatic targets in India and Georgia. Benjamin Netanyahu told a meeting of lawmakers from his Likud Party on Monday that he believed the Iranians were responsible for the attacks in New Delhi and Tbilisi. Two people were wounded in India and the bomb in Georgia was discovered before it went off. Netanyahu said Israel has thwarted other attacks in recent months in Azerbaijan, Thailand and elsewhere. “In all those cases, the elements behind these attacks were Iran and its protege Hezbollah,” he said. Iran has accused Israel of involvement in a series of killings of officials and scientists involved in its controversial nuclear program. Assailants attacked Israeli diplomatic targets in India and Georgia in near-simultaneous strikes on Monday, wounding two people in a car bombing in New Delhi, officials said. Israel’s Foreign Ministry said an attempted car bombing in Georgia was thwarted when the device was discovered before it went off. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. But suspicion fell on Iran and its Lebanese proxy, Hezbollah, which both have deep grievances against the Jewish state. Hezbollah recently marked the anniversary of the 2008 assassination of one of its commanders, Imad Mughniyeh, in a bombing widely believed to have been carried out by Israel. And Iran suspects Israeli involvement in a series of killings of officials and scientists involved in its controversial nuclear program. The explosion in India tore through a diplomat’s car, Israeli officials said. The Foreign Ministry did not identify the wounded, but Indian officials said the driver and a diplomat’s wife were injured. The explosion took place in the late afternoon close to the embassy, said embassy spokesman David Goldfarb. Television footage showed a charred minivan with blue diplomatic plates, its rear door apparently blown out. Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor would not discuss who was injured nor the extent of the injuries because it was a security matter. “We are looking into the incident and cooperation with local security forces is excellent,” Palmor said from Israel. Authorities in the former Soviet republic of Georgia said an explosive device was planted on the car of a driver for the Israeli Embassy.

Cable excavation... From page 1 However, exception could only be applied if the employers were willing to establish a special underground utility lines network without digging. To establish such special utility lines, the costs would be fully charged to the employer with prior coordination with relevant agencies. Meanwhile, the Division Head of Highways and Bridges of the Badung Highways Construction, Maintenance and Irrigation Agency, IB Surya Suamba, said on Sunday (Feb 12) that his party had reminded the project owners, especially PLN, to make improvements. However, the former excavation could not be fully covered because PLN faced a technical problem. “The concerned party was unable to purchase hot mix product. Nevertheless, they promise to handle it tomorrow (Monday—Ed),” said Surya Suamba. Surya Suamba further said his party agreed to stop the destructive excavation permit. Even, his party strongly objected to the presence of road excavation that eventually destroyed the road infrastructure and sidewalks. To prevent similar repeated problems, the Badung Government had prepared a Regional Regulation Draft on Utilities, where one of which regulated the obligation to make permanent ducting on each utility installation. This draft was waiting for a discussion process. (kmb25)

the ancient Acropolis hill is seen in the background during clashes in Athens, early Monday, Feb. 13, 2012. Greek lawmakers on Monday approved harsh new austerity measures demanded by bailout creditors to save the debt-crippled nation from bankruptcy, after rioters in central Athens torched buildings, looted shops and clashed with riot police.

ATHENS — Greek lawmakers on Monday approved harsh new austerity measures demanded by bailout creditors to save the debt-crippled nation from bankruptcy, after riots in Athens and other cities left stores looted and burned and more than 120 people hurt. The historic vote paves the way for Greece’s European partners and the International Monetary Fund to release $170 billion (euro130 billion) in new rescue loans, without which Greece would default on its mountain of debt next month and likely leave the eurozone — a scenario that would further roil global markets. Lawmakers voted 199-74 in favor of the cutbacks, despite strong dissent among the two main coalition members. In response, the Socialists and conservatives expelled 22 and 21 lawmakers, respectively, reducing their majority in the 300-seat parliament from 236 to 193. Violence was also reported in six other cities, the worst in central Volos where the town hall and a tax office were damaged by fire, police said. Sunday’s clashes erupted after more than 100,000 protesters marched to the parliament to rally against the drastic cuts, which will ax one in five civil service jobs and slash the minimum wage by more than a fifth. At least 45 businesses were damaged by fire, including several historic

buildings, movie theaters, banks and a cafeteria, in the worst riot damage in Athens in years. Fifty police officers were injured and at least 70 protesters were hospitalized. Sixth-seven suspected rioters were arrested and a further 70 detained. Prime Minister Lucas Papademos urged calm. “Vandalism and destruction have no place in a democracy and will not be tolerated,” Papademos told Parliament just before the vote. “I call on the public to show calm. At these crucial times, we do not have the luxury of this type of protest. I think everyone is aware of how serious the situation is.” Since May 2010, Greece has survived on a $145 billion (euro110 billion) bailout from its European partners and the International Monetary Fund. When that proved insufficient, the new rescue package was approved. The deal, which has not yet been finalized, will be combined with a massive bond swap deal to write off half the country’s privately held debt. But for both deals to materialize, Greece had to persuade its deeply

skeptical creditors that it has the will to implement spending cuts and public sector reforms that will end years of fiscal profligacy and tame gaping budget deficits. As protests raged Sunday, demonstrators set bonfires in front of parliament and dozens of riot police formed lines to keep them from making a run on the building. Security forces fired dozens of tear gas volleys at rioters, who attacked them with firebombs and chunks of marble broken off the fronts of luxury hotels, banks and department stores. Clouds of tear gas drifted across the square, and many in the crowd wore gas masks or had their faces covered, while others carried Greek flags and banners. Masked rioters also attacked a police station with petrol bombs and stones. A three-story building was completely consumed by flames as firefighters struggled to douse the blaze. Streets were strewn with stones, smashed glass and burnt wreckage, while terrified passers-by sought refuge in hotel lounges and cafeterias. Scores of bat-wielding youths smashed property at will for several

hours, leaving broken traffic lights hanging from poles, and chairs and tables from looted coffee shops dumped on the street. Ambulances weaved through narrow backstreets to ferry the injured to hospital, dodging burning trash bins and the running battles between rioters and police. “I’ve had it! I can’t take it any more. There’s no point in living in this country any more,” said a distraught shop owner walking through his smashed and looted optician store. Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis said rioters tried to storm the City Hall building, but were repelled. “Once again, the city is being used as a lever to try to destabilize the country,” he said. In parliament, Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said the new austerity measures were vital to the country’s very economic survival. “The question is not whether some salaries and pensions will be curtailed, but whether we will be able to pay even these reduced wages and pensions,” he told lawmakers before the vote. “When you have to choose between bad and worse, you will pick what is bad to avoid what is worse.” The new cutbacks, which follow two years of harsh income losses and tax hikes amid a deep recession and record high unemployment have been demanded by Greece’s bailout creditors in return for a new batch of

vital rescue loans. Greece’s eurozone partners, meanwhile, kept up the pressure for real reform. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble was quoted as telling the Welt am Sonntag newspaper on Sunday that Greece “cannot be a bottomless pit.” Highlighting previous pledges he said weren’t kept, Schaeuble said “that is why Greece’s promises aren’t enough for us any more.” Asked whether Greece has a long-term future in the eurozone, Germany’s Vice Chancellor Philip Roesler said “that is now in the hands of the Greeks alone.” “It is not enough just to give financial aid — they must tackle the second cause of the crisis, the lack of economic competitiveness,” he told said ARD television. “For that, they need ... massive structural reforms. Otherwise Greece will not get out of the crisis.” Introducing the legislation Sunday, Socialist lawmaker Sofia Yiannaka said the intense pressure from Greece’s EU partners to pass the measures was the result of delays in implementing already agreed reforms. “The delays have our imprint. We should not blame foreigners for them,” she said. “We have finally found out that you have to pay back what you have borrowed.”

JAKARTA - Foreign Affairs Minister Marty M Natalegawa has again urged an end to the escalating violence against civilians in Syria. Indonesia also calls for a political process in Syria following the failure of the United Nations to issue a resolution on Syria, the foreign ministry said in a press statement here on Saturday. Marty expressed his view when meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu in New York on Friday, Feb 10. “Indonesia has so far emphasized the need to end the violence and to conduct a political process to respect the Syrian people`s aspirations,” the minister said, reiterating President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono`s recent statement on Syria. The Indonesian and Turkish foreign affairs ministers stressed the significance of the roles to be played by both nations, as democratic and Muslim-majority states, in responding to the developments in Syria. They also talked about the possibility of organizing an international conference on Syria. The most important things is that harm to civilian victims must be avoided, and a political process to find a peaceful solution must be promoted, the press statement said. Marty also expressed his views on Syria in a meeting with United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at UN Headquarters in New York on February 6, 2012. Meanwhile, a crowd of about 700 people staged a rally outside the Foreign Affairs Ministry here Friday to demand that Indonesia plays a prominent role in finding a solution to the conflict in Syria, as part of its active and independent policy. “Indonesia is a big country which in the past was able to set up the non-aligned movement and, therefore, it should not remain silent while the Syrian government is killing its own people,” Nova Abuzar, the rally`s coordinator, said. The demonstration was held after Friday prayers by four student and civil society organizations, including the Indonesian Muslim Students Action Front, the Campus Propagation Institute of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi, the Muslim Community Unity Association and the Islamic Youth Network.

Suspected Bali bomber on trial in Indonesia

Agence France-Presse

JAKARTA - A Muslim militant arrested in the same Pakistani town where US commandos later killed Osama bin Laden stood trial in Indonesia Monday on charges including murder for the 2002 Bali bombings. Umar Patek, 45, faces five other counts, including bomb-making and illegal firearms possession, and prosecutors say they will push for the death penalty. Amid a security lockdown, with anti-terrorism units deployed in Jakarta, Patek arrived at the court in an armoured police vehicle, giving a twothumbs up gesture with his handcuffed hands, but said nothing. The Indonesian is charged with premeditated murder and assembling bombs for the October 2002 Bali nightclub attacks, which killed 202 people including 88 Australians, and strikes on churches in Jakarta on Christmas Eve of 2000. “Defendant Umar Patek committed an evil conspiracy with others to commit a crime by bringing in, obtaining, providing or owning firearms, ammunition or explosive materials and other dangerous materials to carry out terrorism,” prosecutor Widodo Supriady said, reading part of the indictment to court. Wearing a white Muslim skull cap, white trousers, white shirt and an orange prison shirt, he smiled broadly to reporters before entering a holding cell inside the court building. The West Jakarta district courtroom was packed with about 100 spectators, more than half of them reporters, many of whom were working for Australian

media. Patek, facing a panel of five judges, was flanked by prosecutors and defence lawyers, who say attempts are being made to paint him as a Bali bombings mastermind. He sat in a white shirt, wearing glasses and quietly reading the indictment and after the session adjourned for next Monday, he shook hands with judges and prosecutors and smiled as he was escorted from the courtroom. The trial of Patek, believed to be a key member of the Al-Qaeda-linked Southeast Asian terror network Jemaah Islamiyah, is expected to last over four months as prosecutors present evidence from 86 witnesses. They will testify to Patek’s decadelong involvement in terror, prosecutor Bambang Suharyadi told AFP. Patek allegedly used simple household tools including a rice ladle to assemble bombs, which were housed in ordinary filing cabinets, according to Suharyadi and details contained in the indictment. “There are several foreigners who are prepared to give testimonies. But at this point, we worry about their safety so let’s wait and see how things go,” the prosecutor said. The indictment states that Patek was instructed by fellow Indonesian Imam Samudra to assemble the bombs for the Bali attacks. Samudra, convicted

of being one of the masterminds, was executed in 2008 by an Indonesian firing squad. Riduan Ismudin, also known as Hambali and widely regarded as the brains behind the attacks, was arrested in 2003 and is now held by US forces at Guantanamo Bay. But defence lawyer Asludin Hatjani told reporters Monday: “Prosecutors are trying to suggest that Patek was the mastermind of the Bali bombings, but he was not. He didn’t initiate the attack.” “The premeditated murder charge was also inappropriate. At the time of the bombing, the terrorism laws were not in place yet. To charge him with premeditated murder for alleged terror acts is not right,” he added. Patek, once the most-wanted terror suspect in Indonesia, who spent nearly a decade on the run, had a $1 million bounty on his head under the US rewards for justice programme. He was extradited to Indonesia after being arrested in January 2011 in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad, where US commandos killed Al-Qaeda chief bin Laden in May. Indonesian Defence Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said previously there was information that Patek had been trying to meet bin Laden in Abbottabad before his arrest, but this has not been confirmed.

Balinese Culture Kalibukbuk From a small village to a small town

Kalibukbuk, the centre of the Lovina Tourist Resort in North Bali is continuously developing from a small village into a small town. Squeezed between the capital of Singaraja Regency in the east, and the small town of Seririt in west, it is located on the main road that stretches along the north coast linking Singaraja to Gilimanuk on the western tip of Bali, the ferry port to Java. The development of tourism in Bali, initially in the south, gradually spread to the north when adventurous travelers, looking for something different, ventured beyond the chain of hills that divides Bali, north and south. In this chronicle of tourism development in North Bali, one prominent figure cannot be ignored, namely the late Anak Agung Panji Tisna, the last king of Buleleng. He was an intellectual who converted to Christianity, and a noted writer who wrote several novels, including “Sukreni Gadis Bali” which was later made into a film. He believed that in terms of tourism, Bali was unbalanced, too heavy in the south and too light on the north, an unbalanced boat that could capsize. With this vision, he built the first accommodation in the village of Kaliasem, west of Kalibukbuk in the 1970’s. Built on the beach with seafront views, it was bordered by a stream named “Tasik Madu” (Sea of Honey). He named it “Lovina”. It is not confirmed precisely how it got its name, but one story is that it

derived from “Lavina”, the name of a small hotel in India, where he spent the night on his way from Europe to Indonesia. The idea of developing the area was followed by his sons, the late Anak Agung Ngurah Ganteng who built “Manggala Home Stay” and Anak Agung Ngurah Sentanu, with “Permata Hotel” both located in the village of Kaliasem. As it happens in business when somebody proves successful, many people jump on the bandwagon, Lovina was not an exception. Accommodation started to appear with names to lure the would be tourists including “Seaside Cottages” even though the accommodation was not on the beach or “bungalow”, despite the building not being bungalows. This idea of attracting tourists goes further by naming accommodation and tourist facilities “Lovina”, despite the fact that the location is far from the original. Gradually “Lovina”, as the area began to be known as, was frequently visiting by tourists and travelers alike. The name Lovina had unofficially been stretched to the villages of Kalibukbuk, Anturan, Tukadmungga, Pemaron and Temukus, nobody knew where Lovina began and where it ended. Due to the flourishing unplanned tourism development, the Local Government started to realise that Lovina needed regulating. The area was issued a Regional Regulation adopting Lovina as an official Tour-

ist Designated Resort or “Kawasan Wisata”, one among several in Bali, and officially determining the borders covering five villages, namely Pemaron, Tukadmungga, Anturan, Kalibukbuk, Kaliasem, Temukus and Kayuputih. The resort was officially named “KawasanWisata Kalibukbuk” as the village of Kalibukbuk, roughly located in the centre, was the main area of development and “Lovina” was not an official name. The rapid tourism development of Kalibukbuk is not free of a negative side. Traffic jams, pollution, rubbish have increased, but Lovina is still peaceful and serene to visit. The calm sea, sunset and dolphins are the main tourist attractions. Those bold enough to venture out, can enjoy many tourist attractions beyond Lovina Resort such as hiking in the rice fields, the rustic environment and the simple atmosphere of villages. The main street of Kalibukbuk is now dotted with variety of restaurants, art shops and convenience stores. The small access path to Bina Ria Beach is jammed with bars, restaurants, souvenir shops and an imposing dolphin statue, the landmark of Lovina. Pasha Night Club is the only nightclub in town. Along the main road further to the east and west are several cafes, hang out places for those who enjoy the night until dawn. It is no exaggeration to say that the sleepy village of Kalibukbnuk has now been transformed into a booming small town. (IBP/Nyoman Suwela)

(kmb25)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Tests involving chickens have raised questions about the impact on health from engineered nano-particles, the ultra-fine grains commonly used in drugs and processed foods, scientists said.
