Inarritu, Ridley Scott earn Directors Guild nods

LOS ANGELES - Mexico’s Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Britain’s Ridley Scott on Tuesday topped the list of nominees for the Directors Guild of America (DGA) award -- a strong indicator of Oscar hopes. Inarritu was nominated for revenge thriller “The Revenant” and Scott for space hit “The Martian,” about an astronaut stranded on Mars -- two films seen as top contenders for Academy Awards glory on February 28. This marks the fourth nomination for both directors by the DGA. Inarritu won the award last year for dark comedy “Birdman,” for which he also won an Oscar. The 52-year-old Mexican filmmaker won the Golden Globe for best director on Sunday for “The Revenant,” about 19th century fur trapper Hugh Glass, who is played by another Oscar hopeful, Leonardo

DiCaprio. The film took three prizes overall including best motion picture drama and one for DiCaprio. Should Inarritu win the DGA award again this year, he would be the first director in the Guild’s history with back-to-back wins. “The Martian,” starring Matt Damon, won two awards at the Golden Globes on Sunday -- best comedy film and best actor in a comedy for Damon. The 78-year-old Scott has however never triumphed at the DGA awards or at the Oscars. Also nominated for a DGA award were Tom McCarthy for “Spotlight,” about Boston Globe reporters who

‘Fifty Shades of Grey,’ ‘Pixels’ among Razzies nominees

LOS ANGELES — “Fifty Shades of Grey” is all tied up with “Pixels,” ‘’Jupiter Ascending” and “Paul Blart Mall Cop 2” for the most nominations at this year’s Golden Raspberry Awards celebrating the worst in cinema. The films led the Razzies lineup Wednesday with six nods each, including worst picture and worst actor for Jamie Dornan in the sexy thriller “Fifty Shades of Grey,” Kevin James in the comedy sequel “Paul Blart Mall Cop 2,” Channing Tatum in the sci-fi film “Jupiter Ascending” and Adam Sandler in the video game mash-up “Pixels” and fantasy-comedy “The Cobbler.” The other worst picture nominee is the superhero flop “Fantastic Four,” which is also up for worst remake, screen combo, director for Josh Trank and screenplay for Simon Kinberg, Jeremy Slater and Trank. The announcement of the Razzies, which launched in 1980 as a spoof of Hollywood’s awards season, comes ahead of Thursday’s Oscar nominations. The “winners” for the 36th annual Razzies will be announced Feb. 27, the night before the 88th annual Academy Awards. They will be selected by 900 voting members from 47 states in the United States and 21 foreign countries. While far less star-studded than other award shows, past recipients such as Halle Berry and Sandra Bullock, have actually shown up in person to claim their gold spray-painted prizes. (ap)

Bowie finale soars on charts after death years in New York but enjoyed more mainstream success in his native Britain. Billboard magazine, which publishes the benchmark US chart, said sales of “Blackstar” were forecast to surpass those of Adele’s blockbuster “25,” which has spent seven weeks at number one. Bowie’s previous album “The Next Day,” which came out in 2013 after he was absent for a decade, rose as far as number two on the US chart. In Britain, the Official Charts Company said “Blackstar” was on course to top the weekly list and predicted that 13 more of Bowie’s albums would re-enter the top 100. Britain’s chart will come out late Friday, while the US list will be released over the weekend. “Blackstar” led Apple’s iTunes download chart for Monday, the day Bowie’s death was announced, in virtually every developed country, according to sites that track the data. Several other Bowie albums suddenly appeared or re-entered near the top of the

iTunes charts including “Nothing Has Changed,” his career-spanning hits collection released in 2014. On streaming leader Spotify, “Blackstar” songs as well as classic Bowie hits such as “Heroes,” “Under Pressure” with Queen, and “Let’s Dance” were rising on charts that look at the past week’s most-heard songs, with Bowie’s catalog ascending especially quickly in France. Bowie released “Blackstar” on Friday, his 69th birthday, enjoying widespread acclaim as the British music legend again proved his innovation with a hard jazz sound. Few people knew at the time that Bowie was dying of cancer and had released “Blackstar” as a final artistic statement, with wistful reflections from one of modern music’s most influential figures. Rough Trade, the taste-making British store that also runs New York’s largest record shop, said it would donate all proceeds from sales of Bowie’s work in January to cancer research. (afp)

British Stephen Russell Hakes covered with a mask is escorted by Indonesia Customs’ officer after a press conference at its local office in Bali, Indonesia, Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2016. Indonesian authorities arrested the British man on Jan. 9 on allegation of attempting to smuggle 3 grams of marijuana into the tourist island of Bali.

The British national, born in Watford, England, on December 26, 1958, was arrested shortly after landing at the Ngurah Rai International Airport on January 9 at 12 p.m. local time. He arrived from Dong Mueang, Thailand, aboard AirAsia flight FD-396 to Denpasar. Using technology capable of tracking passenger movement, the officers were suspicious of Hakes when the aircraft landed. The ground officers closely observed him at the arrival corridor, immigration checkpoint, and during inspection in the custom area. At first, the officers manually checked Hakes’ luggage and then continued the process using X-ray scanning equipment, but they did not find any suspicious items. The officers’ suspicions led them to conduct a body check on Hakes.

They eventually found a clear plastic bag containing some parts of brown plants. Double-checking through a narcotic test revealed the presence of marijuana or hashish weighing three grams. As a result of his action, Hakes is believed to have violated Article 113, paragraph (1) of Law No. 35 of 2009 on narcotics. If found guilty, Hakes would have to face a minimum five years to a maximum 15 years of jail term in addition to a fine of between Rp1 billion and Rp10 billion. Improving quality of human resources through youth organizations

IMPROVING the general quality of human resources starts with education, which provides both qualifications as well as resilience. Young people today, are dealing with worldwide competition and so they need to have both hard skills acquired through education in the sciences as well as soft skills such as critical and innovative thinking, that are acquired through involvement in organizations and which are necessary for the creation of our nations future leaders. Youth organizations in par-

ticular, not only provide fertile ground for new ideas, but can also serve as vehicles for young people to learn skills that benefit the organization itself, the broader community and the nation. “It is especially important for students to be involved in organizations, because it allows young people to come up with new ideas and thereby improve the quality of Bali’s future human resource sector. New ideas give rise to beneficial works that can serve as milestones in the development of the nation,” said I Ketut Agus Mahendra who was elected to become President of the Student Executive Board

of Udayana University (Unud) and who will be inaugurated into this position on January 15, 2016. The younger generation, he said, serve as agents for change for the nation. This student organization, which represents the aspirations of the youth, he explained, gathers people together to share and give birth to new ideas, to create events and to conduct activities that will improve the qualities of those entering the workforce. The practice of forming opinions on current affairs, coming up with creative solutions and discussing them with others, are all soft skills that are gained though

participation in student organizations and these skills can all be used to immediately benefit the larger community, explained Mahendra. He added that, young people need to think wisely about what organization they want to become a part of and what role they want to play within the organization. It is important to look at what the main purpose and goals of the organization are, to make sure that the organization has a positive impact on society -and the youth of Bali in particular.
